"In many areas of Saskatchewan, known gravel deposits have been depleted or are diminishing rapidly; in other areas, particularly in the north, demands for all-weather highways and access roads are far exceeding the supply of gravel sources with which to surface them. These two problems have made conventional methods of air-photo and ground surveys insufficient for gravel location. In the first case, hauling costs on construction now warrant searching for buried deposits and for smaller, less obvious surficial deposits that may be closer to the project. In the second case, search and access conditions are so difficult and costly that the ratio of successes to failures must be kept very high. The Department of Highways has long been aware of the oncoming scarcity of quality gravel deposits and is continually investigating ways of forestalling it. One of these ways is the use of airborne geophysical methods that permit rapid coverage of large areas and that sense and discriminate between earth properties to a significant depth below ground surface. In 1967, the Department began an investigation of an airborne conductivity survey method called INPUT*, or ""Induced Pulse Transient'', leading to a trial in 1968 and data analysis in 1969. The results of this trial initiated• modifications to the technique to improve its sensitivity for mapping shallow deposits. Part way through this modification in 1970, a decision was made to change to an airborne resistivity survey method called EPHASE*. Trials with this technique were conducted and analysed in 1971. This paper is an explanation of the E-PHASE system and a summary of the results from one of three areas mapped in 1971."

The gross vehicle weight (GVW) of an ultra-class mining truck comprises the unsuspended weight below the struts plus the suspended empty vehicle weight, plus the payload. Theoretically, one third of the suspended total weight is supported by two front struts and two thirds by two rear struts. However, since the payload position is not fixed when placed in the truck body and varies from load to load, compounded by uneven haul road profiles, the truck structure experiences higher than normal stresses, which manifest in the reduction of the life of the truck via structural fatigue. The downstream effects are a decrease in production and increase in operational and maintenance costs. In order to control the dynamic forces causing the high stresses on the truck structure, both the haul road conditions and the load distribution in the truck body need to be investigated. The latter aspect is the prime focus of this paper. A field test has been conducted in an oil sands mine where the Caterpillar 797B trucks are loaded by a Bucyrus 495 shovel. The strut pressure readings are collected using the data-loggers on the trucks as well as the truck velocity associated with each reading. Rack, roll and pitch are the main key performance indicators (KPIs) that are calculated to study the adverse effect of an unbalanced payload and consequently the truck structure. Finally, the shovel bucket load passes within the truck body are simulated and a new method is suggested to improve the truck payload balance.

Bedded sulfide ores in Cambrian Chinese black shales typically contains at least 2% Ni, 4.5% Mo, 1% As and 0.2% Se. Thin laminae and replaced on colites from the ore contain intimate mixtures of fine-grained Ni-rich sulfides and jordisite complicating ore treatment. The ores contain abundant jordisite, vaesite, nickelian pyrite, and barite and lesser amounts of sphalerite, gersdorffite, millerite, tennantite, fluorite, chalcopyrite, and HgSe (probably tiemannite). At present only ores that are sufficiently rich (>4.5% Mo) for direct roasting are mined and treated to produce, ammonium molybdate. The ores contain Pt, Pd, and Au in amounts totaling up to -2.5 ppm, but these are not recovered.

Mining has evolved in recent years, taking steps forward in the way that the industry is considerate of the environment and the communities in which it operates. Technology plays a major role in that evolution. Osisko Mining?s Osisko Mine near Malartic, Quebec is developing a new way of doing business. One manager said, ?We are building the Osisko culture,? but the company is doing many things that could become industry changers. Much of the change is driven by mine ownership and management to offer a better workplace and better community relations. Mining equipment manufacturers are changing, too, by engineering products with more operator comfort, fuel economy, ease of maintenance and more cleanly designed machines. And for those drills working close to communities, smaller bore sizes and sound retention are just two changes for the better.

