The flotation of nickel sulphide minerals is normally difficult in the presence of serpentine minerals due to the coating of serpentine particles on the nickel mineral surface. To improve the flotation, dispersants such as polyphosphate and carboxy methyl cellulose are normally used to remove the slime coating. However, in the flotation using high ionic strength process water, these dispersants are invalid due to their ionic nature. In this study, a new type of non-ionic dispersants, Pluronic triblock copolymers were examined with an objective of improving the flotation of ultrafine pentlandite (a nickel sulphide mineral) in the presence of lizardite (a serpentine mineral) in saline water. Three Pluronic triblock copolymers varying in solubility and hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) values were studied by flotation tests, settling tests and froth measurement. It was found that two of the copolymers improved pentlandite flotation against lizardite, and one copolymer deteriorated the flotation. The effect of Pluronic triblock copolymers on the flotation was actually linked to their dispersibility and foamability, which were governed by their physical properties. The two copolymers with a higher solubility or HLB value produced more stable mineral suspensions and more stable froth in the flotation resulting in better nickel grade and recovery in both rougher and cleaner flotation. This report is volume 1 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation, and ventilation. This volume of the final report contains a statement of the purpose and scope of work of the Grant, and provides an overview of the Master Design Simulator with a brief description of each subsystem. Also included is a discussion of several areas of application for the simulator.

The Bureau of Mines undertook a limited feasibility study to determine the practicality of removing copper from automobile scrap by thermal treatment. Test specimens, prepared by wrapping bare and insulated copper wire around small steel coupons, were heated at 600° to 1,150° C in various atmospheres for different lengths of time under both static and dynamic conditions. The tests indicated that adequate removal of copper cannot be effected by thermal treatment of scrap above the melting point of copper. Tests showed that copper present in scrap as insulated wire is embrittled by thermal treatment at 800° to 900° C if the insulation contains lead, and that the embrittled copper is almost completely removed by a mechanical action such as tumbling. Also chemical pretreatment of specimens to effect embrittlement of copper and the magnetic separation of oxide scale were studied. Tests showed that bare copper can be embrittled by depositing waterglass (Na, Si409) on copper prior to thermal treatment.

"Eicosanoids and cytokines produced by alveolar macrophages (AM) are key mediators of pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis. In order to determine if eicosanoid production and cytokine production are altered in AM obtained from coal miners, we compared production of prostaglandin E2 (PCE2), thromboxane A2 (TXA2), leukotriene B4 (LTB4), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1B ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNfa.) by cultured AM from normal human subjects and coal miners. The recovery of AM from miners' lungs by bronchoalveolar lavage was significantly greater than that from control subjects. Mean eicosanoid and cytokine production by AM from active miners was also increased compared to AM from control subjects, but this increase was not statistically significant. AM from control subjects produced significantly more TXA2 and TNFa. when exposed to lipopolysaccharide than did AM from miners. The cyclooxygenase inhibitor suprofen reduced PGE1 and TXA1 production and TNF0t. release but had no effect on LTB4 production or IL-1B release by miners' AM. The lipoxygenase inhibitor nordihydroguaiaretic acid attenuated TNFa release, as well as that of LTB4, but had no effect on IL-1B release. Inhibition of thromboxane synthase by UK 38,485 also reduced TNFa release by active miners ' AM but had no effect on PGE1, LTB, production, or IL-1 f3 release. The results of these studies suggest that occupational inhalation of coal dust may increase total lung eicosanoid and cytokine levels and reduce the reactivity of AM to bacterial endotoxin. Furthermore, coal dust-induced changes in both eicosanoid and cytokine release may be subject to pharmacological modulation.The alveolar macrophage (AM) is a primary defensive cell in the lung and is one of the first cell types to encounter inhaled mineral dust. The response of the AM to invading foreign material is designed to enhance the defensive capacity of the lung. However, in the case of occupational inhalation of mineral dust particles, this response may be inappropriate, resulting not in the defense of the lung but in chronic inflammation and fibrosis (Rom et al., 1987; Takemura et al., 1989). The reaction of the AM to chronic mineral dust exposure may involve the exaggerated release of paracrine mediators of lung function, including eicosanoids (oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid) and peptides, including cytokines and growth factors (Sibille & Reynolds, 1990). Eicosanoids are involved in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, vascular permeability, fibroblast growth, and the recruitment of additional immune cells to the alveolar space (Barnard et al., 1992; Elias et al., 1985; Scott et al., 1982). AM-derived cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 B) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TN Fa) have a variety of biological activities including the regulation of fibroblast growth and proliferation (Becker et al., 1989; Libby et al., 1989; Schmidt et al., 1984). Interestingly, in vitro studies with macrophages suggest that the production of cytokines may be linked to eicosanoid production, in particular that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) may down-regulate IL-1 f3 and TN Foe production by the AM (Bonta et al., 1989; Kunkel et al., 1986; Monick et al., 1987)."

