"During the past decade, column flotation cells have become widely accepted for upgrading ultrafine sulfide ores. However, the use of columns has been widely relegated to cleaner circuits due to their comparatively high selectivity derived from the use of wash water dispersed over a deep froth. High tonnage rates and low feed grades make using column technology in roughing and scavenger stages challenging due to the resulting size of the needed equipment. To specifically address this challenge, a new high-intensity flotation system known as the StackCell™ was developed. This technology makes use of a novel pre-aeration method coupled with froth washing to simultaneously provide improved flotation kinetics and selectivity. The novel aeration system provides efficient bubble-particle contacting thereby shortening the residence time required for particle collection. This article reviews the technical design features of this new flotation technology and presents recent data from in-plant pilot testing in a copper-sulfide application. INTRODUCTION Column flotation cells have become very popular in the minerals processing industry for cleaner circuits due to their ability to produce a high-grade froth concentrate via the use of froth washing (Luttrell et al., 1999; Kohmuench et al., 2004). The use of wash water minimizes the nonselective recovery of ultrafine impurities that are normally entrained into the froth product from conventional flotation machines. On the other hand, the unique design of a column cell typically requires a large tank volume. Column cells must be tall to ensure that the pulp residence time is long enough to offset their inherently slow flotation kinetics and to minimize internal mixing that is detrimental to overall cell performance. The tall design minimizes the total floor space required for the column installation, but substantially increases the foundation load. The large size of the column tank can also create issues during fabrication, transportation and installation. To address these concerns, the engineering team at Eriez Manufacturing developed a next-generation flotation technology called the StackCell?. This high-intensity flotation machine was designed to provide column-like separation performance within a very compact volumetric footprint. This article describes the key working features of this new technology and provides data from recent pilot-scale tests conducted in gold and copper-sulfide applications"

Water is a critical commodity of our generation and a key compound for the chemical and mining industries. Sustainable industrial development is directly associated with the ability to recover clean water from contaminated sources. Forward Osmosis (FO) is a low-energy footprint membrane process allowing the recovery of clean water from high salinity effluent streams. In FO, water is recovered spontaneously into a concentrated draw solution (CDS). Energy is required to separate the recovered water from the resulting dilute draw solution (DDS). In the current work, the fundamentals of the FO process and the most important aspects affecting its performance are discussed. An energy comparison of FO and conventional water recovery technologies is presented. Finally, the opportunities FO presents in the field of hydrometallurgy are analyzed.

MANY improvements have been made in recent years in the milling of industrial minerals and it is the purpose of this paper to review some of the more important innovations that are now being used in the preparation of these products. Some of the observations which will be made have been prompted by what was seen on a recent trip to industrial mineral milling plants in the north and central sections of the eastern United States. The flotation plants visited were those of the Valley Forge Cement Company at West Conshohocken, Pa., the International Agricultural Corporation at Mount Pleasant, Tenn., and the Aluminum Ore Company at Rosiclare, Ill. Besides these, sand plants in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, coal-cleaning plants in Pennsylvania, pyrophyllite, mica, feldspar, clay, and kyanite plants in North Carolina, and a zinc mill and the Tennessee Valley Authority ceramic laboratory in Tennessee were visited. The milling of industrial minerals can be considered under three broad headings, namely, crushing, grinding, and purification. Usually there is both a separation and grinding problem in treating an industrial mineral, but the problems are distinct, although sometimes a separation is made while grinding, as in the case of a Raymond throw-out mill, which grinds and at the same time throws out most of any hard material present in its feed.

Falcon centrifugal gravity separation tests were conducted to study desulfurization and de-ashing performance with different size fractions of a high-sulfur Chinese -0.5mm fine coal in a dense medium. Performance indicators such as combustible recovery, ash and sulfur rejection, and desulfurization efficiency were used to evaluate the separation efficiency. The results show that for -0.5 mm coal particles, all performance indicators except ash rejection are higher for the Falcon concentrator than for flotation. More specifically, for the +0.125 mm size fraction, Falcon centrifugal separation produced better ash and sulfur rejection performance than froth flotation. However, the Falcon concentrator also showed higher combustible recovery but lower ash and sulfur rejection than froth flotation for the -0.125 mm size fraction.

