"Important for thickening processes is the ability of slurries to form under certain conditions aggregation and sedimentation stable systems. Substantial part of difficult to sediment solid particles in such systems may be in colloidal state. The technique to study the sedimentation and aggregative stability of the slurry developed by the author with co-authors makes possible to define kinetics of changes in the aggregative stability of the system with solid phase varying concentration in it and produce data on sedimentation stability of the system in preliminary investigation of the thickening process. Research of aggregative and sedimentation stability of the slurry complement standard methods of laboratory studies to prevent errors in development of water-slime thickening balance and water circulation to design new and upgrade existing processing plants. Statistical analysis of process audits of more than one hundred upgraded and newly commissioned processing plants carried out in recent fifteen years showed that more than two-thirds of problems arising in commissioning the processing plants are associated with misdesign and errors in thickening and water circulation system. Among the main reasons of process design failures are: non-conformity of actual characteristics of the raw material to design characteristics, low quality of preliminary studies at the stage of sedimentation process simulation, design failures, wrongly selected equipment for the thickening and water circulations systems. As of today a number of problems associated with laboratory studies of sedimentation process, first of all, with interpretation of precipitation curves produced at the stage of laboratory refinement of the thickening process have been pinpointed. Despite the limited demand for rare-earth elements, as well as yttrium and scandium, in conventional applications, the emergence of ne~ high-technology applications such as supermagnets, lasers and superconductors is expected to result in significant demand for some of these elements. This paper examines the anticipated applications and demands for rare-earth elements over the next decade and their implications on the utilization of available resources. Process methods for the recovery of rare-earth elements from conventional and unconventional resources are reviewed in the context of their growing demand. Challenges facing the industries in meeting this opportunity are also discussed.

Graphite in the Suffern deposits near Hillburn, N. Y., consists of flakes ranging in size from fines to one-half inch in diameter. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Suffern deposits in the spring of 1943. Gneiss outcrops were examined, and five trenches excavated and sampled. The graphite is not confined to any definite zone but occurs in small, local pockets. Eleven samples were collected and combined for laboratory tests. Tests by the Bureau of Mines indicate that the graphite ore can be beneficiated by stage crushing, "skin flotation" of coarse flakes, and wet flotation of minus 10-mesh flakes. Over 90, percent of the graphite was recovered.

ALL live producers and manufacturers of metals and alloys are investigating new uses for their products. The tin and tin-plate industry is no exception. One-third of all the new tin mined and refined is consumed in making tin plate. Several billions of cans are each year made from tin plate for the preservation of nearly 200 kinds of food. There are more than 500 tin-plate mills or individual stacks in the United States, which country makes more tin plate than all other countries combined and exports large quantities. As much as 1,800,000 tons of till plate has been made in a year in this country, and 28.000 tons of tin has been used in this period for this purpose. In sonic years a third of the till is so consumed; in 1933 it was half of the supply.

THE ARGONAUT' mill stands at the crest and spreads down the western slope' of a hill, which incidentally covers the' outcrop of the Argonaut vein' at this point. The collar of the main shaft of the mine is situated on the eastern slope of the same hill 120 ft. below the highest ?point. The present mill, built in 1916, was designed to treat 250 tons per 24-hr. day. This capacity has not been attained recently owing to the inability of the mine to produce enough ore while extensive development and underground construction were under way. At present, however, the mine is more than able to take care of the mill requirements.

THE world-wide continuation of low prices for zinc in 1934 has militated against any striking changes in the position of the metal. The price of zinc in London at the end of the year, about £11 5/8 per long ton, or 2.5c per pound at the existing rate of exchange, is more than 25 per cent below the average price for last year. In these circumstances probably the most significant event of the year was the putting into operation of the new electrolytic plant of the Giesches company at Magdeburg, Germany. This plant is designed to have an initial capacity of 20,000 long tons per year, and it is planned to increase this to 40,000 tons annually. This development is significant not only as indicating a continued swing of zinc metallurgy towards electrolytic methods, but also because it will make Germany virtually independent of foreign sources of zinc. This will mean that the zinc tonnage normally exported to Germany from Belgium and Poland will. become available for other markets, and it is feared may lead to lower prices unless the production of Bel-

A ventilation research study was conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a cooperating longwall trona mine in the Green River basin of Wyoming in the United States. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air and exchanges between the face and worked-out areas to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. Tracer gas experiments using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6  ) were conducted to describe air movement on the face and in the mined portion of the active panel. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of gases emitted from the face and caved gob.

