The inplace cyanidation leaching of gold from placer deposits is a potential method for treating gravels too deeply buried and too low in gold content to be processed economically by conventional dredging methods. Laboratory experiments were made to evaluate those placer cyanidation factors adaptable to small-scale studies. The variables investigated included gold particle size and location in sand beds, cyanide solution flow rate, and cyanide solution strength as factors affecting gold solubility rates. The solution flow rate, in turn, was influenced by variables such as bed slope, solution head pressure, and sand size, and the effects of these factors were studied. Free gold, minus 150-mesh and finer in size, is rapidly dissolved by dilute cyanide solutions from mixtures of gold and silica sand prepared to simulate placer deposits. About 94 percent of minus 325-mesh free gold was extracted in 5 hours from silica sand mixtures, and 94 percent extraction of minus 150-mesh gold was obtained in 21 hours with 0.1 percent NaCN solutions. Moving solutions were almost twice as effective in leaching free gold from silica sand mixtures than stagnant solutions.

"At the beginning of 2007 the Austrian contractor PORR was awarded with remediation works for a 48-km long part of the railway line from Campina to Predeal – part of the Trans European main Corridors TEN-T priority line 22 Bucurest – Brasov, connecting the southeast European countries with the heart of Europe.Due to partly new realignment and change of regular sections as well as protection against rockfall and slope slide a huge bunch of slope stabilization works became necessary, which were awarded to the contractor PORR and their designer IB-Brandner.Following the studies of the tender documents for the planned protection measures responsible managers of PORR decided to propose an alternative protection design by IB- Brandner. Changing the original design a more flexible and environmentally compatible solution consisting of high performance net, soil nailing and rockfall protection systems (fences) was elaborated and adapted to local needs. During design process, several critical areas were identified and additionally taken into account.In the paper examples of the design and erection process show how difficulties in implementation starting with the presentation of the idea continuing to the realization on site were managed and a technically more sophisticated and commercially competitive solution could be delivered to the customer Romanian Railway – case study.The European Commission awarded – following an election process in which all citizens of the EU could join - the remediation project Railway line Campina – Predeal in Romania as the environmentally best EU co-financed infrastructure project. GENERAL PROJECT EVALUATIONDue to original design slope stabilization should be done by concrete slabs fixed with prestressed anchors and shotcrete cover.The area to be secured was limited to a 12-meter strip left and right from the railway track without reference to nature and local needs. Discussions with the client and his designer and rising awareness for the hazards to address took several months. Site visits in Austria to provide insight in the problems of dealing with natural hazards helped to convince the client of the needs and our alternative design."

In response to the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, mandatory noise standards have been developed that specify time-noise limits of mine personnel exposure. Most affected by elevated noise levels is the pneumatic roof bolter operator, both in terms of levels near or in excess of 115 dbA and in terms of length of exposure. Therefore, the principal emphasis of this Bureau of Mines report is on pneumatic drill noise control. It is not the intent of this report to suggest any drill redesign; instead, methods are suggested to reduce the noise level by complementing existing machines. An integral muffler system and a separate muffler system were tested in an attempt to lower pneurnaric drill noise levels. Pneumatic drills, when new, operate at about 115 dbA when drilling in sandstone. Using the drill muffler systems, it was possible to decrease the noise level of a 115 -dbA s rope drill to approximately 100 dbA.

Elastic wave velocities and moduli were determined by both the pulse and resonance methods in a large number of specimens of St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite and Tennessee marble under the same moisture, temperature, and stress environment. Long cylinders were first tested by the resonance method to obtain longitudinal bar and torsional wave velocity. The cylinders were then sectioned in half and tested by the pulse method to obtain the transient pulse velocity. These velocities were later used to obtain various moduli for comparison. Statistical comparisons between the Young's, shear, and bulk moduli and Poisson's ratios obtained independently by the pulse and resonance methods indicate that the methods do not give equivalent results in nearly isotropic rock. The amount of difference varies for each modulus, with the least difference (less than 5 pct) occurring in the shear modulus and the greatest difference (as high as 34 pct) in the bulk modulus. Moduli determinations in aluminum show much closer agreement between the pulse and resonance methods than in rock. The discrepancy in pulse and resonance results probably is caused by frequency dispersion effects and by differences in error sensitivity in the various formulas used to calculate the moduli.

