For nearly 100 years, the flotation plant metallurgist has often wondered what is happening æbeneath the frothÆ. To assist in unravelling this mystery, new technology has been developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project, to measure gas dispersion characteristics (such as gas hold-up, superficial gas velocity and bubble size) in industrial flotation cells. These measurements have been conducted in a large number of cells of different types and sizes by researchers from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and JKTech. A large database has been developed and the contents of this database are described in this paper. Typical cell characterisation measurements show a wide spread in values, even in the same cell types and sizes performing similar duties. In conventional flotation cells, the typical gas hold-up values range from 3 - 20 per cent, bubble sizes range between 1 and 2 mm, and superficial gas velocity ranges from 1 to 2.5 cm/s. The ranges of cell characterisation measurements given in this paper will enable plant personnel to compare their operation to other similar types of operations from around Australia and the rest of the world, giving opportunities for further improvement to flotation plant operations.

DURING colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still func-tioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned pros-pects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter.

In many comminution circuits based on SAG mills, an operating cost penalty is incurred in terms of high unit power consumption. By the addition of a crusher to the circuit, to crush part of the so­called critical size fraction extracted from the mill charge, the power efficiency of the circuit can be significantly improved. Dominion Mining has now incorporated pebble crushing into three of its comminution circuits. The improvements in circuit performance have in all cases been significant, and in some cases dramatic.

The Industrialization of a country depends on its mining activities to a great extent. In mineral production, India has a top rank not only in South Asia, at the global level too. Quantum of mineral production is almost directly proportional to the quantum of explosive production. Mining sector consume more than 80% of country’s explosive production. Due to rapid growth of mining activities in the country, the explosives industry has been developing very fast in terms of quantity, quality and types. , In this paper, India’s post independent chronological date regarding use of explosives, their types, their constraints and a profile of well-known manufacturers has been meticulously presented. A production figure for three years with system analysis has been presented. The paper also deals with present consumption pattern while making a futuristic forecast. In view of the anticipated changes that are to take place in mining industries in near future, the manufacturers of explosives have to pay a vital role. The paper highlights some concrete and valuable suggestions and recommendations. Small scale Companies have to limit their production to Slurry and Emulsion types of Cartridged explosives whereas the large manufacturing units have to concentrate on Bulk explosives, specialized explosives and better initiating systems. The large manufacturing units have also to make all concerted efforts to compete with global market for significant export. The Country for its rapid growth needs basic raw materials like Coal, Iron Ore and Limestone. So, the extraction of these minerals is of prime importance. The more we produce and consume, the more will be Industrialization. The Industrial growth rate has been around 6% during the last few years. As the Industrial growth rate is moderate, there is moderate increase in mineral extraction in the Country. Additional mineral extraction demands additional explosive production (Annexure-1).

The paper describes the preparation of new rail guides, removing existing rails, and replacing with new rails in a vertical winding shaft.INTRODUCTIONThe general practice in coal winding shafts is the use of two cages, with one or more decks in which men and materials are raised or lowered. Winding speeds vary according to depth, the type of winding gear, and whether winding is done in downcast or upcast shafts. Each cage occupies a position between the centre and side of the shaft, with a clearance depending on the type of guides used. The function of the guides is to keep the cage in position throughout the entire depth of the shaft. There are three types of guides, two of which are in general use.1. Selected wood of about 6 in. square section, fixed to the side of buntons.2. Solid strand steel made up similarly to that of an ordinary wire rope, suspended from the head frame with weights attached to the lower end.3. Standard T-rail sections fixed to end or side buntons. Of the three types, 2 and 3 are in general use. Based on underground observations made in .the coal mines of the Dominion Coal Company Ltd., this paper deals with the stress phenomena in the approach roads and headways and in the gob areas associated with the longwall method of total extraction. The deformation of roadways during development and the deformation of roadways during the total extraction period is delineated and presented in graphical form .. Conclusions are made as to the feasibility of the introduction of the retreat method of longwall extraction in one of the colhenes. The importance of future studies are enumerated, especially. those pertaining to the determination .of the opti.m.um sizes of protective pillars and to increasing the efficiency of the current methods of artificial roadway support.

