South Africa holds approximately 70% of the world’s total chrome reserves. Chromium is an important raw material for the production of stainless steel and ferrochrome alloys. Over the years, China’s ferrochrome market has been dependent on chrome ore imports from South Africa. In 2018, China imported about 75% of its chrome ore from South Africa. With the low platinum price and the rising demand for stainless steel, a growing demand to evaluate new beneficiation technologies for fine chromite was identified. Gravity separation of fine chromite (<75 μm) is inefficient, due to the limitations of the technology to upgrade fine particle size distributions. Potential for the recovery of chromite, specifically fines (<75μm), lost to UG2 PGM flotation tails, but also from MG and LG6 spiral circuit tailings exist. Flotation of podiform chromite ores from India and Kazhkhstan is successful in generating saleable product grade, following acid or alkaline flotation routes. Application to South African stratiform chromite is being evaluated, with the emphasis on evaluating reagent type, optimising dosages and the effect of pH in optimising flotation performance. Flotation can unlock additional value from chromite tailings material. The effect of ore characteristics such as gangue mineralogy, particle size distribution and headgrade are reported. The performance in terms of product quality and yield are evaluated and compared. The impact of this paper will not only prolong life of mine and increase revenue but will also alleviate environmental burdens associated with tailings dams. This paper analyses problems associated with cement based technique in metal mines, and provides a new mining technique of packing the tailing sand and water into solidified material. In the new technique, the cementing agent is a solidifying material containing a high percentage of water and tailing sand. The sand and water solidify into the packed body at the same time. The slurry of the packed body varies widely in concentration and suitability for different mining conditions. It consists of two liquid materials, each composed of a cementing agent, tailing sand and water. The thick liquids are transported to the packing place at the same time. Their pumping property is good; they do not solidify or block up the pipe during transportation. At the packing place, the two liquids are evenly mixed.The mixed liquid flattens out well and its solidifying speed is so fast that it solidifies into a packed body within a very short period of time. The compressed strength of the packed body can reach 1.2-5MPa in one day, which satisfies the requirements of different mining conditions. By using the new mining technique, all the tailing sand can be used again in the packed body and it is low in cost and investment. The mechanisation is easy and thus the working efficiency is increased and the use of labour decreased. Contamination problems caused by i. "A common practice in preventing gravity-fed tailing pipeline from plugging due to sanding is to add lime at relatively high dosage rates. The lime affects the rheology of the slurry ""vehicle"" which transports the coarser particles in a heterogeneous flow-regime. This paper describes a study of the effect of lime on the critical deposition velocities and friction head losses of Highmont Mining Company&apos;s mill tailing. Testwork using an extrusion viscometer was related to the surface chemistry changes brought about by the high lime additions. Lime additions which typically increased the tailing pH from 8.4 to 11.5 reduced the critical deposition velocities from approximately 3.2 to 1.7 m/sec.IntroductionCommon practice, at least in base metal concentrators in British Columbia, is to use high lime additions in tailing slurries when the pipeline becomes partially plugged with sands. Some concentrators, such as the Highmont Mining Co. Ltd. plant, add lime on a continuous basis during low tonnage periods and during startup/shutdown transition s. Although such high lime additions often solve temporary plugging problems, the effect of lime on slurry rheology has not been well understood.Slurry pipelines are designed to transport solids in suspension with a minimum of wear and without particle deposition. These two objectives are in opposition because the velocities required to maintain solid suspension can sometimes cause high head losses in the pipeline, as well as wear problems. Thus, the optimum velocity for a long distance slurry pipeline is in the range that provides just enough turbulence to keep coarse particles in suspension."

"The wet part of the Hollinger mill is housed in two buildings, the grinding plant and the treatment plant. In the grinding plant there are four 7xl5 ball mills which grind the ore to 60 per cent through 200 mesh. There is also one 7xl5 ball mill which grinds table concentrate to 9 5 per cent through 200 mesh.The primary classifier overflow is pumped to the treatment plant where it passes over shaking tables, producing a concentrate and a tail. The concentrate pulp is pumped to the grinding plant for secondary grinding. The secondary classifier overflow is pumped back to the treatment plant where it is thickened in two 40xl 5 tray thickeners and agitated in four 20x24 mechanical agitators arranged in series of two (with 2 spares).The table tail pulp is thickened in nine primary 40xl5 tray thickeners (with 2 spares). The thickened table tail pulp and the concentrate agitator discharge pulp are mixed and pumped to four rows of 15x45 pachuca agitators, arranged in series of five tanks.The pachuca discharge pulp is divided. The smaller part goes to two rows of 3-step decantation using 40xl5 tray thickeners (with 2 spare rows). The larger part goes to six 14xl6 drum filters. The repulped primary filter cake and the thickened pulp discharged from the decantation rows are fed to eight 14xl6 drum filters. The secondary filter cake is mixed with water and pumped to the tailing line."

