This paper describes the implementation of specialized software in mine planning at the Cleveland-Cliffs' managed Empire Mine on Michigan's Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience on the eastern end of the Marquette Range beginning in the early 1960's. The Empire Mine, in its thirty-fifth year of production, uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short and long range planning.

"Recent regulations, as well as a general aversion to central dust collectors within the Powder River Basin Coal user’s community, have created a need for an alternate method for eliminating airborne dust. This paper addresses the capital expenditure as well as the cost of ownership of an integrated point source air cleaning system in comparison to a central collection system. This assessment was conducted by comparing the cost to purchase and operate a central dust collection system and integrated air cleaner system on a typical multiple transfer point application. The central dust collector consists of a negative pressure blower, a series of filter bags, a collection hopper, a screw conveyor to place collected material back into the material stream, and a series of ducts to pull air and dust from individual pickup points. The point specific integrated air cleaners consists of a negative pressure blower to pull dust and air from an application point through a bag-less filter media located at the application point. The agglomerated material is then redeposited into the material stream at point of use without the need for ducting or a central material hopper. The assessment yielded a 54% reduction in capital expenditure and a 26% reduction in operating costs for the same application when using individual dust filters as opposed to a central system. In addition to the lowered cost, there are reductions in risk associated with the elimination of ductwork and the central containment enclosure for collected explosive dust. By the conclusion of this paper, the reader will have a better understanding of the quantifiable differences between a central dust collection system and a set integrated air cleaner systems. BACKGROUND Spillage has always been a problem in the bulk solids handling industry. As long as there have been conveyors, there has been spillage. Spillage is material that falls off a conveyor belt and creates a hazard in the environment around a conveyor belt."

Highwall failures in large deep open cut mines have very significant safety and commercial implications. There are many factors influencing the stability of highwalls. The major influence is the interaction of the local geology with the shape of the pit wall. This factor is in the realm of the geotechnical engineer and is beyond the control of the blasting engineer. However, a secondary influence is the blastinduced damage to the wall. In most open cut metal mines the blasting strategy to control this damage involves the use of separate production and trim blasts bounded by presplits at the final wall.

Introduction This paper may be regarded as another instalment of the story of the Britannia milling operation. From time to time in the past, articles (1) have been prepared by various members of the staff, giving details of crushing, grinding, and flotation treatment for the normal Britannia ore. It is not, therefore, the purpose of the present paper further to discuss what may be termed the standard milling operation, but rather to describe a flotation practice which has been evolved directly as a result of the general depression. The normal Britannia ore mixture contains chalcopyrite and pyrite as the main sulphide minerals, together with minor gold and silver values. The standard milling practice, evolved during several years of experimentation, provided for bulk flotation of the two sulphides after primary grinding to only approximately 35-mesh, followed by regrinding of the bulk concentrate, with subsequent separation of the chalcopyrite and pyrite to make a marketable concentrate of each mineral. However, in the face of a constantly increasing surplus of copper on the world markets and a steadily falling price during 1930 and 1931, it was obviously undesirable to continue producing large quantities of this metal at a loss. On the other hand, Company officials were very reluctant to add to unemployment by closing down entirely, provided operations could be continued without excessive losses. Fortunately, the existence was known of a fair sized body of ore, quite low in copper and relatively high in zinc content, with also a very considerably higher gold value than that prevailing in other sections of the mine.

Mining and metallurgical industries need to minimize their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; Hatch specializes in conducting mining and metallurgical energy management assessments and optimizing productivity. Projects executed have demonstrated that there is a wealth of energy management, waste reduction, and process efficiency improvements that require no or low capital investment. Typical energy cost savings are on the order of 5% to 12%, with similar reductions in GHG emissions. Hatch generates Marginal Abatement Cost Curves to optimize the implementation pathway, maximizing carbon abatement and minimizing cost. The findings of a practical case study from Cameco are presented.

