HERACLITUS, a sage of antiquity, called the dark philosopher, who refused a throne, preferring a hermit's cell, propounded, twenty-four centuries since, the maxim : [ ] War (or strife) engenders all things. This, though probably intended by Heraclitus to apply especially to the internal forces of nature, is often said, with equal reason, of the affairs of men. Controversial strife, whether fortunately or unfortunately, is a crucible through which all new discoveries in science, and all technical applications of science must pass-a test which they must all endure before they can become so vitalized as to germinate, so to speak, take root in the human mind, grow tip, and overspread the earth. The greater the number and the power of the elements arrayed against such a growth, and of the influences hostile thereto, the greater should be the inherent vitality of the germ, the more strenuous, skilful, and persistent its cultivators and upholders. During the decade last past we have had, in spite of the severe stringency of the times, an active growth of this kind in progress, whose prospective importance it would now be difficult to overrate. This is the movement which has for its motive the idea that, generally speaking, fuel should be gaseous in form, and which has for its goal the introduction into general public use of gaseous products, made by cheap and rapid processes and on a gigantic scale, distributed throughout our cities and towns in distribution-systems which shall be proportionately gigantic, and sold at prices which will bring such fuel within the means of the poorest householders. Personally, for ten years past, the writer has never failed, on occasions public or private, to urge his belief that the realization of this idea, deemed by him a certainty of the future, will bring about

The objective s of this paper are: (a ) to examine and discuss the burdens we place on our extractive industry; (b) to compare the levels of taxation in Canada with those in other countries; and ( c) to suggest certain broad parameters within which our taxation policies may be made more rational and stable. Among the burdens identified are taxation, the ownership and use of our resources, environmental issues and the rather emotional issue of so-called 'super profits'. Finally, the paper will address certain broad but key areas of policy which need attention and agreement if our tax system is to be made more rational. Such areas include: whether and if so why the extractive industry should be given incentives;. what circumstances, if any, justify a 'higher' than normal' level of taxation, and, ?if the concept of economic rents is a justifiable one, how might a basis for them be established which recognizes the fluctuating value of much of the industry's output. Note: The paper was written before the 1977 Federal and Provincial budgets were presented. Consequently, the paper does not reflect any changes proposed in these budgets.

"The Eastern Abitibi Sub province (Quebec segment), contains two main types of gold deposits: the common quartz-vein type and the rare pyritic type. Both occur in areas dominated by volcanic rocks and are spatially associated with major fault zones.Quartz-vein gold deposits consist of simple to complex networks of quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins in reverse shear zones and extensional fractures. They occur in areas dominated by mafic volcanic rocks and are commonly associated with small syn- to late-tectonic porphyritic felsic intrusions. Associated alteration, which postdates peak metamorphism, is dominated by carbonatization, sericitization and pyritization of the wallrocks. These deposits formed late in the geologicalevolution of the Abitibi.Pyritic gold deposits range from deformed massive sulphide lenses to zones of syntectonic pyrite-rich veinlets and associated pyrite disseminations. These deposits occur in environments dominated by felsic volcanic rocks that are typically converted to sericite schists near the deposits. The associated pre-metamorphic aluminous alteration is now characterized by metamorphic sericite, andalusite, kyanite and chloritoid, overprinted by a late retrogression of alumino- silicates. These deposits probably represent deformed volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, but the timing of gold introduction in these is not fully understood.The differences in geological attributes reflect significant differences in the genesis these deposits: the pyritic deposits probably have a multistage genesis, including a pre-tectonic stage, in contrast to a single stage late-tectonic genesis for the quartz-vein deposits.RESUMELa partie Est de la Sous-Province de l’Abitibi( segment québécois) renferme deux types de gites d' or: ceux de type ""veine de quartz"" et ceux, plus rares, de type ""pyriteux"". Ces deux types se trouvent dans des secteurs particulièrement riches en roches volcaniques et mantrent une association spatiale avec des zones de failles majeures.Les gites de type ""veine de quartz"" correspondent à des réseaux de complexité variable de veines de quartz-carbonate-pyrite se développant dans des zones de cisaillement inverse et des fractures de tension. La mise en place de ces gites est tardive par rapport à l'évolution géologique de l'Abitibi.Les gites d' or de type pyriteux consistent en des lentilles de sulfures massifs déformes, des zones d' abondantes veinules pyrite uses syntectoniques, et des zones de pyrite disséminée. Ces gites se retrouvent dans des empilements contenant surtout des roches volcaniques felsiques qui sont transformées en schiste à séricine pres des gisements. L’altération a l’umineuse pre-metamorphique associée a ce type de glte a donné naissance, lors du metamorphisme regional, a la sericite, a 'andal ousite, a Ia lcyanite et au chloritoi""de; par la suite, les alumino-silicates ont été affectes par une alteration retrograde tardive. In the east of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, a new high-rise building is planned directly next to the river Main. The high-rise building will have a height of about 75 m and will be founded on a Combined Pile-Raft Foundation (CPRF) in the tertiary marl. The new structure will be constructed next to important, sensitive traffic infrastructure. The foundation of the new high-rise building adjoins directly existing historic quay structures, which are more than 100 years old. For analysis of the stability and the serviceability of the heavily eccentric loaded foundation of the new high-rise building and the existing structures and for the investigation of the soil-structure interaction complex three dimensional, non-linear numerical simulations have been carried out. These numerical simulations take into account all geometric and material specific boundary conditions, including the history of the construction of the whole area. The paper introduces into a very complex construction project in which the investigation of the soil-structure interaction has an important role. The three-dimensional numerical simulations are explained and the results are shown.

