"IntroductionTHE SMALLER industrial and commercial steam generating plants in the United States are suffering from an ‘engineering deficiency' which, if allowed to continue, will probably result in the extinction of the species• that now burn •approximately 75 million tons of coal. We will classify as 'small' those plants which should require not more than one operating man per shift, including those in which as little .as thirty minutes per day should be adequate for .all service attention. These are the small steam plants that need the most, and get the least, expert attention for fuel :planning, equipment selection, design layout, .and proper operating technique. Dissatisfaction with bituminous coal is usually caused by one or more preventable weaknesses such as excessive or burdensome labour •for firing, .coal or ash handling and manual operation, smoke and fly ash emission above nuisance levels:, high maintenance and premium coal application for acceptable operation, and .finally, overall steam costs which are not .competitive. These 'deficiencies', so .common in the small coal-fired steam plants, can be readily eliminated by competent engineering and modern equipment with automatic controls."

The development of Alaska depends on the existence of an adequate fuel supply in the Territory. The need to investigate coal deposits was recognized as early as 1911, when the first investigations were conducted in Alaska by engineers of the Bureau of Mines. Conditions existing in the Bering River and Matanuska coal fields, as found by Dr. Robert A. Holmes, former Director of the Bureau of Mines, are described by the Honorable W. L. Fisher, former Secretary of the Interior./ Following Dr. Holmes' investigation, a party of Bureau of Mines engi¬neers headed by R. Y. Williams visited the Bering River field in 1912 in cooperation with the Navy Department. A detailed examination was made of the Bering River field, and 855 tons of coal were mined from three prospects on Trout Creek. This bulk sample was delivered to the Navy for steaming and other tests. A description of the work of the field party and results of tests of the coal by the Navy Department and the Bureau of Mines has been published.

This paper is one of a buries being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs at various mines in the United States, and is a description of the mining practice at Ajo, Ariz., where the New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation mines copper ore from an open pit, and operates a concentrator for the treatment of the ore thus mined. The major copper loss at Mount Lyell is in the coarsest particles presented to flotation. An analysis of data collected from the five primary and six secondary ball mill circuits showed that grinding was limited by low breakage rates in secondary mills, possibly due to oversize balls. For 5 months, the make-up ball size for one secondary mill was reduced from 50 to 30 mm. Frequent steady-state tests indicated that overall average breakage rates could be increased by about 70% using smaller balls. A mathematical simulation of the whole circuit with increased breakage rates showed that the resultant finer grind was likely to improve copper recoveries by about 22.

The discovery of important new ore deposits of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955 in Southeastern Missouri has resulted in the development of a thriving mineral industry known as the "New Lead Belt" or "Viburnum Trend", to distinguish it from the older lead producing areas to the East. This region has recently become the world's largest lead producing district with production in 1970 reaching 432,576 tons or 74.4% of the entire United States lead mine production. The area is heavily forested with rolling hills dotted with numerous clear running streams in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. The location is within 70 miles of St. Louis, Missouri and has a natural abundance of water resources which provide an important recreational area for fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities. Until this recent development, the area was sparsely populated and industrialization was almost unknown. The infusion of $150 million in mining capital has brought about a dramatic change in the economic structure of the area and will almost surely be accompanied by changes in its environmental picture. In an effort to maintain this bountiful national resource and to evaluate the changes occurring in surface water quality and aquatic life forms present, an inter- disciplinary research program at the University of Missouri has been undertaken with the support of the National Science Foundation. Research has been carried out to determine background values, establish natural baselines, and to evaluate the extent and causes of changes in streams effected by mine water discharges and wastewater from ore milling operations. The unique topography of the "New Lead Belt" area allows the channelization of milling and smelter wastes to separate stream systems (Figure No. 1) thus allowing measurements of the pollutional effects on an individual basis.

