Mining activity has been an integral component in the New Zealand economy since the early days of European settlement. Recently in common with other Pacific Rim countries there has been a resurgence of investment in gold. A sustained and increasing exploration effort has resulted in the rapid development of alluvial gold mining operations, a number of hard rock gold discoveries, and a general optimism about New Zealand's prospectivity. New Zealand's attitude to mining development, in particular hard rock gold mining is influenced by high environmental values and a concern, largely through absence of examples, that modern mining may not perform to community standards. While these environmental concerns are wide spread there is a growing realisation that gold mining, if properly managed, can take place within acceptable environmental standards and that it has the potential to contribute significantly to New Zealand's economy. New mining developments have an important role to play in this process. The mining industry in New Zealand is now at a crossroads. Having invested substantially and confirmed the potential for gold mining developments it has found itself in a rapidly changing economic environment as the Labour Government puts in place a number of fundamental economic reforms. The reforms are intended to free up the economy removing the rafts of subsidies and protective measures which have stultified initiative and growth. A fundamental reform of the public service has been initiated including corporatisation of trading activities and the establishment of a Department of Conservation to administer estensive areas of Crown land. Both petroleum and mining taxation are being reviewed with the intention of creating a more neutral competitive environment. Mining legislation is also being re-examined with both efficiency and equity objectives. While the current environment is characterised by uncertainty and rapid change, the outcome will be a more market-oriented stable policy environment, to the mutual benefit of the industry itself and the New Zealand Community.

"In recent years, there has been rapid growth in the use of natural stone building and construct ion products. The largest growing markets are for pre-fabricated natural stone panels for interior and exterior wall facing and flooring. This increased demand is attributed to advanced quarrying and processing technologies, renewed appreciation for the aesthetic appeal of natural stone, and to the superior durability of natural stone when compared to glass, steel, and concrete. Geologically, plutonic rocks, and to a lesser extent marble and limestone/dolostone, are used extensively for these applications. This paper details the economic structure of the dimension stone industry, describes the necessary characteristics of a stone quarry, and outlines the geological criteria which favour an economic quarry.INTRODUCTIONThe world building stone industry has remained relatively stable over the last 5 to 6 years. In contrast, the North American stone industry has experienced substantial growth during that period. The increased use of commercial granite is primarily responsible for this growth, where use as exterior wall veneer for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings represents the largest and fastest growing market.This increased usage in the construction industry has been sparked by the application of new technologies in quarrying, processing and installation , ma king natural stone more competitive with man-made materials which are energy intensive to produce, and have risen dramatically in price. The development of safer, time-saving stone installation techniques has also appealed to the liability-conscience construction industry. Finally, there is a trend by designers and architects toward utilizing long-la sting weather-resistant building materials, and a renewed appreciation of the aesthetic appeal of natural stone. The other large user of granite is the monument industry of North America which, although it has decreased slightly in recent years, still consumes approximately 40% of all commercial granite produced. The local use of commercial marble has remained relatively stable, and North America still relies heavily on European sources and suppliers. There has been some concern over the use of marble for exterior applications in areas subject to acid rain, and in colder climates where the marble ma y be vulnerable to freeze thaw cycles. Despite these concerns, the greatest problem is not with the structural breakdown of marble but the inability of some marbles to retain their polished finishes in the se environments. As a result, there has been an increase in the use of granite at the expense of marble for exterior applications. Finally, commercial marble is used extensively for interior flooring, wall s, counter tops, furniture, sculptures, and stairway components"

PLAGER gold is perhaps the most difficult of the common mineral deposits to evaluate. Not only are the erratic pay streaks a source of never-ending uncertainty, but the spotty distribution of the gold in iso¬lated nuggets is a perpetual source of error and disappointment to the sampler. Experienced engineers have long realized this difficulty and have been wary in predicting assay values except in the most general terms, and then only after extensive and usually expensive sampling. During the past year I have had the opportunity of checking a number of gold placers, and from the results obtained I believe that the microscope may be employed to advantage in placer sampling.