"Murrin Murrin Operations has not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues many of which are the result of design decisions have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are:1. the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency;2. the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids;3. the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and4. the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system.In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system through mechanical modification as follows:•, CCD1 has a modified rake mechanism that now allows central vertical lift of 600 mm;•, CCD1 has forced dilution using the Outokumpu Turbodil® technology and replacing the E-Duc® technology of Eimco;The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system are discussed in this paper. The installation was justified on improved operational robustness and an increase in the in the underflow density of 1 per cent (per cent w/w). At approximately the same time process modifications in the solution neutralisation circuit were implemented and these changes altered the rheology of the slurry reporting to CCD1. Since the modifications to CCD1 and the solution neutralisation circuit, the CCD circuit has averaged a 2 per cent improvement in the circuit underflow density.The CCD1 modification was completed on time and mechanically has performed well. From a risk point of view, the central rake-lift and Turbodil®dilution system add a degree of freedom and robustness to CCD1 operation that has extended the range of operational confidence. In this respect, the modification has been a success and is complementary solution neutralisation improvements."

THE purpose of this account is to introduce to other engineers and geologists who use photography a means of interpreting topographic and geologic structure with the stereoscope. Anyone who finds this of sufficient interest to read it at all must cut out the pictures shown and have a good look at them through the stereoscope; there is no other way to appreciate what is meant. Most of us have been disappointed by the flatness of mountain pictures and by the lack of perspective in photographs taken to illustrate topographic and geo- logic features. The use of the stereoscopic principle was suggested by the work of the photographic division of the Air service during the war. Photographs of the battle line, taken from air planes, were mounted for stereoscopic study, with most remarkable development of topography, penetration of camouflage and, by the matching of pictures with a time interval between, sure revelation of new work by the enemy. Thus, two views taken from a plane flying at 10,000 ft., both of the same terrain but from different points, are mounted in proper relation and put into the stereoscope. If the distance between the two positions of the camera was 200 ft., the observer then sees the topographic and military features as though his eyes were 200ft. instead of 235 in. apart.. The result is startling in its revelation of features that are flat and unintelligible when viewed by the unaided eye or in a single photograph. With the papers of Palmer and Smith1 and of Burghoff and Bohlen,2 published in 1942, understanding of the problem of the development of ears on deep-drawn brass cups was brought to the point where, from a practical standpoint, producers of brass sheet could keep earing under control. However, these very practical results raised questions concerning the reasons for the observed behavior. Since plastic deformation is fundamentally a function of crystallographic slip, these reasons must be considered in the light of the textures to be found in the annealed sheet. Various attempts have been made. to interpret the mechanism of ear formation by correlation with the preferred orientation and the anisotropy of the sheet. However, none of these has satisfactorily explained why ears are usually found in the rolling and transverse directions for copper but at 45' to these directions for brass. This paper offers