"THE NOR-ACME gold mine is located close to the north shore of Snow Lake, at 54°53' north latitude and 100°03' west longitude. It is about 75 air miles east of Flin Flon, and 36 miles by road from Wekusko at Mile 81 from The Pas on the Hudson Bay Railway.The claims which contain the Nor-Acme orebodies were staked in 1927 by C. R. Parres, who, with his sons, held the ground until 1938 when Nor-Acme Mines Limited was incorporated. In 194 l, on the recommendation of F. Ebbutt (1), this property was optioned by the Howe Sound Exploration Company, Ltd. A program of 50,000 feet of diamond drilling resulted in the outlining of two orebodies containing an estimated 5,000,000 tons with an average grade of 0.15 ounces per ton to a depth of 1,000 feet.A period of inactivity during the war years was followed by the construction of a mining plant capable of treating 2,000 tons of ore per day. Milling started in March 1949, and to the end of 1954 has resulted in the production of 383,793 ounces of gold and 32,906 ounces of silver from 3,331,403 tons of ore.General GeologyThe general geology of the Snow Lake area is described by J. M. Harrison (2), and will not be discussed here except insofar as it affects the Nor-Acme orebodies. The orebodies occur in rocks of Precambrian age that have been classified by Harrison as the Snow group, comprising meta-morphosed sediments interbedded with acid and basic volcanic rocks. The volcanic rocks include pyroclastic types which are unique in the region, a fact which led to their classification in the Snow group rather than the more widespread Missi group that generally occupies the same stratigraphic position above the Amisk group (Figure 1)."

Overexposure to hazardous noise has been found in most mining sectors, with up to 100% of the surveyed workforce experiencing a noise dose over the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure level (PEL). As a result, miners show elevated rates of hearing impairment of 70-90% by retirement age. To help manage noise exposures, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software and implementation guide for use by mine management and safety personnel. The software relies on a time-motion study that profiles the worker?s daily activities. Observations about the worker?s location and tasks or other activities are recorded along with the start and end time, to determine the duration of the tasks, so they can later be matched up with the noise data. The software gives the user the option of assessing dose relative to the MSHA PEL, the Action Level or the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit. The software generates a variety of interactive onscreen displays showing where, when, and how the worker?s noise dose accumulated. It also can generate customizable printed reports. These outputs can be used to highlight the tasks, locations, and times that are associated with the greatest amount of the worker?s noise exposure. DOSES simplifies the record keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies and worker noise exposures, so mine management can make engineering noise control or administrative control decisions to limit the noise over-exposure of their workers.

Research at Cytec over the past two decades has shown that the traditional approach for ore metallurgical characterization (typically conducted via laboratory-scale batch flotation tests), which involves changing reagents and conditions one-factor-at-a-time, leads to several pitfalls. The chemical solution thus selected has a narrow un-optimized window of performance and will likely fail in the plant. A holistic approach, called the Flotation Matrix 100? process for ore metallurgical characterization, was developed at Cytec about a decade ago and has been successfully used to develop robust reagent solutions for several operations around the world. The premise for the approach is that flotation outcome from ores is variable and is determined by complex interactions between various physical, chemical and operational factors. A key component of the process is the use of efficient multivariate designs focused on the chemistry aspects (reagents and pulp chemistry), which helps identify the best processing conditions for each ore type, as well as the conditions resulting in poor performance. It also includes advanced statistical methods for dealing with the complexity and variability of experimental data. The holistic approach is illustrated in this paper with a case study on Pb/Zn ores. Using just 18 carefully designed batch tests, it is possible to partially simulate the behavior of each ore type in the plant. The best conditions for each ore type, along with the conditions to avoid, are identified. Along with this, insights are obtained into the reasons for high reagent dosages for certain ore types, and interactions between variables. Selection of delay times to optimize fragmentation has been a controversial topic among researchers and blasting practitioners. This paper interprets previous experimental information on the effect of delay on fragmentation with the aid of some new experimental observations of the time of detachment of the free face of the blast as well as results of numerical modelling. It was shown that detachment of the burden occurs at delays shorter than the one which produced optimum fragmentation in the experiments, suggesting some fragmentation improvement due to gas action. In addition, at the spacing to burden ratio of the experiments, the damage zone from an earlier detonating charge extends the distance to the neighboring charge, essentially affecting the burden of some of the holes of the blast, at detonation time. Computer modelling demonstrated that increased spacing results is less overlap of stress induced damage zones meaning that there is less influence of delay on stress wave induced fragmentation. It was also shown that simultaneous initiation results in less back break, while increased back break may result even with short delay times.

