Primary steel manufacturers using electric arc furnaces generate one of the largest hazardous waste streams nationwide. The waste stream, known as electric arc furnace dust, is a listed hazardous waste with the designation K061. Oregon Steel Mills, Inc., (OSM) of Portland, Oregon, has implemented a process known as Glassificationn, which uses KO61 as an ingredient in an onsite recycling process. Because OSM was able to demonstrate that the Glassificationm recycling process beneficially uses all toxic constituents in the electric arc furnace dust and that the recycling process produces marketable products, the process is not subject to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) permit requirements. The marketable products manufactured using Glassificationn include roofing granules, ceramic glazes and colorants, abrasive blasting media and, more recently, synthetic slag fluidizers. The purpose of this paper is to identify the regulatory issues for recycling hazardous waste and demonstrate that OSM glass frit is effective as a slag fluidizer in primary steel manufacturing.

A technique has been proposed for recovering iron from hematite-rich diasporic-type bauxite ore in this study. Direct reduction roasting followed by low intensity wet magnetic separation process was carried out. The parameters including reduction temperature and time, sodium salts, grinding conditions and magnetic field intensity for separation of iron were determined. The optimum process parameters as follows: roasting temperature of 1050 oC, time of 60 min, sodium salts involving sodium sulfate, borax, sodium carbonate with dosages of 10 wt%, 2 wt%, 35 wt% respectively, and magnetic field intensity of 1000 Gs with fineness of pulp reached 92.75% passing -0.074mm. Under the optimal conditions, an iron concentrate containing 88.17% total iron grade and iron recovery of 92.51% was obtained, 4.55% total iron grade in tailings. This novel technique provide a potential route for utilizing hematiterich diasporic bauxite ore, recovering iron resource firstly, and extracting alumina from magnetic separation tailings further.