A study has been undertaken into mine ventilation systems currently in use within Australian modern coal longwall (LW) extraction mines. It reviews systems and discusses evolving changes being adopted to address the more complex challenges. There is a strong move to longer panels, wider faces, greater extraction heights, increased production rates, more efficient ventilation and decreased personnel. Each of these changes is motivated by improvement in productivity and generally leads to cost reduction. In addition, mine workings are moving deeper, which results in increased ventilation control issues such as higher total and respirable dust levels, greater seam gas contents in parallel with lower in situ permeabilities, spontaneous combustion and heat management issues. A comprehensive database of Australian LW ventilation practice is analysed. Currently there are a variety of LW panel ventilation circuits used in Australian underground coal mines due to various combinations of seam characteristics, gas emission rates, spontaneous combustion, geological features and surface constraints. The main issues usually addressed in the designing and planning of ventilation circuits for LW panels are airway velocity, gas concentrations, LW cutting methods (eg Bi-di, Uni-di or half web), ventilation of control devices, pressure differentials and leakage paths and understanding gas concentrations across the length and width of the goaf. If the ventilation circuit can manage the applied contaminant load (gases, heat and dust) at an acceptable cost and circuit duty, then supplementary controls, such as gas drainage, refrigeration and dust sprays and scrubbers, may not be required. Mining practices at the Sunnyside Mines, Sunnyside Coal Company, Sunnyside, UT, have been documented by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers to preserve the extensive history of yield pillar-based longwall gateroad system evolution on the property. An overview of the historical mining conditions, practices, and innovations that resulted in the evolution of the two-entry yield pillar gateroad system currently employed at Sunnyside was developed from interviews of 30 long-time Sunnyside employees. Employing yielding chain pillars at Sunnyside virtually eliminates tailgate pillar bumps and contributes to reducing face bumps. Limiting the overall width of the gateroad system benefits bump control and especially, roof and floor stability.

The evaluation of existing rock stresses from measurements of the change in diameter of a borehole that is stress relieved by overcoring has become a common practice, The stress evaluation has been generally based ,on isotropic relations whereas rock in varying degrees is anisotropic. A plane elasticity solution for a circular hole along one axis of an orthotropic medium is adapted for evaluation of in situ stress from borehole deformation measurements. A consistent triaxial testing approach for determining elastic properties of the overcore is also outlined. Comparison of isotropic with anisotropic interpretations of the state of stress show that large errors in evaluation may occur if the anisotropic character of the rock is neglected.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. "Hydrocyclone separators are widely used in various industrial applications in the oil and mining industries to sort, classify and separate solid particles or liquid droplets within liquid suspensions, which are considered to be multi-phase systems. Numerous valuable studies have been conducted in recent years to investigate the flow fields inside hydrocyclones. However, much of the information regarding the performance of cyclones in the literature has limitations, based in some part on the respective current-available theoretical models, and much of it cannot be considered as completely applicable to most real-world applications; many of the studies investigated the flow fields within extremely simplified hydraulic designs that are not representative of the complex geometries or large sizes which are typical in industry. Therefore, in this study, the two phase flow system inside the actual hydraulic geometry of a milling circuit hydrocyclone was explored with the aid of both computational and experimental techniques (Particle Image Velocimetry). In this study, the flow field with an air core has been investigated; in essence, the research was a two-phase problem, which caused some challenges on both the computational and experimental sides. Two turbulence models were used in the numerical calculations: the Reynolds Stress Model and Large Eddy Simulation. The computational studies are mainly focused on the prediction of the dimensions and shape of the air core. Different section planes of the hydrocyclone were selected as planes of interest and then were divided into several fields of view (FOV) for PIV measurements. Two dimensional experimental velocity vector maps were obtained in each of the fields of view. The computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow rate readings at the boundaries and locally by comparison to the PIV velocity vector maps and profiles. INTRODUCTION A hydrocyclone is a device used to separate a solid-liquid, liquid-liquid, solid-gas, or liquid-gas suspensions into at least two separate density or particle size components. Hence, the flow field of the hydrocyclone is generally considered a multi-phases flow system. Application of hydrocyclones have been used in numerous industries including oil, drilling, metal working, and mineral processing since 1891, when E. Bretney obtained the first patent for the predecessor design of all contemporary hydrocyclones. A modern hydrocyclone typically consists a cylindrical section at the top where the liquid is being fed tangentially, and a conical chamber attached to the bottom of the cylindrical section, as shown in Figure 1. The characteristics of the feed stream that is injected into the cylindrical chamber play a significant role in hydrocyclone operation. The inlet is tangential relative to the cylindrical chamber and hence causes a centripetal force in the flow field which is considered as the primary separation mechanism."

