"Traditionally, the geologists of Canada have been occupied with the tasks of finding new mineral bodies, locating gas and oil fields or hunting for economic deposits of industrial minerals. A very minor percentage of graduate geologists have applied their skills to solution of the ""urban blight"" or employing their understanding of ""Nature"" for the optimum use of land by mankind. However, things are changing quickly. The role of the geologist in the planning process is being established. It is an exciting time! Geologists are now being consulted on a wide range of urban planning problems. These vary, tor example, from assessment of the geological environment for the new communities of Erin Mills and Meadowvale, which will have total populations in excess of 100,000 people (truly a satellite city), to a complete geological/ geohydrological assessment of the new sanitary landfill for the city of Guelph.Use of geologic techniques and methods for urban studies must be enhanced with certain skills not taught, in the past, to the geologist. These include airphoto interpretation, soil mechanics, geohydrology, municipal engineering and highway engineering to mention a few. The geologist has the unique training to assess the natural environment and to discover, warn and explain the implications of man's attempt to command his environment."

The relatively large amount of phosphorous occurring in many iron ores limits their usefulness aid sometimes renders them valueless under present conditions of nip-iron manufacture. A practical method for removing the phosphorus would be valuable to the iron and steel industry. Gravity concentration has been of little value as far as the removal of phosphorous is concerned, because the compounds of this element are, as a rule, disseminated very finely. Removal of the phosphorous by leaching is not a new idea and has been the subject of some investigation,3,4/ out for data :lave been published. W.R. Crane published analyse of various ore bodies in the Birmingham ham district. The hard or unleached ores a .re much higher in phosphorous than the Soft, leached ores along the outcrops. This fact indicates that as mild a leaching agent as water removes phosphorus effectively if enough time is allowed for it to react. As the forms in which phosphorous occurs in the iron ores are important in the consideration of any leaching operation, much time was expended in devising a method for determining them. According to Professor McVey, University of Alabama, the phosphorous-bearing minerals in the red iron ores of Alabama have not been positively identified by any microscopic methods.

State-of-the-art seismographs can be employed to assist the blasting engineer in understanding the propagation of vibration waves generated by blasting. Wave traces and frequency plots are used to adjust shot loading and timing, especially around close or near- field structures. Successful close-in blasting vibration monitoring requires careful consideration of the following: Geophone locations Mounting of geophone both on structures and in the ground Differences between ground motion and structural response This presentation will discuss methods used to control and monitor blast-induced ground and structure motions. Case histories are presented to illustrate seismic monitoring used as a tool to control vibrations and guide the blaster in the design process.

The method of ultrasonic-assisted leaching was used to extract vanadium from the stone coal, with alkali as leaching reagent. The effects of ultrasonic power, concentration of alkali, reaction temperature, liquid-solid ratio and reaction time were investigated, respectively. The optimal ultrasonic leaching condition for vanadium extraction is as follows: ultrasonic power 230W, concentration of alkali 5%, liquid-solid ratio 3:1, reaction temperature 90℃ and reaction time 1h. The leaching rate of vanadium reaches 76.4% under the optimal condition, which is 12.2% higher than that of non-ultrasonic leaching. The reason on enhancing the leaching rate of vanadium by ultrasonic leaching was discussed. It is indicated that the ultrasonic cavitation can increase the surface area of mineral, which is beneficial to facilitate the reaction rate. "Coniaurum Mines, Limited, hold nineteen claims in Tisdale township, in the Porcupine district, adjoining the McIntyre mine on the east. They extend for over a mile along the strike of the Hollinger-McIntyre 'break'. The property has been explored extensively along the ore zone both laterally and vertically. The creep response of the AE44 magnesium alloy was studied by means of constant load creep tests carried out at 125 and 150°C, obtaining that at the latter temperature the minimum creep rate observed under an applied stress of 100 MPa was two orders of magnitude lower in the investigated alloy than in AM50. The minimum creep rate dependence on applied stress was described by a conventional power-law, e = Aon , where A was a temperature dependent parameter and n was the stress exponent, resulting in a n value close to 30, i.e. by far larger than those observed in commercial alloys with similar Al content. This large difference in creep response was attributed to the precipitation of rare earths (RE) intermetallic phases distributed in the grain boundary zone in form of an almost continuous network of dispersoids that were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy.

