A method for incorporating well drawdown effect into reservoir calculations is presented in detail, together with examples of its use for widely divergent conditions that could be normally encountered in oil reservoir sands. Tentative conclusions as to the effect such factors as permeability, producing interval, well spacing, or well damage caused by completion or repair practice could have upon economic ultimate recovery are reached. It is carefully pointed out that the conclusions reached are subject to limitations indicated in the text, and placed upon all calculations made in the paper. Introduction Papers have been presentedl-3 in which theoretical depletion histories for reservoirs under equilibrium conditions and no appreciable well-bore drawdown pressure are determined. However, except for a limited number of cases, appreciable drawdown Pressures in a well bore exist, and Pressure and saturation gradients consequently vary throughout a reservoir. This Paper is an attempt to incorporate well-pressure drawdown into reservoir history, and to analyze certain factors, such as those involving recovery, well spacing, and productivity index, from the standpoint of permeability and drainage radius. BY incorporation of drawdown into reservoir history, it is believed that theoretical considerations will more closely approxi- mate actual reservoir behavior experienced in an oil field. For purposes of simplification, a solution gas-drive type field1 without primary gas cap, has been selected. Basic Data and Assumptions Details of equilibrium saturation conditions for no drawdown production for various pressures in a reservoir are deter-minable by methods described by several are permitting the construction of a curve of oil saturation vs Pressure for any selected combination of initial interstitial water and hydrocarbon saturation (Fig I). This curve is then a description of equilibrium saturation conditions at any given pressure in a reservoir. Developing the above, details of saturation and flow permeability may thus be determined for any increment or portion of a well drainage area or reservoir. In this manner the effect of pressure differential (drawdown) may be incorporated into reservoir and well drainage considerations. It is pointed out that this method thus makes use of no-drawdown equilibrium production data, superimposing a draw-hwn effect upon them. It also assumes that net flow conditions in any considered increment of reservoir are not materially altered by the entrance of fluids from other increments into them, but approach equilibrium for the existing pressure and saturation (i.e., each increment behaves in more or less independent fashion, dependent largely upon the equilibrium considerations mentioned above)

Witherbee, of Port Henry, a member of the Local Committee, welcomed the Institute as follows: Mr. President and Gentlemen and (if I my also add) Ladies of the Institute: In the absence of the Chairman of our Local Committee it is my pleasant duty to give you a cordial welcome once more to the shores of Lake Champlain. I think some fourteen years have passed by since we last had the pleasure of receiving you at a meeting in this vicinity ; but the pleasure of that meeting still lingers in our memory; and the profit which we derived from your discussions and from your presence with us has made us heartily desirous to have you here again. If the truth must be known, we were for a time much embarrassed by the difficulty of providing adeqriate and comfortable shelter for the large number of friends whom we hoped (and, as this assembly indicates, had good reason for hoping) to receive. But the liberality and zealous co-operation of the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company and its hotel manager, in offering to open Hotel Champlain, at no little inconvenience, before the usual time, presented a solution of this difficulty, provided the date originally proposed for the meeting could be changed to a week later. THE CHAIRMAN (E. G. SPILSBURY, New York, N. Y.).-The relation of the character of manganese ore to the surrounding rocks was called to my attention very strikingly in a recent investigation in Costa Rica. In the foothills of the main coastal range there is a large deposit of manganese which extends for over 150 miles along the coast. This is in a porphyry district and the occurrences are almost exclusively along the lines of contact between a recent diorite intrusion through the porphyries. Wherever that intrusion appears to have exerted great force, the line of contact is very clear between the porphyries and the diorites. Where the action has been slower and the lifting force of the intrusion more gradual, there has been a zone of fracture of very considerable width. Those ores which occur where the fractured zone has not been very extensive carry a, lower percentage of manganese than where it has been deposited along a wider zone of fracture. In the so-called narrow veins, which are really the predominant ones, the solution carrying the manganese has evidently attacked the silica in the intrusive rock, and the resulting ore is practically a combination of manganese and silica, running froth 20 to 30 per cent. of manganese and from 20 to 40 per cent. of silica: hence those ores are not likely for a long time to become a factor in our manganese supply :for this country. On the other hand, where the disturbance to the porphyritic schist has been more intense; the manganese deposits are not so extensive, but the ore is richer, running from 45 to 51 and 52 per cent. manganese, with a silica content of from 4 to 5 per cent. There seems to be some resemblance in these deposits to those of the Cuyuna range. EDMUND NEWTON, Minneapolis, Minn.-The State Bureau of Mines has been working on the problem of concentrating manganiferous iron ore for two years or more. I should consider hand sorting as the best form of treatment, because it is practised at all of the mines which ship ore for making alloys, but not, however, oil the ore that is being used for pig iron. Hand sorting, assisted by selective mining, is readily applicable to some of this ore because the gangue is practically the original rock and is easily separated. However, it is only in rather limited zones that we find clean patches of rock. Generally the silica exists as a skeleton of the original rock structure, in which the manganese has been precipitated; some of the silica may have been dissolved, but if any of the original rock remains, the silica must be eliminated by ore-dressing processes.

