The United States Bureau of Mines is establishing a computerized mineral inventory system to help the Federal Government appraise its mineral position and prepare programs insuring against critical shortages of materials. This system, called the Minerals Availability System (MAS), is a component of the Bureau's minerals intelligence function designed to conduct and maintain an inventory of minerals important to the Nation. The MAS defines the physical and commercial availability of the mineral resources. Known resources are evaluated and classified by deposit for entry into a computer storage and retrieval system. An integral concern of these evaluations is the cost of mining and beneficiating the ore contained in specific deposits. To meet this concern, a cost handbook was developed as an aid to preparing feasibility-type estimates for capital and operating costs of mining and primary beneficiation of various types of mineral occurrences. Cost data, obtained from U.S. and Canadian companies, were used as the basis of this handbook. The handbook presents cost curves and equations for each component of the mining and beneficiation process. Factors for each cost component are also given, thereby allowing the updating of cost for time, geographic location, labor rates, and mining and milling conditions. Included in the latter conditions are items such as the length of haul, need for rock bolts, and a rock work index for ores and rocks of various hardnesses. 1.2. USE OF THE HANDBOOK Using the handbook a feasibility-type estimate falling within 25% of expected actual cost is obtainable by summarizing cost components. This handbook should not be used to determine the cost of any single component of a mining or beneficiation system, as any single component may not fall within the 257 limit. It must be understood that anyone who uses the handbook must have a comprehensive knowledge of mining and processing technology and cost estimating procedures. Experimental studies on high carbon steelmaking through LD Converter - Vacuum Arc Degassing - Bottom Pouring route to produce low oxygen steels were carried out. The results indicated that it is possible to produce steel with a total oxygen content of less than 15 ppm. Thermodynamic and mass balance calculations are made on low-carbon steels that are treated by a complex deoxidation practice based on primary deoxidation of aluminum, manganese and silicon additions; followed by secondary deoxidation of vacuum degassing with simultaneous additions of aluminum. The results showed that primary deoxidation is mainly due to aluminum and the effect of carbon under reduced pressures on deoxidation of molten steel that is already killed by aluminum is negligible. The effect of process parameters on total oxygen content of steel, like carbon content, slag composition and inert gas purging, are discussed.

China's coal energy development, characteristics and relationships with atmospheric pollution are reported. Atmospheric pollution sources from coal combustion are analyzed. Some of the projects for clean coal combustion in the Shanghai area include use of industrial briquettes, investigation of coal combustion additives, and blending combustion of coal with industrial wastes. Coal is China's main energy source, and 80 percent of China's annual coal production is used in combustion devices. Coal-flue gases from the domestic stoves and industrial furnaces are the main atmospheric pollution source. China's atmospheric pollution is, in fact, the pollution of coal-flue gases. To 2000, in view of China's energy needs as a developing nation, the atmospheric pollution from coal combustion must receive our utmost attention.

Reliable particle size analysis in minerals processing plants is a critical factor to the economic return of a plant. As recovery of valuable minerals is compromised for particles outside the optimal size range, effective and reliable particle size analysis is more crucial than ever, particularly in the current upswing of the global commodities market. Inefficient particle size analysis can lead to excessive over-grinding, thereby significantly increasing energy consumption and reagent costs, whilst negatively affecting process operation, thickening capacity, water recovery and tailings disposal.Australia’s first installation of a particle size analyser in Iron Ore has been monitored with great interest by the industry. Previously, manual size sampling at Rio Tinto’s Paraburdoo fines processing plant involved off-site sample analysis, with a turnaround measured in days. The Outotec PSI® 500 particle size indicator, commissioned in July 2009, takes approximately three minutes per line at site.The paper will include details on the following:• plant description,• sampling design,• PSI® 500 analyser functionality description, and• key learnings from site.

