Primary steel manufacturers using electric arc furnaces generate one of the largest hazardous waste streams nationwide. The waste stream, known as electric arc furnace dust, is a listed hazardous waste with the designation K061. Oregon Steel Mills, Inc., (OSM) of Portland, Oregon, has implemented a process known as Glassificationn, which uses KO61 as an ingredient in an onsite recycling process. Because OSM was able to demonstrate that the Glassificationm recycling process beneficially uses all toxic constituents in the electric arc furnace dust and that the recycling process produces marketable products, the process is not subject to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) permit requirements. The marketable products manufactured using Glassificationn include roofing granules, ceramic glazes and colorants, abrasive blasting media and, more recently, synthetic slag fluidizers. The purpose of this paper is to identify the regulatory issues for recycling hazardous waste and demonstrate that OSM glass frit is effective as a slag fluidizer in primary steel manufacturing.

"With the rapid development of iron and steel industry, the supply of iron ores can not meet the present demand for iron and steel industry in China. Large reserves of oolitic hematite have been discovered with low iron grade (30% ~ 45%) and high phosphorus content (0.4% ~ 1.8%). Traditional processes for utilization of this ore are characterized as either high cost or low dephosphorization. In this study, sodium salts-modified paigeite (SSMP) was added to enhance on the dephosphorization of high-phosphorus oolitic hematite by using reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation. Various parameters, including the amount of SSMP, reduction time,reduction temperature, grinding fineness and the magnetic field intensity were investigated. As a consequence, a magnetic concentrate of metallic iron powder with total iron grade of 93.2% and phosphorus content of 0.08% was obtained under the optimal conditions. The results also provide a potential avenue for the comprehensive utilization of paigeite ore.IntroductionOolitic hematite is currently recognized as one of the most refractory iron ore resources in the world. Over 4.0 billion tons of reserves of such resources have been found in China, and more than 10 billion tons in the long-term. This kind of ore is characterized as low iron grade (30%~45% TFe) and high phosphorus content (0.4%~1.8% P), as well as fine particle size distribution of ferrous minerals (the size distribution varies from 5~30 µm, even less than 2 µm) and the complex association between iron and other gangue elements [1~5]. The unique structural characteristics of the high phosphorus oolitic hematite make it difficult to obtain high iron recovery and good dephosphorization efficiency by using the conventional processes [1,2]. Traditional processes are characterized as high cost and low dephosphorization for oolitic hematite beneficiation [9~15]."

For most geologists and miners the term "asbestos" refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven, are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for? uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The United States Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile. amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as "asbestos" if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions; length -greater than 5 micrometers, maximum diameter -less than 5 micrometers, and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer causing agent) it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment.

Few issues pose quite as profound consequences to the quality of life and the creation and distribution of wealth as how we protect the natural environment. No longer a peripheral but a global concern, the environment, once almost nobody's business, has now become everybody's business. It is also the single biggest issue facing mining and mineral activities. This heightened ecological awareness and sensitivity have spawned a new commitment to restore, protect, and preserve nature. But that very commitment poses difficult socio-economic trade-offs, such as: What and how many resources can be given up to prevent and reduce pollution? What are the opportunity costs associated with meeting higher environmental standards? What problems are more important or pressing than others and should be given priority? Choices have to be made that may entail unintended consequences for other societal goals.

This report is a compilation of preliminary and, in some cases, more extensive concentration experiments by the Federal Bureau of Mines on low-and medium-grade fluorspar ores from three localities in Nevada and one in California. The work was done on samples obtained from Shoshone mine, Nye County, Valery mine, Pershing County, and the Broken Hills mine, Mineral County, all in Nevada, and Dirty Weather mine, Inyo County, Calif. These investigations were made to aid in the development of domestic fluorspar resources, in line with the Bureau's long-established program of conservation of mineral resources. The treatment methods employed in the experimental work described included simulated or "heavy-liquid" gravity concentration of coarse minerals and comparatively fine-grained minerals, and flotation concentration of finely-ground minerals. These methods were attempted in order to beneficiate the ores and produce concentrates which could be marketed readily, with as high a recovery rate as possible, while using simple treatment methods suitable for small-scale operation.

