The purpose of this paper is to discuss production and roof control problems associated with directional lateral stresses in an in situ stress field and the approach that Inland Steel Coal Company made in trying to cope with them. Before proceeding, a description of the mine location, product, geology, restraints, and mine history is in order. The mine is located in Hamilton County in Southeastern Illinois. It produces a high volatile metalurgical coal and is slated to produce 2.1 MTY. Product ion is in the Illinois No. 5 seam at a depth of 930 feet, approximately 490 feet below sea level. The scam height averages from 5.5 to 6.0 feet throughout the reserves with height increasing in the eastern reserve area to approximately feet and a 5 Foot average in the West. The scam tends to dip to the North, North East, but is locally very undulating. The Galatia channel washout outlines the eastern boundary of the reserves and there is a split coal area toward the central part of the property than runs south-southeast. The top above the #5 seam is laminated medium gray shale called Dykersburg. Individual shale bedding planes vary locally From ½ to 1" in thickness to a more normal thickness of 1 to 1 ½ with some areas being interlayed by thin carboncous material. The top normally must be considered as materially competent. Even though the mine is still relatively small in area with only 1.3 million tons of total production to (late, we have encountered dense zones of slicker sides and premining, stress cracks (joints). There are also areas of siltstone, that vary from a few inches to several feet thick, and areas of rider coal, clay instrusions, and rolls. We have crossed lineament concentrations that show strong evidence of corelation to localise top problems. These are being monitored closely to see their predictability on our present and future mining conditions. The face cleat runs N 55° E and butt cleat runs S. 25° E. On a regional basis, there are several anticlinal belts that trend in a northerly direction. The one major restraint is that Inland does not own surface subsidence rights. Therefore, a partial extraction mining plan is being followed. The Holland-Gaddy formula for pillar strength design is used to calculate theortical pillar sides. When production began in March of 1979, it was noted that ground control problems occurred as we drove north entries. East-west cross cuts tended to have better working conditions. This phenomia occurred from a couple hundred feet, but seemed to dispate as we got away from the men and material shafts. Once the production shaft was connected and enough entries extended for installation of belts, ground control problems were again experienced in north-south headings. It was also observed that when mining north-south headings with east-west crosscuts, if the crosscut was driven through ahead and supported, the intersection was stable upon entry connection. This held true even where fairly extreme ground control, problems were encountered. The reverse held true. when driving east-west headings with north-south crosscuts. At this time, we started searching in earnest for a working theory to explain this roof phenomia. It also became the first step of what eventually was a four step sequence to derive a workable solu¬tion to the problem. The combination of the many geological changes and the fact that north-south condition was at times intermitent, helped to disguise the stress field. The mine also being in a fairly virgin area with no mines in approximately 25 milt, radius, meant we didn't have a reliable case history to examine. Various theories were researched before it was concluded that our primary ground control problem was a directional lateral stress Field, with the major stress axis in an east-west direction. In view of the importance of the application of scientific principles to the production of oil from the reservoir, the Production Staff of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. (late Anglo-Persian Oil Co.) has been engaged for some years on an intensive program of research on the physical properties of crude oil. Problems involving the retention of crude oil in capillaries and fine fissures demanded for their solution a knowledge of the surface tension and specific gravity of the crude under reservoir conditions, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the methods adopted for the determination of these properties, and to present the more important results. A detailed article was published in volume 1 of the World Congress Proceedings (1933). Surface-tension observations on crude oil regassed at high pressures with natural gases have been made in the past by Beecher and Park-hurstl and Swartz2, but up to the time of the investigations in Iran no one seems to have carried out experiments with gas-saturated crude direct from the reservoir and kept at its original pressure. Results obtained in this manner are obviously of greater practical value for solving problems connected with the reservoir. Method of Measurement No apparatus for the measurements, under the pressure conditions involved, was available, and a suitable instrument had to be designed and constructed in the Fields workshops. Careful consideration of the matter led to the adoption of a method for measuring the surface tension which did not involve a knowledge of the specific gravity of the oils under the working conditions: the main reason for this being that up to that time no accurate determination of the specific gravity had been made under these conditions. THIS note gives comments on the paper by Kitaev et al on p. 68 of this book and compares results with those obtained by ourselves. We wish to say that the authors are to be congratulated on their sophisticated approach to an important problem and that it complements our efforts on flow maldistribution.1-5 It is our view that Eqs. (1)-(5) on p. 69 are impressive, but unfortunately with present day computers and computational facilities, it would be quite impractical to contemplate the numerical solution of these. Eq. (8) in the authors' paper, on p. 70, does provide the logical starting point for tackling flow maldistribution problems and strictly speaking this equation is more accurate than Eq. (1) in our paper in this book. We note in passing that there is direct experimental evidence to support the contention that our Eq. (1) is at least a reasonable approximation and one may question in a practical sense whether the refinement afforded by Eq. (8) in the paper by Kitaev et a/ is justified. While one must readily accept the appropriateness of Eq. (8) of Kitaev et al as a starting point, the subsequent mathematical manipulation by the authors is open to serious criticism. In order to solve this complex, non-linear equation Kitaev et al postulated irrotational flow, which afforded considerable simplification. One can argue simply on physical grounds that the assumption of irrotational flow is inappropriate, a fact which should be readily apparent on inspection of the flow fields shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of Kitaev's paper. It follows that while the starting point through the use of Eq. (8) is correct the results derived from this starting point may be suspect because of the erroneous nature of the irrotational flow assumption.

