The strength of anchorage of various types of roof bolts in permafrost depends on the types of rock in which they are installed. Variation in the mine thermal regime results in weakening of the roof and walls, and at times total loss of ice cement bonds takes place in the surrounding rockmass. In mines with positive ventilation air temperature, the wedge or expansion types of bolts may become weakened due to the transfer of heat into the anchorage through the metal rod and subsequent thawing of rocks. Effective operation and evaluation of roof bolt systems for mine workings in permafrost require predictions of the dynamics of wall thawing by warm ventilation air. This report details work performed and results obtained in a study of the water management aspects of oil shale mining and retorting in the Piceance Creek Basin. Three specific sites were investigated, and optimal water management systems for both conventional and in-situ extraction processes were generated. Water-related legal and environmental constraints on development were identified and the water management schemes were developed in compliance with these regulations. Limitations on shale oil production implied by limited water supplies were evaluated. Potential Basin-wide effects of development were evaluated using a computer model, and mitigation strategies were developed. Recommendations for additional investigation and analyses were presented.

Techniques previously published to predict the production performance of a water flood when the mobility ratio is not unity have been primarily restricted to a five-spot well pattern. When other types of well patterns are considered, the prediction of performance has required either a model study or a complex numerical solution of a multiple-fluid system with a high-speed digital computer. Simple methods are developed in this report for predicting the areal sweep efficiency and injectivity history of a water flood for arbitrary well patterns and mobility ratios. The effect of an initial gas saturation can be incorporated into this method of prediction. With the layer superposition concepts published by Prats, et al.,1 these methods can be used to predict the production performance of a water flood in a reservoir having a wide range in permeability. A reasonably good agreement is shown by comparisons of the results calculated by this method with those obtained either by model studies or by complex numerical solution of multiple-fluid systems. Therefore, it has been concluded that a reasonably accurate method has been developed for predicting the production performance of a water flood employing an arbitrary type of well pattern for any given mobility ratio. A medium-speed digital computer can be used in applying this method. INTRODUCTION Production performance of multi-fluid five-spot water floods can be predicted by the techniques published by Prats, et al.1 This technique takes into account the effects of initial gas saturation, mobility ratio and vertical variations in horizontal permeability. A basic assumption in applying this technique is that unit displacement efficiency does not vary with time after the passage of the flood front. Prats, et al. demonstrated that this assumption is valid for normal waterflood applications with small mobility ratios. To extend Prats' technique to other types of well patterns has required either an experimental model study or a numerical solution of a multiple-fluid system to describe the performance of an individual homogeneous layer. Sheldon and Dougherty2 presented an exact numerical solution employing any arbitrary well pattern. This technique is complex to apply, requiring (1) numerical solution of the single-fluid system, (2) conformal mapping of the streamlines and iso-potential lines to form a new grid network, and (3) a numerical solution of the multi-fluid system on the new grid network. A method was developed in this paper to approximate areal sweep efficiency and injectivity as functions of time for an individual homogeneous layer for arbitrary well patterns and mobility ratios. Analytic expressions were derived to directly apply this method to five-spot and direct line drive well patterns. For other types of well patterns, this method is similar to the approach of Higgids and Leighton,6 in that it utilizes the stream tubes and iso-potential lines obtained by the solution of differential equations when the mobility ratio is unity. However, this method is easier to apply than the Higgins-Leighton method since it does not require knowledge of the variation between oil and water relative permeabilities and saturation. Using the relationship between areal sweep efficiency, injectivity and the volume of water injected into an individual homogeneous layer as obtained by the method presented in this paper, and Prats' technique for the superposition of individual layers, one can predict the production performance of any water flood. ASSUMPTIONS GENERAL Basic assumptions made in this report are that fluids are incompressible and the layers are horizontal, homogeneous and uniformly thick. It is assumed that as water is injected into the layer, three distinct regions are formed —a water bank, an oil bank, and an unflooded region. Each region is assumed to displace other regions in a pis-tonlike manner, with only one fluid flowing in each region, so that there is no change in unit displacement efficiency with time after the flood front has passed in the reservoir. Therefore, the residual oil saturation in the water bank and the oil saturations in the unflooded region are constant throughout the layer. The Bureau of Mines Morgantown Petroleum Research Laboratory, with the cooperation of the Penn York Oil Company, cored the Dewdrop, Bradford Third, Lewis Run, and Sartwell sands in the Sartwell oilfield, McKean County, Pa. This report contains a review of the geology and depositional history of the field and an evaluation of the feasibility of secondary recovery of oil from the Bradford Third and Sartwell sands by waterflood or gas drive. Core analysis, geologic data, and electrical and radioactivity logs were used to evaluate the reservoir characteristics. Reservoir geometry, rock properties, fluid characteristics and saturations, and relative permeability-saturation relationships were used to assess the floodability of these two sands. The results of this study indicate that between 53,000 and 61,000 barrels of oil can be recovered by water or gas injection. The success of a waterflood or gas drive will depend on the field injection rates of the reservoirs comprising this oilfield. Following an economic evaluation, additional field work is recommended to further test the floodability of the reservoir.

