"Ores enriched in critical rare earth elements (CREE) keep on being of particular interest. The CREE are Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy, including Y. In conjunction with beneficiation tests on Y-mineral bearing flotation tailings of complicated mineralogy, the Mineral Liberation Analyses (MLA) was used to work out processing characteristics fraction-wise in terms of modal mineralogy, mineral recovery, locking and liberation, and particle size.Size fractions from mechanical sieving (“real fractions”) as well as fractions created virtually by using filters on the MLA-data of the unsieved head material (“virtual fractions”) were investigated comparatively thereby. The ""virtual-sizing-approach"" features a much simpler sample preparation procedure and considerably lower cost if a fraction-wise investigation of a head sample is needed. It can be conveniently applied to intimately locked ores needing a fine grinding to a particle size distribution (PSD) range below 25 microns for instance. However, its practical use is sometimes disputed in terms of the reliability of the results. Results are shown for the main Y-bearing mineral xenotime and selected main gangue minerals of a low grade REE-ore.The influence of sample representativeness, sample preparation and particle counting statistics turned out to be of crucial importance. Given that all preconditions for reliable results are met, locking characteristics, modal mineralogy, and even PSD trends can be read from virtual fractions.The authors encourage processing engineers to use the virtual approach. They propose practical measures to improve the reliability of the MLA results, identify and tackle conflicting results, and mitigate evaluation problems that may arise."

The limited effectiveness of the original hot water process for recovery of bitumen from certain Utah tar sands containing bitumen of higher viscosity (e.g. Sunnyside, Tar Sand Triangle)1,2 indicated that bitumen viscosity strongly' influences the separation efficiency. In this regard, there should exist a critical value of bitumen viscosity above which the effectiveness of the hot water process decreases significantly. Apparently certain tar sands contain bitumen of such high viscosity that even a digestion temperature of nearly 100°C is insufficient to lower the viscosity below the critical value. In addition it seems that differences in physico-chemical forces which act between sand and bitumen are negligible in comparison to the difference in visco-mechanical forces. Predominantly mechanical forces hold viscous bitumen on the rough surface and in the pores of sand particles, resulting in strong adhesion. This phenomenon is a critical feature in the phase disengagment of oil-wetted domestic tar sands with viscosity control by temperature. Besides increasing the temperature for viscosity control the effectiveness of the original hot water process could be enhanced by control of bitumen viscosity with diluent additions. Strictly speaking this appraoch is the only possibility for heavy bitumen for which the high temperature of digestion does not lower the viscosity sufficiently. As a result of viscosity control by diluent addition the digestion temperature can be lowered which is important from an industrial standpoint. Another important consideration is that effective phase disengagement occurs only when the entire bitumen phase has the same viscosity. This means that some time (penetration time) is necessary for complete and uniform dilution of the bitumen. If the viscosity of bitumen, which is a function of temperature, diluent addition and penetration time, controls the separation efficiency, hot water processing of many different kinds of tar sands should be possible, assuming that the sand phase consists primarily of quartz-type minerals.

A high-B.t.u, gas can be synthesized by the catalytic methanation of a mixture of 2.5 to 3 parts of hydrogen to 1 part of carbon monoxide, obtained in the gasification of coal, using a steel catalyst followed by Raney nickel in a hot-gas-recycle system. Conversion of 99 percent of the H2+CO yields a fuel gas with a heating value of 983 to 1130 B.t.u. per cubic foot containing 78 to 96 percent methane, no carbon monoxide, and very small amounts of unsaturated hydrocarbons. With the steel catalyst alone, conversions were 85 to 90 percent, giving a fuel gas of 810 to 868 B.t.u, per cubic foot, or 847 to 975 B.t.u. on a C02-free basis. INTRODUCTION In 1948 the U.S, marketed production of natural gas was 5.15 trillion cubic feet; by 1958 it had reached 11.0 trillion cubic feet, a rate of growth of 8 percent annually. 4 5 Although demand is expected to increase less rapidly, by 1966 it may reach 16 trillion cubic feet, based on an estimated 4.7 percent annual increase.6