The cases of no auxiliary ventilation and ventilation with tubing were mathematically modeled, using a turbulent dispersion model. The scooptram that is used to load is modeled as a variable-speed, variable-strength source of pollutants moving in and out of the dead-ended drift. Model predictions are compared to experimental measurements. A parametric analysis was performed to determine the effect of exhaust pipe location and time spent out of the drift, as well as to determine if a relationship existed between CO2 and NO levels. It was concluded from this analysis that when modeling a load-haul-dump cycle, it is necessary to use a model that has the capability of predicting changes in source strength as well as source location. It was also determined that four relevant factors include effective heading height, apparent longitudinal diffusion coefficient, transverse concentration gradient at the face, and average dispersion width of the exhaust jet. As these factors change with heading geometry and ventilation configuration, they were determined experimentally, Carbon dioxide was used as a tracer to calibrate the model; since, knowing the fuel flow rate, it is possible to calculate CO2 production. The above four factors in the computer model were calculated using a regression analysis, comparing predicted local concentrations to measured local concentrations. The model was then verified after this calibration process using additional experimental results. With the calibrated model, it is possible to predict pollutant concentrations at any location in the heading using an engine map and the previously calculated flow field. A parametric analysis shows that the exhaust pipe location can have a significant impact on operator exposure to exhaust gases. It was also shown that NO concentration varies directly with C02 levels. Predictions using the dynamic model are contrasted with constant source strength (pollutant flow rate) results. An analysis of these predictions for computing time-weighted average NO shows the dynamic model predictions of operator exposure to this pollutant to be less than one-half of the value predicted using a constant source model.

This report presents results of a series of tests on grindability of lignites and factors that influence grindability determination. All grindability tests in this investigation were made in the standard Hardgrove test apparatus. In addition to tests on standard samples of equilibrium moisture content, grindability determinations were made on air-and oven-dried samples of lignite representing the complete range of moisture content from normal bed moisture to nearly moisture-free conditions. Grindability index for all tests was calculated both by standard method and by an alternate or "corrected" method of calculation based on directly measured weight of fine-particle material produced in the grindability test. The second method of calculation allows more satisfactorily for loss of moisture during testing of high-moisture samples.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted ground pressure analysis of a wide abutment-type chain pillar in a two-entry gate road of a Western U.S. coal mine with an extremely weak immediate roof. About 15 m of fragile, low-strength mudstone lies between the seam and the lowest competent roof member. Three-and two-entry gate road designs with several pillar sizes and various secondary support systems have been employed to improve tailgate-entry stability, with varying results. This report discusses gate road layout and performance and secondary support effectiveness. The results of the pillar pressure study are compared to pillar loading predicted by a widely used pillar design method and to similar studies in other mines. A stability evaluation of the most recent longwall headgate, using the USBM Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) method, indicates marginal stability in first-panel mining and instability in second-panel mining. The ALPS method and the USBM Coal Mine Roof Rating system are used to evaluate tailgate-mining stability of the previous gate roads and to determine pillar and entry width and top coal thickness criteria for tailgate stability in future panels.

IT is the purpose of the present paper, while not excluding chemical considerations, to deal more extensively with some of the physical and mechanical aspects of the blast-furnace process, and to point out its dependence in these respects on well-known laws. The quantity and cost of ore and flux required to make a ton of iron being determined by circumstances over which the furnace-man, under given conditions as to quality and quantity of product, has commonly little control; the principal item of cost, apart from the saving of labor, which he can aspire to reduce, is that of fuel. To determine the limits of possibility in this direction is clearly the first step in d practical inquiry; and this step is represented herewith in Fig. 1, a diagram showing the total useful effect obtained from a pound of fuel under various conditions, and thus permitting direct comparison, under any given conditions, between actual results and the maximum possible results. The following statements will explain the basis upon which this diagram has been constructed. One pound of fuel, containing 90 per cent. of fixed carbon (which represents average conditions), is taken as the unit. The degree of oxidation of the carbon is measured by the ratio of the two oxides of carbon contained in the top-gases. It is necessary to remember that a considerable quantity of carbon is brought in as carbon dioxide by the flux, and to take account of it and of its condition. It is here considered that the carbon dioxide liberated by the limestone does not affect the analysis of the toll-gases, and that the ratio of CO to CO., will remain unchanged by the addition of limestone; enough CO, being reduced by the solution

