ONE of the interesting questions in the understanding of the reaction of iron with oxygen is the kinetics and the mechanism of the crystal structure changes occurring in the formation and breakdown of the oxide film. In a recent work' the electron diffraction method was applied to the study of the solid phase reactions occurring internally in the oxide film on iron above 570°C and under vacuum conditions. The higher oxides which form under oxidizing conditions are reduced internally by the diffusion of iron into the oxide leaving the bulk of the oxide FeO (wüstite). This paper will ask and consider three questions. These are: (1) What is the nature of the depressed transformation temperature for the Fe3O4 + Fe ? 4Fe0 reaction in very thin oxide films?; (2) What is the mechanism of the forward transformation of Fe3O4 to FeO at or near 570°C?; and (3) What is the nature and mechanism of the slow reverse transformation of FeO to Fe3O4 and Fe below 570°C?. The composition of the oxide as well as its electrical, magnetic, mechanical, and chemical properties depends upon the kinetics of these reactions. Literature Survey The composition of the oxide film on pure iron at temperatures up to 570°C has been studied extensively by the electron diffraction method. Nelson,' Jackson and Quarrell,3 and Gulbransen and Hick-man4 have shown that Fe3O4 and a-Fe2O8 are formed in the temperature range of 225" to 570°C, while y-Fe,O, is most likely formed below 225°C for long oxidation times. In very thin films FeO (wüstite) is found to form at temperatures as low as 400°C, and its existence depends essentially upon the extent of initial oxidation. FeO is not found in the formation of thick films below 570°C. On the other hand X-ray5 and micrographic8 studies show that Fe3O4 may exist as the main com-ponent in thick films up to 650°C, well above the equilibrium temperature for the reaction Fe3O4 + Fe ? 4FeO. The kinetics of the forward and reverse trans-formations of the reaction Fe3O4 + Fe ? 4FeO have not been studied in oxide films. However, analysis of the data of Gulbransen and Hickman4 on the heat-ing and cooling of iron oxide films of known thick-nesses in high vacua shows that the forward reac-tion proceeds rapidly even for a 4000 A film at temperatures of 575" to 600°C. The reverse reaction or decomposition of wüstite (FeO) occurs at tem-peratures below 450°C. Thus, there appears to be a slow process in the decomposition which is in marked contrast to the rapid forward reaction. The decomposition of a bulk sample of FeO free from the metal has been studied extensively by Chaudron, Benard and coworkers using the micro-graphic, X-ray diffraction, and thermomagnetic methods. Chaudron7,8 first observed that the de-composition of FeO (wüstite) below 570°C occurs by the reaction 4FeO ? Fe3O4 + Fe. Later work by Chaudron and Forestier5 showed that the rate of de-

