The function of the Metallurgical Division is to conduct investigations relating to the treatment of mineral products from the state in which they are mined to the refined metal or other unfabricated product. These investigations include scientific and practical studies of ore dressing, covering the crushing and grinding of ores, separation by gravity, flotation. and magnetic methods; the hydrometallurgical treatment of ores, including cyanidation and amalgamation of the precious metals; the smelting and refining of copper, lead, and zinc, as well as the rare metals; and steel-melting practices from the raw ore to the finished steel. The object of this work is to conserve natural resources and eliminate waste by furnishing information on current methods of metallurgical practice. making fundamental studies of metallurgical processes, and developing new processes to the point of demonstrating their practicability. The Division is made up of sections devoted to the several phases of this work, each section being headed by an investigator capable of supervising his particular work. The work is carried on at the experiment stations and field offices or in the field, whichever seems best suited for the work in hand. The following, projects should be mentioned as particularly outstanding among those consummated successfully during the year: 1. Application of the type of chemicals known in the textile industry as wetting-out agents to flotation and agglomeration of ores, particulary soluble salts such as sodium and potassium chloride which must be treated in saturated brine. 2. Demonstration or a linear relation between surface and coercive force in magnetic minerals and Its application to magnetic separation and to the determination of grinding efficiencies and other metallurgical data which require surface determination at very fine sizes. 3. Pilot-plant demonstration of the practicability of the reduction of iron ore by natural gas and conversion of this direct iron into steel by direct melting and by forging and rolling before melting. The structure and properties of the iron so produced were studied in detail. This report covers the fiscal year July 1. 1934, to June 30, 1935.

"INTRODUCTIONCrossrail will provide London and the South East of England with a world class, high-capacity railway to ease congestion on London’s public transport system and enable better access between business, residential and entertainment districts. At the heart of this £14.8bn scheme lies Farringdon Station, which will form a major interchange between Crossrail, Thameslink and London Underground. The £400m Farringdon Crossrail station was awarded to a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK) in 2011, and comprises two ticket halls, two platform tunnels and a multitude of connecting tunnels all constructed using open face sprayed concrete linings (SCL). BFK appointed Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP) as their specialist SCL designer. As the main contractor for both C300/C410, the Western Running Tunnels and Station Caverns, and also for C435 Farringdon Station, BFK were in a unique position to develop strategies to reduce cost, time and risk for the Client. One such innovation involved the continuation of the TBM drives for the running tunnels right through the length of the new Farringdon platform caverns. This created large diameter precast concrete pilot tunnels for the subsequent platform enlargement using SCL. The benefits of such an approach are described in detail by St.John et al 2015. BFK also introduced another alternative strategy to reduce cost, time and risk, by proposing to abandon the TBMs in the ground (“Turn & Bury”) permanently rather than recovering them through the ticket hall shafts. This de-risked the programme, enabling critical ticket hall construction to proceed unhindered. However, one consequence of this revised strategy was an area of increased underground congestion, with two SCL tunnels (RTE2 and ES2) and a bored tunnel (complete with abandoned TBM) in close proximity to a ticket hall excavation (see Figure 1) and a sensitive, listed railway structure. Faced with this complex geometry, and combined with challenging geotechnical conditions (Gakis et al 2015), the team chose to install enhanced monitoring to study the behavior of tunnel RTE2 and provide additional assurance that the tunnels were performing as predicted. Applying advanced 3D numerical modelling and taking into account the residual tensile strength of the SCL helped avoid unnecessary reinforcement installation in primary lining and/or early installation of a secondary lining in RTE2 prior to ES2 construction."

Most tunnels built in Sydney encounter similar ground situations; they penetrate either the Hawkesbury Sandstone or the shales that lie beneath the city. Tunnels in these materials are generally sup-ported by rock bolts in combination with a shotcrete lining. A method of analysis is presented to improve our understanding of the long term behaviour of fiber reinforced shotcrete (FRS) materials and the tunnel support systems. A finite element method SAFEA (Semi-analytical FE Analysis) is developed to model the combined creep behaviour of a shotcrete lining and the Hawkesbury Sandstone. To model the time-dependent creep behaviour, the bulk modulus and shear modulus of the materials are represented by logarithmic functions in time. A Laplace transform is then applied to these functions of time and the solution of the problem found from a finite element analysis. Tablot?s method is then used to invert the transformed values and find the solution in real time. The time dependent creep deflection of the numerical tunnel models reflects the interaction of the shotcrete lining and rock which have different creep parameters.