Rosebery Mine is situated on the west coast of Tasmania and is AustraliaÆs largest volcanic-hosted base and precious metals deposit (zinc, lead, copper, gold and silver). The milling operation has been producing zinc, lead and copper concentrates continuously for over 100 years. RoseberyÆs long life demonstrates the operation to be high grade, and high margin, capable of operating through several commodity price cycles. Paradoxically, throughout this long history the ælife-of-mineÆ as defined by proven and probable reserves has been short. Zinifex has demonstrated its commitment to discover the future of Rosebery with the growth project æProject HorizonsÆ. The aim of the project is to extend the life of mine beyond 2020, with an additional exploration expenditure of $19 million over three years. Despite the maturity of the deposit, early success has confirmed the potential with the discovery of new resources. Mine planning strategic studies are challenging established paradigms of mine production, throughput rates and metal cut-off grades. Discovering the optimal process rate for Rosebery, by examining the æHill of ValueÆ and underground mine optimisation is proving critical to the best exploitation of RoseberyÆs rich resources. The promise of finding a mine within a mine is being realised, with new lenses being delivered by exploration success and real grade/tonnage options optimised through dynamic mine planning. The future of Rosebery is co-dependent on these two areas of discovery. This ensures capital expenditure decisions are informed, to secure the next 20 years of wealth creation and beyond.

Researchers have long speculated regarding the adsorption state of collectors on mineral surfaces. Only recently have analytical techniques become available which allow direct in-situ analysis of adsorbed layers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IRJIRS) with reactive internal reflection elements allows for unobtrusive investigation of the adsorbed layer (Harrick, 1979). This technique has been used both for the in-situ identification of adsorbed species and for the direct calculation of collector adsorption density in real time from infrared spectral data (Miller and Kellar, 1988). The reactive mineral IRE serves both to internally reflect the infrared light and to act as a substrate at which collector adsorption can be monitored. Shown in Figure 1 is a schematic of light being internally reflected in an IRE. As the light is totally reflected at the interface, an evanescent wave propagates a short distance (typically a few microns) away from the IRE, and sampling of the interfacial region occurs. Because of multiple internal reflections, great sensitivity can be obtained. Flotation systems for which this method has been demonstrated include CaF2/oleate, Al2O3/ dodecyl sulfate, CaCO3/oleate, ZnS/xanthate, and KCl/octylamine (Miller and Kellar, 1988; Kellar et al., 1989, 1990; Miller et al., 1990).

This report describes aperiments by the Bureau of Mines and reviews theoretical aspects of the use of organophosphate solvent extraction for recovering beryllium from sulfate leach liquors. The leach liquors were prepared by sulfuric acid leaching of lime-sintered low-tenor beryl flotation concentrates. The experimental work on sulfate leach liquors showed that the acidic esters of organophosphates extracted beryllium slowly but in preference to aluminum. Three common alkylphosphoric acids, di- (2-ethylhexyl) (EHPA), heptadecyl (HDPA), and dodecyl (DDPA), in order of decrmsing selectivity, yielded a partial separation of beryllium from aluminum.

An experimental design has been developed to investigate the relative influence of distinct pulp and environmental properties on froth stability in the flotation of a typical porphyry copper ore. In particular, factors such as frother and collector type, feed particle size (P80), solids per cent, composition (chalcopyrite and pyrite content), as well as grinding environment (mild steel versus stainless steel, high and low pH) have been varied in a controlled manner, and the resulting froth stability evaluated. A previously developed froth stability column, based on the Bikerman approach, was used to measure the froth height and half-life in each test. The relative effect of each factor is presented here on a comparative basis. It is shown that frother type is the most important factor, with marked difference in froth stability when switching from methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) to glycol based frothers. Solids per cent and particle size also play a significant role. The grinding environment had lesser effect on the resulting froth stability, although mild steel grinding gave higher froth stability compared to stainless steel grinding. The experimental evidence supports the hypothesis that in porphyry copper flotation the grinding environment influences surfaces oxidation, pyrite activation and the extent of hydrophobic particles reporting to the froth phase. This has an indirect effect on the resulting froth stability, which is however small if compared to the other factors. This work is still in progress, and extension to other mineral systems is planned. A spectrographic procedure applicable to the semiquantitative determination of 29 elements in tungsten is presented. The method is designed to give estimates of impurity concentrations up to 500 p.p.m. Limits of detectability range from 0.3 p.p.m. for the more sensitive elements to 100 p.p.m. for the less sensitive ones. Tungsten metal samples varying in particle size from minus 300-to 30-mesh are excited in the presence of 5 percent germanium with a direct current arc. Germanium acts to stabilize the arc, minimizes the volatilization of tungsten, and serves as an efficient carrier to sweep impurities from the tungsten into the excitation zone. Curves are presented that show the volatilization behavior of germanium, tungsten, and impurities in tungsten at different concentration levels. Data obtained were used as guides in establishing the method of analysis. In the absence of established reliable analytical procedures for determining many impurities in tungsten in the parts per million concentration range, the spectrographic method described here should prove to be helpful in evaluating high-purity tungsten.