For many years the value of qualitative microscopic investigation has been recognized in both of the fields of pure and applied science. In particular, its aid has been invoked in the determination of rock specimens in thin section, and some at least of the interrelations of minerals present in any one section have been observed and, to a limited extent, applied for the solution of different problems. During the past decade this form of research has also been diverted to the determination of ore minerals in polished section, with some observation of their structural relations. Microscopic research of a quantitative character, on the other hand, while started nearly one hundred years ago, has found but a limited application in petrography and has scarcely been used at all in the more modern science of mineragraphy. This is very largely due to the methods employed, since most of them consumed too much time and were, in addition, too laborious to encourage many workers in their use. The details of procedure for these earlier methods will be found in another paper by the writer, and will be omitted from this discussion as being of small interest to practical mining men.

Low gold and silver leaching kinetics has been commonly observed in traditional gold-silver cyanidation process, especially in those heap-leaching operations. The reactivity and availability of oxidant was believed to be the critical limitation for gold and silver dissolution. The occurrence of silver sulfide such as acanthite (Ag2S) in the ore may also result in low overall silver extraction. Leaching of gold and silver sulfide in the ferricyanide-cyanide solution has been investigated through rotating disc tests and the assistant effect of ferricyanide on increasing the dissolution rate of gold and silver was noticed. The potential use of ferricyanide as an auxiliary oxidant in gold/silver cyanidation process was proposed based on the results of leaching of gold-silver ores.

"Considering the dominant role of fertilizers in global phosphate production, it is evident that with the ever increasing development in agriculture there will be a growing demand for phosphate beneficiation. With the rapid depletion of high quality reserves, investigations into more complex and lower grade ore bodies are required. The Minerals Processing Division at Mintek has been involved in process development and flowsheet design projects on phosphate resources since 2003. This paper will discuss the processes that Mintek has explored and employed to upgrade various phosphate ore bodies (>30% Phosphorous Pentoxide (P2O5)) in preparation for end user application. These are aimed at an improved understanding of ores in terms of their varying mineralogy and the development of appropriate process routes to meet product specification. OVERVIEW OF MINTEK Mintek is a state owned science council that undertakes R&D, consulting and sells products and services into the minerals beneficiation industry. Mintek has been in existence for 83 years with a current permanent staff complement of 750 of which 300 are professionals with a tertiary education. Being a non-profit organisation, the majority of funding comes from state grant and earmarked funding. All research is needs-driven exploring innovation through technology and process optimisation trends. Owing to a solid base of expertise, extensive laboratory and pilot facilities, and a historical database of knowledge, Mintek is well positioned and equipped to execute projects on a scoping, feasibility, prefeasibility and bankable level. USES OF PHOSPHATE Phosphate is the component in fertilizer essential for root and stem development in plants as well as rejuvenation of harshly depleted soil for which there is no agricultural substitute. Phosphate rock is essential for global food security with 87% used in the production of fertilizers. In agriculture as fertilizer, phosphate is one of the three primary plant nutrients in addition to nitrogen and potassium. In former times, it was simply crushed and used as is, but the crude form is now only used in organic farming. Normally it is chemically treated to make Single superphosphate (SSP), Triple superphosphate (TSP), or Mono-ammonium phosphates (MAP) and Di-ammonium phosphates (DAP), which has a higher concentration of phosphate and is more soluble, thus more suitable for plant absorption."

A major design problem for upper seam longwall gate roads that are to be constructed in a multi-seam environment is to predict the effects of stress field changes created by interaction. To quantify these effects, case study data were analyzed to develop empirical stress transfer relationships between seams for both longwall and room and pillar mining. Data analysis showed vertical movement and roof characterization in the upper seam to be controlling factors in damage prediction and, therefore, gate road planning and design. CMRR (Coal Mine Roof Rating) was correlated with the multi-seam roof characterization systems previously used. A WINDOWS-based software package named UGLY (Upperseam Gateroad Longwall Stability) was developed. Results from selected case studies were correlated with upper seam stress predictions.

The level of mineral exploration activity for platinum in recent years, especially in North America, has ranged widely. Exploration programs have been based on a variety of ore deposit models and deposit types. These range from the classic magmatic model for sulfide/oxide deposits and their associated placers, through hydrothennal models for bonanza-type deposits, to low-grade mineralization potentially amenable to lower cost bulk mining methods. The platinum-group element (PGE) distribution in these different deposit types is not well-known however, and PGE determination is fraught with analytical difficulties. To properly assess a prospect or to achieve effective recovery by mineral processing, it is important to determine the mineralogical distribution of the PGE.

