"Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The relatively low grade and refractory nature of the deposit has been a challenge for efficient processing since the start of mining on the property. Early processing techniques included gravity separation and barrel chlorination. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. After being closed and reclaimed for over 20 years, the property is poised to re-open and produce once again. In this chapter of the Mine’s legacy, flotation and ultra-fine grinding will be employed to achieve economic extraction of gold and silver from the pyrite. This paper briefly reviews some of the mine’s history, the metallurgical testing, the flowsheet and discusses design considerations.INTRODUCTIONHaile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that has delineated over 62 tonnes (+2M ozs.) of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2 ppm (0.06 opt). This paper provides a brief history of the property, a summary of metallurgical testing, description of the process flowsheet and discusses design considerations.HISTORY1827 – 1837Gold was discovered in creek beds on the Haile property in 1827. The property was owned by Benjamin Haile, and the first few years of production came from placer mining. After gold was discovered in schist beds to the sides of the streams, Haile expanded the operation by leasing 18 meter-square (50 ft.) plots to local planters. These planters used slaves to work the small excavations in the agricultural offseason. The gold ore was taken to arrastras where the free gold was liberated and recovered. The excavations were above the water table, generally less than 18 meters (60 ft.) down, and it was noted then that gold could be found embedded in sulfides and difficult to extract."

"The StackCell was developed to overcome the engineering and design challenges that are commonly associated with existing flotation technology such as pneumatic, self-aspirating cells, mechanical cells, and flotation columns. These challenges include high energy consumption, large floorspace requirements, and size. They are most evident when designing systems to process streams containing a high volumetric flow rate coupled with a significant float yield. Unlike many metalliferous and industrial mineral applications, fine coal flotation circuits are typically characterized by feed streams containing a low solids content (<5%, by weight) where up to 85% of the feed can report to the product launder. With input from major engineering houses and end-users, the Eriez Flotation Division (EFD) developed the StackCell technology with the goal of providing an additional flotation option for end-users. This technology was designed specifically to overcome these challenges by providing an efficient method of separation in terms of metallurgy, but also with respect to equipment size, energy consumption, and installed costs. Besides being placed in tandem with existing cells to provide cost-effective supplemental capacity, this technology can be installed in a stand-alone arrangement as recently demonstrated at Patriot Coal’s Kanawha Eagle preparation plant. This manuscript provides an understanding of the underlying fundamentals of this new technology and presents data from Kanawha Eagle in addition to other industrialscale installations.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, column flotation has continued to gain acceptance as an alternative method for recovering fine coal due to superior metallurgical performance as compared to mechanical flotation cells. This point has been proven on numerous occasions by comparison of plant flotation data with the release analysis separation curve (Dell et al., 1972). Data from a release analysis test approximates the ultimate flotation response of a coal sample. In North America, a number of investigations have been published that document bottom-line improvements achieved using column cells (Luttrell et al., 1999; Kohmuench et al., 2004; Baumgarth et al., 2005). According to these reports, the benefits are derived from an overall increase in plant yield that can be achieved due to the improved product grade in the flotation circuit. In particular, the application of wash water to a deep froth utilized in column flotation minimizes the nonselective recovery of high-ash ultrafines that are hydraulically entrained in the froth by conventional flotation machines."

The apparatus was of a modified Sieverts type1&apos;2 with a reaction tube designed to function also as the cell component of an oxygen pressure gage. The reaction tube assembly is shown in Fig. 1 and described in Table I. The main body is a 1-in.-OD 15 mol pct calcia-stabilized zirconia tube. The ground-glass joint, g, the male part of which carried a prism for optical pyrometer use, was connected to the remainder of the Sieverts apparatus. The calibration of the cell (at its 1000°K operating temperature) for internal oxygen pressures (PO2in) in the range 0.2 to 10 9 atm was made against internal air pressures measured by mercury manometer and McLeod gage. At very low po2in values down to l<Tn atm the performance was checked by comparing pQ calculated from electromotive force measurement when the apparatus was filled with a) pure CO gas and b) a CO-CO2 mixture of the ratio CO-CO2 = 1:0.398, with Po, values calculated from the equilibrium constants of the following reactions at 1000°K:

"With the increasing demand for minerals, technologies to maximize mineral recovery are paramount to a mine’s economic success. Many mining process waters have the potential to form calcium-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, the solution to inhibit these deposits is the implementation of a chemical antiscalant program. This paper examines the application of a fouling analyzer to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scale in mining process streams. The fouling data can be used to compare antiscalant programs and to optimize antiscalant feedrates. Case studies validate the ability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery processes.INTRODUCTION The mining industry uses significant quantities of water. From quarrying, to crushing, to flotation, leaching, and refining, water is often the integral motive force to move slurries, separate or agglomerate fines, and extract and purify minerals. As well, water is used in a number of ancillary applications at mines, including dust suppression, gas scrubbing, and utility processes such as boiler, cooling, and waste water operations. For many processes, the quality of water being used is inconsequential. However, for certain processes, such as flotation, leaching, and desorption / stripping, water quality plays a key role in the ability of the operation to economically recover the target minerals. Dissolved solids such as calcium and magnesium salts can concentrate in process waters, exceed their solubility limits, and precipitate as scale on metal surfaces such as feed and transfer pumps, piping, and equipment. Some of the more common scales that form in mining operations include calcium carbonate (CaCO3, or calcite) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4, or gypsum), and to a lesser extent, calcium and magnesium silicate compounds. Any scale that deposits in a process stream will negatively impact mineral recovery, and increase the operational costs of the mine site. Whether it is acid washing a scaled heat exchanger in a carbon strip at a gold operation, replacing plugged emitter tubes in a leaching operation, or hydroblasting process lines in a scrubber unit, there are costs associated with labor, cleaning chemicals, repairs, and replacement parts. These costs pale in comparison to the potential costs of downtime and lost production, should the scale deposits occur in a process that is critical to the recovery of the target mineral."

During 1979 the writer had the privilege of interviewing about 50 people with varying degrees of involvement in the industrial arena and all of them in one way and another, had a part to play in the huge and intricate saga of Australian employee relations. They fell into the following&apos; categories Industrial Relations Officers/Managers Academics Politicians Union Officials Representatives of Employer Associations Senior Industrialists Commission Members (State and Federal) Sundry (Journalists, Government Officials). This paper seeks to give an account of their views on various aspects of industrial relations. The interviews conducted were all on a personal and confidential basis so it can be expected that sources will not be identified. Suffice it to say that this account represents, albeit in "potted" form, the opinions of some of the most experienced individuals in the country. It will be seen that in most of the vital areas there is a remarkable lack of consensus. It should be noted that this lack of consensus existed within each of the groups mentioned.

Design acceleration response spectra (ARS) are directly correlated with dynamic forces and estimated dynamic bridge displacements, which make them a critical aspect of dynamic bridge design. Nonlinear site response analyses are performed for a 1,400-linear-foot bridge site with a SC soil profile at the sides and a SF soil profile in the middle to evaluate the soil profile effects on the bridge analyses. One-dimensional seismic response analysis is commonly performed for site-specific response analysis. SHAKE or similar one-dimensional total-stress equivalent-linear approaches have been used since the 1970s. However, the equivalent linear method has deficiencies when the subsurface soils are susceptible to strain softening. Therefore, various assumptions are made when using the equivalent linear method by practitioners to estimate the SF soil profile site response. With recent advancements in constitutive models, effective stress models have become more popular. Although the effective stress models are generally more complicated and require additional input parameters, they shed further light on the liquefaction mechanism and its effect on the surface ARS. An equivalent-linear one-dimensional seismic response analysis and a non-linear effective-stress seismic response analysis, using DEEPSOIL, were performed to evaluate the ground surface ARS for a proposed bridge site in Orange County. The soil shear strengths were estimated based on cone penetration test results using empirical relationships. The shear modulus degradations (backbone curves) of soil layers were adjusted to match the estimated soil strength at failure. The ARS curves developed from each method were compared to determine the most suitable method for estimating a site-specific design ARS curve for a liquefiable site. Considering that the bridge abutments and the outer bents are founded in bedrock, while the middle bents are founded in liquefiable soils, ARS curves were created for each subsurface condition. Taking into account limitations of the structural analysis software, recommendations were made to combine the multiple ARS curves into a single ARS curve for the structural bridge design.

