At its simplest, the classification and characterisation of an orebody is a matter of Where, What and When. Where and with what spatial resolution are measurements taken, What properties are measured, and When are the data acquired, processed, and delivered to create the most value. This paper delves into how existing and near-term advances in measurement technologies, field automation, and whole-system-digitisation are combining to open new routes for mine and exploration productivity improvement. Commencing when the initial exploration hole is dug, the advancement in deployment of survey technology—from expert-operated, to driller-operated, to driller-integrated—is used to demonstrate a template for adoption of higher technology measurements. We then introduce and discuss the multi-use measurement as offering outsized returns from a single measurement run, highlighting two new technologies that acquire rock strength while drilling and downhole assay data as examples. For rock strength, we highlight a novel approach to determining Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) while drilling, its relationship to and advantages over Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE), and how it offers utility to multiple downstream processes. For downhole assay, we detail how a back-tophysics approach to Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) analysis offers significant advantages over other measurement methods and earlier implementations of PFTNA, generating a rich data set that can significantly extend and improve the information on which mining decisions are made. Finally, we discuss the possibilities enabled via optimising data delivery, collection, and curation— noting a fundamental limitation of historical systems and exploring the possibilities that will be unlocked by soon-to-market solutions that better enable Orebody Characterisation data to (virtually) move in space and time with rock material post-blasting. Ultimately, the value of optimising the Where, What, and When from point of measurement to the moment it generates maximum value will create greater life-of-asset production for a lower cost and energy input.

The treatment of preg-robbing gold ores has always been a technical challenge in the gold industry. Early solutions included removal of preg-robbing carbonaceous material by flotation, the addition of kerosene to æblindÆ/passivate the surface of the preg-robbing component, and the most effective of all options, roasting the ore. Unfortunately gold ores have become more complex and roasting has environmental challenges, so other methods of treatment have had to be found. This paper will review methods of characterising preg-robbing gold ores, method of treatment and cite examples of actual application in the industry.CITATION:Dunne, R, Staunton, W P and Afewu, K, 2013. It is appropriate that this opening session of HAZPAC '91 and Randol Gold Forum CAIRNS '91 should address the question of what the two industries can learn from each other. The panel is made up of members with experience in both industry. Several are experts on managing both hazardous waste and the mine/mineral processing environment. There is a marked difference in the regulatory needs with respect to treating and disposing of mining and mineral processing wastes, and "hazardous" or industrial waste materials. The topic of this paper is on the things that the two industries have in common: Many of the processes and technologies that are being used or are currently being developed for treatment of hazardous waste are the same or similar to the processes that have been used for decades or k,nger in the mineral processing industry. Hazardous waste treatment and remediation of contaminated solid and/or groundwater is a relatively new industry. Many of the practitioners in this new industry are relatively inexperienced in most of the "new" technologies that are being applied or developed.

THE liability for damages to the surface caused by subsidence is an ever present threat in all underground mining. In ordinary lode mining, this threat rarely materializes into an action, due to the method of mining metaliferous ores, the dip of the veins, and the nature of the ground itself. In the mining of coal, however, this threat is very real. The coal frequently lies close to the surface, in beds underlying large areas of land the surface of which is suitable for agricultural or urban development. Furthermore, the coal is generally mined by the "room and pillar " method and when the pillars of coal are removed, the subjacent support is destroyed. This question of the duty of surface support has now become a very live one in Colorado. What was waste prairie land a few years .ago, has become valuable agricultural land dotted here and there with growing towns. Frequent references will be made here to Colorado conditions and adjudicated cases, but those conditions and cases and the conclusions to be drawn therefrom are equally applicable to all coal-mining states. Briefly stated, the question is "Does the owner of the substrata or underlying mineral, owe any duty of surface support to the owner of the superjacent strata or surface?" There is no absolute duty of support owed by the mineral owner and this assertion is made with full knowledge of numerous expressions to the contrary by courts of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and other coal-mining states. Whether or not any duty exists depends upon the circumstances surrounding each case, and since in the nature of things those circumstances are rarely identical, there can be no absolute rule.

Merriam Webster?s Collegiate Dictio­nary (1996) defines team as ?a number of persons associated together in work or activity? and teamwork as ?work done by several associates with each doing a part, but all subordinating personal prominence to the efficiency of the whole? (page 1209). According to Dr. Geller, author of Building Successful Safety Teams: Together Everyone Achieves More (1998), a team of people working together for industrial safety consists of as few as two people or as many as fifteen who have complementary skills, assignments, or abilities for completing a particular task. Effective teams have members who share a common mission and relevant goals, and they share specific methods to reach their goals and accomplish their mission. They also have an evaluation system in place for holding themselves mutually accountable for goal-directed responsibilities.

