This bulletin traces the development of high-pressure, coal and tar hydrogenation technology, based on an intensive review of the pertinent literature. The bulletin was written as a part of the Bureau of Mines research program on synthetic liquid fuels. It covers the history and economics of the process; the chemical aspect of hydrogenation of coal, tar, and middle oil; the engineering aspect of converting coal and tar to liquid fuels, principally gasoline; and the equipment for the process. The literature covered includes documents of the United States and British Governments, journals, and other publications. Bureau results in the hydrogenation field are also incorporated.

The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA), also known as "Superfund", requires a listing of sites that have known releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants throughout the U.S. When EPA determines that a significant threat exists, it places the worst contaminated sites on the National Priorities List (NPL). CERCLA provides EPA broad authority to clean up hazardous sites that threaten human health and the environment. There are currently 52 sites on the NPL that were placed on the list because of high human health or environmental risk as a result of non-coal mineral extraction, beneficiation, or processing operations. This list covers mining sectors from aluminum to zinc. While some of these sites were abandoned, many are still operating. (There are additional mine sites that have been recently proposed to be included on the NPL that are not included in this paper.) EPA is continuing to develop a mining program to address human health and environmental threats from active non-coal mines. EPA has performed a comprehensive study to assess the waste management practices at all of the 52 mine sites on the NPL. In addition, EPA is continuing to collect information on the specific mining sectors (i.e., gold, copper) that represent many of the NPL mine sites. One of the goals of this effort is to attempt to identify the types of mining practices that lead to human health and environmental problems at the NPL mine site. EPA estimates that there are currently 500 to 1,000 active mines (not including placer operations). While some mining NPL sites began operations before the turn of the century, only a handful of the NPL mines entirely ceased operations prior to 1970. Of the 52 NPL sites studied by EPA, 12 are currently active. By definition, these mines represent current mining practices. Approximately 17 additional NPL mines that ceased operations between 1970 and 1990 represent some degree of current mining practices. Therefore, at best, less than half on the 52 NPL mine sites can be said to definitely represent past mining practices. Although some mining waste management practices have changed over time, the basic technology for extraction and beneficiation of mineral ores have remained fairly constant over the last fifty years. While the use of acid to leach copper dumps, the use of cyanide to leach gold in heaps, and the spread of solvent extraction techniques has changed some aspects of mining, the basic operation of removing ore from the ground and concentrating it through beneficiation has remained fundamentally the same as when most of the non-active

For every blast pattern, zones of unique material types need to be classified before mining. Most material types can be summarized into different kinds of ore and waste. Blocks generated from blasthole assays are too small to be selectively mined so areas with a single material classification meeting the mine’s selective mining unit must be defined. Current industry standard practices are to manually draw ore/waste dig limits but this process is subjective and results in quantities of dilution and ore loss which can be improved upon to enhance the profitability of mining operations. Two weeks production data from a homogeneous Cu porphyry and heterogeneous Manto-type Cu deposit are used to assess the variability in the hand-drawn dig limits for 20 geologists, mining engineers, or ore control specialists and are compared with the optimal ore/waste delineation. The profit for 20 distinct hand-drawn dig limits for the homogeneous mine ranged by 3.7% from $10.5 million to $10.9 million averaging at $10.8 million. The percent range nearly doubled for the more heterogeneous mine at 5.9% from $17.9 million to $19.0 million averaging at $18.6 million. Using the optimal ore waste delineation, the profit increased to $11.0 million (1.9% increase) and $19.3 million (7.0% increase) for the homogeneous and heterogeneous deposits respectively. The natural variability, diggability requirement, and selectivity are identified as the main drivers of ore loss and dilution. Recommendations are provided for reducing the subjectivity in manual hand-drawn dig limits by integrating dig limit optimization algorithms as a tool to assist practitioners.