Why and how the nuclear industry entered the electric power generation business is discussed in terms that nuclear energy was an undoubtedly additional energy resource and that it had promise of becoming a virtually inexhaustible generating power if breeder reactors could be devised. The growth of nuclear power, its total generation capacity, are related to the need of increasing energy requirements. The use of atomic energy for power generation will grow if it can compete economically with other fuels. The rate of growth, the time scale and direction of technical development is dependent on ore supplies. It is predicted that by 1980, 50% of all new power installations will be nuclear stations. INTRODUCTION Ten years ago, the nuclear industry was virtually unborn, the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 had just been signed, and peaceful applications of atomic power was little more than a phrase. Serious discussion of the practical application of nuclear energy to electric utility installations in the West was highly unlikely. The questions: Why and how did the nuclear industry enter the electric power generation business at all?; What is the predicted growth of nuclear power?; What technological changes do we predict?; How will the above changes affect the utilities? will in part be answered by this paper. WHY NUCLEAR POWER? The only justification for the West as for any other section of the country for atomic power is economics. Whatever energy source will provide the lowest generation cost will prevail; the only electric utilities which have shown an interest in nuclear power are those to whom it means lower generation costs. It is true that the Government sponsored the development of this technology long before there was any evidence of better economics; but a Government must take a very long-range view and it is the only type of organization that can afford to look more than twenty or thirty years into the future. The Government looked at projections such as shown in Fig. 1, which shows various rates of energy consumption, and matched these against estimates of fossil fuel resources. This showed that we will exhaust our low-cost fossil fuel supplies within 75 to 100 years and our total known fuel supplies within 150 to 200 years. The decision to invest in nuclear energy rested, therefore, on two arguments: a) It was undoubtedly an additional energy resource; and b) It has promise of becoming a virtually inex-haustable resource if breeder reactors could be devised if, while generating power, the reactors would produce more fissile materials than they consumed. This decision produced an unexpected bonus: nuclear power became competitive with fossil power much earlier than had been expected and, as shown in Fig. 2, forced the coal industry to take a hard look at its own position. I believe that the drop of coal prices shown here is the direct result of the entry of nuclear power into the energy supply business. At this point, it ought to be explained why and under what conditions nuclear power can be cheaper than fossil power. Fossil fuel cost to the utility is composed of two factors: a) Mining; and b) Transportation. As a result, the cost of fossil fuel to the utilities varies from 126, 106 Btu to 306, 106 Btu and higher. Nuclear energy is highly concentrated and the transportation factor becomes insignificant. At 5:30 p.m. a social hour was held for all RMCMI registrants on the lawn area south of the Gondola Lift House. This was followed by a western steak fry and dancing to the country western band, "The Cat's Night Out". MORNING SESSION Tuesday, June 29,1982 RMCMI golfers came out in force for a shot-gun start of the Championship Golf Tournament at Vail Municipal Golf Course which began its first session at 7:30 a.m. followed by a second at 1:15 p.m. The tournament was headed by William Carpender, chairman and his committee members Gary Bennewitz, Jr. and Gene Christmann. RMCMI members were treated to early morning rolls and coffee in the Conference Center preceding a showing of the RMCMI slide/tape program on enhancing the image of coal mining, by telling the story of the Institute. Following this, the meeting was called to order by President McKeever at 8:30 a.m. when he introduced Mr. Carl Terzian who presented a workshop entitled "Sure You Have an Image - But What Kind?". MR. McKEEVER: Good morning Carl. I see you're ready to address this bright and busy tail audience. One of the things that I really want to point out this morning and I knew we would have a second chance with Carl Terzian but Carl is someone that will leave a good lasting impression on you and what he will hopefully be talking about, as I remember, is that what he's saying here can be used personally, or for company, or for the Institute, or anything else on image. Carl is Chairman of the Board of Carl Terzian Associates. He is a prominent author, lecturer and consultant. He is headquartered in Los Angeles and he's nationally known: governmental affairs, man¬agerial development and executive speech training and has served nearly four hundred clients since 1969. Each year he travels nearly 300,000 miles to address conventions, conferences and sales and management meetings as a motivational speaker. Carl has been speaking professionally for more than twenty-five years. He was graduate magna cum laude 1957 from the University of Southern California where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa and student body president. He later served as State Department goodwill ambassador for President Eisenhower; public relations director for Lutheran Hospital Society of Southern California; dean and professor of political science and speech at Woodbury University and public affairs director for architect Charles Luckman. He has been honored for his civic and philanthropic and professional accomplishments by the Congress and State Department, California Assembly and Senate, City and County of Los Angeles, Her Majesty the Queen of England, and six times by the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge. Carl, welcome to our Coal Mining Institute and it's been kind of a historical situation on Tuesday morning that we will probably have people straggling in after that wonderful steak fry that we had last night. Prediction of rock cuttability by various excavation machines such as tunnel boring machines, road headers, rippers, picks, roller disc cutters, excavators, etc is of major concern to both civil and mining engineers and rock mechanics. In principle, the design of a rock cutting tool is based on achieving maximum excavation with minimum input energy, minimum applied force, minimum equipment weight and volume and, more importantly, minimum tool wear. When a rock material is indented by the force of a cutting tool and then unloaded several material zones form underneath and around the tool. As the tool moves into the rock the volume of its associated rock cavity (ie volume of displaced rock) expands and depending on the indenter's shape various phenomena may occur. Immediately beneath the tool a small zone in which the stress state is more or less hydrostatic, is formed which is underlain by an inelastic, or damaged, material zone. Both size and shape of this damaged zone control the magnitude of the indentation force and the chip formation mechanism during unloading. The rock is unable to store the whole strain energy induced by the tool and consequently the extra energy is expended either in forming new fracture surfaces and/or in plastic deformation in the damaged zone. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that both perfect-elastic and rigid-plastic constitutive models are not generally suitable for modelling indentation of rocks. In contrast elastoplastic constitutive models are more appropriate as they can include both elastic and plastic deformations (Kral et al, 1993). Elastic solutions for several half-space indentation problems can be found in most text books on elasticity and in particular in Timoshenko and Goodier (1951), Sneddon, (1951), Poulos and Davis (1974) and Johnson (1985a). If a failure criterion, eg the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is applied to delimit elastic solutions for indentation problems, a lower bound limit of the applied indentation force (for a given indentation depth) can be estimated. It may be noted that elastic analyses, without any delimiting failure criteria, normally overestimate the indentation force. Plastic solutions for a few indentation problems may be found in Hill (1950), Johnson, (1985a) and Alehossein et al (1992). When analysing the behaviour of indented rocks the choice of an appropriate constitutive model describing effectively the behaviour of the rock at various stages and phases during indentation is a challenging issue. Several questions need to be answered before starting an effective analysis. The first question is of course: Which one of these is more appropriate for modelling zones underneath and around a cutter, elasticity or plasticity theory, continuum damage mechanics or fracture mechanics, and what is the bridging link between these various theories? Which mode is more dominant in fracturing rock, tensile or shear mode? What governs the mechanism of chip formation? What is the function, shape and the behaviour of the pulverised zone that forms just underneath a cutter? Is the hydrostatic stress state assumption reasonable for this zone? How does the rock change during the absorption and dissipation of the input energy and how does the indentation energy vary with rock type and depth of penetration? How can we model the damaged zone under the indenter? Furthermore does a plastic material form beneath the pulverised zone? When and how do radial and ring cracks form around and under an indenter?