Addition of Kastone® peroxygen compound and formaldehyde to cyanide gold extraction process effluents, containing at least 5 mg soluble copper per liter, will oxidize acid-dissociable cyanide to levels less than 0.2 mg per liter, without appreciable oxidation of thiocyanate. Most of the copper precipitates and is removed by filtration of the treated solutions. The treatment can be completed in less than 2 hours when the excess of hydrogen peroxide over the cyanide is about 75-100 mg per liter. The excess hydrogen peroxide destroys residual formaldehyde and then is catalytically decomposed by the copper-containing solids that separate, so it will not interfere with subsequent operation. A pilot plant using this technology has been operated for more than four months at rates from 1-2 gpm. Clear, filtered effluent containing less than 0.2 mg acid-dissociable cyanide per liter has been produced.

Although roof falls account for approximately half of the fatalities in underground coal mining, the factors that produce them are not clear. Mining methods can account for some, but in others the controlling factors are the geological setting in which the mining takes place. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the kinds of rocks that were most likely to produce roof problems. Such knowledge would be helpful to mine planning since rock samples can be obtained in advance of mining by core hole drilling. The investigation was undertaken in underground mines in the Pocahontas #3 seam in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. The Pocahontas #3 is one of the most widespread in this region and is a major source of high quality metallurgical coal. There are at least ten very large mines in the area and many smaller ones. The region has a very long mining history and considerable experience has been gained in roof control problems. The study was conducted with the support of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

Nanosized tungsten powder was synthesized by the hydrogen reduction of ammonium paratungstate (APT) in thermal plasma. The effects of operating conditions on the product composition and particle size were investigated. The particle size of synthesized W powder was less than 30 nm in all cases tested. The sintering behavior of the synthesized powder (25 nm average size) was then investigated and compared with those of commercial W powder of 500 nm average size and W powder of 23 nm average size produced by milling the commercial powder. The sintering was done at 1400oC with various holding times. The hardness of the resulting compact from the synthesized W powder (315 VHN) was similar to that from the milled W powder (309 VHN), but the plasma-synthesized powder had a much lower tendency to form cracks. The compacts of both nanopowders were significantly harder than that of the commercial powder (192 VHN).

The objective of the research in this project is to develop a knowledge based expert system for aiding the planning of mine ventilation systems. This system focuses on mine ventilation system design from a coal mine dust control standpoint. It is recognized that mine ventilation system design is an engineering problem involving not only rote numerical calculations to solve the pressure quantity problem but also substantial judgement and expertise to analyze a problem situation and Interpret the results of an algorithmic program. The thrust of this project is to i) extract this knowledge from public domain sources and recognized experts in industry, government and academia, 11) represent this knowledge in the form of IF ... TI-IEN rules in an expert system (ES) and 111) interface the developed expert system with a mine ventilation network analysis program vis. PSUMVS (Pensylvania State University Mine Ventilation Simulator). By providing the numerical computing and qualitative reasoning aspects of mine ventilation system design in a single Integrated system, better quality decision support will be made available to apprentice users.

