"Natural graphite exists mainly in three types of amorphous graphite, flakes graphite and lump graphite. Graphite from Bao Ha mine, Lao Cai province is with 11.8 carbon-graphite %, forms in flakes and dense crystals. The paper presents the comparison among enrichment of Bao Ha’s graphite by two types of froth flotation with 90 g/t kerosene oil as collector, 50 g/t montanol 800 as frother, in natural pH, and at 20 wt.% of solid. The differences among three flow charts indicated that using middling flotation and re-middling flotation for the cleaning tails and the scavenger concentrates, the final concentrate was improved and containing up to 94 carbon-graphite % of flakes graphite, up to 82 carbon-graphite % of fine graphite with 93.48 % total recovery, moreover, carbon-graphite in the final tail is 0.86 % with 6.52 % recovery. However, a refining mill and a classification stage were applied before doing the middling flotation stages.1. INTRODUCTIONGraphite (black lead or plumbago) is used in many industrial applications due to its high electrical and thermal conductivity, lubricity, and chemical inertness. High quality graphite can be used in metallurgy, molding, brake linings, batteries, and fuel cells. Graphite, composed exclusively of the element Carbon, is rather common mineral, but fine crystals are rare. Graphite is soft (hardness: 0.5-1 Mohs scale); has a layered, planar structure; occurs in platy or acicular (occasionally) morphology (Minerals.net; Pierson, 1993).USGS (2017) reported, global consumption of natural graphite continuing increase in the period of 2012-2016. In 2016, China used up 35% while produced 66% of the world’s graphite. Graphite mining are being developed in Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia and Tanzania, but production reduced in Canada from 2015. Based on the statistic of Statista.com shows from 2011 to 2014 and a forecast to 2020, the global graphite demand is mostly in refractories, batteries, others, lubricant/crucible, foundry and pencil, and that is increase every year.Graphite Vietnam lies on the fault of the Red river from Yen Bai to Lao Cai, the reserves is estimated around 29.3 million ton and mostly in Lao Cai province where has Nam Thi graphite mine and Bao Ha graphite mine (MOIT, 2008). Vietnamese graphite products could reached to ~92% graphite carbon (Cg) (Tran Thi Hien et al., 2008). Studied samples was collected in Bao Ha graphite mine, is located in Lao Cai province. Graphite Bao Ha exists in two types as graphite flakes and amorphous (Hoang Thi Minh Thao et al., 2017)."

Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

Lead, zinc, copper, silver, cadmium and many other heavy metals which are potentially hazardous if released into the environment in wastewater discharges have been of considerable concern to governmental agencies, industry and the general public. In response to this concern, an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Missouri has been funded by the National Science Foundation-RANN program to study trace contaminants associated with the production of lead for the past eight years. Seven modern mines in close proximity to two lead smelters in the forested Ozarks of Southeast Missouri are the largest source of lead in the world and in 1976 alone produced 504,095 short tons of lead, 82% of the United States total production. This new and rapid industrial development in a sparsely populated. rural forest region has offered a unique opportunity for studying the impact of trace metals and for developing improved techniques to control detrimental effects. Research on the wastewater discharges and two methods of biological and recycle control are discussed in this paper. Although the two mine-mill complexes investigated in this study have many similarities, the differences between the two are substantive and warrant separate examination.

Each year, Florida mines approximately 40 million tons of phosphorite, most of which is ultimately converted to various commercial fertilizers. The phosphorite is mined from within the bottom portion of the 40-to 60-ft. thick surficial aquifer, using open pit mining techniques. The ore zone or "matrix" is generally overlain by relatively permeable fine sand to silty and slightly clayey fine sand. The ore itself is highly variable in nature but, in Central Florida, typically consists of less permeable clayey phosphatic sands and sandy clays with stringers of permeable sand. The ore is much more sandy in the north Florida mining area.