"It has been discovered that copper concentrates can be leached in strong (40-60%) sulfuric acid with nitric acid, or with oxygen if nitric acid is present as a catalyst. Chalcopyrite is rapidly decomposed at temperatures well below the boiling temperature of the lixiviant (-150 C.) and the resulting copper and ferric salts are precipitated as CuS04.H20 and FeH(S04)z.4H20. Other metal sulfides such as zinc, lead, nickel, etc. are also converted to sulfates that are nearly insoluble. Sulfur is partially converted to elemental and partially to sulfuric acid. Reduction products of nitric acid can be recovered from the distillate with good recovery. Conversion of as-received copper concentrates is largely complete in about 1 hour. Introduction9 molar sulfuric acid is an unusual hydrometallurgical lixiviant: it has a boiling point of about 150 C. and a low solubility for base metal sulfates. Below about 6 molar acid, the boiling point falls below 120 C. and yields much higher sulfate salt solubility, while above 12 or 13 molar acid and at higher temperature sulfuric acid becomes an oxidizing agent, yielding gaseous S02' Thus, sulfuric acid within this range of concentration is capable of acting well above the temperature of boiling water without requiring autoclave conditions, and if typical oxidative leaching conditions are applied to suspended mineral sulfide concentrates, it is possible to obtain a conversion of these sulfides into 'crystalline sulfates. Thereafter, the sulfates can be separated by filtration or by solid - bowl centrifuge and the solution can be recirculated to the reactor vessel. Meanwhile, the solid sulfates can be treated in a typical hydrometallurgical circuit, i.e., dissolved in a return stream that is essentially water, separated from each other by, for example, solvent extraction, and recovered as metals by electrowinning."

Bench-scale laboratory tests were made by the Bureau of Mines of a segregation-flotation concentrate, assaying 20.43 percent copper, to investigate the influence of various ratios and concentrations of ammonia and carbon dioxide on copper extraction. Leaching the concentrate with a solution containing 900 pounds of ammonia and 360 pounds of carbon dioxide per ton of feed, followed by washing the leach residue with 1.75 tons of a 10-percent solution of ammonium carbonate and about 1 ton of water (as steam) per ton of solids, resulted in a copper recovery of 96.3 percent. Resegregation and flotation tests of the washed residues revealed that 85 percent of the copper in the residue could be recovered. Steam distillation tests of a typical ammoniacal leach liquor, assaying 39 grams copper, 105 grams ammonia, and 77 grams carbon dioxide per liter, recovered over 99 percent of the copper as a mixed oxide-carbonate precipitate. The ammonia losses in leaching, filtering, washing, and distillation were 0.12 pound per pound of copper recovered in the precipitate. Calcination and subsequent hydrogen reduction of the precipitate yielded a metallic copper powder assaying 98 percent Cu, 0.87 percent Si02, 0.10 percent MgO, 0.54 percent CaO, and 0.41 percent R203.