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912 THE U. S. Geological Survey, I believe, has almost completed a study of the Harney Peak quadrangle, preliminary to the publication of a report on that, district. As I was engaged for some months on an investigation of the mode of occurrence of the ore-bearing formation in this area, it has seemed to me timely to make public the results of my study, as a contribution to the consideration of this subject. It seems scarcely necessary to describe the locality and general geology of the Black hills of South Dakota, for since 1846 many have contributed information concerning this region, some of the reports bearing such well-known names as those of Walter P. Jenney, Henry Newton, S. F. Emmons, and C. R. Van Hise, while we have only to glance at Bulletin No. 4 of the South Dakota School of Mines, in which Prof. C. C. O'Harra, of that institution, has given us a bibliography of contributions to the geography and geology of the section, to find that other well-known men have studied the district, and have given us the benefit of their researches. The U. S. Geological Survey has made geological maps of nearly the whole of the Black hills, the only quadrangle yet to be completed being, as stated, the Harney Peak district. During the late summer and autnmn of 1910, it was my lot to examine and report. on a considerable area in this neighborhood, which once had been prospected, and in some cases exploited, for tin. This paper gives an account of certain geological phenomena, noted at that time, which greatly influenced my conclnsions. The predominating formation of the district is pre-Cambrian, represented by a highly-cleaved mica-schist, usually very garnetiferous, and sometimes hornblendic. The U.S. Bureau of Mines characterized Hg-containing wastes and used a thermal-desorption process to remove and recover the contained Hg. The wastes were generated by an electrical-parts plant engaged in the assembly of Hg-containing switches and contained phenolic resins and paper insulating materials mixed with soil. The average Hg content was 396 ppm. Numerous characterization tests showed the Hg was tightly absorbed and could not be removed or concentrated by leaching or gravity separation techniques. Laboratory retort tests showed the Hg content reduced to < 16 ppm in 2 h at 400 °C; rotary-kiln, thermal-desorption tests required 4 h at 450 °C. Airflow through the retort im¬proved thermal-desorption efficiency, but vacuum operation only slightly reduced the temperature needed for thermal desorption. Offgases from decomposition of organic materials were burned in a high-temperature afterburner and subsequently cooled in a heat exchanger to condense water vapor. Finally, the Hg vapor was condensed and absorbed from the offgas by activated charcoal. Mercury recovery was over 99.99 pct of the desorbed Hg. Thermal-desorption processes have had wide application to many Hg-containing wastes, and historical experience in Hg mining has demonstrated its potential cost effectiveness.

ABSTRACT Diesel-powered loaders are a pillar of modern underground metal mining. As these mines are getting deeper and hotter and the emission regulations stricter, ventilation costs are soaring, affecting production cost. Also, the cost of diesel fuel is expected to rise. These may make the use of diesel engines more problematic. Electric load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are an interesting alternative. This paper compares features and performance of diesel and electric, cable-powered LHDs. It overviews equipment offerings, and compares, analyzes and discusses technical parameters, operational problems and cost issues. The paper gives some conclusions about electric LHD applicability and performance, indicates possible applications, and suggests further research work.

