Aiming at the recovery of copper from smelting slag, a flotation approach was studied. It was found that this slag composed of fine particles with complex association and distribution, in which bornite was the main copper-bearing mineral after a detailed mineralogy analysis via polarizing microscope, SEM and XRD. Consequently, flotation was attempted to recycle Cu in slag containing copper sulphide components. Three key factors affecting flotation were ascertained, namely, grinding fineness, the collector and the pH value, while the recovery of Cu estimated by ICP and XRF. Copper concentrate grading at 14.47 with 79.66% Cu recovery was obtained, in the condition of the grinding fineness of −0.074 mm and the proportion of 80%, reagent dosages of 50 g/t for butyl xanthate and a pH value of 10 adjusted using Na2CO3.

Deep gas and oil production has been substantially increased over prolonged periods through the use of sintered bauxite propping agents. Since its inception in 1976, over 170,000,000 pounds of high strength ceramic proppants have been employed. Recent field evaluations and economic analysis demonstrate the superiority of sintered bauxite proppant over quartz sand. This paper describes the development, application, field results, and product evolution of sintered bauxite.

Light meter is an ArcelorMittal innovation that uses off-gas light intensity to predict bath carbon, which is akin to the visual cues that the operators employ to finish a blow. Light meter enables the prediction of end point that is independent of any operator’s judgment. The results have been in general consistent with the actual carbon content at BOF end point at Tubarão. Besides some outliers that occurred due to strange intensity curves, the system implemented in Tubarão BOF 3 reported a carbon prediction error statistic that is very similar to dissolved oxygen–carbon end point statistics. Preliminary trials using light meter without any filter improved carbon hit ratio significantly.

"INTRODUCTION Secondary mine ventilation has been hamstrung by the availability of fans that satisfy many competing operational factors. The sometimes legislated requirement of adequate volume to the working face, the minimisation of excavation required to fit the selected secondary fan and the power requirements of various operational phases has, in the past, not been satisfied with just one system. The new system being introduced overcomes all these competing requirements in one simple unit with an added bonus of being very durable without loss of performance when wear occurs on the impeller. Existing Operational Situation Several studies (e.g., CIPEC, 2005; LCG Energy Management Group, 2009) have found that between 42% and 49% of mining energy costs are associated with mine ventilation, depending on the type of mine and the equipment used. If we then look at the general breakdown of installed power of the secondary fan to primary vent fans, the ratio is around 2:1. Thus the total energy costs of the secondary ventilation represents about 25% of the overall mining energy costs. It is of interest to note that the cost of running a typical two stage axial vs the cost of purchasing and general maintenance cost of the same fan over a 10 year period, the breakdown will be conservatively in the order of 40:1.The currently available secondary ventilation axial fan have one duty curve at any given time. Generally this can be changed manually within the motor power parameters but requires a minor outage and removal of the fan to do the pitch adjustments. As the bag vent ducts grow longer, the supplied air reduces to a point where inadequate air is supplied to the working face. This is exacerbated by underground equipment putting additional resistance in the heading and further reducing the supplied air at the working face. This shortfall is normally corrected by the installation of an additional fan in the system to overcome losses in the bag system but comes at a cost of production as the heading needs to be shutdown to install the second fan. This also means that the heading is supplied with excessive air on the shorter runs with a wastage of fan power."

"INTRODUCTION In designing a new pneumatic Dust Sampling Device (DSD) for coal mines, it was essential to analyze the air and particle flow inside the device in detail using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling. Several CFD models were developed to simulate the air and dust flow and sample collecting process of the DSD. These CFD models were developed to assist in the design of the DSD instrument prototypes for laboratory testing. Nozzle and injection parameters such as geometry, air velocity and pressure, were varied across a wide range to obtain the optimal settings to accurately simulate the fluid dynamics of the multi-phase flow within the DSD. Accordingly, these parameters were used as a guide for the design of the DSD and to verify the dust scouring dynamics, which is designed to represent the dust entrainment during an actual methane or coal dust explosion. BACKGROUND The 2010 explosion at the Upper Big Branch mine has demonstrated the destructive violence of a coal dust explosion. A major contributing factor for this disaster was that the mine operators did not have a reliable, direct-reading method to collect mine dust and determine inert content and combustibility. This led to the development of a new prototype handheld, pneumatic mine dust sampling device (DSD), which blows a puff of air and entrains the mine dust by mimicking the entrainment process during a mine explosion. A computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model is used to analyze the air and dust flow inside the DSD. The objective of the CFD modeling effort is to find the optimum design of the DSD prototype, nozzle orientation, air pressure and pulse length by analyzing and varying these parameters so that the scouring action collects a valid, representative and repeatable mine dust sample. CFD MODEL DESIGN Figure 1 shows a wireframe image of the DSD which is utilized in the setup of the CFD model. The DSD has a triangular cross section and is 10 cm wide. Two nozzles with cross-sectional dimension of 2.8 cm by 0.25 cm act as inlets at the narrow end of the triangular cross section. The CFD model includes a reference plane 6 cm away from the nozzle to measure the quantity of dust collected. The geometry shown in Figure 1 was created for the model and it matches with the design of the actual device shown in the figure 2. Symmetry, along the plane X-Y through the center of the device, is used to reduce the number of computational cells in the CFD model. Figure 2 shows the prototype device used for experimental testing. CFD MODEL SETUP Figure 3 shows a hexahedral mesh with a cell size of 0.8 mm and the total number of cells is around 650,000. The ANSYS Fluent® pressure based solver with a transient case was used with a total duration of 40 ms. The 40 ms simulation time is based on experimental measurements to capture the injection of air and initial scouring of dust."