550 load tests of up to 150 MN have been completed on driven and bored piles using the Osterberg Load Cell. Because the test measures side shear and end bearing separately, much can be learned about the forces on the pile as it is loaded to ultimate capacity. At working loads side shear almost always far exceeds end bearing, with the distribution of shear and bearing greatly affected by disturbance occurring during drilling operations. Since much less movement is required to mobilize side shear than end bearing, most of the bearing develops after the working load is exceeded. Thus with insufficient bottom cleaning, safety against excessive settlement can be considerably reduced. Improved methods of drilling, hole cleaning, rebar cage installation and concrete placement are discussed. For rock socket piles it has been found that the ultimate test load far exceeds the working loads in most cases. This is almost always due to greater penetration into the rock than is required for adequate safety against excessive settlement. Factors affecting rock socket capacity are discussed. Increase of side shear and ultimate capacity with time is discussed. Case histories for driven and bored piles in soil and rock sockets are described.

The key functions of project evaluation are to assess potential profitability and to develop an effective operational design. For mining projects, design aspects include mining methodology, ore treatment methodology and production rates. All of these characteristics impact on project economics and overall value. Resource models, which form the ultimate basis of project evaluation, typically consist of tonnes above cut-off, grade above cut-off and the spatial distribution (connectivity) of tonnes/grade above cut-off, for one or more variables. Dilution, ore loss and metallurgical recovery are all modifying factors applied to the resource model during evaluation and determination of profitability. A key issue is: how is the value determined? In addition to traditional combination of in situ tonnes/grade, the following merit serious consideration: the concentration of deleterious elements, throughput rates, mining/processing costs and û importantly û metallurgical recovery. Geometallurgy is an emerging field targeted at integrating these issues by identifying either direct measures or proxies for throughput (hardness, grindability), recovery (liberation, mineral shape/texture, etc) and concentrate quality from easily collected macro-, meso- and microscopic data. These ægeometallurgical variablesÆ drive project costs and revenues in a fundamental way. For geometallurgical characterisation to have a real impact on business design, it must enable improved mine planning. When creating spatial estimates for such variables, it is preferable to find proxies that can be measured as close to the intact rock mass as possible. However, spatial estimation of proxies for geometallurgical properties and responses is complex and requires special consideration. Unlike grades, both proxies and absolute measures of geometallurgical variables are not necessarily linear or additive and therefore require very careful geostatistical consideration. In some cases, models must predict extreme values of geometallurgical attributes rather than averages. Incorrect characterisation of metallurgical recovery/throughput can (and has) led to misspecification of the scale of projects, and thus can be seriously value destructive. Aspects of geometallurgy have long been important in iron, bauxite, manganese and coal deposits and are increasingly on the radar for base and precious metal miners. However, as more metallurgically complex deposits are developed and mining of large-scale, low-grade deposits becomes more commonplace, the importance of characterising the metallurgical response in order to generate properly optimised projects will rapidly increase. It is possible that in many ætraditionalÆ (ie grades and tonnes) reserve models, the variables that drive the project are missing!