A FEW years ago the writer had the privilege of examining a piece of apparatus in the Forest Products Laboratory of McGill University which engaged his attention. The Forest Products Laboratory has an excellent installation of wood-grinding machinery, and the officials in charge were naturally interested in acquiring means for estimating the fineness of various wood grinds. The problem was referred to Dr. O. Maass ( l ). Dr. Maass designed a piece of equipment to measure the surface of a wood grind and derived an equation applicable in calculating its value, as follows : After inspecting this apparatus, the writer was disposed to believe that, with some modifications, Dr. Maass' ingenious idea might be utilized to measure the surface of mineral powders. Obviously, some difficulty would be found in maintaining an even suspension of mineral particles of high specific gravity compared to that of wood pulp. The writer will not bore the reader with a description of the various machines built and tried out. Some of these were satisfactory enough to obtain some valuable information, and to bring to light a difficulty which threatened to bring the investigation to an abrupt ending. For the mineral quartz, it was found that Kin the formula above stated was not a constant.

Ridgeway Gold Mine (RGM) is an underground sublevel caving (SLC) operation that is owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited (NML). Production drill and blast practices are critical to the success of the SLC method at RGM. SLC production ring precharging was introduced in November 2001 to enhance these practices and deliver safety, productivity and cost improvements. Current precharging practices require up to two rings to be loaded ahead of the ring to be blasted in each drawpoint. The explosive may be required to remain in the up-holes for periods of four weeks or more prior to blasting. During this æsleepÆ time it is subjected to repeated shock from the blasting ofadjacent rings and from rings in adjacent drawpoints. The project described in this paper was designed to gain an understanding of the factors affecting explosive performance in the precharging environment and to develop explosive products and operating practices that would meet RGMÆs requirements in terms ofsaf ety, reliability and blast outcomes. Several months oflaboratory and field testing were required to characterise the explosive and quantify the effect of post-loading blasting shock. These results were used to determine the most appropriate loading and sleep time criteria for RGMÆs precharging practices. In addition, the information is being used to guide the development of the next generation of emulsion explosives for use in underground precharging operations.

Introduction The operations of The Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, L1mited, have always been concerned with the mining of low-grade copper ores. In the fifty years of this Company's existence, nearly 60,000,000 tons of such material has been successfully mined and treated. During these years, many changes in mining practice took place. However, at Copper Mountain, due to the large tonnages of very low grade material, it was realized that something more than changing mining methods would have to take place if these low-grade orebodies were to be mined at a profit and the Company and. its employees enjoy many years of successful operation and employment. Production costs were mounting commensurately with rising taxes and the increasing cost of supplies, labour, freight, and smelting, while the value of the product on the market was not increasing in price to compensate for the higher costs of production. A survey of the mineable ore in 1944 indicated that, of the 12,000,000 tons in the reserves, only 3,500,000 tons was now profitable ore. This reduction in the commercial ore reserves was a serious matter, as it meant that the mine had only two years of life at the profitable shipp1ng rate of 4,800 tons per day. Further, the location in the mine of the orebodies making up the 3,500,000 tons was not suitable for such high production.

Good afternoon gentlemen. To begin, may I say ?thank you? to the AIME for the invitation to be here today to talk about my company's experience with shovel, truck, pocket, to car loading. The other author of this paper is here today. (Introduce John Sweet). Before we get to the details of this paper I want to tell you a little about Erie Mining Company. Erie Mining Company is located on the east end of the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota and is engaged in the business of processing taconite rock into iron ore pellets. In 1970, the twelfth year of production, Erie will produce its rated capacity of 10.3 million tons of high grade iron ore pellets. The plant is the first of five iron ore pelletizing operations managed by Pickands Mather & Co. with a combined annual production capacity of 21 million tons. This plant began producing high grade iron ore pellets in 1957 placing it among the earliest of taconite production facilities in North America. Historically Pickands Mather & Co. had been a leading natural ore mine managing firm in the Great Lakes region for more than 70 years. Pickands Mather & Co. moved into the new field of taconite mining and processing with management and operational experience from the open pits and underground mines. We were to learn much of volume taconite handling requiring new equipment and new procedures. A trial and error period through the early years of taconite processing developed through the operation of an experimental sized preliminary plant near the present Erie Mining Company site.

