"IntroductionThrough an extensive coal sampling project in the Sydney coalfield of Nova Scotia during 1981 - 1984 involving a majority of the mineable coals (Zodrow, 1985, Fig. 1), a sizeable inventory on trace, minor and major metals was established. In this paper, results of studying the inventory are summarized, concentrating mainly on the relationship that exists between metal variations and thickness of coal channel samples (i.e. trends) and on explaining the trends in geochemical and sedimentological terms. As an over-all conclusion the Everglades peat of Florida is proposed as a modern-day analogue to Upper Carboniferous peat swamp development that took place in the Sydney Basin.Data InventoryFor this study 17 channel samples were cut , 8 cm to 14 cm channel width and 8 cm to 10 cm depth, from 10 successive coals which in stratigraphically descending order are as follows: Point Aconi (3), overrider Lloyd Cove (2), Lloyd Cove (2), Stubbart (2), Harbour (4), Backpit (I), Phalen (,I), Shoemaker (1) and McAulay (I), where bracketed values signify the number of channel samples cut from a seam (Zodrow, 1985, Fig. I). Each channel sample was subdivided by 15 em incremental length yielding a total sample size of 137 for analysis. By appropriate modern techniques these samples were analyzed to determine concentration levels for 32 chemical elements and ash content, the average results of which are presented in Table 1.Tests were also made for Pd, Pt, Ga, Nb, Cd, Cs, Sm and W but their concentration levels in many instances hovered on the lower detection limits that were used and on this accounts are excluded from discussion. Ashing, when necessary for the determination of concentration levels, was done for 12 hours at a temperature not exceeding 450°C. Concentration levels for the elements are reported in reference to whole-coal or whole-coal equivalents and discussed on this basis. In the course of the analyses, lower detection limits received careful attention."

Motivated by safety considerations, logistical issues, transportation cost savings, product diversification, and marketing preferences, several uranium producers are revisiting their business models and supply chain configuration and, instead of selling dried yellowcake to downstream refineries, they are moving to build in-house calcining facilities. Drying and calcining plants are relatively low-cost facilities to build and operate. The execution period of a typical yellowcake drying and calcining project is also relatively short and alternative construction methodologies, such as modularized solutions, are available. The drying and calcining technologies used for yellowcake are relatively mature, environmentally contained, and well supported by qualified vendors. The drying and calcining circuits also seamlessly integrate with upstream and downstream operations. These either produce a dried yellowcake or calcined U3O8 which are notably safer and easier to transport and market. This paper presents an overview of the recommended technology and project development considerations for yellowcake drying and calcining facilities.

Stress -induced ordering of carbon atoms is studied in a series of Fe-Mn-C alloys. A prominent peak is found in the vicinity of 280°C at frequencies of the order of 1.0 cps, with an associated activation energy of 37 kcal per mole. The height of the peak is linearly rekzted to the concentration of carbon in solution. The distortion of octahedral holes by manganese atoms appears to be predominant over carbon-carbon pair interactions. RELAXATION by stress-induced ordering of point defects is expected whenever the introduction of these point defects produces distortions which have a lower symmetry than that of the lattice. Under zero stress, the isolated point defects occupy the crystallographic-ally equivalent positions in the lattice, as these represent states of equal energy. However, if the defect sites are asymmetric, application of an uniaxial stress will split the energy states, and a redistribution of the defects among various states will take place. This is the case of the internal friction peak called the Snoek peak,1 resulting from isolated interstitials in bcc metals. The interstitial sites in this case have tetragonal symmetry. In the case of fcc and hcp lattices, such an effect is not expected from isolated point defects because of the symmetrical nature of the interstitial sites. However, internal friction peaks arising from interstitial diffusion have been reported both in hcp2,3 and fcc4-8 lattices. These peaks are often explained on the basis of stress-induced ordering of interstitial solutes, caused by the deviation of interstitial sites from their cubic symmetry through the presence of nearby defects. In the case of fcc lattices, evidence for interactions of both the substitutional-interstitial4,6,13 and interstitial-interstitial types5'798'14 have been presented by various investigators. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the internal friction peak attributed to the diffusion of interstitial carbon atoms in high purity austenitic manganese steels and to account for the peak in the light of the existing models. MATERIALS The Fe-Mn-C alloys used in the present investigation were made in two different ways, designated as Type I and Type 11. Type I alloys were made from high purity Fe-Mn alloys obtained in the form of 0.04- in.-diam wires from Materials Research Corporation, Orangeburg, N.Y. These alloys were carburized to different levels using gas mixtures of H2 and CH4 at 1000°C. Type I1 alloys were made in this laboratory starting with zone refined iron, spectrographically pure manganese, and spectrographically pure carbon. They were melted in an argon arc melting furnace and drawn into 0.04-in.-diam wires. All the wires were annealed at about 900°C for 3 hr prior to the internal friction experiments. After the measurements of internal friction, the phases in the samples were identified by X-ray diffraction and the carbon determined by the combustion method. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In the present work, a classical Ke-type pendulum was used. The details of the equipment were described previously by D. T. Peters.9 Dry helium at 40 torr was used in all the experiments. The internal friction, measured as the logarithmic decrement of the torsion amplitude of vibration was determined as a function of temperature, from ambient to about 500°C. The background internal friction was assumed to have the form of the exponential of the inverse temperature and was subtracted from the raw data. The height of the peak was measured at the position of the maximum in the plot of the internal friction versus temperature. The activation energies of the peaks were measured by the peak shift method. The internal friction values for an alloy were obtained as a function of temperature at different frequencies of vibration. The position of the peak changes with frequency, the higher the frequency the higher the peak temperature. The activation energy of the process associated with the peak is obtained using the formula