"Very little is known about the large scale fluid dynamics and associated distribution of copper in an operating electrowinning cell, yet they will have a major influence on mass transfer and plating quality. The CFD model in this work is used to simulate an entire EW cell with 60 cathodes and 61 anodes, or 121 anode–cathode pairs, elucidating for the first time the three-dimensional (3D) flow and copper distribution in an industrial cell. Two methods for the distribution of electrolyte are modelled:1. Downcomer method: electrolyte is fed by a downcomer at one end of the cell, overflowing at the opposite end.2. Manifold method: a horizontal manifold pipe runs the whole length of the cell and feeds electrolyte via small holes in the top of the manifold pipe.The recirculation that develops within each anode-cathode pair, driven by oxygen bubble generation on the anode, is similar to that seen previously in two-dimensional models of single anode–cathode gaps. However a more complex 3D flow recirculation is established, which involves flow of electrolyte down the side gaps (being a path of low resistance for return flow) as well as the usual return flow down the cathode side of each pair gap. The bubble-driven flow is not influenced by the mode of electrolyte distribution.The electrolyte flow due to the manifold and downcomer is somewhat secondary to the bubble driven flow. In the case of the downcomer distribution mode, the high injection velocity causes a very turbulent flow in the first 1–2 m down the cell from the downcomer, with several large vortices developing. This may lead to some sludge particles being entrained into the bulk of the cell.In the manifold pipe case, the jet from each hole is dissipated very quickly, within the first 10–20 cm. The jets are directed into the downward flowing zone of the bubble-driven recirculation, which leads to unstable and periodic behaviour on a large spatial scale.In both the manifold and downcomer cases, there is a marked two-zone vertical stratification in copper concentration."

"This paper presents a series of case studies where spherical camera photographs were used to generate 3D shaft models using photogrammetric methods. The shaft models were, checked for accuracy by comparing them to overlapping laser scan data, provided survey data or idealized shaft models. Short lengths of model were found to more accurately reproduce the shaft surface, with a best observed accuracy of 8 mm. Longer models encountered errors with accumulated errors as exhibited by slight deviations from vertical or slightly conical model shape. At present, the models are considered acceptable for general documentation and gross change detection. INTRODUCTION Shaft inspections are required by mining regulations in many jurisdictions and are commonly completed by trained mine personnel via visual inspections. This can be time consuming and prone to errors due to lapses in attention and the rapid travel rate required to inspect an entire shaft in a reasonable amount of time. Similarly, because of the time requirements, there can be impacts on other aspects of mining as a result of occupying the shaft for inspections. Spherical cameras with supplemental light systems offer a modern addition or alternative to conventional inspections. These cameras can be lowered relatively quickly to collect high definition, fully illuminated videos of the shaft that can be reviewed in detail later while the shaft returns to service (Gillis et.al., 2019). The use of cameras offers a further opportunity for valuable survey data generation from the same original data stream. The video data can be processed into three-dimensional (3D) models using Structure-from-Motion (Westoby et al., 2012) based photogrammetric methods. Depending on the quality of the source video and availability of survey control (required for all photogrammetry models) these models can be very accurate. Shaft surveying can be conducted with traditional theodolite methods but such surveys are time consuming and limited in their data density. Similarly, scans can be completed using conventional terrestrial laser scanners, but this requires a significant number of distinct setups to provide sufficient overlap between scans. Work is being conducted both on the laser scanning (SLAM, Durrant-Whyte & Bailey, 2006) and photogrammetry fronts towards kinetic scanning (Benecke, 2017) systems. The major advancement which is permitting these kinetic systems is Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) which can provide localization in GPS denied environments and reduce errors associated with the open traverse format associated with shaft scanning."