An evident connection exists between chemical and calorific phenomena: the most important, of our sources of heat, the combustion of coal, is nothing else than a chemical reaction. Not satisfied with this indefinite statement, investigators have attempted to establish a more precise correlation between these two orders of phenomena, and have questioned whether there be not a necessary connection between the possibility of a chemical reaction and the algebraic sign of the quantity of heat which it would call into play (i.e., liberate or absorb). This question possesses the highest interest for metallurgical chemists. But the study of it by experimental methods only could not completely elucidate it. To arrive at a definite solution, it was necessary to appeal to a science much more general than chemistry,—namely, that of energetics, which embraces all the physical sciences. We can place absolute confidence in its conclusions, because they rest upon a proposition which can scarcely be denied, namely, the impossibility of The main facts in the history of the development o‡ this field of Triassic coals have been already set before the Institute in the papers of Mr. Oswald J. Heinrich, a former member of the Institute and the superintendent of the mines at Midlothian. † From these and other references to the field, it appears that coal was known to exist here as early as 1701; for on the 10th of May that year Colonel Byrd reported to the Colonial Council of Virginia the discovery of coal. Coal was mined from 1770 to 1780; but the amount shipped is unknown. It was much used in Richmond at this early date for gratefires. In 1789 shipments were made to northern ports. During the first half of the century just passed, mining operations attained in this field their greatest development, the number and extent of the collieries and the tonnage of coal raised per annum being greater for that period than for any similar period since. The maximum annual output exceeded 100,000 tons, while in two years only since the Civil War has the amount of coal raised exceeded 50,000 tons. This field covers about 150 sq. in. Its outline and the position of the strata in which the coal-outcrops occur are shown on the accompanying map, reproduced from the latest survey by the U. S. Geological Survey. Mining has been carried on along the margins of the area, often in the primitive manner in vogue at the beginning of operations, by means of shafts and slopes, usually too small in cross-section to permit the proper working of the beds. The Darwin mining district of California, 160 miles north of Los Angeles, has yielded an estimated $45 million in lead, silver, zinc, and copper since 1875. The deposits are in silicated limestone of Penn-sylvanian and Permian age close to a stock of horn-blende-biotite-quartz monzonite. Steep left-lateral strike-slip faults that strike N 50o 70o E served as feeder channels for the ore solutions, and minor folds, favorable beds, and faults close to the feeder channels localized the orebodies. The orebodies are irregular, steep, pipe-like replacements that cut across bedding, bedding replacements, and fissure fillings in a calc-silicate country rock consisting mainly of wollastonite, grossularite-andradite garnet, idocrase, and diop-side. Near surface the ore consists of a soft, crumbly mass of cerussite, hemimorphite, jarosite, limonite, and some secondary copper minerals. The primary ore consists of galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite with smaller amounts of andorite, matildite, scheelite, tetrahedrite, and a high silver-lead-bismuth-selenium-bearing galena. Preliminary X-ray fluorescence study of the primary ore has indicated unusually high concentrations of bismuth, selenium, and silver in galena from certain parts of the mine. One phase of this study concerns the distribution of these elements. Twenty-two samples of galena and thirty of sphal- erite have been purified and analyzed or are being analyzed. The selenium in 21 samples of galena ranges from 0.0045 to 2.11 pct; four contain more than 1 pct. These four samples were collected from the Essex orebody, where most of the selenium is concentrated. Three are from high-grade, near-surface ore, and one is from the 700 level. Four