Eleven major pyrometallurgical processes and operations suggested for recovering manganese from domestic resources are described. These include seven pyrometallurgical processes that usually yield a ferroalloy or a product from which ferromanganese can be produced in one operation. The remaining four involve pyrometallurgical operations whose products require either an additional two-stage process to produce ferromanganese or chemical processing to recover a high-quality manganese oxide product.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the separation of heavy rare-earth elements (REE) in an ion-exchange process. An ion-exchange column consisting of two sections, a loading section and a separation section, provides high levels of REE loading and good REE separation with an expected processing cycle of less than a month, while current ion-exchange technology requires more than 5 months. A different resin is used in each section: sulfonic resin in the loading section and iminodiacetic resin in the separation section. The separation section is further divided into two segments: the first conditioned with NH4 and the second with acid. Erbium is loaded onto both segments of the separation column as a retaining ion. Bands of mixed REB eluting between separated bands of pure REB were recycled directly to the column. Without mixed-band recycle, over 80% of the REE eluted from the column was separated into fractions with 99% purity of each element; with such recycle, the percentage of separated elements can be increased to around 90%.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated 191 composites from the central Mesabi Range, Minn., chiefly by reductive roasting and magnetic separation. After reductive roasting and magnetic separation at minus 325 mesh, 28 composites produced concentrates that contained an average of 66.0 percent iron with less than 10 percent silica. Recovery of contained iron was over 90 percent. Natural magnetic material in excess of 5 percent was present in 142 composites. Trial flotation tests were used to evaluate three samples unresponsive to reductive roasting and magnetic separation procedures, and satisfactory concentrates having low silica contents (averaging 6.6 percent) were achieved.

Sherritt Gordon and Cominco, with financial assistance from the Canadian Government through PAIT, have developed a hydrometallurgical process for refining copper from sulphide concentrates. The main objective of the project was to develop a process applicable to a wide range of concentrates with respect to copper content, other metals content and impurities, within the economic parameters set by present smelting and refining practice. Other important objectives were to recover sulphur in its elemental form and not as sulphur dioxide to assure improved hygienic conditions and a negligible impact on the environment. For the most abundant and relatively refractory chalcopyrite concentrates, the first step of the process is thermal activation with hydrogen to decompose chalcopyrite and pyrite, commonly associated with it, into more reactive sulphides more amenable to leaching. The iron is then selectively extracted by sulphuric acid leaching and subsequently rejected as jarosite. High-bornite concentrates do not require thermal activation and acid leaching; they are subjected to another hydrometallurgical iron removal step. The high-grade copper sulphide resulting from iron removal, and containing all of the initial precious metals, is then leached under oxygen pressure to produce elemental sulphur and copper sulphate solution . After suitable solution purification, the copper is recovered by high-current-density electrowinning as wire-grade product. Precious metals remain in the leach residue and are recovered after separation of the gangue materials and elemental sulphur. The laboratory and pre-piloting test work had indicated copper and precious metals recoveries comparable to those achieved in current practice. The process was shown to be suitable for handling relatively low-grade concentrates and, in addition, it was capable of high recoveries of associated zinc, molybdenum, nickel and cobalt in saleable form.

The Bureau of Mines has devised and demonstrated a process for recovering Ni and Co from low-grade domestic laterites. The process consists of four major steps: (1) reduction roast, (2) ammoniacal leach, (3) solvent extraction, and (4) electrowinning. Several solid-liquid separation steps are required that affect the economics of the overall pro-cess. In this study, two techniques for solid-liquid separation, centrifugation and thickening, were investigated. This report presents the results of (1) laboratory and pilot plant studies to determine parameters for sizing centrifuges and thickeners and (2) an economic study of the two techniques, based on the requirements of a commercial-size (5,OOO-tpd) laterite processing plant. Sizing and other equipment-related recommendations, based on data from the Bureau's studies, were obtained from commercial manufacturers. The costs of thickening and centrifugation, including all the unit operations affected, were determined by the Bureau's process evaluation group. The total operating costs ~or separation using the two techniques (including depreciation on the capital cost of equipment) were found to be quite close: $17.26 per ton of laterite for centrifugation and $18.15 per ton of laterite for thickening. For centrifugal separation, the greatest cost was found to be the initial capital cost for the separation equipment; using thickeners, the greatest cost was for re-agent recovery.