Sulfuric Acid and Phosphate Industries at Anaconda Reduction Works. Since plant start-up in January 1983, Golden Sunlight Mines, Inc. has implemented several process changes and improvements. Among these are a pulp preaeration circuit and a sand tailings retreatment circuit. The purpose of the preaeration circuit is to reduce reagent consumption during gold dissolution. The sand tailings retreatment circuit was added to recover and process separately pyrite concentrate to maintain acceptable overall gold recoveries with the more refractory sulfide ores. Research and plant operating data along with process and improvement descriptions are presented.

Continuous 1.0- to 1.5 - ton - per - hour pilot plant flotation tests were made to determine the technical and economic feasibility of recovering beryl from flotation tailing being produced at the spodumene concentrator of the Foote Mineral Company , Kings Mountain , N.C. Best results were obtained when using an acid circuit and amine - type cationic reagents to float a bulk beryl - feldspar concentrate and then selectively floating the beryl away from the feldspar , using a petroleum sulfonate collector . About 77 percent of the beryllium in the pilot plant feed was recovered in a concentrate containing 6.42 percent BeO . The capital cost of an integrated flotation plant capable of treating 500 dry tons of spodumene mill tailing per day for recovery of beryl and feldspar is estimated at $ 210,000 . Indicated direct operating costs for the plant were $ 1.52 per ton of dry spodumene flotation tailing treated . This approximated the value of beryl recovered , but potential profits of about the same magnitude lie in concurrent recovery of marketable spodumene and feldspar byproducts .

The requirement of mineral resources is increasing as the economy is continually increasing in China. The mining practices of various complex sulphide deposits and precious metal deposits, and the treatment of mine tailings and other industrial solid wastes, have greatly improved fill quality in the metal mines. From early-1980s, high density slurry fill, paste fill of total tailings, low density slurry fill with addition of silicate gelling agent, etc has been studied and applied, and some progress has been achieved. Today, mine tailings, slag and power plant ash are widely used as fill materials in mining. A number of cemented fill mines equipped with large capacity trackless mining machines are in production. Recently, The 3rd Chinese National Symposium on Mining with Backfill, 1995 has been held, the progress of fill technology in mines has been exchanged and summarised. In the paper, some aspects of fill technology used in the metal mines of China are briefly introduced and some applications of fill research work are presented.

Based on the analysis of properties of vanadium tailing (VT), the surface modification study was carried out as a polymer filler. The modification effects of the three kinds of coupling agents on VT and the mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) composites with a modified vanadium tailing (MVT) were compared to determine the suitable surface modification agent and modification processes for VT. The results show that the best one is aluminate coupling agent DL-411. When the content is 1.2 wt% and the temperature was 100 °C, the activity index of modified vanadium tailing (MVT) is 95.53%. FTIR analysis shows that DL-411 has the strongest binding ability on VT. XRD analysis shows that VT has a heterogeneous nucleation on PP to induced b form formation, and DL-411 could enhance this nucleation. So the composites has higher strength and better toughness. When the content of MVT is 10 phr, the tensile strength, impact strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus of the composites are 47.51 MPa, 38.43 kJ/m2, 59.57 and 1654.36 MPa, respectively.

Oxidative dissolution of pyrrhotite and pyrite is largely responsible for the sulfate-rich waters of the vadose zone in the Waite Amulet tailings. Although the shallowest of the sulfate-rich waters are of the Fe-SO4 type, they change to Mg-SO4-type, near-neutral waters within 1-2 m of the tailings surface. Phyllosilicates and amphiboles are the only minerals present in sufficient quantity to ameliorate the amount of acidity produced. X-ray diffraction and microscopic studies of bulk sample indicate that quartz, chlorite, talc, amphiboles, magnetite, albite, and micas are the major and minor non-sulfide minerals, but their variations with depth do not give clear indications of depletion in the vadose zone. Mineralogical and bulk chemical compositions of the tailings confirm that Fe2O 3 has accumulated in large quantity in the vadose zone, with the Fe having been derived from Fe sulfides. When the effect of Fe2O3 is accounted for, the bulk compositions suggest that SiO2 is slightly more abundant in the vadose zone than in the saturated zone. This may be the result of residual enrichment of siliceous minerals such as quartz and albite in the vadose zone. Weathering of the tailings since the cessation of deposition in 1962 has resulted in a well-defined zone of sulfide depletion and secondary sulfate-mineral development. Although some silicate dissolution is indicated by pore-water compositions, the role of silicates in providing neutralization seems to have been minimal. The contribution by silicate minerals in laboratory tests of neutralization potential may be excessive relative to that in natural settings.