GAS as a factor in the efficiency of oil production, might be a better title for this paper as it deals in general with the significance of the gas-oil ratio as an index of the efficiency of oil production and briefly discusses oil production methods with reference to the gas-oil ratio in wells, particularly during the early life of a field. In the recent hearings held at Washington before the Federal Oil Conservation Board the fuller utilization of the energy contained in the gas occluded in or associated with the oil underground was stressed by some of the speakers when referring to greater ultimate recovery of oil. One speaker commenting on this point said in part, "There is ample evidence indicative that if the gas associated with the petroleum in our fields were conserved and elevated gas pressure maintained in the oil sands during their productive life, the ultimate production of oil could be greatly increased."

The spatial modelling of geometallurgical domains is an important step in the characterisation of an ore deposit allowing for the quantification of various rock types, their differing rock properties and the overall value of a project. The traditional approach to modelling such features is through the use of deterministic models, where a single estimate of the extents and structure of the ore deposit is mapped out by geologists based on available data and their interpretation of the geological processes. Any uncertainty in the layout of different domains is not accounted for and heterogeneities of chemical and physical properties of the orebody are likely underestimated. Spatial machine learning techniques can be used to derive geometallurgical categories, or classes, from multiscale, multiresolution and high dimensional measured rock properties. Subsequently, geostatistical simulations of these classes can be applied to obtain multiple equiprobable realisations that define the layout of the geometallurgical classes at unknown locations between boreholes, or domains. In-turn these realisations can be used quantify the uncertainties in the location of boundaries between different domains. The development of a workflow for defining geometallurgical domains and later geostatistically simulating them across the Orebody H; a complex stratabound Bedded Iron Ore deposit located in Western Australia’s Pilbara region is demonstrated. This could be used to identify zones of high uncertainty where collection of additional data might help mitigate or minimise risks and in turn improve forecast production performances.

"This paper presents the results of a study of the concentration of flotation froths in tapered chutes. The tests were conducted on lab and full-scale plants, and the results obtained were mathematically processed. The kinetics of monophase recovery from a stationary flotation froth, hydrodynamics of froth flows traveling in a tapered chute were investigated. The effect was studied of the mass fraction of the valuable component in the chute feed, yield of the chute’s overflow, and chute design on the concentration performance. Processing of the collected data revealed the general laws of the process and allowed to develop a technique for modeling concentration of the flotation froths of sulphide copper ore in a tapered chute to predict the performance without testing. It was found that concentration in tapered chutes allows to obtain products that are comparable in quality with froths after one or several cleaner flotation stages.INTRODUCTIONThe present production expansion rates require continuous improvement in the grade of flotation concentrates, while the grade of the mineral feed is constantly deteriorating. This leads to a significant complication of flotation flowcharts. Flowcharts become multi-staged with multiple cleaner flotations, negatively affecting the production costs.In recent years, researchers are paying close attention to the processes occurring in the froth layer in the flotation cells. Improving the concentrate grade is facilitated by secondary concentration of minerals in the froth layer, which consists in fixing the hydrophobic particles released as a result of the coalescence of the bubbles of the upper layer when moving downward at the liquid-gas interface of the froth layer. In this case, the released hydrophilic particles, trapped in the froth layer as a result of mechanical removal, migrate from the froth together with the liquid phase."

Pilot trial of direct modification of molten blast furnace slag and production of high acidity coefficient slag wool fibers were investigated nearby a blast furnace. Molten blast furnace slag discharged from blast furnace and then directly flow into specialized modification furnace and quartz was simultaneously added into the molten slag as modification agent. The modified molten slag was electric heated to 1500–1550 °C and then the melt was produced into slag wool fibers through high-speed centrifugation method. Melt with acidity coefficient of 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 were investigated and fibers with corresponding acidity coefficient were produced. Slag wool fibers with shot content of 5.5, 5.8, 6.2, 6.8% and average diameter of 4.5, 4.9, 5.6, 6.4 lm for four samples were successfully produced, respectively. Total energy consumption and production costs decreased by 50–70% compared to traditional cupola furnace method. This method provides an energy-saving and emission-reduction technology for the direct utilization of molten blast furnace slag.