A very simple cold-bend test was devised and tested for evaluating thermoplastic jackets used on mine-power-feeder cables. A test sample is bent into a semi-circle whose radius is equal to the minimum bend radius recommended by IPCEA and then cooled to the, desired test temperature (-35°C). While at temperature, the sample is straightened by pulling the cable ends with a winch arrangement. The results show that of the jackets tested, those which cannot withstand the test literally burst when the sample is straightened.

"For moisture samples, the International Standard for iron ore sampling states the following: Moisture samples shall be processed as soon as possible and test portions weighed immediately. If this is not possible, samples shall be stored in non-absorbent airtight containers with a minimum of free air space to minimise any change in moisture content, but should be prepared without delay. ISO 3082 (2009)Prescribing what to do is of course easy. Putting it in practice is, however, a little more problematic.The iron ore industry has seen quite some changes in the last ten to 15 years, such as: a large increase in the volume of seaborne trade new ore types and blends coming onto the market new mines, processing plants and port facilities producing more and loading faster an increase in wet processed ore products a dramatic rise and then equally dramatic fall in the iron ore price followed by a recent recovery.All of the above have had an effect on sampling facilities. The large increase in volume coupled with ambitions such as labour efficiency, safer operations and higher precision has driven the installation and retrofitting of automated sampling and robotic sampling preparation plants in order to keep up with increased quality control.Designers of sampling facilities are invariably instructed to build plants that comply with ISO 3082. In general this means that the plants are compliant in respect of the number of primary increments, gross sample masses and sample division rules. The clause at the beginning of this abstract is mostly overlooked as it only appears in a section (4.1) describing the basic requirements of a sampling system.An error of 0.1 per cent in moisture changes the value of 1 Mt of iron ore at US$50/t by US$50 000. At 700 Mt/a of Australian iron ore exports, this is US$35 M. Frequently, errors from 0.5 to 1 per cent in moisture measurements are encountered.In comparison an error of 0.1 per cent Fe is US$0.081 (US$50/t and 62 per cent Fe base) per tonne, that is US$81 000 per Mt or about US$51 M for the same Australian annual iron ore exports.It is somewhat mystifying that we in the ISO Technical committees spend extraordinary energy (= money and time) on improving measurement techniques, whilst the big costs are in sampling errors. This investigation addressed two products from Samarco?s desliming circuit, namely underflow of cleaning cyclones and underflow of desliming cyclones. The roughing cyclones receive the product of the grinding circuit. The underflow of the roughing cyclones feeds the cleaning cyclones and the overflow feeds the desliming cyclones. The underflows of cleaning and roughing cyclones are combined to constitute the feed of the flotation circuit. These fractions were characterized and a new process route was proposed. The size distributions of the two fractions are quite different. The desliming cyclones underflow presents higher amount of material passing 37 µm and of ultrafines as compared with the cleaning cyclones underflow. Laboratory scale flotation tests were performed in a mechanical machine aiming at comparing the performances of these products in the presence of the reagents employed in the concentrator. Pi-lot scale column flotation yielded enhanced iron recoveries for both products in comparison with those achieved in laboratory mechanical cells, without impairing the concentrate quality. The in-crease in recovery was more significant in the case of the cleaning cyclones underflow. These results suggest the use of columns in the flotation of this product aiming at increasing the overall iron recovery. Nevertheless the results also showed that the use of columns to float the cleaning cyclones underflow should also be taken into consideration. Despite the fact that this product requires a longer residence time in order that the required silica content in the concentrate is achieved, the indication is that higher levels of iron recoveries might be reached. The conclusion is that, due to the different behaviors of the two products, they should be processed in distinct circuits to maximize the iron recovery.