Book Review MAN-TO-MAN: THE STORY OF INDUSTRIAL DEMOCRACY. By John Leitch, Phila¬delphia, Pa. The B. C. Forbes Publishing Co., New York, 1919, 2.19 pp., 7 1/2 X 5 in. $2.00. "Man to Man" is a short, well-written, well-printed, easy to read and very interesting hook. It is an account of a method introduced into more than twenty industrial plants to give the workers a share in managing their own troubles. It is not a panacea for labor troubles and strikes, but neither have existed where the new method has been tried. The scheme is, in a word, to organize the working force like the government, having a cabinet composed of the executives, a senate composed of foremen, and a house composed of men elected by fellow workers from all departments. This governing machinery takes up all complaints of workers, investigates, reports, and settles. The increased profits due to economy and increased production from this cooperation are divided 50-50 between the company and the men. Experience has shown that, since inattention, tardiness, irregularity, and inefficiency tend to reduce their profits, all men very quickly, after once convinced of the sincerity of the management in their scheme of cooperation, eliminate them because it is for their personal profit. Astonishing results have been attained, including higher wages, greater output, lower unit costs, great reduction in labor turnover, elimination of waste, an increased loyalty and a waiting list of employees even in periods of labor shortage. Profit sharing as such and stock ownership as a benefit to industrial relations are discussed briefly and illuminatingly, although they are not believed by the author to he the best way to bring about the human relation between those who work,for and those who work with money. The author is not against unions but does not believe the union is the best medium for improving industrial relationship. The look is nowhere dogmatic but is always forceful and convincing and, being well written, is very entertaining. It is doubtful if "Industrial Democracy" is the right expression for the solution of the problem but certainly anything that will place on the shoulders of labor some of the responsibility of industry and will increase production is tine much-to-be-desired desideratum. It is a. contribution to the solution of our biggest problem and should be read by everyone who employs men and who has been worried by the labor turnover. P. E. B.

In designing very large excavated slopes which are becoming increasingly common in both mining and civil engineering projects, the most important decision of the engineer is the selection of a slope angle. The purpose of the geotechnical study of the slope is to ensure reasonable stability of the slope in the most economical way. Because the rock mass composing each slope is unique, there are no standard solutions for slope stability analysis. A practical solution is formulated from the basic geologic data, engineering properties of the rock, geometry of the slope, and ground water observations. Stability analysis consists of analyzing the forces causing and resisting slope failure. There are several methods of slope stability analysis. The limit equilibrium method evaluates the overall stability of the sliding mass just on the verge of slip, using some or all of the three equations of static equilibrium of a plane problem. The stress-strain relationships of the rock mass are not considered. Method of analysis include the assumption of the shape of the slip surface. Peterson (10) introduced the Swedish method of analysis in 1916, which is based on cylindrical sliding surfaces. Fellenius (4) in 1926 extended this method and introduced the method of slices. This method was refined by Bishop (I) in 1955 and later used by Morgenstern and Price (8) in 1965. In many cases layers of extremely soft strata or strata weakened by neutral stress cause failure to take place by translation along plane of weakness instead of by rotation on a circular surface. In this paper, a slope with a horizontal layer of weak meterial is selected for analysis. This is a usual case for open pit lignite mines where lignite seam may be non-cohesive and 'weaker than the overburden rock or a soft clay layer underlies the seam. It is also a common case of rock fill dams supported on a foundation stratum of clay where the strength of the clay layer is less than that of the rock fill. It is shown that utilizing this method, the location of potential failure surface and the value of the minimum factor of safety can be calculated directly and the trial computations of factors of safety for a number of assumed failure surfaces are not necessary.