"Before the war, the United States was the world’s leading consumer of tin, the industrial applications of which had become widespread. Domestic production was negligible, and requirements were met almost entirely by imports, principally from British Malaya, United Kingdom and China. Average annual imports for the years 1925-1929 amounted to 78,009 long tons.With the advent of war in Europe and signing of the Japanese-German pact, it was realized that foreign sources of supplies were threatened, and steps were taken by Congress to forestall critical shortages of tin and other minerals. These steps in regard to tin included stock-piling, improving reclamation and conservation, increasing South American production, constructing a smelter in the United States for treatment of tin, ores, and intensifying the search for domestic tin deposits. Annual imports were raised to 140,873 long tons by 1941. On 1945, annual imports had shrunk to 37,675 long tons and consumption had been reduced to 52,100 tons of primary and secondary tin but not tin content of scrap alloy.The Strategic Minerals Act, passed by the Congress in 1939, authorized the investigation of domestic tin deposits.As Alaska had supplied virtually all of the domestic output of tin, an investigation of Alaska deposits was undertaken in 1940 and 1941 by J. B. Mertie, Jr., and Robert R. Coats of the Geological Survey.The Lost River lode tin mine on the Seward Peninsula was examined by H. E. Heide of the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Possibilities for developing a significant amount of tin appeared favorable, and exploration of the ore bodies was started in August 1942."

The heavy liquid separation (HLS) process was investigated by the Bureau of Mines to develop a means of concentrating minerals from natural ores, Various spodumene ores were tested in a 0.4-inch diameter cyclone using pure tetrabromoethane (TBE) as the heavy liquid. Studies were initiated to examine the influence of (1) pulp density (2) feed grade, (3) cyclone pressure, (4) cyclone apex opening size) (5) cyclone vortex finder opening sand (6) mineral particle size on the separation efficiency. Each of these factors was found to affect the heavy liquid separation in some degree; the mineral particle size exhibited the greatest effect and the ore feed grade the least. Conditions necessary to yield an 85 percent spodumene concentrate with an 85 percent recovery were determined to be: 70 psig pressure, 10 percent solids, 0.08-inch apex opening, 0.11-inch vortex finder opening and a minimum amount of minus 200-mesh fines in the feed. Operation of multiple cyclones in series resulted in spodumene concentrates assaying over 90 percent and indicated mineral recoveries exceed-in 90 percent.

