"Several industrial and government laboratories are of the opinion that solar--cell technology will grow into a billion-dollar industry by the year 2000, especially if oil prices rise again. Of the variety of materials that have been investigated as the major component of photovoltaic systems, silicon appears to have an outstanding advantage. The cost factor is the primary importance in photovoltaic development, since the technology to make silicon cells of acceptable efficiency and life time has existed since the early stage of the space program. Electrometallurgy is one of the low--cost processes for the production of silicon, since it allows direct, single-stage production from some abundant, inexpensive source materials such as silica and fluorosilicates. Among several systems, two are given particular attention, using inorganic baths with Si0 2 or K2SiF6 as the source of silicon respectively. They appear capable of development to commercial production. Conceptual designs of a commercial--scale cell for silicon production at temperatures above its melting point, and of a pilot' plant for plating silicon from an all-fluoride bath are presented. Energy ProspectsThe major changes in the world energy since the first energy crisis in 1970 have impacted on our community. When oil was $40 a barrel in the mid-1970s, we became obsessed with the energy conservation and a search for alternate energies. Even though the crude oil fell below $15 a barrel during the last several years, our energy security fears continue to haunt us. This time it is not the scarcity, but the abundance of foreign oil and the decline in the domestic production.The prospects of energy depends on the demand and supply of energy. These, in turn, depend on future energy prices, which are linked to economic factors, political events, and unforeseen circumstances. Although no one can predict the future with certainty, three energy consumption patterns used by the Ford Foundation are as shown in Fig. 1."

Further development of the Nitric-Sulfuric Leach (NSL) process has led to an improved design of the leach and nitric acid recovery steps. NO produced in the leach step is reacted with oxygen, regenerating N02, which is sparged directly into the leach reactor. Leaching is simplified to two steps and the nitric acid plant is replaced with an oxidation recycle gas sys-tem. Laboratory work substantiated the concept and led to selection of operating conditions. The lab work also pointed to improved process control compared to use of nitric acid as the sole oxidant. Recovery of copper from purified pregnant liquor is modified to use air agitation electrowinning improving cathode quality and lowering tankhouse costs. Economic evaluation shows reduction of capital requirements from $2400/AT to $2000/AT in 1978 dollars for 50,000 TPY of copper production.

The need for dimensionally stable filled polymer composites has spurred the quest for materials that possess a negative coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Finding minerals and materials with a negative CTE large enough to counteract the substantial CTE found in polymers proves challenging. Much research has been per-formed over the last decade to uncover various materials that possess this unusual behavior. A list of materials that have demonstrated negative properties are discussed, as well as the experimental use of one such material (ZrW2O8), in a polymer matrix composite. The ignition of chalcopyrite and pyrite was studied using laminar flow furnace and thermal analysis techniques which were supported by XRD and optical microscopic examination of the products. In air, chalcopyrite and pyrite ignited at temperatures of 400-500'C and 500-600?C respectively. The phase assemblages predicted from thermodynamic analyses were compared with those found by experiment, and the onset of ignition was correlated against changes in the phase compositions. Pyrite and chalcopyrite ignited when pyrrhotite and intermediate solid solution formed thus opening up the structure and allowing ready access of oxygen.

As part of its program of petroleum production research the Federal Bureau of Mines has long been engaged in the study and development of systems of analysis of oilfield waters (8, 12, 20, 21, 22, 27, 30).21 However, many of the early chemical procedures developed by the Bureau and widely adopted by the petroleum industry are time consuming, and some are unreliable for determining certain constituents found in California oilfield waters. Because of the need for more rapid and more accurate methods having greater sensitivity with low concentrations of some constituents, a study has been made by the Bureau's Petroleum Research Laboratory at San Francisco, in developing new techniques and modifying previously published techniques for analyzing oilfield waters by flame spectrophotometric, potentiometric, and colorimetric methods. Test solutions were synthesized for testing the suitability and accuracy of the procedures, and the effect of interfering ions. These solutions contained known quantities of characteristic constituents of oilfield waters including sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, lithium, strontium, barium, sulfate, chloride, bromide, iodide, carbonate, bicarbonate and borates in a wide range of concentrations. The compositions of these synthetic brines are listed in table 22. Many California oilfield waters contain salts of petroleum-derived organic acids and several synthetic oilfield waters also were prepared to which large quantities of naphthenates or salts of petroleum acids were added.

Utilities are using every technological tool at their disposal to find optimum solutions to challenges in every aspect of operations. In fuel planning and procurement, these tools include models that predict which dispatch line-up will comply with environmental regulations at minimum cost. This paper presents how those tools are being used for Duquesne Light Company.