"1. BENTONITE: THE CRUCIAL CONSTITUENT OF SLURRYSuspensions of bentonite and water are used in a variety of applications in underground engineering. For the construction of underground elements like slurry walls or piles, bentonite slurries offer support to the excavation of loose soils and counter pressure against hydrostatic pressure of ground water, especially where soil permeability is high. In addition, for the construction of tunnels by the slurry-shield method or when hydromills are used for excavation, bentonite suspensions transfer the loosened soil to the surface. In applications like pipe jacking and microtunneling, or where high revolution drilling is required, bentonite also provides lubrication and cooling.To fulfill these functions, the properties of a bentonite slurry need to remain stable, or at least predictable, during the course of construction. Unfortunately, when a suspension mixes with earth, ground water and/or impurities, its properties may be compromised resulting to reduced performance, which would in turn lead to increased construction costs and the risk of the excavation collapsing. Our experience in the lab and onsite is presented herewith.2. MOST USUAL FACTORS OF PERFORMANCE FAILUREWater and soil quality are important factors defining the behavior of suspensions. In an extensive program of measurements in our technical laboratory, the effect of frequently encountered harmful substances on bentonite suspensions has been examined and the results are summarised in Table 1.Some tests show that the conductivity of water has a direct relationship with Marsh Viscosity. For example, we have seen that if the quantity of bentonite required to achieve a 40s Marsh Time ranges between 50-52 kg/m3 at water conductivity below 100 µS/cm; when conductivity is increased to 1,400 µS/cm, we need 65-68 kg/m3 in order to achieve the same property."

A case history is presented of a landslide that occurred adjacent to a highway in the valley of the North Saskatchewan River, about 12 miles upstream of Edmonton, Alberta. The slide took place in the late fall of 1965 following excavations associated with highway improvements that deepened the slope and cut it back to 20º. The slide occurred in the Upper Cretaceous Edmonton Formation. Till covers the bedrock at the location. The bedrock consists of interbedded mudstone, claystone, and sandstone with layers of bentonite and coal. The field investigation consisted of a series of pits at the toe of the slide and seven boreholes around it. Undisturbed samples were taken with a Pitcher Sampler and piezometers were installed at various depths in the section. The slide had taken place on a horizontal bentonitic clay layer and it crossed softened mudstone in the back slope. Three piezometric levels were detected but no water pressures were found along the horizontal portion of the slip surface because it was in contact with a free-draining coal layer. Borehole evidence revealed that the bentonitic clay layer was sheared in place beyond the confines of the slide zone. Although this slide was a first-time occurrence, it was part of a much larger slide block that moved presumably when the valley was being formed. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the shear strength parameters of the bentonitic clay and the back slope material. These parameters together with the observed water pressure distribution in the slide area gave a factor of safety of 1.01 in a non-circular limiting equilibrium analysis. The case history is particularly instructive in indicating the care that must be taken to obtain representative information for stability analysis when geological and groundwater conditions are non-uniform. GENERAL INTRODUCTION The object of this paper is to discuss those aspects of open pit mine design which are affected by geotechnical factors. The temptation exists for some practitioners of geotechnical engineering to believe that this relatively new engineering discipline is the ‘be all and end all of mining.’ In the opinion of the authors, this is fallacious but, as our ability to put numbers to the behaviour of rocks and soils improves, it is clear that geotechnical engineering will become an integral and important part of designing and operationg mines success- fully. Open pit mines in the context of this paper also includes open cast mines, where the 'ore" is extracted and the waste material is immediately replaced or ' backfilled in the mined portion of the pit. Open pit mines operating today move from very small tonnages a day to in excess of 400,000 tons per day. Several mines are operating and are being designed to capital expenditure for such projects in some cases exceeds five hundred million dollars and in a few cases will exceed one billion dollars. The size of this investment means that financing will have to be provided from banks or joint partnerships. This financial environment means that planning will be carefully scrutinized by experienced representatives of financial institutions or other mining companies. All too often a project has been put in jeopardy because the personal desire of one or two men to make a project proceed has caused incomplete planning or perhaps in some instances deliberately leading observers 'down the garden path.’ In our opinion the day is rapidly arriving when the quality, logic, practicability and completeness of the planning will make the difference between securing financing or not and, in the cases of existing open pit mines, of the difference between survival and closure.