1. INTRODUCTION. THE general impression regarding the preparation of merchantable anthracite is that it is confined to a colossal, grimy structure, called a "coal-breaker." This name is misnomer; for the desired result is not to break the coal, but to prevent its being broken. Preparation may be said to begin at the face of the chamber, with the mining and loading of the coal. Local conditions vary, not only in the same field or basin, but also in the same mine, so that there is no fixed empirical rule governing the method of blasting or cutting coal. Tests should be made, when possible, to determine the explosive, or the mechanical coal-cutter, which will produce the largest percentage of what are locally known as " lump " and " prepared sizes " of anthracite. The prepared sizes are those mostly consumed for domestic purposes. All other sizes might be called by-products of the anthracite industry; for they are not especially desirable, being the degradation resulting from the mining and handling of a brittle or laminated material. Being low in volatile combustible matter, anthracite burns most successfully when nearly of a uniform size, permitting the easy passage of air through the voids. This accounts for the large number of sizes into which the coal is separated. Table I. gives the various sizes, the diameter of ring over and through which each size is made, and the usual purpose for which it is employed.

Results of research on the hydrothermal precipitation of zirconium oxide from the Bureau of Mines' zirconyl chloride-sulfate strip liquors indicate that nuclear grade material can be prepared by this process. Greater than 99% of the zirconium value can be precipitated at 250-260°C in short (5-10 minutes) reaction time without consumption of acid value of the liquor. Thus, precipitation of zirconium dioxide on a continuous basis, i.e., the zirconium dioxide is precipitated in a continuous mode of operation by pumping the strip liquor through a heated pressurized reactor and recycle of the acidic (spent) liquor to the process stage are favored. The results of accompanying studies of liquod/solid separation, product washing and dewatering, product purity, and chlorination of the product are presented and discussed.

NOTHING in this paper is to be understood as even suggesting a moment's suspension of the splendid work now going forward on the Isthmus of Panama, except so far as it is related to the proposed locks. All the work already done, and all material purchased or ordered, would be available for the plan herein proposed. The situation and the problem concerned may be summarized as. follows : The scheme of a lock-canal through the Isthmus of Panama was adopted, as is well known, on two principal grounds-namely, the greater expense of a sea-level canal, and the longer time required for its construction. Of these, the latter is believed to have been the more influential. But further developments have diminished the weight of both, so that a reconsideration of the question is warranted. It is the purpose of this paper to advocate such a reconsideration-emphasizing the importance of certain objections to the lock-canal not mentioned or not duly appreciated in the report of those members of the International Board of Consulting Engineers who favored this form; showing the nature and bearing of the new facts developed; and, finally, proposing a combination of well-known methods and apparatus, which would, in my judgment, effect the construction of a sea-level canal in less time, and perhaps at no greater cost, than will be required for the remaining work on the lock-canal. Techniques are described for recovering about 80 pct of the cobalt and nickel contained in superalloy scrap by anodic dissolution of the scrap and simultaneous electrodeposition of a pure cobalt - nickel alloy at the cathodes in an electrolytic cell partitioned by permeable diaphragms into separate anode and cathode compartments . Superalloy scrap was alternatively prepared for subsequent anodic dissolution either by melting and casting massive scrap into suitably sized anodes , by packing moderate - sized discard scrap in inert metal baskets that subsequently served as anodes , or after concentrating the superalloy portion of grinding debris , by magnetic separation to reject corundum or other abrasives , slagging any remaining abrasives from molten grindings , and finally casting the superalloy metal into anodes . In the processing , purified electrolyte -- 1 N in NiSO4 and in NiCl₂ , and 0.1 N in CoSO4 and in CoCl2 --was charged to the cathode compartments and discharged from the anode compartments at a rate sufficient to overcome the backward migration of ionic impurities from the anodes to the cathodes . Discharged electrolyte was purified by reacting it first with SO2 and next with limestone , and then recirculated to the cathode compartments , in which a 50 pct cobalt - 50 pct nickel alloy was deposited on either blanks of stainless steel or starting sheets of cobalt - nickel alloy . The process was made self - sustaining by either adding H2SO4 to the catholyte feed to throttle the rate of cobalt - nickel deposition , thereby compensating for the slower rate of cobalt - nickel dissolution from the anode and losses occurring in electrolyte purification , or alternatively , adding H₂SO4 to