of the seven analyzed galena samples from the Thompson workings immediately north of the Essex orebody contain 0.29 to 0.74 pct Se; the others show less than 0.05 pct. Galena from the Defiance workings about 2000 ft south of the Essex has less than 0.03 pct Se. The selenium-bearing galena also contains concentrations of bismuth and silver. Preliminary spectographic analyses indicate as much as 3 pct Bi and more than 1 pct Ag in galena with high selenium content. Antimony is the only other minor element present in galena in amounts greater than 0.02 pct; most galena contains between 0.1 and 0.2 pct and the maximum is 0.72 pct. A second phase of the study is an attempt to determine the temperature range of the formation of the ore. The iron content of sphalerite deposited in equilibrium with pyrrhotite is being used as a geologic thermometer as it is a function of the temperature of deposition of the ore.' Preliminary results indicate temperature range from 430°C in replacement orebodies in the Defiance workings to 180°C in shallow fissure fillings.

This report is a continuation of an earlier one with a similar titlell to which the reader is referred for such details of procedure as do not appear here. A brief summary will be given of the objects and methods of the research at this time. It was pointed out in the previous paper that properties of magnesium alloys, as reported by different workers, often differ. This was thought to be due to differences in the preparation of the specimens tested. The ideal way to compare alloys would be to prepare each of them in so many ways that reasonable assurance would exist that the best properties of each alloy had been developed. The alloys would then be compared on the basis of these properties. The treatment actually given the alloys of these studies is necessarily a compromise with completeness. Nevertheless, enough treatments have been given so that a considerable degree of assurance exists that the properties obtained are representative of the alloy as such, and not merely of the manner in which it was worked and heat-treated. Procedure The alloys were cast in the form of cylindrical ingots, which were extruded into bar before being rolled. Some of the ingots were made in 2-in. diameter molds whereas all of the alloys of the previous paper were cast in 4.in. molds. For the larger ingots, the extruded bar was 2 by 0.140 in.; lor the 2-in. ingots, it was I by 0.100 in. Preliminary work indicated that strip rolled from both sizes of the bars would have substantially the same properties. The bar was rolled at some temperature in the range 400' to 800°F., for a total reduction of 50 per cent. The temperature and reduction per pass were so selected that no cold cracking occurred, but were such as to leave the metal in a semihard condition. The hot-rolled metal was annealed at several temperatures in the range 400' to 800°F.; it was also cold-rolled, and given solution and aging treatments. Two standard test bars corresponding to each treatment were pulled in tension, and the average was obtained. Twelve treatments, in all, were given each alloy. The properties of the annealed specimen having the highest percentage of elongation were selected to represent the alloy in the annealed condition. The properties of the cold-rolled specimen having the highest yield strength were selected to represent the alloy in the cold-rolled condition. These properties were then plotted against percentage composition by analysis. Smooth curves were drawn among the points, thus graphically averaging the results over the entire range studied. The percentage of elongation in the cold-rolled state was not plotted, since it was always low, and varied in an irregular manner with composition. THE chief ore of lithium is spodumene, a lithium-aluminum silicate containing up to 3 pct lithium. The preparation of lithium salts from spodumene is costly because of the low concentration of the metal and the difficulty of separating it from the other alkali metals present. Dr. Kroll's and Dr. Schlecten's recent paper' has reviewed various methods proposed for preparation of lithium. It will be seen from this paper that the methods proposed to date have required one or another of the lithium salts as a