Diatomite is a siliceous, sedimentary rock consisting principally of the fossilized skeletal remains of the diatom, a unicellular aquatic plant related to the algae. Thus, it has been formed by the induration of diatomaceous ooze, and consists mainly of diatomaceous silica, a form or variety of opal which is first formed in the cell walls of the living diatom. Diatomaceous silica is not generally regarded as a synonym or the equivalent for diatomite, although it has been so used at various times. Accurately, diatomaceous silica is the preferred name for the principal mineral component of which the rock, diatomite, is composed. The terms diatomaceous earth and kieselguhr are used as synonymous with diatomite. The designations tripoli, tripolite, infusorial earth, etc., were used at one time but are now obsolete. With the changing nomenclature, these terms that were at one time correct when proposed and used for generations would be considered incorrect if used today in the light of current knowledge. The designation diatomite is reserved for those accumulations of diatomaceous silica that are of sufficient quality, size, and minability to be considered of potential commercial value. Processed diatomite possesses an unusual particulate structure and chemical stability that lends itself to applications not filled by any other form of silica. Foremost among these applications is its use as a filter aid, which accounts for over half of its current consumption. Its unique diatom structure, low bulk density, high absorptive capacity, high surface area, and relatively low abrasion are attributes responsible for its utility as a functional filler and as an extender in paint, paper, rubber, and in plastics; and as an anti-caking agent; thermal insulating material; catalyst carrier; and chromatographic support; polish, abrasive, and pesticide extender to name a few representative applications. The United States is the principal producing country, although diatomite is found in numerous other locations. Geology Composition and Morphology Diatomaceous silica qualifies as a. mineral of organic origin in much the same way that aragonite and collophane do. The silica of the fossilized diatom skeleton closely resembles opal or hydrous silica in composition (SiO2 • nH2O) .4, 12, 203 The silica is of acute biological significance, not only for the cell wall component, but also for the basic life process.45, 51 Without silica, cell development ceases .31 In addition to bound water, varying between 3.5 and 8%, the siliceous skeleton may also contain, in solid solution, or as part of the Si02 complex, small amounts of associated inorganic components-alumina, principally-and lesser amounts of iron, 46, 49, 55 alkaline earths, alkali metals, and other minor constituents.59, 63, 67 Boron is reported to be an essential element for diatom growth .52, 58 Since diatomaceous silica is not pure hydrous silica but contains other intimately associated elements, there is good reason to consider it a distinct type or variety.4 Associated with the diatomaceous silica, and integrated as part of the diatomite, may be variable amounts of organic matter, soluble salts, and particles of rock-forming minerals that were syngenetically deposited or precipitated with the diatom frustules. Sand, clay, carbonate, and volcanic ash are typical common contaminants. Other contaminating minerals may be present, such as feldspar, mica, amphiboles, pyroxenes, rutile, zircon-the result of weathering, then transporting, and subsequent redeposition of surrounding land masses. "INTRODUCTION This report describes a method of horizontal drilling in an oil-producing formation underlying a 400-acre, approximately square plot of land in the Franklin Heavy oil field in Sugar Creek Township, Venango County, Pa. The method, which was developed on two previous projects in Ohio, 3/ consists of sinking a shaft to the bottom of a shallow oil sand and drilling holes in a general horizontal plane outward from the chamber in a pattern similar to that of the spokes of a wheel. The project was undertaken by the Venango Development Corporation in an attempt to find an efficient method of recovering oil from partly depleted sand formations.The Venango Development Corporation is composed of the following oil-producing and oil-refining companies and individuals: South Penn Oil Co., Forest Oil Corporation, Kendall Refining Co., Minard Run Oil Co., Quaker State Oil Refining Co., The Pennzoil Co., Alliance Oil Corpo¬ration, United Refining Co., Franklin Creek Refining Corporation, Canfield Oil Co., Pennsylvania Refining Co., Page Oil Co., Freedom Oil Co., D. W. and D. S. Grant, and J. P. Herrick, C. M. Davison and N. V. V. Franchot. Engineering features of the project were supervised by a committee off three engineers A. J. Saxe, chairman, W. M. Shoemaker, and C. N. Pfohl, who supervised the excavation of the shaft and the drilling of the first two holes by alternately spending a week at a. time at the project. The drilling method was under patent license from Leo Ranney, who served as technical advisor to the Venango Development Corporation; in addition, he furnished the design for the shaft and work chamber."

The purposes, types, preparation, and testing of flocculants are discussed. A flocculation compendium is included, indicating choice of flocculant for a given set of conditions. An economic evaluation of the process is presented. Solid-liquid separation is a major expense in most mineral processing flowsheets today. Proper use of flocculation can often lower the overall cost of a solid-liquid separation by reducing the size of sedimentation or filtration equipment. PURPOSE OF FLOCCULATION When is use of a flocculant justified in terms of overall process economy? 1) when it results in process improvement, such as producing a clear liquor for electrolysis, precipitation, ion exchange, or solvent extraction; 2) when it results in satisfying requirements of pollution abatement ordinances; 3) when it results in increased recovery of values that would otherwise be lost; or 4) when it results in considerable savings in capital expenditure due to use of smaller equipment. When can the use of a flocculant adversely effect overall process economy? 