"The Lucky Jim mine is at Zincton in Slocan mmmg division; on the Kaslo-Nakusp branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. It is owned and operated by Zincton Mines; Limited; a subsidiary of Sheep Creek Gold Mines; Limited. The mine is far in the lead in the production of zinc in the Slocan. Its recorded production from concentrates and shipping ore was 102; 260; 191 pounds of zinc to the end of 1945.GENERAL GEOLOGY With the exception of acidic dykes the rocks near the Lucky Jim mine belong to the Slocan series, which is Triassic in age and consists principally of argillaceous rocks. It disconformably overlies greenstones of the Triassic Kaslo series about 3 miles to the northeast, and is cut by granitic rocks of the Nelson batholith 5 miles to the southeast.The sedimentary rocks in this area are best referred to on the whole as slates. They lie within the more fissile basal part of the Slocan series. The term 'slate belt' conveniently distinguishes this area of rocks characterized by slaty cleavage from the more massive argillites that are more characteristic of the Slocan as a whole. The contact between the slaty and massive argillites lies ½ mile southwest of the mine."

"A microscope-based spectrophotometer has been developed to measure superoxide release from single pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) or other phagocytes in culture. Results indicate that PAM respond to stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). It appears that some PAM do not release 02 upon stimulation by PMA; however, those that do release 0, show differences in: (I) the total amount of 0, released, (2) the rate of release of 02 and (3) the time delay for release of 02. The significance of measuring 02 release from single cells is two-fold. It allows the simultaneous study of 02 release and electrical potential changes across the membrane of PAM and it allows the study of differences in 02 release among cells. Thus, the function of Normal PAM and the dysfunction of PAM exposed to coal dusts can be more closely studied on single cells.Pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM), free cells found in the lungs, protect the lungs by removing inhaled foreign debris and bacteria. The macrophages do this by engulfing and then internalizing the foreign matter (phagocytosis). Stimulation of PAM causes the release of super-oxide radical (02) which has been shown to be the primary metabolite involved in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes (3,8,12). The super-oxide radical is highly reactive and is spontaneously or enzymatically converted to other antibacterial oxidants, including hydrogen peroxide (H202), singlette oxygen ( 02), hydroxyl radical toil'), and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) (2, 3,8,11,12).Exposure of PAM to dusts may lead to dysfunction of this cell-type and to a greater risk of lung damage or infection upon subsequent exposure to toxic dusts. To date, much of the research with this cell-type has used cytotoxicity (cell death) as a measure of dysfunction. Although this is an important end point, PAM dysfunction may occur at doses below those which lead to cell death. In addition, dysfunction has been measured using large numbers of cells. In order to obtain a clear understanding of the mechanisms involved in dysfunction, measurements should be made on single cells. As mentioned earlier, one of the major roles of this cell type is its anti-bacterial actions. Therefore, asessment of release of superoxide radical in single cells is important in determining the functional behavior of PAM before and after exposure to dusts. Since measurements of 02 production have not been made on single cells the purpose of this study is to develop the methodology needed to study release of 02 from single cells.Recent studies have suggested that a relationship exists between the release of 02 and changes in the electrical properties of phagocytes. The change in membrane potential is thought to be the initial step in superoxide production (6,9). Stimulants which cause 02 release also cause changes in the transmembrane potential of phagocytes (9) and in the permeability of the cell membrane to ions (6). For example, stimulants which cause the release of 0, from neutrophils have also been shown to increase the membrane transport of Na+ , K+ and Ca+2 and stimulation of macrophages leads to increases in Na and perhaps Ca permeability with a subsequent change in membrane potential. In some cases, phagocytic activity has been shown to depend upon the extracellular concentrations of these ions (6). Holian and Daniele (7) have shown evidence that the redistribution ofcellular Ca in alveolar macrophages is an initial step leading to 0, release. In order to provide direct evidence that 02- production is related to electrical changes across the plasma membrane of phagocytes, these two phenomena must be analyzed simultaneously on single cells. Ultimately, measurements of 0, release using the methodology developed in this study will be combined with electrophysiological tech¬niques to study both superoxide release and membrane potential changes simultaneiously on single PAM, and to examine the effects of coal and mineral dusts on their physiological fu"

Part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines mission is to supply the U.S. mineral industries with information that is useful in planning to meet the Nation's critical and strategic mineral needs if a national emergency occurs. The Bureau conducted laboratory research including operating a nominal 100 lblh pilot plant to demonstrate the recovery and concentration of chromite by gravity and flotation operations from three northern California mineral deposits. Gravity beneficiation test results show that concentrates contained as much as 52 pet chromic oxide (CrZ03) with recoveries of about 80 pet. Results from the bench-scale unit operations of mineral liberation, tabling, vanning, spiraling, pinch sluice, work index, and thickener area determination tests are presented in this report.