Cyanide leaching is the most common process employed in the majority of the gold extraction plants. These gold extraction plants naturally generate tailings and/or effluents that contain highly toxic cyanides, In geographic locations with excess precipitation and therefore net positive water balance, a portion of these tailings must be discharged. Before these highly toxic cyanide-containing effluents can be discharged to the waterways, cyanide and any other toxic substance must be destroyed. Geographic locations with high evaporation and low precipitation, as in the western USA, result in net negative water balance and therefore these plants can operate with a zero discharge option. However, with the current stringent environ­mental regulations and concerns for bird and wildlife mortality, even these operations may be required to partially treat their tailings to preclude potential harm to wildlife. Furthermore, heap leach opera­tions are now generally required to detoxify the heaps before abandonment. It is, there­fore, apparent that all gold extraction plants may be required to install some form of effluent treatment in order to achieve the above objectives,.

The Vernal phosphate rock concentrator is located in the Uinta Mountains near Vernal, Utah. Ore is sedimentary rock from the Phosphoria Formation. Truck and shovel mining is done at a rate of 11,500 TPD. Run of mine ore is crushed and then milled through a SAG mill and ball mill to minus 16 mesh. Milled ore is deslimed using cyclones and hydrosizers. Sands are conditioned with fatty acid, petroleum sulfonate, diesel fuel and frother prior to primary rougher and cleaner flotation. Primary flotation tailing is milled to 95% minus 48 mesh, deslimed in cyclones, conditioned using reagents previously described, and then processed through rougher and cleaner scavenger flotation. Product of scavenger cleaner concentrate is upgraded by reverse flotation of dolomite. Flotation concentrates are combined and dewatered, pulp being milled to 99.5% minus 65 mesh and then thickened to 65% solids. Product is pumped from storage through a 10 inch, 94 mile pipeline to a conversion plant at Rock Springs, Wyoming. Mill tailing is stored behind an earthen dam, water from the settled tailing being reclaimed for mill use.

The engineering and metallurgical assessment of the McLaughlin Project ore body concluded that an open-pit mine and cyanide leach mill process would be feasible, producing both waste rock and residual mill tailings. As a part of the planning and permitting process, site selection studies were conducted for the tailings and waste rock disposal. The site selection process began with a regional identification of potential disposal sites and proceeded through 1) regional screening, 2) elimination of sites with obvious fatal flaws, 3) qualitative ranking of site evaluation criteria, 4) quantitative ranking of sites, 5) field investigation, 6) evaluations of field data, and 7) selection of preferred sites. Based on this approach of site rankings and field evaluations, tailings and waste rock disposal sites were selected and recommended for the preliminary design phase of the permitting and project development process. The site selection study provided the documentation necessary to justify the use of these sites for waste disposal and enabled Homestake Mining Co. to anticipate and integrate environmental concerns with agency requirements into the planning process.

Sulfide-bearing waste rock, ore and tailings have the potential for generating acid rock drainage (ARD) when exposed to an oxidizing environment. The possibility exists of utilizing the acid produced to react with lime and/or limestone to form a self-sealing cap on the reactive waste rock and tailings. Laboratory column experiments were conducted using acid-generating waste rock with a surface amendment of limestone and/or lime. Artificial rainwater was introduced and allowed to drain through the columns. Results demonstrated that the limestone and lime reacted with the acidic rock, resulting in the precipitation of a hardpan layer of gypsum and amorphous iron oxyhydroxide at the surface. The hardpan layer significantly reduced the effective permeability of the column. Based on the results of this study, it should be possible to create hardpan layers as chemical caps to significantly reduce the infiltration of rainwater and snowmelt into acidic waste rock or tailings material in the field. Unlike traditional capping methods, e.g., clay and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) covers, chemical caps should be self-healing.

Laboratory studies had shown that the magnetite contained in serpentine asbestos ore was not uniformly distributed. Ore particles containing chrysotiye fiber responded to a magnetic f field; particles containing little or no chrysotile were essentially non-magnetic. Larger-scale tests, run with a magnetic pulley being fed various asbestos samples ranging in size from 1/4 inch to 5 inches, confirmed that magnetic separation could be used as a concentration step in an asbestos mill. Magnetic concentration was installed at the Black Lake and National mills of Lac d&apos;Amiante du Quebec and has allowed the extraction of lower-grade ore, increasing the life of the mines. In addition, preconcentration early in the flowsheet increased the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section. An increase in fiber production was achieved, as well as a decrease in maintenance costs due to removal of flow-grade tailings early in the flowsheet. Magnetic concentration of a coarse tailings from the mill resulted in recovery of additional fiber previously discarded to tailings.