"The techniques able to incorporate wastes by means of a heat treatment present the advantage to fix the residue with chemical bonds. Among these techniques there are vitrification and sintering which are characterised by different operating temperatures in the range of 950-1500°C and the involved raw materials develop silicatic crystalline phases and glassy matrices capable to immobilize heavy metal contents in the waste matrix. In this work incinerator bottom ash, polishing and glazing ceramic sludges have undergone to thermal treatments in order to valorise the waste as secondary raw material for the obtainment of re-products. The chemical efficiency of the process adopted has been evaluated by comparing the results of release tests applied to the as-received wastes and to the thermally treated materials in order to verify the effectiveness of the different matrices to fix the waste components.IntroductionVitrification is one of the most promising technological options for the treatment of some kinds of waste. The high temperature involved in the process (1200-1500°C) leads to the complete destruction of organic pollutants, such as dioxins, and glassy network formed can incorporate heavy metals. Some vitrification processes naturally occur: glasses produced by volcanic eruptions, such as obsidians (Na2O-K2O-Al2O3-SiO2) and basaltic (CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2) rocks, are basically inert materials even when they contain toxic elements, because these are embedded in an extremely stable glassy matrix. The disadvantage of vitrification is that it is an energy-intensive process involving relatively high costs, therefore its use is better justified if a high-quality product with optimised properties can be fabricated. The most effective way to improve the properties of the vitrified material is the transformation into glass ceramic. This is a fine-grained polycrystalline material (typically from 50% to 98% of the volume may be crystalline) formed when a glass of suitable composition is heat treated and hence undergone to controlled crystallisation (phenomenon named devitrification). The three key variables in the design of a glass-ceramic are: glass composition which controls glass viscosity related to the effectiveness of nucleation and rapidity of crystallisation; glass-ceramic phase assemblage (that is, the types of crystals and the proportion of crystals to glass) which is responsible for many of the physical and chemical properties; nature of the crystalline microstructure (crystal size and morphology and the textural relationship among the crystals and glass) which is the key to many mechanical and optical properties. 25th Julius Wernher memorial lecture given at Tunnelling '91, sixth international tunnelling symposium held in London, 14-18 April 1991. The title gives the lecturer a chance to share some of the lessons he has learnt in a lifetime of tunnelling and particularly in the last six years of his involvement with the Channel Tunnel and the International Tunnelling Association. These included: the difficulties of split contracts but the problems arising with Eurotunnel over the need to create a single owner to whom the banks could lend; the peripatetic nature of tunnellers who built London's underground in the 1960s and returned to build the Channel Tunnel from Egypt, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia; the increasing requirement for strategic planning resulting in tunnels between European countries and the need for engineers to deal with decision-makers; EU work on harmonising regulations so that there need no longer be, for example, arguments over which regulations should be followed for temporary electrical equipment in the section of the UK tunnel that is technically in France; the huge improvements in safety standards and attitudes; the enormous increase in the scale of undertakings and individual contracts, with an accompanying change in attitudes to logistics; technological advances to cater for the high performance now required of equipment; and the rising importance of environmental issues. The area around Osisko lake, the Horne mine, and the town of Rouyn, in northwestern Quebec, presents a most interesting structural problem. The present discussion is confined to an area around Osisko lake, about six miles long and three miles wide, shown in Figure 1. The writers are particularly indebted to Mr. Thayer Lindsley, of Ventures Limited, who sponsored the investigation and gave permission to publish this paper. Mr. H. L. Roscoe and Mr. Oliver Hall, of Noranda Mines, Limited, gave every possible assistance; and the Noranda geologists, Mr. H. M. Butterfield, Dr. Peter Priee, and Dr. G. G. "IntroductionA STRIKING FEATURE of the past twenty years has been the application of organized scientific and industrial research to problems of national defence and security and to the development of our natural resources. It has been shown that effective research improves public health, increases the productivity of land, makes mineral wealth available, and increases the efficiency and productive capacity of industry. Alberta is a region bounteously provided with a variety of natural resources, and the Province has entered into a period of unprecedented industrial development. There is, surely, a great opportunity to bring scientific research to bear •on problems associated with the development of these natural resources.I propose to spend a little time discussing the term 'research', indicating something of the various types of research and those fields which appear to •be the particular responsibility of government bodies. It seems logical, also, to outline the course of development .of industrial and scientific research in the English-speaking world during the past twenty-odd years.Research is investigation, examination, or enquiry, and involves the application of human thought, and actions, to the unfolding of new knowledge. That knowledge may assume a variety of forms. Fundamental knowledge may be new facts related to some form of matter, to motion, space, thought, and so on. Those engaged in applying the natural sciences have no monopoly on research as this term is equally valid for those engaged in obtaining, sorting, relating, and interpreting the facts of history, literature."

Ridgeway Deeps is a block cave (BC) located down dip of the operating Ridgeway sublevel cave (SLC) mine. The BC is located approximately 210 m vertically below the lowest SLC level and approximately 1100 m below surface. Due to the mine layout containing a number of common pieces of key infrastructure the activities of both were interlinked.When investigating project construction options for the BC, a number of potential risks were identified including a conflict of priorities between operational and project deliverables and the varying safety and work methods between an owner mining approach in the SLC and a potential contractor workforce in the BC. This led to a review of the construction philosophy and the opportunity to utilise the existing SLC workforce as the basis of all activities in the mine. It was identified that a number of synergies existed with the current SLC operators and mine supervision including common work practices and the opportunity to build on the unique SLC skills of the operators and supervisors which could then be used at other Newcrest caving mines.With the commitment to this philosophy of building on the existing SLC crews and supervision the number of employees reporting through the superintendent underground operations grew from 95 to 245. This increase led to a restructuring of the reporting and work requirements of the superintendent, foremen and shift bosses. In order for the foreman and shift bosses to focus on running the larger crew numbers for the full 12 hour shift the mine superintendent became a pseudo human resources manager taking over all non-mine focused activities including overtime allocation and work and behavioural performance management. In simple terms, ensuring there were competent bums on seats when and where required. As the additional workers were recruited to top up the existing employee numbers, their employment history was used to place them in the most suitable roles. For example, those with building industry experience were placed on the civil construction crews and those with a farming background were used as truck drivers, nippers or on the service crews. To cope with the increased number of new starters a number of key personnel were seconded from the crews into the training group to act as on shift trainers. This initially caused a reduction in mine performance as the main operators were reassigned but it proved a valid move as the time for new operators to reach acceptable levels was significantly reduced with safe operating standards being maintained. This paper discusses how the Ridgeway Deeps Project was delivered on time and under budget whilst at the same time retaining its position globally as an operation to be benchmarked against.