Excessive production of reactive oxygen radicals by alveolar macrophages is proposed to play an important role in oxidative lung injury. A major product of oxygen radical formation is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (•OH) generated via a biologic Fenton reaction. In addition to its known ability to induce lipid peroxidation, recent studies have suggested that the •OH may exert its cytotoxic effect through the alteration of [Ca2+], homeostasis. To test this potential mechanism as well as to investigate the relationship between •OH and Ca" overloading in cytotoxic injury, isolated rat alveolar macrophages were exposed to externally generated radical system, H2O2 (0.01 to 1 mM) and Fe (1 mM) and their [Ca2+] levels and cell injury were monitored using quantitative fluorescence microscopy with the aid of the specific Ca" indicator, Fura-2, and membrane integrity indicator, propidium iodide. Electron spin resonance measurements using the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) confirmed the production of the .OH radical by this system. Upon the addition of the radicals, the macrophages displayed a rapid initial rise in [Ca2+] which was followed by a slower but more pronounced [Ca2+], elevation that reached a level 3 to 5 times higher than the basal level. This process preceded cell death as evident by nuclear propidium iodide fluorescence. Depletion of extracellular Ca" inhibited both the [Ca2+], response and cell injury. Preincubation of the cells with the Ca" channel blocker verapamil or .0H radical scavenger mannitol similarly inhibited the [Ca2+], rise and loss of viability. Firefly luciferase assay of cellular ATP content demonstrated that the alterations in [Ca2+], following .0H treatment preceded the depletion of ATP. Changes in membrane potential caused by Na* substitution with K* had no significant effect on either the unstimulated or stimulated [Ca"], levels. Taken together, these measurements indicate that .OH-induced injury in alveolar macrophages is associated with the alteration in [Ca2+], homeostasis. The mechanism of •OH-induced [Ca2+] loading is not due to nonspecific membrane damage or energy depletion, but mainly due to an increase in Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ selective channels. This Ca2+ over-load state as well as energy depletion caused by the oxidant may activate certain cellular degradative processes leading to cell injury and death.