Unplanned dilution directly adds cost to production from mining, milling, tailings disposal and administration. Additionally, unplanned dilution decreases the productivity, profitability and may affect the planned life of mine. Identifying and quantifying the potential for unplanned dilution allows optimisation of the mining plan and mining practices to minimise the adverse impact on productivity and the cost of production. The Dilution Rating System (DRS) has been developed to more accurately predict dilution thickness and the variable potential for dilution, from individual stopes to life of mine planning. The DRS utilises the methodology developed for the Mining Rock Mass Model (Seymour et al 2007, Jenkins et al 2009) to generate a three-dimensional dilution rating model, which is then calibrated against stoping performance. Dilution can be predicted more accurately and the parameters affecting dilution can be determined and minimised through improved mining techniques, for example blasting and ground support design. Potential high dilution areas can be identified in the planning stages of the mine and systems put in place to mitigate the risk of excessive dilution. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the DRS and then successfully predict dilution for both the hangingwall and footwall of stopes at the Gara Gold Mine. This has enabled the expected dilution to be more accurately predicted and mitigated where possible thus reducing unplanned dilution.

"The effects of adjusting technology on the phosphorous enrichment in converter slag were investigated. The results showed that the grain size of 2CaO·SiO2 with high phosphorus containing content increased slightly with the decreasing of cooling rate, and the proper cooling rate was confirmed to be about l.0°C.min-1. Moreover, the morphology of the phosphorus-rich phase of 2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O 5 was changed from granular for the higher basicity of converter slag to the coexistence of granular shape and rod-like for the lower basicity of adjusted slag. With the addition of adjusting agent such as SiO2 to lower the basicity of converter slag, the phosphorus in converter slag could be transferred into 2CaO·Si02 phase effectively, and P2O 5 content in high phosphorus containing phase reached to above 30%.IntroductionThe yield of converter slag is very large in China, but most of the slag is stacked usually after the separation of iron, which not only takes up a lot of land, but also affects the ecological environment seriously. Therefore, improving the comprehensive utilization and value-added products of converter slag is of great significance to recycle the steelmaking slag[l-3]. On the other hand, the refining of hot metal with high phosphorous content is an unavoidable problem with the decreasing of high grade iron ore, and as a result, more amounts of high phosphorus containing steelmaking slag are produced. However, the current recycle of converter slag is more focused on the emission reduction and reuse of steelmaking slag inside the iron and steelmaking process without considering the recycle of phosphorous resources[4-6]. At the same time, the development and utilization of phosphate ore as a strategic resource is drawing more and more attention, but the phosphate ore in China is mostly low grade and significant amounts of tailings are produced which is harmful to the environment. Therefore, it is important to separate phosphorous resources in steelmaking slag which can be used as phosphate ore for fertilizer material[7-9].Literature studies showed that most of the phosphorus in steelmaking slag existing as 2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O 5 solid solution phase in 2CaO·SiO2 particle. The P2O 5 content in the phosphorus containing phase is very low due to the fact that the basicity of converter slag is usually high and the precipitated amounts of 2CaO·SiO2 particles during cooling are very large, resulting in the fact that the P2O 5 contents in 2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O 5 solid solution phase are much lower which is impossible to be used as phosphorous resources instead of phosphate ore. Thus, the enrichment of phosphorus in steelmaking slag is need[ 10-14]."

"Recent concerns over the availability of many mineral raw materials, and newly available technological developments, produced renewed interest in deep-sea mining. However, environmental concerns, with variable degrees of justification, are raising opposition to the concept. The forecast for the behavior of consumption versus availability of many raw materials, nearly all critical metals, arguably show that consumption will grow much faster than resource discovery onshore. Finding new sources of raw materials seems inescapable. The deep seafloor stands out as the only likely candidate.Sea Floor Mining and the EcosystemMarine mining has already started, decades ago, for diamonds, currently up to depths near 400m. Although the industry recognizes there is a footprint, it considers the footprint quite minor, because the area mined is small: in Namibia, where offshore diamond mining is now 70% of the country’s total, only 3% of the concession of 3,700 sq miles (9600km2) have been mined. As plans to mine deep-sea massive sulphide deposits and polymetallic nodules progress, the environmental concerns grow. "Discussion at MeetingDR. D. DERRY (Ventures Limited) referring to the diagram (Figure 15) which shows a transverse structure section across the Central Slocan area, asked what the assumed structure at depth was, remarking that dips are steeper and more uniform at depth and that the contortions with gently-dipping axial planes are at higher elevations. He wondered whether the section represented ,part of a very large fold with steeply-dipping axial plane.MR. J. D. LITTLE (Canadian Exploration, Limited) replied that E. B. Mayo (Kelowna Exploration Company) and others had considered that the entire section illustrated faces to the southwest and represents part of the lower limb of a great overturned •syncline which is concave toward the southwest.DR. R. DEWIT (Geological Survey) remarked that the photograph of a ripple mark (Figure 7) showed internal lamination conformable to the ripple mark and wondered if the structure was not due to slumping during consolidation, since the normal mode of formation of ripple mark would seem to preclude the possibility of such internal stratification.MR. LITTLE remarked that in his opinion such structures should not be depended upon alone with-out other confirmatory evidence of the direction of tops of beds."