It is anticipated that many future uranium mines in Australia will be using the in situ leaching mining process. It is fair to say that close to one third of uranium production will be generated by this method, whilst the other two thirds will fall on the uranium generated from hard rock mining and other mining methods, such as traditional open cut mining. For other types of deposits the in situ leaching mining method will remain the best technological, commercial and environmental alternative. It is important to identify and prevent all risks involved in uranium mining. The expertise in this subject is limited. Over the years there was only one mine using the in situ leaching process for uranium extraction in Australia. Computer simulation of propagation of leachate during and after the uranium in situ leaching is a crucial factor, not only for addressing the environmental concerns, but also for the most efficient recovery of the deposit. The decontamination can be modelled for a period of up to 100 years, with the acid neutralisation forecast for a period of up to 400 years. The results of the modelling are paramount for definition of the reserves, efficiency of the mining method and the environmental impact statement. The accuracy of the hydrogeological modelling and carefully selected environmental management program enables a mining company to quantify and minimise the impact of the mining activities on the regional aquifer and to prevent environmental disasters. In the study, the completed hydrogeological model allowed the client, the authorities and the community to make an informed decision about the environmental impact of the in situ leaching of uranium. In particular, the model proved that neither during the mining, nor during the neutralisation the toxic elements would interact with the local catchment area.

Pyrite cinders is a complex raw material, in which the valuable metals are: Au(2.04 g/t), Ag(35.0 g/t), Cu(0.38%), Zn(1.1%) and Fe(56.0%). In this case high costs for mining and ore processing are not required. The hydrometallurgical treatment of pyrite cinders using thiourea, sulfite and cyanide solutions are examined in this paper. It was found that thiourea leaching is ineffective due to high consumption of thiourea and sulfuric acid. The cyanidation on pyrite cinders was conducted. Various options of the preparation of the products for the subsequent cyanidation have been examined. The tests on cyanidation process optimization were conducted. The effectiveness of these cementation methods by metallic iron or extraction for copper recovery from water phase has been shown. Zinc precipitation can be found in the form of carbonate. In order to recover noble metals from cyanide solutions, the cementation onto zinc dust was tested. The developed technology provides for recovery at 49-56%Au, 20-25%Ag, 22.5%Cu and 50%Zn during NaCN (1.4 kg/t) and CaO (6 kg/t) consumption. The results of pilot plant testing are the basis for technical regulations in order to design a pyrite cinders treatment plant. The technology has been examined in pilot-plant conditions. In this case the recovery of 54.5%Au, 45.3%Ag, 30%Cu and 49.9%Zn was achieved to provide saleable products. Keywords: pyrite cinders, thiourea leaching

The water situation in Nevada mineral and related industries is described in this report. It contains information on the sources and adequacy of supply to current operators, requirements and uses, quality and costs, geography, hydrography, precipitation and evaporation characteristics, and Nevada water laws. Also, information is given on the water requirements of one public utility powerplant, and the source and consumption of water in four major cities. Water distribution at 24 operations is shown on schematic waterflow diagrams. The mineral industries of Nevada in 1962 used 8.6 billion gallons of nee' water and reused 3.8 billion gallons for a total usage of 12.4 billion gal¬lons. The copper industry was the major water user. The 1962 value of all mineral production in Nevada was $85.5 million. The large amount of water required to maintain this high production is obtained principally from ground-water sources in alluvial valleys and the permeable rock formations of some mountain ranges. Some water is also obtained from perennial streams and springs. Sources of water utilized by existing industry ore near most mineral industry operations; however, seven companies are forced to pipe water distances ranging from 2 to 8 miles. Although water supplies of presently operating companies are adequate at most operations, several companies resort to large-scale reuse of water as a matter of conservation and economics. Acquisition of water by new operators is possible but takes considerable negotiation. Water rights, surface and underground, are controlled by the State. The quality of the water is satisfactory for most purposes. Analyses of 19 samples, listed in the appendix, show the range in water quality at various plants throughout the State. Costs of delivering new water to current operations range from 2 to 26 cents per 1,000 gallons with an average of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. No firm costs for recirculating water were available; estimated costs range from 1.5 to 2.5 cents per 1,000 gallons. The mineral-product value of the entire Nevada mineral industry in 1962 was equivalent to $10 per 1,000 gallons of new water and $26 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the Nevada mineral industry indicates that the demand for new water will increase from 8.6 billion gallons in 1962 to 11.9 billion gallons in 1980, a 43-percent increase. Water requirements ill the year 2000 are estimated as 14.8 billion gallons, an increase over 1962 water demand of 78-percent.

