The approximate production of petroleum in the various fields and for the country as a whole is shown in the following table, the figures for the later months of the year being estimated. Among the developments of the year may be mentioned the finding by the Standard Oil Co. of a small production, about 6290 bbl., at Aguas Blancas in the Province of Salta near the Bolivian border, and of about 88,000 bbl. at Lomitas, near Tartagal in the same province. The Government (Yaciementos Petroliferos Fiscales) in the last four months of the year also obtained about 6290 bbl, from Quebrada Galarce. .The oil found in Salta is of good grade and while the quantity is small great hopes of larger production are entertained. I is obvious that details such as the physical and chemical properties and methods of heat-treating of the materials mentioned must be omitted in a paper on the subject of materials used in oil-refinery pumps1. Only sufficient identification is given to enable the reader to find additional information from already published data. Also, the subject covers many operating conditions, but only the most important services can be discussed here. To the oil refiner, the pumping equipment is of vital interest. Practically every refinery operation, from the charging of crude oil to a distillation unit to the shipping of refined products, involves some form of pumping machinery. Intermediate refining stages involve a great variety of pumping machinery to carry out successfully the aims of the refinery technologist. Temperatures at which oils are handled vary from — 50" F. to 900" F. Pressure may vary from subatmospheric to 2000 1b. per sq. inch. The selection of the proper materials involves a careful consideration of the conditions under which the particular pump must operate. The four most important considerations are temperature, pressure, corrosion, and abrasion or wear. Consideration of temperature may be divided into three parts: (1) extremely low temperatures of the order of —50" F.; (2) temperatures at atmospheric or slightly above; (3) temperatures from 200" to 900" F. Pressures fall into two groups: (1) pressures reached by ordinary trade pumps of the order of 200 lb. per sq. in., (2) extreme pressure conditions involving pressures as high as 2000 lb. Noncorrosive and corrosive oils can be treated differently. Under the latter falls corrosion in the presence of water, which will occur up to 250" F. The second type of corrosion occurs in high-temperature pumping equipment, with temperatures from 450" to 900" F., largely caused by sulfur compounds. In coal preparation, large dense medium cyclones (DMC) at low pressure heads (typically 9D where D = cyclone diameter) are the norm. This contrasts with high density mineral applications where, largely for historical reasons, smaller cyclones at high heads are the standard. There are advantages in preferring large diameter cyclones at low heads, assuming that metallurgical performance does not suffer significantly. These include simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, reduced medium pumping demands, smaller buildings and overall lower capital and operating costs. In 2008, therefore, Xstrata Zinc decided to trial a single DSM-design 800 mm cyclone in one of its four DMC lines at Mt Isa, replacing the four 400 mm cyclones previously installed. Circumstances allowed a low head of 9.5 D to be trialled, compared with the existing 400 mm head of 21.5 D. This paper describes the trial, including tests using painted ore particles as tracers, estimates of yield and metal recovery, and wear monitoring. The larger unit performed well. There was no evidence that metallurgical performance in terms of metal recovery and waste reject rate suffered, and there was some evidence that it may have improved. Cyclone life increased, and preliminary data suggest that the replacement cost of the 800 mm cyclones is less than half that of the 400 mm units, and this is expected to improve. The plant layout and operability have also improved significantly. Xstrata has therefore decided to convert the whole plant to four low head 800 mm units, replacing the original 16 high head 400 mm units. The paper includes an explanation of the effect of static head on DMC separating force. It also reviews earlier research on diamond applications, and applies a general DMC process model to the Xstrata case, both of which confirm that large, low head cyclones are appropriate in mineral applications, contrary to conventional practice. Such units could significantly reduce both the capital and operating costs of DMC plants in mineral applications.