"The paper focuses on problems of atmospheric pollution by the dusts, produced during the course of crushing and grinding processes, and the main objective of investigative programme is an assessment of emission of particulate pollutants for following crushing devices operated in plant scale: impactors, cone and jaw crushers. All crushers operate in aggregate production plants in Poland. In the first stage of investigations there were determined dust emission levels and supporting characteristics for all crushers under investigation. Then there were introduced indices that allow for comparative analysis in terms of dust emission, for devices with different energy consumptions and comminution ratio. It appeared that crushers with high the overall dust emission do not always achieved unfavorable dust emission per comminution ratio or energy consumption. The introduced indices proved their usefulness, because they helped to carry out a comparative analysis among crushers, operating under different technological conditions. It is also easier to assess environmental impact of individual crushing devices, under analysis. Results of investigations also show that environmental impact of different types of crushers is diverse and it is difficult to compare dust emissions of various types of crushers without taking into account technological aspects (like throughput, comminution ratio, energy consumption, and others) of their operations.INTRODUCTION Mineral processing of raw material is a complex process, involving in general operations of size reductions and separation. Depending on the type of specific raw material, the technological circuit may include operations of comminution and size classification. This is a typical circuit for aggregate production. In ore treatment industry the process in much more complicated and include also a metallurgical treatment of ore concentrate – the final product from processing plant stage.In general, regardless the type of raw material, operations of size reduction are present in each technological circuit of mineral processing. Operations of crushing and grinding are an integral part of processing technology, because they play a crucial role in effective treatment of mineral raw materials (Gawenda 2013). Their duty is to liberate the useful minerals from the gangue in ore treatment industry, or to produce the material with the required particle size in case of aggregate processing. Crushing and grinding operations are of a high negative impact on environment and humans. They consume great amounts of energy, what indirectly contributes to higher emission of carbon dioxide CO2. Apart from energy, crushing and grinding device consume significant amount of steel and other metals and alloys due to high wear of working parts and grinding media. This is also of negative environmental impact due to emissions of additional amounts of CO2 in production of steel and other metals required as spare parts for comminution devices."

Industrial minerals are generally considered to include non-metallic minerals, mineral products, or materials that provide raw material inputs for the construction, chemical, and manufacturing industries. They are often relatively low-value and bulky materials that are generally used close to where they are produced; however, some raw materials may be transported hundreds of kilometres to manufacturers and customers (ENDM, 2021). They do not include the metallic minerals, mineral fuels, or gemstones, and are used in industries based on their physical and/or chemical properties (Wikipedia, 2021). In contrast to most metallic minerals, a general distinguishing characteristic of the industrial minerals sector is their general low degree of market elasticity in relation to the market prices and product specifications. The estimation of either a Mineral Resource or a Mineral Reserve (MRMR) for an industrial minerals deposit can be affected to a significant degree by a number of factors that are not typically applicable to metallic mineral deposits. These factors can include such considerations as the particular physical and chemical characteristics of the final product, product quality issues, market size and market access. In some cases, such information may be confidential and proprietary. One of the key challenges of the industrial minerals sector is to define a commonly accepted listing of which types of minerals, materials, or mineral deposits can be considered as industrial minerals (Mining Standards Task Force, 1999). Although definitions for what constitutes an industrial mineral can vary in detail, general descriptions can be found in American Geosciences Institute (2021), Fastmarkets IM (2021), Snowden (2019), SME (2021) and Wikipedia (2021). A brief listing of some of the materials and minerals that are generally considered to be industrial minerals is provided in Table 1. For the purposes of this document, all references to industrial minerals include not only the minerals, materials, and mineral deposits themselves, but also the various commercial products that are derived from these sources.

