Low Froude Number (Fr) theory* predicts that stably-stratified fl& around a terrain obstacle will divide into a lower layer passing essentially horizontally around the obstacle and an upper layer passing essentially over the obstacle. The prediction was formulated by Sheppard (1956) and Drazin (1961) and confirmed experimentally in the towing tank model d experiments of Hunt et a1 (1978) and the atmospheric full scale experiments of the US EPA Complex Terrain Model Development Program (1982- 1985). The US EPA Complex Terrain Dispersion Model, currently under development, employs the layering principle with the flow in each layer calculated independently by potential flow (PF) theory after the layer thicknesses are established according to a simple function of Fr, i.e., Hc /H = 1 - Fr where Hc is the dividing streamline freight and E is the obstacle height. Use of PF theory in the CTDM is attractive because numerical solutions can be obtained simply and economically, as compared to lengthy Navier-Stokes (N-S) solutions, but realism is sacrificed in creating a surface of discontinuity between the tm layers and eliminating the effects of shear and gravity in each layer.

The Arkansas Novaculite of Devonian and Mississippian age is the most distinctive formation in the central Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas from the standpoint of both topography and lithology. The formation typically forms precipitous, narrow ridges (hogbacks) which reflect the steepness of dip and the resistance and thickness of the rock units. The Arkansas Novaculite varies from less than 200 feet thick in the north to locally over 800 feet thick in the south and outcrops over an east-west distance of 360 km (200 miles) in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Most of the rocks of the formation are highly siliceous with novaculite predominating, and lesser quantities of chert, siliceous shale, conglomerate and rarely sandstone. Novaculite is commonly defined as a homogeneous mostly white rock, translucent on thin edges with a dull to waxy luster and composed almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The word novaculite comes from the Latin word novacula, meaning razor hone. This term was first used by Richard Kirwan in his mineralogy text of 1784. The origin of novaculite remains controversial but we believe it was a primary silica derived mostly from the alteration of submarine volcanic-rich materials, with numerous fine biogenic components and some minor clastics (derived mostly from foreland facies via turbidity currents) and deposited as an amorphous siliceous ooze in the deep Ouachita trough. It was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz during diagenesis by the compaction of the overlying rocks and the intense Late Paleozoic Ouachita Mountain tectonism. In the central and southern portions of the region three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division predominantly of light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive often calcareous novaculite. In the northern exposures the formation is thinner and contains more black chert and shale, chert-shale conglom¬erate, sandstone and less novaculite. The massive novaculite of the Upper and Lower Divisions is a source of high purity silica (99+%). Indians were the first to use novaculite. They made their various tools and hunting implements from the weathered broken rock until they learned the quarrying techniques. The first white men in the area recognized the use of novaculite for sharpening their tools and knives: previously whetstones were obtained in small quantities from Europe. To this day whetstone is quarried mostly in areas which the Indians and possibly the Spanish previously worked. Some of the current mining practices have changed very little from those of the early quarryman. In areas where the novaculite of the Upper Division is poorly cemented, this friable tripolitic material has found applications in such uses as an abrasive, as a filler or extender in paints, plastics and other purposes. Some of the dense novaculite is suitable as a filler in fire bricks and also in plastics. Because some of it has the tendency to decrepitate when heated not all novaculite can be used for these applications. Several quarry operators are crushing novaculite for road, concrete, and other aggregate. This use was formerly rather limited due to the abrasiveness of the novaculite on crushing and screening equipment. Further potential uses of novaculite are speculative but include application of high purity silica in the production of silicon metal for solar cells, seed or "growing", and fusing quartz for electronics.

The central Florida phosphate industry is not a recent development. The first phosphate mining occurred in approximately 1888 (1). Many of the original mining companies were "wildcat" operations operated with rapid phosphate extraction as the sole purpose and no long-term commitment to development. Many of the early pioneers were ill-equipped to mine phosphate at either a practical or economical level; as a result many of these early companies "folded" after only a brief period of operation. However, as these early companies went out of business, several large companies developed, expanded their mining territories bought up the folding companies and by 1903 (little more than 10 years after the first mines were started), approximately 37 of the original 60 mines were control- led by three major companies (1). In the early period, mining reclamation was nonexistent. The mined out areas were left to revegetate and reclaim "naturally" over the period of many years. Reclamation practices were only started relatively recently and the various reclamation techniques developed and used in the past have continued to be employed with varying degrees of success through the present time. The reclamation techniques used in the past and currently include land and lakes restoration, sand tailing reclamation, slime ponds reclamation and overburden fill.