1) when it results in increased filter cake moisture, 2) when it results in decreased filtration rates, 3) when it results in considerable bulking of sedimentation underflow, 4) when it contaminates either the supernatant or sludge, or 5) when the cost of using the flocculant is greater than the savings due to its use. First step in consideration of flocculants for a given application is establishment of desired goals in terms of increased clarity of effluent, increased recovery of solids, or decreased size of equipment. The most economical solution to a solid-liquid separation problem is that combination of equipment and flocculant costs which meets the established goals at the lowest total annual expenditure. This economic decision can be made only after technical data has been obtained as outlined in next four sections. TYPES OF FLOCCULATION Flocculation is a process wherein individual particles are united into more or less tightly bound agglomerates or flocs, thereby increasing effective particle size of solids suspended in a liquid. Degree of flocculation of a suspension of finely divided solids in a liquid is controlled by a combination of probability of collision between particles and probability of adhesion after the collision has occurred.' Probability of collision can be increased commercially through use of a paddle-type flocculator, combination flocculator, and clarifier or flocculating-type feedwell. Probability of adhesion usually can be increased by addition of a reagent known as a flocculant. Reagents act as flocculants through one or a combination of three possible mechanisms. The first is electrolytic neutralization of inter molecular repulsive force due to Zeta potential. This neutralization enables Van der Waal's cohesive force to hold the particles together after they collide.' The second is the precipitation, within a definite pH range, of voluminous metallic hydroxide flocs which entrap fine particles. This process is known as coagulation.14 Third is the bridging of two or more particles by either natural or synthetic long-chain, high-molecular-weight organic polymers. This bridging is accomplished by adsorption of two particles at different sites on the same molecule or by bonding of two molecules, each adsorbed to a different particle. Considerable effort has been expended in explaining the action of these polyelec-trolytes and detailed accounts are available in the literature. CHOICE OF FLOCCULANTS It is impossible, at the present time, to specify the optimum type or amount of flocculant for a given application from a knowledge of the material to be treated. The standard procedure is to choose reagents or combination of reagents most likely to be effective on the slurry; then test them.' The accompanying Flocculation Compendium (Table I) contains details of all currently available reagents sold as flocculants and it should be used when selecting the group of reagents for tests. This project, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Division of Environment, addresses two major subjects: refuse removal and subsidence monitoring. The refuse removal task consisted of developing a methodology for selecting the most economical combinations of coal mine breaker refuse and rock banks, disposal sites and material moving systems (trucks, trains, belt conveyers and pipelines). To prepare plans for moving refuse in the Lackawanna Valley of Northeastern Pennsylvania, refuse banks were inventoried, underground disposal sites identified and unit cost data prepared for the various material moving systems. The subsidence monitoring task consisted of defining the phenomenon of coal mine induced surface subsidence, establishing operational requirements, cataloging sensors and techniques to detect and measure subsidence and testing of the most promising techniques (photoelastic patch, tiltmeter, strain gage, microseismic and precise surveying). A preliminary system for a 700 acre area in Scranton utilizing 267 grid sensors, seven microseismic sensors and precise surveying techniques was designed with initial and annual operating costs determined. Two minor tasks supported both main subjects: zoning in the Northern Anthracite Field of Pennsylvania and Technology Transfer of subsidence vulnerability prediction techniques.

To determine their effectiveness in different climate and soil conditions, a demonstration of dozer blades specifically designed for recontouring mine spoil was conducted at an East Texas surface coal mine. The specialized equipment included a 48-foot angle blade, a modified 24-foot "U" blade, a 13-foot deep "U" blade, and a 24-foot grading bar. Both the 4b-foot and the 24-foot "U" blades were mounted in a two-tractor, single-operator configuration. To meet flotation problems common in this mining region, a 22-foot lightweight blade was developed and demonstrated for use on a 400-430 hp tractor. The demonstration involved 1,185 acres and showed a 50% reduction in reclamation costs and a 47% reduction in fuel requirements for this mine site over conventional equipment. Improved equipment, trained operators, good supervision, and improved monitoring techniques contributed to the savings. Procedures and results of the demonstration are presented and analyzed here along with guidelines for application of findings.

The appraisal of mineral resources of the Challis National Forest, Idaho, by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, was made so that the mineral resources of the forest could be appropiately considered in land use planning. Information from this study is intended to tip the U.S. Forest Service to incorporate mineral resource data into forest plans The study was done in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which released a companion report on the geology and mineral potential of the Challis National Forest in 1989. This summary report is derived from a more detailed USBM Open-File Report (MLA 6-91) that includes descriptions of mines and prospects, commodity profiles, and development cost models. Since the 1860's mines within the Challis National Forest have produced mineral commodities worth more than $590 million at current (1989) commodity prices. Identified mineral resources have a gross value of about $2 billion at current prices, including 8 strategic or critical minerals. The U.S. Bureau of Mines study identified and described 723 active and inactive mineral properties within the forest. Mineral properties with identified resources were evaluate to determine their economic significance, and an assessment was made of the feasibility of mineral development. Of the 2,516,191 acres in the Challis National Forest, about 390,000 acres were classified as having mining development interest. Commercially important mineral production, mainly of molybdenum, gold, and silver from the Challis National Forest is likely for the foreseeable future.

Since the 1980s, heap leaching of gold and silver ores has been developing rapidly and experienced widespread use in China because of its lower capital and operating costs, less time consumed in construction and specific applicability to small-to-medium scale mining operations and low grade ores. Ores treated include ordinary oxidized ores, refractory sulfide ores and even those containing deleterious elements (such as arsenic or antimony) and/or carbonaceous substances. In addition to chemical leaching agents, some micro-organisms (e.g. T-ferrooxidians and T-thiooxixians) and their biochemistry mechanism have been equally emphasized. To overcome the adverse effect caused by excessive content of fines and slimes, research and pilot experiments of agglomeration-heap leaching are currently underway at two gold mines in South China and their encouraging preliminary achievements will be briefly described as illustrations in this paper. It could be expected that heap leaching of gold and silver ores holds promise and will play an increasingly important role in China's gold industry.