The mechanics of filtration are described by a theoretical-empirical nonlinear diffusion equation which, under certain circumstances, may,be linearized and then solved explicitly. For filtration under static conditions linearization leads to a boundary value problem analogous to a heat flow problem with a known explicit solution. The corresponding solution for static filtration is compared with published experimental data. Under dynamic conditions filtration takes place in three successive stages. During each of these the rate of filtration and/or the thickness of the filter cake are different functions of the filtration time. The proposed mechanism explains the observed high resistance of dynamically deposited filter cakes against erosion and also the connection between filtration rate and viscosity of the drilling fluid. Several of the quantities governing dynamic filtration have no counterpart in the static filtration mechanism. The static filtration rate is, therefore, not a reliable measure for the dynamic rate and vice versa. INTRODUCTION Filtration under simulated borehole conditions, i.e.. either from a static suspension or from a suspension flowing parallel to the filter cake (dynamic filtration), has been the subject of several laboratory studies.1-7 This experimental and theoretical work showed that many aspects of the filtration mechanism cannot be explained by an elementary filtration theory based on the assumption that the filter cake is incompressible. For a more satisfactory theory compressibility should be taken into account. This has been done. at least to some extent, in the filtration theory developed for the chemical industry. Surveying the literature (see Ref. 8 for a bibliography) it becomes apparent that, although several properties of filter cakes deposited from many different suspensions have been measured, including compressibility, the filtration equations are essentially empirical in nature. No attempt has been made, for instance, to develop filtration theory along the lines of consolidation theory.12 This theory, upon which a highly successful development in soil mechanics rests, would appear to be an excellent starting point for a filtration theory since the compressibility concept is an essential part of it. As we will use this theory in the following development it is well to state the four assumptions on which it is based: 1. The fluid flow through a compressible porous medium is governed by Darcy's law. 2. The rate of change in fluid content of an element of the porous medium is proportional to the rate of change of solid pressure between the particles. 3. The solid particles are incompressible within the range of pressures considered. 4. The total pressure on a surface normal to the line of flow is equal to the sum of the fluid pressure and the pressure between the particles (solid pressure) at that surface. To calculate the rate of filtration and other quantities of interest it is necessary to know the filter cake compressibility and the permeability as a function of the solid pressure. It has not been possible to calculate these functions from theoretical considerations and they will therefore be introduced in this paper as empirical expressions. Both are determined in a compression cell where the cake is subjected to a mechanical load. Permeability and compressibility are measured after the solid pressure has stabilized, i.e., after the excess fluid pressure has been dissipated and the uniform pressure is transmitted entirely by the solids. The permeability and compressibility thus determined are not the same as during filtration in the borehole, under either static or dynamic conditions, because then, due to frictional drag, the solid pressure and hence also the permeability and compressibility vary along a line normal to the direction of the mean flow and can only be defined locally. DERIVATION OF THE FILTRATION EQUATION FOR COMPRESSIBLE FILTER CAKES As the filter cake in the borehole is thin compared to the radius of the hole the filtration may be considered as linear. DR . JOHN A . CHURCH, in his treatise on the Comstock Locle 1 gave a full and clear account of the conditions of the mine during the period of greatest activity. The difficulties in the way of deep mining at that time were excessive water and high temperature. The drainage of the mines taxed the financial resources of the mining companies, and the high temperatures restricted the capacity of the miners for underground labor. In spite of these difficulties exploratory work was continued until the financial burden of removing the water became too great. The companies then restricted the work to the upper levels. The years 1883 to 1886 marked the period of cessation of deep mining. For 12 years thereafter mining was confined to the levels above the Sutro tunnel; and, while the question of drainage was more or less agitated, nothing of importance was done until the formation of the Comstock Pumping Association in 1898. Since that time successive levels have been drained until, at present, on the north-end mines, a depth of 700 ft. below the Sutro-tunnel level has been reached. Mining is now carried on in the Ophir mine from the 1,700- to the 2,200-ft. levels, and a winze is being sunk to make connection with the 2,300-ft. level (the 2,450 ft. of the C. & C. shaft). In 1903-the Ward Shaft Association was formed to undertake the draining of the Central and Gold Hill group of mines, and at the present time a depth of 2,500 ft. has been reached in the Ward shaft. The situation at the Ward looks promis¬ing, and the 3,000-ft. level may be reached in the near future. It is proposed to establish a large pumping-station on this level, and then begin the opening of known ore-bodies and the prospecting for new ones. The main factors which have contributed to the successful solution of the drainage problem are the Sutro tunnel, the use of the hydraulic elevator as a sinking-pump, the concentration of pumping-units, and cheap electrical power. The question of high temperature and its control still remains as a minor but important problem. The temperatures encountered in the new workings are as great as those in the earlier periods. The Comstock was considered the hottest group of mines in the world, and I am not aware of similar conditions in any other mining-district. A water-temperature as high as 160° F. has been reported from the Ward shaft, and temperatures below the Sutro tunnel are very high in many instances.

"Aiming at the development of more effective recycling processes, dissolution behavior of rhodium into molten slag was investigated. Using a pure rhodium crucible and Na2O-SiO2 slag system, equilibration experiments were carried out for 18 h at 1423-1623 K under various oxygen partial pressures of 0.005-1 atm with varied slag basicity. Rhodium solubility increased with increasing oxygen potential, slag basicity, and temperature. Rhodium dissolved into slag as rhodate ion ([RhO2]-) by the endothermic reaction: Rh(s) + 3/4O2(g) + 1/2O2-(in slag) = [RhO2]-(in slag). In the dissolution reaction, the “rhodate capacity” of slag is newly-defined. The correlation between rhodate capacity and optical basicity is reported.IntroductionDue to its high chemical resistance and outstanding catalytic properties, rhodium (Rh), one of the platinum group metals (PGMs), is utilized in various applications such as catalysts, molten glass vessels and containers, and electronic devices. Owing to the rarity of Rh resources in nature, recycled Rh from scraps such as spent automobile catalytic converters is currently considered as an important source of Rh supply [1]. According to the recycling practices, Rh is currently mainly recovered from scraps along with other PGMs such as platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd) by a dry process (e.g., smelting), a wet process (e.g., leaching and subsequent separation of PGMs from aqueous solution), or a combination of both processes [2]-[4]. Among these processes, smelting is commonly applied because PGMs can be effectively separated from a relatively large amount of various impurities coexisting in scraps. In the smelting process, Rh and other PGMs are collected in the collector metal (e.g., iron and copper), and impurities in scraps are removed into slag [4]-[6]. The process may be carried out at a temperature range of 1573-1973 K, in either an oxidizing or reducing atmosphere. Due to the high oxidation resistance at high temperatures, Rh is expected to be collected efficiently in the metal collector rather than being oxidized and forming RhOx in a molten slag. However, Rh loss into slag does occur in this process [7]."