(Communication to the Secretary) : The investigation so fully described by Mr. Laudig was undertaken with the idea of determining if it is possible to learn by expesiment, without an actual trial in the furnace, what economical results can be expected from the use of a given ore-mixture. The research was necessarily preliminary, and the results obtained are only to be depended upon so far as they relate to the samples treated. With the exception of the ores obtained from the stock-piles of the Buffalo Furnace Company, and several samples taken at a neighboring furnace, there is no certainty that the ores represented the average shipments of any mine. For this reason the publication of the names of the ores might do producers a great injustice. The names of the ores arc therefore withheld, and their identity is further .veiled by leaving out of the analyses the phosphorus-contents. The investigation was begun with the preconceived idea that the rate of reduction would be found to be dependent upon the accessibility of the particles of the ore to the action of the reducing-gas. In other words, a spongy, brown hematite or a very fine Mesabi would be the easiest reduced. I had formed a scale with No. 21 first, No. 30 second, No. 1 third, Nos. 5, 24, 25 and the remaining Mesabis fourth, etc , which is sufficient to show how much actual results differ from a judgment based on physical characteristics. Technological advances in sensor and material handling technology has enabled a step change in mine operations performance. Sensors capable of monitoring the grade of broken rock mass can be mounted on shovels, truck loading units or conveyors allowing highly precise ore/waste decisions to be made on small parcels of rock, increasing selectivity. This increased selectivity has the potential to remove sub-economic material from the product stream prior to incurring ore treatment costs. Bulk ore sorting is capable of intervening at <10t “pods” on Run Of Mine conveyors, or alternatively at per bucket loading (5-100t) or truck scale (30-350t) parcels of ore. This Grade Engineering technique being developed by CRCORE (Rutter, 2017) can improve mill feed grade, remove deleterious materials and ensure that the high capital intensity ore treatment facility is presented with the best ore feed strategy. While this technology can improve mine economics, estimating the performance of a bulk ore sorting system is challenging. Traditional resource estimation practices such as Ordinary Kriging and Inverse distance weighting (IDW) are based on weighted averages, a process that smooths the grade profile, reducing modelled variance and dispersion. Its purpose is to generate a globally unbiased result but is less suited to generating a model of adequate granularity to enable confidence in local grade heterogeneity. This is an essential component for bulk ore sorting success. Estimating ore sorting performance requires knowledge of the grade-tonnage curve at the scale of the sensor diversion unit (SDU). Evaluation based on an estimator that smooths the SDU distribution will not correctly predict ore/waste separation or economic performance. Alternatives to traditional linear geostatistics have been tested on a variety of mineralisation styles. Additionally, a number of heterogeneity metrics have been developed to assist with evaluation and assessment. The difference between estimation for grade (metal) and modelling for traditional mining block models, versus methods used for predicting heterogeneity and variability are explored.

The lignites of Otago and Southland offer a potentially viable future feedstock for electricity production and possible conversion to petrochemicals or liquid fuels. The deposits, when combined, represent New ZealandÆs largest energy inventory; equivalent to about 74 000 petajoules û or approximately 35 times current natural gas reserves. Too often dismissed as irrelevant to New ZealandÆs energy future because of adverse perceptions of the value of low rank coals, the strategic value of this resource is in fact huge. &nbsp; Investigations of the lignites extend back over more than 50 years (LFTB various, CRL Energy Ltd). Whilst it is not the intention of this paper to review this work, these investigations have confirmed the suitability of the resource as a feedstock for thermochemical conversion. Current estimates of South Island lignite mining costs are NZ$1.0 - 3.0/GJ (Natusch 2005), making these resources amongst the most competitively-priced energy sources available world-wide. &nbsp; This value, however, will only be captured if we as a country begin to envisage a world-scale, long-life, integrated and multi-faceted development sized to supply world markets for chemicals or fuels. Recent CAE studies (Hooper and Riddolls, 2005) have emphasised the vital importance of ensuring that any exploitation of this resource maximises their value to New Zealand. The question that thus must be applied is how might large-scale utilisation of the resource fit with New ZealandÆs primary energy supply, and its potential for the export of high-value commodities. &nbsp; From the broader perspective of New ZealandÆs total energy supply equation we need to examine other supply options beyond just the generation of electricity. We face in this country a situation wherein almost all our liquid fuels feedstock has to be imported with projections for an increasing dependence on imported oil. In addition NZ has a natural gas reserves-to-production ratio of less than ten years, and dwindling supply from local production. Without further natural gas discoveries, New Zealand has only a window of approximately five years before we will need to commit to imported LNG or some other thermal fuels option. &nbsp; In other words, New Zealand is facing an uncertain future unless we can restore energy inventories to cover an adequate strategic reserve capacity as well as enable long-term investment in alternative sources. Within this context the South Island lignite resources are thus deserving of more attention. The extent of the resource is well known, its suitability for conversion reasonably assessed, and its magnitude such that there is little doubt that lignite conversion could adequately meet NZÆs future energy needs for many years out. &nbsp; This paper reviews coal gasification technology, its application to lignite and the possibilities for future development of the lignite resources. It is argued that the strategic imperative for this country is to secure the lignite resources as a primary energy source for this country well into the latter half of this century.