The Bureau of Mines investigated pegmatite and granite formations at Copper Mountain, Fremont County, Wyoming, for recovery of tantalum and niobium. Sampling of surface exposures identified about 1.27 mega tonne of pegmatite resource material ranging between 0.02 and 0.04% Ta20, and 0.007% Hb20,. Beneficiation studies were conducted involving coarse-grained and fine grained pegmatite samples. Over 80% recovery of the coarse-grained tantalite was achieved in a concentrate averaging over 45% combined tantalum-niobium oxide. Lower concentrate grades and recoveries resulted from the treatment of fine-grained pegmatite.

An alternate development drilling strategy to the one currently in use at the nine was investigated using geostatistics for a portion of the pit. The study area consisted of 4,000' x 5,000' in plan and 1,080' in elevation. The massive orebody, the three-dimensional nature of the problem, and the location of ultimate pit limit in the study area all created some unique problems in devising the development drilling strategy, as compared to the two-dimensional tabular deposits such as coal deposits. Rather than using the confidence interval of the global reserve estimate as the main criterion for development drilling, the confidence interval of short and medium range mine planning blocks was used as the objective. Based on somewhat arbitrarily selected level of confidence, the results from this study showed that a total of 50 DDHs rather than the planned 62 DDHs is sufficient in the study area, if the selected confidence levels are acceptable to the management. This paper also emphasizes the importance of the particular objectives being used in development drilling and how they influence the "optimai" place- ment of the development drill holes.

"A laboratory study was undertaken to determine the condensed equilibrium phase relations at 600°C in that portion of the quaternary Fe-Ni-Cu-S system which lies in the neighbourhood of the monosulphide solid solution (MSS). The study sought to determine to w hat extent copper affects the temperatures of stability and compositions of iron-nickel sulphides in bulk compositions similar to those of massive Fe-Ni-Cu ores. Experimental data, including stable phase assemblages and phase compositions, are presented.In the quaternary system at 600°C MSS forms stable phase assemblages with pentlandite, chalcopyrite solid solution, pyrite and vaesite. Over the range of bulk compositions displayed by natural ores copper as well as metal/sulphur ratio have a significant effect on the thermal stability of pyrite and pentlandite. Errors therefore accompany the widespread practice of ignoring copper or chalcopyrite when the mineralogical and compositional changes that have accompanied the initial cooling of primary magmatic sulphides or their subsequent homogenization during isochemical metamorphism are being deciphered. These errors are most significant for ores the bulk compositions of which lie tow ard the sulphur-deficient side of the cupriferous MSS. Temperatures as much as 300°C above the copper-absent value are possible for the interpreted upper stability limits of pentlandite in these ores.The experimental data show that up to 2.0 at% copper can occur in pentlandite stable at 600°C in a bulk composition equivalent to natural magmatic ores. This is equivalent to nearly 10 vol% chalcopyrite. Pentlandite contains more copper than coexisting MSS and the copper content of both phases increases with increasing iron."

The impact of smoothing on the definition of ore and waste boundaries using linear estimation and conditional simulation methods is discussed. The nature of transfer functions is examined including their ability to incorporate categorical data (e.g. a dominant lithology code). An Ore Block Optimization (OBO) transfer function is presented that provides a clear guide for the mining geologist. Advantages are seen in defining stockpile cut-off grades and meeting production targets such as maximizing head grade, maximizing ore tonnes or minimizing ore loss or dilution. Each of these scenarios impacts on mine profitability and grade control.

The Methane Control and the Respirable Dust Groups at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center (TCMRC) cooperated recently in obtaining production samples of approximately 1 ton each, from the loading conveyors of a ripper, a borer, and a loading machine in conventional development headings. These samples were sized, in four stages, from plus 4 in to minus 10 µm. The conventional product had the least fines of the three production methods. The borer product had more fines than did the ripper product, but it also had a greater amount of large pieces. All three products, as sampled, had essentially the same amount of minus 10-µm particles. Photomicrographs and surface?-area comparisons were made. Gas -adsorption, surface-area determinations on particles under 37 µm give essentially the same value. Surface-area calculations, assuming spherical particles and no porosity, give a smaller area to the conventional product.