The surface properties exhibited by bituminous coal and bituminous coal lithotypes were ascertained by using streaming potential techniques. The electro kinetic prop-erties wereascertainederties of bituminous coal were found to be similar to those of anthracite. The principle electrokinetic properties of the coal and lithotypes, zero-points-of-charge (ZPC), and potential determining ions, were established. The effects of indifferent electrolytes, hydronium and hydroxyl ion sources, and polyvalent ions (cationic and anionic) were also evaluated. Location of the ZPC's with respect to pH is discussed in terms of chemical and mineralogical composition of the respective surfaces. To account for the observed electrokinetic phenomena, a generalized surface model and adsorption mechanism are proposed. Surface-dependent processes, such as froth flotation and flocculation, are important or potentially important techniques for combating some of the current major problems in coal preparation. In order to correctly apply or improve a surface-dependent process, it is of paramount importance to understand the interfacial phenomenon, especially the double layer properties, exhibited by the solid. The specific objective of this research was to determine the properties of the bituminous coal/liquid interface by an electrokinetic method, streaming potential, and to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the existing unit operations of froth flotation and floccula-tion tion. The electrokinetic properties of both the whole coal and its lithotypes were investigated. As part of the total investigation, the role played in the double layer by the reagents commonly employed in the surface dependent process was also established.' These data will be presented at a later date. Experimental Procedures The coal samples used in this research and their designations are listed in Table 1. The classical description of humic coal lithotypes as developed by Stopes" was used for the delineation of the lithotype samples. The samples were taken from the working face of a producing deep mine of the Pittsburgh seam in the area of Ellsworth, Pa. To avoid oxidation, only freshly exposed areas were sampled. The normal precautions against contamination were also exercised. Two types of samples were taken, specimens rich in a particular lithotype and a representative channel sample. The latter sample was prepared for analyses by grinding it to —35 mesh. It was screened repeatedly during the grinding to provide the largest amount of 35 x 48-mesh (standard Tyler sieves) material possible. The screened fraction was passed over a magnet and then washed several times with distilled water and finally with conductivity water. The resulting sample now termed "whole coal" was stored under conductivity water in a glass bottle. Pure lithotypes were obtained from the lithotype concentrates by hand picking, and were processed in the same manner as the representative sample. Maceral analyses, employing standard petrographic procedures," were performed on the lithotype samples to determine the purity of the samples. The results are presented in Table 2. Reflectance measurements of the vitrinites and fusinites are also reported in this table. Proximate and ultimate analyses of the samples are given in Tables 3 and 4. The electrokinetic properties of the coal samples were determined by streaming potential methods.'-' All of the chemicals used in the investigation were reagent grade (Baker analyzed). The conductivity water was prepared by doubly distilling the water in a pyrex Yoe-type still and passing the distillate through a mixed bed ion exchange column. Results In general, the electrokinetic properties of the investigated bituminous coal were found to be similar to the results of a previous study of anthracite by Camp-bell bell5 and are in accord with the suppositions of Brown." The zeta potentials of the coal and all the lithotypes were found to be negative in conductivity water. Jowett? in a study of slime coatings on coal also found bituminous coal to exhibit a negative surface. Fig. 1 shows that the negative charges, at neutral pH's, for both fusain and the gangue are very small, almost zero, while at the same pH, vitrain has the largest negative charge, almost 30 mv. Durain has a negative charge of 17.5 mv. The determination of the affect of pH on the charge of the coal surfaces revealed that hydronium and hydroxyl ions apparently behave as potential determining ions; however, they do not appear to be potential determining for the gangue. In the presence of oxygen, galena is oxidized in an aqueous medium containing ammonium acetate in accordance with the following reaction: PbS + 1/2 0, + 2 NH~Ac -» PbAc, + So + 2 NH: + H2O. This reaction was studied in an autoclave under oxygen pressure by polarographic measurement of the concentration of lead ion in solution. Oxidation rate is parabolic. The reaction products are lead acetote and elemental sulfur, the latter forming a film on the galena crystal. Reaction kinetics appear to be determined by the diffusion of lead from the galena phase to the solution interface through the film of sulfur. RECENT applications of pressure leaching on a commercial scale have emphasized the metallurgical importance of the oxidation of sulfide minerals in aqueous media by oxygen under pressure. Research experience has shown that sulfates, thio-nates, and metal oxides are the products of humid oxidation of sulfide minerals in basic solutions. The metal oxides may be solubilized in the presence of a complexing ion.' Certain oxide minerals are also amenable to treatment by this type of oxidation.' Several kinetic studies have been made of reactions of this type. Stenhouse' found that pyrite (FeS?) oxidized in a sodium hydroxide solution to produce a soluble sulfate and an insoluble layer of iron oxide and that the kinetics of the reaction were controlled by oxygen diffusion through the oxide layer. Andersen' studied the oxidation of galena (PbS) in a sodium hydroxide solution under oxygen pressure. He found the lead and sulfur to be simultaneously oxidized to produce plum bite ions and sulfate ions, and that the reaction rate was proportional to the surface area of the galena. The kinetics appeared to be determined by the reaction of oxygen and water with the galena surface. In each of the above reactions the metal and sulfur components of the mineral were oxidized simultaneously and at equal rates. In the present study the alkaline medium has been replaced by an approximately neutral solution of ammonium acetate in which lead sulfate is soluble. Under the conditions no sulfate was produced and no sulfur could be detected in the solution. The metal component of the mineral was solubilized and the liberated sulfur remained as a film of elemental sulfur on the surface of the galena crystal. A kinetic study of this reaction was undertaken to establish the kinetic mechanism and to determine the rate controlling step. Specific reaction rates were determined by oxidizing crystals of galena of measured surface areas in an autoclave maintained at the desired temperature and oxygen pressure. The rate of reaction was followed by measuring the concentration of lead in the ammonium acetate solution with a cathode ray polarograph, employing stationary platinum electrodes incorporated in the autoclave. MUCH work has been done dealing with the effect of