Freeman, the English historian, said that he had learned from Macaulay "never to be afraid of using the same word or name over and over again if by that means anything could be added to clearness or force. Macaulay never goes. on, like some writers, talking about ' the former ' and 'the latter ', 'he ', 'she ', 'it), and 'they’, through clause after clause, while his reader has to look back to see which of several persons it is that is so darkly referred to". He might have learned also from Macaulay that a preposition makes a feeble ending for a serious statement. How often do you hear 'the former' and 'the latter' in conversation? Good conversation is a guide not to be disdained. When you must use 'the latter ', do not confuse it with 'the last '. Cheap labor, cheap fuel, and cheap transport are essential, the latter [last] being particularly important in base-metal mining. The apparatus may be used to determine such gases as hydrogen sulphide, chlorine, oxides of nitrogen and some others, as well as sulphur dioxide. In the case of the latter two, etc. The two last mentioned are "sulphur dioxide" and "some others". He should have stated which two, and he should have avoided that wretched phrase "in the case of ". Pinning may be partly prevented by use of chalk, oil, or turpentine. The latter [last] is beat. "Partly prevented" is a poor phrase. 'Prevented' is a word that does not lend itself readily to modification. He means ' checked ' or 'corrected '. These steps are necessary to produce the gas, crude oil, and ammonia, the latter [last] of which is in solution in the water obtained along with the oil.

Results are presented of the investigation of gas dynamics of the blast furnace process obtained on laboratory models and operating furnaces. Gas residence times were measured using a helium tracer technique developed for the purpose. Residence times were determined in furnaces of 1007 m3 and 1719 m3 and results used in the calculation of the burden parameters and to estimate the distribution of the gas flow along the furnace radius. The effect of tuyere injection of coal dust on gas distribution was also investigated and the advantage of continuous injection compared with intermittent injection is noted. The unevenness of gas distribution across the furnace area is found to correlate well with differences in the size analysis of the iron-bearing component of the burden. The mixing of the gas streams between the neighbouring raceways was studied. It is shown that in the central region of the furnace gases from every tuyere are mixed together, whilst in the peripheral regions mixing is more localised and includes only the sections consisting of five adjacent tuyeres. A solution is proposed to the problem of a theoretical evaluation of the critical gas velocity. A simple relationship between the Reynolds and the Archimedes numbers was obtained from which, after substitution of the burden size data and the gas parameters, it is -possible to evaluate the critical gas velocity. Conclusions include information relating to the optimisation of the gas distribution and views on reducing gas injection at elevated furnace levels.