raw material. The high cost of these salts has been the chief item of expense in the lithium metal produced. This situation has made it interesting to investigate the possibility of producing the metal directly from spodumene. When spodumene is calcined at 1000°C in the presence of lime, lithium oxide is replaced in the ore as is evidenced by the fact that it may be leached from the reaction mixture with water.2 Free energy calculations suggested that lithium oxide might be reduced with aluminum or silicon and the lithium produced distilled from the reaction mixture by heating to about 1000°C in a vacuum. These facts taken together suggested that it might be possible to prepare lithium metal directly from spodumene by heating a mixture of the ore, lime, and a suitable reducing agent in vacuum and distilling off the lithium metal as formed. THE REPLACEMENT OF Li20 IN SPODUMENE A series of experiments were undertaken to determine the ratio of lime to spodumene necessary to free substantially all the lithium oxide present in the ore. The spodumene used in these experiments was supplied by Foote Mineral Co. in the form of powder of about 200 mesh. Analysis of the spodumene was as follows: [ ] Lime (cp -200 mesh) was added in various ratios to spodumene and thoroughly mixed in a ball mill. Two hundred gram samples of spodumene-lime mixtures were charged loosely in fireclay crucibles and held at 1000°C in a gas-fired furnace for 5 hrs. The product in each case was ground to pass 140 mesh and then placed in a thimble in a soxhlet extractor. Extraction with water was carried on for 6 hrs. After this period the extract was reduced in volume by evaporation in order to precipitate dissolved lime and was then filtered and titrated with 1/4 normal hydrochloric acid. After correcting for residual calcium oxide in solution, the alkali present was calculated as lithium oxide. The results of these experiments are shown in Table I and Fig I. At lime-spodumene ratios less than 1.5, the products were invariably fused. At the ratio of 1.5 and above, the product was loosely sintered with little evidence of fusion. "Ferrosilicon (Fe-Si) is an important commercial material and it forms the basis of the powder used in dense medium separation (DMS) of various minerals in a minerals beneficiation process. Current losses of Ferrosilicon (Fe-Si), which is used in the dense medium separation (DMS) of iron ore at Kumba Resources, Sishen, South Africa occur due to adhesion to the separation products and also by being present in the effluent stream, due to abrasion. The losses contribute greatly to the running cost of the plant and the purpose of this project was to determine the characteristics of the unused Fe-Si and then to characterise the changes that occur during storage and the use thereof.A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Mössbauer Spectroscopy (MS) were used to investigate the characteristics of the fresh and used Fe-Si. The SEM analyses of the Fe-Si yielded a composition of 15 wt.% Si and 85 wt.% Fe with minor impurities of Mn and Cr (<1 wt. %), resulting in an ordered phase with a calculated composition of Fe2Si. The average density of the Fe-Si was found to be 7.177 g.cm-3 whilst the size distribution was determined with the d50 of the particles being approximately 30 µm. A slurry, containing 10% solids was prepared, which had a density of about 1.1 g.cm-3 and this slurry was used to conduct the various experiments under laboratory conditions at the university. Samples were taken at regular intervals from a storage container containing a lime solution as well as from a closed circulation circuit system, kept at a constant temperature of about 60°C. Mössbauer Spectroscopy yielded, for the new fresh Fe-Si-samples, a two-sextet spectrum with hyperfine magnetic field strengths of 19.9T and 30.7T respectively, and the yellow-brown froth was found to be akaganeite or ß-FeOOH.It was found that the biggest loss of Fe-Si was due to the abrasion of the particles during the DMS process. A possible change in magnetic properties was also observed, leading to further losses that could occur during prolonged use of the medium. No clear changes to the Fe-Si occurred during correct storage methods, as was initially thought."