Never known as a conference to shy away from its share of off-color jokes, the Colorado Mineral Processing Division?s Annual Meeting returned to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO April 26-28 for its 62nd edition, this one held under the theme ?Does size matter (is bigger always better).? With the predictable jokes sprinkled in here and there, and a few unpredictable ones as well, the three-day conference featured a healthy mix of talks about some of the latest technical developments in the field of mineral processing, as well as insightful looks at some new operations in the western United States. This year, the Colorado MPD also launched the Wagner Equipment Student Scholarship program.

Excessive heat exposure is among the health and safety hazards for mine workers. The nature of the underground climate makes it a convenient avenue for heat generation and accumulation from several heat sources, including autocompression, equipment and heat from strata. This study investigates the effects of clothing insulation and acclimation on the thermal comfort of mine workers exposed to heat in underground working environments. Several clothing ensembles were considered to analyze the effect of the thermal resistance of clothing on the workers’ thermal comfort. To investigate the impact of clothing insulation, the thermal comfort limit of an underground miner was calculated in the form of maximum allowable exposure time for an eight-hour shift.

"Tin ore from the southeast of Yunnan in China is a complex polymetallic low-grade ore. Because of the highly disseminated extent ore, cassiterite flotation was applied in industrial production instead of the low efficient gravitational separation. Benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) was widely used as a collector in cassiterite flotation, but the consumption of BHA was large. In this study, the influence of octanol in cassiterite flotation from the southeast of Yunnan using BHA as the collector was investigated. The results indicated that single octanol showed almost no flotation capability to cassiterite without BHA. However a small amount addition of octanol as the auxiliary collector can decrease the consumption of BHA significantly, while did not reduced the recovery of cassiterite obviously. Infrared spectra analysis indicated that the single octanol adsorbed on the surface of cassiterite was unsteady adsorption, and a new entity assembled of BHA and octanol in a well manner was able to adsorb on the surface of cassiterite steadily. The probable self-assembly structure model of BHA and octanol existing on the surface of cassiterite was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Cassiterite is the prime and economic mineral from which tin metal is extracted economically (Qin et al., 2011). The estimated tin metal resources in the world is about 4.9 million tonnes, about 30.5% of which is distributed in China (Mineral commodity summaries, 2013). Cassiterite has many characteristics such as including heavy, hard, and extremely brittle in nature. Hence cassiterite is preferentially concentrated by gravity separators. However, the influence of particle size on gravity concentration is obviously. The separation efficiency is very high for coarse particles while it drops down considerably for fine sizes. (Turner and Hallewell, 1993). Application of flotation and development of selective surfactants have made it possible to recover fine and ultrafine cassiterite from the gravity tailings. A substantial amount of research work on cassiterite flotation has been reported in the past years. The outcome of such research has helped to develop various collector reagents such as cupferron (Vivian, 1927), sodium dodecyl sulfate (Edwards and Ewers, 1951), sodium oleate (Collins et al., 1968), salicyaldehyde (Marabini, 1978), alkyl and aryl arsonic acids (Senior and Poling, 1986), alkyl and aryl phosphonic acids (Gruner and Bilsing, 1992), alkyl sulfosuccinamates (Khangaonkar and Kamarudin, 1994), and alkyl hydroxamates (Sreenivas and Padmanabhan, 2002)."

The mining industry is facing economic pressures to treat more challenging and lower grade ore types, as well as pressure relating to environmental impact and social license to operate. Preconcentration through bulk ore sorting has the potential to benefit all these areas by enabling mining operations to divert material of low economic value prior to processing, thereby achieving higher feed grades and recovery, while reducing the processing plant and tailings dam footprint and capital required throughout the life of mine. The effectiveness of bulk ore sorting depends on the heterogeneity of material at the measurement location, as well as the accuracy and precision of the measurement. An understanding of ore heterogeneity can be assessed using drill core data, which provides metre by metre elemental assays. This paper reviews such data and assesses the grade distributions over different scales, which suggests that sufficient heterogeneity exists at mining scales to allow the potential for bulk ore sorting. Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technology has proven to be a successful measurement technique within many industries, including mining. PGNAA was first developed in the early 1980’s for the measurement of the elemental composition of bulk materials on a conveyor belt. Today, Pulsed Fast Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) technology is also applied in elemental analysis of bulk materials and has some advantages for bulk ore sorting. In order to enable effective bulk ore sorting, however, a PGNAA/PFTNA analyser must be designed to provide a representative bulk ore analysis with the necessary accuracy and precision. Examples are presented to provide an understanding of the factors affecting PGNAA/PFTNA performance in relation to effective bulk ore sorting.