Today, mine backfilling has become an integral part of mining operations, both from a local and overall ground control point of view, and as regards mining techniques and environmental considerations. During the past decade, substantial research has been carried out to contribute to the better understanding of the mechanisms involved in mine backfill behaviour. This work involved analytical, experimental and numerical studies at different scales. Accordingly, this work has been aimed at developing backfill design guidelines for actual working conditions. Backfill design for deep mining conditions is complex and requires understanding of various elements. The most important of these elements are: backfill inherent strength parameters, backfill placement method, stope geometry and interaction between backfill and host rock. The mobilization of backfill strength parameters controls the backfill behaviour and thus, its failure mode. It is believed that the governing boundary conditions and backfill-rock interaction influence the backfill strength mobilization significantly. Accordingly, the interaction between backfill and host rock is an influential factor in overall backfill behaviour under applied loads. The focus of this research is to investigate the backfill-rock interaction, considering a nonlinear behaviour for both backfill and rock mass. Assuming typical stope geometry, the FLAC code was used to model the complex boundary condition associated with narrow vein mining conditions and to simulate the backfill behaviour. A comprehensive numerical study was conducted and the results obtained were compared against field observations. The analysis of findings provides qualitative results, which can be used for backfill design. Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The Zinca area was chosen as a suitable location for an investigation of the weathering and secondary dispersion of platinum group metals from the Zone. It was concluded that platinum is immobile while within weathered rock, its mineral phases tending to alter from primary sulphides and tellurides to secondary Pt-Fe alloys. Palladium is variably mobile in weathered rock. In stream sediments Pt occurs mainly as small, dense, discrete particles, giving rise to a nugget effect, whereas Pd probably occurs as much finer particles or chemically adsorbed on to a suitable substrate. Pt shows a rapid decrease in sediments downstream from mineralisation, whereas Pd has a much slower downstream decay

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O'Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. Static-Load Piledriving systems utilize hydraulic push to advance piles into the ground. Dynamic systems (ie. hammers and vibratory equipment) utilize impact, or vibration, to advance the piles. Static-Load systems are most commonly utilized in situations where noise or vibration would adversely affect the people, structures or equipment located near the site. Static-Load technology is most advantageous in situations where vibration, noise or access constraints make it difficult, risky or disruptive to utilize conventional piledriving systems.

The approach has been applied with success to the restoration of chalk workings in southern England, and research and trials relating to restoration blasting and the replication of limestone dale landforms have been undertaken. An essential prerequisite for application of the technique is rigorous geomorphological analysis of the locality to ensure that final quarry landforms are consistent with the local geomorphological and landscape setting. It is always important to ensure compatibility of the final landform with the intended after-use, and to achieve this it is also essential that such restoration schemes have a sound geotechnical basis. A disadvantage of the approach is that final slopes tend to be flatter, especially in weaker strata where natural slopes are not steep; the implications for reserves may be unacceptable, particularly in quarry extensions

Development of the Batu Hijau copper project was completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the formal handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The project began in August 1996 when the owner, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC)contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for the development of the project. This included a copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and the procurement of the mine equipment. In 1996, Batu Hijau was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Developing the Batu Hijau Mine was complex. It involved the work of thousands of people in all parts of the world to plan, engineer, procure, fabricate and manufacture equipment, supply and deliver materials and equipment, and build the plant.