additional data on these two related subjects and has been divided into two sections The first section provides a survey of the recrystallization textures of brass as affected by annealing temperatures and prior reductions, and an account of the caring behavior which accompanies these textures. The second section reports new data on the anisotropy that accompanies a characteristic texture for brass and endeavors with partial success to establish the factors that account for the difference in earing behavior between copper and brass Earing BehavioR oF Brass Review of Textures The recrystallization texture of severely rolled brass was first reported by Bass and Glocker.3 The preferred orientation to which this texture, obtained from metal annealed at 500°C., was most akin was (II3)[I12] This texture has been confirmed by Bauer, von Göler and Sachs;4 Brick;' Brick, Martin and Angier;6 and Cook and Richards7 who, in general, used annealing temperatures under 500°C. Bass and Glocker3 also reported the recrystallization texture at 850°C. to be the same as at 500°C. They analyzed their textures by means of single photograms obtained with white radiation. The photo-grams for both temperatures are reproduced in their paper, and there is a strong similarity between the two. However, for the latter temperature, the number of spots registered on the film was remarkably large for the grain size to be expected, and the authors made no mention of using a technique that would integrate a large enough area of the specimen to produce so many spots. "Shale gas has become an important unconventional oil and gas resources. Its effective development relies on comprehensive and accurate understanding of shale gas reservoirs. Rock mechanical properties is one of the important components of reservoir evaluation. Two adjacent black shale samples, which are cored from the depth of 1145 meters in Chongqing, southwest China, are subjected to acoustic emission(AE) test under uniaxial stress and compared with coarse grained granite. The results of synchronous AE, stress-strain and ultrasonic velocity experiments show that shale has weak anisotropy. Compared with granite sample, two shale samples are similar, but their strength, velocity and brittleness are quite different, indicating that shale has strong microscopic heterogeneity. TOC, XRD, SEM microstructure analysis show that total organic content, mineral composition and natural fractures are the main impacting factors for mechanical heterogeneity. INTRODUCTIONShale gas is a typical low-grade marginal resource, which is characterized by ultra-low matrix permeability and small single well control volume. In order to enable commerical development, complex hydraulic-fracture networks must be created in the shale to allow gas to escape from the micro/nano-pores and natural fractures where it is trapped in the rock (C. Clark et al.,2013; Ge et al., 2013). The development of shale gas requires accurate evaluation methodologies to evaluate shale reservoir properties and predict production. (Jarvie et al., 2007). Rock mechanical properties are an important part of the reservoir evaluation. It is significant for efficient drilling, completion and hydraulic fracturing to understand mechanical behavior of shale gas play (John, 2011; Wei, 2013).Rock mechanical properties mainly include heterogeneity, anisotropy, brittleness and acoustic emission activity (Lockner et al., 1992; Jerome et al., 2009; He et al., 2010; Liang et al., 2012). Shale mechanical properties are evaluated from laboratory tests following a complex workflow that covers tasks from sampling to testing (Md. Aminul Islam et al., 2013). It is common to include various experimental methods such as stress-strain curves, ultrasonic velocity and acoustic emission when evaluating the mechanical properties (Rao et al., 2006). Because of the presence of organic-rich matter, mineral composition orientation and natural fractures, shale tends to have strong anisotropy and heterogeneity (Deng et al., 2004; Wang et al., 2013; Hathon et al., 2013)."