The solidifzcation reactions in the Cu-Sn-As system were determined by microscopic examination, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The system presents no ternary compound. There is a quasi-binary section, of a simple eutectic type, between the compounds Cu5As2 and SnAs; the system presents, in addition, one ternary eutectic reaction, one ternary peritectic reaction, and seven transitional reactions. The temp-peratures corresponding to each of these reactions were determined, most of them with an accuracy of *lLC. The isothermal lines of the liquidus surface were also established for almost the entire diagram. NO reference was found in the literature relative to the Cu-Sn-As phase diagram and this is believed to be the first study on this subject. The Cu-Sn diagram was taken from Hansen and Anderko;&apos; it is represented by Fig. 1, with the phase designation which will be used in the remainder of this work. For the Cu-As diagram, the solution proposed by Hansen and ~nderko&apos; must be modified to take account of recent data, principally from Heyding and Despault~ and from Hume-Rothery and Burns; this yields the diagram represented by Fig. 2. As for the Sn-As diagram, it is not established with certainty, particularly so far as concerns the solid solubility of tin in arsenic and the solidification reactions near the compound SnsAsz. For this last point, Hansen and Anderko propose two solutions: congruent melting of Sn3Asz with a eutectic SnsAsZ + SnAs or incongruent melting implying a peri-tectic reaction L + SnAs = Sn3As2. Microscopic examination of the few binary alloys prepared in this composition range made us prefer the second of these solutions, which gives the diagram shown by Fig. 3. A system of partial differential equations describing miscible displacement of fluids in porous media is derived The system takes into account the influence of gravity, the spatial distribution of permeability, diffusion, and fluid viscosities and densities. A numerical procedure for approximating solutions to the differential systems has been tested for a horizontal two-dimensional geometry. In end-to-end displacements of oil with less-viscous solvents, the numerical solutions exhibited fingering qualitatively similar to that observed in laboratory models. Small random spatial variations in permeability about the mean value are sufficient to initiate fingering. Quantitative comparisons of computed results with laboratory data show good agreement. INTRODUCTION Miscible flooding of oil by solvent is receiving increasing consideration for field use.1-4 Unfortunately, such floods potentially present severe problems in loss of recovery through the by-passing of oil by expensive solvent. Consequently, their economic evaluation requires sound techniques for predicting recovery. The purposes of this work are to present a finite-difference method for calculating the multidimensional displacement of oil by solvent and to investigate the validity of the method by comparing results of calculations with data from displacements in laboratory models.5 The formulation of the method to simulate the model experiments treats a case of limited scope in the description of solvent flooding in the reservoir. The model experiments were carried out with fluids that were assumed to form an incompressible, ideal, two-component system with constant diffusivity. Establishing the validity of the method even in its present form provides a major step toward the goal of quantitatively evaluating individual solvent flooding projects. First, it demonstrates the fea- sibility of calculating the course of displacements which are dominated by an inherent macroscopic instability, i.e., viscous fingering. In addition, the method provides almost the only practical means of examining the effect of the size and extent of reservoir inhomogeneities on the development and propagation of the fingers, taking into account the important influences of diffusion and gravitational segregation. It might be inferred that such studies cannot yield results of practical value because in displacements dominated by macroscopic instability the pattern of finger development and the resulting performance should depend critically on small variations in the geometric distribution of reservoir inhomogeneities. The present method offers the capability inherent in computational techniques of predicting performance reproducibly with any arbitrary distribution of reservoir properties and, as such, provides a means of evaluating the sensitivity of behavior to uncertainties in reservoir definition and, thus, assessing the reliability of prediction of performance. THE PHYSICAL PROBLEM DATA USED FOR QUANTITATIVE TESTS OF CALCULATIONS In this work, a calculation for treating the miscible-displacement process is tested by comparing calculated results with experimental data. The experiments chosen for comparison have been described in detail,5 and the quantitative features are summarized in a later section. Briefly, oil was flooded by solvent of equal density from a thin rectangular channel in Lucite packed with uniform Ottawa sand. Under these conditions, two-dimensional geometry is considered adequate to represent the process. Inasmuch as the present work is concerned with testing of the method by comparison with specific two-dimensional data, the system of equations presented in the succeeding section will be oriented to defining the physical system specifically. "In 1988, two of the present authors Warner and Vahed [1] were amongst several co-authors on a seminal paper reviewing nickel pyrometallurgical