"The paper presents the results of research on the development of gold and silver extraction technology from refractory gold sulphide flotation concentrate of one deposits of Nord-East of Russia. The concentrate is due to the complex mineral composition. Gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals (arsenopyrite and pyrite partially oxidized by 7-11%). These are characterized by high content of silver 219 g/t and sulphide sulfur 32%, the presence of poorly soluble silver minerals (silver sulfosalts, fahlore, finely dispersed hypergenic acanthite in iron hydroxides and jarosite, etc.), and impurity minerals capable of interacting with cyanide (pyrrhotite, marcasite, nonferrous sulphides) and causing higher than normal cyanide consumption. Pretreatment of refractory sulphide concentrate by biooxidation using a mixed association of mesophilic and moderately thermophilic bacteria at a temperature of 36-40 °C for 120 hours oxidized arsenopyrite by 97.5%, pyrite by 93.5%, unlocked refractory gold, and generally oxidized the minerals absorbing cyanide and oxygen before cyanidation. Further oxidation of these minerals-absorbents was facilitated by the aeration in calcareous medium of the solid biooxidation residues of the concentrate. Sorption cyanidation of the solid biooxidation residues with addition of lead (II) of recovered 91.2% of gold and 82.9% silver from biooxidation residue, compared with 80.1% and 46.6%, respectively, for sorption cyanidation without the preceding biooxidation step. Biooxidation of the concentrate prior to cyanidation improves the recovery of precious metals, especially silver, and significantly reduces cyanide consumption from 18.7 kg/t to 3-5 kg/t of concentrate. INTRODUCTION Biooxidation of gold sulphide concentrates using acidophilic microorganisms has been successfully applied worldwide (van Aswegen et al., 2007; Gericke et al., 2009; Sovmen et al., 2007; Sovmen et al., 2009). At least 15 full-scale plants for tank biooxidation of sulphide concentrates are presently in operation, and the construction of new ones is planned (Bulaev et al, 2015)."

"The research applies the density functional theory and molecule design technology to design and synthesize the novel flotation collectors for copper-sulphur separation. Density functional theory (DFT) was applied to investigate the electronic properties of O-isopropyl-N-benzyl thionocarbamate (IP-BIAN) and O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200). The calculation results show that both the energy of highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO) of IP-BIAN are smaller than that of Z-200, electronegativity of IP-BIAN is higher than that of Z-200. According to the Klopman’s generalized perturbation theory, the collecting power of the two compounds is predicted to be Z-200 > IP-BIAN, the selectivity of IP-BIAN is better than that of Z-200. Then the thionocarbamate molecular is synthesized, and the compounds are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It turns out that the test result identifies the prediction after the flotation verified test of pure mineral and actual mineral. The results demonstrate that the EHOMO and ELUMO are smaller in the thionocarbamate after a nitrogen atom is bound to benzyl, the thionocarbamate has strong selectivity and low collecting power. The lower the LUMO energy of thionocarbamate is, the stronger the back donation covalent p-bond between collectors and chalcopyrite is, thus improving flotation power for chalcopyrite and selectivity against pyrite. The result proves the feasibility of design and synthesis of the novel thionocarbamate through the frontier orbital properties of the collectors.1. INTRODUCTION Thiocarbamate is a kind of nonionic polar collector and is now widely used as flotation collector for copper-sulphur separation. The flotation power of thiocarbamate to chalcopyrite is stronger than pyrite, so it has high selectivity against pyrite. The frontier orbital theory and density functional theory (DFT) has been widely applied to study the structure-activity relationship of flotation collectors [1-6]. The flotation test results can be interpreted by using the reaction energy criteria and quantum-chemical parameters, such as the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO) and the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO) of collector [7-11]. In turn, there are rarely reports about screening the novel flotation collector, by the frontier orbital properties such as HOMO and LUMO of flotation collectors. In this thesis, we apply the density functional theory and molecule design technology to design and synthesize the novel flotation collectors for copper-sulphur separation. Based on the previous findings of the structure-activity relationship of xanthogen formats [12], it has stronger collecting ability to chalcopyrite while the xanthogen formats after a nitrogen atom is bound to benzyl. Thus, in this study, a novel thionocarbamate molecule O-isopropyl-N-benzyl thionocarbamate (IP-BIAN) will be constructed, when the group structure connected with N atom in the known collector O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200) is replaced with ethyl by propyl. The collectors (IP-BIAN and Z-200) have been calculated by DFT methods in quantum chemistry. By analyzing the reaction energy criteria and the frontier orbital properties (HOMO and LUMO), this research predicts flotation performance of novel collectors (IP-BIAN), then the synthetic experiments and flotation verified tests are conducted. The research provides a new theory reference for screening out the high-effective flotation collectors of copper-sulphur separation. This technology adoption will contribute to the sustainable development of mineral resources as it shortens the research cycle of new collector molecules and reduces the investment."