The term “joint venture” is used because the author is a common law solicitor (a matter of convenience for which apologies are offered to civil law readers), but it should be noted that, in many aspects, the legal structure of an entity is irrelevant. In order to search for a more economical and effective roasting additive for extracting vanadium from stone coal and solve the question of the disposal of PVC waste, PVC waste was proposed as a novel roasting additive to enhance extraction of vanadium from stone coal and realize the comprehensive utilization of resources. By adding this roasting additive, the leaching rate of vanadium reached 94.5% under the conditions that the PVC waste addition was 10 wt%, the roasting temperature was 800 °C, the roasting time was 1 h, the sulfuric acid concentration was 15 vol%, the liquid-to-solid ratio was 1.5 cm3 /g, the leaching temperature was 95 °C, and leaching time was 4 h, which increased by 8.4% compared with that of blank roasting. The thermodynamics calculation showed that the decomposition reaction of mica was performed easier with the participation of HCl produced by pyrolysis of PVC. Meanwhile, The SEM-EDS and aperture test analyses demonstrated that more cracks and voids appeared in the roasted sample by roasting with PVC waste, which could facilitate the release and extraction of vanadium. Additionally, the TG-DSC analyses indicated that PVC could provide large amounts of heat for the roasting process to promote the decarbonization and roasting efficiency of stone coal because of its high calorific value.

The Changement mine in French Guyana has, since 1983, processed gold ore by classical gravity methods. A large part of the gold is in the form of very small, free or enclosed grains. Recovery by gravity methods is thus limited (25-30%) and the present plant produces about 40,000 t annually of auriferous waste assaying about 6 git. The company therefore decided to retreat the waste by heap cyanidation. After laboratory tests which showed the feasibility of the method, a pilot test was set up on site. An experimental 3000 t heap, composed of waste of 0-8 mm grain size, was laid out by bucket loader on an impermeable pad covered by PVC and geotextile cloth. The upper layer of the heap was reworked by mechanical shovel to break up the area that had been compacted by the passage of the loader so as to restore adequate permeability.

Implementation of post-closure draindown estimates for tailings facilities are important predictive tools for reclamation planning and often influence jurisdictional bonding. Simplified estimates of draindown have been proposed in the past but these methods are not able to capture many of the site-specific nuances as well as operational and material parameters that influence robust draindown estimates. This paper discusses an iterative approach that relies on unsaturated flow models to predict draindown rates and associated pond inventory water balances that track inputs into underdrain pond systems, solution storage volumes, implementation of active evaporation, and necessary recirculation of solution back to the tailings facilities. Specific design criteria such as climate, facility geometry, material properties, and initial conditions, as well as active closure operational considerations that can influence draindown estimate will be discussed. Concepts presented will be valuable for operators, designers, and regulators to guide closure planning and predictive analytical analyses that support draindown estimates.