Base-metal sulfide refractory gold ores often contain a portion of ‘free’ gold that is amenable to recovery using gravity concentration methods, whilst the refractory portion of the gold is better recovered using flotation. The decision as to whether a plant treating a refractory gold ore should utilise gravity concentration or a flash flotation circuit (or a combination of both) within the grinding circuit is usually made at the design stage of flow sheet development. Very limited data is available in the published literature which provides an industrial scale comparison on which to base such a decision and conventional laboratory testing methods are often the only way of obtaining such data. The optimum processing route will also be mineralogy dependent.This paper presents the findings of operating a refractory gold plant with either flash flotation (normal operation) or a combination of flash and gravity recovery methods treating the cyclone underflow stream and will demonstrate the regions of the recovery profile that each contributes to. Size-by-assay analysis has been performed on a number of streams around the operating plant to gain an insight into the changes that occur when the gravity circuit is in operation in addition to the flash flotation circuit. "Automated Mineralogy (AM) is an important diagnostic tool in flotation plants as it adds ore and particle mineralogical properties to traditional mass and chemical data. AM is used in project development, for future ore studies and for diagnosing concentrator operations. With the exception of operations who own central laboratory or on-site systems, the use of AM is often limited to the analysis of a comparatively small set of samples. Metrix Plant Technologies has partnered with TESCAN to integrate TIMA AM technology into the implementation of Performance Assessment Campaigns (PAC). Routine daily composite samples from the mill are analysed mineralogically on a size-by-size basis over several weeks. All the relevant metallurgical, process control and mineralogical data is combined into a single large database for mass balancing and interactive examination. This paper describes the implementation and results of a PAC at the Agnico Eagle Kittilä gold mine in Finland. Although challenging, the addition of mineralogical data as dependent variables in multivariate analysis leads to a much deeper understanding of the root cause effect of events driving the flotation performance. INTRODUCTION TO STUDY The Kittilä mine, owned by Agnico Eagle, is Europe’s largest primary gold mine, with annual production of approximately 180,000 Oz. The operation is located in Lapland in northern Finland, and is currently expected to operate until 2035. The location of the operation is shown in Figure 1. Historically, the mine was an open pit, although in recent years ore is sourced solely from underground operations. The processing plant features crushing and grinding, followed by carbon flotation and sulphide flotation. Carbon concentrate is a waste stream, and sulphide concentrate reports to pressure oxidation (autoclave) and CIL circuits for gold extraction. The final flowsheet is shown in Figure 2. Following commissioning in late 2008, the operation achieved commercial production on May 1st 2009. Gold recovery in flotation gradually increased to a 92-96% range at a throughput of ~3500-4000 tonnes per day. In late 2014, the operation commissioned a plant expansion to ~5000 tonnes per day. Following a commissioning period, the operation stabilised with recoveries in a 90-94% range, which over any given period was determined to be ~2% lower with statistical significance. The trends from start-up of gold recovery in flotation and throughput are shown as follows in Figure 3. In early 2016, Agnico Eagle Kittilä mine, along with Agnico Eagle Technical Services (AETS) partnered with Metrix Plant Technologies and TESCAN, to perform a Performance Assessment Campaign (PAC) at Kittilä, involving automated mineralogy on five key streams at Kittilä on 40 days selected from a 50 day period between February 15th and April 4th 2016, when plant operations were stable. In addition to the mineralogical data, metallurgical and operational data were pooled into a single, powerful database to explore opportunities for the operation to improve recovery in a sustained manner, ideally to the levels pre-expansion."

Fine coal dewatering is a major problem in the coal industry because the fines hold significant amounts of water and account for two-thirds of the product surface moisture. Present methods include flocculation using polymeric flocculants followed by filtration. But the kinetics of filtration are not favorable with such flocculants. In this study, a novel method involving flocculation with microorganisms for improving the settling rates and dewatering kinetics has been investigated. Two Gram-positive microorganisms, Mycobacterium phlei and Bacillus subtilis were used as bioflocculants. The effect of time, pH and ionic strength of the electrolyte used on adhesion and flocculation were studied. Adhesion tests showed that maximum adsorption occurred in 20 minutes in the pH range of 2-7 and the total amount of bacteria adsorbed was almost the same with both the flocculants. Nearly 98% of the coal flocculated with both the microorganisms in about 5 minutes. The filtration rate of fine coal almost doubled with addition of bacteria and electrolyte and maximum filtration occurred near the point-of-zero-charge of the bacteria.

The destruction of cyanide creates a significant impost on the financial returns of gold mines. These losses increase substantially when ores containing cyanide-soluble copper are treated. Failure to remove or destroy free or WAD cyanide before it is discharged into tailings dams has, on a number of occasions, led to significant fish, bird and animal deaths. Thus, the retention of cyanide within the leach circuit and the recovery or removal of stable metal cyanide complexes needs to become standard practice for all gold mining operations. Furthermore, reducing cyanide purchases will minimise the quantity of cyanide transported to the mine site thereby reducing the opportunity for spillage of this chemical. Many different physical and chemical methods have been investigated for the removal of cyanide from process solutions. All cyanide destruction methods create a financial impost on the economic viability of the gold mine. To reduce these costs, the recycle of cyanide and the economic recovery of the metals solubilised by cyanide is of prime importance. The alternative methods currently in use, or under consideration for the treatment of copper cyanide, entail high reagent costs, produce the recovered metal in a contaminated form and require the safe handling of hydrogen cyanide. These processes will be briefly discussed within this report Environmental and financial benefits are enhanced by recent laboratory and pilot plant studies conducted by Oretek Limited. The Oretek CPC process for the recovery of copper and the recycle of cyanide from copper cyanide-containing solutions does not require pH adjustment to the alkaline cyanide leach conditions. Copper ions are coordinated to a water-soluble and/or an organic soluble polychelating agent under alkaline conditions and the cyanide ions are displaced Membrane separation, or phase separation of the polychelated copper from the cyanide ions enables the cyanide ions to be recycled and the copper to be directly electrowon from the polychelating polymer. The polychelating polymer is then recycled. Ion exchange resins and solvent extraction systems which may be incorporated into the above process will also be discussed in detail.