"INTRODUCTION Adoption of rubber-tire shuttle cars underground in conjunction with mobile coal-loading machines has introduced new problems in the control of dust on mine roadways. Where this type of loading and transportation is used, development and extraction are generally rapid, with the result that much coal is spilled from the shuttle cars during normal operation, Coal in the roadways from this source and from sloughing of the ribs is ground to fine dust by the wheels of the 'shuttle cars and by the treads of the loading and mining machines. The coal dust usually is somewhat contaminated by pulverized rock, and the mixture could not be loaded with the run-of-mine coal without undue contamination of the product even if it were cleaned up promptly.The presence of large quantities of fine, loose dust, which is constantly stirred up and kept in suspension in air by the traffic, constitutes a grave explosion hazard, reduces visibility along the roadways, and is physiologically harmful to the workmen who breathe the air. From the operating standpoint the loose material is undesirable along the roadways because it provides poor traction for the trucks and thereby increases wear and power consumption. The dust-explosion hazard could be eliminated or reduced by frequent application of sufficient rock dust on the roadbed; but this would not remedy the other difficulties, and in fact it might intensify them. Where practicable, the most direct and effective safety measure is to clean up and remove promptly all dust that forms and settles on the roadways. Unfortunately, in many cases this procedure is not feasible. A third Suggested remedy is to prevent dispersal of the dust into the air and to promote its consolidation on the floor by wetting the dust particles.During the past few years several mines have used calcium chloride on shuttle-car roadways to allay the dust thereon. When exposed to the' humid atmosphere of the mine this salt absorbs Moisture from the air and deliquesces, and in this way wets the dust on the floor of the roadway. In a survey conducted in coal mines in southern West Virginia and in eastern Kentucky where calcium chloride has been in use, somewhat conflicting re- ports were received regarding the merits of the application, and several operators have abandoned the practice either because of actual or assumed disadvantages. The purpose of the study described in this report was to collect and correlate evidence and, on the basis of experimental data obtained in the field and in laboratory tests, to present a clearer picture of the factors involved in the allaying of dust by use of salts."

Research methods to develop an economic model for the determination of regional mineral advantage are discussed. An industrial complex conceptual framework is used to study potential mineral resource outputs of Kansas. A procedure for making a comparative cost analysis of potential outputs for a Kansas-based industrial complex is outlined and illustrated. Methods for estimating aggregate demand and for developing an input-output matrix for a hypothetical limestone complex are explained. The input-output matrix is expressed in physical units. A computer algorithm for converting physical production data and input cost data into total cost per unit of output information is briefly explained and flowcharted. Limitations and usefulness of this procedure in determining regional advantages are surveyed.

Mineral resource development activities impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers, to families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of corporate social responsibility life-of-mine planning considers that mining activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way for the entire life of the mine (ie from exploration to decommissioning and closure). In this context, the health impacts of mining extend throughout the life of the community from worker injury and chronic exposure to communicable and non-communicable causes of illness, through to family and community health and well-being. At the inaugural Life-of-Mine conference in July 2012, the authors proposed the life-of-mine in the life-of-community (LOMLOC) matrix as a framework for understanding issues at the interface between resource extraction operations and the surrounding environment.This paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining companies with American operations in Canada, Colombia and Brazil. These corporate approaches to public health management are mapped to the LOMLOC matrix to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments. This paper demonstrates experimental studies on bioprocessing of different waste streams. In Part I of this paper three tailings from mining industry were bioleached with mixed acidophilic culture in order to solubilize valuable metals, like copper, nickel, zinc and manganese to leaching liquor. Bioleaching resulted in > 70 %, > 85 %, 100 % and > 70 % leaching yields for Cu, Ni, Zn and Mn, respectively. However, contaminants like arsenic and chromium were not leached efficiently and they will cause challenges in residual solids and sometimes also in metal recovery from leaching liquor. Bioleaching resulted in 99 % leaching yield for copper. Part II demonstrates mine water treatment and also gold recovery from process liquids with biosorption method. The novelty of biosorption was finding that certain fungal species were able to be cultivated to self-immobilized systems, which are easier to operate than traditional suspended biomass methods. Biosorption resulted in more than 90 % removal for all contaminants, but was also seen to be gold selective.