"Conventional mining operations can produce a wide range of wastes containing gold and other precious metals but which are less suitable for processing by traditional methods. There are also types of ore that do not fit easily into a traditional processing flowsheet, e.g. because the refractory nature of their minerology or the combination of valuable metals is less suitable for traditional processes. Nevertheless, these potential sources of valuable metals remain unexploited resources that have attracted growing interest in the metals and mining industries over recent years. The challenge is therefore to develop and use alternative processing methods that have the flexibility of operation to cope with a wide variety of material types and tonnages, whilst providing high recoveries for valuable metals. Tetronics’ DC plasma smelting technology achieves industry-leading recovery rates for precious metals from a wide range of input materials and initial precious metal concentrations, whilst generating an inert slag-based material as a by-product (even when starting from a hazardous waste input material), approved within the EU for use in construction applications. This paper describes how this technology can be used as a key part of an overall process for the recovery of precious metals from these interesting materials.INTRODUCTION The extraction of gold from its ores by various forms of cyanide leaching has been practised by the mining industry for over a century (Minerals Council of Australia, 2005) and it remains the primary extraction method in a wide range of mining operations. The ability of cyanide to extract gold efficiently and quickly from lower grade ores without extensive additional processing, coupled with well-known methods to recycle the cyanide for re-use within the process mean it is often both the most economically preferable and environmentally acceptable method for recovering gold. As a result, 88% of all gold produced from mines in the USA in 2014 was recovered via leaching of open heaps or dumps (UGGS, 2016). Nevertheless, there are occasions where certain combinations of mineralogy and other circumstances reduce the effectiveness of cyanidation techniques, so that ever more elaborate additional processing steps are required, with inevitable increases in operating costs (Swash, 1988). In these circumstances, which are likely to be more common in future as ore qualities diminish, other methods of extraction may offer better alternatives. Whilst much less commonly used for Au extraction at present, pyrometallurgical methods are amongst the longest-established of these alternative approaches and merit serious consideration in such cases."

Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) operates a metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracey, Canada. In the Ore Preparation Plant (OPP), ilmenite ore is roasted through four parallel rotary kilns generating 95% of the plant wide sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions. RTFT proactively set an annual emission cap for SO2 to be achieved by 2015. To achieve this targeted SO2 reductions, a technology evaluation and selection exercise was carried out, followed by detailed engineering and implementation. After a detailed evaluation of SO2 scrubbing technologies, the Circulating Dry Scrubber (CDS) system was selected as the most appropriate desulphurization system for this application. The system was implemented and commissioned from 2013 to 2015. General performance testing conducted in May 2015 demonstrated that the system achieved and surpassed the anticipated design values in terms of SO2 removal efficiency and hydrated lime utilisation. This paper summarizes the SO2 technology selection process, design features of the selected technology, project implementation and final performance testing of the SO2 abatement system.

"A fundamental component of the Hoek–Brown empirical rock failure criterion is assessing an appropriate mi constant. In developing their empirical criterion Hoek and Brown normalised triaxial test results by dividing the principal stresses at failure by the uniaxial compressive strength to provide mi values for typical rock types. Experience shows that Hoek triaxial tests for individual lithology types commonly have a large inherent scatter. In addition, tests are often conducted on core from random locations, which although being of one parent rock type, display variations in density as well as minor variations in grain size and alteration.This paper presents experience from projects the authors have been involved in which large sample populations of triaxial and UCS tests on similar rock types were available. Geophysical logging data was also available for some projects. The methods used to estimate the compressive strength for each sample and the effects on normalising the data sets are described. The variability of the data and uncertainties and assumptions involved in the process of assigning a mi value from the normalised data are also discussed."

