THE discussion at the annual meeting of the paper on "Devices for Detecting Dangerous Gases in Mine Air" (published in. MINING AND METAL-LURGY, February 1, 1927, p. 69) was prefaced by the following description of a new portable methane indi-cator, presented by D. C. Ashmead: Two comparatively recent disasters in Utah are directly responsible for the perfection of the new methane detector. The first of these occurred on May 1, 1900, when 200 work-men lost their lives. The second disaster did not occur for more than two decades, when, on March 8, 1924, at the Castle Gate Mine No. 2, 172 workmen were killed. A dis-sembled safety lamp was later found at the seat of the ex-plosion. This indicated, as a possible cause, that the safety lamp had gone out and the fire boss had tried to relight it. These two disasters brought, the mine operators of the State of Utah to the concentrated attempt to end the loss of life through mine explosions. The Governor of the State appointed a committee, known as the Utah Mine Op-erators Committee, to study the phases of the problem, and this Committee in turn enlisted scientists all over the country in cooperative research. One group, under the direction of E. K. Judd, of the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, of Long Island City, New York, concentrated its efforts on develop-ing a methane detector which would be completely ade-quate. This is now successful, since in laboratory as well as actual coal-mine tests the apparatus has instantaneously and accurately detected the presence of extremely small amounts of methane.

The use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for tunnel construction of long tunnels in the Andes of South America has been of mixed success in the past due to a variety of reasons and key lessons can be recognized. A review of past TBM tunnel projects in the Andes has unveiled some interesting findings for different TBM tunnel approaches with both world records of progress as well as nearly in-completed projects with machines being abandoned. Key considerations for the use of TBMs for tunnel construction in the Andes include geological issues; (faults, rock type, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, groundwater inflows),depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, intermediate access possibilities, minimum tunnel size, support requirements, contractor and labour experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer highly recognized schedule benefits(high progress, no concrete lining) for a project if intermediate access adits are limited as well as hydraulic benefits for water conveyance projects. Minimum specifications for TBMs can be easily developed to suit the unique requirements of any project so as long as all factors are carefully considered. The overall conditions and factors associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs due to a perceived high risk. Finally, access for geotechnical investigations by drilling in the commonly steep terrain of the Andes is typically difficult and often not impossible. Alternative approaches for geotechnical investigations for TBM tunnels including comprehensive mapping, high-resolution airborne electric-magnetics for delineation of possible fault zones, and rock block sampling is presented and discussed.

"The analysis of the mining laws of the different European States reveals big diversities and, often, remarkable complications. This is due, firstly, to the history and culture of different States and, secondly, to the assets of natural resources. It is therefore difficult to find a common line between the text of the various mining laws, but it can be observed that nearly all the States distinguish the mining resources in two categories: the materials whose importance is considered strategic belong to the first category; in the second category the materials whose importance (above all economic) is mainly local are comprised. The paper, analysing in detail the planning procedures in some important Countries, investigates the possible perspectives of arranging some guide-lines for a correct approach to the sustainable exploitation planning/programming of mineral resources (with particular reference to "quarry" materials, such as aggregates), considering both the environment protection and the production needs."

Airborne respirable dust levels on longwalls can be reduced if operators approach the dust control problem in a logical and fundamental manner. This can be accomplished through the proper application and continued use of effective dust control techniques. The Bureau of Mines is currently assessing the effectiveness of longwall dust control techniques in use today to provide mine operators with guidelines for selecting the most appropriate control technology. This paper presents a fundamental approach to the problem of shearer dust control. Three dust control techniques to be discussed are: deep cutting/increased pick penetration for reducing the amount of respirable dust generated; drum water sprays/improved water supply system to suppress the amount of airborne respirable dust; and improved external water spray system, the "shearer-clearer," to push the dust close to the face. The techniques have been evaluated in field trials and have been shown to be both practical and effective in applications to control shearer generated dust.

An insufficient hydrologic data base exists for most large and small coal basins in Alaska owing to the lack of need in the past to collect data. The runoff process is insufficiently understood which is complicated by specifically northern phenomenon, and the lack of understanding of hydrologic relationships in permafrost environment. This paper presents an understanding of the hydrologic effects of frozen ground and presents methods by which the influence of surface mining upon the hydrologic balance can be analyzed.

As Assistant Director for Program Support for the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior, I am responsible for the regulatory and abandoned mine land programs under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977, which governs the environmental impacts of coal mining. My perspective is influenced by my current position and my previous positions in government and private industry. Sustainability is a cooperative effort of many parties and can only be achieved if each assumes their responsibilities for making it happen. I will highlight some of my thoughts on the role of government in achieving sustainability in the mining arena.