This paper outlines the results of a relationship developed during the design and construction of the foundations for the Gallery Towers project in Melbourne. Both the builder and the piling contractor were determined to arrive at a satisfactory foundation solution to the problems encountered at the site. The scope of piling work was to provide load-bearing piles under the building columns, some of which were located within a retention system that also required a piling solution. Geological conditions were variable and challenging. The site area was small and located adjacent to the National Arts Centre in the developed Southbank area, a high density office area. This presented logistical problems in limiting construction traffic on site and also demanding minimal noise and vibration emanating from piling activities. The piling contractor, Vibro-Pile, and the builder, Walter Construction Group, faced the challenges presented with a refreshing cooperative attitude that was beneficial to both companies. Commercial issues rising from design and construction problems were first put apart in order to allow the respective technical department of each company to work with minimum constraints to achieve the most cost effective solution. In the process usual adversarial attitudes resulting in loss of time and money was avoided. A number of issues were addressed successfully at minimum cost and time during this contract. Despite the difficulties encountered, the job was completed on time and with negligible claims for extras, resulting in the development of a strong mutual respect between both companies.

The investigations of fuels conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey had their inception at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904. By an act approved Febru- ary 18, 1904, Congress authorized the work of analyzing and testing at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition the coals and lignites of the United States, under the supervision of the Director of the United States Geological Survey. An appropriation of $30,000 was made for this purpose. In the general deficiency bill dated April 27, 1904, the sum of $30,000 was added to the appropriation. To carry out these investigations the Director of the Geological Survey appointed a committee consisting of E. W. Parker, statistician of the Geological Survey; Joseph A. Holmes, State geologist of North Carolina; and Marius R. Campbell, a geologist of the Geological Survey. Under the first act authorizing this work all of the machinery and coal for the tests was to be furnished the Government free of charge. The buildings containing the testing apparatus were all paid for out of the first appropriation. After the close of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition every Congress made an appropriation for continuing these fuel tests. These subsequent appropriations permitted the purchase of appliances better adapted for the testing work.

For decades strip mining with discon tinuously operating 'draglines and shovels has been the most economical operation method in the shallow hard coal opencast mines of Aust- ralia, North-America and some other countries. Continuously operating equipment such as bucket chain excavators and bucket wheel excavators in combination with conveyor belt systems, conveyor bridges and stackers had been deve- loped in Germany; during the last 25 years this type of equipment has been further developed in order to allow a high degree of rationaliza= tion as to opencast mines in unconsolidated overburden in Germany, in many European couh- tries, in India and in Victoria. The differing compactness of the layers to be mined, the increasing mining depth, the adverse over- burden to coal ratio and geotechnical con- ditions account for the combined use of con- tinuously and discontinuously operating equip- ment and systems. This paper is to demonstrate some projects showing the combination of continuously and discontinuously operating equipment which aims at optimizing opencast mine operations. AS a portion of a general study of liquid-metal thermodynamics, high-temperature galvanic cells were used to study the effect of added dilute solutes on the activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450° to 650°C. 1,2 The cells were of the type The experimental procedures have been described previously.1 In the course of studies conducted in the bismuth-rich corner of the systems Bi-Zn-Au and Bi-Zn-Cu, marked discontinuities were observed in the electromotive force-temperature relations for a number of the experimental compositions. Above the discontinuity temperatures, the relations, which were linear, exhibited slopes similar to the binary alloy of the same mole fraction zinc, as shown in Figs. I and 2. Below the discontinuity temperatures, the slopes were markedly different, but the relations remained linear. In general, as the amount of the third eletnent was increased, the slope of the lower portion of the relations tended to become less positive. The slopes of electromotive force-temperature relations reflect the entropy of mixing of zinc and, therefore, the occurrence of a discontinuity marks the transition between two different equilibrium situations involving the solution of zinc. A number of other investigators3-5 have used such observations to determine liquidus boundaries in binary alloys. Since the upper portions of the ternary electromotive force-temperature relations of this study had the same slopes as the binary alloys, the discontinuities are interpreted as marking the transition between the single-phase liquid region and the underlying two- and three-phase regions. Reference to the Zn-Bi equilibrium diagram6 confirms that the binary alloys were single-phase liquids at the experimental temperatures. Fig. I shows the electromotive force-temperature relations for the alloys containing Bi-Zn-Au and Fig. 2 shows similar relations for the Bi-Zn-Cu alloys. In the lower portion of each figure, the temperature of the discontinuity is plotted vs the mole fraction of the added solute at the various levels of zinc concentra- tion. Cross-plots from these curves at constant temperature permitted the construction of the partial liquidus surface isotherms shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