An innovative hybrid technology for beneficiation of difficult-to-process sedimentary copper ores comprising acidic leaching stage of the feed combined with subsequent flotation has been presented. Acidic leaching, preceding the flotation process, plays a beneficial role of efficient chemical grinding for liberation of copper sulphide minerals finely disseminated in the copper-bearing carbonate-shale rocks. The process was applied on a fully industrial scale. Flotation results were analysed for both chemically modified and unmodified flotation feeds. After several months of industrial scale operation, it was found that both metals recovery and concentrate grade remarkably increased as a result of application of chemical modification of the flotation feed. Beneficial effects of chemical pre-treatment of flotation middlings on selectivity at a comparable concentrate yield in industrial flotation scale, revealed a considerable increase of the total copper recovery by 3.5percent. Based on the industrial and laboratory investigations we consider a further development of the process and introduction of hydrometallurgy for better recovering of metals from low-grade copper concentrates

The Mount Isa Copper Concentrator was commissioned in 1973. Since commissioning some significant upgrades have been undertaken such as: • the replacement of the rod mill/ball mill circuit with AG mills and the subsequent conversion of the AG mills to SAG Mills. • the introduction of columns as retreat cleaners in 1987, then reallocated as prefloat cleaners in 1994 and rougher cleaners in 1996.• the repurposing of some rougher capacity to preflotation roughing to remove carbonaceous pyrite and talc in 1994.• the introduction of a Jameson Cell for preflotation cleaning in 2000. • the expansion of the rougher and cleaner circuits in 2002 with the inclusion of 6 x 100 m3 Wemco cells to replace the capacity lost to preflotation and to increase residence time and improve recovery. In 2013 work commenced to replace the cleaner circuit after 40 years of operation. The new cleaner circuit, consisting of 3 x B5400/18 Jameson Cells, replaced the rougher cleaner columns, cleaners, recleaners and retreat Agitair banks and was commissioned in Sep 2015. The new cleaner circuit was configured as two cells in series producing the final concentrate and a cleaner scavenger cell to supplement the existing Wemco cleaner scavenger cells. Introduction This paper may be regarded as another instalment of the story of the Britannia milling operation. From time to time in the past, articles (1) have been prepared by various members of the staff, giving details of crushing, grinding, and flotation treatment for the normal Britannia ore. It is not, therefore, the purpose of the present paper further to discuss what may be termed the standard milling operation, but rather to describe a flotation practice which has been evolved directly as a result of the general depression. The normal Britannia ore mixture contains chalcopyrite and pyrite as the main sulphide minerals, together with minor gold and silver values. The standard milling practice, evolved during several years of experimentation, provided for bulk flotation of the two sulphides after primary grinding to only approximately 35-mesh, followed by regrinding of the bulk concentrate, with subsequent separation of the chalcopyrite and pyrite to make a marketable concentrate of each mineral. However, in the face of a constantly increasing surplus of copper on the world markets and a steadily falling price during 1930 and 1931, it was obviously undesirable to continue producing large quantities of this metal at a loss. On the other hand, Company officials were very reluctant to add to unemployment by closing down entirely, provided operations could be continued without excessive losses. Fortunately, the existence was known of a fair sized body of ore, quite low in copper and relatively high in zinc content, with also a very considerably higher gold value than that prevailing in other sections of the mine.