"Mercury in flue gas of coal-fired plants was concerned as another serious pollution when sulfur dioxide pollution was controlled now. The adsorbent made from fly ash by thermal precipitation sulfur to remove mercury in fuel gas from coal combustion plant, SEM, BET, TGA and other measurement methods were used to characterize the effect on surface morphology, sulfur distribution and specific surface. High temperature deposition furnace was applied to increase sulfur content in fly ash based adsorbents produced in lab. The study found that sulfur attached to the adsorbent surface, mesopore and microporous structure, increasing its sulfur content of adsorbent. Sulfur was filled in interspace as small molecule S2, S5, increased their surface area and enhanced their adsorption capacity. The specific surface area increased by thermal precipitation sulfur, and specific surface area which increased with increasing temperature.1. IntroductionThe mercury emission caused by human activity has accounted for 10%-30% of total mercury emission all over the world[11, and the emission from coal-fired power plant have a huge proportion of these emission caused by human activity. Active carbon microstructure and surface morphology play an important role in its adsorption capability, which offers the potential for controlling environmental pollutant, such as sewage, fuel gas, atmosphere and et al [2,31, because it is a material with high specific surface area that long been considered as an excellent adsorbent. At present, include activated carbon, fly ash, calcium-based sorbents and other novel adsorbents. The adsorption capacity and production cost were very important in the process of mercury removal by adsorbents, so the mercury removal has focus on developing adsorbents of highly-efficient. In particular, the waste of metallurgical from coal combustion and the others have a significant advantage about the cost, and they have the highly-efficient in mercury removal after modified to enhance their adsorption capacity, such as fly ash of coal-fired. Apart from specific surface area, element content, pore structure, and surface morphology of activated carbon have great effect on its adsorption ability. Compared to adsorbents without modification, active carbon impregnated with other elements, such as chlorine, sulfur, bromine and et al. had more excellent characteristics to remove specific pollutants."

The stability and permanence of any structural material used in aircraft are of paramount importance. The spontaneous hardening, or age-hardening, which takes place in some of the aluminum alloys under ordinary conditions of temperature and atmosphere, is accompanied by an increase in tensile strength and proportional limit and a decrease in elongation or ductility. Within the last few years the introduction of a number of strong and ductile casting alloys led to a study by the Materiel Division, Air Corps, of the permanence of the physical properties in several of these alloys. It has been found that even though some alloys have good properties directly after casting or heat treatment, they are not satisfactory for stressed parts that require a combination of strength and ductility. It has also led to the conclusion that all alloys that can be hardened by artificial aging—heating in a temperature range below 170" C. (340" F.)—will harden spontaneously if allowed to stand for a sufficient length of time. It follows that, in aircraft work where the factors of safety are limited on account of the necessity of keeping the weight of the structures as low as possible consistent with their safe operation, the properties of the alloys in the stable or final condition should be used as a basis for design rather than the properties obtained on the material directly after casting. The work of Wilm in Germany, Hanson and Gayler at the National Physical Laboratory in England, and Merica, Jeffries, and others in the United States, has shown that the spontaneous hardening is characteristic to a greater or less extent in all aluminum-base alloys in which the solubility in the solid state of the alloying constituents decreases with the temperature. It has been shown that, by heating to a temperature as near as possible to the melting point of the material and soaking at that temperature for a sufficient length of time and then quenching or cooling rapidly, a maximum amount of the soluble constituents can be retained in solution and the condition of maximum hardening effect upon aging can be obtained. Also, in ordinary sand and chill castings, without heat treatment, a sufficient amount of the alloying constituents is held in solution to cause important changes in the final physical properties.