This paper presents the main features of coal mining in Japan, as determined by the author while attending the International Coal Conference in October of 1963. The general economy of the country is considered, and the requirements for coking coal are outlined. Statistics and comments on production and consumption are then given, with accompanying cost figures, and the characteristics of Japanese coal mining are compared with those of Canada. Mining methods and underground transportation are covered, with emphasis on undersea mining. Finally, a description is given of a visit to the Miike colliery, the largest in Japan. I T was my privilege to attend the International Coal Conference held in Tokyo in October, 1963, to meet many prominent members of the Japan Coal Association and to visit one of the major coal fields. This report describes the results of Bureau of Mines laboratory and preliminary field tests on a rock bolt of helical shape. The flexible construction allows the bolt to maintain a more stable load level than is possible with a straight bolt. Bolt load changes resulting from anchor slippage, blasting shock, or changes in mine geometry with mining advance are minimized. Preliminary field tests were performed at the Kaiser Steel York Canyon mine where the load changes of straight and helical bolts were measured using a vibrating-wire load gage. The field tests were performed to establish the viability of the concept of a helical bolt. The practical usefulness in terms of performance and economics remains to be shown. The change in bolt load for the flexible bolts was one-third that for the straight bolts. There were no malfunctions of the gage, and the bolts maintained a more uniform load than the straight bolts used as controls.

Case studies are presented in this paper to illustrate the usefulness and applicability of using conditional simulation in under- ground coal mine planning. Conditional simulation is a technique developed in the last five years that allows the building of a simulated ore body (or coal deposit) model. Construction and validation of the simulated model is described in order to show how well the model reproduces the essential characteristics of the deposit. In the model, the thickness, ash, and sulfur content are known everywhere in the deposit and each variable has the same mean, variance, and spatial variability (variogram) as that variable has in the real deposit. Use of the simulated deposit in the design of drilling strategy for long range mine planning is demonstrated in me case study. Determining the potential of short term production scheduling to reduce the fluctuations of sulfur in run of mine coal is described in the second case study.

The Mitchell and Berea sands were cored and logged in Fred Link well K-l, Lower Newport field, Washington County, Ohio. Core and reservoir fluid analyses and available field data were studied to determine if these sands could be successfully waterflooded. The results of the study indicate that there is insufficient oil in place to form an oilbank in either the western Mitchell pool or the Berea sand, and that no commercial recovery of oil by waterflooding can be obtained in these reservoirs.

An investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the relationship between freespace and ignition probability for borehole shots. A series of experiments was concluded which covered six freespace conditions for a pemissible explosive in a 3/4-inch borehole and encompassed some 700 shots. The results were analyzed statistically. From the analysis of variance, it was concluded that the freespace means were different and that this conclusion is not impaired by possible differences in the explosives used. Within the limitation of this experiment, a definite relationship was found between the freespace and the ignition probability. Specifically, the incendivity increases with increased freespace up to a maximum; beyond this maximum there is some indication of decreasing incendivity. Further investigations are in progress to establish whether the effects of freespace on ignition probability reported here are applicable to the large test gallery, INTRODUCTION A borehole loaded with an explosive charge is a common feature of the routine gallery tests for determining the permissibility of coal-mine explosives, of Experimental Coal-Mine shots, and of the small steel cannon shots used in connection with certain research programs on the ignition of firedamp (6, 10).6/ The question of the interrelationship of freespace, weight of charge, and ignition probability of the methane-air atmosphere has been raised

Evidence has accumulated indicating that cultural change toward safer workplace behaviors is beginning to occur systematically in the coal industry. Through a range of programmatic mining company successes, enforcement and litigative actions, economic responses to competition, and integrated efforts by federal and state agencies, a broader participation of safety and training professionals is being achieved to address prioritized workplace problems at mines. Small steps in workplace-related improvements have been realized already, but the trends in industry safety statistics, coupled with focused programmatic initiatives, indicate that more definitive and systematic steps are occurring to improve safe behavior in the workplace routinely.