The disposal of arsenic from copper operations possess various health, environmental and processing problems. There are basically two areas of concern. The first being the disposal or treatment of smelter flue dusts and the second the removal of arsenic from refinery electrolytes. A number of treatment options have been proposed including the addition of soluble arsenic wastes to copper heap and dump leaching solutions. This approach will allow arsenic to be reintroduced to the ore via Solvent Extraction (SX) raffinate associated with hydrometallurgical operations. Knowledge of the attenuation behavior and mechanism during leaching is important in determining the long term stability of arsenic and the success of this approach. Parameters, such as uptake capacity, pH, particle size and solution chemistry have been investigated. Arsenic attenuation has been examined using column leaching with experiments employing both continuous flow and pulsed additions of As(V). In the initial stages of leaching, the attenuation of arsenic appears to depend on the pH and iron concentration in the effluent. Arsenic stability in the copper oxide ore has been examined with rinses of progressively lower pH.

"CO2 reduction by alternative energy devices such as wind-power, electric vehicles utilize rare-earth elements (REE) in several forms; such as in piezo-electric devices, batteries and magnetic materials. In 2010, the 95% of Rare Earth supply is controlled by China, compared to USA being dominant supplier in the 1980s. The dependence upon a single source of lanthanides has prompted the utilization of lower grades of titaniferous mineral concentrates, which often have rich seams of REE. We propose a new methodology, which utilizes the low-grade minerals for the extraction of synthetic rutile and also significant quantities of REE. We demonstrate the alkali roasting of lower grades of mineral concentrates and subsequent leaching in an aqueous medium for preferential flocculation of REE during the extraction of synthetic rutile. Changes in mineral structure during alkali roasting and leaching determine flocculation of REE and permit their separation at the front end of unit process.The physical chemistry and crystal structure of minerals in equilibrium with alkali and aqueous medium play an important role, which we explain by demonstrating the changes in the crystal structure. The quantification of separation of RE oxide via chemical analysis suggests that it may be possible to separate rare-earth oxides between 50 and 80% of the initial concentration in the non-magnetic fractions of ilmenite, for example. The microstructural and X-ray diffraction analysis points out that the presence of alumina and roasting with potassium based alkali enhances the separation and flocculation of rare-earth elements at the front end of the process after roasting. The process allows the recovery of CO2 generated by recycling into the process for the regeneration of alkali."

A closed-loop hydrometallurgical process has been developed for treatment of smelter flue dust generated by copper recycling. The process is a semi-continuous operation in which zinc, iron, and copper are first extracted from the dust with a sulfuric acid solution. The lead and precious metals, initially present in the dust, remain as solids and can be recycled to the copper smelting furnace. Cementation with iron and zinc metal purifies the zinc and iron-rich liquid stream prior to spray drying. The spray-dried product, consisting of a mixture of zinc sulfate monohydrate and iron sulfate monohydrate, is a desirable micronutrient additive for use in animal feeds. Treatment of the smelter flue dust in this manner will generate a positive return on investment, as well as mitigate a potential environmental liability.

"The combined use of semiconductor properties and specific flotation characteristics of minerals under different conditions with external influences ensures a possibility for process control and management. This work presents the relations between the volumetric and surface characteristics of minerals and the minerals' flotation ability (flotability), as well as the possibility for the flotability purposeful change. Results from proprietary laboratory and industrial research are presented showing how controlled impacts on minerals and flotation pulp improve flotation technology. Such an approach reveals prospects for the creation of new technologies for the minerals' beneficiation.INTRODUCTIONThe decrease of the useful components content in the ores, the increasingly complex nature of the raw materials, the increasing energy consumption per the unit of production, and the need to solve the problems related to the environment pollution require solutions different than the existing classical ones. One of the ways to find such solutions is the detailed consideration of the fundamental properties of minerals and, in particular, of minerals having semiconductor properties. The studies of Plaksin et al. (1968), Chanturia and Shafeev (1977), Chanturia and Vigdergauz (2008), Carta et al. (1973), Hoberg and Shneider (1975), Rao et al. (1992) have given an idea of the energy state of the minerals, their flotation ability, and the ways in which this ability can be changed in one or the other direction. The main line in these works is the study and use of the relationship between bulk and flotation properties of minerals. To improve the efficiency of the process, it is also necessary to consider the relationship between the surface properties of the minerals, especially minerals-semiconductors, and their flotation ability.THEORETICAL BACKGROUND IN BRIEFA quantitative estimation of energy changes in a solid phase in the process of flotation may be made by taking in account the changes in the Fermi level. Its position in the forbidden band is an indicator about the direction and the intensity of electron exchange between solid and liquid phases. The Fermi level energy EF enables the estimation of flotability, intensity of needed external impact before flotation, as well as efficiency of the process going on. Quantitative estimation of these processes can be made by means of the flotability coefficient Kf."