The deportment of a suite of elements through representative gold ore processing unit operations in cyanidation has been investigated. Chromium and lead are not soluble in alkaline cyanide solutions. Arsenic, antimony, cobalt, molybdenum, selenium, tellurium and vanadium are soluble, but typically do not adsorb onto activated carbon to any appreciable extent. Silver, copper, cadmium, mercury, nickel and zinc to varying extents report along with the gold to the carbon eluate. Cadmium, mercury and zinc can report to the carbon regeneration kiln off-gases. Strontium is soluble and adsorbs on carbon where it remgins.

The fourth iron ore production plant at Golgohar mining and industrial company consists a ball mill and wet medium intensity magnetic separators (3500 Guss). The ball mill product applies directly into MIMS and the MIMS concentrate directly transfers to the low intensity magnet separators (LIMS). The thickener is used for dewatering of MIMS and LIMS tailings. By sampling from streams of ball mill and separators, it was defined that the grade and iron recovery were 60% and 80% respectively while they would be 66% and 90% respectively based on the designing documentation. The average of P80 in the ball mill was 342 micron in a month that is coarser than optimized value. This problem was related to unsuitable operation of grinding. For optimization of grinding efficiency, the amount of charge volume was investigated as a variable. The measurements illustrated 32% charge volume. For increasing grinding efficiency, the charge volume was increased 1% and 1.6% in two stages. The results showed ball mill power draw average reached from 3650 kw to 4120 kw and the average P80 reached to 329 micron. All of parameters calculated about 35 day before and after change. Average of Ball mill feed iron ore grade before and after change was 49.24% and 50.32% respectively. This change caused an increase in efficiency of MIMS, where the enrichment ratio and concentrate grade increased 2% and 1.9% respectively. For increasing the iron grade of the MIMS concentrate; the orifice of the tail flow exit pipe changed from 4 inch to 6 inch and the concentrate grade increased 2%.

The quality of our environment is of great importance to all of us. Today, there is a great public concern about the degradation of our air, land, and water and the resultant slow death of our planet Earth. The miner has always been concerned with his environment. Historically, mining has been a part of the frontier. As a result, the miner has pioneered and developed many parts of the world. In the beginning, he had to hack out a place for his mine, himself, and his family. He was given accolades and praise for his accomplishments. Now, however, he is attacked as a ravager of the landscape. It was and is no different on the Marquette Iron Range in Marquette County, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Iron ore was discovered in 1845 and mining was begun by 1848. Over nearly 1 ¼ centuries, a total of 379,197,000 tons have been shipped to market. Ports, docks, railroads, and towns all had to be built in order to get that tonnage out to iron and steel makers. In those early days the environment had to be mastered, not pampered.

This paper is the third of a series of three on placer mining in the western United States. The first paper4 discusses the history of placer mining in the Western States and the production of placer gold, geology of placer deposits, location of placer claims on public lands, sampling and estimation of gold placers, and classification of placer-mining methods, together with hand-shoveling and ground-sluicing. The second papers deals with hydraulicking, sluice boxes and riffles, recovery of gold and platinum from placer concentrates, treatment of amalgam, and marketing of placer gold. The discussion of sluice boxes and subsequent subjects in the second paper applies to all forms of placer mining. The present paper treats of dredging and other forms of mechanical handling of placer gravels, and drift mining.