Improve the reliability and accuracy of subsurface images using constrained tomography with enhanced ray-tracing capabilities. Background Geophysical tomography is a technique for imaging the structure of a rock mass using seismic or radio waves, in the same way that medical CAT scans image human tissue using X-rays. Tomography has found numerous practical applications related to mining, including lithologic and structural characterization, fracture detection and fluid monitoring, void detection, and evaluation of stress state and integrity of mine structures. Problems Two fundamental problems have largely prevented geophysical tomography from enjoying the tremendous success achieved by medical tomography. The first is a consequence of practical limitations on the placement of sources and receivers of wave energy: ideal resolution can be attained only when the region being imaged is entirely surrounded by sources and receivers, so that it is crossed by rays traveling in all possible directions. When such coverage is impossible or impractical, the inversion becomes underdetermined: there id not enough information in the measured data to provide a mathematically unique solution. The second major problem in geophysical tomography is the necessity for detailed ray tracing. Commercial software, as well as previous U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) software, employs a ray-shooting algorithm that may be unable to model some ray paths when velocity contrasts are larger than about 100%. These ?shadow zones" result in loss of data and degradation of reconstructed images.

A new approach has been developed that is capable of ascertaining the ore component that is responsible for the preg­robbing of pregnant pulps. Many gold mines are currently treating ores containing a component that is detrimental to the recovery of gold, in that they "preg-rob" the pregnant pulp by adsorption of some of the dissolved gold. The identity of the preg-robbing component in this type of ore has been the subject of considerable debate over a lengthy period, th various suggestions including amorphous carbon, chlonte, chalcopyrite and layered silicates, such as the phyllosilicate minerals pyrophyllite, kaolinite, phlogopite and illite. A means is now available to identify and characterize the preg-robber in gold ores. This new approach consists of contacting the ore with a synthetic aurocyanide solution, identifying the mineral grains by optical microscopy and analysing each grain individually using high-sensitivity electron microprobe analysis. The approach is exemplified in this initial study by identifying the preg-robbing component in an active sample of gold-bearing shale to be an amorphous carbonaceous phase consisting of discrete particles of about 5 µm diameter interspersed with shale particles and agglomerated into grains of up to 100 µm diameter. Microanalysis of these grains as well as other mineral particles revealed that the gold content of some of the carbonaceous grains was close to 7000 g,lt, with no gold being detected in any of the other mineral phases that were found to be present (e.g. quartz, chlorite, muscovite, pyrophyllite, etc). Bulk analysis of the sample for carbon and gold confirmed that gold loadings of around 7000 g,/t would be expected if all of the gold were adsorbed onto the carbonaceous component. The carbonaceous constituent is probably also responsible for the anomalously high surface area measured for the material. It probably acts in a similar fashion to activated carbon, and the correct choice of organic blinding agent will decrease the extent of preg-robbing by lowering the activity of the material for gold, without causing any downstream problems such as fouling of the activated carbon used for gold recovery