The purity of rectorite is only about 70% after preliminary mineral processing, which has limited its application. In this research, different pulp densities, different dispersants, different dispersing methods and purification flow sheets were used to purify rectorite. The results show that it is possible to obtain high pure rectorite clay with the purity above 90% and concentrate yield between 24.9% and 29.4% by the purification process with composite dispersants, stirred mill grinding dispersion and so on. The obtained high pure rectorite can be further used in rectorite nanocomposites.

A comprehensive flotation study has been carried out on a Chinese fluorspar ore using the packed flotation column developed at Michigan Technological University. The results are compared with that of a conventional mechanical flotation method on the same feedstocks. Key factors controlling flotation performance of both methods are evaluated based upon a simple statistic design. The flotation concentrate produced in one stage of the packed column has 4-S% higher recovery and much lower silica impurity content than that produced by up to six stages when a conventional mechanical cell is used. The results also show that the packed column flotation process is particularly suitable for recovery of finer fluorspar particles.

The Waihi Gold Mine is situated in a high rainfall area (annual average of over 2 m) on the North Island of New Zealand. Water treatment and discharge at the mine has been ongoing for the last 25 years. The first water treatment plant consisted of a æstandardÆ water treatment facility (ferric chloride precipitation) and cyanide detoxification. With time the project has expanded and the volumes of water increased requiring additional treatment methods (reverse osmosis) to meet the water quality for discharge. In this study, Ca-bentonite was subjected to a series of systematic hydrocyclone tests with the aim of developing separation procedures and in turn achieving optimum recoveries. In hydrocyclone tests, vortex and apex diameters and also feed pressures were investigated. In each hydrocyclone set, vortex diameter was kept constant while the other two parameters varied to produce bentonites con-centrates of various smectite contents. The separation efficiencies were evaluated based on the cation exchange capacity (CEC), particle size and swelling index. The detailed hydrocyclone tests showed that, upgrading of Ca-bentonites require procedures different from the bentonites reported in the literature. Sodium and mixed bentonites are easy- to-disperse and easy-to-separate whereas calcium types need to be scrubbed rigorously for disintegration. Scrubbing properties of ca-bentonite were investigated as a function of scrubbing time and percent solids by weight (PS). The scrubbing conditions at 700 rpm for 1.5 hours and percent solids of 30 % were found more effective for achieving a better quality bentonite. In addition to the parameters mentioned above, the effect of percent solids on hydrocyclone separation was also studied. Although Ca-bentonites permit studying at higher percent solids, increasing solids content of the pulp deteriorated the quality of the clean products. Application of an appropriate separation scheme enabled the development of a unique separation procedure involving stage wise scrubbing followed by hydrocycloning which yielded calcium bentonite concentrates with CEC of 90 meq/100 g and high swelling indexes of 12 mL from the original bentonite of 65 meq/100 g and 7.0 mL, respectively. These results indicate that upgraded bentonite products can be conveniently used in various diverse industrial applications including bleaching earth, desiccant, cat litter, paper etc.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch flotation tests and continuous pilot plant flotation tests on a complex calcareous fluorspar ore from Cave-in-Rock, Ill., to determine the technical feasibility of producing commercial-grade concentrates by the sodium fluoride-calcium lignin sulfonate-fatty acid method of concentrating fluorspar previously developed by the Bureau. The continuous flotation tests, treating about 150 pounds of ore per hour, produced fluorspar concentrates assaying 96.4 percent CaF2; 90 percent of the fluorspar was recovered.

Mineralogical and image analysis studies have been performed on four volcanogenic base metal ores that contain 0.01 to 4.5 wt% Pb to determine the behaviour of galena during mineral processing. The galena in these ores is fine grained and is poorly liberated in both the primacy and regrind mill discharges. Consequently, low grade Pb concentrates are produced to obtain relatively high Pb recoveries. The Pb concentrates contain many impurities including high amounts of pyrite and sphalerite, and small amount of CU-, As-, Ag-, Bi-, and Se-sulfides. These impurities need to be rejected from the Pb bullion during smelting. The galena commonly contains up to 1 wt% Ag in solid solution with an average of 600 to 1460 ppu for the deposits studied to date. The Ag in galena accounts for up to 65% of the Ag in some ores.