Integrating a research and development department into an engineering company's corporate structure can be rewarding to the engineering division, the R&D group, and, most of all, the company's clients. Actually, the R&D department is a logical extension of the conventional processing group within an engineering organization-but the R&D group provides services as needed to the engineering department while it is carrying out regular testing, pilot plant, and preliminary feasibility studies. Backup Services Provided With an R&D group, the engineering division does not need a process engineering group as such. The R&D group provides project backup services for feasibility studies, preliminary and detailed engineering, construction, and startup. The R&D group, in turn, benefits from its close association with project engineers, draftsmen, estimators, and computer capabilities in the engineering division. The client also benefits from the arrangement because R&D and engineering skills are available to both departments on an as-needed basis without standby eost. To handle the integrated responsibility of R&D projects, as well as conceptual design and preliminary feasibility studies, the R&D staff must be carefully selected. These research engineers should: • have a good background in plant practice as a mill superintendent or chief metallurgist; • be capable of organizing and supervising a testing program or a pilot plant campaign; •be innovative and willing to accept new ideas and concepts; • be able to translate lab test results into a workable flowsheet through sound conceptual design and feasibility studies; and •be able to communicate with clients. In short, the R&D engineer must be a jack of all process-engineering trades to successfully take a project from concept to operating reality. Currently the challenge that our society faces is to combine the economic activity for the continuously increasing needs of our expanding population with the necessary environmental integrity and the humanistic social concerns. In this paper, the methodologies that should be applied by the progressive mining industry in order to fall within the frame of the sustainable development are summarized. The Sappes project, an advanced gold mining project in north-eastern Greece, is presented together with the approaches adopted by Thrace Minerals S.A.

Keywords: Recycling, Consumer Battery, Fee rates On November 11, 1999, all types of spent consumer batteries are proclaimed to be collected in Taiwan. Under current recycling system, all producers and importers of consumer batteries have to pay a collection/recycling fee to the Recycling Management Fund (RMF) of EPA based upon the rate approved by EPA. Collectors and recycling plants receive subsidies from RMF according to the collected and treated amounts audited by an independent auditing organization. Collected spent consumer batteries only reached 923 tons in 2002 equivalent to 10% of the total quantity sold at the same year. How to increase the collection efficiency of used batteries becomes an important issue for EPA in Taiwan. The objective of this study is to explore current recycling system of spent consumer battery in increasing collection efficiency. Results provide some suggestions to Taiwan EPA regarding recycling route, recycling system, recycling rates, and recycling subsidies.

"The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) undertook a program to replace four bridges along approximately 4 mi (6.4 km) of US 340 in Northwest Virginia. Two of these bridges, which span Compton Creek and the Norfolk Southern Railroad respectively, are the subject of this article. HDR provided roadway and structural design as well as geotechnical engineering services for the Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge while their subconsultant, Saeed Associates, provided structural engineering services in support of the HDR roadway and geotechnical team for the Compton Creek Bridge.The project is located in the Valley and Ridge Geologic Province of Virginia, on an alignment that is adjacent to the Shenandoah River. The project lies within the Beekmantown Group consisting of limestone and dolostone that are prevalent and prone to karstic activity in a band that passes through the project area and north into Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. This area has been impacted by karst limestone conditions where caves and sinkhole activity is common. Caves at Luray and Front Royal, located to the south and north of the project, respectively, are popular public attractions.Since the potential for variability of subsurface conditions can be, and often is, greater in karst terrain, the need to develop a design that provides as much flexibility as possible during construction, and then to be prepared to efficiently review and respond to construction questions is heightened. Coordination and communication among the design staff, VDOT’s design and construction staff, and the contractor was a key factor in completion of this project.Compton Creek BridgeThe alignment for the new Compton Creek Bridge is located about 125 ft (38 m) west of the existing bridge, placing it between that bridge and the existing Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge. No information about the foundations was available for the existing bridges. Borings in the Compton Creek valley encountered extensive voids (some clay filled and some open) with numerous boulders, rock ledges and pinnacles, particularly on the north side of the creek. Geophysical and geotechnical investigations indicated that below a poor and variable upper zone of rock was a layer of more competent and consistent limestone, which appeared to contain little or no voids."