"The Irkutsk region is a raw material region. There are a lot of big enterprises for extraction and processing of oil, gas, coal, iron, gold and rock salt. Besides of it, refractory clays, limestone, mica, gypsum and talc are mined in the region. The most important type of mineral raw material is a gold. More than 8.5% of the total mining in the Russian Federation is extracted in Irkutsk region. It is about 0.7% of the world production. The environmental problems of mining and processing enterprises are a complex set of issues that requires of the searching of effective methods to be solved. One of the key environmental problems remains the reduction of waste generation and the introduction of environmentally safe waste management. After analysing different methods of environmental impact assessment it is established that the method of Life Cycle Assessment is one of the most effective methods for mining production. This method base? on the material balance of flows of raw materials, products and waste. The method of Life Cycle Assessment allows to identify the effects of environmental pollution under the influence of mining and processing at a quantitative level and to show real quantitative forecasts of the possibility of managing the flows of raw materials and waste.INTRODUCTION The Irkutsk region is a raw material region. The main projects are the construction of a new mill of the Mining and processing plant GOK “Vysochaishy” with a capacity of 2.6 million tonnes of ore per year; the development of the “Uhakhan” gold-field - 23 km from the “Goltsa Vysochaishy” gold-field; the opening in the Bodaibo region the next parts of the gold-deposit ""Pervenets"". "Within the limits of two-phase approach, considering mass transfer with pulp and air streams was shown that each bubble appears to be an elementary carrier, transporting particles from the collection zone into the froth. The kinetics of flotation was described by the exponential equation in which first order flotation speed constant has to be replaced with two-phased coefficient of a mass transfer. Criteria of selectivity of two ore fractions separation, based on determination of optimum time at which maximum difference between extractions and components content in separated fractions were offered. An interrelation between optimum time of pulp residence in a flowing chamber of a flotation machine, time of bubbles mineralization and an optimum airflow has been ascertained. Cumulative criterion of mass transfer efficiency of flotation process has been ascertained to be a form of the spectrum and its position on axis of three-phase coefficient of a mass transfer.INTRODUCTIONRegularities of a mass transfer of three bearing streams: pulp stream, air stream and froth stream underlie theory of mineral complexes flotation (Samygin, Filippov, & Shekhirev, 2003)However, only description of mass transfer in pulp stream by means of kinetic equations that were simple and convenient for practical use, has gained a full distribution (Tykhonov, 2009;Rubinstein&Filippov, 1980; Saleh, 2010).Within the limits of a single-phase approach, the role of gas stream in increase of speed and selectivity of flotation, was associated with an improvement of hydrodynamic mode. An influence of particles and bubbles sizes (Rubinstein&Filippov, 1980; Rubinstein&Samygin, 1998, Samygin et al., 2003; Dai, Fornasiero,& Ralston, 2000), of pulpflow and airflow (Finch& Dobby, 1990) and turbulent energy intensity (Shubert, 1979; Massinaei, 2007) on the flotation process has been studied. It was stated that flotation selectivity is increasing by means of gradual airflow increase from first to final cameras of the impeller flotation machine (Aslan&Boz,2010; Finch, 2011) and by means of using a multizone flotation machine (Samyguin, Filippov, Matinin, Lekhatinov, &Tertyshnikov, 2013)."

This report gives the result of investigations of coals of different rank, coal com¬ponents, chemically and thermally treated and irradiated coals, and sedimented organic matter. In most studies the arbitrary parameters obtained from the usual quantitative profile analyses are not given largely because they lack physical meaning. Instead comp interpretations are offered. X-ray patterns of high-volatile bituminous and lower rank coals are not self¬-sufficient for structural interpretation by the methods of analysis developed to date. The patterns of hydrogenated and dehydrogenated coals indicate that the basic change in the structure of bituminous coals with increase in rank is the conversion of alicyclic structures into aromatic layers. In low-rank anthracites the aromatic layers are about 10 A in size. The increase in rank is the result of coalescence of layers. High-rank anthracites have layer sizes of 25 to 40 A and exhibit the development of three-dimensional (hkl) reflections of graphite, indicating ordering of adjacent layers. In meta-anthracites the layers are > 1000 A and the basic structure is that of defective crystalline graphite. The well-known petrographic components in low-rank coals have different structures; the differences dissappear in low-volatile bituminous and higher rank coals. The patterns of sedimented organic matter, except impsonites, differ from those of coal hydrogen contents are high, and their X-ray patterns are consistent with those of structures. In contrast to normal coals, the patterns of uranium-bearing coals show increased diffuseness with decrease in hydrogen content. The diffuseness is accompanied by increase in the uranium content of the coal. It is very likely that high uranium-bearing coals have predominantly tetrahedral structures.