The McDonald Gold Project and two satellite gold deposits near Lincoln, Montana, contain at least 9.9 million ounces of gold and 30 million ounces of silver. The McDonald gold deposit alone contains 7.2 million ounces of gold reserves that can be open-pit mined and processed by cyanide heap leaching at a projected cash operating cost of $190 per ounce. The deposit is predominantly oxidized with no chance of acid production, and can be mined, operated, and reclaimed with minimal permanent environmental disturbance other than the creation of an open pit filled with a fresh-water lake which would support trout. The Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture, the owner of the McDonald Gold Project, commenced permitting of an open-pit, heap-leach operation in November 1994. In 1998, Montana citizens passed an anti-cyanide, open-pit mining initiative, 1-137, which banned any new open-pit gold mine which uses cyanide processing, The Venture has conducted extensive studies, including metallurgical testing of the treatability of McDonald ores with alternative lixiviants, and has determined that all other mining and metallurgical treatment systems are vastly uneconomical in the recovery of gold and silver from the McDonald deposit. Therefore, the Venture's proposed open-pit mining and cyanide heap-leach processing is the only technology that can be applied economically to the McDonald deposit. Further, the analyses convincingly demonstrate that the proposed open-pit, cyanide heap leaching technology results in maximum resource conservation of this valuable and unique deposit and poses far less risk to human health and the environment than any of the alternative technologies.

"To optimize gold recovery in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, Gekko Systems developed the Gekko resin exchange column (G-REX) as an intermediate step, using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin. Operational experience has been gained at the Castlemaine Goldfields Ballarat gold mine. In near-continuous operation since 2008, the Ballarat plant treats unclarified concentrate leach solution. This resin is highly selective for gold and silver over many metals, by way of extracting precious metal–cyanide complexes from leach solutions with a pH of less than 11.5. The higher end of the pH scale produces the best selectivity according to the order of preference: Au > Ag > Hg > Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Fe. Purolite produces the resin and Gekko Systems maintains licensing of AuRIX100 resin for use in its G-REX column, as part of its unique suite of gravity gold–handling equipment.Significant cost savings over carbon-in-solution (CIS) systems are realized with AURIX100 resin: approximately 4–12% in capital savings and 27–40% in operating costs (Virnig, Mackenzie, Katsikaros, & Gray, 2004). Additionally, AuRIX100 resin is not susceptible to fouling; that is, the resin does not load with inorganic salts or organic compounds that would affect the loading and extraction of precious metals. To counter any potential for fouling by inorganic salts, a dilute acid wash is periodically conducted in service on the resin to unblock resin pores."