The conversion of maf coal to pyridine solubles and gas was investigated in a microautoclave batch reactor for two Kentucky washed coal samples (Ky. #9 and Ky. #11). Solvent hydrogen donor strength was controlled by the tetralin content of a mixed 1-methyl naphthalene-tetralin solvent. Primary liquefaction conversions greater than 90% in 10 minutes of reaction time at 427°C were achieved in liquefaction solvents with moderate hydrogen-donor strength (circa 40% tetralin). A modified irreversible first order rate expression, containing a parameter (a) to account for the intrinsic reactives of the maf coal, described the experimental kinetic data rather well. The integrated form of this rate expression is -k1e x = a (a- ß)e (eq. 1) Parameter ß in equation (I) is the pyridine solubility of the starting maf feed coal, x is the primary liquefaction fractional number of conversion, k1 is the specific reaction velocity constant and ? is reaction time. Primary liquefaction rate was found to be quite temperature sensitive and independent of coal when a liquefaction solvent containing 40% or more tetralin was employed. Primary liquefaction rate appears to depend on liquefaction solvent hydrogen donor strength for solvents containing = 40 wt.% tetralin. The intrinsic reactives in the maf feed coal or a appear to depend mainly on the inertinite group maceral content of the coal for the two coals studied in liquefaction solvents containing 3 40wt.% tetralin. In contrast, a appears to decrease in liquefaction solvents of low donor strength., i.e; solvents with less than 40wt.% tetralin.

Cost Systems Cost systems are organized methods of collecting, allocating, and accumulating resource utility expressed in terms of money. There are two major spheres of cost accumulation: financial accounting and cost accounting. Financial accounting deals primarily with historical costs and provides a means of measuring and recording cost events which have al¬ready taken place. While there are no legal requirements to control the methods of recording and reporting cost data in the United States, the procedures in use are guided by professional organizations such as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. The final pro¬ducts of financial accounting practices are the income statement and balance sheet which describe the financial status of the organization under study. Cost or managerial accounting is an expansion of financial ac¬counting procedures, providing more detailed cost breakdowns on present operations with one objective being the projection of present costs into the future. The projection process tends to limit the accuracy of the information; however, to management and project justification per¬sonnel, data on future operations tends to be of greater value. The basic principle behind cost accounting is the cost cycle. As products are developed from raw materials, the value of the work-in¬process increases due to the cost input of the various fabricating ele¬ments. Thus, from the basic input elements of facilities, labor, and raw materials, costs are added to each unit of production as a function of the work performed on that unit.