Mineralogical studies indicate the Pt-Pd-Bi-Te class to react poorly on the flotation stimuli and indications are that these minerals are slow floaters. However, recent studies performed on a number of minerals from this class indicated strong interactions with potassium ethyl xanthate resulting in the formation of dixanthogen (only one of several xanthate species). The poor flotation response is not a result of poor interaction of xanthate with the surface. It is proposed that the oxidation products of sulfides in the process water interact with the PGM surface. To test this, the effect of thiosulfate (an important oxidation product of sulfides) was investigated by employing electrochemical measurements and FTIR spectroscopy. The electrochemical investigations indicate no strong effect of thiosulfate on the interaction of xanthate with the minerals surface as well as the reduction of oxygenthiosulfate is likely not responsible for the poor flotation response of these minerals in industrial plants.

"IntroductionTHE KNOWLEDGE about the mineral resources in a region ranges from relatively precise ore-reserve estimates for known deposits to probabilistic estimates concerning the speculative resources which may be discovered in future at greater depths and in the less-explored parts of the region. Previously developed probabilistic methods for regional resource evaluation (1) are based on the following two assumptions.(1) The probability that a specific block of rock, or part of a region close to the topographic surface, contains undiscovered deposits can be estimate d by weighting selected geological, geophysical or geochemical parameters for that block. The weights are computed by considering similar environments which are known to contain deposits.(2) Some of the characteristics of the undiscovered deposits, such as ore tonnages and average grades of metals contained in the ore, can be evaluated by considering probability distributions f or known deposit data. These methods were initially applied to Precambrian deposits in the Abitibi Volcanic Belt of the Canadian Shield (1).Since 1972, statistical methods for quantitative resource evaluation have been applied to the occurrences of the mainly Paleozoic base metal deposits in t he Canadian Appalachian Region. The objectives of this project (Project Appalachia) have been discussed by Leech (2) in a paper that introduces 8 papers with results of the exploratory data analysis. Project Appalachia represents an effort to develop and apply methods of combining information and concepts from regional geology, metallogeny and geomathematics for computer- aided regional mineral resource evaluation."

Ferric iron removal from the nickel electrolyte at Glencore Nikkelverk AS in Kristiansand, Norway, is achieved by precipitation of iron hydroxide followed by filtration, and it is desirable to improve filtration properties of the precipitated iron hydroxide in order to decrease the filtration time. The effect of increasing the residence time from the current 45 min to 75 min and temperature from 65 °C to 90 °C on the filtration properties of the precipitated iron hydroxide (akaganéite) was studied by simulating the industrial process conditions in a continuous reactor setup operating at steady state, using ferrous-containing process solution as feed material. It was possible to decrease the filter cake resistance by both increasing residence time and temperature, but temperature gave the most pronounced effect and reduced the filter cake resistance by one order of magnitude.

"The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown Project builds a 19km LRT corridor that includes a 10km underground portion, between Keele Street and Laird Drive. The West Tunnel Contract (ECLC1-15) includes 6.5km of twin EPB TBM bored tunnels with a 5.75m internal diameter precast concrete segment lining (PCTL), between Keele Street and Yonge Street. This paper summarizes the overall scope of work, the technical challenges faced and innovative solutions developed by the contractor during the TBM move across an existing subway tunnel using state of the art high capacity strandjack gantry crane.1. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is Canada’s largest urban region, populated with over 6 million people, and is one of the most rapidly growing regions in North America. One forecast estimates that the population of this region will increase to 8.6 million by the year 2031. In September 2008, Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, launched a 25-year regional transportation plan named “The Big Move” to cope with the expected increase in transportation demand. The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown, one of the projects included in “The Big Move”, is a light rail transit (LRT) that will run across Toronto in an east-west direction between Mount Dennis and Kennedy along Eglinton Avenue. In October 2012, the West Tunnel Contract of the Crosstown LRT (ECLC1-15) was awarded to Crosstown Transit Constructors (CTC), a joint venture between Obayashi Canada Ltd., Kenny Construction Company, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. and Technicore Underground Inc. The project includes approximately 6.2 km long twin bored tunnels, 9 cross passages, 1 emergency exit building, 7 sets of station headwalls, and an intermediate pair of extraction and launch shafts. Each of 6.5 km long twin tunnels are divided by the existing subway station into two drives: the first half from the launch shaft LS-1 (west of Keele Station) to the extraction shaft ES-1 (west of Eglinton West Station), and the second half from the launch shaft LS-2 (east of Eglinton West Station) to Yonge Station, as shown in Figure-1. The TBMs are extracted at ES-1 and moved to LS-2 over the existing Yonge-University Subway Line at Eglinton West Station before resumption of tunneling at LS-2."