"On January 15, 1920, a man was killed by falling rock in a limestone quarry in Utah. The quarry was visited by a representative of the Industrial Commission of Utah, and the cause of the accident was carefully determined. The facts concerning this accident, and the Bureau's recommendations are given in some detail in the hope that quarrymen may take steps to avoid dangerous conditions, and thus reduce the liability to accident.The quarry rock face is about 180 feet high, and the ledge is covered with an overburden of 10 to 20 feet of a mixture of soil and boulder. The rock face is not vertical, but slants at an angle of about 45° to 50°, while the stripping face stands at an angle of 70° to 80°, and is flush with the rock face. The conditions are shown in the accompanying figure.The man who was killed was employed in breaking rock at the foot of the quarry wall. The sun had been shining on the stripping face, and probably thawed the ground, thus permitting a boulder weighing about 20 pounds to roll down the slanting face, striking, and almost instantly killing the workman who was working with his back toward the quarry wall."

The sucessful use of sewage sludge in land rehabilitation has been established and there is an abundance of overseas information on sludge reuse. Unfortunately Australia is behind Europe and North America in establishing sludge reuse policies and regulations. In Victoria the EPA has no publicised regulations and no communicated policy for sludge reuse. In the absence of sound regulations the onus is firmly on the operators of sewage treatment works to ensure land application of sludge is safe for the environment.

This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

In February 1996 the OECD's Environment Policy Committee will commemorate its 25th anniversary with a fifth meeting at Ministerial level. Environment ministers will be taking stock of the progress made by OECD countries in protecting and managing the environment in that quarter-century, and sharing views on likely challenges and co-operative responses. Ministers can point to many important accomplishments. Scientific understanding and technological tools for establishing and monitoring risks to human health and the environment have improved dramatically since the early 1970s. All OECD countries now have in place comprehensive environmental legislation, supported by specialized institutions for policy design, implementation and enforcement. The results of these efforts are increasingly evident in the form of cleaner air and water, and improved protection of natural areas, notwithstanding the many complex problems that remain.

Bethlehem, Pa.-At the present time I believe there are 35 electric steel furnaces under construction in the United States, and many more in operation. The United States Steel Corporation, for example, is putting up for one firm a plant of eight electric furnaces. The principal increase in use of the electric furnace at the present time is based on its superiority for making steel for shrapnel and for munitions of war. I understand that electric steel has been found far more reliable and suitable than ordinary steel for these purposes in Europe.

The Province of Ontario covers an area of some 400 thousand square miles, however the subject I will be talking about today, the licencing of pits and quarries in southern Ontario, refers to about one quarter of this total area but contains better than 93% of the total population of the province or about 8 million people. Southern Ontario had and still has many inviting features to industry. The Great Lakes almost surround us, hydro power has been relatively inexpensive and abundant, but more in line with our topic today are the ample deposits of sand, gravel and limestone, all of which are used directly or indirectly throughout and are the mainstay of our construction industry. I say we are fortunate to have these non-renewable resources in abundance in close proximity to our industrial and metropolitan areas, but like so many of our resources we have taken them for granted for too long. What has happened in our case, as I am sure is common in many of your own similar situations, because of the recent, current popular trend by naturalists and environ- mentalists to preserve our natural heritage at the expense of all else, through parklands and indiscriminate zoning policies, these once abundant reserves have been tremendously eroded.

THROUGHOUT this article, minerals used in the paint industry are designated 'pigments'. They may be classified in two groups: (1) Pigments which are used in the state in which they occur in nature, requiring only mechanical preparation. (2) Pigments which require heating or chemical treatment before use, in order to obtain from them a product of the desired quality or shade of colour. They may be further classified according to colour, as follows: White Pigments .-These include calcium carbonate (chalk, marble), gypsum and alabaster, kaolin-or china-clay, and magnesia. However, the white pigments most extensively used are compounds prepared chemically from minerals containing lead, zinc, titanium, and antimony. The white pigments are of particular importance because, not only are they used by themselves, but they also serve as adjuncts to other colours for the production of special shades. Yellow Pigments.-These are mainly naturally occurring ferric hydroxides, as limonite and bog iron ore, or similar. compounds prepared artificially. Brown Pigments .-Pigments of this group are distinguished for their beauty and depth of colour, and many of them are used in the finest of paintings. Familiar names are sienna, umber, and Vandyke brown. They are for the most part ferric hydroxides, containing varying amounts of water; but the group also includes a manganese brown, which consists chiefly of a mixture of oxide and hydroxide of manganese. Red Pigments.-Chief among this group is ferric oxide, known under various trade-names, such as Canadian red, Persian red, etc., and also the much prized and somewhat rare vermilion. The pigment used is either naturally occurring hematite, de-hydrated limonite, or artificially produced red ferric oxide.