The reduction of the lead content in the separator fraction produced during the mechanical processing of spent lead-acid batteries is an important environmental and economical issues. The reduction of lead down to less than 1 percent is very difficult using hydroseparators that are common in battery recycling facilities. Very promising results were achieved performing experiments on a test rig using a new technology in battery treatment: a discharge-type jigging unit. The materials is fed onto the jigging bed and transported through the machine. Due to the intensive movement of the feed, an additional washing effect is also obtained in addition to separation of the lead and plastic fractions. The knowledge gained from this development work at UVR-FIA GmbH in Freiberg, Germany, led to a patent application. This paper focuses on the results of the development work and the start-up and one year's operation of the industrial-scale application at Harz-Metall GmbH in Goslar, Gennany.

The pottery department has been aptly described as the "heart of the zinc plant," md every operator of a horizontal-retort plant is acquainted with the fact that good retort practice is the keystone of the smelting process. Since retorts and condensers are clay products, it is obvious that improvements in other branches of the ceramic industry should be observed for possible adoption in the pottery process for zinc smelting. Deaeration of clay bodies is one of the improvements that have become fully, established in many brick and pottery plants. Our investigation of a number of these installations always yielded the same answer—improved practice. Improvement in workability, elimination of laminations, less porosity, greater wet and dry strength, were among the claims put forth for this process. All of these features are exceedingly desirable characteristics in the manufacture of a zinc retort. A preliminary test, which involved truck transportation of deaired slugs over a relatively long distance, did show the value of many of these characteristics in forming the retort. Results from the standpoint of , longer retort life in the smelting furnace were not outstanding. The idea lay dormant for several years but was revived again in 1940, when it was decided to make whatever changes were necessary in the equipment for pottery manufacture to fully demonstrate the process. A number of the manu- facturers of machinery for clay work were asked to submit proposals, and the plan finally adopted was extremely simple and economical. Machine FOR DeaeRRATING Selection of the ''Straight-line'' principle for conversion of the "Wettengel" pug mill to a ''vacuum-extrusion" machine preserved some usable parts of the original equipment, such as the drive mechanism, and main shaft. The converted machine consists of a feed hopper, a compression and shredding zone, a vacuum chamber, and an extrusion barrel, as shown in Fig. I. In operation the clay mix travels from the feed hopper into the compression zone, where it is compressed and finally forced around the tapered cone into the vacuum chamber. As it enters this chamber the clay body is shredded into thin plates, for exFosure to the vacuum. The shredder consists of a hub mounted on the main shaft, to which are bolted segmental sections, each of which carries shredder knives. The compression zone and extrusion barrel function as seals for the vacuum chamber and the shredded clay mix is agitated thoroughly during its exposure to the vacuum. A vacuum pump, equipped with a 3-hp. motor, is attached to this chamber, and maintains 25 to 26 in. vacuum during operation of the mill. Although natural gas was first discovered in Northwest Arkansas in 1887, . near Fort Smith, Sebastian County, the literature contains very little information on the region, which is separated distinctly from the oil area of Southern Arkansas. For that reason this brief and concise report is a summary of developments from discovery to the present time. Northwest Arkansas produced 5,736,-ooo,ooo cu. ft. of natural gas during 1942, the trend of production having been generally upward over the past five years, as is shown in Fig. I. Since 1904 a reserve of 237 billion cubic feet of natural gas has been discovered in Northwest Arkansas, of which approximately 162 billion cubic feet have been expended, leaving a reserve of approximately 75 billion cubic feet available as of Jan. 1, 1943. A prolific new field discovered in Pope County Oct. 23, 1942, will add to the reserve of the region materially. Per well reserves, over-all, are unusually high because of the practice of multiple completion. As yet no commercial deposits of oil have been discovered in Northwest Arkansas. but the gas deposits have proved of immense value industrially, principally in the processing of zinc ore mined in the local area as well as that imported from distant states. With the war, new interest in the exploitation of the metallic ores of the region lends new significance to the gas