In this present research, a polymer poly (acrylamide-allyl thiourea) (PAM-ATU) with an average molecular weight 1.66 × 104 g/mol was used as a depressant in the flotation separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite and galena. The micro-flotation experimental results showed that PAM-ATU exhibited a strong influence on the flotation performances of chalcopyrite and galena, but had little effect on that of molybdenite within a pH range of 9.0~11.0 at a dosage of lower than 6.0 mg/L. The flotation results of bulk flotation tests illustrated that PAM-ATU showed a stronger depression power than sodium thioglycollate (TGA) and sodium sulfide. The comparison results demonstrated that PAM-ATU and TGA had an advantage in reducing galena and chalcopyrite impurities in the molybdenum concentrate, respectively. With the combination of PAM-ATU and TGA, a good flotation separation result was achieved through one roughing operation where the recovery of molybdenum in the froth product was over 75.0%, while the recovery of copper and lead were less than 22.0% and 15.0%, individually. It was also found that a molybdenum concentrate with Mo grade of 46.32%, Cu grade of 0.16%, Pb grade of 0.06%, was obtained by a closed circuit flotation flowsheet of one roughing-three scavenging-five cleaning with a Mo recovery of 77.67%. Flotation concentrate originating from the Asarel-Medet porphyry copper mining and processing complex in Bulgaria has been subjected to regrinding using a Ro-Star mill; the effects of which on the downstream metallurgical behaviour are discussed. Particularly the effect on the liberation degree was studied through an optical microscopy and MLA-SEM automated mineralogy. On the other hand, copper selective flotation of the reground bulk concentrate was realised to evaluate the anticipated metallurgical improvement. Process parameters such as involvement of prior hydrocycloning and variation of collector dosage have been evaluated. Within a two-minute residence time inside the Ro-Star mill, an improved liberation degree of the copper bearing minerals has been observed. As a consequence, enhanced copper recovery and selectivity against pyrite was noted. It has been found that in order to guarantee efficient flotation of the resulting ultrafine particles, a modified flotation regime (i.e. changing collector suite and dosages) should be followed. Laboratory leach tests have been carried out by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission to compare the effectiveness of Caro's acid (permonosulphuric acid) as an alternative oxidant to pyrolusite in the leaching of uranium ores. Results demonstrated that Caro's acid reduced acid consumption in leaching and the lime required for neutralisation of tailings liquor. The uranium extraction was unaffected by choice of oxidant.Following this study, Interox Chemicals Pty Ltd arranged a plant trial using Caro's acid at the Nabarlek uranium mill of Queensland Mines Ltd. The trial confirmed that significant savings in acid and lime usage can be achieved under plant conditions.Plant operations also demonstrated that Caro's acid has a number of significant operating advantages over pyrolusite.Queensland Mines Ltd have recently decided to convert their leaching process from pyrolusite to Caro's acid. The new system is expected to be fully operational by mid 1983.

The impact of seismic loading on open pit slope stability in Australia is often only considered where the slopes are located adjacent to tailings facilities or other major infrastructure. The debate regarding application of seismic loading in open pit design in Australia is usually founded on limited reporting on significant damage of open pit operations during earthquakes, the common perception that earthquakes do not occur in Australia or that they are unlikely to occur during the mine life of the mine. It is frequently overlooked that pit slopes that have withstood strong earthquakes in highly active seismic regions are often designed under strict seismic guidelines. This paper discusses the factors that impact earthquake performance of open mine slopes. These factors include topography, slope geometry, rock material and mass properties, water management and intrinsic pit design. Further, the paper presents insights into the characteristics of earthquake activity in Australia such as magnitude distribution, earthquake depths, areas prone of earthquake activity and general seismic hazard that are relevant to pit design. Guidelines are provided on the conditions and circumstances under which earthquake design in open pit mining should be considered. In addition, this paper provides recommendation on the applicable methods for assessment of the impacts of earthquake loading on pit slope stability.

This report presents the results of evaluating a longwall mining system specifically designed to extract a very deep web (60 inches or deeper) from a longwall panel. The report includes a productivity and cost analysis comparing the new mining sys-tem with a high capacity conventional longwall operation taking a 30-inch wide web. The analysis shows the new system will increase annual production 44 percent and decrease cost per ton off the face 21 percent. The report also includes conceptual drawings and specifications for a high capacity four-drum shearer and a unique shield type of roof support specifically designed for very wide web operation. The advantages and problems associated with wide web mining are discussed in general and as they relate specifically to the equipment selected for the new mining system. The study concludes by recommending that surface coal loading tests be conducted as the follow-on work.

The present project sought alternatives for this material through the Mining Lab Beginnings program, which was developed by Nexa in partnership with Escalab to find solutions for the company's highly complex challenges. Through the program, several solutions were evaluated, with additives for the construction market being the most prominent. Tests were conducted to confirm the efficiency of jarosite in the mixture that composes this material. With successful laboratory tests, the technology was tested on an industrial scale, where it also demonstrated its technical and economic viability. The project is now moving into the operational phase, demonstrating that circular economy is the best solution for disposed tailings.