operations of the era. Given that significant changes in the nickel industry have occurred since that time, including the overall political landscape, technology, the overall world energy picture, the countries sourcing nickel and finally the nickel market itself, the present authors considered it timely to provide a 2015 update. In 1988, total world nickel production from sulphide and laterite sources, including production in the former "Centrally Planned Economies"- was about 0.86 million tonnes/a, while in 2014 total world nickel production reached an all-time high of almost 2 million tonnes/a - some 230% higher. On the other hand, while in 1988, about 94% of world nickel was produced pyrometallurgically and of the order of 33% via laterites, today, about 88% of nickel is by pyrometallurgy, with some 41% from laterites, thus showing that more nickel is now sourced from laterites, a trend which is expected to continue.During the period under review, new processing technologies were developed and introduced, along with substantial improvements in both the technologies employed and the scale of operations. Significant productivity gains have been achieved in sulphide pyrometallurgy in part through more efficient mineral processing, particularly in pyrrhotite rejection, and the use of ever larger-scale process equipment. This made it possible to treat lower grade and more complex ores. The significant game-changer from a production perspective was the introduction in the early 2000s of nickel pig iron (NPI) in China via modified iron blast furnace smelting, an old technology long ago cast aside by other nickel producing countries. With the exception of the emergence of this new NPI capacity in China, in the laterite industry modernization and expansion of existing operations has been employed to gain productivity, to cut costs and/or offset the effect of declining ore grades. The NPI technology development has become a game changer in the traditional global supply and demand relationship, opening up a new frontier to supply nickel to low grade utility steel producers. One other key nickel development was the Indonesian ban on nickel ore exports effective in January 2014, thus effectively curtailing NPI production at existing Chinese plants, but on the other hand, potentially prompting new smelting facilities in Indonesia. This paper reviews and updates major pyrometallurgical sulphide and laterite operations worldwide, including changes in nickel extractive metallurgy. It also provides a brief review of new developments in pyrometallurgical operations, with special focus on the NPI process and presents an outlook of the potential future direction of the industry."

The oxo reaction consists of catalytic conversion of olefins by reacting the olefins with CO and H2 (water gas) to aldehydes that contain one more carbon atom than the starting olefin. The aldehydes are then generally reduced with hydrogen to primary alcohols in a second stage. The two-stage process is called the oxo process. The word "oxo" is derived from the German "oxierung" (ketonization); thus the exact English equivalent of "oxo" is "keto". The oxo process may be applied to nearly all olefins. A wide range of pressures and temperatures may be used in both stages. The pressure range usually employed is 150 to 200 atmosheres. The temperature in the first stage is usually about 140° C. and in the second or hydrogenation stage about 180° C. Although a standard Fischer-Tropsch catalyst may be used for both steps, cheaper catalysts have been utilized to effect hydrogenation of the aldehydes. Most of the information for this, report on the oxo process was gathered from Technical Oil Mission microfilms. T.O.M. Reels 14, 55, and 134 were especially valuable. T.O.M. Report 6 by H. M. Weir was very helpful. Information on the oxo process is scattered throughout documents captured in enemy territory, and the present report does not include all the available data. Some of the information was procured by personal interview. Where, in the body of this report, certain investigators are quoted, the source of the statement is either personal interview or the T.O.M. reports.

As has been the case since the early Phoenician traders, the minerals used by modern man come from deposits scattered around the globe. The price received is more and more being set by worldwide supply and demand. Thus the price component in the profit equation:Profits = Material sold (units)x(Price/unit û Cost/unit) is largely determined by others. The recent price history for two of the major metals, copper and iron, are given in Figures 1 and 2, respectively. As can be seen there has been a steady decline in the prices (when expressed in constant dollars) over the 20 years which have lapsed since the first of the International Conferences on Mass Mining, æDesign and Operation of Caving and Sublevel Stoping MinesÆ was held. If one would look back over the entire 20th century this would also be the trend. Cost containment/reduction through efficient, safe and environmentally responsive mining practices is serious business today and will be even more important in the future with increasing mining depths and more stringent regulations. A failure to keep up is expressed very simply as: Profit This, needless to say, is unfavourable for all concerned (the employees, the company, and the country or nation). The mining companies have had to look at ways of reducing the expense part of the profit equation while maintaining safe, environmentally conscious operations. Table 1 summarises the rules for working in todayÆs economy.