The South African Mining, Extraction, Research, Development and Innovation (SAMERDI) strategy was launched in 2019 with the goal of modernizing the mining industry. It comprises three major research initiatives: improvement in the efficiency of extraction and health and safety in current mining operations, development of fully mechanized systems to mine narrow tabular ore bodies in hard rock, and development of extraction systems to break rock without using explosives. The crosscutting Advanced Orebody Knowledge (AOK) program seeks to develop and implement drilling and geophysical technologies that can characterize the rock mass ahead of mining and identify potentially hazardous geological features. This knowledge will be integrated with information derived from seismic monitoring. Mining methods, layouts and rock support systems will be adjusted accordingly to mitigate the risk of rockbursts. Boreholes are routinely drilled ahead of mine workings using diamond-impregnated bits. The drill core is logged to identify lithology and geological structures (especially dykes and faults that may be seismogenic), sample the ore body for grade control, and detect areas that may contain water and/or flammable gas. Methods and technology to improve the efficiency of drilling and maximize the information obtained from the drilling process, borehole core, and the borehole itself are being investigated. A range of geophysical technologies are being developed to map the rock mass from the skin of the excavation to a distance of several tens of meters. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is used to map the geometry of the excavation, including prominent joint, vein and fracture sets and the presence and performance of rock support elements and systems. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is used to penetrate deeper into the rock mass and image joints, fractures bedding planes that influence the stability of the hanging and side walls. Image processing techniques known as ‘seismic attributes’ are being applied to the radargrams to improve interpretation. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and various active and passive seismic techniques (e.g. Tunnel Seismic Profiling (TSP), ambient noise tomography) achieve even greater penetration into the rock mass. Finally, machine learning is used to improve the processing and interpretation of seismic and radar data.

The United States,-the largest nickel consumer in the world, produces virtually no nickel from domestic ores. Dependence upon outside nickel - sources and increasing strategic, importance of nickel focused the attention of the United States on deposits within its boundries. The most likely domestic sources of nickel are low-grade oxide and silicate deposits, such as the Cle Clum deposit, Kittitas County, Wash., and the Riddle deposit, Douglas County, Oreg. The Federal Bureau of Mines, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg. has been investigating electric smelting of low-grade oxide and silicate nickel ores. These smelting studies have been on selective reduction to produce low-carbon ferronickel. Selective reduction is based upon the relative reducibility of: nickel, iron, and chromium, in the order named, when the charge contains insufficient carbon or other reductants to reduce the entire quantity of these metals present in the ore.

The experimental study of nitrogen absorption and its removal from a liquid Ni-20%Cr alloy at 1873 K has been undertaken, using an experimental, apparatus based on the Sieverts technique in order to determine the solubility of nitrogen in the alloy. as well as the kinetics of nitrogen transfer across the gas/melt interface. Experiments show that nitrogen solute equilibrium content can be calculated using the Sievens law. Measurements point out the nitrogen absorption reaction rate to be well described by first order kinetics, whereas experiments on nitrogen removal reveal that the rate is better expressed using a second order equation.

THE property of Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, is in Dome township, Red Lake area, northwestern Ontario, a hundred miles north of Kenora and close to the Manitoba border. 'Planes of Canadian Pacific Air Lines, Limited, serve the district daily, except Sundays, from Kenora, Ontario, and Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, passengers being trans-ported from Winnipeg to Lac du Bonnet by car. Freight is handled by the Patricia Transportation Company. It is brought in from Hudson, Ontario, on the Canadian National railway, in summer by water and in winter by tractor trains over the frozen lakes. The first staking on the property was done during the 'rush' of 1926 and 1927 by William M. Cochenour, and on April 30th, 1928, a syndicate was formed, taking in claims of W. M. Cochenour and Dan Willans and H. G. Young. Surface trenching was carried on almost continuously until 1934. In October, 1932, Ventures Limited took an option on the property, and in December of that year they carried out an extensive diamond drilling programme, but considering the results did not justify further work, they relinquished the option. In July, 1934, further surface work was carried out under the supervision of W. P. Mackle and, on the strength of his report, Noah Timmins Incorporated took an option on the property and agreed to make an initial expenditure of $100,000 on development work. This was carried out under the direction of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines and included the sinking of a shaft to a depth of 165 feet, establishment of a level at the 150-foot horizon, and some 1,900 lineal feet of drifting and cross-cutting. The results obtained from this work were not considered of sufficient promise and the option was terminated in August, 1935. Mr. Cochenour then approached Alex Mackenzie and associates, and the present Company, Cochenour Willans Gold Mines, Limited, was organized on April 9th, 1936, and sufficient money was raised to continue operations. Under the direction of W. P. Mackle, the shaft was deepened and a second level was established at the 275-foot horizon; but, due to several adverse reports by outside engineers, it was found impossible to raise sufficient money to carry on the work and operations were suspended in December, 1937. In January, 1939, an agreement was entered into with Gold Eagle Gold Mines for the milling in their plant of some Cochenour ore. A total of 4,959 tons was treated, and the results were so encouraging that further finances were raised by C. A. Gentles & Company, of Toronto. Following further development in the mine, it was decided to erect a mill. Construction was started on September 1st and the mill was turned over on November 29th. The first gold brick was poured on December 23rd.