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION AND ITS BOUNDARIESTHE REGION of Western Canada covered by this re-port lies between the Precambrian rocks of the Canadian Shield and the structurally deformed rocks of the eastern Cordillera, extending northward from the international border to the 60th parallel. It is some 487,000 square miles in area, with a total sedimentary fill of about 535,000 cubic miles0>. It includes parts of the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and the northeast corner of British Columbia and forms part of the geological region known as the Interior Platform, commonly referred to as the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The bedrock comprises carbonates and evaporites of Paleozoic age that lie on Precambrian crystalline rocks and are over-lain by a relatively thick blanket of Mesozoic and Tertiary elastic rocks. The nearly flat-lying bedrock, covered by a thick mantle of glacial drift, forms the Interior Plains physiographic province."

Our program has been dictated by the necessity of broadening our markets through converting potash chemicals to fertilizers more in demand than potassium chloride. To this end, we have undertaken studies on methods of preparing potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate by rather simple conversion. When mixtures of sodium and magnesium sulphates are reacted with potassium chloride, the ratio of sodium to magnesium is quite pertinent. A range of ratios has been selected and the conversions of potassium chloride to sulphate have been assessed by cyclic operations. Results from experimental procedures for producing potassium nitrate are also avail-able. The influence on recovery for systems including organic solvents is assessed for a variety of situations.

"A rapidly growing company in the northern US needed a large auditorium built into a dolomite bedrock hillside. The structure required an 80-foot-deep earth retention system independent of the auditorium foundation and superstructure. Allowable wall movements were limited to less than two inches. A 60-foot-tall permanent shotcreted soil and rock nail wall was designed for excavation support. The soil and rock nail wall utilized both active (post-tensioned) and passive nails, with capacities and installation angles optimized to address varying soil and rock conditions and to support heavy surcharges. The wall was configured with three two-foot-wide benches to facilitate controlled blasting and removal of more than two million cubic yards of soil, limestone and dolomite bedrock, and featured a permanent cast-in-place concrete face and a robust waterproofing and drainage system. A 20-foot-high reinforced concrete retaining wall was required at the top of the soil and rock nail wall to raise grades, resulting in a large surcharge.Design of the soil and rock nail wall was initiated less than three months before the start of construction, requiring expedited geotechnical explorations, analyses, design, and construction that would occur simultaneously. Design changes were made to address the discovery of a weak clay residuum seam at depth running along the base of the excavation, as well as significant changes to the building footprint made after the start of construction. Extensive performance monitoring was conducted during construction to measure vibrations and movements.Introduction and Project BackgroundA fast-growing company in the northern United States had a need for 600,000 square foot, 11,000 seat auditorium as part of its campus expansion. The auditorium was built underground, into a hillside to preserve the views of rolling terrain and farmland beyond. It featured a green roof and rockwork facing that mimicked regional geologic formations. The sixstory building required up to 80 feet of earth retention, including 60 feet of excavation beneath existing grades.As concepts for the project evolved, it became apparent that due to the geologic conditions, space limitations on site and the depth of cut required, a standard counterfort wall system would not be feasible. With groundbreaking for the building three months away, Thornton Tomasetti (structural engineer) engaged GEI Consultants, Inc. (wall design engineer) to design a 1,600-foot-long permanent soil and rock nail wall to support the excavation. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) threaten the wellbeing and livelihood of a large number of construction workers incurring a significant cost to society. We present a new method to monitor and diagnose MSD risks in the workplace. The sensing unit of the system is an optical encoder encompassed within a non-intrusive exoskeleton to measure the joint angle of interest. This sensor can be applied to ball-and-socket and hinge-type joints of the human body, such as the shoulder, elbow, and knee joints. The system is contactless and does not require markers or cameras. Angle measurements are acquired directly without mathematical post-processing, thereby avoiding numerical noise and drift challenges. The system is a simple, robust, and deployable, but it currently lacks resolution of parallel degrees of freedom.