Currently, deep foundation designs for the service limit state are deterministic in nature. The settlements and lateral deflections of deep foundations are calculated by means of numerical techniques whereby the foundation-soil interactions are characterized by discrete load transfer curves such as t-z or p-y curves. The noted deficiency of the deterministic approach is that the uncertainties arising from various sources, such as soil properties and model errors are not considered. To address this deficiency, a performance-based reliability design methodology is developed using Monte Carlo statistical methods. The performance based design criteria are defined in terms of the specified allowable displacement. The input to the numerical solution techniques, including the soil strength parameters, unit weight of the soil are relevant to the generation of the load transfer curves are treated as random field. The well established random field generator algorithm, local averaging subdivision, is used to generate random samples of input, where the mean values, variances, the probability distribution, and correlation structures are required statistical parameters for these random variables. The objective of the performance based reliability design is to determine the optimized foundation dimensions so that the probability of failure is less than the target probability of failure. The probability of failure by the Monte Carlo approach is simply the ratio of the number of unsatisfactory performance to the sample size. A numerical example for laterally loaded drilled shaft is given to illustrate the application of the methodology. The incorporation of the correlation length is shown to be critical for properly accounting for the site soil spatial variability.

One aspect of a program to improve the chances of survival following coal mine disasters is the development of a communications sys tem which will allow surviving miners to make their circumstances known to rescue teams. At present, it appears that an electromagnetic system may be most practical. The development and design of an effective electromagnetic communications link for signalling between mine workings and the surface requires knowledge of pertinent physical properties of the rocks overlying the mine workings and the characteristics of the ambient noise against which a communications signal must be recognized. Knowledge of the overburden electrical transmission properties is useful not only for determining a practical operating transmitter frequency at a given mine, but also for ensuring the best possible electromagnetic coupling for routine or emergency communication purposes. Field studies of the electrical transmission properties of the overburden of coal mines in Colorado, Illinois, and Pennsylvania generally show that a relatively uniform and unimodal electrical conductivity distribution exists provided that the region has not been subject to considerable structural or metamorphic deformation such as that observed in the Gary District of West Virginia. Measurement s of ambient surf ace electromagnetic noise levels at several mines in Colorado, Illinois, and West Virginia were taken and analyzed and are presented in the form of amplitude histogram plots both as a function of frequency and time of day. These amplitude histograms may be used in conjunction with overburden resistivity data in implementing an uplink communications beacon system which will yield a specified signal- to-noise ratio at the surf ace. Numerous C .W. field transmission tests were made in various coal mining environments with use made of either a buried vertical-axis transmitting loop or a short insulated grounded current line. These transmission tests were made from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz in frequency and at several geographic surface receiving sites. The results of these field measurements show, in general, good agreement with theoretically calculated results. Since the produced surf ace magnetic field from a buried vertical-axis loop source or the produced surface horizontal electric field from a buried horizontal current line show better agreement with theoretical results, they could be used for beacon location system. One criterion would be in detecting the equatorial and polar null lines of the horizontal electric field component which is normal to the direction of emplacement of a buried transmitting line current source. A second criterion would be in the surface mapping of the maximum in the vertical magnetic field directly over a vertical-axis loop transmitter and the associated null is the vertical magnetic field at a horizontal offset distance which is about 1.4 times the depth of burial of the transmitter. Finally, a third criterion would lie in the surface mapping of the null in the horizontal magnetic field directly over the vertical-axis beacon and the associated maximum in the horizontal magnetic field at an offset distance from the transmitter axis of half the depth of burial of the loop transmitter. In mapping the vertical magnetic field over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter, the size effect of the transmitter loop must be taken Into account when the separation distances between the transmitter and receiving sensor are less than ten times the effective radius of the source loop; increasing the size of the transmitting source relative to the source-receiver separation distance shifts the null in the vertical magnetic field to greater offsets. In mapping either the vertical or horizontal magnetic field over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter, care should be exercised in ascertaining that measured nulls and maxima are along radials through the axis of the buried source loop. For the main part, coupling experiments show that ambient electromagnetic noise in coal mining districts is less of a problem above 1000 Hertz. But secondary and perhaps undesirable maxima and null phenomena (as well as penetration problems) would occur in many coal mine provinces in the behavior of the surface horizontal magnetic field (over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter) if transmission frequencies as high as 10 kHertz were used.