mechanical stress on electrode potential in an electrochemical system. The contradictory nature of the experimental results indicates the complexity of the problem although thermodynamic considerations show that a simple relationshir, should exist. In those systems where a gas was the electromotive active substance satisfactory agreement between theory and practice has been found. Des Coudres' found this to be so even when the active substance of the electrode, in this case mercury, was in the liquid state. In contrast, attempts to correlate theory and experiment for the solid state have met with a very limited success. The early workers in this field, Andrews,2 Walker and Dill3 used iron, certainly one of the most reactive of metals. Others have made use of less active metals such as copper and nickel. Recently Fryxell and Nachtrieb4 investigated the electrochemical behavior of gold and silver under both tensile and compressive stresses and concluded that it was doubtful whether true stress potentials could ever be measured. Much of the lack of success to measure the thermodynamic stress potential can be ascribed to the presence or formation of a complex film on the metal surface in contact with the electrolyte. Further, the theoretical stress potential is very small and therefore difficult to measure directly. Thus the calculated emf between a 24 B & S gage cold-drawn copper wire stressed with a weight of 1 kg and an unstressed portion of the same wire is only 2.60 X 10"7 volts. This is very small compared to that which can be produced by chemical reactions at the metal electrolyte interface which in turn can be so large as to mask completely the stress potential. Hence in this type of measurement all chemical side effects must be eliminated or reduced as much as possible. It was for this reason that the system copper-sodium chloride solution was selected for study. INSTRUMENTATION In the many preliminary experiments conducted, two major difficulties were encountered. The first was to measure the small electro-potentials to be expected and the second to obtain a suitable electrode surface. The conventional potentiometric method was found to be unsatisfactory for measuring the small emf expected. However, by using an L & N No. 2290 galvanometer having a resistance of 915 ohms consistent measurements were possible. The reference electrode was always the unstressed one made from the same sample of wire. The steady current flow was approximately 10-8 amp. Lewis and Randell5 have stated that for currents of the order of 10-8, if there is no sensible polarization, the measured emf may be taken as a reversible one. To check the galvanomenter readings an alternative method was devised to measure the potential difference between the wires. This involved a Liston-Falb d-c breaker amplifier model 10, an L & N k-2 potentiometer and a moving-coil galvanometer having a sensitivity greater than 0.1 µv (microvolt) per mm. To increase further the output voltage of the amplifier a d-c amplifier, model B. L.-932 was introduced into the circuit. This amplifier was in turn connected to a Brush recorder which had been calibrated previously by the test signals from the Liston-Falb instrument. These test voltages employed took into account the impedance of the input current. Unfortunately, this method had too low a sensitivity for measurement below 10 µv. Above this value the voltage agreed reasonably well with those obtained directly by the simple galvanometer method. The main advantage of the amplifier setup was that one did not have to wait until no deflection occurred on the galvanometer in the circuit when first exposing the wires to the solu-

IN the last several years the coal industry has intensified its effort to solve the growing problem of cleaning and recovering fine mesh coals. On one hand these has been increasing civic pressure for cleaner streams, and on the other hand there has been increasing production of fine mesh coal, resulting directly from adoption of the modern mining methods so essential to the economy of the coal mining industry. Cleaning fine coal with the same precision possible with coarser coals is a difficult task, and for coals finer than 200 mesh it has been impractical. Furthermore, the inclusion of —200 mesh material in the final product markedly increases costs of de-watering and thermal drying, which are necessary steps if coal is to meet market requirements. Consequently these extreme fines have generally been wasted. As a result, problems have been created in many districts because there has not been enough area for adequate settling basins. Wasting of coal in the -200 mesh slimes may account for a loss in washer yield equivalent to 2.0 to 2.5 pct of the raw coal input. With rising mining costs the value of such a loss is constantly increasing and a need for a better solution to the fines problem becomes more pressing every day. From an operating viewpoint, also, continuous removal of extreme fines from the washing plant circuit permits good water clarification practice, improving significantly the overall cleaning efficiency. The obvious desirability of recovering a commercially acceptable coal from washery slimes prompted U. S. Steel Corp. to investigate the merits of the Convertol process developed in Germany." Although this process has been used commercially in Europe for some time, little if any consideration has been given to its possible adoption in the U. S. until very recently. Fundamentals of the Convertol Process: In the Convertol process, droplets of dispersed oil are brought into intimate contact with the solids suspended in the coal slurry to be treated. This contact causes oil to displace the water on the surface of the coal by preferential wetting, or phase inversion, after which the coal particles are allowed to agglomerate in a manner permitting their re- moval from the slurry by centrifugal filtration. The clay and other particles of mineral matter suspended in the slurry do not have the affinity for oil the coal particles have. Consequently the oil treatment is preferential to coal to the extent that more than 95 pct of the oil used reports with the clean coal recovered. Figs. 1 through 3 will clarify the steps involved in the process. Fig. 1 shows the suspended material in the slurry to be treated, which is a thickened product containing 40 to 45 pct solids. Oil is now injected into the slurry under vigorous agitation to produce good oil to coal contact conditions, which result in preferential oiling of the coal particles. These coal particles are then permitted to agglomerate by gentle stirring in a conditioner to form flocs, as shown in Fig. 2. At this point in the process the agglomerated oiled coal can be washed and partially dewatered on a vibrating screen, as shown in Fig. 3. Finally, the washed flocculate can be further dewatered in a high-speed screen basket centrifuge or in a solid bowl centrifuge. Commercial Application of the Convertol Process in Germany: The original Convertol process was developed by Bergwerksverband zur Verwertung von Schutzrechten der Kohlentechnik, G.m.b.H., a German research organization controlled by the Coal Operators Assn. of the Ruhr Valley. The process as reduced to commercial practice in Germany' is shown in Fig. 4. In this process a thickened slurry (40 to 45 pct solids) mixed with a predetermined percentage of oil is fed from a surge tank to the phase inversion mill. After the phase inversion step, the slurry is usually discharged directly to a highspeed screen centrifuge. From 3 to 10 pct oil is used, depending on type of oil, size consist of coal to be recovered, and operating temperature. The top size of fine coal cleaned in Germany by the Convertol process is limited by the size of the openings in the centrifuge screen basket. Any mineral matter coarser than the basket opening, which is generally 60 to 80 mesh, must remain with the oiled coal. If the coal fines have been effectively cleaned down to about 80 mesh, the cleaning performance of the process is practically unaffected by the presence of coarse coal particles. However, since recovery of coal much coarser than 80 mesh is mow economical by conventional methods, it normally becomes more costly to allow substantial percentages of this coarse coal in Convertol process feed. Where the general plant layout does not permit effective cleaning of coal sizes down to 80 mesh or lower. there is some justification for a coarser Con-