INTRODUCTION Behavior of clay soils in response to tunneling is reasonably well understood by reference to the tunnel stability factor NT = Pz/su (Peck, 1969; Heuer, 1974). With this analysis tool, care must be taken to use a value of clay shear strength which represents the actual mass strength, considering such factors as slickensided fissures often found in stiff and hard clays. Behavior of clean sand and gravel soils is also reasonably well understood. Above the water table these soils must be assumed to act as running ground unless they are known to have significant cementation or have a very dense and angular interlocked grain structure. Below the water table they must be tunneled using some form of groundwater control such as dewatering, grouting, freezing, or internal fluid pressure in the tunnel such as compressed air or a slurry tunneling machine. The internal fluid pressure must approximately balance the external water head. Without such precautions these soils behave as flowing ground and may yield large volumes of water flow into the tunnel. A wide range of very fine sand, silty sand, cohesionless silt, and clayey sand soils exist in nature in a variety of geologic environments. The behavior of these soils in response to tunneling, and guidelines for anticipating their behavior, are not well described in the literature. Because of their content of fine particles, these materials may behave as if they initially have appreciable cohesion and moderate to low permeability. They may exhibit significant standup time, and require tunnel internal fluid pressure (compressed air or slurry pressure) less than the full external water head. It is important to be able to estimate the behavior of these soils when planning construction methods. For example, if the external water pressure is 140 kPa (20 psi), but soil stability at the tunnel face can be achieved as a compressed air pressure of 80 kPa (12 psi), a large cost savings may result.

Various reagents are added to flotation pulps to manipulate the chemical environment in order to create favourable conditions for the separation of the desired mineral from the unwanted gangue. Interactions occur between these reagents and between the other chemical parameters existing in the flotation pulp which complicate the elucidation of the behaviour of the respective reagents. This paper discusses the roles of the main classes of reagents added viz. collectors, frothers, depressants and activators, as well as the interactions between frothers and collectors. A case study reporting synergistic interactions between thiol collectors in the flotation of pyrite at pH = 4 is included. The use of Potassium n-butyl xanthate (PNBX) and a dithiocarbamate type collector (DTC) were tested both as pure collectors and as components in a collector mixture. In the batch flotation tests sulphur recovery and grade, water recovery, rate of recovery and image analysis of the surface froth were used to evaluate the effect of the mixture on the overall flotation performance. Bubble loading tests showed that the use of the mixture improved the efficiency of the particle collection process by bubbles. Thermochemical measurements of the adsorption of the collectors onto the mineral, indicated the formation of different surface products by the two collectors.

During the last quarter-century, exploration for metallic deposits in Maine has been sporadic with peaks generally coinciding with periods of high metal prices. Known cases of regional or semi-regional evaluations are few; most efforts have been local and usually intensive. On the basis of broad geologic groups, the State has been divided into five fundamental environments: ( 1) coastal metamorphic belt; (2) southern volcanic belt; (3) Silurian slate belt; ( 4) northern volcanic belt; and ( 5) Devonian slate belt. Although not restricted to these areas, exploration in recent years has been concentrated in the northern and southern volcanic belts. Notable examples of recent exploration activity, directed to sulfide minerals, include: ( 1) the Knox County nickel-copper-bearing ultramafic rocks; (2) the Harborside (Cape Rosier) copper-zinc deposit; (3) the Second Pond (Black Hawk) zinc-copper-lead-silver deposit; ( 4) the Big Hill-Barrett lead-zincsilver- copper-gold zones; (5) the Parmachenee copper-zinc belt; ( 6) the Moxie Lake nickeliferous peridotite; and (7) the Attean quartzmonzonite molybdenum-copper occurrences. The Second Pond and Harborside prospects appear to be close to production. Systematic investigations for non-metallic deposits appear to have been aimed principally toward limestone, asbestos, diatomaceous earth, and spodumene-bearing pegmatites. Advances in prospecting methods, high metal prices, a favorable business outlook, increasing cooperation from large landholders, and some discoveries support the probability of increased exploration activity in Maine during the coming decade.