"The paper describes the CDN$400 million expansion at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited’s operations. The company has continuously produced copper and zinc at the Flin Flon metallurgical plant since 1930. The paper details the company’s operational turnaround since 1995 and “The 777 Project” which includes two new mines, expansion and modification of the concentrators, expansion of the zinc pressure leach plant, a new zinc electrolytic cellhouse and modifications to the copper smelter gas handling system to reduce ground level gas emissions. IntroductionHudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited (HBMS) was incorporated in 1927 to mine and process the world-class Flin Flon copper and zinc orebody. Ore concentration and metallurgical facilities were constructed in Flin Flon. The metallurgical complex capability is currently 89 000 tonnes of copper metal and 98 000 tonnes of zinc metal from both HBMS and purchased concentrates.Flin Flon, with a population of 7000, is in Manitoba and partly in the province of Saskatchewan. The location is isolated with Winnipeg 800 km to the south and Saskatoon 500 km southwest.Today, three underground mines feed the Flin Flon concentrator, one feeds the Ruttan concentrator at Leaf Rapids, 200 km to the north of Flin Flon, and Chisel North mine feeds the Snow Lake concentrator (Fig. 1).The Flin Flon volcanic massive sulphide proximal and distal orebodies are within the Flin Flon greenstone belt which stretches from the west of Flin Flon to the east of Snow Lake, a distance of 250 km. The belt is approximately 100 km wide before disappearing below the paleozoic cover to the south."

This paper presents the details of milling practice and costs at the conglomerate mill of the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., Lake Linden, Mich., and is one of a series on milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The mines of the Calumet & Hecla. Consolidated Copper Co. are located in the Keweenaw Peninsula of northern Michigan. The mines of this district lie in a belt not over 4 miles wide and 100 miles long, which contains more or lees commercial ore. The Calumet & Hecla properties are the farthest north, except for the Seneca, of the operating mines. The district borders on Lake Superior, and by means of the Portage and Torch Lake waterways the largest lane vessels, can transport coal and other supplies from the lower Lakes directly to the company docks.

The Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement (MMSR) is a major urban infrastructure project involving approximately 2.3 km of tunnelling and construction works. The works extend from Docklands Precinct, on the southwest edge of the city, southwards to connect with the Hobsons Bay Main Sewer in Port Melbourne. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnelled section of the works terminates at the Yarra River where the delta geology and alignment requirements precluded the use of underground tunnelling methods. The 132 m long river crossing works involve a cut-and-cover excavation within a staged fl ooded cofferdam construction to construct an immersed tube tunnel as an extension of the TBM works.This paper reports on the development of the staged construction method and highlights the geotechnical and structural design aspects involved in building a new sewer in the Yarra River to close the gap between the new TBM driven and pipe-jacked tunnels.