In another paper' the writer has shown that the low permissible maximum fiber stress in a loaded zinc sheet demands a much closer support spacing than is used for steel. The limiting fiber stress in 13-gage (0.032 in.) sheets having a 1-in. depth of corrugation was found to be about 5000 lb. per sq. in. on a 37-in. span under a load of 40 Ib. per sq. ft. Corrugated steel sheets are commonly laid with spans varying from 48 to 60 in. In order to increase the span in 13-gage zinc to 54 in. (a common spacing) the metal must be capable of withstanding, under long-continued loading, a maximum fiber stress of about 10,000 lb. per sq. in. This is known to be impossible with unalloyed zinc. In this paper the writer describes a series of experiments leading up to the development of an alloy capable of safely sustaining this fiber stress. The effect of alloying on the slow creep of zinc was studied by means of static tensile tests, accurate determinations of apparent elastic limits and finally by means of loading tests on full-size roof sections. Two industrial buildings roofed with alloyed zinc sheets on spans involving fiber stresses in excess of 10,000 lb. per sq. in. have been under observation for over two years without signs of sagging. Experimental Work Two methods of increasing the maximum permissible fiber stress in zinc were considered. Cold rolling, which' increases the stiffness and tensile strength, was found to decrease the resistance to slow flow. Alloying, therefore, provided the only feasible means of obtaining the desired result, It was recognized that the improvement secured by the solid solution of natural impurities was insufficient. It then outlines the performance characteristics and inherent problems of the traditional 12-degree, tapered connection, blade-type insert bits. Service-free (Unipass) button-type insert bits are presented as a possible solution to these problems. The paper concludes with an analysis of button bit performance to date.Brief History of Madawaska MinesMadawaska Mines Limited, near Bancroft, Ontario, is in Faraday Township, Hastings County, approximately 100 miles northeast of Toronto and 100 miles west of Ottawa.The mine re-opened in 1976committed to 1,500 tons per day to provide approximately 600,000 pounds of yellowcake (U3O8) per year to A.G.I.P. (an Italian government agency) under the joint ownership of Federal Resources Corporation, Salt Lake City (51%), and Consolidated Canadian Faraday Limited (49%). At present, the mine is producing approximately 2 pounds per ton (.1% U3O8) at the rate of 60,000 pounds per month. The mine employs about 400 employees.Brief Description of Geology, Mining Methods and EquipmentGeologyThe Grenville metasediments of the mine area are chiefly paragneiss, amphobolite and some carbonate (marble) rocks, which were intruded by a basic rock, altered to a metagabbrometadiorite. These formations are generally concordant, striking east to northeast and dipping 45 to 60 degrees to the south. Locally, the metagabbro is often discordant. The above group of rocks (mixed hybrid gneisses) forms the hanging wall of the south-dipping Faraday granite sheet and was intruded by nepheline syenite, syenite and granite. The ore occurs in the granite-syenite-pegmatite dykes that are probably genetically related to the Faraday granite. The ore shoots are erratically distributed within the pegmatite bodies, mainly on the hanging or footwalls but also medially. Their size varies from 50 to 350 feet in length, 5 to 40 feet in width and 50 to 200 feet in height. The ore occurs most frequently in a medium-grained granite or syenite, well hematized with 10 to 30% mafic crystals of pyroxene, amphibole and/or relics of the host rock."