There is no single factor that determines the appropriate capacity for a mining project. It is driven by the size of the resource, the capacity of the market, the availability of capital, the availability of power, the availability of water, and a myriad of other considerations. There is also no single solution to the question of how big the project should be. However, to develop a project, the study team needs to select the configuration options that it regards as the best for the project. To be able to make this selection, the study team should consider the range of available options and do so at a level of detail that gives it confidence in the conclusion but does not lead to multiple detailed design exercises. Having considered the range of options, and with a clear definition of the project owner’s objectives and constraints, the work to be carried into feasibility studies can be focused appropriately. This paper discusses the process of completing strategic mine planning to identify project configuration options to assist in the selection of the processing plant throughput rate (Capacity Study) for a large greenfield open pit mine. The processes described in this paper allow for the basis of design to be set for subsequent studies that meets the objectives at a risk profile acceptable to the owner.

A kinetic model for leaching of particulate metals in a batch system has been developed. The leaching mechanism has been analyzed by solving a series of ordinary differential equations relating heterogeneous reaction kinetics at the solid/liquid interface to mass transfer of reactant and products. Special emphasis has been given to the effect of changing of the surface area of the leaching substrate and initial particle distribution on the overall leaching rate. The dissolution of gold powders in acidic solution with bromine as an oxidant has been used as a model system. The effect of particle size, chemical reaction order, rate constant and mass transfer coefficient on the overall rate of dissolution of metal powder has been analyzed and discussed.

Measurement of the deformation of a borehole in rock subjected to a change in applied stress can be used to calculate the magnitude and direction of the applied stress, provided a satisfactory deformation-applied stress relationship exists , In this investigation by the Bureau of Mines the deformation of a bore- hole in a rock model subjected to a known applied stress was compared with the theoretical deformation of a hole in an elastic, isotropic plate and was found to be in good agreement. Hence, this relationship can be used to calculate the applied stress on a borehole from borehole deformation measurements.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) I. THE FRITZ ENGINEERING LABORATORY. TEE Fritz Engineering Laboratory was built under the direction of John Fritz, and presented by him to the University. A view of the building, looking east, is shown in Fig. 1. . The building was started in 1909, and completed in 1910, although all of the equipment was not placed until later. Mr. Fritz gave his personal attention to the details of construction and equipment, and it was his custom to drive over every day to the University from his home in Bethlehem, and spend some hours watching the work, offering suggestions, making changes, and planning new work. The result is a building and an equipment which embody his practical ideas. The laboratory structure is of the steel mill-building type, of light-colored brick, 91 by 114 ft., of which a section is shown in Fig. 2 and the floor-plan in Fig. 3. The steel frame carries the roof and traveling crane-way. Ample light has been provided by numerous windows in the side and end walls, in the clerestory, and by a skylight, 84 ft. long and 9 ft. wide, in the north roof. The main aisle of the building is 49 ft. 2 in. between centers of crane-columns, and has a clear height of 40 ft. The remainder of the width is taken up by two side aisles, 18 ft. high. The laboratory consists of four sections: (1) A general testing-section, containing the testing-machinery, a small machine shop, and an office; (2) a cement-testing room; (3) a room for making and storing concrete test-specimens; (4) a hydraulic section.

THE realization by metallurgists of the important effect that traces of impurity may have upon the properties of a metal, and their steady demand for purer and still purer metals, have made the special cools for 'trace' analysis of increasing value. In the United States at least, spectrographic analysis is becoming the standard method for determining the impurities in zinc die-casting alloys. The Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, as a producer of virtually pure zinc, uses the spectrograph to control the purity of its products, and-as the electrolytic method is employed here-to control both the impurities in the electrolyte and those 'trace' elements, which, while they do not contaminate the zinc, have a great effect on the plating efficiency. The general plan of the laboratory is shown in Figure l; the housing for air purification, which is on the roof, is indicated by broken lines. One of the chief factors affecting the layout was the easy way in which a spectrographic assay can be spoiled by contamination. To minimize the quantity of dust tracked in, the laboratory was made separate from the general research laboratories, and an office was placed between the two. This arrangement has its drawback because of the traffic through the office, but it has effectively cut down dust. For similar reasons, the available space was subdivided into a number of small rooms, and the air currents in the laboratory were so arranged that dust would be carried where it would do least harm. Air is drawn in at the roof over a 50-kilowatt bank of Calrod heaters, through Annis air filters, by a No. 4 Sirocco fan. Most of it is forced into the spectrograph room, but some goes to the office and darkroom. The air flow is from the spectrograph room, through the plate-measuring room, into the chemical laboratory, where it is exhausted by a No. 1% Sirocco fan on the fume hood. Air can also re-circulate from the plate-measuring room back to the heater. The arrangement is such that the air in the laboratory is maintained at higher pressure than the outside air; consequently, no dirt enters through cracks about the windows and doors. A thermo-regulator holds the temperature constant within one or two degrees; only on the hottest days in summer does the temperature rise enough to affect the focus of the instrument.