This handbook describes effective methods for the control of mineral dusts in mines and tunnels. It assumes the reader is familiar with mining. The first chapter deals solely with dust control methods, regardless of the application. It is a brief tutorial on mining dust control and will be of help to the reader whose dust control problem does not conveniently fit any of the mining equipment niches described in later chapters. The subsequent chapters describe dust control methods for different kinds of mines and mining equipment. This includes underground coal and hard-rock mines, as well as surface mines, stone mines, and hard-rock tunnels. Because dust sampling has so many pitfalls, a chapter on methods used to sample dust is included. For those occasions when there is no practical engineering control, a chapter on respirators is also included. Except for those listed as ?future possibilities? in the longwall chapter, the dust control methods described are practical and cost-effective for most mine operators. If controlling dust were a simple matter, dust problems in tunnels and mines would have been eradicated years ago. Unfortunately, most underground dust control methods yield only 25% to 50% reductions in respirable-sized dust. Often, 25% to 50% reductions are not enough to achieve compliance with dust standards. Thus, mine operators must use several methods simultaneously, usually without knowing for sure how well any individual method is working. In fact, given a 25% error in dust sampling and day-to-day variations in dust generation of 50% or more, certainty about which control methods are most effective can be wanting. Nevertheless, over the years, some consensus has emerged on the best dust control practices. This handbook summarizes those practices.

Indications are that underground mining is gaining favour with large and small mining companies due to environmental and sustainability concerns. Dramatic changes to mine fill technologies will be needed in order to keep pace with these emerging trends. The industry will be compelled to gravitate toward zero discharge mining operations. Innovative handling of mine tailings will become a focal point in this effort. The challenges are to use a greater portion of the residues and to manufacture a fill with better properties. This is a tall order that can only be addressed through a systematic research and implementation process involving mining companies, universities, research organizations, manufacturers and governments. The mining industry has to be at the forefront of this technology push in mine fills for the future mines. It will also be called upon to lead the way in other research areas. The industry will have to partner with other technology providers: universities, government laboratories and consultants.

"Tin sulfide ores and aged man-made products obtained after their processing are distinguished by a complex material composition and uneven impregnation of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin ore (cassiterite). Enrichment of such ores is performed through sophisticated multistage schemes using not only gravitational methods, but also gravity flotation, flotation, magnetic separation techniques. Tin ores also contain rare and precious metals (indium, scandium, silver), characterized by fine dispersity and microscale to nanoscale fineness of mineral formations. During flotation concentration these metals are extracted along with the main ore minerals into concentrates (tin, copper, tungsten, etc.), however, up to 10-20 % of them are lost with final tailings. The aim of the work is an experimental study of the modification of the surface of sulfide minerals and cassiterite by stable metal-collector complexes to increase extraction of fine tin, silver, copper and other metals from complex tin ores. Triamide cyanuric acid (TCA) was studied as a thin silver flotation modifier. Thermophilic polymer with a functional group of phenylphosphine TMPPh was used as a selective flocculant. For experimental studies of the physical and chemical effects of collecting agents on the surface of minerals the following analytical techniques were used - the analytical scanning electron emission ASEM (LEO 1420VP INCA OXFORD ENERGY 350) and laser (KEYENCE VK-9700) microscopy, measurements of electrode potentials of mineral anthills by potentiometric titration, monomineral and pulp flotation. New data on formation of the adsorbed layer of DBDTC on the surface of chalcopyrite, galena and arsenopyrite were obtained, and the dimensions of the reagent films and the strength of their adsorption. The indiscriminateness of cassiterite to DBDTC ensures its selective separation into a chamber product during the flotation of sulfides. It is shown, that modification of the sulfide surface by stable complexes Me-DBDTC and Ag-TCA-TMPPh will increase the recovery of non-ferrous metals and silver into a collective sulfide concentrate and will provide a high-quality tin concentrate for flotation of tin sulfide ores.The studies were perfomed with the aid of the Russian Science Foundation (Project No. 17-17-01292).INTRODUCTIONTin sulfide ores and aged man-made products obtained after their processing are distinguished by a complex material composition and uneven impregnation of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin ore (cassiterite). "Mercury bearing ore bodies are often treated for the production of copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver. The mercury deports either to tailings or is collected during various stages of the extraction process. This paper reviews the relationship between various mercury collection processes and the subsequent management of the mercury by-product or waste. It focuses on mercury removal sequestration including cementation, sulphide precipitation, bulk neutralization, and carbon adsorption. Long term mercury management strategies including third-party stabilization, stabilized mercury co-disposal, secure storage, and mercury recycle are also evaluated. INTRODUCTIONMercury is produced in North America as a by-product of non-ferrous metals processing and from recycling of products such as dental amalgam, fluorescent lamps, and thermometers. Its toxicity is recognized to have significant negative impacts on the environment and human health. As a result, many countries are adopting regulations limiting mercury use and its uncontrolled release.The European Union banned mercury exports in 2011 and the United States will do so in 2013. The export bans aim to prevent mercury use in developing countries for activities such as artisanal small scale gold mining. However, by-product mercury production from the non-ferrous metals industries continues.These factors contribute to an oversupply of mercury and the need to find suitable treatment methods for the long term management and storage of mercury and mercury bearing materials."