W. J. Parton—Those operators faced with the problem of treating fine coal whether in bituminous or anthracite will find this paper most timely. I would like to take this opportunity of discussing Mr. Schiffman's paper and at the same time express certain views relating to our Tamaqua plant. I would like to ask the author what type of impeller and diffuser is used in the Denver cells? Screen analysis of products from individual cells indicate that coarser material resists flotation and only floats after greater retention time in the last few cells. Also, the need for a scavenger screen to reclaim non-floated coal particles further stresses this point. I have always felt that more efficient means of cleaning coal between 10-mesh and 28-mesh existed than flotation. Reagent and power costs are high for the flotation process. When floating +28-mesh particles, cell capacity is lowered and some of the particles are lost with the refuse. The Tamaqua plant of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. floats —28-mesh coal and capacity of recoverable coal is 40 tph for 1800 cu ft of Denver cells; or 0.05 tons per cu ft of cell. At Kimberly 7.75 tph for 600 cu ft of cell gives 0.013 ton per cu ft of cell. At Bessie 14 tph for 800 cu ft of cell gives 0.017 tons per cu ft of cell. It would be appreciated if the author would comment on what he feels is the upper size limit of particle to attain most efficient utilization of the flotation process. The dewatering screw is a very interesting development since it offers a simple way to prepare coal sludge for more complete clewatering by drainage or mechanical dewatering on screen or filters. In other words it could be used to accomplish the same thing as a thickener tank. I would appreciate having the author's comment on how he thinks such a screw dewaterer would work on a froth.* The process as used in floating coal at the Bessie and Kimberly plants may be referred to as more of a bulk oil float in contrast to a froth flotation process. Experiments on increasing capacity of cells is most interesting since we are going through such an experi- mental period at the present time. Recently a double overflow was installed on our No. 30 Denver cells. So far results are not conclusive. In reviewing this paper the following comments are made pertaining to investigation of methods for increasing capacity: Supercharging: Supercharged air in matte flotation or for that matter the use of the normal amount of air drawn in by the impeller would in all probability cause such an aeration in the cell as to destroy the buoyant effect given to the coal particles by the excessive amount of kerosine used. In other words, air creates an agitation zone throughout the cell, creating a boiling and thereby giving a lower recovery in the cell. It would be interesting to know whether the 7 pct increase in recovery was with no air being admitted to the stand pipe. Changing Impeller Speed: The speed of a receded disc impeller for a No. 30 cell as recommended by the Denver Equipment Co. is, I believe, approximately 250 rpm. At this speed and using supercharged air in excess of 8-oz pressure, we have observed a boiling action in the cells. In our flotation we endeavor to obtain some degree of froth flotation using pine oil as a frother. The boiling action as caused by increasing the amount of air added to the cells is detrimental to recovery in froth flotation. It is our belief that to obtain increased recovery from a cell in froth flotation, additional air must be introduced but at the same time this air must be dispersed throughout the pulp in the form of small bubbles and this can only be done by increasing the speed of the impeller. Therefore, if Mr. Schiffman decreased the speed of the No. 30 impellers and at the same time continued to use supercharged air, the boiling action may have been increased because larger bubbles developed. The lower recovery as reported could be due to this factor. Decreasing the impeller speed will definitely decrease the power consumed but may have other disadvantages. First, we believe it will permit "sanding" in the cell and this in our opinion will increase the wear on the impeller and diffuser, especially so, if there is pyrite and/or sand present in the feed. "Sanding" in the cell when air is used, as in froth flotation, will effect the dispersion of this air and cause boiling.

"THE TOPIC on which I am speaking this afternoon is ""The Future of the Canadian Oil Industry.'' At the time of C + 100, we should take a searching look at ourselves, an honest appraisal of our achievements and a forthright accounting of our shortcomings as well as the uniquely Canadian aspects of this industry. I would like to put before you some of my views on the direction we are taking in the exploration field and in the production field. I would also like to speak briefly on some of our problems and the role of the various segments of our industry in solving these problems.First of all, let us look at the exploration picture. We are in the midst of an exploration boom. There were 133 seismic crews active in Western Canada this winter, the highest since 1957, land prices are appreciating rapidly, Canadian oil reserves increased + 16 per cent during 1966, there is a great demand for technical personnel of every kind and the whole industry, except the drilling segment, seems to be prospering. This surge of activity has its roots in two major occurrences. The first of these was the change in the pro-ration system in Alberta, the major producing province, accompanied by the change in spacing pat-terns. The proration change was designed primarily to encourage in-creased exploration and it has certainly had this effect. It has also had the unforeseen effect of put-ting everyone into what we, in the oil business, call ""elephant hunting."" In other words, the days of the development of barely economic, marginal fields are over. Oil companies today are only interested in high-reserve, high-productivity, high-quality reservoirs."