"Research and development on the production of liquid fuels from coal is rapidly expanding worldwide. AImost every industrialized country is engaged in coal liquefaction research and process development. In Canada, the federal government, through CANMET, is actively supporting coal liquefaction research and development in a number of areas.A review of the basic principles and some of the processes in the production of liquid fuels from coal is presented with reference to the characteristics of the Canadian coal resource base. An overview of the CANMET coal liquefaction contract program is presented and specific results from the batch autoclave studies carried out with Saskatchewan lignite and Nova Scotia high-volatile bituminous coals are discussed. The development of a laboratory-scale continuous-flow coal liquefaction unit at the Energy Research Laboratories of CANMET to investigate the co-processing of coal and bitumen/heavy oil is also described.IntroductionThe CANMET coal liquefaction program is made up of two interrelated parts. The first part consists of the research and development work being carried out at the Energy Research Laboratories near Ottawa, Ontario. The second focuses on contracted research and development as part of the Coal Conversion Program of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. The long-term objective of the liquefaction program is to contribute to Canadian liquid fuels production through the definition, research, development and demonstration of different coal liquefaction technologies for the Canadian marketplace.In coal liquefaction, the main objective is to produce liquid hydrocarbons with a higher hydrogen-to-carbon (HIC) ratio than the coal feedstock while reducing heteroatom (S,O,N) content, removing mineral matter and minimizing gas production. Typical atomic HIC ratios for a variety of Canadian fossil fuels are shown in Figure I. Canadian coals have about 500/0 of the HIC ratio present in tar sand bitumens and heavy oils and only about 20% of the ratio available in methane. In general, the cost of synthetic fuels production is related to the cost of hydrogen and, therefore, to the increase of HIC ratio between feedstock and products. On this basis, the production of liquid fuels from coal would be expected to be more costly than liquid fuels produced from bitumens and heavy oils. However, for mined tar sands and some heavy oils this difference tends to be offset by the large sand content (>90 mass %) of tar sand bitumens and the increased production costs of viscous heavy oils. For example, it can easily be shown that for equal weights of distillate <525°C) yield, current coal liquefaction processes required between two and three times less mined coal by weight than the mined tar sand s required for the most technically advanced processes proposed for bitumen upgrading."

EXPLANATIONS of the basic procedure for making earth-conductivity studies by the Eltran method have already appeared in several places.1,2,3 In its essentials, this method consists of applying step functions of voltage to one pair of earth grounds and measuring the transient potential resulting at a separate pair of ground points. As previously pointed out,4 the transient potential resulting from a suddenly applied steady voltage is the indicial transfer function of Carson,5 which has been extensively studied in network theory. [ ] The discussion here, with one special exception, will ignore the problem of how the physical configuration of the earth affects the transient response voltage; it appears that this phase of the problem has been solved in only a few special cases having any direct bearing on the prospecting problem. Entirely distinct from the potential theory aspect of the conductivity problem is the interesting material that can be had from studying the well-known network relations between cause and effect in linear circuits, and thus deducing criteria for the application of the several experimental methods available. To do this, only one assumption need be made about the nature of the earth. The earth is to be considered a linear conductor within the tolerance of ordinary measurements. The discussion will be restricted to collinear electrode configuration like that of Fig. I, since this is the only type of spread practical for use with driving currents that vary with time. Here one pair of grounds carries the driving current, and in line with these and external to them is a [ ] pair of potential probes. The problem will be to consider the relation between the different voltages appearing between the potential circuit terminals when various types of driving voltage sources are inserted in the current circuit. Suppose that the grounding points G1 and G2 make good contact with the earth, and that a battery of sufficient voltage to produce one ampere of direct current is introduced into the current circuit by the closing of a switch. The potential transient response to such a voltage can be measured by taking an oscillogram at the potential circuit terminals, giving the time function that has been called A(t).4 This time function has been solved for analytically in the case of a homogeneous earth,6,7 and the