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni-0. 7 to 2.3 pct A1 alloys has been measured up to the solubility limit for the formation of aluminum nitride in the temperature range 1600° to 1700°C uszng the Sieverts' method. The solubility of nitrogen in 18-8 stainless steel increases with increasing aluminum content. Based on a nitride composition, AlN, the standard free energy of formation of aluminum nitride from the elements dissolved in liquid 18-8 stainless-steel alloys has been determined to be: ?G° = -42,500 + 20. IT in the range from 1600° to 1700° C. EVANS and pehlke1 have measured the equilibrium conditions for the formation of aluminum nitride, AlN, in liquid Fe-A1 alloys. The present study extends that work to the more complex solvent, liquid 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni (18-8) stainless steel. Recent work by Small and pehlke2 has dealt with the effect of fourth-element additions on the solubility of nitrogen in 18-8 base alloys. They found the effect of aluminum additions, up to 0.74 pct, on the solubility of nitrogen to be small. The present study covered the range from 0.74 to 2.28 pct aluminum, and by extending the composition range may be used to better define the effect of aluminum on the nitrogen solubility in these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The Sieverts' method was used to measure the equilibrium solubility of nitrogen gas in liquid 18-8 stainless steel alloys containing 0.74, 1.49, 1.93, and 2.28 pct Al. The solubility was measured as a function of the nitrogen gas pressure at temperatures of 1600°, 1650°, and 1700°C. The apparatus used is the same as described by Small and Pehlke.2 The 100-g melts were made from Ferrovac-E high-purity iron, Crucible Steel Co.; 99.95 pct Cr, Union Carbide Corp.; 99.9 pct Ni, International Nickel Co.; and 99.99+ pct Al, Aluminum Co. of America. The aluminum was charged at the bottom of the crucible, surrounded by nickel and iron. The chromium was packed into the interstices to minimize vapor transport of the aluminum during initial melting. The hot volume of the system, measured for each melt with argon, ranged from 45 to 55 standard cu cm with a temperature coefficient of —8 x 10-3 cu cm per °C. The melt temperature was measured with a Leeds and Northrup disappearing-filament type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the center of the melt surface. The temperature calibration of the system by Small and pehlke2 was assumed. Two problems are involved in determining the solubility product of a solid, metal nitride phase in liquid iron alloys. These are: 1) establishing the point of departure from Henrian behavior at the solubility limit of the metal nitride phase; and 2) determining the composition of the solid nitride which is precipitated. Determination of the solubility product of AlN was made by admitting small amounts of nitrogen into the reaction bulb until the deviation from Sieverts' law was clearly evident in the form of a pressure halt. To obtain the solubility product at several temperatures during one run the following procedure was used: 1) add increments of nitrogen to determine the Sieverts' law line at the lowest desired temperature; 2) continue to add nitrogen to precipitate a small amount of the nitride phase; 3) increase the melt temperature 50°C to dissolve the precipitated nitride; 4) repeat step 2 until either a nitride formed or the system reached ambient pressure; if a nitride formed at 1650°C, the sequence was repeated at 1700°C. The composition of the precipitated phase was checked by an X-ray diffraction pattern obtained from powder scraped from the surface of the solidified 1.93 pct A1 melt. RESULTS AND DISCUSSlON Solubility Measurements. Fig. 1 is a typical nitrogen-absorption curve obtained from measurements on a 1.93 pct A1 alloy. Since the initial absorption of nitrogen follows Sieverts' law the nitrogen solubility is plotted as a function of the square root of the pressure of nitrogen gas in the reaction bulb. The results of the solubility measurements for all alloys studied are summarized in Table I. The slope of the Sieverts' law line for each alloy was determined. Since this is also the solubility of nitrogen at 1 atm pressure of nitrogen gas, the latter designation is used for the data. It should be noted. however, that in most cases the value lies above the solubility limit for AlN. Fig. 2 shows the effect of aluminum on the solubility of nitrogen at this reference pressure and as a function of melt temperature. The solid portions of the lines represent attainable solutions; the dashed regions lie above the limit for precipitation of AlN.

AT the new Graham-Central Mill of Eagle-Picher, near Galena, Ill., material is simultaneously dewatered and introduced into the ball-mill scoop boxes by the use of variable-speed, 24-in. spiral classifiers. This arrangement has proved satisfactory in that the moisture content of the wet feed is reduced, thus allowing maintenance of density within the mills, and a constant feed at any desired rate to the mills is provided. In this mill the primary feed is wet crushed to minus 1/2 in. and preconcentrated by jigs to produce a bulk lead-zinc-iron concentrate and a waste tailing. The jig concentrate is then dewatered by a conventional dewatering classifier and stored in bins ahead of the ball mills. Even though this material is well dewatered, the discharge at the bin bottom is sloppy because of the gradual drainage of the water from the surface of the particles. Conventional belt feeders with vertical cutoff gates are unsatisfactory because of the flushing characteristic of the wet sand. The new installation employs 24 in. x 10 ft, 9-in. Simplex double-pitch spiral classifiers for feeders from the bin bottoms to the ball mill scoop boxes (fig. 1). These units are arranged with straight tanks and are driven by 5 hp motors through a U. S. Vari-Drive to provide a 4 to 1 speed ratio. Each bin discharges through a chute into the rising side of the spiral. The flushing characteristic of the material from the bottom of the bin is utilized to maintain a steady feed. A small amount of water tapped into the bottom of the bin insures uniform feed to the classifier. Excess clear water drains over the weirs. Feed rate to the mills is controlled by the variable-speed drives. The feed delivered by the spiral at a given speed setting is relatively dry, uniform, and steady, and as such is easily controlled by the operator. The classifiers are set on a pitch of 5 in. per ft and have a sand-raking capacity of from 8 to 32 tons per hr. It is believed that the solution of this problem offers possibilities for the storage of deslimed rod-mill sands and other similar products of the industry.