"Magnesite is a major mineral resource in China, whose output and export are massive and quite important to the world. Flotation performances of eight anionic collectors on magnesite were studied to find the proper ones. Micro-flotation results indicated that collectors of HOl, SDBS and AEP had outstanding flotation performances on magnesite, with the recovery ratio all reaching above 90% in a wide range of alkaline pulp. Solution chemistry calculation, Zeta potential and FTIR measurements were employed to reveal the interaction mechanism between anionic collectors and magnesite surfaces. Solution chemistry analysis indicated that the main active components of HOl, SDBS and AEP were anions and association complex anions in alkaline pulp. Magnesite surface was negatively charged in the alkaline pulp. The active sites on magnesite surface were mainly the components of MgOH-, Mg (OH)2, and MgCO3 when the pulp pH was over 8. Anionic components of HOl, SDBS and AEP reacted with Mg in magnesite surface to make the insoluble anionic salts. And the chemical adsorption was confirmed by the FTIR measurement evidences.INTRODUCTIONAs an important industrial mineral, magnesite has been widely applied in metallurgy, building materials, chemical industry, agro-pasturage and other fields (Hu et al., 2006). It is a major mineral resource in China with abundant reserves. Its output and export are massive and quite important to the world. Liaoning province is rich in magnesite, whose reserves and production both come first in China. So far the proven reserves have reached 2.91 billion tons, accounting for more than 90% of total reserves in China, and more than 25% in the world (Li et al., 2012).Magnesite ores in Liaoning province mainly contain crystalline magnesite, and the gangue minerals of quartz, dolomite, talc, tremolite, chlorite and carbonaceous materials. Some ores also contain a little pyrite, chalcopyrite, hematite and apatite. Most of the ores must be preprocessed to separate the useful parts from the large amount of gangue minerals, so that their value and industrial application can be enlarged and promoted.Flotation is commonly used to process the magnesite ores, and the conventional flotation methods include anionic and cationic flotation. In the former, gangue minerals of silicates were separated by using amine type cationic collectors. After the impurity minerals were removed, high qualified magnesite concentration could be gained. For the cationic flotation method, it had some drawbacks of lower recovery ratio and poor performance in the lower temperature pulp (Li et al., 1995)."

"Drilled shaft foundations are widely used for many types of structures, especially for highway bridges, high rise buildings, and costal structures. The lateral design considerations are crucial for those structures that are subjected to lateral thrust forces, winds, waves, and earthquakes. The p-y analysis is the most widely used method for the analysis and design of drilled shafts for lateral load applications in soils. However, existing p-y criteria were developed based on the lateral load tests on small diameter drilled shafts in soils. Although, a lot of lateral load tests have been conducted, there are a limited number of lateral load tests on large diameter drilled shafts embedded in clay. In this paper, a lateral load test on 2.44 m diameter fully instrumented drilled shafts in clay is presented. The site specific p-y curves are derived based on strain gage readings. The existing p-y curves are found to be much softer than the site specific p-y curves. Correspondingly, the deflection at the top of the test shaft under the maximum applied load is predicted to be eight times larger than the measured value using existing p-y criteria. A new p-y criterion is proposed in this paper. The proposed p-y criterion is proven to be able to capture the site specific p-y curves of the load test and to predict closely the deflections at the top of the test shaft. "In this study, hydraulic conductivity (K) geostatistics were used to predict residence time distribution of well-to-well flow. Flow profiles, fracture density measurements, and pumping tests were available from the highly fractured Florence Copper in situ leaching site. The flow profiles were used to establish the statistical distribution and spatial autocorrelation of K. Two tests were used for validation. The first test confirmed that fracture density and K are autocorrelated over similar length scales. In the second test, Monte Carlo flow simulations successfully recreated the results of pumping tests. Flow sim¬ulations were used to stochastically model well-to-well residence time distribution. RÉSUMÉ Dans cette étude, nous utilisons la géostatistique de la conductivité hydraulique (K) pour prévoir la distribution des temps de séjour (DTS) de l’écoulement entre les puits. Des profils de l’écoulement, des mesures de la densité des fractures et des essais de pompage existaient pour le site fortement fracturé de lixiviation in situ de Florence Copper. Les profils de l’écoulement ont permis d’établir la distribution statistique et l’autocorrélation spatiale de K. In situ leach modelling requires forecasting the residence time distribution (RTD) of flow between wells. In fractured formations such as copper porphyry deposits, order-of-magnitude variations in hydraulic conductivity (K) can result in highly channeled flow, resulting in a heavy tailed RTD (Becker & Shapiro, 2003; Kang, Le Borgne, Dentz, Bour, & Juanes, 2015). Channeling through preferential pathways has impacted copper recovery at several past in situ leaching field tests (Cathles, Glenn, Lenzi, Nigrini, Deans, & Huff, 1978; Ahlness & Pojar, 1983; Schmidt, Earley, & Friedel, 1994; Sinclair & Thompson, 2015). The aim of this work is to combine multiple types of hydrogeological measurements to stochastically forecast the well-to-well RTD in fractured rock for the purposes of copper in situ leach modelling."

