The achievement of high availability of the Grey River Gold Mining Limited's alluvial gold dredge is a tortuous task which will rely upon the dedication of all staff employed at Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML). The persistent adoption of new technology and better operating procedures, combined with a strong commitment to preventative and predictive maintenance, is necessary. The Grey River Gold Mining Limited alluvial gold dredge is operating in a relatively low grade alluvial gold deposit and hence relies on a high throughput of ore to be profitable. To achieve the required high material throughput the dredge incorporates an overburden removal system which operates simultaneously with a conventional bucketline system.   The overburden system incorporates a cutter wheel and suction pump configuration which is dedicated to removing the low grade (5 mg gold/m3 gravel) overburden. The bucketline conveys the richer grade payzone gravels (up to 890 mg/m3 gravel) to the recovery plant mounted onboard the dredge. The horizon for the overburden system approximates 15 m and the payzone terminates at the interface of the old man rock and the alluvial gravels at a variable depth averaging 22 m.   From a mechanical engineering perspective the dredge is a machine comprised of two materials handling systems which are controlled by Operations Staff and electronic process control systems.   The availability of such a materials handling system is a function of four variables: 1. The environment that the machine operates in. 2. The ability of the people operating the machine. 3. The design of the mechanisms, the configuration that they are grouped in and the effectiveness of the process control systems which control the mechanisms. 4. The procedures utilised to predict the performance of the machines and the skill of staff to analyse that data and carry out effective maintenance.

Underground and opencast coal mining has been ongoing since 1896 on the Stockton Plateau, West Coast, New Zealand. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) from historic and current mine workings has had an adverse environmental impact on the surrounding aquatic environment. The two main catchments affected by ARD are those of the Mangatini and St Patrick streams. These catchments flow into the Lower Ngakawau River, which holds high amenity value for the local community. Water quality targets set by Solid Energy for 2010 in the Ngakawau River include increased pH and clarity and a decrease in certain dissolved metals.   At-source ARD minimisation options are the first stage in mitigating the effects of mining acid forming rocks and reducing acid loads in the Mangatini and St Patrick stream catchments. ARD minimisation techniques reduce the quantity of acidity generated and thus reduces the treatment required. Treatment will be required for many years at Stockton due to current and historical acid formation. This paper looks at the treatment options that Solid Energy has been investigating including limestone leach beds, engineered wetlands, oxic limestone drains, and limestone dosing of catchment drainage. Particular focus is given to fine limestone dosing of the Mangatini stream and subsequent water quality improvements.

Documented case histories of surface ground movements from mine subsidence were utilized to help determine when the initial collapse of the overburden occurred above longwall panels. By studying this relationship between initial movement at the surface and the amount of face advance, the least-complex conditions exist for empirically assessing the span capacity of the overburden. The objective of this work was to obtain a better understanding of the overburden response to longwall mining. This knowledge will give a better insight on the long-term effects that different overburden types have on the stability and the subsidence potential of room and pillar mines, as well as, the influence of the overburden on subsidence over longwall panels. Theory on the overburden span capacity was developed and correlated to field observations. Data were used on the overburden lithology, depth, width, and face advance of the panel, and the subsidence conditions that were noted on the surface. The subsidence measured on the surface was used to determine when complete failure in the overburden rock had occurred. According to spans predicted by theory and the subsidence measured in the field, the competent lower units failed at a face advance less than when significant subsidence was observed on the surface. In each case studied, there were competent lower beds; however, the full overburden weight was not sustained to the point of subsidence. The best correlation with the surface movement was found with the most shallow, competent bed. Elastic plate solutions with various support conditions were found to best monitor the surface subsidence of these upper roof units.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralisation occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydrothermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz-adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy and sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt per cent NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei and Broadlands. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralisation is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system. The intensely fractured zones containing the gold-silver mineralisation were probably produced by hydraulic fracturing generated by accumulation under pressure of hydrothermal fluid in blind fault zones. Study of fluid inclusions indicates that hydrothermal quartz associated with electrum was deposited under boiling conditions. High grade electrum mineralisation at Graces workings appears to be localised by reaction of hydrothermal fluid with sedimentary marcasite in black shale.