We ought not look back unless it is to de- rive from past errors, and for the purpose of profiting by dear bought experience. - George Washington During the mid 1960's, the application of automation was introduced to Climax by two process control companies. In 1969 Climax decided to seriously consider improved control of selected areas of their milling process after preliminary research had been completed on two rougher ball mill grinding circuits. In 1971 the Climax Mill Department developed a direct digital control scheme for rougher milling, designed a remote control center for handling process water, planned to automate the central steam heating facility for energy conservation, and convert other plant areas to automation. All twenty rougher grinding mills and the industrial water system were automated by 1977. The idea of automating central heating and other areas was abandoned although some fuel conservation items were installed at the heating plant. During this period from 1971 to 1978, the mill capacity was expanded from 39,000 metric tons per day to 43,000 metric tons per day and cyclone classification was introduced to rougher milling. Ore quality changes degraded the milling recovery from over 90% to less than 85%. This report describes the procedure the mill used in developing the automatic process and the occurances that affected the timing and fina1 control logic. The report deals primarily with the automation of the ball mill grinding, classification and flotation process as this was the bulk of the seven-year project.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating surfactants added to water sprays to enhance the control of dust during coal mining operations. The objective of the present work was to establish the general applicability of adding sulfate ion to anionic surfactant solutions in order to improve wetting action. This was pursued through laboratory wettability testing of four anionic surfactants and one nonionic surfactant in combination with various concentrations of sulfate ion. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of sulfate ion enhanced the wetting characteristics of all the anionic surfactants when applied to hard-to-wet coals, while easy-to-wet coal showed more complex wetting behavior. Sulfate ion in the presence of nonionic surfactant enhanced wetting only slightly or not at all. Surface tension measurements of the dilute aqueous surfactant-sulfate anion solutions indicated this property was not important in coal-wetting phenomena, as long as the value was below the critical value for coal. Sulfate ion helps surfactant reduce surface tension but primarily appears to affect wetting action by altering the adsorption characteristics of surfactant on the coal surface.

The tungsten potentialities of the Combination mine were examined by a mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines in 1947. A report based upon his personal knowledge of the mine and the results of the examination contained recommendations for further investigation. This report presents factual data from Bureau of Mines field investigations begun in August 1947 and continued until December 1948, except for a 5-month recess during the first winter. The Combinat.ion mining property of 52 patented claims and 15 patented mill sites is in the Black Pine mining district, Granite County, Mont., 11 miles northwest of Philipsburg. The altitude in the mine vicinity is approximately 6,500 feet.

(Spokane Meeting, September, 1909.) DURING. the summer of 1905 I was employed by the U. S. Geological Survey to investigate the geology, Mining, and preparation of barite in most. of the fields of the United States. The Eastern districts have been more or less completely described ; the Virginia field in detail by Thomas L. Watson, in his paper, Geology of the Virginia Barite-Deposits,' and other fields in abstract., including statistics of production and references to current literature, by various authors .2 There have also been published a few details of the occurrence of barite in the lead-mines of Washington county, Mo.3 The other accounts of this district are erroneous and meager, and since this field is the most important one in the United States at the present time, a detailed description of the local geology seems doubly desirable. Barite-deposits are scattered over nearly the whole of Washington and adjoining counties, but. the product, is all mined from the areas indicated upon the sketch-map, Fig. 1, and is shipped from the stations of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain &. Southern railway, between Blackwell and Potosi, from 45 to 60 miles SW. of St.. Louis. The topography is for the most part gently rolling, with slightly graded streams, usually less than 200 ft. below the higher hill-tops. Samples of clays , shales , and argillites from 21 locations were subjected to preliminary bench- scale tests for bloating properties , and several samples were tested for ceramic properties . Samples showing favorable bloating properties were further tested in a pilot - plant - scale rotary kiln . Physical characteristics and concrete -making properties of the bloated products were determined . The Decorah shale from one area made a suitable material for a lightweight aggregate ; however , the limestone layers in the formation must be eliminated or the resulting activated lime must be controlled by quenching .

The case study of a highland area in the Central Andes of Peru, where many abandoned polymetallic mines are found, is presented. Some of these mines generate metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) or have potentially ARD generating (PAG) tailings/waste rock storage. Effluents are discharged into the first of two lakes in line, which act as reservoirs for irrigating an important valley in the desert coastal region. Drainage fees, their relationship with the deposit and the solid-wastes mineralogy are discussed, as well as variations in water and sediments composition, the benthos, and the aquatic/riparian flora/fauna in these lakes.