About 70% of the world?s total boron reserves are located in Turkey. Boron minerals are typically concentrated by attrition scrubbing followed by screening and classification to remove clay minerals and other impurities. These wet concentration methods, however, result in a considerable amount of accumulated tailings in large tailings dams. The tailings are approximately 28% solids and contain 14% B2O3. Problems caused by these tailings can be minimized by employing dry beneficiation techniques involving heat treatment. This method has been successfully tested on laboratory and pilot scales. During heat treatment, borax undergoes expansion in volume. The amount of expansion is dependent on the particle size, temperature and duration of heat treatment. Because the optimum temperature and the duration of the heat treatment are not well defined, the boron ore acts as a calcined clay mineral and is discarded along with the gangue. It is important to predict such parameters using mathematical formulations. Thus, a mathematical model is used to predict the required temperature and duration period prior to heat treatment. In the experimental study presented here, a series of systematic thermal tests was carried out in a muffle furnace. Two variables, temperature and time, were studied in a response surface design. A quadratic regression model was chosen and regression coefficients were calculated. Using a regression equation, the volume expansion of the particles in various circumstances can be predicted. The mathematical test results are then correlated with the experimental results to relate the optimum expansion of borax with heating time and temperature and with borax grades and recoveries.

"The Batu Hijau copper/gold mine, operated by PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara, is located in the south-western part of Sumbawa Island, Indonesia, and is situated ~10 km from the south coast at an altitude of ~450 m above sea level. The mine became fully operational by year 2000 and processes approximately 120 000 t of ore per day that contain an average of 0.53 per cent copper and 0.4 per tonne (g/t) gold. Tailings management at the mine includes a deep-sea tailings placement (DSTP) system that discharges tailings through a pipeline via an outfall located at a depth of 125 m at the head of the submarine Senunu Canyon (Figure 1).The environmental impact assessment undertaken prior to approval of the DSTP evaluated both on-land tailings storage facility (TSF) and DSTP options for tailings management. Negative attributes of the on-land TSF included removal of approximately 2300 ha of forest/agricultural land, the potential relocation of &gt;2000 people from their communities, the high average annual rainfall (&gt;2500 mm) and potential for earthquakes presenting challenges for water management and creating a long-term risk of failure. The final choice and Indonesian Government’s approval of DSTP was also influenced by the close proximity of the deep submarine canyon to the mine. The Batu Hijau mine is one of the larger examples of DSTP in the world and deposits tailings at the greatest depth. The depth of the main canyon increases to &gt;2000 m within 20 km of the coast, and to &gt;3000 m approximately 50 km from the coast.The DTSP at Batu Hijau must comply with an environment management plan (EMP) and environment monitoring plan of permit stipulation that approved its commencement in 2000; updated in 2010 and 2015. The environmental management objectives were to avoid impacts to highly productive components of the ecosystem such as coral reefs, mangroves, surface waters and fisheries, and confinement of impacts to areas of low biological productivity. In the vicinity of the DSTP outfall and within the Senunu Canyon, the management plan predicted significant adverse impacts from the DSTP on the marine ecosystem in the form of: reduction in sea water quality due to elevated turbidity and dissolved copper concentrations burial of benthic organisms a reduced habitat for demersal fish.Recovery of the pelagic and benthic ecosystem to preoperating conditions was predicted to occur within the first two years after operations cease. The CSIRO has performed due diligence studies to independently verify compliance with permits and evaluate new monitoring objectives (Apte et al, 2004; Simpson et al, 2010; Angel et al, 2015), and has performed assessments of environmental monitoring data on the tailings footprint and ore stockpile processing against the above environmental objectives (Simpson and Angel, 2015).CITATION:Angel, B M, Simpson, S L and Waworuntu, J, 2016. The production of stabilised backfill at mine sites commonly uses Portland cement as the binder. Calcined gypsum has cementing properties and is cheaper to produce than cement. This paper discusses the strength of fills stabilised with calcined gypsum. Laboratory tests were carried out on specimens prepared from tailings obtained from four different sites to allow for the wide variety of tailings found in practice. The results show that the gypsum-based fills can achieve a strength of I MPa using around two and a half to four times the corresponding amount of cement.

In February, 1976, Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation obtained an option from Foote Minerals, Inc., to evaluate reprocessing of two uranium tailing piles. Foote received ownership of the Naturita and Durango tailing piles in 1967 through the purchase of Vanadium Corporation of America. The option was exercised in November, 1976, after initial testwork proved that a viable extraction technique existed. Preparation for production at Naturita began immediately with engineering and en¬vironmental permitting proceeding simultaneously. Production began in December, 1977, just 22 months after acquisition of the property and-was completed 17 months later.