"This paper deals with the description of the capabilities of a unique rotary coal cutting simulator which has been designed and fabricated at West Virginia University. It operates under the simulated mining conditions with in-situ stresses (horizontal and vertical stresses) being applied to a coal block of 18 in. x 15 in . x 6 in located in a suitably designed confining chamber. Cutting drum rotation can be varied from 1 to 40 rpm with the capability of stopping the drum after a predetermined number of rotations. Tests can be performed with four different bit angles, 15, 30, 45 and 60 degrees . A maximum of seven bits could be used in seven different orbits. Various cutting depths up to a maximum of 4 in. is possible.Monitoring devices constitute, Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs), pressure transducers, cascade Impactors, flow meters, flow controls and drum cutting speed. LVDTs are used to monitor the displacement of the coal block as well as the depth of cut. Pressure transducers are used to monitor the changes in pressure, both due to the thrust and due, to the intermittent cutting nature of the rotary cutting. Flow controls will be used to run the drum at a set rpm between 1 and 40 and to provide a different rate of advance. All the above mentioned devices can be operated and monitored by a fully automated control system. Six-stage cascade impactors are used to determine the mass distribution of dust along the rotation path of the drum. The fracture size, shape and Intensity can be studied by optical microscopy and the dust entrainment by using high speed photography.This equipment will basically be used to study the fracture mechanism in coal, associated with operating and in-situ parameters and further relate It to dust generation and entrainment In underground coal mines."

"The notion of “value” has always been a subjective and contentious issue. Indeed, value is in the eye of the beholder. There are as varied methods and practices for valuing property, as there are industries in which they are applied. For example, there is replacement value, insurance value, salvage value, appraised value, book value, and fair market value, to name a few, although in the mining industry, valuations usually refer to fair market value.In the Canadian mining industry, at present, there are no comprehensive regulations or guidelines that specify which approaches or methods are appropriate for use in the valuation of mineral projects. In January 1999, The Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) establish a committee to review and advise on approaches and methodologies for the valuation of mineral properties. Among the approaches to be considered are included the following: the discounted cash flow approach, the cost approach, the option pricing approach and the market comparables approach. In addition, methodologies differ depending on whether the project is at the exploration stage or the producing stage.The CIM Special Committee on the Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal) expects that its final report will form the basis for a Canadian code or standard for the valuation of mineral properties."

Fines are produced in any blasting application. Depending on the application, fines may or may not be a desirable product of the blast. In most quarry and construction applications, fines are considered an undesirable product since it does not constitute a sellable product and there are costs to the operation for disposal. On the other hand, in most open pits fines do not represent as much of a problem since the ore has to be crushed and ground after being blasted. Therefore, fines in such operations may reduce the energy consumed in the downstream operations.

"In Belgium, Boom Clay is considered as one of the potential host formations for the disposal of the High Level radioactive Waste (HLW). The URL HADES at 223 m depth at Mol site was constructed in order to study the feasibility of HLW disposal in Boom Clay. Since 1995, the URL R&D programme has focused on large scale demonstration tests like the PRACLAY experiment.The PRACLAY in-situ experiments include a set of three tests: The gallery and crossing test, PRACLAY Heater test and PRACLAY seal test. The main aim of the Heater test is to study at a large scale the thermal impact of a HLW repository on the host rock. The test is housed in the PRACLAY gallery. A hydraulic seal, made of compacted swelling and low permeable bentonite annular ring was installed at the intersection between the heated and the non-heated part of the gallery. The primary objective of the seal is to provide undrained hydraulic boundary conditions for the Heater Test.The PRACLAY gallery was constructed in 2007 and the hydraulic seal was installed in 2010. The bentonite is hydrated by natural and artificial process. The swelling, total pressure and pore pressure of the bentonite are continuously measured and analysed by numerical simulations to get a better understanding of this hydration processes. The performance of the seal is tested systematically by means of gas injection breakthrough tests and permeability tests at interface bentonite / Boom Clay and in the Boom Clay around the seal.The PRACLAY Heater will be turned on at the end of Oct. 2014, since a sufficient seal swelling has been attained to fulfill its role for the PRACLAY Heater test. This paper will focus on the PRACLAY Seal test: How we understand the process behind the hydration of the bentonite and how we test the performance of the bentonite seal."