This work was done to develop methods for increasing the yields and purity of vanadium prepared by bomb reduction of vanadium compounds . Compounds reduced were V₂ 05 , V203 , VC , and VC13 . Sodium , calcium , and magnesium were used as reductants . Variables considered included reductant form , bomb size , pressure during reaction , method of ignition , and the use of slag fluidizing additives . It was concluded that yields of 85 to 90 percent can be effected by the calcium reduction of V205 in reactors measuring as much as 14 inches in diameter and 60 inches in height . Optimum charge composition included V₂05 , 65 percent excess calcium , and 0.4 moles sulfur per mole vanadium . Purity of the vanadium produced in large reactors varied from 99.5 to 99.8 percent . The higher purity metal , depending upon the amounts of interstitial impurities present , was usually cold ductile . Although high yields of up to 99.5 percent can be effected by bomb reduction of VC1 , the high pressures developed in the bombs and attack of the reactor walls by the byproduct chloride slags discourages this method of preparing vanadium . It was found that significant purification of impure regulus metal occurred when it was hydrided , crushed , acid leached , and vacuum dehydrided . Metal so treated can readily be converted to ductile sheet . A cost estimate based on the production of 100 tons of vanadium per year was prepared . It was concluded that pure ductile vanadium could be produced for approximately $ 20.00 per pound .

The froth phase plays an important role in the flotation and upgrading of the final concentrate. At present, the techniques that have been used in the mineral industry to measure the froth recovery have limitations. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of the froth in an industrial flotation cell. A unique device has been developed which is capable of decoupling the froth zone from the pulp zone. It consists of two concentric tubes. The inner tube acts as a dropback collection chamber or catcher. The particles that detach from the froth phase fall directly into the catcher and are collected as froth dropback. The froth recovery measurements were carried out in a rougher bank of a copper concentrator treating sulphide minerals. The dropback device is designed so that it can be immersed into a plant size flotation cell and plant froth recovery measurements can be taken at any given time. During the experiments, the bubbles laden with valuable mineral particles entered the device from the plant flotation cell, subsequently rising to form a froth layer at the top of the device. The particles that detached from the froth zone were collected in the dropback collection chamber whereas the concentrate sample was collected by a launder. By drying, sizing and chemical analysis of the concentrate and dropback samples, the froth recovery, was estimated on the basis of the valuable component. IF gold mining is to assume, or it might be better said to resume, a place of ' importance in the national economy of this country following the present war, then one must accept the thesis that gold will maintain the place it has for many generations held in the minds of men as a substantial and lasting emblem of material wealth-a metal in exchange for which men have always been ready to give up the possession of their worldly goods. The thought bas been advanced by some that gold is not necessary as a basis for exchange, that it has no real value anyway and, therefore, the world would wake up some morning to find that no one wanted gold and that, over night, its possession bad in some way ceased to be desired. Holding an equally extreme view there are those who advance the idea that, following the war, gold will in some mysterious way enjoy a fantastic increase in value. Neither of these extreme views can be successfully supported. To presume that by legislation or by general agreement gold would be or could be, over night, dethroned to the position of common stone is wholly beyond the realm of any possibility. The thought that this could come to pass is advanced by, and is attractive to, only those peoples who do not have gold and do r:ot have the means of producing it. To believe that the fundamental value of gold will suddenly change is likewise fantastic. I refer to the fundamental value, not the dollar price, of gold, for it cannot be denied that, with the colossal war expenditures now being made and with the huge national debts which are being piled up, there is a possibility, indeed per-haps a likelihood, that the dollar price .of gold may be revised upward. For the purpose of this discussion, however, that possibility is irrelevant and need not be considered.

Funding is at an absurdly low level in comparison with the economic importance of resource supply.

INTRODUCTION CERTAIN of the permanent magnet alloys provide ideal systems for the study of the kinetics of the precipitation reaction and the correlation of structure with properties. One such system, Cu-Ni-Fe, was found by Bradley1,2 to exhibit a coherent transition state in the precipitation process analogous to that reported for Al-Cu alloys somewhat earlier.3 The attractiveness of some permanent magnet alloys for study lies in the fact that vertical sections of the ternary phase diagram in certain regions of composition (Fig I) have as their prototype the binary Ni-Au diagram. Alloys of this type decompose into products that have the same crystal lattice type but only slightly different lattice parameters. The advantages that such alloy systems offer for study over the usual in which an intermetallic compound is formed are many: I. Since the precipitate has the same crystal structure as the matrix, complex atomic movements are not required to form the new lattice. 2. Similarly, complex orientation relationships are not involved for both the matrix and the precipitate would be expected to have the same orientation. 3. Small disregistry of the decomposition products at equilibrium (in contrast with Cu-Ag alloys) is conducive to extensive coherent growth in the transient state and thus the transition lattice can be detected by the usual X ray diffraction methods. 4. Finally, the relative quantities of precipitate and depleted matrix can be varied from o to 100 pct* thus permitting wide freedom for the study of the effect of composition on coherent growth and properties. In the Cu-Ni-Fe alloys of appropriate composition, the face-centered cubic precipitate and also the depleted matrix when first formed are coherent with the parent matrix.1,2 The two have the same [ao] parameter as the original matrix but they are both tetragonal; the precipitate has an axial ratio c/a < I while that of the depleted matrix is c/a > I. When coherency is lost they assume the normal face-centered cubic structure with the depleted matrix having a lattice parameter greater than the original matrix and that of the precipitate less. Such a mechanism would also be expected for Cu-Ni-Co alloys because of the similarity in constitution but this had not been demonstrated. The present investigation was conducted on a Cu-Ni-Co alloy. The constitution diagram and magnetic properties of these alloys have been fairly well established 4,5 however, no previous determinations of mechanism of precipitation and no correlation of structure with properties had been made. The results of wear on marked balls, 4, 31/2, 3, and 2 in. diam are given. All balls were forged steel of practically the same chemical analysis and hardness. The results indicate that balls in a given mill for a given length of time will have equal diameter losses, regardless of size.