Oriented, oxygen-doped niobium bicrystals were tested in liquid lithium. The grain boundaries were attacked preferentially. The depth of the penetrated zone varies as (time)2. The penetration was aniso-tropic, had a high activation energy, and increased with the increased oxygen doping level. A possible model was proposed to account for the experimental observations. 1 HE grain boundary penetration of a metallic system by liquid metal has been studied by several investigators. Their results are summarized by Bishop.' Most of these works show that the penetration by liquid metal corresponds to the phenomenon of liquid metal wetting. In the case of a grain boundary, wetting will occur when twice the solid-liquid interfacial tension is smaller than the grain boundary tension resulting in the replacement of the grain boundary by two new solid-liquid interfaces. Other possibilities exist; for example, the atoms of the liquid metal may diffuse into the grain boundary region due to chemical potential gradient. The gradient can be produced by impurity segregation or simply be due to the increase in solubility in the grain boundary region. The penetrated grain boundary in these cases may remain solid at the test temperature. The Nb-Li system has been of considerable interest because of its possible technological applications. For fundamental interest it provides a possibility of studying the grain boundary penetration process which is not controlled by the wetting mechanism. The pure niobium is not attacked by the liquid lithium, but if niobium containing more than 300 to 500 ppm oxygen by weight is exposed to liquid lithium, corrosion occurs at the solid-liquid interface and preferentially at grain boundaries. Previous investigators2-' have proposed that this preferential corrosion at grain boundaries is caused by oxygen segregation there, with subsequent inward diffusion of lithium to form a Li-Nb-0 compound. These investigators also found that the corrosion could be retarded by adding 1 pct Zr to the niobium to precipitate the oxygen as ZrO2 upon proper heat treatment. However, there are no quantitative data on the kinetics of the grain boundary penetration process to test the validity of the proposed corrosion mechanism. In this work an investigation of this penetration process in oriented bicrystals was made as a function of the oxygen doping level in the bulk niobium and the grain boundary orientation. A possible model for the penetration process based on the experimental results was proposed. EXPERIMENTS Oriented niobium bicrystals were grown by arc-zone melting oriented single-crystal seeds.7 These bicrystals contained simple tilt boundary. The [001] directions in the two grains were tilted about a common [110]. The bicrystals were 31/2 in. long and 5 by 4 in. in cross section with the straight, symmetric, planar grain boundary longitudinally bisecting the crystal rod. The bicrystals were doped with oxygen by anodically depositing a layer of Nb2O on the surface in a 70 pct HNO solution at 100 v, using a stainless-steel cathode. The specimens were homogenized by annealing in evacuated quartz tubes at 127 5°C. Oxygen content of the niobium was measured from microhardness values, after DiStefano and Litmman.' Supplementary checks were made with vacuum-fusion analysis.7 Individual test specimens cut from the doped bi-crystal rods, about by by % in. in size, were tested inside double jacket sealed capsules. The inner jacket was niobium, the outer was stainless steel. The niobium inner jacket eliminated the problem of dissimilar-metal mass transfer.' The lithium (99.8 pct pure, obtained from Lithium Corp. of America) was handled only in a purified argon atmosphere in a Blickman stainless-steel glove box. After introduction of lithium, the capsules were sealed by welding. Further detailed experimental procedures are given in Ref. 7. The capsules were heat-treated in vertical Marshall resistance furnaces. Temperatures were controlled to When heating above 1100°C, it was necessary to seal the furnace work tube and flow argon through to prevent failure of the stainless-steel outer jacket of the capsule. Tests were made on 6" 2", 16" 2, and 33" i2" bicrystals at oxygen levels up to 2600 ppm by weight in the 6' and 16" crystals and with 1300 ppm oxygen in the 33' crystals. The oxygen levels were controlled to 100 ppm. Most of the quantitative data were obtained from 16" bicrystals between 800" and 1050°C. The capsules were quenched into water after the test and cut open with a water-cooled abrasive wheel. The capsules were then submerged in water, which dissolved the lithium and freed the specimen. Measurement of the depth of the penetrated zone in the grain boundary was done either on metallographically prepared surfaces or directly on the grain boundary plane after the specimen was fractured in tension in the grain boundary plane. The depth of penetration measured by both methods agreed well. Further details describing these techniques have been reported elsewhere.'p7

Contract H0177044 included three objectives; (1) consolidate, maintain, and distribute information on STE approved lighting systems; (2) develop and present one-day seminars on underground mine lighting; (3) determine direct labor and hardware costs associated with the installation of mine illumination systems. All objectives were completed with results as follows: Task I - A file containing 1350 Statements of Test and Evaluation (STE) for all types of underground equipment was developed and publicized throughout the coal fields, A total of 40 requests for STE information was received and processed. Task II and III - A series of 50 seminars was scheduled and presented to 942 attendees throughout the coal fields. The seminars were well received and attendees indicated the information presented would be helpful in bringing their equipment into compliance. Holding a series of seminars in the coal fields, instead of a few in population centers, was favored by attendees. Task IV - Installation cost data obtained on 415 lighting systems indicate that the factors which most affect installation costs are higher hardware cost for DC powered systems and slightly higher manpower requirements for systems installed underground. Based on these data, the total cost to industry of retrofitting existing underground equipment could range up to $50 million.