Papers presented at a U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) technology transfer seminar describe the causes of violent material failure in U.S. mines, measurement techniques for monitoring events that result in violent failure, and mitigation techniques for controlling failure. Specific factors contributing to violent failure are identified on the basis of geotechnical monitoring in 16 U.S. hard-rock and coal mines and on statistical analyses of 172 coal bump events. New monitoring and analysis techniques developed as tools for assessing violent failure; geotomographic methods that provide new capabilities for the study of material failure and stress changes over large areas; and seismic methods for determining source locations, calculating energy release, and determining source mechanisms are described. Fair correlations have been established among seismic parameters, elastic stresses, face support load, and violent events. USBM studies have identified the advantages using both yielding and stable pillars for coal bump control. A computer program has been developed as an aid for selecting room-and-pillar layouts. The practical aspects of implementing a destressing program is outlined for coal mines, while the importance of mine orientation and timely support installation in controlling buckling-type failure is identified for hard-rock mines.

At Pietrafitta, between Assisi and Perugia, ENEL (Italian National Electricity Authority) has for some time been managing a power-station operated with lignite, mined from an open mine on the way to exhaustion. A new plant is under construction which is located in the mine that was filled with tailings, mainly clays, sandy silts, lignite and ashes produced by the power-station. The soil profile is shown in Fig. 1: the thickness of the made ground is around 27 m. The foundation of the new power-station is on 320 t piles, 1.20 m diameter, embedded in the cohesive base formation at a depth of 57.5 m. 2,350 piles will be constructed for a total length of 125 km. It is therefore one of the largest pile sites at present in operation in Italy. [ ]

Kaolin clay is heavily used in the paper industry as a coating and a filler, however to attend the specifications required by the industry it has to be processed. Kaolin is also used as a filler and pigment in various materials, such as paint, plastic, rubber etc. Some crude kaolins as mined in Northern Brazil, contain colored impurities such as iron oxide and rutile/anatase. These minerals normally are stained by iron and as a result vary from yellow to dark brown in color. The kaolin beneficiation process used in that region consists mainly of degritting, fractionation by centrifuge, high gradient magnetic separation, bleaching with sodium dithionite, filtering and drying. In some kaolin clays from that region, titanium oxide mineral occurs in fine fraction, lower than 2 µm, and so making the industrial process more difficult. The conventional method of classification and bleaching with sodium dithionite, markedly improves kaolin brightness, but has little effect on anatase removal. In fact, the fine fractions resulting from centrifugation, in many cases contain more TiO2 minerals than the original whole clay or the coarse fraction. The present work is related to purification of Brasilian kaolin clay using selective flocculation for removing its colored impurities such as rutile and anatase. This study was conducted in bench scale and it consisted of: blunging, screening, conditioning and decantation. Overflow and underflow resulting from settling of the flocculated material were then dried and submitted to TiO2 and brightness analyses. Sodium polyacrylate and sodium silicate were added to kaolin clay suspension as dispersant and ammonium hydroxide was also added to adjust pH. After degritting, the minus 44 µm fraction was conditioned with hydroxamate surfactant and then polymers of different anionic charge were added. The influence of pH and type of polymer on efficiency of TiO2 removal, as well as kaolin mass recovery were studied. The results obtained in the present study are quite promising. It was possible to diminish TiO2 content and increase kaolin brightness (ISO) from 82 to 88%.

As knowledgeable men in the industry know, a mineral occurrence is found through prospecting but an ore deposit is "made" -made through, first, imaginative and effective exploration; thence through efficient engineering, sales and management. There are two main phases of exploration-reconnaissance and target investigation-each of which can be further divided into two additional stages (see accompanying table). The search for a new ore deposit within a known and geologically mapped mining district involves only the last two stages, whereas the search for a new orebody in a virgin geologic environment involves at least three stages and often the full sequence. Of course, some of the exploration stages may be bypassed depending on available results of previous mineral surveys and/or exploration by individuals, business concerns, and governments.