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. While the United States and the rest of the world struggles with record-setting oil prices Canadian oil sands producers are ramping up production to meet demand for oil while also fighting against a host of negative images. In recent months, the price of oil has skyrocketed. Most of that oil comes from Saudi Arabia. In Alberta, Canada there are unconventional oil reserves that rival those in Saudi Arabia in the vast Canadian oil sands, sometimes called the tar sands. Proponents of the oil sands say that Alberta?s oil sands can be a secure source of oil and energy for the United States for many years to come. With new mining and drilling projects, the industry has said that it could quadruple its production to nearly 4 million bbl/day by 2020. Time magazine once called the oil sands, ?Canada?s greatest buried treasure that could satisfy the world?s demand for petroleum for the next century.? So why hasn?t the United States embraced this close, politically secure source of energy? Because, getting usable fuel from the oil sands can be a dirty business, say opponents. The oil sands are a combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen. It is a heavy, black, thick oil. Oil sands can be mined and processed to extract the oil-rich bitumen, which is then refined into oil. The bitumen cannot be pumped from the ground in its natural state. Instead, tar sand deposits are mined, usually using strip mining or openpit techniques, or the oil is extracted by underground heating with additional upgrading. These methods require a huge amount of energy and water and produce a large amount of carbon emissions. Environmental groups that have long spoken out against the oil sands projects got some political backing in the United States in June when a group of mayors from large U.S. cities spoke out against the oil sands, as did presumptive Democratic candidate for U.S. president Barack Obama?s senior energy advisor. During a convention of large-city mayors in Miami, FL, Alberta?s oil sands were singled out in a nonbinding resolution calling for national guidelines to track the lifecycle impact of different types of fossil fuels. The resolution urges cities not to use unconventional sources of energy with a large carbon footprint, such as liquid coal and oil shale and oil sands.

MESA Corporation has completed a four-year program for the Bureau of Mines to develop a technique for measuring roof competence in underground coal mines. The preferred technique employs a tracer gas that is injected into a roof borehole drilled near the working face. The tracer gas performs the dual purpose of determining the pressure loss rate from the borehole and of marking the diffusion pattern of the the escaping gas. The primary detection technique relies upon observation of the rate of pressure drop in a hole drilled in the roof strata under test. If this measurement indicates a significant probability of roof collapse, the gas diffusion pattern is outlined with the Leak-gun tracer-gas detector. These two techniques provide a comprehensive method for predicting the relative probability of roof collapse in operating coal mines.

Most, if not all, of the six recognised post-Cretaceous, predominantly andesitic mineralised belts in the region are now thought to be subduction-related magmatic arcs. The Inner Carpathian arc and the Eastern Bosnia or Drina-Rhodope arc host numerous vein and replacement deposits with epithermal features and Zn-Pb+/-Ag as the predominant economic minerals. In contrast, the south Apuseni Mountains have produced over 1 600 t Au from epithermal veins but very little Zn-Pb. Recent age determinations and geophysical data from the Baia Mare district of the Inner Carpathians suggest that mineralisation succeeded volcanism by 1-2 m.y. and accompanied crustal extension and the cooling of a large, mushroom-shaped pluton whose boundaries define the mineral district. In the south Apuseni district, mineralisation can be explained by mixing of meteoric with low-salinity metamorphic water expelled during intrusion of mafic rocks into the middle or lower crust. The more continental or cratonic crust in the Drina-Rhodope and Inner Carpathian arcs precluded the input of low-salinity, Au-bearing metamorphic water; the Zn-Pb deposits formed where convecting meteoric water mixed with saline water, possibly introduced through carbonate rocks in the basement

Glass wool meeting requirements for commercial use was made from glassy fractions of urban solid wastes by the Bureau of Mines. This research was a part of the Bureau's program to develop building products and other usable materials from reclaimed urban waste materials. Mixes of molten glass were fiberized into glass wool during laboratory studies by impingement of a jet of compressed air on a stream of the molten glass. The principal test variable studied was composition of the melt; this was varied by adding dolomite and alumina to obtain molten glass with the handling characteristics required for producing final wool products of the desired composition and physical characteristics. When no charge is made for the waste glass and approximately $75 per ton can be obtained for the wool product, an interest rate of return on investment after taxes of about 12 percent can be obtained. If a charge of $5 per ton is required for the waste glass, a selling price of about $78 per ton would be necessary to obtain a l2-percent-interest rate of return on investment after taxes.