The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. Soon after the initiation in Belgium, the process was introduced into England, where subsequent investigation developed similar processes, which were successfully used in

"Pb-based alloys with Pr and Ag were prepared in vacuum electromagnetic induction furnace. The tensile strength, corrosion rate and anodic potential in sulfate solution were measured, and the experimental data were analyzed according to the metallographic phases of alloys, the micromorphology and composition of their oxide films. The results show that, with the addition of Pr, the ultimate tensile strength and corrosion rate of pure lead were increased, and the anodic potential decreased. The extra addition of Ag can improve the properties of alloy further. Comparing with Pb-Ag0.8 alloy which is widely used in zinc electrowinning industry, the ultimate tensile strength of Pb-Ag0.6-Pr2.0 alloy was increased by 31.75%, the anodic potential under 50mA/cm2 was decreased by 30m V.IntroductionIn zinc electrowinning industry, the Pb-Ag (0.5-1.0 wt.%, 0.8wt.% normally) anode is widely used as an insoluble anode['l. It can meet the basic requirements, but still has several problems such as high oxygen evolution over-potential (about 860mV), unsatisfactory corrosion resistance, lead contamination of the cathode product and high consumption of Ag etc.In order to reduce the energy consumption, enhance the corrosion resistance, improve the product quality and reduce the consumption of Ag (or even dispense with it), much research has been done, mainly focusing on Pb-based alloy anodes and Ti-based coated anodes. Detailed investigations have already been carried out on binary alloys (Pb-Ca and Pb-Co), ternary alloys (Pb-Ag-Ca, Pb-Ag-Ti, Pb-Ag-Sn, Pb-Sr-Sn, and Pb-Ca-Sn) and quaternary alloys (Pb-Ca-Sr-Ag, Pb-Ca-Ce-Ag, and Pb-Ag-Sn-Co)[Z-4l, Although these anodes can effectively reduce the consumption of Ag, only the Pb-Co and Pb-Ag-Sn-Co anodes perform well with regard to reducing the anodic potential. However, their complicated manufacturing conditions restrict further commercial use.Besides its application in nonferrous metal electro-winning industry, Pb-based alloy is also used as grid alloy for lead-acid battery, serving as active materials supporter and current collector. In order to enhance the corrosion resistance and deep-cycling performance, reduce the impedance of the corrosion film, the addition of appropriate rare earth elements into anodic grid alloys has become a research focus. Studies proved that RE can enhance the mechanical strength of grids, inhibit the formation of anodic Pb(II) film on the surface of grids and then reduce the impedance of the film[ 10-12l."

A method is presented for predicting the character of gas or water displacement in a radial system, which can be either horizontal or inclined. The latter case would comprise cone-shaped or dome-shaped symmetry. The method conriders the one dimension of radial distance, taken parallel to the bedding planes. Approximate allowance can be made for segregation of the two fluids perpendicular to the bedding planes. A complete saturation history can be obtained in about a day&apos;s time with the use of a desk calculator. Results of an example calculation agree well with the performance of simulated gas drive in a large model representing a section of a cone. This pie-shaped, sand-packed model was 8-ft long and 4-in. thick. The method of solution is useful in handling other partial differential equations of first order and first degree. INTRODUCTION A new analytical method has been developed for predicting the performance of gas or water drive in a reservoir having radial or cone-shaped symmetry (see Fig. 1). In addition, this new development offers a general method of handling partial differential equations of first order and first degree. This work extends those methods developed previously&apos;- "or predicting the displacement of oil by gas or water in linear systems. The method of calculating oil recovery in a radial system involves two major parts. The first part is a calculation of the distribution of saturations at various times of depletion. The second part is the calculation of oil recovery and producing gas-oil or water-oil ratios through volumetric balance on the saturation distributions obtained in the first part. This second part differs only slightly in principle from similar calculations made with linear systems, for instance. The basic assumptions used in the calculations are as follows. 1. One-dimensional radial flow. An approach is explained later for approximating a second vertical dimension. (With- drawals of oil, and of the driving fluid after breakthrough, are assumed uniform around the periphery of the dome.) 2. Constant-volume fluid flow. Thus, in a gas drive there is no change in gas solubility, or in oil or gas volume due to viscous and gravity pressure drops. 3. Capillary forces are negligible. 4. Constant rate of injection. A program has been written for carrying out the calculations needed on a digital computer. However, a prediction can also be arrived at using a desk calculator; this latter method of work requires about a day&apos;s time for each prediction made. CALCULATION OF SATURATION DISTRIBUTION For definiteness, we describe the development of our method for the case of gas drive from the crest of the structure. Reduce or prevent acid mine drainage from coal refuse piles and surface mines by inhibiting the growth of acid-causing bacteria. Approach A dilute surfactant or deter? gent solution is applied directly to coal refuse piles or overburden using a hydro-seeder or road watering truck. The surfactant treatment can be used either as a preventive measure to avoid a potential acid drainage problem or to reduce water treatment costs by controlling acid drainage at its source. How It Works Acid drainage is prevented or reduced by inhibiting the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, a type of bacteria which obtains most of the energy it needs to survive by oxidizing ferrous iron in water. The oxidized iron in turn attacks pyrite, which forms an acid and additional ferrous iron for the bacteria to oxidize. T. ferrooxidans is protected by an outer membrane which enables it to survive in its acid environment. Anionic surfactants, or surfactants containing negatively charged ions, can be used to destroy this membrane, thus killing the bacteria and slowing down the oxidation of acid-forming pyrite. Of the anionic surfactants tested to date, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) appears to be the most effective as a bactericide. Alpha olefin sulfonate and alkyl benzene sulfonate are acceptable alternatives. These surfactants are major components of common household products, such as laundry detergent, shampoo and toothpaste. They are, therefore, readily available, inexpensive, biodegradable and present no environmental problems at low concentrations.