The path from process conception to commercial implementation poses significant technical, economic, and sometimes political challenges for every project team. Solving the technical challenges typically distinguishes successful projects from those that fail. Here, the authors provide an outline for technical success based on lessons learned from years of experience in process design and R&D. Challenges faced by new technology developers, with regard to design and definition, are described. Experience-based methods to avoid missteps are shared. Special emphasis is placed on the selection of viable unit operations, definition of known and unknown parameters, experimental screening of options, and piloting for scalable design information. Use of computational models to define, assist, and interpret the pilot operations and results are described. Furthermore, the value of active collaboration amongst the design, research, and owner team is demonstrated.

With batteries of adding machines they had proved that she was suffering from serious deficiencies in critical food- stuffs and in practically all of the raw materials necessary for the conduct of modern warfare. Their calculations showed that with respect to fats, oils, wool, cotton, hides, petroleum, iron, copper and other metals, the Reich was bound to be at a great disadvantage vis-a-vis the French and British as long as the latter could keep open the lines of sea communication. The conclusion seemed obvious-"Germany can't win." The more cautious of the commentators introduced qualifications as to the length of the war and the tightness of the British and French blockade. They also made a third qualification as to the character of the struggle- whether it was to be a war of attrition or a war of movement. But since the invasion of Norway in April, there is no longer any doubt on this score. It is a war of movement-a war in which fuel, lubricants, and metals are being consumed on a scale never before seen.

For many years, it has been known that certain loud noises may, with prolonged exposure, temporarily or permanently damage a person's hearing ability. Pneumatic rock drills, al-though among the offenders, have, until recently, remained unaltered and unrestricted as to noise output. Now, there are drills available with higher rates of penetration and yet with noise levels reduced to those of previous models or less. Use of such drills, when proved to be superior in noise attenuation and of acceptable performance, should be encouraged in order to reduce future hearing losses to a minimum. People Have the Right to Hear P ERHAPS the earliest recognized indication of hearing loss due to industrial noise was the deaf-ness developed by the workmen in boiler factories. Here, the vibration set up in the shells by the riveting hammers gradually deteriorated the workmen's hearing, especially those whose job it was to hold the dollies inside the drum, where the sound is greatly intensified by reflection

P.T. Freeport Indonesia currently operate a 600,000 t/d mining and 125,000 t/d milling operation in the remote highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The isolated location and generally difficult working conditions make for challenges not encountered in most North American operations. In spite of this, the mill technical groups have been able to develop and maintain a highly effective level of plant wide automation. This has been achieved through the appropriate selection of available technologies and the implementation of innovative management practices. This paper provides an overview of the control systems currently installed and focuses on those practices which have resulted in the long term success of process control at Freeport.

"Development of failure in brittle materials is associated with microcracks, which release energy in the form of elastic waves called acoustic emissions. This paper presents results from acoustic emission measurements obtained during three-point bending tests on Nestos marble under laboratory conditions. Acoustic emission activity was monitored using piezoelectric acoustic emission sensors, and the potential for accurate prediction of rock damage based on acoustic emission data was investigated. Damage localization determined based on acoustic emissions evident in the critically stressed region in the form of scattered events or stresses below and close to the strength of the material.IntroductionNon-destructive testing (NDT) has gained popularity in recent years due to commonly available sensors, devices and software tools. Although the majority of such testing still occurs under laboratory conditions, the ultimate goal is a direct field application, especially in the case of underground mining. NDT, if properly applied, may be used to directly provide material property values and characteristics that can be used to determine rock mass or soil mass behavior, with a direct impact to mine design (Iannacchione et al., 2003).AE is generally defined as the high-frequency transient elastic waves originating from the sudden release of energy at localized points within a loaded material (Nomikos et al., 2010). The field of Acoustic Emissions (AE) due to compressive, tensile or other types of loads is a promising research area due to its wide application. The accurate identification of failure precursors stemming from AE is still an open research topic (Lei et al., 2004).Rock is a typically inhomogeneous and anisotropic material that contains several natural defects with various scales such as grain boundaries, microcracks, pores and joint inclusions (Jing, 2003; Read, 2004). Damage induced by microcracks is an essential mechanism in many brittle rocks subjected to stresses. An applied stress induces microcrack growth and damage is distributed uniformly throughout the sample. Finally, the microcracks coalesce and the damage is localized to a shear band, leading to strain softening and macro-scoping failure (Dragon et al, 2000)."