IN COMMON with every other good citizen I long for conditions that will make perpetual peace a reality throughout the world. I have studied the statements of our public men relating to what we must do to bring this about after this war is over. In most of these I find one common error. They always build their plans on the unstated, subconsciously accepted premise that there can be such a thing as an ideal nation whose citizens are possessed of infinite wisdom and actuated only by motives that are above reproach. This heavenly vision fails to correspond with the facts. We wish it could be true but we are forced sadly to admit that the human beings that will live here after this war is over are going to be much like the fallible race that has occupied our planet for the past centuries.

"The O'Brien mine is in the west-central part of Cadillac township along the Cadillac 'break', which extends for 7,500 feet from west to east across the property.The ground was staked in 1924 by A. Dumont and W. Hermeston, prospecting for M. J. O'Brien, Limited. The first vein discovered is that now known as No. 1. The No. 4 vein was later exposed on the surface; the other veins known to be present were revealed by underground work and diamond drilling carried out both from the surface and underground.The mine is developed from three vertical shafts: No .. 2 extending from the surface to 2,000 feet; No. 3 from the surface to 1,500 feet; and No. 4 from 2,000 to 3,000 feet. There is on the property a mill of about 200 tons a day capacity, the usual shops, and a townsite housing about forty-five families. Gold production to the end of September, 1944, amounted to 295,824 fine oz. from ore having an average grade of 0.505 oz. a ton. In addition, the mill recovered 3,237 tons of arsenic trioxide having a purity of 83 per cent As2O3.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe four main groups of rocks of the Cadillac area- the Cadillac, Blake River, Kewagama or Pontiac, and Malartic- are found within the boundaries of the property. However, as these rocks have been fully described in · various government reports (1,2,3,4,5,6) and all the known orebodies occur within one group- the Blake River-a detailed description of the geology will be dispensed with here. The known ore deposits lie south of the Cadillac 'break' in a group of rocks that includes 'greenstones', greywackes, conglomerate, porphyries, and a rock of gabbroic composition that may be intrusive. Both flows and tuffs can be recognized in the 'greenstones'. The two bands of porphyry that trend easterly across most of the property have been considered by some observers to be dyke rocks and by others to be flows. Certain evidence points to their being dykes that were intruded as sills considerably prior to the emplacement of the gold-bearing veins, but the possibility of flow origin cannot be fully rejected. North of the talc-chlorite-carbonate schist zone forming the 'break' the rocks are conglomerate and greywacke with iron formation, in which there are no known veins of ore grade. Within the schist zone are minor acid and basic intrusives. The general trend of both bedding and schistosity is a few degrees south of east. The dip is generally vertica1 or steep to the south."

One year ago this month, we in Central Florida witnessed the beginning of a most exciting and glamorous attraction. After three years of construction and anticipation, Walt Disney World opened its gates near Orlando and during its first year of operation received a flood of over 10 million visitors---half of all who came to Florida last year! The side effects of this newest addition to Florida have been phenomenal. Traffic on heavy days has been backed up for 30 miles from the amusement park along a major interstate highway. Hotels and motels have been jammed packed for months, and reservations are still difficult to make. Gasoline stations, restaurants and souvenir shops are doing a booming business. Everywhere you look as you ride the highways of Central Florida you see the signs of growth. New hotels spring up almost overnight. Golf courses galore. New housing projects and apartments sprawl where orange groves used to be. New roads criss-cross areas which were once deserted. There seems to be no end to the steady influx of tourists and new residents to the Sunshine State. And it's mainly because that we are the Sunshine State that they come. Air and water pollution is and has been at a minimum in Florida. Pollution and emissions are fighting words among some groups dedicated to preserving the bountiful environment we share in Florida. Little wonder then that some of these people display concern when they learn that just 50 miles from the entrance to the Magic Kingdom of Disney, phosphate draglines strip away thousands of acres of land each year to extract one of our nation's most precious