"FLEX 31 is a chemically enhanced sodium isopropyl xanthate that has shown improved collection properties over SIPX for copper-bearing and copper-activated minerals. Characteristics such as improvement of recoveries with lower dosages and high pyrite and pyrrhotite rejection capabilities have all been exhibited by FLEX 31.The most improved results have been seen insphalerite flotation. Plant trial work carried out in the zinc circuit at the Louvicourt Concentratorin northern Quebec has produced data showing superior grade and recoveries from rougher concentrates that previously had not been attain-able with other reagents effectively. The improvement over SIPX adds up to an almost$1,000,000 annual improvement on the mine’s bottom line at present zinc prices.IntroductionSodium Isopropyl Xanthate (SIPX) is one of the most popular flotation chemicals on the market today. Somewhat more specific than amyl xanthates, SIPX is used in a variety of ores like copper/zinc, lead/zinc, arsenopyrite/pyrite, and many others (Melis et al., 1991). An investigation carried out by Tennants Research Technology Applications (TRTA), a division of Charles Tennant & Co. (Canada) Ltd., produced a chemically enhanced SIPX that has shown all the advantages of normal SIPX along with improved recoveries of copper and copper activated minerals. The new product has been named FLEX 31. Currently, FLEX 31 is manufactured at the Prospec Chemicals, another division of Charles Tennant & Co. (Canada) Ltd.A large amount of laboratory testing pro-grams have been carried out with FLEX 31 todate (MacPhail and Cousins, 1995; Cousins and MacPhail, 1996). One of the minerals that has a defnite affinity to improved fotation is sphalerite (ZnS). Once activated with copper sulphate, sphalerite has produced some of the most spectacular test work when FLEX 31 is compared directly to SIPX. Plant trials of FLEX31 at Aur Louvicourt Inc. carried out in 1995show that FLEX 31 is far superior to SIPX for activated sphalerite flotation."

(2) Conveyors in the mill section of the concentrator plant. (3) Conveyors handling concentrate from the filter plant to the bedding plant, and from this plant to the smelter. (4) Conveyors handling flux and custom ore in the smelter crushing plant and to the bin at the bedding plant.

The implementation of the Gas Treatment Plant (GTP) for CSPECEM, Ceara-Brazil is a result of the closed partnership between Paul Wurth Italia S.p.A. and DMT, the German leading company in Coke Oven Gas Treatment Plants. In addition to technical issues reducing emissions, avoiding of waste and saving environment and energy were technical challenges during the engineering phase. Below mentioned three descriptions of technical solutions represents examples of a number other innovations based on DMT’s know-how and experience in the field of by-product plants. Generally the design of the complete GTP is based on the consideration of modern features and design upgrading, with the aim of a safe operation with stable conditions and a long-living cycle of the whole of the plant.

VV Mineral (VVM) group of companies is the largest and the first private producer and exporter of beach sand mineral products in India. During 2010, the company produced and marketed around 750 000 tons of saleable products. Their operations are mainly in the state of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, India. Almost all the wet pre-concentration plants use sea water as the concentration medium, since there is no fresh water source available near the deposits. The mines are located along the south-east coast of India in the states of Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh. The orebody varies in terms of mineral assemblage, slime content, grain size, and surface coating resulting in different behaviour of the minerals. Three different deposits containing ilmenite of different TiO2 content were studied. The study shows that there is no significant impact of using sea water for wet concentration prior to high tension separation of ilmenite. There is no significant variation in recovery and purity of ilmenite produced from these deposits when wet concentration of the deposits were carried out with sea water as the concentration medium and whether the concentrates were washed with fresh water or not before dry separation using High Tension Roll Separators (HTRS).