Modern high-performance disc filters such as the BoVac Disc Filter have set new standards in applications where large capacities of solids, liquids and air have to be managed through the filters. These disc filters have an enormous hydraulic capacity. For applications in mineral processing - with a special focus on tailings – which typically have high solids throughputs but low filtrate and air flows, this capacity can be used to expand the filtration area while maintaining the benefits of very good cake discharge even with thin cakes (4-5 mm) and a high filter speed. Research work over the last century has proven that increasing the filter area should be achieved by increasing the disc diameter. Because adding more discs leads to big problems with the cake discharge. However, as the disc diameter increases, the filter segments become longer and heavier. A suitable compromise was therefore found by doing both. The result is the first vacuum disc filter that offers significantly more than 300 m² of filtration area, but has no more than 6 discs.

"Pressure exerted on gold producers by regulators, project financiers, and civil society in the wake of the Baia Mare tailings spill in Romania during 2000 prompted most responsible gold companies to sign up to the International Cyanide Management Code for the Manufacture, Transport, and Use of Cyanide in the Production of Gold (the Code). The Code stipulates a ‘cradle to grave’ approach more comprehensive than that applied to any other mining reagent and poses particular challenges for operators who use cyanide-bearing tailings for backfill. This paper examine some of the challenges for Code compliance facing deep underground gold mines that employ backfill technology, most particularly the requirement to demonstrate that the potential migration of cyanide (and its degradation products) from emplaced backfill will not have an unacceptable impact on worker health and safety or on the receiving environment, either during mine life or after closure.Although the Code only contains a single reference to backfill, more careful consideration confirms that most sections of the Code that deal with tailings management are potentially applicable to mines where tailings material is used for backfill. Certain principles of the Code also pertain to aspects of operations, worker safety, emergency response, training, and dialogue with stakeholders relating to backfilling practice.For gold mines of the Far West Rand, the most significant cyanide-related risks associated with backfill operations relate to worker exposure to cyanide-bearing seepage and HCN gas. There is potential for seepage of cyanide-bearing water from backfill to compromise the beneficial use of surface and groundwater, and thus impact on downstream users and ecosystems. However, the extreme depth of mining and the specific geological and hydrological controls on the Far West Rand suggest that the potential environmental risks associated with backfill are likely to be considerably less significant than the cyanide-related risks to the workforce."

FROM time to time geologists and mining engineers, impressed by the heavy demands made on our mineral reserves' by modern industry, and particularly by the steadily mounting rate of production necessary to meet that demand, have issued warnings as to the danger of exhaustion. There can be no dispute as to the fact that mineral deposits are exhaustible. New mineral, is not created to replace that taken from the earth and when a crop of mineral is once harvested another cannot be grown in the same area. The evidence of exhaustion 'of particular oreshoots, deposits, or even of whole districts is familiar to all who have mined. If one were to judge solely from the abandoned mills and prospect holes he would rightly conclude that mining is but a short-lived industry. If one were, furthermore, to assemble the data as to known reserves of almost any of the commonly used minerals, and divide them by the annual tonnage mined, he would come to the same conclusion. If, again, one were to consider the most carefully made estimates of competent men seeking to measure the earth's reserves of minerals and plot against them a projection of the curve of past consumption, he would be justified in viewing the situation with alarm.

Thin sections of coal have been prepared for many years either by cutting on a microtome (1,2)5 or by grinding and polishing (2,1). Specimens of most coals had to be demineralized in hydrofluoric acid and softened in caustic solutions before they could be successfully cut with a conventional microtome. Some lignites could be cut without pretreatment. Jeffrey (1) obtained sections from coals of all ranks, although long and tedious pretreatment was required for anthracite. His sections were less than 1 cm.2 in area (probably much less for high rank coals) and about 5 microns thick. Thiessen (2) also cut sections of softened coals, mostly of low rank. His sections were a few square millimeters in area and about 3 microns thick. However, Thiessen preferred ground and polished sections for detailed studies because they were larger and had not been chemically attacked by softening media. He prepared ground sections as large as 4 cm.2 in area and usually 5 to 10 microns thick. Thousands of such sections, covering complete column samples of many coal beds, were studied for a number of years (4). With the development of the electron microscope and increased interest in quantitative optical studies of coals, a need for much thinner sections arose. However, no suitable technique for preparing such sections was known until Fernández-Morán developed a diamond knife for cutting ultrathin sections of hard materials (5). Workers at the Centre d'Etudes et Recherches de Charbonnages de France applied this new tool to the cutting of coal sections and have recently described their technique to the Burg, of Mines. Conclusions are based on analysis of literature and on nonmail surveys of foundries, scrap processors, trade and technical associations, and others. The existing tramp-element problem is expected to be persistent, but amenable to improved control by foundries and their suppliers. Four recommendations for action are given.

Talc is used as an essential ingredient in a wide variety of plastics applications ranging from polyester body patch compounds through polypropylene automotive, appliance, and household furniture components to high performance parts made from liquid crystal engineering resins. The paper focuses on polyolefin applications; the three tier market for talc in polypropylene; the effects of various talcs in typical compounds; and trends in each market segment. This study was made to present the mining methods and costs of a uranium mine typical of other mines in the highly productive Westwater Canyon member of the Morrison formation in New Mexico. Four mining methods have been used at the Section 23 mine: the retreat-room-and-pillar method, a sublevel-slicing method (also called top-slicing), the horizontal-cut-and-fill method, and a modification of the ring-drill method. The application of the methods at this mine and at other mines in the area should be of benefit to operators with similar problems. Ore bodies in the Section 23 mine are irregularly shaped and vary in size, in rock strength, in moisture content, and in uranium concentrations; different mining methods are required and mining costs are not constant. A 6-month period of operation at the Section 23 mine was analyzed and mining costs, not including amortization, depreciation, or Federal taxes, averaged about $6.80 per ton.