I. INTRODUCTION. WHEN so much has been written upon a subject on which so little definite information is available as upon this, some reason must needs be assigned for adding to the volume of literature. A sufficient reason is found in the probable great future importance of China as a producer of mineral wealth. The present undeveloped state of mining in the Empire is due to many causes, among which the most important are the relatively simple needs of the population, the lack of transportation-facilities, the inelastic regulations governing the industry, and the superstitious reluctance of the people to make excavations which might disturb the spirits of the earth and air, or of ancestors. Iron is the metal most in demand, yet the needs of the population, until recently, only made necessary a production of approximately 0.5 lb. of iron per capita per year. The present annual production of iron for domestic consumption, in the United States, is nearly 600 lb. per capita. The curious state of development of transportation in this interesting country has been a greater handicap upon the mining industry than upon any other. The point upon which it hinges is the absence of a road-system. Except for a few military roads, now almost impassable, there are no roads in China; that is to say, there is no land which is set aside as a right of way, belonging to the commonwealth. Throughout the agricultural districts, generally speaking, the entire area is in private ownership, and the lines of travel are between fields. The occurrence and deportment of manganese in a number of ferromanganese and Mn-bearing iron ore samples from supergene-upgraded deposits, as well as from magnetite banded iron formation (BIF) and magnetite skarn deposits, was characterised in order to provide a basis for improved understanding of the processing characteristics of different ore types and investigate the potential for development of a robust geometallurgical classification for Mn-oxide ores. An understanding of the Mn mineralogy in mixed Fe-Mn deposits is necessary to inform any attempt to separate the Fe and Mn during beneficiation and to understand and predict the behaviour of lump and fine ore products during processing.A suite of analytical techniques was utilised, including hand sorting of lump ore particles, optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)/inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) chemistry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and gas and solid phase pycnometry, in order to elucidate manganese mineralogy, mineral chemistry and mineral textures. Manganomelane group minerals (eg cryptomelane, hollandite), pyrolusite and lithiophorite were the most common manganese oxides in the samples examined. From the microprobe work, there was evidence of probable substitution of Mn, as well as Al and Si, into the structures of goethite and hematite. Manganomelane minerals were often intimately associated with goethite, in particular, and a clarification of this association and the associated Si and Al impurities is fundamental for improved understanding of beneficiation and sintering behaviour of Mn-oxide ores. Due to the poor or very fine crystallinity of some supergene manganese deposits and of some Mn oxide minerals, in particular the extent of overlapping peaks and their variable mineral chemistry, XRD was a problematic technique to equivocally determine Mn mineralogy.For lower-grade, earthy, poorly microcrystalline ores the mineralogical and textural association between mixed Mn, Fe and Al (¦ Si) phases was also critical. The deportment and potential separation of these elements in these deposits, especially Al, was complex, as they were characterised by forms of æhydrousÆ cryptomelane with higher levels of Fe-Al-Si substitution, as well as intimate intergrowths of ochreous-earthy goethite (probably aluminous in part) with cryptomelane, lithiophorite and/or kaolinite.Trace amounts of alkali elements in ferromanganese deposits were considered likely to be preferentially structurally associated with Mn oxides, while lateritic deposits with significant amounts of lithiophorite could contain elevated levels of deleterious impurities; Co and Ni in particular.A combination of solid and gas phase pycnometry proved to be a useful technique for broadly discriminating hematitic, goethitic and mixed Mn oxide-goethite lump particles based upon differences in their envelope and apparent densities. Based upon these preliminary results and ongoing Raman spectroscopy work on manganese deposits sensu stricto, Raman spectroscopy is a technique considered to have promise during targeted research to better link the optical and compositional properties of ferromanganese ore particles. CT-scan (computed tomography scan) analysis could also be combined with Raman spectroscopy and pycnometry to link mineral composition, mineral texture, ore particle textures and particle porosity/permeability to the high-temperature processing behaviour of lump and fines products.CITATION:Peterson, M J, Hapugoda, S, Manuel, J R, Donskoi, E and Poliakov, A, 2013. This paper describing mining methods at, the Eighty-Five mine of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co., Valedon, N. Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The Eighty-Five mine is in southwestern New Mexico, 3 miles southwest of Lordsburg, Hidalgo County (see fig. 1). The mine produces normally 7,000 to 8,000 tons per. month of silicious copper-gold-silver ore, and employs approximately 200 men underground and 40 on-the surface. Mining is done by shrinkage and cut-and-fill methods.