"Shale gas and oil production has grown rapidly in recent years, and consequently there are increasing demands to understand the mechanical and microseismic properties of shale. Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring provides useful information on the fracture mechanisms of shale rocks, and provides a basis for interpreting field seismic observations. While there have been attempts for microseismic monitoring of conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs, shale presents a large number of issues that require further investigation. For this purpose, experiments were conducted to understand the characteristics of the AE waveforms propagated through Opalinus shale rock in the time and frequency domains. Frequency range, arrival time, first arrival amplitude and other parameters such as counts, duration and energy of the waves generated from artificial and natural sources in the shale specimens were detected and compared with AE characteristics of granite, a brittle rock that has been extensively investigated. The experimental tests showed that there are some important factors that influence the analyses and interpretations of seismic surveys and microseismic monitoring of shale compared to granite. One of these factors is the anisotropic behavior of shale that causes the wave to propagate with different velocities in different directions. Also bedding planes and micro-discontinuities in the shale cause attenuation of the waves. Thus the AE waveforms that arrive at the sensor are a distorted and attenuated versions of the source waveform.INTRODUCTIONMonitoring microseismic activity from hydraulic fracturing of shale provides vital information for mapping injection paths and fluid migration in order to check the effectiveness of the hydraulic fracture stimulation. Analysis of microseismic source locations can be used to identify fracture networks induced or mobilized during the hydraulic fracturing operation (Rotherd and Shapiro, 2003). On the other hand, by monitoring and assessing detected signals from hydraulic fracturing one can evaluate the induced seismic impact of the stimulation operation.While there have been attempts to monitor microseismic events in conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs, shale presents a large number of issues that require further investigation. For this purpose, experiments were conducted on Opalinus shale to understand its acoustic emission (AE) characteristics in the time and frequency domains."

In view of the importance of size reduction operations from the energy consumption point of view, during the past one hundred and fifty years a number of attempts have been made to develop a general energy-size relationship. However, to date it has not been possible to clearly define the scope of application of various laws proposed, though Bond law has been widely used with a moderate degree of success. It was, therefore, decided to carry out a thorough analysis of the batch ball mill grinding data available in the literature on several minerals that were ground under normal range of operating conditions. In particular, relationships proposed by Bond, Kapur, Voller and Morrell were examined in detail. It was found that the relationship proposed by Kapur in terms of the mean particle size provided a more accurate basis for estimation of energy. The value of the exponent of mean particle size in this relationship, a, is same as the exponent of the particle size in the expression for the grinding rate parameter: ki = Axia, provided the particle size distribution range corresponds to the self-similar or self-preserving regime. In this regime, mean particle size is proportional to the 80 percent passing size and size modulus. From the practical application point of view, it was possible to describe the variation of µ1 over limited, but significantly broad size range, using a constant value of a. Thus, by carrying out a few batches, grinding experiments over the size distribution range corresponding to the contents of the production mill, the applicable value of a can be determined. "The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) Near Detector Hall at Fermilab and the Lafarge – Conco Mine are located approximately 100 meters underground in the Galena-Platteville dolomite just below its contact with the overlying Maquoketa shale in Northeastern Illinois, USA. A new cavern was excavated adjacent to the MINOS Near Detector Hall at Fermilab to house the near detector for the Off-axis Neutrino Appearance Experiment (NOvA) program. During this excavation approximately 1150 cubic meters of shale rock were removed. Tiltmeter arrays consisting of a series of hydrostatic leveling sensors (HLS), which are spaced regularly over a total distance of 50-to-100 meters, were used to monitor subsurface deformations. The tiltmeter response in the MINOS Near Detector Hall due to the NOvA cavern excavation is approximately thirteen times the estimated response based on using laboratorydetermined properties. The discrepancy between modeled and measured tilt is likely due to differences in Young’s Modulus in the rock mass versus in a small laboratory sample. Amplitudes of measured solid earth tides differ from the amplitudes of theoretical solid earth tides by up to 40 percent for both arrays. This is likely due to a local heterogeneity or discontinuity.INTRODUCTIONLong baseline tiltmeters have been used to record small earth movements since the early 1900s. One of the first studies using long baseline tiltmeters to measure earth tides was published by Michelson (1914). He used a leveled 152-meter long, 0.15-meter diameter tube half-filled with water connecting two concrete-lined pits. The pipe was trenched 1.75 meters underground in Williams Bay, Wisconsin in a sandy-clay soil. Initially only an east-west line was used, though a north-south line was added after it was seen that viable results were obtained. Measurements were made by hand either hourly or once every two hours depending on the time of day. When compared to 0.7 times the calculated earth tides, the tiltmeter signal matched almost exactly. This excellent result began the use of long baseline tiltmeters to measure small earth movements."