INTRODUCTION Use of air-cooling or refrigeration equipment in underground mines is needed when conventional ventila¬tion techniques do not maintain acceptable environ¬mental temperatures in working areas. Because refrig¬eration can be very expensive, it should be implemented only after all possible and practical steps have been taken to eliminate or reduce heat sources in the mine. As an example, to prevent the main ventilation fans from contributing heat to mine air, they should be located in the air return and not in the air intake. It is particularly important to prevent any direct contact between hot water and ventilation air, especially in mines which encounter large flows of hot fissure water. Any water hotter than the prevailing wet-bulb temperature of the ambient air must be removed by pipes located as close as possible to the water source. This hot water must not be allowed free contact with the incoming ventilation air at any time during the water's passage out of the mine. Although insulation of the pipes carrying the hot water is seldom necessary, direct contact between the air and the water must be prevented so the warm water cannot evaporate. REVIEW OF COOLING PRACTICES Spot Coolers vs. Centralized Refrigeration To eliminate a few specific hot places in an otherwise cool mine, it is possible to use devices known as "spot coolers." A typical spot cooler that uses chilled water is shown in Fig. 1. These devices consist of self-contained refrigeration units that are often mounted on rail cars for haulage to hot spots. The cooling capacities of such spot coolers usually are limited to about 100 kW or 30 "refrigeration tons." A refrigeration ton represents a cooling rate that produces 1.0 st of ice in 24 hr; that is a cooling rate of 3.517 kW (200 Btu per min). Typically, the electric-power consumption to drive the compressor motor of the refrigeration plant in mines is 1.0 kW per refrigeration ton, corresponding to a coefficient of per¬formance of about 3.5. The principal difference between spot coolers and centralized refrigeration plants is the method of re¬jecting heat from the refrigeration system. Centralized refrigeration plants always discharge heat into the reject or return airflow of the mine; often that is the primary influence in selecting the location for the underground refrigeration plant. Heat from spot coolers usually is rejected into drain water or into air that is not flowing to the location requiring the cooling. As a result, spot coolers remove heat from troublesome hot spots in the mine, injecting that heat-plus the electrical energy used by the cooling unit itself-into other working areas where the ambient conditions are cooler. In effect, this is "robbing Peter to pay Paul." In deep, extensive mines, spot coolers usually pro¬vide only temporary and, over the long term, expensive solutions to localized cooling problems. Centralized re¬frigeration plants are preferred for such mines, with cooling distributed throughout the mine as required. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical underground centralized re¬frigeration plant. Centralized plants lend themselves to improved maintenance at reduced costs while offering the economy of size. Refrigeration plants of larger unit sizes have considerably lower initial costs than smaller unit sizes. The remainder of this chapter is devoted to large refrigeration plants, with no further consideration of spot coolers. Cost of Refrigeration Total Cost: The total cost of refrigeration amounts to about $200/kW of cooling per year (1981 US $). This total cost breaks down into approximately three equal parts: 1) Financial charges, which include the interest and amortization on the capital cost of the initial installation, and the cost of necessary underground excavations. 2) Operating and maintenance costs which include the cost of the electric power to drive the refrigeration plant's compressors. 3) Distribution costs which include costs for pump¬ing, insulated piping, and air-to-water heat exchangers. The local cost of electric power, the number of operating months per year, and the method of refrigera¬tion distribution all contribute to the actual costs in¬curred in a given application. However, the variations usually are limited to no more than ±30% of the $200/ kW per year total cost figure. Cost Per Ton: Refrigeration cost per ton of mineral production can be calculated if the annual production tonnage from the refrigerated section of the mine is known. In most cases, this cost will be less than $1 .00/t. However, in deep mines with high rock temperatures, such as those found in South Africa, the total cost of refrigeration can increase to several dollars per ton of broken rock. Published correlations for the principal aspects of hydraulic fracturing were combined into a digital computer program to facilitate the study of interrelated variables. The computer program includes individual relationships for fracture width during pumping, fracture area generated, propping agent embedment, flow capacities of propped fractures and transport of propping agents in horizontal fractures. The effects of more than 20 treatment and formation parameters on the predicted results of hydraulic fracturing treatments were studied. The effects of these parameters were determined for (I) fracture width during injection, (2) fracture width after the overburden comes to rest on the propping agents, assumed not to be crushed, (3) generated and propped fracture area, (4) location and concentration of propping agents in the fracture when injection ceases, (5) flow capacities of the various propped sections of the fracture and (6) expected increase in the well productivity. The effects of propping agent, formation and fracturing fluid parameters on well productivity are discussed. The parameters that were found to have the most pronounced effects on hydraulic fracturing treat~nents are injection rate, treatment volume, fracturing fluid coefficient, size