"This study was undertaken to provide a more adequate knowledge of the chemistry of the sulfide volatilization process for recovery of tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. The investigation was partly supported by the Department of State under its program for scientific cooperation with South American republics.The results of this investigation demonstrate the conditions under which cassiterite (Sn02) may be converted to stannous sulfide by reaction with pyrite or sulfur vapor. Quantitative data are given on the rate of sulfidization and on the vapor pressure of stannous sulfide.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the United States is the world's largest consumer of tin, virtually no tin ores occur within our national borders. Most of the world's tin supply comes from alluvial deposits in the Far East and in Africa, The major sources of tin ores are Malaya, Indochina, Bolivia, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Thailand, Burma, China, and the United Kingdom. Bolivia is the only important source of tin in the western hemisphere. It was the chief source of tin f or the United States during World War II. The Government-owned tin smelter at Texas City, Tex., was built primarily for smelting Bolivian ores and depends largely on Bolivian ores for its operation. Bolivia is the only major tin-producing country in which the tin ores occur as vein or lode deposits requiring underground mining. Most of the tin from the Far East and Africa is mined by dredges from alluvial or placer depos its. It is recovered as a high-grade concentrate of cassiterite relatively free from impurities. The tin minerals in the lode deposits are more intimately associated with other minerals and more difficult to separate into a clean concentrate. Furthermore, a large part of the tin in the original ore is lost during concentration. The ores as mined contain only a few percent of tin, so they must be milled to separate the gangue minerals and produce a concentrate containing 30 to 40 percent tin before they are shipped to the smelter. The losses of tin that occur during milling vary from 18 to 65 percent. The average recovery of tin from Bolivian ores is probably 50 to 60 percent."

This study highlights the significant presence of submicrometer- sized airborne particles in underground coal mines, especially around the belt conveyor drift areas. Using realtime instruments and gravimetric samplers, the assessment revealed that particle concentrations were notably higher in the belt entry compared to other locations, with a strong presence of submicrometer- and nanoparticle-sized dust. The study’s findings emphasize the importance of addressing small particle exposure, as these particles, composed of harmful substances like calcium, copper and iron, can pose serious health risks to miners. This research emphasizes the importance of improving air exposure estimation through more effective monitoring and characterization techniques to better understand and reduce workers’ exposure to hazardous airborne particles in the mining environments.

Due to pricing volatility and lack of availability of metals, the use of non-metallic materials of construction in metal extraction and refining processes has increased significantly in recent years Even though costs and availability of metals has improved recently, these factors are not expected to continue into the future as metal supplies once again fall short of global demand. One of the most common non-metallic materials of construction used in metal extraction and refining processes today is Fiberglass- Reinforced Plastic (FRP). These processes often require materials of construction that can resist acids and high concentrations of acid chloride salts. As shown in Table 1, FRP based on epoxy vinyl ester resin has the same chemical resistance to acid and better resistance to acid chloride salts than alloy C-276 and is superior to 2205 stainless steel in both cases.

The Pt-based alloys have a high potential for replacing some Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) used in the highest temperature and most aggressive environments, and vanadium would be a beneficial alloying element. Six alloys of average compositions Pt-26.6Al-9.1V, Pt-23.1Al-17.8V, Pt-9.6Al-21.1V, Pt-17.4Al-6.4V, Pt-22.3Al-7.9V, and Pt-6.0Al-10.1V (all in at.%) were manufactured by arc-melting and examined in the as-cast condition using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five samples were heat treated at 1 000°C for 1 500 hours and water quenched, then examined. The phases were identified using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and the identities were confirmed by XRD. In most of the samples, the phases existing in the as-cast condition were different from those at 1 000°C after ~1500 hours heat treatment. A solidification projection, an isothermal section and a liquidus surface projection were determined for the Pt-rich corner.