The influence of deoxidation practice, prior thermal history, and aging time and temperature on the strain-aging behavior of low-carbon open-hearth steels was investigated. The criterion of aging employed was the increase in yield strength in the tensile test, after straining and aging. Composition, prior heat treatment, and aging conditions were all found to be important in governing the strain-aging characteristics of these steels. THAT deoxidation changes the strain-aging propensities of low-carbon steels has been known for a long time, but there has been little agreement, and even contradiction, between results obtained by different investigators and between results obtained in the laboratory and in the mill. This investigation was begun in the hope that some of the uncertainties connected with the strain aging of commercial steels could be eliminated. In considering this problem, it was necessary to define strain aging and to examine the methods used to measure this property. Strain aging can be defined as the changes in properties of a metal or alloy with time, after cold working. The rate at which these changes occur increases as the temperature is raised above atmospheric. The requisite plastic strain is the principal distinction between strain aging and quench aging, the latter being due to precipitation from supersaturated solid solution. Strain aging is also characterized by rapid attainment of maximum hardness at high aging temperatures and lack of softening (overaging) at low aging temperatures. Several possible criteria of strain aging have been listed by Sachsl and by Davenport and Bain.&apos; Because changes in mechanical properties are the most easily measured and the most commonly used, consideration of methods to be used in this investigation was confined to three tests: tensile, notch-impact, and hardness. Hardness tests are the most economical and easiest to perform, but produce only one measure of strain aging. Also, as pointed out by Felmly, Hartbower, and Pellini,³ hardness changes due to aging are not pronounced for steels containing more than 0.15 pct C. Notch-impact tests require careful preparation of large numbers of specimens. Above and below the transition temperature the test lacks sensitivity; furthermore, it is extremely difficult to impart a uniform strain to the specimens, followed quickly by aging and final testing; machining must generally take place after straining. For these reasons, the tensile test was selected for use. Although this test requires a considerable expenditure of time, labor, and money in preparation of the specimens and performance of the test, more information can be gained than from any other single mechanical test, information which includes upper and lower yield points, yield-point elongation, tensile strength, strain-hardening exponent, reduction of area, and elongation. Low and Gensamer&apos; and Schwartzbart and Low5 lso used the tensile test, taking the increase in flow stress after straining in tension and aging as a measure of strain aging. In a previous paper! the authors reported on the mechanical properties of a 65 per cent copper, 10 per cent manganese, 25 per cent zinc alloy as compared with, similarly processed cartridge brass. Additional investigations by these laboratories, on higher copper alloys, have demonstrated that at lower zinc concentrations even larger amounts of pure manganese may be added to copper-zinc alloys without exceeding the single-phase solid solution limits, and that similar increases in tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness may be obtained without excessive decreases in ductility. Several compositions in this range showed also a decided color change with increasing manganese. The normal "brassy" color was considerably lightcncd and reduced to a faint yellow cast at 15 per cent manganese. With higher manganese contents the alloys were essentially white and similar in appearance to the nickel-silver alloys. From this work it appeared that it would be desirable to determine more completely the properties of the wrought and annealed white alloys. Accordingly, a more detailed study was planned of an alloy having the composition 70 per cent copper, 20 per cent manganese, and 10 per cent zinc. This alloy remained single-phase throughout the working and annealing cycles of the preliminary tests and appeared to be&apos; about the strongest of the white single-phase alloys. The project included also an investigation of additional