There are a great number of asbestos deposits in the USSR, and some are quite large. The main deposits of chrysotile asbestos are shown in Fig. 1. The Bazhenovo deposit, which is located in the Sverdlovsk region, is the largest and has been mined since 1889. Systematic studies of asbestos deposits were begun from the very be- ginning of Soviet government and are most often connected with the names K.E. Tarasov, P.M. Tatarinov, B.J. Merenkov, N.D. Sobolev, F.V. Syromjatnikov, V.N. Lodochnikov, V.P. Petrov, V.P. Eremeev, L.A. Sokolova, V.R. Artemov, and V.F. Dybkov. Investigations by these people and others helped the USSR be one of the most important producers of asbestos in the world. In this chapter, the main asbestos deposits of the USSR are explained in a general outline from the point of view of their genesis, common features, and differences that must be taken into account for forecasting, exploration, and the mining of asbestos. All chrysotile asbestos deposits of the USSR were formed from magnesium rock as a result of comparatively low grade temperature, hydrothermal alteration, and free crystallization of fibrous chrysotile in open cavities that served as catalysts. Chrysotile, a widely distributed rock-forming mineral, is not in general an important mineral for industry as it is a long fibrous and main vein variety. However, it must serve for geologists as an important prospecting criteria. And, the geologist should search for the mineral not only in places of possible chrysotile generation, but in places where asbestos may be crystallized in its long fibers. The Soviet geologists distinguish chrysotile asbestos deposits in two groups: (1) ultrabasic rocks and (2) sedimentary dolomite terranes, taking into account how the maternal rock was affected by hydrothermal solutions. The largest deposits are related to ultrabasite. In dolomite, the largest deposits are small and their asbestos contains almost no iron, which makes it a better filler for insulating plastics. There are a few types of asbestos deposits within the limits of the ultrabasic group, the largest being a Bazhenovo type to which the deposits of the Urals are attributed. This Bazhenovo asbestos is characterized by the most complete zonality of disposition for various kinds of asbestization. These types of deposits are, for the most part, the only ones presently working in the USSR. The Bazhenovo deposit is connected to the gabbro-peridotite intrusive belt that is about 180 km long and is broken into a number of fault blocks as shown in Fig. 2. Granitoid veins of intruded rocks are found along the deepest faults, and were sources of hydrothermal solutions that affected the maternal rock. The nearest granitoid vein, ultrabasite, is substituted by listwanite that consists of quartz, talc, carbonate, and some other essentially talcous rock. The next zone of hydrothermal alteration is composed of serpentine. The boundry between serpentinite and unaltered ultrabasite is as irregular, diffuse, and rough as the boundaries between all other zones. Nearer the vein of granitic rock, ultrabasite is entirely serpentinized into massif serpentinization that penetrates through cracks and fissures. There is an unaltered ultrabasite space between fissures, and the biggest block is preserved unaltered in the central part of the massif. The Soviet geologists call this ultrabasic sopka. Preservation of the unchanged blocks is of great importance for deposit formation as volume changes are impossible during the process of asbestization and serpentinization. It may be confidently said that asbestization in Bazhenovo type deposits is possible only when alteration of ultrabasite has not completely occurred. Knoop hardness in the rolling plane and in the longitudinal plane of hot-rolled and cold-rolled sheets of sublimed magnesiu?w was measured as a function of the angle between the long axis of the indenter and the rolling direction. These measurements were correlated with similar data taken on the (0001) and (1010) planes of a single crystal of magnesium where the hardness was measured as a function of the angle between the long axis of the indenter and the [1120] direction. The results were analyzed for compliance with the hypothesis of Daniels and Dunm to account for slip, and with a similar hypothesis to account for twinning. Some hardness anisotropy data are also presented for magnesium-indium and magnesium-lithium solid solution alloys. It is well known that the hardness of a crystalline specimen is different for its different surfaces, and also that the hardness is a function of direction within a single surface. Variations in hardness for single crystals have been found to be much larger than those for polycrystalline materials. Also, materials having low crystal symmetry were found to have a greater anisotropy of hardness than those of high symmetry. 