Synthetic spinel is proving to be a highly effective refractory for specific applications, but its cost limits applications. Formation of spinel from a raw material such as diaspore or bauxite could provide a suitable and less costly starting material. In the study reported here, finely ground (-325 mesh) diaspore from Missouri and bauxite from Guyana and China are combined with hardburned MgO (-325 mesh) in appropriate proportions to yield spinel and spinel with secondary phases. A classical sintering and creep study was completed, accompanied by a microstructure study to determine completeness of the reactions and morphologies of the reaction products.

"1. THE VICTORIA STATION TRANSPORT HUB Victoria Underground station is part of the Victoria transport hub, which comprises one of London’s main train termini and a major bus station. At the Underground station, the District Line running in the older shallow brick tunnels dating back to 1868 cross the Victoria Line running in the lower tunnels, which were opened in 1969. After Waterloo, Oxford Circus and King’s Cross/St. Pancras Tube stations, Victoria is the most frequented station on the London Underground network and is used by over 80 million passengers per year. Capacity at Victoria Tube station has been inadequate for many years with passenger numbers steadily rising. Overcrowding is a constant challenge and the station has to be closed regularly during morning and evening peaks until sufficient trains pass through to clear the platforms. For this reason an extension has been debated since the 1990s. After intensive preliminary investigations and feasibility studies covering many variants, which included a large-scale jet grouting test to determine the applicability of this technology as a protective measure for the tunnelling works, the project was officially started with the Victoria Station Transport and Works Act Order (Secretary of State, 2009) effective on the 18th of September 2009. Following a competitive tender process a joint venture of Taylor Woodrow and BAM Nuttall were awarded the contract by London Underground, with their design being carried out by Mott MacDonald Ltd. Ensuring the busy station remained open to the public was a key requirement of the Victoria Station Upgrade. Jet grouting works, which were executed from ground surface, were also carried out while the station was fully operational 2. OVERVIEW The Victoria Station Upgrade aims to increase the capacity of the Underground station significantly and one of its major design objectives is to optimise the transfer between the Underground lines. In order to achieve this, the following new structures are currently under construction: •,A new North Ticket Hall •,Extension of the existing South Ticket Hall •,Nine new escalators •,Connecting tunnels between the North and the South Ticket Hall •,8 new lifts providing step free access to all platforms •,An improved connection between the rail/bus terminus and the Underground station As the elevation and geometry of the existing structures cannot be changed, the new structures need to be adapted to the existing structures (see Figure 1)."

The linear intercept distributions provide unambiguous and accurate characterizations of the texture of mineralogical materials. The relation between the measured linear intercept distributions and the spatial correlation function is shown to be given by: in the Laplace Transform domain. The linear intercept distributions of the two phases in a low- grade chromite-serpentinite ore were measured. and the spatial correlation functions for both phases were evaluated using the above relation. The correlation functions are the primary relations for integral geometric models of mineralogical texture and this work demonstrates the relation between the 10 stereological model and the 3D integral geometry model for mineral liberation.