In Switzerland at present, the longest railway tunnels in the world, the Gotthard(57 km) and the Loetschberg base tunnel (34km) are under construction. For thischallenge six high-tech HERRENKNECHT Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM)are applied, which have to excavate approx. 80 km at the Gotthard and 20 km at the Loetschberg Tunnels. The machines being used are of a single Gripper-TBM type, which are equipped with the latest rock support techniques, in order to optimize the quality of the working conditions for the personnel which have direct impact on the quality of the tunnels. The different requirements of the projects based on different speci?cations within the tender documents led to completely different TBM concepts which will be reviewed in detail in this paper.

In order to clarify the gas flow and motion of coke and reaction in the raceway, the mathematical raceway model was developed. This model consists of the equations of momentum and continuity of gas and coke. The simulated results were compared with the results of the cold and hot experimental model. The relationship between the blast volume and the raceway size, the pressure distribution and the velocity distribution of coke are in good agreement with the experimental results. Moreover the equations of reaction and heat conservation were simultaneously calculated with the dynamic equations. Distributions of gas composi- itions and temperature were simulated and found to be in good agreement with the distributions of gas compositions of CO, CO2 on the tuyere level measur- ed in the hot experimental model.

Two comprehensive papers have appeared regarding the forms of copper that occur in smelter slags, one by Frank E. Lathe1 and the other by C. G. Maier and G. D. Van Arsdale.2 These authors comment on other published results and draw conclusions from their own investiga-tions. The development of X-ray examination of minerals and improve-ment in high-power microscopic methods make it possible today to get additional evidence by means that were not available to earlier investi-gators. The present work was confined to reverberatory slags obtained from five different plants. Some definite conclusions were reached regarding the forms of copper present in these slags. In most cases these agree with some of the findings of Maier and Van Arsdale but new methods of attack were used in the investigation.

The strategic importance of the metallic minerals in our industrial economy, and the declining rates of discovery have focused attention on means of exploration for new mineral deposits. A consideration of exploration techniques leads to an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of geo- physics as a tool for mining exploration. One means of evaluation will be to compare the use of geophysics in petroleum exploration with its possible uses in mining.

In an environment of decreasing ore grade, increasing costs and uncertainty with respect to commodity prices, the industry could benefit from evaluating alternative technologies and innovative circuit configurations. The flexible circuit approach suggests that the design of grinding circuits can be adapted to changes in feed properties and economic conditions. Advances in modelling and simulation are enabling metallurgists to predict the performance of more complex circuit configurations with increased confidence. Ore variability information and processing costs may be used as modelling inputs to determine the optimum processing conditions at a given time. A case study has been completed demonstrating the value of combining a flexible circuit with a model-based optimisation of the process. Ore properties and equipment performance data obtained in operating plants have been used to model and simulate flexible circuit configurations.This paper explores strategies to introduce flexibility to existing circuit configurations when processing ores with high variability. Multicomponent models incorporated in the model developers’ kit (MDK) allow the simulation of more complex and flexible circuits. This capability enables demonstration of the potential to enhance metal production through adapting processing routes according to the ore type being processed. The simulation of different flow sheet configurations allowed the definition of the best option for maintaining the metal production when treating lower grade ores, highlighting the advantages of flexible circuit configurations compared with a one-process-fits-all approach.CITATION:Foggiatto, B, Hilden, M M and Powell, M S, 2014. The World War I1 spread to Russia on June 22, 1941, when the German Armies began their invasion. The Soviet industries, which were already engaged in a tremendous armament program, further accelerated the flow of munitions, and equipment and supplies for all purposes not directly military were either entirely eliminated or reduced to an absolute minimum. With the occupation by German armies of the Dniepr and Kharkov industrial regions, this trend was necessarily further accentuated. The oil industry of Russia, in consequence, was left to rely more and more upon itself, its own very limited manufacturing facilities, extensive repair shops and probably much used equipment out of order stacked in the warehouses. All evidence available to date points to the fact that the new situation not only did not affect the production either quantitatively or qualitatively, but, on the contrary, caused a larger flow of much needed fuels to the country's war machine, primarily by renaissance of both management and labor. The oil industry of the Soviet Union, left to depend entirely upon itself for equip ment and supplies, and even for new workers and technicians to replace those called into the services, did and is still doing a good and effective job. Since it could not hope for new equipment and parts and could not blame any other industry for the delays in delivery, it dragged out old machines from storage and repaired them in its own machine shops. Often such stored and used equipment was but slightly defective, waiting for some small part from factories in Central Russia, plants that now were either in German hands or entirely converted to the manufacture of munitions. More particularly, instead of the pipe that could not be taken to the Caucasus from Central Russia, casing reclaimed from abandoned or submarginal wells was used, or pipe from the abandoned or but slightly used pipe lines; and this practice is being continued even now on a large scale, to create an ample reserve for the duration of the conflict. Indirectly such a development was even an improvement on pre-war days, when many wells about to be completed had to wait for weeks, even months, for the arrival of new pipe, all blame then being placed outside of the industry on the factories in Central Russia. For the purpose of reclaiming equipment and pipe still usable, special crews were organized. The war also caused much quicker adaptation of certain American practices and introduction of many emergency measures, such as: removal of derricks upon completion of wells and the use of drilling equipment mounted on skids for rapid transfer from location to location—both of these practices, while standard in the U.S.A., being new in Russia; installation of simplified surface pumping units; substitution of wooden bearings in the surface pump equipment; completion of wells in the Ural-Volga district, where formations are hard and tight throughout the sedimentary column, without either casing or