"IntroductionSINCE ancient times, the precious metals have played an important role in influencing the course of history. Silver and gold happened to occur, although in small amounts, in those countries where the early civilizations developed. Their persistent brightness certainly amazed the primitive people, who also found it easy to shape them into ornaments •and implements. Ever since then their properties have made them seem desirable possessions.Use of precious metals as money was the natural consequence of man's desire for them. The possibility of changing an ornament into a tool or food at any time, and the ease with which such medium of exchange could be carried and hidden, further increased the demand for the two metals.Silver was probably discovered after gold and copper, and was undoubtedly found by prehistoric man as native silver. The oldest silver articles have been discovered in Chaldean tombs and date back to 5000 B.C. The earliest ascertained producers of silver were Asia Minor and the Iberian Peninsula. The Romans worked deposits in Spain, Britain, and France. In the Middle Ages, some silver was extracted from German deposits, and near the end of the Middle Ages systematic workings were carried on at Freiberg, Schneeberg, and Joachimsthal (1).Before the discovery of the New Continent, the Aztecs and Toltecs in Mexico, and the Incas in Peru, had made extensive use of silver. In the 16th century the Mexican deposits became the largest source of the world silver."

This paper examines the computerization steps of United Coal Company of Bristol, Virginia. OVERVIEW Producing close to 7,000,000 tons per year, United Coal Company is one of the most interesting mining companies in the east. Their approach to mining reflects a dedication to modern technologies and extraction methodologies. With varying amounts of production coming from four divisions (a fair amount of production comes from contract operators) and over a billion tons in recoverable reserves, United rests heavily on the planning and engineering efforts of a centralized engineering group. Although each division relies on its own engineering personnel for day-to-day management and operations, long range planning and reserve management is conducted at the corporate engineering level. This group, while extremely competent and efficient, is relatively small (7 people), when compared to the needs of a large mining company.

In recent years, implementation of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning model technology has gained ground in almost every aspect of human activities. The mining industry has not been foreign to these applications, with advantages including the creation of new optimization methods and the elimination of repetitive tasks. Those applications have been implemented in multiple operative areas, from preventive conveyor belt maintenance to energy optimization for minimizing environmental impact. The blasting process aims to use the energy liberated by the detonation of explosives to break the rock mass according to specifications that facilitate the comminution process. To optimize this process, the energy delivered must correspond to the necessary amount to exceed the tensional and compressional resistance of the rock mass. If the energy applied is insufficient, the rock will not reach the desired fragmentation level and the processing plant may incur additional costs. On the other hand, if the energy level required is exceeded, we incur increased blasting costs that correspond to excess explosive used. Optimization of this aspect of the mining process has major impact in the processing chain reflected in lower costs, efficient resources consumption and environmental impact. The Design for Outcome technology (DfO), developed by Orica, is used to characterize the rock mass in detail to classify, borehole by borehole, the rock mass relative hardness to deliver the adequate energy level to achieve optimal fragmentation. This technology uses information collected by drill sensors, producing data typically referred to as Measure While Drilling (MWD) data to classify the rock mass into domains that can later be used to apply optimal blast designs. In DfO, the data flow is fully automated, starting with the data produced by the drilling system and uploaded to the cloud, which is then domained using Machine Learning (ML) techniques, and then published for consumption using a web interface. Automated explosives loading rules are then generated for each rock mass domain, ensuring that for each borehole, the adequate explosive energy is delivered to achieve the desired fragmentation results with unprecedented accuracy. The application of machine learning techniques allows us to optimize the blasting process results by leveraging a deeper understanding of the rock mass. Applying these optimization techniques, we obtain considerable economic benefits, decrease resources consumption, and achieve a more sustainable mining operation. The application of DfO in a Chilean mining operation allowed the characterization of their rock mass into four domains and established specific explosive loading rules for each one. A 60kUSD reduction in explosives cost was achieved during the test period, while maintaining the desired fragmentation results and expected dig rate. These outcomes were the result of a comparison between the blasting costs used applying the technology mentioned above and a “traditional” classification of the rock mass with the corresponding blasting practices.