A method has been developed for determining the relative water wet-tability (fraction of the surface wet by water) of porous media. This method involves the adsorption of methylene blue dye from an aqueous solution onto the solid surfaces of rock contacted by the injected dye solution. Experiments on Berea snndstone cores have shown that water-wet cores adsorb a large amount of dye from solution. In oil-wet cores, however, the injected aqueous dye solution is prevented from contacting the adsorptive surfuces by a film of oil and virtually no dye is adsorbed. This method was tested by experiments on mixtures of water-wet and oil-wet sand. Using the dye adsorption method, it was possible to determine quantitatively the fraction of water-wet and oil-wet sarzd in such mixtures. The dye adsorption test is readily applied to determinitrg the relative water wettability of fresh oilfield cores. The cores are not extracted before testing. Observed values of the wettability of field cores tested to date have varied from 100 to 6 per cent water wet. INTR OD UCTIO N Recent articles1 ' have emphasized the important role that wettability plays in almost all phases of reservoir rock behavior. It has been shown that wettability has a profound effect on the interstitial water saturation, residual oil saturation, capillary pressure, relative permeability, waterflood behavior, and resistivity index of oilfield cores. A quantitative investiga- tion of the effect of wettability on these core properties is severely handicapped by the lack of a simple technique for measuring the wettability of a porous medium. If such a technique were available, it would provide investigators with a means of gaining insight into the distribution of phases within a core. A number of qualitative methods of estimating wettability are known. These include contact angle measurements, flotation tests and studies of displacement pressure: imbibition7 and relative permeability data.' Using these tests, it is usually possible to classify a core as water-wet, oil-wet, or some intermediate degree of wettability. One recently proposed method involving measurement of nuclear magnetic relaxatione offers promise of determining quantitatively the fractional wettability of cores. The equipment is rather elaborate and necessary treatment of the cores before testing probably alters the natural wettability. This latter point also applies to most of the cited qualitative methods. This paper presents a new technique for determining water wettability of cores; it is based on measurements of the dye adsorption capacity of the core. This method has the advantage of requiring relatively simple equipment and involves minimum handling of the core before testing. It is important to distinguish between the various concepts of wettability referred to in the literature. The term "wetting" is defined by Bartell as that phenomenon which occurs when a solid and liquid phase come in contact in any manner so as to form a solid-liquid interface. A preferentially water-wet solid is defined by Jennings in terms of the advancing contact angle in the solid water-oil systems. Brown and Fatt regard fractional wettability as the fraction of the total surface area that is preferentially oil-wet or water-wet. However, none of these definitions adequately describes the type wettability measured by the dye test. This calls for the introduction of a new term, "relative water wettability", which we define as the fraction of the total surface area of a core contacted by injected water. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The ability of a porous medium (especially the clays) to adsorb large quantities of surfactants, dyes, etc., is well known. It is reasonable to assume that a substance can be adsorbed from solution onto a solid surface only if the solution contacts the surface. In this connection Shapiro" has shown by experiments on silica gel that completely dry gel will adsorb methyl red dye from a benzene solution. On the other hand, if a film of water more than several molecules thick is present on the silica gel, the adsorption capacity of the gel for the dye is drastically reduced. Thus, a study of the dye adsorption capacity of cores should give some clue as to the fluid distribution on the surface of the core. TEST OF METHOD As a qualitative check on this theory, dye adsorption tests were run on similar Berea sandstone cores (Table 1, Cores 1-5). Cores saturated initially with water and flooded with 0.01 per cent aqueous methylene blue adsorbed 0.58 mg dye/gm of core. Similar cores saturated initially with water, driven to irreducible water with oil, and then flooded with the same dye solution also adsorbed 0.58 mg dye/gm of core. Another core, treated with a 5 per cent Dri-Film solution, dried and saturated with oil (Soltrol) adsorbed no dye when the dye solution was injected. These tests confirm