Three aspects of gas deliverability are presented in this paper. The first treats with the gas deliverability or availability of a normal depletion-type dry gas field. Such encompasses not only the period of stabilized constant rate, but more so, the "tailings" when a fixed abandonment pressure is reached and the rate by necessity must decline. A comprehensive work plot is offered, developed from mathematics herein included, that removes the triai-and-errnr computations that attended such undertakings in the past. The second part treats with the discount factor of the open flow potential constant from what is observed initially in testing a gas well to what is evidenced when stabilization is reached. This prevails in tight formations, such as the Kansas Hugoton field which is offered as the example. The means of establishing this factor are pressure build-up curves which, as sustained by analytical deductions, reproduce this entire period of transient flow under conditions of a constant rate influx. Finally, what is offered in this paper is the deliverability performance of an exceedingly rich gas condensate field producing from a tight formation. The example shown is the Knox Bromide field in Oklahoma, producing from the Bromide formations. The results are ominous, showing early reduction in permeability to gas pow, due to the retrograde condensate forming in the pore space, with the attending early logging-up of these wells. The analytics of lowered permeability are incorporated in the gas deliverability formula along with the PVT data that gives the increased condensate liquid saturation as the gas flows to the well bore. This paper would not be complete without a critique oflered at the end. With the many gas wells now in production and those that have completed their life, there has been no factual information collected by any source as to what constitutes that permeability range where a gas well would be unimpaired in its gas deliverability by the presence of rich condensate content, and the lowered range where such would be harmful. This question confronts all producers. INTRODUCTION Various aspects of gas deliverability are presented in this paper that includes depletion-type reservoirs, deteriora- tion factor of the gas deliverability constant, and the performance of a rich gas condensate reservoir producing from a tight sand. With respect to the presentation of gas deliverability and its tailings for depletion-type gas reservoirs, one notes that this is essentially the information offered by every gas transmission company and producer appearing before the Federal Power Commission for Letters of Conveyance in the dedication of reserves. In the ordinary procedure, as many engage upon this study, trial-and-error calculations are included, particularly as apply to the tailings. For many years one of the writers has employed mathematical analyses to perform this step and avoid the complexities so associated. In the preparation of this paper these analyses have been amplified to include any slope n for the open flow potential relationship for which the tailings can be determined from Fig. 1. With reference to the deterioration or discount factor of the open flow potential constant as such occurs in the gas deliverability formula, this for the most part has been an unexplored subject. Although the issue first appeared in the Kansas Hugoton field, where such was surmised but only recently resolved, this situation of a deterioration of the gas deliverability constant can occur wherever dry gas production from a tight sand is encountered. The first concerted attacks upon this problem were the presentations of Hurst' and Goodson' before the Kansas Corporation Commission to show that transient fluid flow and unsteady-state flow formulas prevailed. This was amplified later before the Federal Power Commission3 to show that this deterioration factor could be identified from pressure build-up curves. This has been reported by McMahon.4 Its importance to the industry merits the review of these essential features in completing the program on the aspects of gas deliverability. Finally, as illustrated here, for a low permeability formation such as the Knox Bromide field where the gas is rich, representing some 165 bbl of condensate per MMcf of effluent gas, the gas deliverability can be of limited extent in the life of the field, leaving substantial amounts of condensate and gas unrecovered. In cases such as this, gas cycling is mandatory. This is particularly revealed by the fluid mechanics introduced here, employing factual field as well as laboratory data, to show this-restriction upon gas deliverability. Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and heavy mineral ores (Wills, 1992). Gravity concentration remains the main separation method for fine iron ore and is used extensively for treating many minerals. Gravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid such as water or air (Wills, 2006).The main operating variables for a spiral concentrator are the feed rate, the slurry concentration, the wash water addition and the position of the splitters used to separate the tailings, middlings and concentrate streams (Sadeghi, Bazin and Renaud, 2014). Wash water is an important control variable used to wash away entrapped light minerals from the concentrate stream (Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Sadeghi et al concluded the spiral operation to be sensitive to the wash water flow addition and resultant economic trade-off. Increasing the wash water flow rate increases the concentrate grade at the expense of the iron recovery.The paper addresses the effects of dripping wash water onto the concentrate stream of a spiral processing fine iron ore. The dripping wash water system offers a low flow alternative and could possibly provide a good balance between grade and recovery of valuable minerals without using excessive water. The Multotec SC20HC/7 WW spiral was used for the experimental test work. The spiral was tested at varying solids concentrations; the wash water rate and the splitter positions were kept constant.The use of wash water at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration improved the Fe grade in the concentrate by about 1.5 per cent, six per cent and eight per cent respectively. The additional SiO2 rejected by the wash water is approximately three per cent, nine per cent, and 11 per cent at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration respectively. Addition of wash water is shown to have minimum effect on grade at 30 per cent solid concentration, and Fe upgrades obtained with and without wash water were found to be similar. Notable upgrades were observed at 35 and 40 per cent solid concentration with wash water. The results obtained suggest that the additional SiO2 rejection by wash water increases with an increase in solid concentration. This suggests that the benefit of using the drip system is notable at higher solid concentration. It is believed that at lower solid concentration SiO2 particles are reasonably free to move around and are possibly less entrapped than at high solid concentration.The Fe grade/recovery and solid concentration relationship with wash water showed a non-linear correlation. The Fe grade increases with an increase in solid concentration up to a somewhat optimum point and then drops as solid concentration increases further. The recovery of Fe on the other hand follows a converse relationship with solid concentration, the recovery decreases from 30 per cent to 35 per cent solid concentration and then increases again at 40 per cent solid concentration. The increase in recovery at higher solid concentration could possibly be explained by the fact that the mass yield to concentrate also increases with solid concentration. Since recovery is a function of both grade and mass yield, the higher recovery at 40 per cent solid concentration is likely due to the high mass yield obtainable at 40 per cent solid concentration.The drip system could therefore possibly offer a safe guarding against grade and solid concentration variations without using excessive water, and possibly ensure that a product within specification is maintained.CITATION:Ramotsabi, C M, Erasmus, W and Bornman, F, 2015. The SMCO copper plant is located in DR Congo, and was designed by China NERIN Engineering Co., Ltd. The process is a typical hydrometallurgical plant with Leach-SX-EW, with the project treating the oxide minerals with agitation leaching, followed with three stage of solvent extraction and two stages of stripping, and using permanent SS cathodes to produce LME grade copper. Because of the special characteristic of the ore, what contains 2 different type of oxides (one high carbonate oxide and the other low carbonate), there are several new technical measures that have been developed and adopted for the plant. For example, different grinding, leaching, and filtering are used to treat different oxides. This paper, presents the project process, engineering design, construction and commissioning. The paper also describes some of the problems encountered during plant commissioning, such as the agitation leaching tank issues, and corrosion in the settler-mixer. This paper discusses some NERIN solutions to these problems, and explains the use of the CN filter, which is used to filter PLS to treat high level suspend solids, instead of the traditional sand filter. Finally, this paper also proposes steps / measures for further improvement for future plant operation.