Refractories are unique ceramic materials, which are used in large quantities in steel making furnaces, metal smelting vessels, and glass melting tanks. They are required to possess high thermal shock properties and good slag corrosion resistance as well as creep resistance at high temperatures. Therefore, they are made from very refractory minerals such as lime, periclase, corundum, spinel, and zirconia. Slags are vitreous materials produced as a residue in steel refining processes. They cover a wide range of compositions and may contain pure oxides, silicates, and sulfides as well as fluoride phases depending on the melting and smelting processes. These minerals exhibit spectacular cathodoluminescence color under electron bombardment; therefore, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy is found to be a superior technique for the characterization of refractory corrosion by slags. Examples included in this study are (1) reaction of fluorine containing mold slags with ZrO2-C nozzle refractories promoting crystallization of the Cuspidine, Ca4Si2O7(F,OH)2, (2) corrosion of fusion cast refractories in TV panel glassmaking furnaces and formation of glass defects, and (3) reaction of spinel based castable refractories with copper smelting slags.

The progressive depletion of ore available at shallow depths in several underground mines around the world means that underground mining operations would increasingly be carried out at greater depths and therefore at higher temperatures. However, our understanding of the effect of hot temperatures on the response (mechanical, economical, environmental) of cemented paste backfill (CPB) is still limited. Hence, an extensive laboratory investigation was conducted to study the performance of young and aged CPB, in response to deep mine temperatures. Several CPB samples with different compositions, cured at different temperatures (20 to 50°C) and different times (7 to 160 days) were tested regarding their mechanical properties, economical performance (binder consumption) and microstructural properties. The results show that hot temperatures significantly affect the performance properties of CPB at young and advanced ages. An increase in the curing temperature leads to a considerable improvement of the rate of gain of CPB strength and also to a significant increase of the strength of CPBs studied. CBP samples cured at hot temperatures show lower binder consumption and finer pore structure. Results of this study could serve as background information for the development of optimal mine backfill design procedures.

IntroductionAutogenous or semi-autogenous mills in conjunction with rod or ball mills are used with preference for ore processing. Most ball mills are of closed-circuit design and operate with mechanical classifiers (spiral or rake classifiers) or hydrocyclones. In other words, the ores undergo wet primary grinding, since slurries are required for the downstream separation stages anyway. This paper presents a new grinding system based on high pressure comminution of ores. This grinding process allows:- Energy savings of up to 20 % or more- Capacity increases of up to 100 % and more- Reduction of wear costs- Smaller units for new installation and thus- Reduced investment costsThese advantages are highly interesting for both new installations and conversion projects, particulary in cases where an increasing hardeness of the ore, i.e. rising Bond Work Index, reduces the output of the plants or where the metal assay of the ore decreases and the capacity of the existing systems has to be increased. POLYCOM high-pressure grinding rolls have established themselves with great success already for grinding cement clinker, granulated blast furnace slag, limestone, cement raw materials, coal and other materials.Meanwhile more than 250 high pressure grinding rolls have been installed worldwide. A utilização de carvão vegetal na fabricação do ferro-gusa tem ganhado destaque devido a suas vantagens ambientais em comparação ao coque. A necessidade de suprir a demanda de consumo de carvão vegetal pelas siderurgias faz com que os produtores busquem maior produtividade e qualidade através da busca constante na redução do tempo de produção do carvão. O presente trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de um modelo matemático tri-dimensional transiente, para simulação da secagem, carbonização e resfriamento no interior de um forno retangular de alvenaria. Foi desenvolvido um modelo acoplado baseado na solução das equações de conservação da quantidade de movimento, energia e espécies químicas. As soluções das equações diferenciais que representam os fenômenos são obtidas através da técnica de volumes finitos. Ao longo do processo de carvoejamento, o modelo considera a transferência de massa e calor associada à cinética de reação de cada componente. O modelo é tridimensional e transiente, sendo capaz de prever detalhes dos fenômenos no interior do forno e sua evolução temporal o que possibilita o controle das fases de fabricação do carvão vegetal.