ALTHOUGH the Andean mountain belt, which contains almost all the metal deposits of the other South American nations, does not enter Brazil, this country is rich in mineral resources, for in area it accounts for half the continent and geologically it contains almost all of the Brazilian Shield. This great mass of ancient rocks has been relatively stable for a long time and forms a great area of plateaus and highlands interrupted only by the syncline which carries the Amazon River across it to the sea. Lowland Brazil - the great flood plains of the Amazon. Tocantins, Paraguay, and Parana Rivers-is of no interest to the miner, and in fact supports but a small proportion of the country's population. The highland area is divided into unequal parts by the Amazon River; the north half is underlain by the north lobe of the Brazilian Shield which extends into Venezuela as far as the Orinoco, and into the Guianas, and is known as the Guiana Highlands. Mineralization appears to have been weak in the Brazilian portion of these hills. In fact most of the ore deposits are to be found in the States of Minas Gerais and Bahia, although the neighboring states of Sao Paulo, Pernambuco, and Piauhy can also boast of some deposits. Goias and Matto Grosso are as yet incompletely prospected but are considered to contain reserves for the future.

An overall study was conducted to evaluate the properties and processes influencing the rate and magnitude of consolidation for oil sands fine tailings produced using different extraction processes. As part of this overall study, consolidation tests using slurry consolidometers were carried out for caustic and non-caustic fine tailings. The influence of a change in bitumen extraction process (caustic versus non-caustic) on consolidation properties, namely compressibility and hydraulic conductivity, was determined, as was the effect of adding a coagulant (calcium sulphate [CaSO4]) to caustic fine tailings. For fine tailings originating from two different oil sands ores (Ore A and Ore B), results were presented in terms of variation in average void ratio with time (settlement), void ratio with effective stress (compressibility), hydraulic conductivity with void ratio and coefficient of compressibility and hydraulic conductivity with sodium adsorption ratio. Findings indicated that chemical characteristics of fine tailings (water chemistry, degree of dispersion) do not have a significant impact on their compressibility behaviour and have only a small influence at high void ratio (low effective stress). The biggest advantage of non-caustic fine tailings and treating caustic fine tailings with coagulant is an increased initial settlement rate and slightly increased hydraulic conductivity at higher void ratios. Thereafter, compressibility and hydraulic conductivity is governed by effective stress.

A high-B.t.u, gas can be synthesized by the catalytic methanation of a mixture of 2.5 to 3 parts of hydrogen to 1 part of carbon monoxide, obtained in the gasification of coal, using a steel catalyst followed by Raney nickel in a hot-gas-recycle system. Conversion of 99 percent of the H2+CO yields a fuel gas with a heating value of 983 to 1130 B.t.u. per cubic foot containing 78 to 96 percent methane, no carbon monoxide, and very small amounts of unsaturated hydrocarbons. With the steel catalyst alone, conversions were 85 to 90 percent, giving a fuel gas of 810 to 868 B.t.u, per cubic foot, or 847 to 975 B.t.u. on a C02-free basis. INTRODUCTION In 1948 the U.S, marketed production of natural gas was 5.15 trillion cubic feet; by 1958 it had reached 11.0 trillion cubic feet, a rate of growth of 8 percent annually. 4 5 Although demand is expected to increase less rapidly, by 1966 it may reach 16 trillion cubic feet, based on an estimated 4.7 percent annual increase.6