"Recently, in order to extract metals, the industry is trying to process old metallurgical slag. The material requires very fine grinding that results in enhanced slime-formation. This in turn leads to problems in the course of the flotation process and to a loss of metal. In addition, it causes difficulties in the wastewater treatment aimed at water reuse. The aggregation and separation of the fine particles and their further subjecting to mineral processing would result in more efficient use of raw materials. Closing the water cycle also would be facilitated. The paper presents results from studying sixteen flocculation reagents, commercially available for treating municipal wastewater, including products based on nanotechnology, for their ability to rend the production wastewater in suitable for reuse in the flotation. It turned out that, from all studied reagents, the cationic C-587 is suitable for the purpose. Some of reagents were studied for their ability to flocculate selectively, in presence of coke fines, rich in copper fines which are produced at grinding of a slag from lead-zinc metallurgy. Most promising reagents are chosen, based on the chemical analysis of the flocculated materials. Open-cycle rough copper flotation experiments with the flocculated fines and recycled wastewater gave encouraging results."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated new methods for increasing the selectivity in flotation by creating and regulating reagent concentration gradients within flotation columns at steady-state operation. Gradients were generated and traced in a water-only system with the use of fluorescent dyes, and the effects of various operating parameters on these gradients were investigated. From this investigation, it was found that both gradual and steep gradients could be generated in the froth cleaning zone, and that these gradients could be changed through the manipulation of both physical and chemical operating parameters. The application of reagent-gradient control to mineral systems could improve both flotation grade and recovery in commercial flotation operations without the use of additional flotation circuitry.

An improved method and apparatus for determining the impurities in helium by preconcentration and subsequent analysis by mass spectrometry are described. Preconcentration of the impurities is accomplished by passing a known volume of helium, at slightly above atmospheric pressure, through a metal coil and trap assembly immersed in liquid helium. The concentrated impurities are then analyzed by mass spectrometry. This method can detect impurities in the range of 0.01 to 600 ppm with an accuracy of better than ±0.05 ppm at the 1-ppm level. One operator can analyze 15 samples in an 8-hour day.

India ranks fourth in the world of iron ore production and exported 55% of the total iron ore production of 180.9 million tons in 2006-07. As per United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), the total iron ore reserves in India is 25249 mt. This consists of about 14630 mt of Hematite ore and 10619 mt of Magnetite ore. While the deposits of magnetite iron ore are limited to the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, hematite ore is available in abundance in Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Goa. National Steel Policy, declared by government of India in 2005 envisages 110 million tons of steel production by 2020. This is likely to be revised upwards. Massive exploration work in iron ore is needed to convert the available resources of iron ore into reserve category. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) produced more than 24.5 million tons of iron ore during 2006-07 and plans to produce 42.0 million tons per year by the year 2010-11 to meet the requirement for a hot metal production of 26.2 million tons. While processing iron ore, the challenge faced would be the reduction of the gangue materials ? alumina and silica. It is proposed to bring down alumina and silica in the iron ore to less than 2% each from the current level of 2.5%~3.5% each. Appropriate beneficiation schemes are being developed depending upon the mineralogical characteristics of iron ores at different mines in the country. The state-of-art beneficiation technologies like Hydro-cyclone, jigging, magnetic separation etc. will be incorporated. SAIL?s corporate plan envisages blast furnace burden of 15% iron ore lumps, 15% pellets and 70% sinter by 2010. This strategy opens up the opportunity of utilization of micro fines generated in the mining and beneficiation processes for pellet making. This also directs towards all together new technological approach to the beneficiation process. SAIL is planning to set-up three pelletisation plants of 2~3 mtpa capacity. Environmental issues like reduction in slime loss and utilization of dumped low-grade iron ore are very important. R&D Centre for Iron and Steel, SAIL has carried out extensive laboratory investigations in the above area. This will help in reducing the loss of valuable iron through slimes and also increase the iron ore resource base. Laboratory investigations indicate that low grade dumped ore fines with Fe: 55.5% can be upgraded to a product with Fe: 66.2% with about 48% recovery.

En Sudáfrica se elaboró un modelo de volatilización del gas HCN el cual necesita ser validado en lugares con diferentes superficies y concentraciones de cianuro libre (Nadia Lotter 2005). Actualmente, no existe en sector una data confiable de cuanto gas cianhídrico se emite al medio ambiente. Como un aporte a la ciencia, innovación y tecnología, este estudio se desarrolla con un medidor de gases de HCN y se calcula el error que se tiene por este método y se compara con la metodología tradicional de análisis químico, todo esto en el área de mayor control que tiene la planta en una operación aurífera y cuyos equipos son verificados electrónicamente para ver qué tan eficiente es este método.