Rock stress measurement is cast in the more general context of the determination of boundary conditions for rock engineering. A study on the effect of elastic anisotropy on underground excavations reveals that this effect is actually controlled by the imposed boundary conditions. Applications to tunneling and to the Underground Research Laboratory (URL), Canada, exemplify a procedure for boundary condition estimation formerly developed by the authors. The procedure displayed fast convergence despite the complex geometry, and the high degree of non-linearity of the models. In the URL application, the 3-D model was able to completely reproduce the complex measured stress pattern, and the 90° rotation of the principal in situ stresses with depth. In order to reliably estimate the boundary conditions reproducing the current in situ state of stress, response measurements of the rock mass to current disturbances are necessary as input data. La mesure des contraintes in situ tombe dans le domaine général de la détermination des conditions aux limites pour les problèmes de mécanique des roches. Une étude sur le rôle de l’anisotropie élastique sur les excavations souterraines montre que ce rôle est contrôlé par les conditions aux limites qui sont imposées. L’application aux tunnels et au Laboratoire Souterrain de Recherche (URL) au Canada, nous permet de présenter une méthode de détermination des conditions aux limites. La méthode converge rapidement bien que le géométrie soit complexe et que le problème soit non-linéaire. Pour le URL, le modèle 3D est capable de reproduire la distribution des contraintes qui ont été mesurées ainsi que la rotation de 90 degrés des contraintes in situ avec la profondeur. Afin de déterminer avec précision les conditions aux limites responsables pour la distribution actuelle des contraintes, la réponse du massif rocheux doit être connue et mesurée. In der Felsentechnik sind die Spannungsmessungen in Gestein an die Bestimmung der Randbedingungen gebunden. Eine Studie legt dar, dass der Effekt elastischer Anisotropie in unterirdischen Aushoehlungen von den Randbedingungen kontrolliert ist. Eine von den Authoren entwickelte Methode zur Bestimmung der Randbedingungen wird an Beispielen im Tunnelbau und im Underground Research Laboratory (URL) in Kanada illustriert. Auch bei komplexer Geometrie und einem hohen Grad an Nicht-Linearitaet zeigt diese Methode ein schnelles Konvergenzverhalten. Ein 3D-Model und dessen 90° Drehung der lokalen Hauptspannungen mit der Tiefe, kann bei einer URL Anwendung vollstaendig reproduziert werden. Um mit dieser Methode die Randbedingungen zuverlaessig abschaetzen zu koennen, werden der gegenwaertige lokale Spannungszustand sowie die Antwort des Gesteins und die resultierenden Stoerungen als Eingabedaten benoetigt.

Context ? Community engagement has become an increasingly significant and challenging part of mineral exploration and mine development; indeed, opposition from communities proximate to a proposed mine site has been known to derail technologically- and financially-sound projects. ? These cases suggest that mining firms need to better understand how to engage constructively with local communities in the pursuit of their claims. ? While a range of publications exist promoting various community engagement strategies, these recommendations, when viewed as a whole, are disjointed and largely untested in real development contexts. Aims of Presentation 1. Synthesize industry, NGO, government and academic publications focused on community engagement best practice in order to highlight those practices that are most commonly recommended. 2. Review the (Canadian) mining industry?s experience with some of these strategies based on existing case material in order to identify the extent to which commonly prescribed strategies are used and validated in practice.

"The challenge of ""ore bodies getting steadily harder and lower in grade"" was brought to light during the first oil crisis in the 70's. Shortly afterwards, HPGRs appeared on the scene with the promise of saving energy. This combined with developments in wear protection for the rolls ushered in a period of trade-off studies that considered the HPGR as an option to improve project economics or to even make projects feasible at all.Since then, applications of HPGRs at Cerro Verde (Freeport), PTFI Grasberg (Freeport), Mogalakwena (Anglo Platinum), Tarkwa (Goldfields), Boddington (Newmont), Penasquito (Goldcorp), and others have contributed to the creation of a formidable basket of operating experience. Collected through years of successful operation, this information has been used to validate design criteria, scale-up factors and establishing a clearer picture of what ""to do"" and what ""not to do"".This paper compares results from various mining operations using HPGRs in their processing plants. Some of the lessons learnt in different operating environments are reviewed in order to support proper implementation and operation of HPGR's. Some of the development programs that have been initiated to improve wear life of the tyres and to reduce overall operating costs are reviewed. It is timely to summarize today’s experience and analyse its implications for existing and new operations"

In Canada and other countries, legislation dealing with accurate factual disclosure for mining projects is being expanded to include more metallurgical design information. Grinding characteristics, metallurgical recovery of contained metal and environmental hazards associated with tailings disposal will be part of the Canadian package. This paper will examine only that portion of the plant design standard practice that relates to grinding ? in SAG mills and ball mills that grind ore from as received crushed material to final ground product that is fed to downstream plant recovery processes. Since grinding plants represent a significant portion of the overall concentrator cost, accountability in grinding design should no longer be left to chance, opinion, or hidden proprietary information. This is the 21st century. It is reasonable to expect that a factual basis will be needed so that a Qualified Person (QP) reviewing the grinding mill design can understand it. That will also involve how many and what quality of samples are taken to define the characteristics of the deposit, the accuracy of the tests used to measure ore hardness and the method by which the dimensions and power of the mills are determined. If these criteria are not met, the QP may have no choice but to call attention to the lack of convincing information regarding the grinding mill design for the project. At the same time clients are expected to demand getting the correct design information at a cheaper price, results in a more timely way, and accurate design to the point where the risk of tonnage shortfalls are reduced or eliminated. Tables will be presented to show how this can be done to current standards using existing technologies. At the same time it is acknowledged that current standards are ill-defined and that to achieve consensus among those involved in SAG mill design work, it may require that a consortium funded project be set up to establish what tests and methods for grinding design are suitable to meet the new standards for metallurgical disclosure. By running parallel design methods on several major projects over a period of 5 years, the process of how to design grinding circuits will be better understood because the projects will start at the design stage, include procurement of the mills and will end with a benchmark test on the plant. Selecting the samples and the best schedule for doing test work on core samples submitted and mill design, will be discussed in this paper. The issue of completing the grinding design in time for early procurement decisions is on the critical path for most major projects. Discussions between mining engineers, geologists and process engineers are needed early in the development cycle, at the scoping study level (SS), preliminary engineering assessment (PEA), prefeasibility study (PFS), and at the feasibility study stage (FS), to ensure that proper planning for design sample selection is done. Using adequate sampling and testing methods in a timely way allows early procurement of the grinding mills and minimizes project risk.