The optimisation of a metallurgical plant requires two kinds of sampling systems. The first provides samples to follow process changes, so in due time actions to maintain key parameters within pre-established specifications can be applied. The second provides composite samples at the end of a working shift to demonstrate that valuable constituents sent to the plant went to either a final concentrate or to the tailings in a logical, expected proportion. Contrary to what many experts may claim, these two kinds of sampling requirements are incompatible and cannot be fulfilled using the same sampling systems; this is because the required samples have completely different objectives. A process control sample is an instantaneous sample with increments taken at short intervals, and the objective is to know where the process is at any given time. Excellent accuracy is not a must, however good precision is recommended since a possible process correction may need to be made. Online analysers fed with in-stream stationary cutters or other kinds of in-stream or by-stream probes can do well for such a mission. A composite sample for metallurgical accounting with increments collected over a long period of time, for which excellent accuracy and good precision are both required, must be generated by sophisticated and extremely well-maintained cross-stream sampling stations. The use of process control sampling systems to achieve good metallurgical accounting has been promoted by several manufacturers of sampling equipment around the world; it is a grave mistake that is misleading top management and a practice that should be scrutinised and preferably eliminated. Furthermore, bias tests used to prove otherwise are often based on insufficient data to draw valid conclusions; a guideline is provided.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2014. "Arsenic released from the lithosphere by mining and metallurgical activities is a growing global environmental concern. Dundee sustainable technologies (“DST”) has developed a processing technology to sequester arsenic by means of vitrification. This method can effectively sequester arsenic trioxide without the need to oxidize from As (III) to As (V). Arsenic oxide is incorporated within a silica glass matrix that is stable as per the Toxicity Leaching Characteristic Procedure (“TCLP”) or EPA Method 1311. In this paper, the conventional treatment of arsenopyrite, commonly referred to as “two-stage roasting”, is discussed along with the options traditionally available for the remediation of the arsenic trioxide by-product. The drawbacks limiting the adoption of this processing flowsheet are discussed and a new processing route is presented for the treatment of arsenopyrite. This new flowsheet outputs an auriferous aluminosilicate highly amenable to gold extraction (> 96%) while eliminating the sulfur dioxide production associated with the second-stage roasting of pyrrhotite and ultimately uses vitrification as a definitive sequestration solution to arsenic trioxide.INTRODUCTION Faced with the depletion of conventional gold ores, the gold industry has witnessed a trend towards the exploitation of arsenical deposits. Arsenic is a naturally occurring metalloid often found in mineralogical association with gold. Many northern Canadian regions, from the Northwest Territories to Northern Manitoba, Northern Ontario and the Abitibi region are facing significant arsenic challenges. Projects are deemed uneconomic or prevented from going into operations due to the costs associated with handling arsenic material and there are penalties imposed to complex concentrates by smelters. In addition, Canadian mining operations have left an environmental legacy of gold tailings with grades typically of up to 9 grams per tonne with no processing solution as they also contain significant arsenic contamination at grades of up to 20%. Table 1 presents a list of Canadian deposits known to contain arsenic."

"In the present study, the recovery of rare earth elements (REE) in the nitrophosphate process of fertilizer production is investigated. The apatite has been recovered from iron ore tailings by flotation. After digestion of apatite in concentrated nitric acid, Ca(NO3)2.4H2O is first separated by cooling crystallization and then the REEs are recovered by precipitation. Optimum conditions in these steps have been determined in a previous study. The precipitate mainly consists of CaHPO4.2H2O and REE phosphates.In the present study, selective dissolution and re-precipitation have been studied in order to obtain a precipitate that is more concentrated in REEs. The precipitate was selectively dissolved in nitric and phosphoric acid at different acidities (pH 6 to 0) with the liquid /solid ratio of 100 mL/g. It is shown that most of the CaHPO4.2H2O and other calcium containing compounds will be dissolved at pH 2 while the REE phosphates are not dissolved above a pH of approximately 2. Thus, by partial dissolution of the REE precipitate at pH 2.5 most of the solid calcium phosphates will be dissolved and the remaining solid phase, which is more concentrated in REEs, can be filtered off as a fairly concentrated REE solid mass and the liquor can be recycled back to recover more P nutrients. Alternatively, the REE enriched precipitate was dissolved completely in nitric acid and re-precipitated again by addition of ammonium hydroxide to pH 1.2. A chemical equilibrium software, MEDUSA (Puigdomenech, 2013) has been used to evaluate the experimental results and to estimate the optimum conditions for selectively dissolving the precipitate."

Following a failure of a tailings pond darn at a mine in Andalusia, Spain, a huge effluent stream, that contained about 1 g/1 Zn and significant amounts of ferrous, ferric, calcium, copper, aluminium and manganese cations has to be treated, to prevent pollution of a nature reserve. EGMASA, as the regional government environmental agency, suggested to improve the current depuration process by recovery of the Zn from the effluent. A solvent extraction (SX) followed by electrowinning (EW) was proposed and developed to remove zinc.. A pre-treatment stage consisting in bio-oxidation of ferrous iron by using a bacterial process followed by an alkaline precipitation was employed because iron in the effluent is incompatible with both the SX and the EW processes. The SX process was developed successfully at the laboratory scale and verified in a pilot plant on-site, using two Bateman Pulsed Columns for extraction and stripping of zinc. The results were satisfactory obtaining a recovery of 90% of Zn. The process was suitable for industrial application.