"Hyperaccumulator plants can be utilized as ‘metal crops’ in agromining operations. This emerging technology produces ‘bio-ore’ by growing ‘metal crops’ on sub-economic ore materials, such as natural ultramafic soils. In a typical application plant material is periodically harvested, followed by air-drying and incineration to produce the bio-ore intermediate. The bio-ore is of very high grade (>15 wt. % nickel), and of high purity, and may be processed into a number of different products (including nickel metal, nickelbased catalysts and pure nickel salts). Current research efforts from our team focus on Mediterranean climate field trials (Albania, Spain) and tropical climate field trials (Malaysia, Indonesia). Field-scale demonstrations are required to provide evidence of real-life performance and of economic viability. If the trials are successful, agromining may in the near future support local livelihoods with income opportunities as an alternative type of agriculture: to farm nickel.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDHyperaccumulators, plants with the exceptional ability to uptake and concentrate trace elements in their shoots, can be utilized as ‘metal crops’ in agromining operations (Van der Ent et al., 2013a; Chaney et al., 1998; 2007; Baker et al., 2010). Agromining produces ‘bio-ore’ from harvested ‘metal crops’ grown on unconventional resources such as natural ultramafic soils (Van der Ent et al., 2015a). The bio-ore is a high purity and very high-grade (>15 wt. % nickel) product intermediate that may be turned into a range of different nickel products (nickel metal, nickel-based catalysts and pure nickel salts). The potential for agromining is greatest in tropical regions (Asia-Pacific Region: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia) where very large expanses of ultramafic soils exist (Van der Ent et al., 2013b). Agromine operations may replace existing marginal agriculture on poor ultramafic soils, for example oil palm plantations that require high fertilizer inputs to be profitable, or take place under a cocropping regime. The ability of ‘metal crops’ to achieve high nickel concentrations in biomass (and hence in harvested bio-ore) from soils with just <0.5 wt. % nickel, makes it possible to access non-conventional resources, not accessible by traditional mining techniques. For example, agromining could be implemented both on the large ‘halo’ around the mine leases, and as part of the progressive rehabilitation process after conventional resource extraction. As with all methods for resource extraction, agromining will be finite due to the diminishing concentrations of nickel in the zone accessible by plant roots (Chaney et al., 2014). Nevertheless, considering soil materials with 0.2 wt. % nickel and ‘metal crops’ with a yield of 100 kg nickel ha-1 the agromining venture may be sustainable for decades (Van der Ent et al., 2015a)."

SINCE the time of the early Egyptians, the use of copper has been a boon to the life of most of the civilized world. Its use has been varied; in many connections, the art by which it attained its greatest usefulness has been lost. In this paper an endeavor will be made to take into consideration some of the many changes that have occurred during the last 40 years of copper-smelting operations. During that period the copper blast furnace has been almost forced out of existence by new methods of ore concentration-first, gravity concentration, and then flotation. These new methods of concentration introduced many new factors into the metallurgy of copper. The product was wet, it was fine and it was high grade. To overcome all these factors many changes have been necessary throughout the smelting agenda. New equipment has been necessary for transportation, unloading, sampling, bedding and moisturing in all smelting plants, especially the custom smelter. During the early days of "flotation," little was known about filtering or the use of an alkaline circuit; often the concentrate going to the smelter contained 20 to 25 per cent moisture. It is easy to imagine the difficulty arising with a product of this nature when it had to be shoveled by hand labor. To meet these conditions, mechanical unloading and sampling devices were soon developed. In many instances such good progress was made that actual costs for handling this unfavorable product were lower than those formerly incurred on the old product. Today most sampling of copper ores and concentrates is being done by mechanical sampling, pipe or augur sampling, or shovel sampling. Where concentrates are uniform in metal content, a great many of the plants now use pipe or augur sampling. For spotty ores, the old shovel sample with cone and quartering during the final stages is still in use. Where big tonnages are handled, mechanical sampling of concentrates is being done, with satisfactory results. To curtail slow and tedious cutting and mixing procedure, mechanical mixing boxes, splitters and cutters are used to cut down labor costs. MILLING As crude ores become scarcer, the use of milling operations increases. The few crude ores that are still smelted are used as fluxing types. To use these ores finer grinding has been found advantageous. This has made for better bedding and fluxing conditions, which in turn makes for faster smelting, lower fuel consumption and better metal recovery. The degree of fineness is more or less determined by the nature of the product. Most plants have set a standard of through ¾ -in. mesh screen for roaster- reverberatory smelting and through ¾ in. mesh screen for converter fluxes. For some refractory ores; even finer grinding has been found to be advantageous for good reverberatory smelting.