THIS PAPER will review Canada's fossil fuel situation as we understand it today and indicate some of the options available to meet our energy requirements during the next 15 years. It would therefore be helpful to examine Canada's total energy requirements and discuss the un certainties of the data base on which we must base future energy investment decisions. On the world scene, Canada is at the top of the energy-consuming nations, using about 49 bbls of oil equivalent per caput/ year. This appears to be slightly ahead of the U.S. and of course much higher than that of many countries. It is generally accepted that there is a more or less direct relationship between energy consumption and material standard of living. However , as we know, Canada, when compared with other industrialized countries on a GNP, an individual-income or some other standard basis, is lower in the list. This situation may be explained by our more severe climate and a relatively small population distributed over a land mass second only to that of the Soviet Union.

Four binary alloys in this system were creep tested at 300°' to 600°F. A photographic study of microstructural changes showed that the outstanding creep resistance results primarily from a potent precipitation hardening locally at grain boundaries. Twinning was correlated with the primary stage and nonbasal slip with the tertiary stage of creep. THE utility of the rare earth metals as ingredients of magnesium alloys destined for elevated temperature application has been recognized for about 15 years. A review of the early development of these alloys has been given by Leontis. 1,2 It has been only recently that a desire has arisen to understand basically their remarkable creep resistance. The present research had that object. The work of Leontis showed that the differences between the behavior of the individual magnesium-rare earth element binaries was of commercial significance. However, the variations were small compared to the overall difference in creep resistance between the group as a whole and the magnesium alloys of the Al-Zn type. It was decided to conduct this investigation with one binary system which would be representative of the magnesium-rare earth element alloy group. Cerium was chosen as the solute because of its near-middle position in the series and because of its availability in the commercially pure form. A previously published description of the creep behavior of electrolytic magnesium" serves as the background to this research. The experimental approach used in that investigation has been partially repeated here. A series of binary alloys was planned to include the following: 1—A dilute alloy which would contain the cerium almost entirely in solid solution. This would assess the solid solution effect. 2—An alloy which is nearly saturated at the selected solution heat treatment temperature, 1070°F. Here the effect of nearly maximum precip- itation would be obtained without the influence of undissolved Mg-Ce intermetallic. 3—An alloy containing slightly more cerium than is soluble at 1070°F. This would allow the investigation of the effect of a small amount of excess intermetallic. 4—A high cerium alloy in which the influence of a large volume of undissolved intermetallic may be examined. Experimental Details In order to specify compositions of the binary alloy series a knowledge of the solubility of commercially pure cerium in solid electrolytic magnesium and also of the composition of the terminal intermetallic phase was necessary. The latter has been proven to be approximately Mg,Ce by Voge14 and Haughton and Schofield.5 A series of both cast and extruded alloys were solution heat treated 24 hr at 1070°F for a solubility determination. An important class of mining problems involves excavations in planar seam or vein-type deposits. In many instances it can be assumed that the seam is at 'infinite' depth in a homogeneous, isotropic or transversely isotropic, linearly elastic rock mss, and that the normal to the plane of the seam is a principal stress direction. Rational planning of excavations in such deposits requires a knowledge; of the stresses and displacements induced by complicated, irregular excavation geometries in the plane of the seam. This problem previously has been solved either numerically or by means of an electrical resistance network analog. Both of these methods effectively simulate the mined portions of the seam as a dislocation in an otherwise continuous mass, and determine the complete solution in terms of the stresses and displacements at the seam. In both cases, the plane of the seam is divided into a number - say, M x N - of squares, and the solution to the problem is determined in terms of the solution to an M x N system of equations. The numerical approach requires that these equations be solved explicitly, while the analog; solves them instantaneously with current analogous to stress and voltage to displacement. A purely numerical solution of practical problems can require a substantial amount of computer time, particularly in situations that demand some sort of sequential analysis, either due to successive mining or to nonlinear behavior of the seam material. This report describes a combined analog-digital computer system for solving problems that are impractical when either device is used separately. The digital computer and the analog are interfaced so that the digital computer can receive information from the analog via a switching matrix and an analog to digital converter, and can activate points of the analog via another switching matrix and a set of digital to analog converters. The resulting hybrid system can be used to simulate arbitrary "stress-strain" characteristics for any portion of the seam by an iterative procedure similar to the initial strain method used in nonlinear finite element analysis. Thus, the hybrid system combines the speed of analog computation with the decision-making capability of the digital computer: the analog instantaneously solves the set of equations, and the digital computer decides how the initial strains must be altered for the solution to be compatible with the prescribed "stress-strain" characteristics for the seam material. The hybrid computer system has many implications for rational planning of underground excavations, since it allows practically any type of inelastic seam behavior or artificial support characteristics to be simulated. Inelastic seam behavior, for example, might be due to either rock failure or to time-dependent deformation.