0&apos;Neill1 and Pfeil,2 using a 1-mm Brine11 ball, studied single crystals of aluminum and iron, respectively; and they found a variation of hardness of about 10 pct between readings taken along the principal crystallographic faces. Daniels and Dunn3 found that the Knoop hardness number varied about 25 pct as the long axis of the indenter rotated on the basal plane of a zinc single crystal. The variation on the (1450) plane was about 100 pct, and the average hardness on this plane was about twice that of the basal plane. They also studied the variation of hardness within the (loo), (110), and (111) faces of a single crystal of silicon ferrite and found variations of about 25 pct although the average values for these planes were almost identical. Single crystals of zinc were also studied by Meincke.4 He found that the Vickers hardness numbers varied about 30 pct depending on whether the axis of the indenter was parallel or perpendicular to the (1010) and (1110) planes. Mott and Ford,5 using a Knoop indenter, found a 25 pct variation in hardness on the basal plane of zinc. Crow and Hinsley6 studied heavily cold-rolled bronze, steel, brass, copper, and other metals. They found that the difference in hardness numbers based on the difference in the length of the diagonals of the Vickers indenter was from 5 to 12 pct. Some minerals and synthetic stones show a very large anisotropy of hardness. Robertson and Van Meter7 found the Vickers hardness of arsenopyrite to vary from 633 to 1148 kg per mm2. stern8 using the double-cone method on synthetic corundum found the hardness number to vary from 950 to 2070. And winchell9 reported a variation of hardness number from 184 to 1205 in kyanite. The variation of hardness as a function of direction in a given crystallographic plane in single crystals possesses a periodicity which is related to the symmetry of the lattice. Daniels and Dunn3 found a six-fold periodicity of hardness in the (0001) plane of zinc. They found that the hardness curves of silicon ferrite had a four-fold symmetry in the (100) plane, a two-fold symmetry in the (110) plane, and a six-fold symmetry in the (111) plane. Mott and Ford5 also reported a six-fold symmetry of hardness in the basal plane of zinc. And vacher10 found two-, four-, and six-fold periodicities of hardness in copper on the (110), (100), and (111) planes, respectively. The purpose of this paper is to report the results of an investigation on the anisotropy of hardness as a function of orientation in single crystals of mannes-ium, and samples of rolled magnesium, magnesium-indium, and magnesium-lithium solid solution alloys. The anisotropy of hardness of pure magnesium which had been hot rolled, and then cold rolled various amounts to fracture, was studied by means of Knoop indentation hardness numbers; and the results were correlated with the preferred orientation as determined by quantitative X-ray pole-figure data. A comparison was made of the hardness data obtained from the rolled sheets and those of single crystals of magnesium. Transportation networks extend every day around the world, requiring safe and well-maintained structures for efficiency and for users’ safety. Due to specific features of the infrastructure, such as longer tunnels, increased traffic and marginal safety rules, fire safety in rail and road tunnels becomes more challenging.The situation becomes more critical due to the global economy and increasing worldwide tourism, with multi-national companies often involved in both design and construction of transportation routes or systems in other countries. Tourism brings the risk of visitors becoming victims in a foreign land; thus, international law becomes more and more applicable to transportation projects all over the world, requiring a consistent approach to safety (UN Economic and Social Council, 2001; US DOT Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) 2006; US Transportation Research Board, Committee on the Role of Public Transportation in Emergency Evacuation, 2008; UK Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, 1997).There are significant differences between rail and road tunnels, both in their functionality and safety requirements. Most tunnels over a certain length are equipped with emergency ventilation systems capable to control the spread of smoke by creating an air stream in the desired direction. Besides ventilation, fire-life safety (FLS) includes smoke and heat detection by linear or spot detectors, closed-circuit television (CCTV) and public address systems with prerecorded announcements, as well as evacuation signage and monitoring capabilities (Vägverket – Swedish National Road Administration, 2004).There isn’t a consistent, worldwide approach to the design of emergency ventilation systems for tunnels, with significant differences from continent to continent (US DOT Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), 2004, US Federal Transit Administration, Transportation Research Board, 2006). In North America US NFPA 130 and 502 standards for rail and road tunnels, respectively, represent the main criteria, however, they are continually revised and new versions issued every three years. For road tunnels the World Road Association PIARC issues guidelines, but they are not truly enforceable. There are no similar international guidelines for rail tunnels, except general recommendations by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) (IAPT, 2003).In Europe the Directive #54/EC adopted by European Community Parliament in 2004 requires a minimum level of safety for road tunnels users in all existing and proposed tunnels in the Trans-European road network that are greater than 500 m in length. Authorities having jurisdiction in many other individual countries, such as Australia, Austria, Germany, Japan and others, enforce specific safety regulations (Miclea et al, 2007). While it is impossible to summarise all aspects of this topic in a short paper, a review of the design approach, the existing differences in safety requirements, as well as applicable design solutions to meet safety codes for both rail and road tunnels are discussed below.