A evolução da microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas de dois aços inoxidáveis duplex foram estudadas via microscopia óptica e de varredura, ensaios de dureza e tração. As amostras dos aços inoxidáveis duplex foram laminadas a frio com percentual de 18,50 e 62% para o aço S32304 e 21,52 e 64% para o aço S31803. As amostras com 62 e 64% de redução foram recozidas a uma temperatura de 1055ºC com 20 s de encharque. Os resultados mostraram o efeito da deformação a frio na espessura das lamelas de ferrita e austenita, sendo este mais pronunciado na austenita. O aço inoxidável duplex S31803 apresentou maiores valores para o limite de escoamento e dureza devido ao maior percentual de molibdênio e nitrogênio, elementos que atuam como endurecedores por solução sólida.

Os aços avançados de alta resistência (Advanced High Strength Steels - AHSS) vêm sendo uma solução atrativa na construção de estruturas automotivas mais leves e seguras, pois combinam alta resistência e boa conformabilidade. Neste trabalho, foram realizadas simulações numéricas e experimentos em escala industrial, com aços fornecidos pela Usiminas, da estampagem de uma travessa dianteira de suspensão automotiva. O objetivo desses experimentos foi avaliar a estampabilidade deste componente, que atualmente é fabricado com o aço de alta resistência baixa liga (HSLA340, 2,0 mm), quando substituído pelos aços Dual Phase (DP600, 1,6 e 1,8 mm) e Transformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP700, 1,6 mm). As simulações numéricas reproduziram o padrão de deformação destes materiais durante os processos de conformação e o perfil geométrico do componente. A travessa de suspensão automotiva foi estampada com sucesso com os AHSS propostos.

There have been steady improvements in drilling technology, explosive products, methods of initiation and integration of the two techniques but the essential cyclical nature of drill-and-blast rock excavation naturally limits continuous improvements in cost and productivity. Dynamite and safety fuses, compressed-airdriven tools, and most of the crushing and grinding machinery in use today were all developed before 1900. Moreover, virtually every mechanized mining system used today was in use by the late 1950’s.

The Fe(II) regeneration process is an important aspect of Alternate Anode Reaction Technology (AART) for copper electrowinning (EW). In AART, Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) at the anode during EW, and it must be regenerated to maintain recyclable electrolytes. Regeneration is achieved via Fe(III) reduction by SO2(aq), and the reaction is catalyzed by activated carbon particles. To better understand this process, a kinetic model was developed and experimentally validated for the Fe(II) regeneration in the current work. The investigation focused on the primary reaction mechanism and the reaction rate dependence on four variables: carbon particle size, flow rate, initial Fe(III) concentration and initial SO2 concentration. The Fe(II) regeneration reaction is mass-transfer controlled in the presence of activated carbon. Carbon particle size and initial Fe(III) are the most influential factors under the conditions tested. Initial SO2 concentration is insignificant to the reaction rate.

Defining the Risks The bad news is peak commodities, energy and economic crisis and stock markets collapsing are the issues that are already hitting everyone?s bottom line and draining the treasuries of every mining company around the world. Higher energy costs are affecting the bottom line more than ever before, which is creating more risk for companies. Mining companies have major land positions around the world and they have major energy needs. Uncontrollable increases in energy costs, increased regulations for diesel fuel emissions and energy intermittencies are costing mining companies more time, money, and man-power, which are cutting into profits and hitting the balance sheet. The good news is, there are practical energy solutions which are off the grid, tried and true methods which can be implemented in a cost-effective manner and will increase profitability and save shareholder values as well as energy security for these companies and their projects. To date, most of the mining resource industry has not yet considered or used other forms of power like clean, sustainable, or alternative energy for their own energy needs. The reasons have primarily been pushback from the mining industry due to beliefs of older technologies in alternative energy, a lack of understanding of the cost advantages long term, and perceptions of environmental relativity.