The Deserado Mine of Western Fuels- Utah Inc. installed a micro-computer based mine wide monitoring and control system for mine environment, beltway fire protection, belt operating parameters, and equipment power utilization. The Colorado School of Mines was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to document, evaluate, and report on the system design, procurement, installation, tests, and operation. This paper results from that project. The paper compares planned activities such as installation and start up, procurement contract specifications and system layout with actual performance to develop recommendations for future installations by mine operators.

Solvent extraction of iron from zinc refinery liquors has been investigated before, mainly on the MEHPA / HC1 stripping combination. Leakage of chloride into the zinc electrolyte and the costs of handling the ferric chloride eluate have prevented this option from being adopted. This work explores the stripping of the ferric loaded organic phase with nitric acid to take advantage of the possibility of regenerating up to 6N nitric acid, and clean spheroidal hematite production by autoclave treatment of ferric nitrate solution. The work was carried out with DEHPA (di 2-ethyl-hexyl phosphoric acid) in kerosine. Degradation testing proved the DEHPA to be very stable, when exposed to nitric acid solutions up to 6N and temperatures up to 70" C over a period of five days. Ferric iron was removed completely froma synthetic hot acid leach liquor, irrespective of the DEHPA concentration. Stripping the ferric turned out to be the problematic step. Although the stripping efficiency was considerable better at 50 than at 20° C, it decreased with increasing DEHPA/Fe ration in the organic phase. Eluates of no more than 5-10 g/l ferric nitrate were produced. surprisingly, nitric acid was found to be a less efficient stripping agent than sulphuric at equivalent normality and its efficacy levelled off above 4N. It was concluded that DEHPA does not appear to be the S.X. reagent to take advantage of the low cost autoclave decomposition of ferric nitrate opportunity in zinc hydrometallurgy and that another S.X. reagent, also resistant to nitric acid, but based on weaker compound formation is needed.

The Bureau of Mines developed methods for fragmenting oil shale formations with chemical explosives to prepare oil shale for in situ retorting and to evaluate the extent of fragmentation by various methods. A combination of three methods of explosive fracturing was used: (1) The displacement and detonation of a liquid chemical explosive in a natural fracture system; (2) the use of 60-pct dynamite to relieve stress conditions of the rock around the wellbore; and (3) the use of pelletized TNT in a series of wellbore shots to fragment the oil shale. An attempt was made to seal or grout around the fragmented oil shale by drilling 67 holes and displacing approximately 200 bbl of neat cement in the fracture system to aid in evaluating the fragmented zone, Seven methods were used to evaluate the fragmented zone. The primary evaluation method was the recording of seismic waves to delineate the fragmented zone with results based on arrival time, amplitude, and record quality. The data from the seismic measurements indicated the extensively fragmented zone was approximately 95 ft in diameter and 70 ft thick. Results of the remaining methods of evaluating fractures--including air-flow tests, coring of the expected fragmented zone, elevation measurements to indicate overburden crowning, and surveys with high-speed camera, impression packer, and down-hole camera--agreed with and supported the data from seismic measurements. Further field application of explosive fracturing and evaluation methods is needed to determine when a zone of oil shale is effectively fragmented for efficient in situ retorting.