Meerschaum or sepiolite is employed principally in tobacco pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, although a few other uses of minor importance are Down. The unique value of a meerschaum pipe is derived from the owner's pleasure in watching the color deepen with smoking and in having the color "set" at the desired shade. The name "meerschaum" (German for "sea foam") is applied because the material, when pure and dry, will float on water. Owing to its resemblance to the porous, bonelike structure of the cuttlefish, or septa, it is also known as sepiolite. There are a few scattered deposits of meerschaum in. the United States which have yielded a small product ion, but the world's supply of the' material is obtained fined principally from Asia Minor, Meerschaum deposits near Eski-Shehir, Turkey, are said to have been worked 2,000 years ago, but commercial exploitation is a development of the last hundred years DESCRIPTION AND PROPERTIES Meerschaum is a hydrous magnesium silicate (H4Mg2Si3010) having the following theoretical analysis: Si02, 60.8 percent; MgO, 27.1 percent; H20, 12.1 percent. It is a soft. (H.2 - 2.5), fine-grained, earthy, white, gray, or yellow material. It is very light weight when pure (specific gravity, 1 to 2) and is highly absorbent. Because of its porosity the proportion of water present in the mineral is affected by the humidity'of the atmosphere. In a moist atmosphere the water content may be as much as 21.7 percent. Then wet the material is soft and somewhat plastic. When dried again it becomes lard and tough. The toughness is especially apparent in some forms that have a fibrous or leathery texture.

"This paper takes an in-depth look at the $72 million design-build Norris Cut project, which includes the replacement of an existing 54-inch waste water sewer main to Fisher Island under the Norris Cut Channel. Tunneling through one of the country’s most unpredictable geologies created unique challenges in both the design and construction phases of the project. The paper presents the geotechnical and structural design considerations for the 100-foot deep secant piled TBM launch shaft in the highly permeable Fort Thompson formation limestone and sands. The structural design effort also included the design of the tremie slab, thrust wall and design of the largely unreinforced launch shaft to resist asymmetric loading from partial ground freezing. The retrieval shaft was designed as a deep soil mixed shaft and is thought to be the deepest soil-mixed shaft in Miami. From a construction perspective, this paper discusses the unique challenges of building two shafts with two different techniques and will compare some of the constructability aspects, costs and equipment schedule-considerations related to the use of two separate techniques. INTRODUCTION Nicholson Construction Company (NCC) was awarded a $72.1 million Design-Build contract to replace an existing force main from the Virginia Key Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP) under the Norris Cut Channel to Fisher Island. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The project involves replacing an existing 54-inch diameter pre-stressed concrete sewer force main with a 60-inch diameter fiberglass force main. Arup USA, Inc. (Arup) is the lead designer for Nicholson on this design-build project. Arup is providing design services for the TBM launch and retrieval shafts, segmental tunnel lining, the fiberglass pipe, and the horizontal directional drill component. Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department currently owns and operates the existing 54-inch sanitary force main that transmits sewage collected from Miami Beach and Fisher Island to the CDWWTP for treatment and disposal. The existing force main was subject to a condition assessment in December 2011 which revealed structural deficiencies in the pre-stressed concrete pipeline."

"Test work was carried out using copper gold-bearing flotation concentrate with 6.85%Cu, 14.30%Fe, 20.70%S and 2.34%As. Gold and silver grade in the concentrate is 54.6 g/t and 92 g/t, respectively. Gold and copper are valuable components in the concentrate. Gold is partially associated with pyrite and fahlores. Copper in the concentrate can be found as tennantite (Cu12As4S13). The 71% of gold from the flotation concentrate is recoverable by cyanidation with simultaneous cyanide consumption in the amount of 96 kg/t. The major reason of refractoriness is that gold is fine encapsulated into sulfides and the presence of cyanicide-copper. The concentrate ground as much as 95% minus 10 µm was treated using low-temperature POX at the temperature of 100±5°C, L:S ratio of 5:1 and the process time of 1-5 hours. Residual sulfide sulfur in the cake is 2.28% which is 89% sulfide oxidation. The highest copper recovery to POX solution is 91%. It was found that gold recovery to cyanide solution is 85-94% during alkaline pre-treatment of POX cakes followed by cyanidation. In this case, cyanide and lime consumption is 75-90 kg/t and 120 kg/t, respectively. In order to recover precious metals from POX cakes leaching using sodium sulfite was carried out. Test work was conducted at varied reagent concentration, L:S ratio and leaching time. Gold and silver recovery achieved was 85-95% and 59-63%, respectively."