WHAT does management expect of W and from an engineer? First and foremost, it expects that he should become, and therefore should fit himself in every way to be, a part of management so that he may assume as much and as many of the responsibilities of management as his ability and the opportunities of the job permit. Let me make clear at the start that the profession of pure, technical engineering offers but limited opportunities at the top levels because of the inherent organization of engineering work. The line of succession to top jobs may be likened to a cone with a broad base and an extremely sharp point. Consider any oil company, large or small, or any operating function of that company, and you will find few top engineering jobs in the organization. This is true by the nature of the work handled. There will be a few district engineers depending on the spread of operations, a chief petroleum and production engineer, perhaps a few research engineers, possibly some technical executive assistants, and that is usually all. The road to these jobs is a long one and the competition is tough. The larger the organization the greater the opportunity, but always the ratio of engineers to top engineering jobs is only a small one.

"It is vitally important in projects where the cut-off grade is low that there is no contamination during the sampling and sample preparation process, both in the ore and the waste zones. Failure to identify contamination could have devastating financial consequences for a project. The use of a variety of blank types is essential for ensuring that contamination is identified and eliminated at every stage of the sampling and sample preparation process. This paper examines an instance where an effective assay quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) program was able to identify and eliminate a source of significant multi-element contamination in the prefeasibility stages of an open pit project. This examination includes the: evidence for contamination findings of the investigation process of resolving the problem and correcting the data evidence for both addition of metal and dilution through contamination potential impact on the project had this issue not been dealt with. It was through the use of a combination of blank types that the QA/QC process at Mount Isa Mines (MIM) identified a contamination issue at the first crushing phase of sample preparation. Identification of the contamination allowed MIM to stop assaying activities and work with the laboratory to correct the problem. The sampling program could then be continued with no further doubts about the sample preparation process. Contaminated samples were resampled from retained core. With the continuous monitoring provided by the blanks program, it was possible to ensure that only clean results went into the resource modelling data set. CITATION:Webb, J, 2014. Prior to mining, all rocks contained in a mineral deposit must be placed in one of several categories known as ore types. Each ore type describes a different way that the rock will behave in processing. The ore type determines which process stream a particular mined unit will be sent to, sets expectations for process engineers and metallurgists, and forms the basis for recovery predictions and production estimates. At first, ore types are assigned mainly by geologists based on visible geological criteria (dominant ore mineralogy, estimated grade, rock type, alteration type). As metallurgical tests are carried out and process data accumulate, the resulting criteria may be factored into the ore typing process, typically as assays and recoverable metal using the relevant process(es). Other variables may also be incorporated into ore typing at operations if they are particularly important, such as grindability, preg-robbing, gangue reagent consumption, and the presence of especially deleterious minerals such as talc or smectite. The mine operation department may also redefine ore types and/or process destinations based on economic criteria. A “best” ore type is designated that (in theory) best describes how the rock will behave in processing. Codes representing this ore type are entered into the drill hole database, then interpreted on cross sections and level plans, and finally added to the block model. Ore types are iteratively reexamined and adjusted over the life of a project. Major difficulties in effective ore typing are (1) lack of communication between geologists and metallurgists, (2) the imprecision inherent in imposing clean categories on messy natural systems without discrete divisions, (3) the need for ore types to provide useful information for a wide range of processes, (4) difficulties in scaling up laboratory test results to mine production, and (5) conflict among geological, metallurgical, and economic criteria for ore typing.