Springvale Mine is an underground coal mine in the western coalfield of New South Wales which utilises retreat longwall mining technique. The mine encountered significant gateroad floor heave issues during retreat of LW415. Floor heave has subsequently impeded longwall advance as well as longwall bolt up and recovery to some extent during the extraction of the next five longwalls. Floor heave at Springvale Mine develops throughout the lifecycle of the mine roadways, and is most prevalent in longwall gateroads. Floor heave has been measured as early as 2 weeks after roadway development and continues to develop through the post-development phase, with a rapid increase in close proximity to the longwall face. This paper presents a case study of the evolution of understanding of floor heave behaviour at Springvale Mine based on geotechnical characterisation, an intensive convergence monitoring program (roof and floor movement) and spatial correlation of monitored locations with longwall face position. The analysis considers previously known factors contributing to floor heave including mining depth, geological and physical properties of the rock mass and mine design geometry. Investigation results indicate a strong correlation between floor heave magnitude and roof dilation magnitude, geophysically inferred faulting in underlying strata, areas of localised stress concentration and mine roadway dimensions. This paper also discusses the predictive model which was developed as a result of the study, which is now the basis of the floor heave removal program used to manage roadway convergence at the mine. "The McClean Lake Mill is located approximately 700 kilometres north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and is operated by AREVA Resources Canada Inc. (AREVA). The mill was designed to process high grade uranium ores, and has been undergoing a multiyear expansion to increase its production capacity to 24 Mlbs U3O8 per annum, while also undergoing upgrades to allow it to safely transition to processing high grade ores from the Cigar Lake Mine. During the metallurgical test work on the Cigar Lake ores, it was identified that some ore zones in the Cigar Lake deposit have a propensity to generate hydrogen gas during acid leaching. Hydrogen is a volatile and explosive gas, which poses obvious safety concerns in the leaching circuit. Uranium processing is further complicated by the fact that an oxidant in the form of oxygen gas or hydrogen peroxide is required to regenerate iron in the leach, which further increases the risk from hydrogen gas. During 2013 Hatch and AREVA designed and engineered a number of novel upgrades for the leaching circuit to mitigate the risk of hydrogen gas evolution in the process. Best in class technology was utilized in addition to control and operating strategy changes to ensure the leaching circuit can be safely operated with ores that can evolve hydrogen gas. This paper reviews the design concepts and modifications implemented on this unique and challenging project.INTRODUCTION The McClean Lake mill was originally designed to process high grade uranium ores, however until 2014 the average ore grade processed was 1%. The facility has been undergoing a multiyear upgrade and expansion to increase its production capacity from 12 to 24 Mlbs U3O8 per annum, while also undergoing upgrades to allow it to safely transition to new high grade ores, averaging 18% U, from the Cigar Lake Mine. During the last round of metallurgical test work on the Cigar Lake ores, it was identified that some ore zones in the Cigar Lake deposit had a higher propensity to generate hydrogen gas during acid leaching than previous test work had indicated. 316 L Stainless Steel samples were solidified directionally under conditions which produced the columnar to equiaxed transition. The position of the transition was located in each sample and the distance from the bottom of the ingot was measured. During solidification the distribution of temperatures were measured by means of thermocouples located strategically. From the measured temperatures the following parameters were derived; the local temperature gradient, the cooling rate and the velocities of the liquid and solidus fronts. Comparing the location of the transition and the values of these parameters it was found that the temperature gradient reaches negative values of as low as -13.44 "C/cm, and velocities of the fronts of around 0.1 cm/s. Also, a supercooling of 5.81°C were measured which was associated with the supercooling for the nucleation and growth of the equiaxed grains ahead of the columnar front. In addition the primary and secondary dendritic spacing was measured in both regions. The spacing was compared with the predictions from available models. The results are presented and discussed in the frame of the results obtained for other alloys