The approach to risk management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate delivery of a project. The NZ$1.4 B Waterview Connection project is the largest and most complex project yet undertaken by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and the procurement process for an alliance contract was refined to provide compliance with the International Tunnel Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP). The principle of shared risk within an alliance incentivises a common understanding of project risks prior to finalising the alliance agreement and therefore enables superior risk management through design, construction and beyond. Risk management practices need to be instigated well in advance of commercial phases, so that commercial competition does not lead to a significant elevation of project risk. In particular the practice of gaining commercial advantage by taking on a potentially unmanageable level of risk is one of the outcomes to be avoided by the TCoP.During the procurement phase the NZTA placed high value on design and construction mitigation measures proposed in order to address ground risks, as is appropriate for a major tunnel project. In order to achieve alignment on the level of geotechnical risks an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline Report (AGBR) process was developed.This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. Hydrometallurgical zinc winning processes ?are frequently based on iron containing concentrates which yield a goethite, jarosite or hematite residue. Jarosite or goethite are mostly stored in waste ponds which ,are lined with foil. Water percolating through the pond is withdrawn from the deposit ,and decontaminated before discharge. Despite these measures, more and more pressure is put upon zinc companies to treat their (historical) residues and to produce environmentally acceptable residues. The criterion which determines this acceptability is the potentiality of leaching out hazardous elements by natural processes. This paper provides the comparison of five different process designs for integrated jarosite treatment in a hydrometallurgical zinc winning plant leading to environmentally acceptable residues. The processes are esigned for producing 200 ktons/yr zinc and for treating 80 ktonslyr historical jarosite. Mass and energy balances are used to determme parameters such as: the energy use per ton waste treated and the amount and composition of final residues. The conclusion of the work is that. pyrometallurgical jarosite treatment integrated in hydrometallurgical zinc winning is preferable to hydrometallurgical jarosite treatment. Integrated pyrometallurgical processes lead to a ?smaller quantity of remaining hazardous residues and require less energy.

Mine planning is a crucial part of all mining industry projects, and nowadays, geometallurgical mapping through advanced computer technologies provides an opportunity to involve metallurgical responses of a deposit into 3D block model in order to optimise mine planning activities, especially for production forecasting. Including these metallurgical parameters apart from traditional geology and grade-based attributes into resource modelling leads to an extensive approximation for the economic maximisation of mine production due to better forecasting, planning and increasing certainty and the reliability of the resource model (Macfarlane and Williams, 2014). Commonly, geostatistical techniques and algorithms are used to produce models with the high resolution (Brissette et al. 2014; Deutsch et al. 2014; Tolosana-Delgado et al. 2015). The accuracy of the modelling procedure deeply depends on a reliable block model, produced by spatial analysis of corresponding variables that define the geological, metallurgical, mineralogical and chemical behaviour of the deposit. However, there are special cases, where the application of enhanced geostatistical methods is required, to solve the occurred difficulties between variables with multivariate complexities. For example, in oxide copper deposits, the soluble copper grade is a percentage of total copper grade and recoverable by heap leaching processes (Emery, 2012; Hosseini and Asghari, 2015). "Severe drilling conditions and difficult mud problems are briefly out-lined as the major cost items in all production operations. The chief problems discussed are abnormal pressures, high temperature, trouble-some shales, and low rates of penetration. These problems have been eliminated or greatly reduced in many areas by• the proper application of recently developed drilling mud products and techniques. These severe problems and their solutions are discussed generally: the application of high-density weighting materials to overcome abnormal pressures; surfactant muds with sodium polyacrylate as a solution for deep and high-temperature drilling; shale control muds and new dispersants for severe shale problems; and low-solids emulsions and •extreme-pressure lubricants for greatly improved rates of penetration."

The agriculture industry has made great strides during the past decade to increase agriculture yields through increased use of fertilizers. Increased use of fertilizers may prevent or at least delay mass starvation due to the alarming increase in world population. Phosphate was added to soil as a plant nutrient in the forms of calcined bones at least 2 000 years ago, (1) and man has used phosphate minerals as a source of fertilizers in one form or another for at least 100 years. During 1977 the world produced about 116 million metric tons of phosphate rock, with about 86% used for fertilizers and another 4% for animal feed supplements. More than three-fourths of the total production comes from the United States, Morocco, and the Soviet Union. From a mineral beneficiation point of view, the major sources of phosphate rock and the methods of beneficiation can be classified as follows. Marine deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, marine deposits requiring a francolite carbonate mineral separation, igneous deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, and igneous deposits, requiring an apatite carbonate mineral separation.

Introduction The property of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company is on the east side of Howe sound, some twenty miles north of-Vancouver. The camp is served by two settlements, one at Britannia Mines townsite, approximately three miles from the water's edge at an altitude of 2,100 feet, the other at Britannia Beach, on Howe sound. The first discovery of copper ore on the property was made in 1888, but it was not until 1905 that production started. From that year until the end of 1944, production had totalled 732,414,420 pounds of copper and 261,126 ounces of gold from six orebodies, known as the Victoria, Empress, No. 5, Fairview, Bluff, and Jane. No. 8 orebody, with which this paper is concerned, was discovered in 1937 by diamond drilling from the 4100 level, some 300 feet above sea level. Development of this orebody to the end of 1944 had included the sinking of a shaft from the 4000 to the 5250 level, and a limited amount of stoping. This work has delimited the orebody from the 3800 to the 4950 level and has indicated upwards of 1,000,000 tons of copper-zinc-gold ore. It is planned to commence production in the near future, while continuing exploration of the orebody at depth.