reserves tabulated herein. Geological Discussion The region covered in this report comprises the Arkansas Valley from Pope County weslward to the Arkansas-Oklahoma state line as shown in Fig. 2. This valley is a westward trending structural trough with sharp-topped ridges and mesa-like mountains rising above the valley's undulating surface. It is bounded on the north by the Ozark Highlands and on the south by the Ouachita Mountains. The sedimentary beds of the Arkansas Valley are composed mainly of noniossil-iferous shales and sandstones. The rocks contain a high content of carbonaceous material and many coal beds are found in the region. The Gxed carbon ratios (ratio of fixed carbon to volatile combustible matter of surface coals) are very high and average about 80 per cent over the region covered in this report. Little or no calcareous material is present. Rocks of the Arkansas Valley are sharply folded, and igneous intrusive rocks cut the sedimentary beds at a few places. The Arkansas Geological Survey' made a detailed reconnaissance survey of the Arkansas Valley province in 1927, the purpose being to delineate the major structural features (Fig. 3) and to point out the possibilities of discovering addi. tional gas deposits. Metal production has traditionally been a cyclical industry. 1977 in the base metals industry has highlighted that fact with a steady decline in the market place for base metals. Corporate aggregate planning is based on good forecasting and when changing conditions make that forecasting inaccurate, alternate analysis of schedules must be accomplished quickly. The computer is the only medium powerful enough to answer management's questions within an acceptable time frame. Worldwide communications networks now make it possible for the many multinational mining companies to arrive at coordinated corporate production plans based on similar basic data from several producing divisions. The Ontario Div. of Inco Metals Co., a unit of Inco Ltd., encompassed during 1977 14 producing mines, 2 nonproducing mines, 1 nonproducing open pit, 5 flotation mills, I smelter, 2 nickel refineries, 1 copper refinery, and an iron ore recovery plant. Several new mines are under development. Mine production approximates 63 500 tpd (70,000 stpd) from some 1000 workplaces. The need for longrange mine planning and scheduling is obvious and until recently has been satisfied by manual methods. However, while manual methods are often quite practical for a small number of mines, or for mines with relatively short lives, or for mines with only one mining method, the situation in the Ontario Div. is too complex and long-term to allow effective, timely planning by such methods. In 1967, a year after the first computer was installed in the division, work was begun on the computerization of the more than 30,000 borehole logs kept in the mines exploration files with a view to speeding up the assessment of mineral resources. Also in 1967 one of the first substantial systems developed on the main business systems computer was the monthly scheduling of development and production for all mines. This system encompassed tons productions per workplace, feet development per workplace, auxiliary and service activities and the requisite labor for each of these. These two dates are mentioned to show that concurrently with the acquisition of computers in the division there was an early understanding of the importance of automating mine scheduling and planning and of the potential for effective and useful computerization of such activities. In 1970, a pilot program was developed in one of the mines containing a large number of workplaces (350) to schedule the production on a network basis. Varying degrees of interest were shown by the individual mine engineers based on the complexity of the production planning problem at each mine. In an evolutionary process, mines were added to the system as its value became obvious in terms of time saving, flexibility, and accuracy. In 1975, the central mine engineering department decided that the system should be extended to all mines so that a complete division-wide long-range scheduling system would be available upon which to base development and production planning. This system would use basic ore data, allow the addition of scheduling commands, and calculate a schedule for the life of the mine. Many reports could be produced for each mine and all-mine summaries would also be available. The significance of the system can be stated in one phrase-speed, accuracy, and flexibility. Whereas in the past a long-range all mines schedule might have been done once a year, taking from two to three months, now it can be done in a day. The chief mines engineer can incorporate changes in input data and external constraints and call for a "new look" at the long-range schedule to assist him and mines production management in their decision-making processes. Using previous manual methods this could not be done quickly enough to be useful.