In this paper we describe the leaching characteristics of pure gold in thiosulfate solutions that contain a known chelator; meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). The interfacial and chemical characterisation of the system was accomplished using both electrochemical methods and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis after pure gold samples were exposed to solutions composed of 65 mM Na2S2O3, 1 mM NaOH and a range of DMSA concentrations. In the absence of DMSA, cyclic voltammetry revealed the onset of thiosulfate mediated gold dissolution, the degree of which was reduced at more positive potentials due to the formation of oxidised thiosulfate products on the gold surface. The addition of small amounts of DMSA (<10 ¦M) to the electrolyte resulted in minor changes to the voltammograms indicating a subtle interaction of the additive with the gold surface that may improve leaching. However, at higher concentrations of DMSA (up to 100 ¦M), electrochemical evidence suggests the formation of new oxidation products in solution as well as the formation of more compact monolayers of DMSA on the surface, which contribute to partial repassivation of the surface. The influence of DMSA on thiosulfate leaching of pure gold electrodes at the open circuit potential for a period of 90 minutes was tested and the corresponding gold leaching performance evaluated with ICP-MS analysis. Our data shows that small amounts of DMSA (1 ¦M) doubled the amount of total gold in solution when compared to the same study in the absence of the additive. However, higher concentrations (5 ¦M DMSA) reduced the overall amount of dissolved gold. These results may point to a mechanism where small amounts of DMSA improve leaching by adsorbing onto the surface in a highly defective monolayer that partially blocks or disrupts the formation of passivation products caused by thiosulfate oxidation, but excess DMSA can limit the leaching process itself by forming too coherent a monolayer on the gold surface.CITATION:Uceda, M, Choi, Y, Shepherd, J L and Guerra, E, 2013. Commercial tellurium commonly contains heavy base-metal impurities such as lead, copper, iron, etc., as well as selenium and oxygen. The base metals may be removed by vacuum distillation or by zone melting. Vacuum distillation is a convenient method for treating moderate quantities ( 100 kg.) for the production of a material having a total content of heavy metals in the 10-30 ppm range. By zone melting, it is possible to lower all the heavy metal impurities tm below the limits of spectrographie detection. Neither vacuum distillation nor zone melting is effective for the removal of selenium, but treatment of molten tellurium with hydrogen converts selenium to hydrogen selenide. This procedure is too slow to be considered except as an adjunct to zone melting. In the course of air-melting, many of the more easily oxidized impurities form a dross and may thus be readily removed. Substantial refinement with respect to iron, tin, chromium, aluminum, sodium, silicon, magnesium, calcium and manganese can be achieved in this way. Although tellurium can be electrodeposited from either acid or alkaline solutions of the dioxide, various factors militate against successful electro-refining, amongst which may be mentioned the brittleness of cast tellurium anodes and the tendency for the metal to be deposited in dendritic form, even at low current densities.

"IntroductionThe Chairman, in his speech to this body last year in Montreal, stated that the Dominion Coal Board looked to and depended upon the Bureau of Statistics for statistical material, and the Bureau does collect and publish monthly and annual data on coal. It may therefore be asked why an officer of the Dominion Coal Board should prepare and give a talk on statistics.I would explain that it has been our experience in the Board that, since the supply and consumption of coal in Canada is subject to a seasonal ebb and flow, it can be more profitably studied on the basis of a twelve-month period ending on March 31st than of a calendar year, since the end of March does represent a fairly stable end point in this ebb and flow. The figures are not prepared or published by the Bureau on that basis and it has therefore been thought that a presentation on this fiscal-year period would be of interest. The Bureau of Statistics has agreed that this may be valuable and all the data here presented are based on the reports secured from various sources by the Mining, Metallurgical and Chemical Division, Dominion Bureau of Statistics. The only contribution by either myself or the staff of the Dominion Coal Board has been the tabulation in a different twelve month period, and the comments upon the picture presented.It should be noted that the data for the month of March, 1950, are not available in all cases and consequently the figures for that year contain an estimate for this month."

The Bureau of Mines designed and constructed a series of calibration models for geophysical borehole logging. A nominal hole diameter of 3 inches was selected as representative of typical core holes drilled for mining and engineering purposes, although additional hole diameters of 2, 5, and 8 inches are provided in one of the models for determination of empirical correction factors for variations in hole diameter. The physical properties of the models were determined by laboratory analyses of drill core samples and evaluated statistically for reliability. This report outlines the location of the models, elements of design and construction, and results of the laboratory tests. The models are available at the Denver Federal Center, Denver, Colo., for use by Government agencies and private industry to calibrate logging equipment for measurements of density, sonic velocity, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity.