Although there are exceptions, oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. When these ores are of high enough grade they can be smelted; indeed, some rather low-grade ores of this type have been smelted at a profit because of their fluxing value. In the past, when these ores could not be smelted, they either were not treated or were treated at low efficiency, generally by cyanidation. The need for thorough investigation of the problem was therefore evident for some time before the writers began their research. The problem of treating manganese-silver ores seems to have been recognized first about 35 years ago by C. W. Goodale in applying pan amalgamation at Tombstone, Ariz. He attributed the low extraction of silver to the fouling of the mercury by manganese rather than to the presence of a refractory compound of manganese and·silver. Although definite knowledge as to the cause of the poor extraction of silver was lacking, a more or less effective preliminary treatment, that is, a chloridizing roast, was applied. E. M. Hamilton, in 1909, was perhaps the first to define clearly the problem as it affects the cyanidation of silver ores and to suggest possible methods of preliminary treatment. Most of the work done in the interval between the appearance of Hamilton's paper and the assumption of the investigation by the authors was in the nature of routine tests covering suggestions already made rather than of research directed to a fundamental study of the problem. No practical application has so far been made of any of these proposed processes. The investigation described in this bulletin has proved that there s a refractory compound of manganese and silver-probably a manganite- insoluble in cyanide solution and other common solvents for silver. Although this compound has not been isolated from natural ores, it has been made synthetically, and shows all the characteristics of the natural product. The proper disposition of phosphatic clays has been the subject of research and debated for years by phosphate producers, State and Federal research agencies, regulatory authorities, and environmentalists. To date, no "universal" solution exists for the ultimate disposl of phosphatic clays. This Bureau of Mines report examines the state of conventional clay disposal technology and reviews the technical progress of innovative alternatives. Twenty impoundment sites were investigated by the Bureau of Mines using geotechnical methods and laboratory analysis of cored samples. In addition, quasi-static cone penetrometer soundings were conducted to define clay and/or sand-clay interfaces en masse. Samples of the top, middle, and bottom hole segments were obtained at each station for laboratory studies of clay densities, pore fluids, plasticity, and mineralogical properties. The results of this study support the continued use of initial clay settling impoundments but emphasize the need for "in-line" systems to reduce the initial volumes of plant-generated phosphatic clays. The effective use of sand tailings is also encouraged to promote further consolidation of clays via self-weight stressing, sand-clay admixtures, and/or surcharging sand caps.

B EFORE discussing the equipment, it would be instructive to review the factors that influenced the management of Opemiska Cop-per Mines to purchase a friction hoist rather than a conventional double drum hoist. The mine required that 250 tons per hour be hoisted from a depth of 2,100 feet. They also specified that the top speed should not exceed 1800 feet per minute. Mine stope is typically backfilled with cemented paste backfill, which provides a regional underground stability and also a reduction of aboveground tailings accumulation. During backfilling, a phenomenon known as arching occurs and affects the stress distribution of the cemented paste backfill. The change in temperature due to uncontrolled heat transfer from the surrounding rock mass and/or generation from hydration process complicates the stress distribution development of cemented paste backfill. This paper presents results of the investigation on the effects of hydration to cemented paste backfill behaviour when backfilled into a narrow wall model using uncemented paste backfill as controlled sample. The parameters considered include backfill type (cemented paste backfill vs uncemented paste backfill), curing temperature (30°C–60°C), and stress evolution during pouring, consolidation, and curing stages. Results show that uncemented paste backfill re-establishes arching effects more readily, with lower peak stresses and greater stress relaxation than cemented paste backfill, of which its behaviour is significantly influenced by hydration under elevated temperatures. The main outcome of this work is that hydration critically controls the stress-temperature response of cemented paste backfill, and the balance between hydration-driven strength gain and stress relaxation can be leveraged to optimise backfill mix design for safer and more efficient stope filling.