A relatively small area in Malaya, about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide, is the most important source of tin in the world. Some tin is recovered in other parts of the peninsula. Of the tin mined, 98 pct is recovered from alluvial deposits. From 1935 to 1941 the average annual world production of tin was 190,000 tons. The average annual production from Malaya during the same period was 62,000 tons or about one third of the total. Other producing countries, in order of importance, were the Netherlands East Indies 34,000 tons, Bolivia 30,000, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Siam, Burma, China, and a few others with smaller amounts. The serious shortage of tin during the war period was due to the fact that the Japanese were occupying Malaya, Netherlands East Indies, Siam, Burma, and China which, together, formerly were producing 65 pct of the world supply. Because of the importance of tin in the world economy, and because of the fact that little is generally known in this country regarding the methods of recovering the tin in Malaya, it is believed that a short description of the industry, as carried on there, may be of interest to many of the readers. In addition you may be interested in the effect of the Japanese occupation, subsequent recovery of the properties and conditions existing at that time. The Malay Peninsula lies at the southeast tip of Asia. Singapore, a British colony, is situated on a small island at the southern end of the peninsula. It is a city of nearly a million population, an important world port, the site of a large British naval base and of one of the tin smelters. The Federation of Malaya consists of nine states, plus Penang, Malacca, and other small areas formerly part of the Straits Settlements, and it now covers the entire peninsula. The civil administration is controlled by the British. A constitution was adopted recently after reaching agreement with the Malay Sultans of the various states, who retain control of religious matters. The Capital is at Kuala Lumpur, a city of about 200,000 population, 250 miles north of Singapore and about half way to Penang. The country covers an area of 51,000 square miles, an area about equal to that of Florida and about one third that of California. It has a population of about seven million consisting of Malays, Chinese, East Indians, and a relatively small number of Europeans. The principal products are tin and rubber. There are over three million acres of planted rubber. The country is not self-supporting agriculturally as about one third of the necessary food supplies is imported. Rice is the principal food of the Asiatic population and some of the recent unrest is caused by a shortage of rice and the consequent high price. Good highways have been built through the settled part of the country. A railway, Government owned, extends from Singapore northward through the entire peninsula. The climate is tropical but health conditions are good for a tropical country. Because of the high cost of obtaining coal washability samples, it has been difficult in the past to obtain washability variograms. As a result, it could not be determined if the geostatistical prediction tool known as kriging can be applied to predict in situ coal washability characteristics. This paper presents the obtained variogram models for the Upper Freeport coal seam in western Pennsylvania. Variogram model parameters are presented for a total of 27 models. They are for four different variables: float- weight, ash, sulfur, and Btu, at seven different specific gravities: 1.275, 1.300, 1.325, 1.400, 1.600, 1.800, and 1.80,Sink. Based on the obtained variogram results, it can be con¬cluded that all attributes of coal washability show definite spatial correlation structures, and, consequently, geostatistics can be used to predict the in situ coal washability characteristics.

Electrochemical oxidation of arsenopyrite (FeAsS) has been investigated as an attempt to gain a better understanding of its dissolution chemistry. Rest potential measurements, cyclic voltammetry and constant potential experiments were conducted in the pH range from 8 to 12 in the absence and the in the presence of cyanide. A two-step reaction sequence is suggested by the electrochemical measurements. The initial step is described by: [FeAsS+6H20=Fe(OH)3+H2AsO3- +S°+7H++6e] The second step involves the oxidation of the arsenite and sulfur according to the following reactions: [H2As03-+H20=HAsO24-+3H++2e and S° +4 H2O=SO4-+3H++6e] Stoichiometric determinations confirm that 14 electrons are involved in the overall reaction.