In the Mitsubishi smelting furnace, copper concentrate, silica sand and water granulated slag from the converting furnace are injected through the process lances, together with oxygen enriched air, into the melt. Because bath smelting is used, the rates of particles/melt and gas/melt reactions are high enough and therefore tine grinding of the solid materials is&apos; not necessary. Among these reactions, the dissolution rate of silica sand is the slowest and limits the overall reactions in the smelting furnace. Information on the dissolution rate of silica sand plays an important role for design of a new furnace. Theoretical calculations of the dissolution rate .of silica particles have been reported elsewhere. The authors conducted cold model experiments and could verify the calculation. In this paper, the dependence of dissolution rates of particles on the gas blowing rate, particle size and solid penetration depth in the bath is discussed.

Copper concentrate is produced in Chile in the high Andes and transported to the coast for shipping through long distance pipelines. The pipeline and fittings installed have to withstand the high abrasion and corrosion environment of the copper concentrate. To protect the inside tube wall against corrosion, high density polyethylene (HDPE) liner is used. While HDPE liners can protect the steel wall against corrosion, it has also been assumed that the low surface roughness of the HDPE liner also inhibited incrustation caused by calcium carbonate and sulphate deposition. Recent events have indicated otherwise in a couple of concentrate pipelines for which BRASS has provided consultant service. This paper delivers a case study which includes (i) formation of incrustation and adhesion to HDPE liner, (ii) the detection of the incrustation through hydraulic analysis, (iii) the mechanism of removal of incrustation, and (iv) the catastrophic effects of their presence in an emergency situation.

"Solar generated power has long been considered a useful energy source only for low-energy density and non-mission critical use, such as providing electricity for residential applications. The success of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) facilities, such as the 64 MW Nevada Solar- 1 near Las Vegas, have demonstrated that solar does have application to high energy density industries such as materials and chemical production. This paper will discuss the current operating con_guration of the Solar-1 facility and show how proposed modi_cations, such as addition of thermal storage and use of liquid salts as the working uid, can further improve the e_ciency and energy production of the plant.IntroductionThe United States as a nation is the largest consumer of energy in the world at an estimated 29 trillion kWh per year[1], which is roughly 15% of total global energy consumption[2]. On a per capita basis, the United States also leads most of the world, using an average of 96,000 kWh per person[3]. Roughly 40% of the energy consumed in the United States was produced from petroleum, 23% from coal, 23% from natural gas, 9% from nuclear and the remaining 5% from renewable sources such as solar, geothermal, wind, and hydroelectric[1].Energy demands associated with the industrial-scale production of chemicals and materials is a signicant portion of the United States total energy consumption. Roughly 33% of the energy consumed in the United States is used by the industrial sector, with 22% of this amount used in chemical production, 16% used in petroleum rening, and 14% used in the smelting and rening of metals[1]. Energy costs are also a signicant, if not the most signicant, portion of the total production costs for many materials. For example, roughly 30% of the cost of producing aluminum is the electricity used in the Hall-Heroult process [4], while the cost of energy is roughly 15% of the total cost of producing steel products [5].The primary sources of power for the industrial sector have been coal, petroleum, hydro- electric and nuclear. The use of alternative energy sources, e.g. solar, wind, geothermal, for industrial materials production has been slow in coming because they are intermittent and low-energy density sources, i.e. no solar power at night, no wind power when the air is still, etc. The success of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) facilities, such as the 64 MW Nevada Solar-1 (NS-1) near Las Vegas, have demonstrated that solar can have application to high energy density industries such as materials and chemical production.This paper will discuss the current conguration of the NS-1 facility, and potential modications to the facility that will increase both its power e_ciency and power density."