Leaching manganese-bearing materials with NaOH to remove caustic-soluble silica has been demonstrated as a method for upgrading manganese. Those materials containing opaline varieties of silica respond most readily. Spent leach liquors are regenerated by treatment with lime to precipitate calcium silicate and to reactivate the NaOH for leaching. ALL of our larger domestic deposits of manganese are very low grade, but estimated tonnages in these deposits are large enough to constitute a potential strategic reserve of manganese for emergency periods, provided these ores can be upgraded sufficiently to meet industrial specifications. Many types of processes have been suggested for upgrading these ores, several have been studied in pilot plants, and a few have attained limited commercial production for special purposes. The hydrometallurgical process to be described below proposes a leaching operation for removing caustic-soluble silica and other gangue minerals and consequently upgrading a manganese ore or flotation concentrate to a commercially acceptable moduct. It is known that some forms of silica and some silicate minerals are soluble in NaOH solutions under suitable conditions. This new process proposes to use NaOH for removing the soluble materials from manganese ores or concentrates and, as a result, upgrade the manganese content. Since spent leach liquors are not efficient leaching agents the liquor must be treated with lime to precipitate calcium silicate and reactivate the NaOH. Experimental Procedure Manganese-ore samples ground to —35 mesh were leached in iron containers into which the ore sample and appropriate NaOH solutions were placed. Flotation concentrates were already ground to —200 mesh. The slurries were then placed on a hot plate or into a pressure digester and stirred continuously during the period of digestion. Where the- digestion was performed at atmospheric pressures, water lost by evaporation was replaced at regular intervals to maintain approximately a constant volume of slurry. In the pressure digester, volume changes were not controlled. After digestion, the slurry was allowed to cool enough for easy handling, but it was filtered hot, 50" to 70°C, on a Buechner filter. Filtration under these conditions was satisfactory. The resulting filter cake was washed and dried. In most instances, a single leach would not produce maximum extraction of silica from the ore sample; consequently, the dried tailing was treated again in the same manner with a fresh solution of NaOH to obtain an additional extraction of silica. This procedure was repeated a number of times to get the maximum extraction of silica. Usually three or at most four stages of leaching were adequate for this purpose. This leaching procedure was used for obtaining the data reported in this paper on the effects of NaOH concentration, pulp dilution, temperature, and time of digestion on the efficiency of extraction of silica from the ore sample. The experimental procedure does not match industrial methods. consequently tests for counter-current leaching were set up. Data from these tests are not yet complete, but in a qualitative way they indicate that thickeners between stages of leaching will be satisfactory and that the quantity of silica in a leach liquor moving forward to a new solid has only a minor effect on the quantity of silica extracted from the new solid. A pilot plant is now being designed for operation in the near future to test and evaluate the merits of this process.