With the demand for higher grade feed by the American steel industry and the depletion of the direct shipping ores from the Marquette Iron Range and elsewhere, there was a need to develop the low-grade orebodies. The large reserve of fine grained oxidized iron-formation at the Tilden Mine has been the object of research and development efforts to concentrate the iron oxides as far back as 1949. Preceding the present mining-concentration-pelletizing complex, about 6,500,000 long tons of direct shipping siliceous ore were shipped from the Tilden Mine. Following development of the concentrating and pelletizing flowsheets, engineering and construction was initiated to develop the mine and construct concentrating and pelletizing facilities to produce 4,000,000 LTPY of pellets from this low grade crude ore. Operations started in late 1974 with Algoma Steel, J&L Steel Corp., The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, The Steel Company of Canada, Ltd., Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., and Sharon Steel Corp. as participants. Cleveland-Cliffs operates and manages the operation. Due to the non-magnetic nature of the ore and the fine grinding required to liberate the iron oxide minerals, this crude ore was not amenable to concentration by conventional methods. The iron oxides of the Tilden orebody have a grain size of less than 25 microns and recovery of the finer, well-liberated iron oxides is essential. Conventional methods of des liming employing cyclones or thickeners were not feasible because of the excessive loss of iron oxides in the finer fractions.

"Nickel is an important metal with the total global consumption of about 2 million tons per year. It is sourced from both sulfide and laterite ore, but currently laterites are becoming more attractive for nickel production due to the depletion of high grade nickel sulfide ores. Laterites are generally processed by hydro or pyro-metallurgy and therefore, pre-concentration of nickel before such processes is very important. In this paper the effect different physical methods (including flotation) on the pre-concentration of nickel in laterite ores will be discussed. The ore used in this study was a laterite from South East Asia. Nickel was upgraded using different methods such as magnetic separation, flotation and sizing. The effect of ore mineralogy on choosing the best strategy to upgrade nickel will be discussed. The findings of this project will help to unlock a substantial volume of nickel with significant value from laterite ores.INTRODUCTION Nickel is an important metal with the total global consumption of about million tons per year which has grown rapidly during last decades (Mackey, 2011). Nickel is sourced from two different types of ores, sulfide and laterite. The majority (about 70%) of the world’s nickel resources occur as laterite ores which are often complex, and low grade, and therefore expensive to treat using conventional methods (Xu et al., 2013). Today, nickel laterites are more attractive for production of nickel as the amount of high grade nickel sulfide ores has diminished (Janwong, 2012). Therefore more economic processes to recover nickel from these resources should be developed.It should be noted that nickel laterite mineralogy is complex, and nickel often presents as ultrafine inclusions in a number of mineral phases. Because of the low nickel concentration and variable distribution in these phases, effective upgrading by physical separation processes would be challenging. Researchers have tried to improve nickel laterite flotation recovery by using a number of feed preparation techniques. A summary of the nickel grades obtained using flotation and magnetic separation as reported in the literature is presented in Table 1. It can be seen that only minor nickel upgrades have been reported. Quast et al. (2015) have concluded that the complex mineralogy of nickel laterite ores makes it difficult to achieve any significant nickel upgrading by physical techniques, including flotation. They achieved 40% increase in the nickel content (from 1.0% to 1.4%) at a nickel recovery of 43% (Quast et al., 2015). Various attempts in USA, New Caledonia, India and Australia, to upgrade nickel in laterite using magnetic separation have not been successful (Quast et al., 2015). A recent comprehensive review on topics influencing nickel laterite flotation has shown that further investigations in the flotation of laterite ores are undoubtedly warranted (Farrokhpay & Filippov, 2016)."