Transportation is one of several important increments in the total market cost of most commodities. On a national average it has been reported that transportation accounts for about 25% of the total cost of a product at the market place. And industrial minerals are no exception. In fact, the proportionate cost frequently exceeds the 25% average. Further, it may actually determine the economic value of a deposit. Transportation may possibly be thought of as a specialized subject of concern only to a traffic manager and of only nominal interest to the mining engineer, the geologist or other technically oriented member of mineral producers' staff. However, in the industrial minerals field, interest is not commonly confined to exploration, development, production or marketing, but is in contrast an overlapping one. In a very real sense this broad area of interest in the total economics of the business is the specialty of the industrial minerals man. And transportation is a vital part of the total picture. Comments in this paper deal with rail transportation.

As the orebodies become more complex and lower grade, there is an increasing demand from crushing circuits for a finer product. When the product from a crushing circuit does not satisfy the requirements of the downstream processes, the cost of production increases. Thus, enhancing the performance of cone crushers through optimisation of their operating factors becomes important. One of the key factors affecting performance of cone crushers is the filling of the crushing chamber during the operation. The effect of varying the filling of the crushing chamber of a cone crusher was investigated. To assess the crusher performance, parameters such as crusher capacity, power utilisation, and reduction ratio were used. Extensive plant trials were conducted to obtain samples and operational data when the crusher chamber was 50% full (half-full) and 100% full, which is 300 mm above the top of the crusher chamber (super-choked condition). The results indicated a 62% difference in the crushing capacity when the crusher was operated in a super-choked condition compared to the half-full chamber level. In the super-choked condition, the size-specific energy at 12.7 mm was 20 % lower than that of the half-full condition. The Bond ball mill work index (BBWI) of crusher product indicated that the BBWI of the product of the super choked condition is 5.6% less than that of the product of half-full condition. This can be attributed to the generation of micro cracks in particles due to increase in the interparticle breakage when the crusher was operated in the super-choked mode. "Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. ACURSORY glance through the literature on the subject reveals that the ablest minds in the land are devoting themselves to the great question of labor, of which employment is one of the fundamentals. Volumes have been written and the end is not in sight. Employment management is today about in the position that efficiency was 15 years ago. During the early days of the war, and perhaps for a year or so before, labor was plentiful. As the war progressed and Europe drew on us for munitions, employers began to compete with one another for', all, classes of labor. Labor was difficult to obtain, wages rose, the labor turnover increased, and employers began to install employment departments, welfare plans, and all sorts of schemes, but the labor efficiency dropped. As the war progressed, greater and greater production was demanded. New factors were introduced each day. The government, labor unions, industrial councils, all tended, it seemed, to make the situation almost intolerable. "The mining industry may have survived the October 28 federal budget relatively unscathed, but the same certainly cannot be said of the petroleum sector-and many mining men are left wondering if their industry will be the next one to be singled out for special attention, as federal and provincial governments seek additional revenues and pursue nationalistic or provincial policies.Higher taxes, higher prices, a potpourri of ""incentives"", and a -""Canadianization"" policy mark the principal features of the new National Energy Program released by the government along with Finance Minister MacEachen's budget address.This month, Tax Notes examines the federal budget. with appropriate emphasis on the National Energy Program and its possible future implications forthe Canadian resource industries.IntroductionMost of the Canadian mining industry (tar sands miners excepted) heaved a sigh of relief on the evening of October 28, 1980, as Finance Minister MacEachen confounded the prophets in his budget address by not raising personal or corporation taxes and by making only relatively modest changes in the general tax system. Instead, he concentrated on a sweeping new energy policy. Unfortunately for that important sector of Canada's mining industry which is involved in mining the country's vast tar sands reserves, either now or in the future, the National Energy Program that was introduced along with the budget 'has serious implications."