and amount of propping agent, spearhead volume, well drainage radius and formation capacity. INTRODUCTION Many correlations have been published for predicting effects of various parameters that are considered in the design of hydraulic fracturing treatments. The Carter equation' can be used to predict generated fracture radius as a function of fracture width, fracturing fluid leakoff and other parameters. Fracture width can be determined by use of the Perkins and Kern correlation' in which the fracture width is related to the fracture radius, fluid injection rate and certain formation and fracturing fluid parameters. Wahl and Lowe et aL4 have reported methods of predicting the location of propping agents in fractures when pumping ceases. The former study is applicable to the case where the ratio of propping agent diameter to fracture width is less than 0.1. The latter is applicable when this ratio is greater than 0.1. These studies showed that the propping agent placement in horizontal-radial fractures depends principally on how the individual particles are transported in the fracture by the carrying fluid. Particle transport in fractures is determined by local fluid velocity in the fracture, fluid and particle properties, and the size of the particle relative to the fracture width. The distribution of propping agents, effective overburden pressure and formation rock strength control the propped fracture width6 by controlling the extent to which the propping agent particles embed into the fracture faces. From the distribution of propping agents and the propped fracture width, fracture flow capacities can be calculated or the various regions of the fracture. The flow capacities and the radial extent of these regions can be combined with reservoir information to predict the productivity increases for fractured wells. In all these studies, the effects of certain treatment and/ or reservoir parameters on one facet of fracturing can be predicted only if other facets which the parameters affect are fixed. For instance, fracture width and radius are interrelated; that is, to calculate the value of one, the value of the other must be known. Also, some parameters influence more than one aspect of fracturing. For example, prop-pant transport is a function of both fracture width and fluid viscosity. but fracture width is itself a function of fluid viscosity. Since these calculations are complex and the parameters interrelated, it is not possible to write an equation with which the over-all effects of treatment parameters can be solved explicitly. For these reasons, the correlations for determining the effects of the parameters which are most significant in hydraulic fracturing treatments have been incorporated into a digital computer program. COMPUTER PROGRAM The program, which was written for an IBM 7094 computer, can be used to predict results of most of the combinations and values for the treatment parameters that are ordinarily considered for fracturing treatments. A spearhead of fracturing fluid and a propping agent-carrying fluid with different fluid properties can be taken into account. Also, the total volumes and relative amounts of the spearhead and carrying fluids can be varied. Two different propping agents (as used in tail-in operations) and a wide range of formation properties and injection rates are considered. The computer program (Fig. 12) consists of several sets of calculations. First, the final flooded fracture radius and average fracture width at the cessation of pumping are calculated. This is done by simultaneous solution of the Perkins and Kern fracture width equation and the Carter equation for flooded fracture radius (equations used in the computer program appear in the Appendix). The next step is to determine local fluid velocity in the fracture as a function of time and radius. In the last decade, the copper industry in China has developed rapidly and attracted the world’s attention. The production capacity of refined copper has grown remarkably from 4.578 million tons in 2010 up to 9.029 million tons in 2018, accounting for about 40% of the global refined copper production. And now, China has become the biggest refined copper producer in the world. This paper summarizes the application of modern copper metallurgical technologies such as Outotec flash smelting/converting technology, Cyclone smelting technology, TSL (ISA/Ausmelt) smelting/converting technology, Jinfeng side blown smelting and Baiyin side blown smelting technology, Chifeng side blown smelting and continuous top blown converting technology, SKS bottom blowing technology, Dongying two-step smelting technology, copper electrorefining with high current density, etc. in China’s copper industry, analyzes and compares the characteristics of those technologies and presents the great efforts of China’s copper smelters in adapting to the increasingly strict emission standards and improving economic benefits of copper smelters. INTRODUCTION China has been the biggest refined copper producer in the world for many years. China produced million tons of refined copper in 2018, accounting for 40% of the copper smelting production in the world, and of which, roughly, 70% of the copper concentrate was imported, mainly from Chile, Peru and Australia. ICSG (International Copper Study Group, 2017) shows clearly the position of top 20 countries of copper production and copper mine production (Figures 1 and 2). Blast Furnaces, Reverb Furnaces and Electric Furnaces dominated China Copper Smelting for quite long time till 1980s. The first modern copper smelting technology (flash copper smelting) was introduced into China in 1980s, then followed by Noranda, Ausmelt and ISA. Since then, China copper smelting technology stepped into modern time. Since 2000, old processes (Blast Furnace, Reverb Furnaces and Electric Furnaces) were phased out and replaced by modern smelting technologies. China Copper Production has been increasing dramatically (Figure 3).