The Research Council of SME, at its Annual Meeting in Reno, NR, in February 1993, held a Research Forum on Technology for the Future. The Forum's purpose was to find out from the members, particularly those from industry, their opinions on research needed in the mineral industries. Panelists were selected for their breadth of knowledge and connections. Many panelists, in turn, solicited opinions from additional contacts. A similar effort is underway with mineral-oriented schools. A parallel mission has been undertaken by the American Mining Congress (AMC) through its Committee on Technology. In particular, AMC is concerned that the needs of industry be transmitted in a timely way to federal agencies, especially the US Bureau of Mines. This article reports to the SME membership the principal findings of the Research Forum. The article is derived from a full report that is available from SME. Many of the calls for research made during the Forum can be clustered into five broad categories. These categories are discussed in the following sections of this article. However, since the time of the Forum, many reviewers of the full report have noticed that fundamental research was not given much emphasis. The Research Council points out that the Forum was organized around industrial needs. There is a call to the academic and research community to organize a similar Forum. The Council emphasizes that this is not the last word on research needs and that the membership is urged to continue to give ideas and opinions to the SME Research Council. There will be an opportunity at its next meeting during the SME Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, NM, Feb. 22, 1994, for open discussion of this report. Because the opinions were intentionally confined to representatives from industry, the problems portrayed and the solutions sought are from the vantage of an operator. It comes as no surprise that many of the espoused research desiderata seek more efficient or cost-effective outcomes for the various mining activities discussed. The order of the Forum was a straightforward set of mining activities: exploration, evaluation, mining and processing.

Simplex double-pitch spiral classifiers for feeders from the bin bottoms to the ball mill scoop boxes (fig. 1). These units are arranged with straight tanks and are driven by 5 hp motors through a U. S. Vari-Drive to provide a 4 to 1 speed ratio. Each bin discharges through a chute into the rising side of the spiral. The flushing characteristic of the material from the bottom of the bin is utilized to maintain a steady feed. A small amount of water tapped into the bottom of the bin insures uniform feed to the classifier. Excess clear water drains over the weirs. Feed rate to the mills is controlled by the variable-speed drives. The feed delivered by the spiral at a given speed setting is relatively dry, uniform, and steady, and as such is easily controlled by the operator. The classifiers are set on a pitch of 5 in. per ft and have a sand-raking capacity of from 8 to 32 tons per hr. It is believed that the solution of this problem offers possibilities for the storage of deslimed rod-mill sands and other similar products of the industry.