Phase 06 of the Los Bronces mine, currently under extraction for development, has the particularity of being close to the installations and buildings of a neighboring copper mine. Therefore, the blasts must ensure the continuity of the operation without affecting the nearby structures of the neighboring district, which include Maintenance sheds and Warehouse. Specifically, the safeguards consider a scenario that includes: - Flyrock projections (<150m) - Edge profile studies - Vibrations according to the NCh3577 standard - Nitrous gases Additionally, Phase 06 is also within Los Bronces, so strict control over spillage into the pit is necessary to avoid blocking ramp access to this level. The challenge lies in protecting not only the operation and facilities of the neighboring mining district but also the operability of Los Bronces. Thus, addressing these considerations, blasting configurations are developed with prior simulation of vibration models, flyrock, and spillage in all blasts, with strict control of technical design and implementation to ensure the results. Currently, blasts are successfully executed with control of projections based on the proximity of the projects, vibration (<40mm/s) with decoupling of holes of 17 mm/s between holes, reactive rock tests for explosive selection (loading advancement), and spillage simulation inside the pit according to the loading design; thus, ensuring operational continuity and mine development.

A low-grade cassiterite-magnetite ore from Sichuan province, China, is finely disseminated, assaying 0.39% Sn and 23.20% Fe, respectively. Mineralogy studies show that the fine-sized cassiterite is mainly disseminated in iron minerals and gangue. Moreover, the embedded size of cassiterite is very fine and must be ground to -0.01 mm to achieve a degree of liberation of about 90%. Therefore, fine grinding needs to be conducted to get a high quality tin concentrate and a great loss of tin cannot be avoided when treating the ore by gravity concentration. Based on the above facts, a two-stage separation, with a low intensity magnetic separator and a shaking table, was selected to test the ore. Compared with other similar plants, a relatively good separation has been achieved. Three acceptable products for smelters were obtained as following: iron concentrate assaying 61.69% Fe with a recovery of 75.09%, tin concentrate assaying 27.21% Sn with a recovery of 56.97% and a sulfur concentrate assaying 40.86% S with a recovery of 32.03%, respectively.

A classification of important uranium deposits which utilizes both genetic and descriptive criteria is presented. The dual aspect is useful because, while the non-genetic nomenclature for the different deposit types is amenable to various interpretations, the critical characteristics of each deposit type can be analyzed to clarify various genetic points. Although the classification is intended primarily for Canadian uranium deposits, most of the important deposit types known elsewhere can be accommodated.

Mathematical programming (MP) is fundamental to systems engineering and operations management, but has not been widely adopted by mineral processors. The current paper presents an interdisciplinary approach, using MP to incorporate basic notions of mass balancing into an optimization framework. The optimization is typically related to economic profitability. Two- and three-product formulas are extended to give formal descriptions of alternate modes of operation, and a global representation of the concentrator. At this global level, the framework may assist plant managers to make tactical decisions based on incoming feed data. The MP framework is demonstrated through sample calculations describing a lead-zinc concentrator.

The PMott MacDonaldlane Train Tunnel West Extension (PTTWE) Project at HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport includes the extension of the existing automated people mover system and terminal renovations at the baggage claim station. To assist with design, pricing, and assessment of risk on this progressive design-build project, 3D design models were prepared to increase visibility into realities of construction. This paper will focus on the original intent of the models and explore the additional, unforeseen value they provided throughout the design and construction process.