A mathematical model is derived in dimensionless form which simulates the effluent concentration response of reagents from spent heaps under both fresh and recycled water rinsing. The model is based on dispersion from isochoric pathways distributed in length and cross-section, oriented normal to convection channels in ideal plug flow. The effects of heap height, rinsate flow, and initial reagent concentration are examined. It is shown that the rinsing cycle undergoes a distinct shift between fast and slow rinsing at a certain time depending on the amount of stagnant solution in the heap, and the distribution of dispersion pathways. Results of preliminary column rinsing tests on both agglomerated and unagglomerated ores are presented which partially validate the model.

The Red Dog Operation is located in northwestern Alaska at Latitude 68°, 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The orebody was acquired by the NANA Regional Corporation, (an Alaska Native Corporation established by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971), in 1980 in their land selection. In 1982 Cominco American and the NANA Corporation signed a development agreement and Cominco Alaska Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco American, was formed to manage the Red Dog Project. An extensive exploration program in 1980 -1982 outlined a mineral inventory of 85 million tons, at a grade of 5.2% Pb, 17.1 % Zn, and 2.4 oz/ton Ag, which makes the Red Dog the second largest deposit ever discovered. Broken Hill, in Australia, is the only zinc orebody which was originally larger than Red Dog. The design of the facilities is to process 2.1 million tons of ore annually, which will produce 560,000 tons of zinc concentrate, 100,000 tons of lead concentrate and 50,000 tons of bulk lead/zinc concentrate.

The Henderson mine site is located at Red Mountain on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. The mill site is on the west slope of the Rockies and mine and mill will be connected by an underground railroad. All designs were for a 30,000 ton per day molybdenite processing plant with provisions for future expansion up to 50,000 ton per day if required. This plan did not just happen, but slowly evolved over the course of about three and one-half years. Many plants cannot afford such a delay, but the Henderson project will take about 10 years from the time it was first discovered until production starts, and these 3 !1 years were well spent in determining the best possible plant site and flowsheet. This paper describes some of the problems and the decisions made in arriving at the final location and flowsheet. The paper does not go into the specific details of how protection of the environment went hand-in-hand with all other project considerations. This particular aspect of the planning has been well-reported on other occasions and considerable information on it is readily available.