One hundred ninety nine beach face sand samples from an equal number of beaches from the Mexican Pacific were studied. Based on petrological and chemical analysis some locations have been studied in more detail. Black sands from the following areas are discussed: (1) west Baja California Peninsula, where black sands rich in magnetite and ilmenite have maximum values of 50% iron and 14% titanium in the very fine sand fraction; (2) east Gulf of California, in its northern portion, the black sands show maximum values of 43% iron and 5% titanium in the fraction 2 to 4 0;-(3) the south Mexican Pacific, characterized mainly by medium sands, moderately well sorted, show that the fine sand fractions reach values of 35% iron and 41% titanium. X-ray fluorescence applied on selected samples constituted by feldsarenites and lithic feldsarenties, showed the presence of rare elements in some of the studied samples.

The advent of Nuclear Energy has caused a phenomenal growth in the uranium mining industry. To keep abreast of this surge the mining industry has located many ore bodies, determined the best types of mining adaptable to this particular type of ore and developed a highly specialized type of operation. But, has the mining industry gone far enough in the planning? Has ?built-in? safety been included in the efficient methods of operation? Preplanning safety in the mining industry, as in all industries, takes engineering and ingenuity combined with the experience and cooperation of all concerned. A system of mining can be planned on a map and it will look good. However, when the actual mining takes place, conditions may be such that deviations from the original plans may be required because of excessive water faults or other conditions encountered. With safety we may also be required to change, to conform to the characteristics of a particular operation. People in the mining industry are well aware that loose back has killed miners each year. This condition occurred in practically all types of mines. The condition is not new to us. It is also known that explosives, haulage, machinery and conditions common to all types of mining have taken a heavy toll of human life in mining. In addition to these hazards in the uranium mines, the hazard of radon is also present, Radon is a radioactive gas liberated from ores containing radium. This gas is released into the active workings by the blasting or breaking up of the ore. Sometimes it is caused by radium contaminated water seepage from abandoned workings or from the ore body itself. Until the action of this gas on the human was known, many miners were affected. Un- less adequate precuations are taken to protect the people in these mines,, they may be exposed to this hazard, Health researchers made a study of this substance to determine how it would affect the health of the men, They also studied men who had worked in previous years, in mines known to have contained radioactive materials. All of this research contributed to the present knowledge of radon and its daughter products. It is not flammable nor explosive, but, if allowed to enter the body through the respiratory organs it can cause serious damage. Mines have been operated in the past and are still being operated, which were known to contain explosive and noxious gases, indicating that this problem can be controlled. Several states have instituted laws that make it mandatory to provide adequate ventilation and use of monitoring devices to limit radon and its daughter products to a maximum of 300 micro-microcuries per liter of air. This is considered a safe limit for sustained periods of human exposure. While the findings of research do not prove conclusively that the inhalation of excessive radon or its daugher products cause lung cancer, indications point to this as a possibility, particularly radium A and radium C1 of the daughter products. The threshold limits set by law in most uranium producing states are believed to be safe. In a few years, when tests and data now in the process of collection by interested state officials and laboratories is complete, these limits may be found to be ready for revision. Studies such as these take time. At present, the limits that are used are based upon estimates. The permissible limits of exposure to radon and daughter products include a large safety factor. It is considered that a good supply of fresh air delivered to the working places, adequate dust control, the sealing of unused or abandoned workings, the removal of mine water which is generally contaminated and a safe waiting period after blasting, will hold to a minimum the dangers from this source. There are, of course, problems accompanying each of these procedures. For example, the ventilating of