"INTRODUCTION The pilot-mill concentrator at Boulder City, which has a nominal capacity of 40 tons per day, was planned and built to investigate further the beneficiation of domestic manganese ores that have been concentrated successfully in the ore-dressing laboratory. As milling of manganese ores in general is a new field, it is necessary to prove the success of laboratory processes by means of large-scale operations employing standard milling equipment, and thus to obtain engineering and metallurgical data essential to designing and operation of full-scale concentrating mills.The first ore tested in the pilot plant was the Three Kids Annex manganese ore from the Las Vegas Wash area 15 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nev. The deposit was worked for its high-grade ores during the First World War From 1930 to 1939, 4,500 feet of diamond drilling was completed by a private company. Diamond drilling started by the Bureau of Mines in November 1940 and completed in July 1941 aggregated 6,600 feet. Exploration by the private company and the Bureau outlined reserves of about 1,000,000 tons of ore assaying plus 28 percent manganese. A much larger tonnage of lower-grade ore also was outlined by the drilling.Because of its physical nature, the Three Kids Annex ore had long proved unamenable to concentration by ore-dressing methods. The ore is a mixture of manganese oxides (wad) filling the pores and to some extent replacing a silt composed of very fine grains of volcanic tuff, quartz, feldspars, other silicates, and clay. Some gypsum occurs as fillings along fracture planes. The ore is light and very porous. Upon wetting, it disintegrates into granular but friable particles and a large amount of slime. It is these characteristics that make the ore so difficult to concentrate."

Four bit designs, two conical and two radial, were tested in coal against a 60° conical reference bit to obtain data on orthogonal cutting forces and primary respirable dust generation. One conical and one radial design were modified by the Bureau of Mines for these tests. Results were mixed: One radial bit used substantially lower overall cutting forces and specific energy than the other bits and was the only cutter lower on energy and most forces than the standard 60° bit. How-ever, it generated more specific and total dust than any other bit. The four bits were also tested for incendivity, with a 90° plumb-bob bit as the reference. The frictional ignition tests were designed to simulate both trimming top rock and cutting such rock during advance on-sump. Results of these tests were also mixed. The radial bits were substantially less incendive than the reference bit and caused no ignitions in either top trimming or sump modes. Only the modified mushroom-tipped conical bit caused ignitions. Bits similar to this modified design should not be used on drum-type miners in gassy mine areas; in-stead, the other types of bits tested should be used to reduce ignition potential to a minimum.

Overloaded blastholes and insufficient stemming are major factors in flyrock accidents at surface metal and non-metal mines, Accurate measurement of blasthole depth, stemming height, and water depth would reduce the overload and the probability of blow-out, flyrock, excessive ground vibration, and airblast. Problems result because current measuring systems are inaccurate and often difficult to used A literature survey determined measurement techniques and blasting parameters prior to 1970. Similar data were gathered for current practices in 11 iron mines, 30 copper mines, and 92 quarries. Most operations used a cloth tape to measure borehole depth and stemming height; approximately 10% of the operations had dry blastholes. Alternate measurement techniques were evaluated and discussed. Candidate measuring techniques with best potential for improvement over the present weighted tape method are disposable tapes or string chains, automated readout tapes, modified sludge level indicators and acoustic resonance methods.

Geological Aspects of Ore Reserve Estimates of Pine Point District Zinc- Lead Deposits, N.W.T. Zinc-lead ores of the Pine Point District, Northwest Territories, Canada are hosted in paleokarst cavities within a Middle Devonian carbonate barrier complex. Of the nearly 100 deposits found, most are irregularly distributed along two main regional stratigraphically controlled trends. The ores, which occur predominantly as open space filling, form deposits most of which average one million tonnes in size with an average grade of 10% combined zinc plus lead. Geological features related to karsting control not only distribution of deposits but also their shape, size and grade. The higher grade ore in these deposits generally occurs in a relatively small core area. Consequently, accuracy of reserve estimation is dependent on drill hole density and understanding of karst geometry. Several case examples will be reviewed to demonstrate the relationship between shape, size and grade of deposit, geological reserves and drill hole density, along with a discussion of geological ore reserve estimation methods.

Published experimental coke data from a pilot plant slot-type oven were examined by statistical regression analysis. Quantitative relationships were found to exist between the coking rate, bulk density, and fine grinding of the coal, sole-oven expansion, volatile matter, moisture, ash, and carbon con-tent of the coal and coke parameters indicative of size and strength. Regression equations developed from coke data were shown to yield computed values that were in good agreement with experimental results for 11 coke properties. Prediction equations developed were evaluated with an independent set of data. Present results indicate that the variables cited undergo much interaction and the sum of these interactions determines coke size and strength.