"Mineworkers are routinely tasked with making critically important decisions about whether or not a hazard presents an imminent danger. Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health collected formative data to investigate mine safety professional perspectives on workplace examinations, which revealed a potential gap in how mineworkers are assessing risk. During interviews, participants revealed not having a systematic methodology for mineworkers to use to determine if a hazard is considered imminent danger. In this paper, we identify and describe three distinct categories of imminent danger complexity and discuss potential steps that could lead to improved identification of imminent danger situations. Finally, we identify potential practices to incorporate into risk management efforts, including feedback, communication and specialized training, to increase awareness of imminent danger situations. IntroductionIn recent years, the metal and nonmetal mining sector, as categorized by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), experienced an increase in the number of fatalities occurring at mine sites. From 2013 to 2015, 69 mineworkers were fatally injured, twice the number of fatalities in each of the previous two years (MSHA, 2015a). As a way to address this increase, MSHA issued its P15- IV-01 program policy letter, suggesting that “miners would benefit from rigorous workplace examinations conducted by experienced and trained examiners” (MSHA, 2015b). The goal of these examinations is to find hazards in the field and mitigate them before they cause injury or death to mineworkers. While it is important to identify all hazards in the workplace, it is critically important to identify those hazards that are considered imminent danger because they require an immediate response to avoid a severe or even fatal injury."

In 1963, the full-scale engineering study for the development of an iron, steel, and vanadium plant was initiated. This was the birth of Evraz Highveld and its process flow as it is known today. Highveld started out as a steelworks that produced steel and vanadium-bearing slag from a titaniferous magnetite iron ore mined from its own mine site near Steelpoort. The process utilized co-current rotary kilns for prereduction, and submerged-arc furnaces for the production of pig iron with approximately 1.15% vanadium. Because of various technical challenges that the submerged-arc furnaces experienced over the years, a decision was taken in 2004 to convert the furnaces to open slag bath (OSB) operation, in order to enable the maximum production of iron and vanadium while improving the control over operational parameters. The conversion proved to be highly successful and, since 2005, three furnaces have been converted to OSB operation. The fourth furnace will be converted in the first half of 2011. The conversion to OSB furnaces not only yields higher vanadium recovery to the metal at the iron plant, but also improves the overall throughput of the steel plant. This is the result of the higher carbon content of the liquid iron from the OSB furnaces, eliminating the need for anthracite addition to the shaking ladle process. This reduces the blowing time by approximately 60%. The conversion of the furnaces to OSB configuration is seen as an enabling technology change and a prerequisite to the implementation of other plant improvements that are envisaged. The long-term vision of EHSV is to convert five furnaces to OSB mode, and permanently decommission the two remaining submerged-arc furnaces. This will allow EHSV to maintain current steel and vanadium production but at a significantly improved overall efficiency.

In this work, preheating and roasting tests of pellets made from blends of Western Australia ultra-fine (WAU) magnetite concentrate and Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or Brazilian hematite concentrate were carried out. The results showed that pellets made from 100 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate possesses inferior preheating and roasting performance when preheating at 1050°C for 20 minutes and roasting at 1300°C for 40 minutes, the compressive strength of preheated and fired pellets is 502 N/pellet and 2313 N/pellet, respectively. When 40 per cent Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or 20 per cent Brazilian hematite concentrate was blended with 60 per cent or 80 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate, the appropriate preheating temperature of the pellets are reduced from 1050°C to 950°C and 975°C, and also the firing temperature of two types pellets are decreased from 1300°C to 1250°C and 1280°C respectively. Moreover, the compressive strength of fired pellets is obviously improved up to 2746 N/pellet and 2630 N/pellet respectively. Microstructure analysis of the fired pellets made from 100 per cent WAU shows its poor growth of Fe2O3 grains, low interlinkage degree of hematite grains, small size of crystallised grains and high porosity of pellet; however, the fired pellets that blended with domestic magnetite concentrate or with Brazilian hematite concentrate have fully growth of Fe2O3 grains, closer interlinkage of hematite grains, lower porosity and stronger consolidation.