Introduction Uranium mining has been actively carried on in Canada for over twenty-five years mainly in Ontario at Elliot Lake in Bancroft, and in Northern Saskatchewan at the operations of Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. During this period, approximately one hundred million tons of mill tailings have been created and lie mainly on the surface close to the mining and milling installations. If all of the present reserves of uranium ores in Canada are mined, a further eight hundred million tons of mine tailings could be created in Ontario, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Labrador and British Columbia. The present control of effluents from existing tailings is managed by the operating mines under the regulations of both federal and provincial control agencies. It is the long-term effect of these tailings on the environment that has not been clearly defined or measured. Several years ago, the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, embarked upon a program of research directed at the long-term effects of uranium mine tailings. Much of the research to date has been on tailings in the Elliot Lake, Ontario area where some tailings piles have existed for over twenty years. The program consists of two projects, one to address the problem of existing tailings and the other to examine alternatives in the management of current and future tailings. TAILINGS CHARACTERISTICS Uranium tailings are generally the result of sulphuric acid leaching in which the uranium and alkaline minerals such as carbonates and chlorites are leached out. If the ore contains sulphides, these minerals potentially present an additional hazard of acid generation over time and could increase the mobility of heavy metals and some radionuclides such as thorium-230. Except for the extracted uranium, most of the radionuclides from the ore remain in the tailings pile. Uranium ores in Canada span a wide variety of mineralization and associated gangue composition. Uranium minerals include pitchblende, uraninite, uranothorite, brannerite and the phosphate uranium minerals autunite and saleeite. Gangue minerals vary from acid consuming carbonates, and chlorites to acid producing sulphides and inert silicates. With such a wide variety in ore composition, the characteristics of the resultant tailings in Canada are in many cases site specific and the solutions to the long-term effects of these tailings may also be site specific.

Provide the mining industry with a method for determining the gas content of ore bodies and associated strata for use in mine planning, Approach Samples of various rock types are collected and tested to determine gas content in conjunction with sample size, the collection method (i.e. whether the sample was collected from a core sample or by hand) mine gas emission, and the geologic location from which the sample was taken, such as near a fault, outburst area, or other geologic anomaly. How It Works Two methods were developed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the gas contents of rock samples. The first method developed involved dissolving minerals to measure gas emission. This method, however, can only be used with soluble minerals. A second method, therefore, was developed for use with insoluble minerals. With this method, the sample is crushed in a ball mill. Although the dissolution method is faster and more accurate to use, the crushing method is also advantageous because its use can more closely approximate a mining situation; the sample is crushed as in mining and the amount of gas released relates to the amount of gas that would be released during a mining operation. The dissolution method is applied to soluble minerals, such as rock, salt, or trona, in a sealed chamber. Gases released during dissolution are collected for analysis by gas chromatography. One advantage in using the dissolution method is that the test apparatus is relatively inexpensive. In addition, test can be performed at any scale, from single crystal samples to a solution mining operation.

"The aim of this study is to prepare the apatitic material using colemanite mineral (2CaO.3B2O3.5H2O) which was obtained from Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. For this purpose, colemanite mineral was reacted with different phosphate sources, namely, dipotassiumhydrogen phosphate, ammoniumhydrogen phosphate and ortophosphoric acid at various temperatures and time periods. Experiments were run in batch system. The apatitic material was prepared by a wet method and followed by heat treatment at various temperatures. Structure of the samples was analyzed by XRD, FTIR, XRF and SEM. The particle size analysis was also made for the result product. The experiments showed that reaction temperature, contact time and heating temperature are important parameters to transform the colemanite into apatitic structure. Reaction of colemanite with dipotassiumhydrogen phosphate and ammoniumhydrogen phosphate results in amorphous, non-stoichiometric hydroxyapatite type structure, while acid based phosphate source gives brushite and monetite type product before and after heat treatment, respectively.IntroductionBoron which has properties intermediate between metals and non-metals is a member of semiconductor group of elements. Its atom is very small and has three valence electrons. Boron exists in Earth's crust (from 5 mg/kg in basalts to 100 mg/kg in shale) and in the oceans (4.5 mg/l) [1]. Turkey has 60% of world's boron reserves which is mostly in the form of colemanite (2Ca0.3B203.5H20). Colemanite is the most important calcium containing commercial borate mineral with 5 mol of crystal water [2].Calcium phosphate cements are very useful for bone repair applications because of its chemical structure. They are injectable, easy to shape and can be maintained locally. Because of those reasons calcium phosphate cements are very effective to fill bone defects with an irregular shape [3]. Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO)6(OHh) is the major component of the bone (70 wt%). However, hydroxyapatite stoichiometry, composition and crystallinity differ in human skeleton system [4, 5].The main objective of the present work was to study the transformation of colemanite to apatitic material using different phosphate solutions at several time spans and temperatures. The experiments were run in a batch system, change in pH and also weight loss were measured after the experiments. Several analysis methods were used to investigate the chemical and structural changes."