Updating the openpit vehicle transportation network has the problem of being time consuming and low precision. To address this problem, a high-precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in openpit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3+C (DeepLabv3+Concat) is presented, and the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3+C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the openpit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicles meeting in openpit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy is proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in openpit mines. At the end of the study, vehicle running simulation was carried out on the road network model using Unity, a 3D visualization simulation software. The high-precision unmanned road network model of openpit mines studied in this work can further promote the construction and development of smart mines by acting as a high-precision map for unmanned vehicles.

The effect of oxalic acid, acetic acid, citric acid and EDTA on extraction of Cr (?) in soils contaminated by chromium- containing slag was investigated using a batch of incubation experiment. The results show that the pH value decreases more obvious with the increase of the amount of organic acid. The amount of Cr (?) extracted increases with increasing the amount of organic acid. When the ratio of organic acids to total Cr was 5:1, citric acid revealed the highest extraction effectiveness, followed by EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid, respectively. The amounts of Cr(?) extracted by citric acid, EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid increased by 439%, 244%, 215% and 162%.

Prior to 1911 the literature on melting brass by electricity consisted entirely-save for some suggestions made in patent literature but not actually worked out-of a few observations by farseeing men ' on the theoretical advantages of melting brass and other nonferrous alloys in electric furnaces. Roeber was the first to see and clearly state the possible advantages of the electric furnace in brass melting. The same factors tha.t make it desirable to manufacture special steels in the electric furnace rather than in crucibles, he declared, apply to brass as well. He pointed out the possibility of using larger melting units, of eliminating crucible cost, of readily controlling the purity of the product. and of nearly eliminating the loss of zinc. "The replacement of the • old crucible process is sure to come," he said; "perhaps it will come in two years, but it will, necessarily, in ten years .... The inevitable advance along this industrial line will have great influence in the metal world and will also provide, in large cities, a new kind of load for the central station." The years 1905 to 1910 may be termed the purely theoretical period of the development of the electric brass furnace, though the Conley furnace was tried out e:xperimenta.lly about 1910 and a few heats were made in an induction furnace. 2 In December, 1911, the American Chemical Society held a symposium on mineral wastes, at which Bassett s discussed the zinc· losses that attend making brass in fuel-fired furnaces.

"Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) studies of tetravalent platinum from acidic chloride solutions have been carried out with Alamine 336 as an extractant diluted in kerosene. The title metal shows the inverse behavior at higher acid concentrations. Plot of log D vs. log [Acid], mol.L-1 gave a straight line with a negative slope of 0.8±0.03 indicating the exchange of one mole of hydrogen ions for every mole of platinum(IV) extracted into the organic phase. Extraction of platinum(IV) increases with increase of extractant concentration. The plot of log D vs. log [Extractant], mol.L-1 is linear with slope 1±0.3, indicating the association of one mole of extractant with the extracted metal species. The plot between metal distributions to aqueous to organic phases is 1.3±0.01; it indicates monomeric species was formed in organic phase. Stripping of metal from the loaded organic (LO) with mineral acids such as hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric acids and bases like ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide are studied. The results indicated that hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide are the better stripping agents when compared with other acids and bases. Increase of temperature decreases the percentage extraction of metal indicating the process is endothermic. Regeneration and recycling capacity of Alamine 336 and extraction behavior of associated elements such as aluminium(III), magnesium(II), cobalt(II), iron(III) and nickel(II) were studied.IntroductionThe demand for platinum group metals (PGM’s) has risen in the last five years expected to keep in rising. Other uses include computer data storage, scientific developments, fuel cell technology and in the glass manufacturing processes."