The first data compiled by the Bureau of Mines relating to coal- mine accidents in the United States were published in Bulletin 69," in which the total fatalities by years and States were tabulated from 1896 to 1912. Since the publication of Bulletin 69, further research has been conducted, with the result that the bureau is now able to publish for the first time all of the fatal accidents described in the State inspectors' reports by States, causes, and calendar years, from the beginning of inspection service to date. For the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania, there is a continuous record since 1870; the records of the Pennsylvania bituminous mines are continuous from 1877, and, with the exception of one year, the Ohio records are complete from 1874 to date. In fact, the records of all of the States, with few exceptions, are complete; and incomplete data for any year may generally be attributed to the fact that no report was published during that year. The magnitude of the coal-mining industry in the United States is such that too much stress can not be placed on the need of safeguard- ing the three-quarters of a million men employed. Although the figures given herein show an appalling record for past years, they are not published for the purpose of proclaiming the high fatality rate of the past. They are a record of experience covering a period of 45 years, showing causes and results of many accidents in the coal mines of the United States. They represent a diagnosis of the hazard of the mining industry, pointing out the principal physical causes of accidents, and make available a body of uniform facts that will serve as a basis of preventive measures for use in future operations. It is with these great purposes in view that the Bureau of Mines presents the classified data in this report. Classification and study of mine accidents on the basis of number of persons killed is common and very old, but fails to throw enough light upon the problem involved. Many serious accidents in mines have no fatal results, hence in a tabulation of fatalities they are overlooked and the real hazard of the industry is not made clear. An accident does not necessarily include an injury that may result therefrom. Such accidents as the breaking of a hoisting cable, an explosion of powder, gas, or dust, a runaway car or motor are all serious. Although no loss of life results, they should be recorded, investigated, and studied to prevent their repetition. No accurate data for the United States are available showing how far the personal element as related to the miner and his co-worker, the mine foreman, or to the superintendent and others in authority, contributes to accidents. Many accidents are due to inexperience on the part of the miner, his failure to heed orders, a misunderstanding of instructions and last, but not least, carelessness of himself or his fellow worker. A foreman or superintendent may fail to give proper warning regarding the conditions of certain parts of the mine; he may not have inspected certain rooms or entries on the day of a mine accident; the mine may not be properly equipped, or the operator may neglect to comply with the inspector's recommendations. There is, therefore, a personal element on the part of both the operator and the miner that must be considered. Legislation and the enactment of compensation laws will make the operator realize the seriousness of the mine-accident situation, when fatalities and injuries are to be paid for in legal tender of the realm. The miner must be educated and made to realize the dangers he encounters; he must learn that self-preservation and the safety of his fellow workmen should receive his first attention; he should cooperate with his employer, his asso- ciates, and the State mine inspector to the end that the mine hazard may be reduced to a minimum. "Cooperation for safety" should be the watchwords of the operator, miner, State inspectors, and all others in any way interested in the mining industry.

A field test was conducted to demonstrate and quantify the relationship between deep cutting and the creation of airborne respirable dust for longwall mining With a double-ended ranging drum shearer. The testing program was carried out on the 3 North longwall of North American Coal Company's Quarto No. y mine in Claringten, Ohio. Continuous recordings of the dust levels were made at both the midface and tail ate areas. Data were collected during 27 shifts during which time 81 complete mining, cycles took place. Both drum speed and the number of picks per line were varied systematically during the testing program to alter the depth of cut while the production rate was held constant by maintaining a constant haulage speed. The test results indicated that at the midface position, airborne respirable dust was strongly dependent upon the depth of cut as influenced by both the drum speed and number of picks. Drum speed had a much stronger effect than number of picks over the experimental range, since a halving of drum speed reduced dust levels by approximately 60 percent while removal of every other vane pick resulted in only a 2.1 percent reduction at constant production. At the tailgate position, however, neither effect was strongly apparent. A tendency for the slower drum speeds to he associated with reduced power consumption and higher haulage speeds (and therefore production rates) was also noted. It is recommended that longwall operators oper¬ate at the lowest available drum speed wherever possible.