China abounds with phosphate resources, but most of them are of old geological age, have high dolomite and other impurities, and are fine grained. Prior to beneficiation, fine grinding is usually required for liberating impurity minerals from phosphate. These deposits are perhaps the most difficult to treat phosphate ores in the world. In its 30-year campaign for efficient utilization of indigenous phosphate resources in China, the Lianyungang Design and Research Institute (CLDRI) has developed fine-particle flotation technology for beneficiation of such low-quality phosphate ores. The processes of direct flotation using L or S series depressants and carbonate flotation have been successfully applied on industrial scale with very satisfactory results. This paper introduces three phosphate beneficiation practices in China: the Jinping plant of Jiangsu province, the Dayukou plant of Hubei, and the Wengfu plant of Guizhou.

The introduction of biotechnological principles in hydrometallurgy has created new opportunities and challenges for the industry of mineral processing. During the 1950&apos;s and 608s, the mining wastes and unused complex mineral resources have been successfully treated in bacterial assisted heap and dump leaching processes, especially for the production of copper and uranium. The economic viability of bio- leaching technology lead to its world-wide acceptance by the mining industries. During the 1970&apos;s this technology grew into a more structured discipline which is called "biohydrometallurgy". Currently, bioleaching techniques are ready to be used, in addition to copper and uranium, for the extraction of cobalt, nickel, zinc, gold and silver from diverse mineral resources and for the desulfurization of certain coals. However, in a foreseeable future the biohydrometallurgical processes may be applied also for the treatment of high- grade ores and mineral concentrates using native and/or genetically engineered microorganisms.

"A computational model of rock blasting is being developed to examine the blasting problems associated with in situ oil shale processing. This model, however, will also be useful as a design tool for the traditional problems in rock blasting. The model includes fundamental treatment of both shock-wave propagation and the accumulation of brittle fracture in the rock. As a result, the model accurately predicts the degree and extent of fracturing as functions of design parameters. The model has proven useful for making parametric studies and for evaluation of alternate blast designs. This paper demonstrates the use of the numerical model to simulate the fracturing induced by the detonation of a vertical explosive column near a bench. The fracturing induced by three differentexplosives indicate that (in the chosen geometry) the most efficient breakage is done by a column of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil mixture (ANFO) used with a toe charge of aluminized ANFO. There was too much unfractured rock left when ANFO was used alone; aluminized ANFO used for the entire explosive column caused excessive fracturing. A final case involves ANFO used alone to fracture a different rock type. This case points out that in a different rock type, the ANFO will not leave excessive unfractured rock."

Sustainable development is defined as ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.’1 There has been considerable debate of late between environmentalists and mining operators concerning the current regulation and operation of mountaintop mining. To those not familiar with the practice, it essentially applies an area mining method to a mountaintop, removing all overburden above coal seams, resulting in full recovery of the resource with the excess or swell spoil material - (rock and dirt) being deposited in engineered fills in hollows to the side (known as hollow fills or valley fills - very similar to highway fills). Because most of the dialogue has been adversarial and mining’s response is perceived to be primarily reactive instead of proactive, a rift in communication and value systems between the two sides has widened. Since 1999, the global mining community has been concerned that there is a disconnect between mining practices and the values of today’s society.3 Working through the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) was created to review mining practices in a project entitled Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) driven by the following four goals:

Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) levels were measured in underground mines in the vicinity of diesel vehicles equipped with several types of emission control hardware. In general, the emission control devices appeared to reduce PAH levels, but the companion mutagen study suggested that the reduction might not always be beneficial. All underground PAH concentrations were below the threshold at which a significant impact on health might be expected, but recent animal exposure studies have indicated that PAHs may not be the primary hazard from chronic diesel fume exposure.