These are complementary to, or replacements for, surface boreholes, underground development drivages and seismic techniques. This report presents the results of a Bureau of Mines laboratory investigation of the effect of water sprays in reducing respirable dust that escaped the face area of a full-scale wooden model of a mine en-try containing a wooden model of a ripper-type continuous mining machine and exhaust brattice. Areas examined were (a) the general effectiveness of a low-pressure water spray system mounted on top of the mining machine boom, a high-pressure spray system mounted under the boom, and the combined top-and bottom-spray systems, and (b) the effect of these three spray systems on the capture of coal dust particles of different sizes. Dust was injected into a sump cavity at the face. Airborne respirable dust concentration was mea-sured behind the brattice with a personal sampler and cyclone, and particle size distribution was mea-sured with a cascade impactor. When used alone, the top-spray system captured about 55 pct of the respirable dust in the face area and the bottom-spray system captured 60 pct; the capture efficiency of each system is decreased when they are used simultaneously. From a mass-concentration viewpoint, each spray system preferentially captures larger dust particles.

One of the major activities of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and other industries, In this connection, the Bureau determines the explosion hazards' of combustible gases, vapors, and solids and investigates means of controlling and preventing explosions. Many dangers are likely to confront men who must enter a building immediately after it has been damaged. Rescue workers must watch constantly for common gases and vapors that may be present in dangerous concentrations in and about demolished, buildings. Fuel gas is the most common source of danger, although refrigerants, gases from furnaces, flues, fires, sewers, and industrial processes, and gas from bomb, explosions in confined places also constitute definite hazards. To rescuers and trapped casualties, these gases offer the hazards of (1) explosion, (2) toxic effects, including asphyxiation and death, and (3) displacement of air so that the oxygen content of the atmosphere is reduced to or below the danger level.

In most mines using presplitting the final excavated wall shows a zone of damage just below the crest and well defined presplit half barrels. The crest damage (surface dilation) zone varies and is added to by subsequent adjacent perimeter blasting operations. Keeping the preconditioning to a minimum is possible using the methods described in this paper, developed on several diverse and geographically distant mining operations to control crest dilation and preconditioning by presplitting in advance - not just laterally but vertically in advance. The first documented case (Delbridge, Marton and McSweeney, 2004) in the development of the concept was undertaken at AngloGold Australia Pty Ltd's Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM), located beside Lake Carey, some 730 km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The mine had been developed in a series of cutbacks to a depth of over 300 m and began underground mining during the latter stages of open cut operations. This mine is fairly unique in that it utilised a single pass vertical presplit which initially extended over three bench heights and after the failure mechanisms were understood, over four benches. The presplit drilling for the three stacked benches started on the floor of the second bench so that any dilation was confined to the surface one bench above the crest and modified perimeter blasting was then developed to curtail damage from blasting adjacent to the new crest. The second case is based on a South African coal mine in the Witbank Coal Measures, 140 km northeast of Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa (RSA). It was important that blasting for optimal wall stability and minimal scaling was developed in advance. A dragline is scheduled to excavate the #2 seam midburden which is the lowest of the economically viable coal seams in the five seam Witbank Coal Measures. Mining of the overburden, coal and partings above the dragline midburden pass are by excavator and truck and each mining layer is individually blasted. The results of presplitting the midburden through the overlying coal seams and partings have provided a presplit with no surface dilation of the midburden crest and ensures any subsequent crest loss is solely due to blasting adjacent to the vertical presplit. Typical of all coal mines in South Africa only vertical presplits are used. Wall control is most commonly delivered by presplit blasting and one common sight after the dust clears is a ridge of broken blocks along the presplit row, usually with a main crack running between the presplit blastholes and often parallel cracks either side of the perimeter line. The surface rock strata or block structures have been dilated by the venting gases and shock waves. Decoupled, fully coupled, single or double deck charges are used depending on a variety of factors, anecdotal practices and perceived benefits. Preconditioning of the crest rock by blasting from above may not be visible to the naked eye (or non-existent in overburden in strip coal mines) but the high speed venting of explosives gases (and often the water in the presplits) preferentially follow existing cracks and structures because there is no developed presplit crack near the surface. This nearly always lifts, shifts and separates the surface structures and geological layers. Stopping the dilation by 'sacrificial' or 'in advance' presplitting has been shown to reduce the crest loss at both metal and coal mines. Drilling and presplit blasting through an upper level of bench or layer provides a degree of restraint to the target layer where the crest must be maintained and any damage caused by the venting gases will not cause concern as it is removed as planned, leaving a stable crest.