The subject of mine fires is a very wide one. To give reasonable coherency, the paper concentrates on the behaviour of fires in the ventilated airways of mines; spontaneous combustions are not considered. The following topics are considered in some detail: 1) Material selection: Performance requirements for mining materials in terms of flammability and smoke/fume production; methods of test and need for relevance to mining conditions. 2) Fire growth: The influence of material properties and method of use on the rate of growth of fire in a mine roadway; the influence of ventilation, slope, material orientation, proximity of walls and roof on fire behaviour. 3) The fire in the ventilation network: The influence of fire on the ventilation distribution; the circulation of fire products in the network. The influences of these topics in determining fire control strategy are then considered but topics such as fire detection and fire extinction methods are not reviewed in detail. An extensive Bibliography on papers relating to mine fires is included.

"Sandfire’s DeGrussa Copper-Gold operation in West Australia is a new high grade copper sulfide mine, which includes a 1.5 Mtpa concentrator which was completed in 2013.Early after commissioning, it was identified that the flotation capacity in the all-mechanical cleaner circuit was not sufficient. In order to improve recovery, the tail from the cleaner scavenger was sent back to feed the rougher scavengers. Test-work was done on-site to evaluate the possibility of using a flotation column as a pre-cleaner. A CavTube™ sparging system was selected, which is especially effective for fine ore particle flotation. Test-work was conducted at site using a 150 mm diameter unit, and then confirmed on a 500 mm diameter unit. A 4250 mm diameter full scale unit was installed in Q4 2014 and commissioned in Q1 2015. This unit gave some significant advantages including a reduction in re-grinding requirements, elimination of a circulating load and increase in the recovery of copper in the cleaner circuit and overall circuit.In this presentation, the benefits of columns and cavitation sparging for floating fine particles and rejecting fine entrained gangue will be explained. Also, the results from a lab unit and a pilot unit will be compared against the results of the full-scale unit. The paper will demonstrate the scalability of flotation columns, and which phenomena and scale-up criteria must be considered to be successful. Finally, some general observations will be made about the importance of columns in copper cleaning circuits.IntroductionSandfire Resources’ DeGrussa copper-gold concentrator is located approximately 900 km north-north-east of Perth in Western Australia. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has been monitoring and studying seismic activity associated with mining in the Coeur d'Alene silver district of northern Idaho. New statistical methods of studying the stope-scale (1-to l00-m) seismicity at one Idaho silver mine are used in this report (part 1) and its companion (part 2). This report deals with methodology and its limitations. The recent concept of fractals and their seismological use is discussed and applied to mining-induced seismicity. Three types of fractal studies are addressed: spatial analyses (including temporal changes of spatial patterns), temporal analyses, and size analyses. Other statistical measures of mine seismicity are also addressed: event mean location, inter-event distance distribution skewness, temporal coefficient of variation, nearest neighbor and next event statistics, and event location planarity patterns. Each of the methodologies discussed (fractal and nonfractal) is presented using sample data from two stopes in the mine. It is shown that stope-scale, mining-associated microseismicity has a fractal nature. The usefulness of demonstrating fractality (scale invariance) for predictive or descriptive purposes depends on recognition of the factors affecting the calculation of fractal dimensions. Several methodological traps are illustrated that can lead to an incorrect conclusion.

Hydrogen sulphide associated with the gasps and vapors from certain crude oils now produced in the United States has forced a serious health and safety problem upon the petroleum industry. Although the presence of hydrogen sulphide in or occurring with Mexican crudes has been known for some time, it was not until recently that crude oils which give off poisonous amounts of hydrogen sulphide have been produced to any extent in the United State. The injurious effects of this poisonous gas were first recognized by the refiners along; the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts upon receiving shipments of crude petroleum from Mexico. The problem of combating the hazards of the gases and vapors given off by this petroleum become more important as the use of Mexican crude increased. In 1925, the Bureau of Mines and Public Health Service under cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, studied the causes rend effects of hydrogen sulphide poisoning. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 2312 is report of this investigation, and although written with special reference to refineries, it nevertheless contains much information that is of value to the producer of petroleum.