This paper is concerned with the development of an in situ recovery of boric acid from a deep-seated colemanite deposit in California. The deposit contains 147 million tons of borate ore containing 6.4% boron oxide (B203). It is the largest undeveloped colemanite deposit in the United States and because of its unique occurrence and grade, in situ extraction appears to be the most economic viable process. The paper covers the geological, mineralogical, hydrological, well-field development, and extraction considerations leading to the initial pilot plant and subsequent demonstration plant phases of the project. Market potential aspects and preliminary economics of the project are also covered.

"The development, in Ontario, of a common industry-wide program for the development of skills for employees in underground hard-rock mining is described. This program is designed to increase the productivity of individual workers by improving their skill levels, while at the same time ensuring that employees are instructed in the requisite safety and health aspects of performing various underground tasks. The program's development through a management-labour-government tripartite approach is described. How this program was coordinated with new Government Regulations on Occupational Health and Safety dealing with mandatory training of underground employees is also outlined. IntroductionThis paper will describe briefly what modular training is all about and outline why, and how, it was developed in Ontario on an industry-wide basis. Simply stated, what's been accomplished to date is an industry-wide program for developing the mining skills of underground production employees.The basic objective of this program is to improve the productivity of underground workers. It involves developing an employee's skills to improve his productivity and, because working productively involves knowing how to do a job safely, the program includes instructing an employee in the various safety and health aspects of underground work. An important and, I believe, distinguishing point about the development of this program is that it has been done with the full participation, cooperation and commitment of management, labour and government.It's of considerable interest to note that companies in Ontario who are now using this program are finding that new employees are approximately six months further advanced in productivity than was the case before its use, and in some cases the frequency of accidents has shown a reduction among those employees who have taken this program as compared to those who haven't"

IT IS impossible to speak in exact terms of the effect that selective flotation has had, is having, and may have on the State of Utah. Its results enter into the economic structure of the state in so many ways and its ramifications are so widespread, that every line of industry is affected. Some effects can be definitely determined; others can be reasonably approximated; but the effect as a whole can not be set out in exact figures. Utah is essentially a mining state; mining is its basic industry and always will be. Agriculture, equally a basic industry, and of course, equally vital, can be practiced on only 6 per cent. of the 85,000 square miles of its area. It follows, therefore, that the economic future of this state depends upon a development of its natural resources. About 6 or 7 years ago, the mining industry in Utah was at a low ebb. This condition was caused partly by postwar conditions and other temporary causes, but prevailed also, which was most important, because the direct-smelting ores of the state were being rapidly exhausted and the cost of treatment of complex ores was almost prohibitive. Furthermore, the wet concentration of low-grade ores was unsatisfactory and did not result in producing a good smelting product. On visualizing this situation, one of the large smelting companies in the valley had the courage, ability and faith to develop and expand the principles involved in selective flotation of complex ores. This example has been followed by other smelting and reduction companies and the result has changed the entire aspect of the mining industry in Utah. The utilization of the zinc in the low-grade, lead-zinc-silver ores was the principal problem to be solved. The average yearly production from the State of Utah for the 10 years beginning 1914 and ending 1923, was something less than 10,000 tons of zinc concentrates. This period includes the world war, when abnormal prices stimulated production. In 1924, selective flotation began to be practiced on a considerable scale, replacing concentration by gravity and bulk flotation which had been used generally until this time.