Introduction The subject of cathodic protection is not new. In 1824 Sir Humphry Davy, in publishing the results of his investigations for the British navy, pointed out that copper could be protected from sea-water corrosion by connecting it electrically with zinc or iron. Since that time much work has been clone in this field, particularly in the protection of metals from the action of sea water, neutral brines, and treated and untreated waters. Special mention should be made of the successful protection of underground pipe-lines which formerly were badly corroded by the water in the ground. So far, magnesium alloy and zinc anodes have been the most popular. However, fairly recent work has indicated that aluminium anodes will give good service under certain conditions. The principle of cathodic protection has been applied extensively in coating steel articles with zinc and in cladding aluminium alloy sheet with pure aluminium. A valuable discussion of the fundamentals and applications of cathodic protection recently was presented in the Corrosion Handbook. A useful list of references was included in the article.

Taking the longwall mining face area in a steeply dipping seam as the research object, the stability of an asymmetrical rock mass structure is analyzed using shell theory and masonry beam theory. The results show that an asymmetrical shell structure is formed at the top strata of the mining stope and its magnitude is mainly determined by the mechanical characteristic of the overburden strata of working face, mining space size and so on. Localized instability of the shell structure is the main factor that leads to the overall structural instability in the stope. The instability modes includes: the shell roof instability dominated by tensile failure, the shell shoulder instability initialized by compression-shear failure, and shell bases composite instability occurs in tensile and compression-shear modes. The shell structure stability dedicates rational strata control measures to choose, and the caving height of overburden strata is the key for shell structure instability.

Grinding and classification circuits at Climax Molybdenum Co. are described. Since the installation of a direct digital control computer in 1974, a number of control strategies were developed and evaluated. This paper deals in particular with the practical experience and results obtained in direct digital control of a wet grinding circuit consisting of a ball mill, constant speed sump pump, and hydrocyclones. For this circuit throughput is maximized, while maintaining a desired product size. Product size is inferred from measurement of operating variables.

Heavier rare earth, which is contained in a small amount in ores such as bastnesite and monazite, has been accumulated as a heavier rare earth residue without doing separation and purification due to the lack of suitable methods. The heavier rare earth residue includes seven rare earth elements such as Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Tm and Yb. Separation and recovery process of Dy, Y, Tm and Yb from leached solution of the heavier rare earth residue was investigated by using a column method with solvent impregnated resin. The solvent impregnated resin was prepared by impregnation of organophosphorous extractant whose trade name is PC-88A into a macro porous resin, Amberlite XAD-7. It was almost impossible to separate them in simple adosorption and elution steps. However, we attained to individually separate Dy, Y, Tm and Yb from the leached solution first by changing eluent concentration gradually from pH2 to 0.02kmol/m3 HC1 in the elution step, and secondly by using a development column and changing eluerit concentration in the elution step. The separation process flow was proposed for a heavier rare earth residue by using the solvent impregnated resin method.

The segregation process has been known for many years and applied industrially for the treatment of various refractory copper ores. The principles of the process are briefly reviewed; the process was tested in the laboratory on two copper-cobalt oxide ores from Gecamines, Shaba Province, Zaire. Various parameters of the process, such as segregation temperature, dosage of reducing and chloridizing agents and flotation conditions were inyestigated. Experimental results have shown that the segregation of copper could proceed satisfactorily at low temperature (1000° K) but that of cobalt required higher temperature and higher additions of reducing and chloridizing agents.

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. Le présent article définit une procédure d’essai en laboratoire qui utilise des études cinétiques de flottation pour vérifier l’effet de doses normales à extrêmes de produits chimiques antitartre et anti-poussière (5 à 100 g/t). Les résultats indiquent que ce protocole aide à prédire l’interférence potentielle d’un produit chimique particulier sur le circuit de flottation."