Measurements have been made of the variation of internal friction with temperature for OFHC copper, and for a series of binary solid solutions of high purity copper with zinc, gallium, germanium, arsenic, and silicon, to investigate the effect of alloying elements in substitutional solid solution on grain boundary viscosity. The apparatus used was of the torsional pendulum type developed by KeI1 modified so that the specimen and vibrating system could be maintained in a high vacuum. The activation energy for grain boundary relaxation in copper is 33,000 cal per mol. This is considerably less than the activation energy for self-diffusion, in disagreement with Ke's theory2 that the two activation energies should be the same. All the alloying elements increase the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation to approximately 44,000 cal per mol, increasing the grain boundary viscosity at a given temperature. The results are discussed in terms of theories of grain boundary slip put forward by MottQ and by Ke.+ Experiments have also been made to investigate the effect of small amounts of oxygen on the variation of internal friction with temperature for copper. EXPERIMENTS described in this paper were designed to investigate the effect of alloying elements in substitutional solid solution on grain boundary viscosity, using the internal friction method developed by Kel for measuring grain boundary viscosity. It was considered desirable to make the system under investigation as simple as possible by making experiments on a comprehensive series of binary alloys of copper with the elements immediately following it in the periodic table, i.e., zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic. These elements are within the range of favorable size factor for solution in copper, and the systems have been extensively investigated by Hume-Rothery and his co-workers." Later, in order to study the effect of the relative size of the solvent and solute atoms, experiments were made on a series of Cu-Si alloys, since the apparent atomic diameter of silicon when in solution in copper—the diameter necessary to assign to the solute atoms to account for the lattice constant of the solid solutiona—is almost the same as that of the solvent atoms. Preliminary experiments were made to measure the variation of internal friction with temperature for pure copper. Ke made some experiments on copper," but found that the curves obtained were not reproducible in consecutive experiments. The copper was maintained in an argon atmosphere during the experiments but, although he took precautions to exclude oxygen, Ke came to the conclusion that the precautions were not entirely satisfactory, and that the lack of reproducibility must be due to absorption of oxygen by the copper. Experiments have therefore been made to investigate the effect of small amounts of oxygen on the variation of internal friction with temperature for copper. Previous Work Ke made extensive experiments on high purity aluminum and was able to show that the grain boundaries behave viscously at high temperatures. He found that the relative rate of movement of the grains could be expressed as Where v is the velocity of slip, A is the constant, u is the shear stress, H is the activation energy, R is the gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. By assuming that the boundary layer was one atom thick, he obtained a value for the viscosity which, when extrapolated to the melting point, gave good agreement with the viscosity of the liquid metal at the melting point. Ke also made experiments on other high purity and commercial purity metals:, and on some alloys." "The exploitation of marine resources has enjoyed renewed interest with a completely new sector, that of the Deep Sea Mining of mineral resources in the seabed, that is now gaining momentum. Nevertheless, the significant environmental constraints represent a challenge for initiating these new activities, whether this is in terms of the knowledge of the concerned ecosystems or in terms of monitoring and minimizing the impact of these new activities. This paper presents 2 technologies that aim to respond to the expectations of the stakeholders in this area. The first consists of the real-time monitoring of installations/operations and their impact on the environment using the most modern underwater technologies and especially long-term deployment AUV based on AUV docking station solution and autonomous long term observatories. The second consists of a membrane allowing the confinement of an area, the reduction of the emission of particles in suspension and noise reduction.IntroductionDeep ocean environments have been explored since the mid-1800s. As the land-based reserves of hydrocarbons and minerals become depleted, increasing numbers of resourcebased projects are being proposed for shallow then deepwater environments. "The assimilation of exothermic additions in liquid metals exhibit an array of unique coupled heat, mass and momentum transport phenomena. These phenomena are further complicated by the presence of a moving boundary.This paper describes a) A mathematical model which simulates the complex phenomena, and b) An extensive verification of the mathematical model. The SIMPLER algorithm was employed to solve numerically the pertinent partial differential equations. The computational results indicated that the exothermic heat of mixing led to a rapid increase in temperature around the moving boundary, which produced an enhanced convective flow in the liquid phase. The intensification of fluid flow around the moving boundary resulted in an acceleration of the melting process.Verification of the model was carried out in two contexts. The first was, in a low temperature physical model consisting of ice immersion in different sulfuric acid solutions. In this physical model, both temperature and velocity measurements were carried out. The model results were compared with experimental measurements and they were found to be in excellent agreement. The second context employed high temperatures, involving the assimilation of silicon in high carbon liquid iron. The model was also applied to predict fluid flow, heat and mass transfer for these high temperature experiments and a good agreement was obtained.In addition new dimensionless heat transfer correlations that quantify these complex phenomena will be presented."

China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of non-ferrous metals. In recent years, significant progress has been made in research and commercial application of pressure leaching technology to produce some nonferrous metals. Research and development activities include a low-pressure, low-temperature leaching technology for complex copper concentrates, a hematite process to treat pressure leach solutions from zinc concentrates, and a pressure leaching - solvent extraction process for molybdenum and rhenium. Examples of commercial practices include a two-stage pressure leach technology in a zinc plant in Danxia, a direct leaching technology in a zinc plant in Zhuzhou, a high pressure acid leaching process for a nickel laterite project in RAMU, and a pressure leaching technology to treat arsenic sulfides in a plant in Guixi. The development of pressure leaching technology for the recovery of lead, vanadium, gallium, germanium, and precious metals in China will also be described in this paper.