U.S. supply and demand data for dry natural gas by source, form, and major consuming sectors--within and between States and defined regions--were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. State-by-State quantitative data are provided for the natural gas industry that can be arranged into regional groupings and used to determine regional flow patterns. The tables show the derivation of the total supply of gas available for consumption from total marketed production. The tables also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation, utilities). The summarized data show an increase in the absolute demand for natural gas in all regions for the period 1960-65, although the relative posit ions of the various subregions, with respect to national consumption, remained about the same. To enable comparison of data on dry natural gas with data on other energy sources, quantities in terms of million cubic feet were converted to British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents.

Introduction Tin continues to be as much a strategic metal as it was during the war. This situation is due to the fact that the tin mines in the major producing areas of Malaya and the Netherlands East Indies have not yet reached their pre-war production. Moreover, the world requirements for tin in certain fields, particularly in the food pack industries, are steadily increasing. At present, tin is still under International allocation by the Combined Tin Committee, of which Canada is a member nation. This Committee reviews periodically the availability of refined tin for export from the producing countries and makes allocations of tin to ensure equitable distribution to the consumer countries. In 1947, availability permitted an allocation of only 70 per cent of stated requirements. From 1935 to 1938 the price of tin in New York averaged 49 cents a pound and during the war the price in Canada was controlled under a subsidy programme at levels from 60 to 70 cents per pound. Just recently, this price has been raised to 96 cents. The value of the Canadian production amounts to about half a million dollars annually and the whole of this is obtained as a by-product of the lead-zinc-silver ores of the Sullivan mine in British Columbia. In 1947 Canada's imports of tin were 3,961 long tons valued at over $6,000,000. In addition, tin plate to a value of $8,000,000 was imported from the United States; the tin content of this is estimated to be from 650 to 700 long tons. An increase in domestic production would, therefore, be of great national importance, and the present high price may make the search for and development of tin deposits more attractive than it has been in the past. Although no one can foretell what future prices will be, there is reason to believe that, unless there is a drastic downward revision of production costs, the price will be maintained at present levels for some years. A number of tin occurrences are known in Canada, but none of these have been developed for their tin content alone.

As exploration for new mineral deposits advances farther into the Canadian North, the more the design engineer is faced with the problems of cold weather conditions. This is especially true when designing belt conveyor systems for open-pit operations where the temperature in the winter may go to -40°F or below. Problems with the mechanical components and also with the belting will arise, which in turn may reduce the availability of the system. This paper outlines the problems encountered during cold weather operation and what precautionary measures must be taken into consideration in the design of equipment, as well as in the selection of materials, in order to ensure a system which will maintain production. THE conveying of ore and waste in the pit or to the processing plant poses problems during cold weather, when temperatures may drop to -4o?F or be-low. Troubles with the mechanical components, the belting or the supporting structure may arise, and this, in turn, will reduce the availability of the conveying system.

The Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain and Portugal) contains one of the largest reserves of pyrite in the world with mining activities dating back to prehistoric times. About one hundred abandoned mine wastes and galleries release a huge acidity and metal load to the Tinto and Odiel rivers. Once the mining activity is over, polluting discharges can persists for decades or even centuries with no specific responsible entity. In-situ passive remediation technologies are especially suitable for these orphan sites. The concept is to insert a reactive porous material in the natural flow path of contaminated surface and ground waters, and it is implemented through infiltration ponds and reactive barriers, respectively. Calcium carbonate pea-size gravel is the common alkalinity supplier to neutralize acidity and precipitate metals. These remediation systems have been traditionally implemented in coal mines. However, the acid drainages from the Iberian Pyrite Belt contain metal concentrations one to two orders of magnitude higher than those from coal mines and require special designs to avoid quick clogging or passivation (coating) of the grains of reactive material. To overcome these problems, a Dispersed Alkaline Substrate (DAS) mixed from fine-grained limestone sand and a coarse inert matrix (e.g. wood chips) was developed. The small grains provide a large reactive surface and dissolve almost completely before the growing layer of precipitates passivates the substrate. The high porosity and the dispersion of nuclei for precipitation on the inert surfaces retard clogging. However, limestone dissolution only raises pH to values around 6.5, which is sufficient to precipitate the hydroxides of trivalent metals (Al, Fe), but it is not alkaline enough to remove divalent metals. Magnesium oxide, which hydrates to Mg hydroxide upon contact with water, buffers the solution pH between 8.5 and 10. A DAS system replacing limestone with caustic magnesium oxide has been tested to be very efficient to remove divalent metals (Zn, Cd, Mn, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb) from drainage previously treated with limestone.