The Bureau of Mines conducted this study to provide information concerning the availability of and the demand for construction-mineral aggregates in the Baltimore, Md., Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA). The demand is discussed with reference to the area's current consumption and estimates of the area's demand for aggregates through 1990. Estimates of aggregate supply are presented in conjunction with an examination of the geology of the area, the availability of substitutes, and the effect of transportation costs. A discussion of the constraints affecting aggregate availability precedes the conclusions and recommendations. The availability of aggregates is subject to geologic, economic, and political constraints. As of January 1974, an estimated 20,100 million tons of stone was available to meet the demand projected through 1990 (188.7 million tons). An estimated 139 million tons of sand and gravel was available to meet the demand projected through 1990 (84.3 million tons). Several alternative actions are available within the area to insure the adequacy of the stone supply and to increase the supply of sand and gravel: (1) The establishment of special mineral resource zones; (2) the application of sequential land use techniques; and (3) the exploration of previously undeveloped regions.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE COUNCIL AND ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30th JUNE, 1969 The President: "Ladies and gentlemen, It is with much pleasure that I present to you the Annual Report and Accounts for the year ended 30th June, 1969. These have been laid on the chairs and before calling for their adoption I would like to make a few comments. The Accounts show an excess of expenditure over income of R2,124 and our Honorary Treasurer, Mr D. G. Maxwell, will in due course comment on this. The main difficulty has again been the cost of the Journal and I think most of you are aware of the changes that we propose to make. I shall be sorry to see the last of our old format but then I have always had rather a con¬servative outlook.

Since early July, domestic producer listings in primary aluminum ingot have been at 53¢ per pound. Dealers, however, lowered their August quotes by 1.8¢-2¢ to 47.5¢-48¢ per pound. BITUMINOUS COAL AND LIGNITE -The wildcat strike of UMWA coal miners which began on June 23 in protest of cutbacks in medical benefits appears to have ended. According to the West Virginia Coal Association on September 7, 1977, all mines in West Virginia were back in operation on September 6 and again on September 7. The Kentucky Coal Association reported approximately 2,500 miners were on strike in eastern Kentucky on September 6, but there was full employment on September 7.

A heavy mineral deposit about 1.6 km (1 mile) in length, 0.13 km (0.08 mile) in width and averaging about 3 m (10 ft) in thickness is exposed approximately 130 km (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert county, CO near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy-mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Ga. Thus, Titanium ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.