The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology (Le. stratification, turnover, and development of anoxic conditions with depth) of the lake. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline, or temperature stratification, in the upper 10m to 30 m of the water column. Two of the pit lakes (26 m and 55 m deep) undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper pit lakes (110 m and 240 m) undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

"The influences of citric acid (CA) on the flotation behavior of cassiterite using styrene phosphonic acid (SPA) as the collector were studied via single mineral flotation tests, contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations in this paper. The results of single mineral flotation tests revealed under the conditions that pH=4 and the dosage of SPA 100 mg/L, the recovery of cassiterite reached 76.78%. The addition of 20 mg/L AC decreased the recovery by 12.42% at pH=4. Contact angle measurements demonstrated the adsorption of CA prior to SPA made the cassiterite more hydrophilic. The results of zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations indicated the chemisorption of C6H7O7- and C6H6O72- filled parts of the Sn site on cassiterite surface and prevented the SPA from getting adsorbed. The hydrophilic effect of AC was stronger than the hydrophobic effect of SPA and the flotation of cassiterite was crippled. INTRODUCTION Tin is an important metal which is widely used in medical instruments, marine engineering materials, electronic and electrical devices, welding, weapon manufacturing and organotin compounds industries (Angadi et al., 2015). Cassiterite is the only mineral from which the tin can be extracted, thus it is of great importance to efficiently exploit the cassiterite mineral. Flotation is an indispensable method for the recovery of cassiterite (Li et al., 2015). However, cassiterite is usually in association with many other gangue minerals which are of similar floatability, such as quartz, calcite, fluorite, iron oxide, wolframite, scheelite and tourmaline (Sreevinas, 1997). So some modifiers are necessary in the cassiterite flotation process. The amounts of the modifiers used in the flotation must be judicious and the overmuch modifiers may cripple the recovery of cassiterite (Parsonage et al., 1987). Nevertheless, the research about the effects of the modifiers on the flotation behavior of cassiterite has been rarely reported. In this paper, the influences of citric acid (CA) on the flotation of cassiterite using styrene phosphonic acid (SPA) as the collector were investigated by flotation tests, contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and solution chemistry calculations."

"The high copper demand as well as the lack of new high-grade deposits, are pushing the copper industry to process low-grade and refractory ores containing chalcopyrite. However, for a quantitative dissolution of copper from the chalcopyrite, the leaching performances still need to be improved. In the present research, we studied and optimized the iodide-assisted leaching of chalcopyrite in H2SO4-Fe2(SO4)3 media. The evolution of surface species during leaching was determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). Inductively-coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the dissolved copper. Significance of experimental results was assessed by statistical analysis while a kinetic analysis of the leaching process was performed by fitting the experimental data with the Shrinking-core model. Results showed the significant positive effect of iodide on copper extraction rate. In the presence of KI, the dissolution rate of copper was almost double than in the parallel experiments without KI. Whether using KI or not, elemental sulfur was generated on the surface of the leached chalcopyrite. Nevertheless, in the presence of KI, the passivation layer did not arrest the leaching. Analysis revealed that the leaching rate was limited by the chemical reaction control step.INTRODUCTION Due to the large demand of copper, processing low-grade ores containing copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) has become unavoidable (Watling, 2013). Since ores with CuFeS2 may also contain appreciable amounts of arsenic that cannot be smelted, and because low-grade ores are uneconomic to smelt, the hydrometallurgical technologies are crucial for recovering the copper (Dutrizac, 1978). Sulfate-based processes are attractive because of the lower operating costs and because the sulfate ion is more suitable in case copper would be recovered via electrowinning. In ferric sulfate solution, chalcopyrite undergoes oxidation due to the large amount of Fe(III) and dissolution due to the presence of the sulfate ion (Majima, et al., 1985).