THE preparation and general properties of mag-nesium-lithium base alloys have been described in earlier papers.l,2 Lithium forms solid solutions with pure magnesium, lowers its density, and improves its formability. The improved isotropy and better formability of these alloys are attributed to the ability of lithium to convert the magnesium lattice from hexagonal (alpha phase) to body-centered-cubic (beta phase) structure. This change in structure is, however, accompanied by some limitations which make it difficult, if not impossible, to combine all the desirable properties in one composition. The most important of these limitations is the tendency of the high-strength alloys to overage and lose strength at temperatures of the order of 150" to 200°F. A study was made of the effects of composition and heat treatment on the age-hardening character- istics of the alloys. Stability of properties was determined by hardness and tensile testing of the alloys at room temperature after various periods of exposure to elevated temperatures. Precipitation-hardening curves are shown for a number of magnesium-lithium-zinc alloys in fig. 1. All the alloys were solution treated at 700°F and aged at 200°F. The reason for using the drastic quench, toluene at —105°F, was to reduce the rapid precipitation of the hardening phase which takes place at room temperature. Previous experience has shown that a hardness of about 90 to 95 Rockwell E is indicative of yield strengths in the range of 35,000 to 40,000 psi. This is a desirable strength level for magnesium-lithium base alloys with specific gravities of the order of 1.65 or less. Although the hardness level is raised by large zinc contents, a corresponding decrease in the cold formability of these alloys occurs with increasing zinc content. Thus, alloys containing up to about 10 pct Zn and having hardnesses of the order of 70 to 75 Rockwell E may be bent over a very small radius; however, the 16 pct Zn alloy requires a bend radius of more than 8T. The hardness relationships illustrated in fig. 1 can be explained by the partial phase diagram shown in fig. 2. The zinc-free magnesium-lithium alloys are entirely body-centered cubic (100 pct beta phase) when the lithium content of the binary is 10.3 pct or higher. When zinc is added, the boundary between the beta and alpha-plus-beta fields at 700°F is shifted to lower lithium contents. In addition, the solubility of zinc at 700°F decreases with decreasing lithium content. It is shown by a study of micro-structures that the limit of solid solubility of zinc in the 6Mg/Li* matrix at 700°F is about 19 pct. It is believed from a study of the aging curves that this limit is about 2 to 3 pct at 200°F. Zinc additions up to about 2 pct increase the hardness and strength of the magnesium-lithium base solid solution. Larger additions of zinc effect further hardness increases, but precipitate during prolonged aging at 200°F. Alloys having 14 to 20 pct Zn precipitation harden extremely rapidly during quenching, even when quenched in toluene at —105° F. The high-zinc alloys overage at 200°F but are capable of maintaining reasonably high hardnesses for periods up to 1000 hr.

Yttrium is a strategical material for its several usages in a wide range of industrial production. For this reason, improving the recovery of Yttrium has become a crucial focus for international research. In this scientific activity, the utilization of two extractants, 2-ethylhexyl-mono 2-ethylhexyl ester phosphonic acid (P-507) and sec-octylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-12), working in a synergistic extracting system, has been tested. A series of trials have been carried out to optimize the experimental conditions in order to separate yttrium from a mix of heavy rare earths in chloride media. Tests with different relative concentrations of extractants and a phase modifier (TPB, trybutyl phosphate), with different presaponification rate, have been performed to evaluate the behavior of the synergistic system. Results are very promising to recover and separate yttrium with a high purity.

IN 1922, the writer communicated to the Institute a paper entitled The Development of the Coal Industry in Canada (1), which summarized the considerations set out in a series of papers (2) concerned with coal-mining in Canada which he had presented in 1920 and 1921. This paper contained a forecast by decades, commencing 1920, of Canadian coal production, importation, consumption, and exports, based on anticipated rate of population increase, and continuation of the gradual increase in the per capita rate of coal consumption in Canada that had taken place every year up to 1920. Groundwater Monitoring is typically required by regulatory agencies at potentially hazardous landfills or surface impoundments. Agencies have often required an arbitrary number of wells with limited evaluation of the effectiveness of the network to detect a leak. A Monitoring Efficiency Model (MEMO) has been developed to improve the design and cost effectiveness of monitoring well networks. MEMO 15 an analytical model that simulates the migration of hypothetical contaminant plumes from a site and quantifies the efficiency of alternative well network designs in detecting the plumes. The computed monitoring efficiency provides a quantitative measure of the well network adequacy based on hydrogeologic considerations. The model was recently used to design the groundwater monitoring well network for a heap leach pad at the proposed Beartrack Project.

The mining methods described in this paper are those used in a large mine producing hard specular ore on the Marquette Range in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Although the conditions of mining are unique in this district, they are similar to those in many other districts, and information in regard to the methods used and the results obtained should be of interest. The methods now used are an outgrowth of those of former years which have been adapted to conform with improvements in mechanical appliances, changes in the wage scale and labor supply, and the' selling price of the product. The mine is situated' at Ishpeming, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, 16 miles west of Marquette, its shipping port on Lake Superior.