untimbered raises and bringing fresh, uncontaminated air to the working places may be a problem. However, a good mining man can solve these problems as they apply in each particular operation. From the information available at the present time, the daughter products containing polonium and emitting alpha radiation, may be a health hazard. Fortunately, the half life of most of the daughter products is short, however, radium D has a half life of 22 years and presents a problem of contamination in the storage of old tailings. So we can see that failure to comply with the accepted good mining practices may have harmful effects on the health of miners. It is gratifying to note the interest in this potential hazard by the officials in the uranium ore producing states, who are making extensive studies and keeping records of the men who work in this type of mining. This all provide information necessary for preplanning safety. By contrast, little has been accomplished to control the injuries and deaths from some other factors connected with most underground mining operations. "The results of a chemical and mineralogical study of eighteen opaque-oxide occurrences are discussed and the detailed chemical, metallurgical and mining feasibility study of a vanadium-rich magnetite deposit is summarized. A plot of the mol-percentages in the system FeO- Fe2O 3-TiO2 indicates that the deposits fall into two distinct groups: some contain hematite with ilmenite, and some others have magnetite with ilmenite (titaniferous magnetites). The plot also suggests that the two types of deposits were crystallized from liquids of different compositions. Each group has its distinct structural features. Vanadium is present in all of the studied specimens, however concentrations of economic importance have so far been found only in the titaniferous magnetite deposits. The vanadium content of the oxide concentrations of the Dore Lake Complex is the largest among the studied occurrences. Analyses of the concentrates of the drill-core sections show a compositional variation across the orebody; a continuous increase in the tenor of Ti02 and a decrease in the vanadium content upward in the layered sequence is found. Concentration tests on several tons of samples indicate that about 80 per cent of the vanadium is recovered in the magnetite concentrate."

METALLURGISTS have used borax as a fluxing agent traditionally, but until recently elemental boron has played an insignificant role as an alloying element. Neither the metal nor its compounds have been regarded as important metallurgical materials and there is a surprising lack of knowledge concerning their metallurgical behavior. The new applications to steelmaking of both boron and borates, which arose in part from wartime incentives and restrictions, have been seriously handicapped by this lack of data. For example, rasorite, a naturally occurring sodium borate, has been shown to be an effective substitute for aluminum as a ladle deoxidizer in rimming steels.1 Likewise, the effectiveness of boron as an alloying agent has been demonstrated, 2,3 giving deep hardening when used in restricted amounts. The exploitation of both of these uses has been retarded by the difficulty of attaining suitable metallurgical control. Recognizing that the most important information required was a knowledge of the equilibrium between boron and oxygen dissolved in liquid iron, Gurry4 calculated this relation from the best thermal data available. However, estimates of the entropy of melting of boron, the activity coefficient of boron in liquid iron and the activity coefficient of B203 in slag were involved, and experimental work on this problem was obviously desirable. The experiments to be described were planned to establish the boron-oxygen relations in liquid iron and to demonstrate at the same time the ferroborate slag compositions in equilibrium with various amounts of oxygen in liquid iron. Accordingly, slags containing varying proportions of iron and boron oxides were held in contact with molten iron, and samples of both slag and metal were analyzed. The limitations upon the accuracy of the data will be considered, but in a practical sense the oxygen levels that can be attained in iron by iron borate slags, and the amounts of boron in iron at these oxygen levels were established. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE No entirely suitable refractory was found for the mixtures of iron oxide and boron oxide used as slags. Crucibles of silica, magnesia, Ramix, beryllia, and zirconia were all tried unsuccessfully. The most satisfactory method discovered for handling them was the rotating-crucible technique, which creates a parabolic crucible of liquid iron 5,6 Even this was not entirely successful, for at steelmaking temperatures (1600°C.) the slags had such a low surface tension that they crept up to the refractory and slowly dissolved it. During 1936 the Russian oil industry made very satisfactory progress and, while not all difficulties of organization have been ironed out, the country is now assured of a supply of petroleum products in sufficient quantities and of quality demanded by modern motor equipment. The year 1937 promises to better by a wide margin the good showing of 1936. The statistics given in this paper for the first time take into consideration the varying gravities of crude oils of the several Russian oil fields instead of using a flat conversion factor of 7 bbl. per metric ton. It was found from the detailed study that the generally used average conversion factor should be increased from 7 to 7.25 bbl. per metric ton, the figure varying, of course, with the gravity of oil in the individual fields. Crude-oil production during 1936 is estimated at 201,500,000 bbl. as compared with 182,970,000 bbl. produced in 1935, an increase of 9.4 per cent. The greatest increase was again recorded in the Baku district, which increased its production by 10.9 per cent, from 141,257,000 bbl. in 1935 to 158,300,000 in 1936. Grozny district maintained its production at a level of about 23,000,000 bbl., but its old fields continued to decline and production was sustained by the development of newer fields. A great advance was made in drilling speeds and the total footage in 1936 reached 6,694,200 ft. as compared with 4,926,600 ft. drilled in 1935, an increase of 26.4 per cent. In older deep fields, producers were being completed at over 8000 ft.—a great depth for Russian drillers but two years ago. Several major discoveries were made in 1936. Northeast Caucasus.—Izberbash, east from Grozny and on the Caspian Sea, was the outstanding discovery, the initial production of the discovery well being around 3000 bbl. per day from about 5000 ft. The importance of the field is due to the large area of the structure, half of which, however, is under the sea, and also to its strategic location on the shores of the Caspian and near a trunk pipe line to the Grozny refining center. An active development program is being pursued in Izberbash and its 1937 production quota is set at 7,500,000 bbl. URANIUM ore was first discovered in the Edge-mont district of the southern Black Hills in the summer of 1951. The discovery was not made known for some time, but after the news leaked out prospecting became intense, and several hundred claims were staked in the spring of 1952. The Hot Springs Sub Office of the Atomic Energy Commission was established at that time and airborne radiometric surveys were commenced by the Government and by private companies. During the succeeding summer another important discovery was made by private airborne surveys in the northern Black Hills, and the area favorable for uranium ore was expanded many times. Between that summer of 1952 and the present, many individuals and groups have explored, developed, and exploited their claims until now uranium ore is produced in significant quantities and substantial reserves have been developed. The Black Hills portion of the geologic map of the U. S. issued by the U. S. Geological Survey is shown in Fig. 1. Sedimentary formations are exposed as a series of cuestas and hogbacks in a roughly annular pattern with the older sediments resting on the pre-Cambrian core, which is exposed in the eastern and southern portions of the dome. The South Dakota-Wyoming state line bisects the area from north to south. The Cheyenne River crosses the southern tip of the Black Hills and the Little Missouri bounds them roughly on the north. Headquarters of the AEC in the Black Hills is the Sub Office at Hot Springs, S. D. An ore buying station is located in Edgemont, 28 miles to the southwest, where a mill is presently under construction. The area of original uranium ore discovery and of principal activity in the southern Hills is a few miles north of Edgemont. Several areas of anomalous radioactivity have been noted between Dewey, S. D., and Newcastle, Wyo. A limited amount of ore has come from the Dewey area and private exploration is active there. The Carlile deposit, largest producing mine in the northern Black Hills to date, lies northwest of the Belle Fourche River near the western extremity of the Hills. Two of the larger known orebodies of the area are located near the Little Missouri River where a small window exposes the favorable strati-graphic horizon of the Fall River sandstone. Small production has recently come from Barlow Canyon, near Devils Tower, Wyo., Fig. 2, and numerous areas of anomalous radioactivity are known in the vicinity.