Data mining and modelling of operational data involves the discovery of patterns in large datasets for future use in benchmarking and plant optimization. The modern pattern of discovery in large data sets involves statistical techniques, machine learning and new visualization tools. Former examples of data mining are revisited and presented in this document. INTRODUCTION A network of enthusiastic and active professionals is currently developing and maintaining several open source statistical software tools (packages) for data analysis (example Rstudio, Orange, Spyder, etc.). The advantages of the open source software philosophy are the fast development and testing of the solutions presented to the community. Books and support are available for each software application. Since each modern work activity generates massive amounts of data, it is attractive to learn and test those available tools considering that we are at the door of the new work revolution coined as “Mine 4.0”. Data mining involves collecting large datasets, the preparation and cleaning of a dataset (term named data wrangling), the uploading of the data to a database program capable of handling big datasets, the development of prediction models and the presentation of the results. Machine learning techniques help to develop mathematical models and algorithms that could be used to improve the performance on a specific task. Mine operations are producing an incredible amount of data each day and the need to analyze those results seems to be impossible due to the lack of time, as well as the lack of skills to investigate the data collected. If we add to this the traditional habit of working in silos, an additional challenge is to consolidate databases from different departments in search of trends that could help to optimize production.

To me, as to many other students of railroad needs, the necessity for reducing the dead weight in railroad rolling stock, both passenger and freight, has been apparent for, many years. The problem of weight reduction of passenger cars is so entirely different from that of freight cars, is so much more to the fore at the present moment and would seem to be so much nearer solution, that I shall confine myself in these remarks to the former. On the surface of things there would appear to be no close association of thought between the decline in traffic on the railroads, which is largely responsible for their present deplorable financial condition, and new metal alloys. It sounds like a trick riddle a school boy might propound to his parents. But that there is a relationship between the two, and one that bids fair to be of great mutual benefit to the railroads and the makers of .high-strength metal alloys, I hope I shall be able to show before I have finished. To make the situation understandable to those who are not entirely familiar with the problems of railroad management, and, who feel that the railroads have not moved as rapidly as they should in the direction of greater use of newer materials and newer appliances, I shall have to review briefly the course of recent railroad history. If in this part of my talk I seem to the professional man to be a little off key I feel sure my remarks will be fully appreciated by the business man who cannot understand why he is not making better headway in selling things to the railroads. To do this I shall have to go back to war times for a moment.

Ore estimation at Cyprus Pima mine begins with estimating average copper grades for mine model blocks. Accuracy of the estimates has been checked four times in the last several years by comparing the estimates with arithmetic averages of corresponding blasthole (BH) assays. The data file now contains 3.567 estimated blockgrades and more than 10,000 blasthole assays. These data were compared by straight-line regression analysis at appropriate intervals as the body of data grew. Arithmetic averages of the estimates differed each time from arithmetic averages of the BH averages by nearly the same amount. More significantly, regression curves of the new total sets of data did not change position appreciably showing that copper grade estimates of blocks in all grade ranges from the lowest to the highest grade ores remained in error by nearly the same amount. Other studies revealed that core hole assays of the dominant ore type are biased and that that bias almost equals the error in estimation. Discovery of constancy in error indicated that regression analysis could be a means for correcting estimates of average block copper grades. A correction for estimated block grades was developed. It required determining which regression is appropriate for the particular problem, and a mechanism that is demonstrably sound. This paper describes the problem and the solution: No comparable study has been, found in the literature. Two other applications of regression analysis to metal grade comparisons are presented. Each adds a bit of support to a generalization which was suggested by correction of average block copper grades, namely, when performance of an estimate is to be evaluated, the variable taken to be the yardstick for the performance should be regressed on the estimate.