alloys, deviating from this composition by 5 per cent of each of the three components to evaluate the effects of variation in composition and a study of the propertics of the central alloy made with silicothermic manganese. Material Preparation Electrolytic manganese, wirebar copper, and electrolytic zinc were used for the preparation of the alloys. Representative analysis of the electrolytic manganese seldom exceeds 0.01 per cent iron, 0.02 per cent sulphur and 0.02 per cent lead, with no silicon or aluminum. A typical sample of the silicothermic manganese metal contained 2 per cent iron, 0.81 per cent silicon, 0.16 per cent carbon, and 0.36 per cent aluminum. Melting and alloying were performed in a high-frequency furnace with magnesia crucibles. Melts were deoxidized with small aluminum additions and cast into 25-lb. slab ingots. Care was exercised in deoxidation to avoid excessive amounts of residual aluminum, which has been found to have significant effects on alloys in this system. Computer Integrated Mining (CIMG) is a process of using computer networks to transform islands of enabling technologies into a highly interconnected mining system. CIMG involves the integration of advanced technologies at various levels in the mine business to achieve higher flexibility, better quality of processes and control, and improved profitability. Justifying the benefits of CIMG are difficult as many of the advantages are derived from improved flexibility, quality, and control. Justification is based on the evaluation of the benefits to be gained, compared to the required capital investment. Management tools used in mining are currently inadequate in assessing the value of advanced technology whose benefits are primarily qualitative. A key aspect of successful implementation is management acceptance, which has to be won through the capability to justify the technology&apos;s financial costs and the true value of all of its benefits. The manufacturing industry faced similar justification difficulties when adopting advanced technology in factories. A significant amount of funding and research was invested into developing management strategies and approaches to justification. Many of the problems that faced the transformation of the manufacturing industry in the late eighties and early nineties are now facing mining. The solutions derived for manufacturing may help mining in its transition to an increased reliance on integration technology. Reviewing the industrial history of computer integrated manufacturing identifies several tools and strategic frameworks that can be adapted for mining. The Mines Operating Co.&apos;s plant at Park City, Utah, was designed to treat the low-grade fillings in the old stopes of the Ontario mine. These fillings carry 6 to 14 oz. of silver, 1 to 2 lb. of copper, 0.01 to 0.015 oz. of gold, and a small percentage of lead and zinc. The treatment consists in mixing the crushed ore with coal dust and salt and then roasting in a new type of furnace by combustion of the contained fuel. The roasted ore is leached with an acid salt solution to dissolve the silver, gold, copper, and lead. At present these metals are precipitated together on scrap iron and the product sold to a refinery. The only new feature of importance in this scheme of treatment is the roasting process, which makes possible the chloridizing of ores without any loss of the valuable metals, and at a very low cost. History of the Development of the Process The roasting process- had its beginning in connection with research work at the Utah State School of Mines. N. C. Christensen, Jr., who held one of the School of Mines&apos; fellowships, was engaged in some experimental work on blast roasting. At the same time I was doing some work on the insoluble gold in Mercur base ores. Mr. Christensen roasted some of this base gold ore in his pot furnace, and found that when he mixed a sufficiently low percentage of fuel with the ore, it did not sinter but roasted to a leachable product. We considered this a new application of blast roasting, and proceeded to test out a large number of ores in several different types of small roasters which we constructed.. This experimental work continued well into the summer of 1911. In August, 1911, the Consolidated Mercur Gold Mines Co. installed a small roaster of our design, which we proposed to operate on the counter-current principle, feeding mixed ore continuously on top, and at the same time drawing off the roasted ore from the bottom.