Acid mine drainage (AMD) occurs at operating and abandoned mine sites as a result of oxidation of sulphide minerals, and is characterized by low pH and heavy metal contamination (e.g. Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd, Al, Mn). It usually requires treatment before release in order to meet regulatory requirements. Chemical methods, such as lime neutralization and sulphide precipitation, are commonly used to treat AMD. However, the conventional processes require high capital and operating costs, and constant attention for many years into the future. In addition, the amount of sludge produced by conventional lime treatment processes poses an increasingly significant disposal problems at decommissioned mining operations. There is, therefore, an urgent need to develop passive, cost-effective processes for mitigating AMD and seepages originating from tailings and waste rock areas. Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) has been evaluating various methods being developed by other institutions, and exploring new ideas, to achieve passive in situ processes for treating AMD. These methods include anoxic limestone (ALS), lime-organic mixture (LOM), biosorbents (BIOS) and biotrench (BT). Current investigations at NTC involve preliminary bench-scale testing. Based on the outcome of the bench tests, a field test will be performed at a selected site. Details of the bench tests are discussed in the paper. Dust mitigation has long been seen as nothing more than managing a nuisance issue, but the reality is that poor dust management can lead to one or more of the following negative consequences: an increased risk of safety incidents, lost revenue, reduced and possibly even lost licence to operate, regulatory intervention, high staff turnover and/or absenteeism and occupational health and safety (OH&S) issues. Dust mitigation and management is not a black art; rather it is a scientifically driven process that can provide an opportunity to increase profits, increase the companyÆs status as an excellent corporate citizen, enhance staff retention and reduce the safety risk profile of the operation.The way to achieve success in dust mitigation and control is to apply the scientific method to each problem that can arise and plague any operation by using current industry best practice. This method of dust problem-solving can be applied to dust issues arising from specific dust sources and locations. The dust sources can include wind impacting on stockpiles, open areas, tailings storage facilities, moving train and truck loads, vehicular traffic on roads, the operation of shovels, front end loaders, draglines and other equipment, as well as ore movement on conveyors.The solutions will come from a combination of deployment of dust collection equipment, dust and moisture monitoring equipment, the appropriate application of water and chemicals, the introduction and maintenance of appropriate barriers and the use of predictive data from local and public weather stations. The paradigm shift required is to view dust mitigation as one aspect of normal operational practice, not a ænice to haveÆ or æunnecessary expenseÆ as most operators currently view it. This attitude is becoming more important as more and more local communities oppose the development of mines. One of the reasons for this local opposition is the inevitable dusty environment that is usually associated with mining.Dust mitigation is not a significant expense if correctly designed and included into the system, either as part of the original design of the operation or as a brownfield installation after the fact. Indeed, there is always a loss of revenue associated with dustiness resulting from ore movement and avoiding this goes a long way to paying for any associated dust mitigating costs.CITATION:Visser, J, 2013.