"It is well known that frothers affect the amount of water that is transferred to the froth, which has an effect on both the froth stability and the water recovery. On the other hand, since non-selective recovery by entrainment is directly related to water recovery, it can be said that frothers have an indirect effect on flotation selectivity. Recent research on this subject has shown that the non-selective recovery by entrainment, which is characterized by the entrainment factor, is frother dependent. In other words, the entrainment factor is not unique, but depends on frother type.Having different entrainment factors implies that for the same water recovery, the amount of undesired particles reporting to the concentrate may vary if one changes the frother type, which suggests, as a possible explanation, that it is not only the amount of water in the froth what is affected by frother type, but also the froth structure.The purpose of the current work is to study the effect of frother type on foam structure (two phase froth). A quasi-2D cell operated with a slot sparger was used to study the foam structure in the presence of three different frothers: Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol (MIBC), OrePrep®549, and Octanol at the same gas flow rate and reagent dosage. The foam structure was studied using image analysis, and an algorithm based on textural analysis was developed to classify the foams. The results show that it is possible to classify foams according to the frother used, which proves that frothers have an effect on the foam structure.INTRODUCTIONFrothers are usually dosed paying attention to froth stability, condition that is commonly estimated by sight, according to the operator's criteria and experience. This happens because there is not an established procedure or technique for frother characterization, generating qualitative descriptions such as “powerful” or “selective” frothers, which lack of scientific thoroughness and remain under subjective factors. Nevertheless, several works have been done in this line of research. Moyo et al. (2007) classified frothers based on their water-carrying capacity, proving that this characteristic is related with gas holdup and frother type. Previously, Trahar (1981) had related water recovery and gangue particles recovery, defining the entrainment value (ENT). Nowadays it is known that entrainment affects both hydrophilic and hydrophobic because it is not a selective process. In the last decade some studies (for example the one of Konopacka and Drzymala (2010)) delved into different entrainment behaviours dependent mainly on the flotation type (batch or continuous, agitated or columnar, etc.), but there were no studies on the effect of frother type regarding entrainment, since Rahal et al. (2001) argued that the ENT factor was independent of the frother type and concentration, and froth height."

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of froth fl otation for the recovery of gold from the gravity tailing stream of the former Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) operation in Ballarat. The P80 of the tailings was determined by screen analysis as 1 mm, with test work conducted on as received material along with samples ground to P80 sizes of 47, 78 and 134 microns. Laboratory scale batch flotation tests were conducted at both natural and elevated pH to investigate the impact of pyrite depression on gold recovery. Results indicated that although an increase in grade from approximately 0.7 g/t to 3 g/t was achievable at a natural pH and a P80 of 134 micron, gold recovery was low at just 35 per cent. Finer grind sizes were found to have an adverse effect on both grade and recovery. Future efforts will be focused on the sub 310 micron size fraction of the tailings, which was revealed to contain approximately 85 per cent of the available gold and may be amenable to cyanidation or ultra-fine gravity treatment.

Beneficiation and dephosphorization of refractory oolitic hematite ore are investigated in this paper. It is shown that single magnetic separation, gravity separation or flotation is unable to recover iron effectively from the ore due to the complex mineralogy. The joint separation by spiral chute-shaking table shows a prospect for the treatment of the ore. An iron concentrate with 58.67% iron grade and 51.93% recovery is obtained by the joint separation of spiral chute and shaking table under the fineness of ?0.074mm 90% and dispersant dosage of 2kg/t for a sample ore of 37.51% Fe and 0.88% P. However, P content in the concentrate is still up to 0.52%. Dephosphorization from the concentrate is hence carried out. The final iron concentrate assaying 59.26% Fe and 0.056% P is obtained when the concentrate obtained by joint separation is leached by sulfuric acid of 1% (mass fraction) with solid percentage 10% at room temperature for 10min.

When the bionic drill bit is used, a bionic non-smooth surface forms on the crown of bionic drill bit. This surface can be used to extend the life of drill bit and improve drill efficiency. The bionic unit diameter and arrangement were researched in this paper to determine the optimal bionic non-smooth surface for further improving the life and efficiency of drill bit. Four bionic samples having the same structure size, materials and arrangement were designed and manufactured. After being sintered, the abrasion ratios of the four bionic samples were tested, and the results show that the abrasion ratio of Nos. 3 and 2 were similar (only 2% difference) and higher than that of No. 1 and 4. Therefore, the optimal diameter of bionic unit is 1.5 and 2.0 mm. Small diameter bionic drill bits were designed and manufactured, and tested in the laboratory. The results show that not all bionic structure bodies are better than normal diamond bits, except the bionic unit arranged in a reasonable range. When the angle was 24° and 30°, the arrangement of bionic unit were more reasonable, which shows the superiority of the bionic coupling bit.