IT is appropriate to evaluate 1947 in review as a year of a peacetime record production of about 676,000,000 tons of coal (anthracite and bituminous), closely approaching the extraordinary wartime output in 1944. Considering the general price-wage inflation, it is in point to note that the coal industry sustained the highest wages paid to workers in any major industry, but that coal prices at wholesale levels have risen much less percentage wise than the average for all commodities. The sellers' market continues to prevail. In addition to serving our own country's enormous needs, our coal industry is exporting extraordinary tonnages overseas. This unusual export demand is likely to continue for a while. Moreover, the demand in Europe for American coal mining machinery is a real tribute to the management efficiency of our modern mechanized coal industry. Competitively, the petroleum industry is concerned over its long-term supply, and already a synthetic fuels industry is being publicly advocated. In due time coal and lignite are bound to be

The Blackwater Group comprises Dia Met Minerals Limited, Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson.Production at the NWT diamonds project began in October with the mine officially opened October 14, 1998. The project is situated on an 853 000 acre claim block located in the Lac de Gras region of the NWT. It is about 300 km northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km south of the Arctic Circle. The seasonal winter ice road to the Echo Bay Lupin mine passes along the eastern margin of the project area. This allows road access each year from mid-January to mid-April. For the remainder of the year, the project is accessible only by air.HistoryIn 1980, Charles Fipke traced indicator minerals east from the Mackenzie River area. He discovered indicator minerals in the Lac de Gras area and staked mineral claims in 1989. This initiated the largest staking rush in Canadian history. The joint venture launched an aggressive exploration program.Koala, Fox, and Leslie were identified in 1992 as potentially economic pipes.As soon as the project's potential was established, it was recognized that an enormous amount of work had to be completed in several areas before a mine could be developed, namely: technical evaluation of the resources; environmental and socio-economic evaluation to procure the necessary permits for the development; and engineering design to optimize mining and processing of the resource and to comply with specific environmental requirements."

The Arkansas Novaculite of Devonian and Mississippian age is the most distinctive formation in the central Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas from the standpoint of both topography and lithology. The formation typically forms precipitous, narrow ridges (hogbacks) which reflect the steepness of dip and the resistance and thickness of the rock units. The Arkansas Novaculite varies from less than 200 feet thick in the north to locally over 800 feet thick in the south and outcrops over an east-west distance of 360 km (200 miles) in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Most of the rocks of the formation are highly siliceous with novaculite predominating, and lesser quantities of chert, siliceous shale, conglomerate and rarely sandstone. Novaculite is commonly defined as a homogeneous mostly white rock, translucent on thin edges with a dull to waxy luster and composed almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The word novaculite comes from the Latin word novacula, meaning razor hone. This term was first used by Richard Kirwan in his mineralogy text of 1784. The origin of novaculite remains controversial but we believe it was a primary silica derived mostly from the alteration of submarine volcanic-rich materials, with numerous fine biogenic components and some minor clastics (derived mostly from foreland facies via turbidity currents) and deposited as an amorphous siliceous ooze in the deep Ouachita trough. It was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz during diagenesis by the compaction of the overlying rocks and the intense Late Paleozoic Ouachita Mountain tectonism. In the central and southern portions of the region three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division predominantly of light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive often calcareous novaculite. In the northern exposures the formation is thinner and contains more black chert and shale, chert-shale conglom¬erate, sandstone and less novaculite. The massive novaculite of the Upper and Lower Divisions is a source of high purity silica (99+%). Indians were the first to use novaculite. They made their various tools and hunting implements from the weathered broken rock until they learned the quarrying techniques. The first white men in the area recognized the use of novaculite for sharpening their tools and knives: previously whetstones were obtained in small quantities from Europe. To this day whetstone is quarried mostly in areas which the Indians and possibly the Spanish previously worked. Some of the current mining practices have changed very little from those of the early quarryman. In areas where the novaculite of the Upper Division is poorly cemented, this friable tripolitic material has found applications in such uses as an abrasive, as a filler or extender in paints, plastics and other purposes. Some of the dense novaculite is suitable as a filler in fire bricks and also in plastics. Because some of it has the tendency to decrepitate when heated not all novaculite can be used for these applications. Several quarry operators are crushing novaculite for road, concrete, and other aggregate. This use was formerly rather limited due to the abrasiveness of the novaculite on crushing and screening equipment. Further potential uses of novaculite are speculative but include application of high purity silica in the production of silicon metal for solar cells, seed or "growing", and fusing quartz for electronics.