Progressively more stringent emission limits and advances in regulations and enforcement have made air compliance more difficult for metallurgical facilities. This has historically required improved collection and treatment of stack sources. Fugitive emission reductions are now increasingly required to achieve compliance. Typically small in magnitude, fugitive emissions have a disproportionate impact on ground level concentrations, can be visible to the public and can influence workplace health and safety. Moreover, these emissions are complex, as they are spread over multiple sources, distance and time and are affected by various activities and conditions. As such it is difficult to find, define and monitor these emissions and their impacts. This difficulty translates to the design of emission reduction measures and operational requirements. This paper presents an overview or ‘heuristic’ of fugitive emissions management for compliance in existing operations. This includes aspects such as the impact of regulations on project scope, approaches to developing a comprehensive emission inventory, considerations for solution development and the plant’s role in sustaining compliance once achieved. Case studies are presented to demonstrate how portions of this approach have been applied.

The swift decline of coal during the period of unprecedented expansion in the Canadian economy is a phenomenon deserving careful examination, because the underlying forces contributing to this decline may have broader implications in our national economy. At the present level of technology, coal is more difficult to process, transport and utilize than liquid and gaseous fuels. Fundamentally, it is a matter of limitation in technique. Because coal is a vast store-house of energy in Canada, the reduction of these limitations is in the long-term national interest.

Forecasting, an ancient art, is con-ducted by everyone in varying degrees. It is a vital aspect of mineral production and conditions must be predicted over a long time frame in all aspects of the industry from exploration to plant construction. Although many government agencies as well as private industry make forecasts, there are insufficent "make good" analyses performed. The performance of more such studies could sharpen forecasting ability.

Due to the remote locations of the mining projects and the demand for long transmission lines to provide electrical power, mining sites often operate with poor network power quality and low short circuit capacity. In order to cope up with this situation, more and more mining projects are considering the installation of appropriately designed Synchronous Condensers(SC) together with Power Factor Correction and Harmonic Filter System(PFC&HFS). The installation of these power quality equipments is viewed as a technological advancement in the mining application. An adequate level of short circuit power is essential and has to be ensured for the safe and reliable operation of especially large cycloconverter driven gearless mill drive systems used for grinding application. Increase in plant short circuit power is generally achieved by lowering the impedance of the supplying network. The SC also provides smooth voltage control during mill starting or major load trips, thereby regulating the plant voltage within the required limits. This paper will explore the impact, technical advantage and reasoning for the selection of the advanced hybrid technology mentioned above, in order to cope with the power system challenges for future mining projects. It also highlights the potential problems and how to address them carefully.

Imagine a æshinyÆ new mine, $1 B in the bank and record commodity prices. So how does a company and its management team create enough tension to maximise profit and to establish a culture that can weather the good and bad times?That was exactly the situation the team at OZ MineralsÆ world class Prominent Hill mine in South Australia faced in 2009.Three years later, the harder times have come - lower though still healthy commodity prices, rising industry costs, fierce competition for talent, geological and technical issues (common to developing mines). However, the company was able to maximise profit during the good times and equip the culture to deal with the tougher times with minimal turnover.Through the combination of simple systems and processes, people development, application of commercial technical acumen and a combination of yin and yang leadership, OZ Minerals has achieved something quite rare - sustainable continuous improvement.The journey started with a vision. The EGM Operations created the æsparkÆ. The dream was to create a æfranchise mineÆ that could be rolled out to new mines and acquisitions as the company grew. However, the real leadership came from his lieutenants who provided the important yin and yang. The GM commercial provided the tools, processes, systems and the bottom line focus. The GM operations focused on culture, leadership, training and sustainability. This powerful combination (along with some good old persistence) was able to create the critical mass required to make continuous improvement go æviralÆ.This paper explores this unique case to uncover the essential ingredients that were created and mixed together. Mine planning processes are continuously evolving, increasing in complexity, and are required to be developed in shorter timeframes, often missing important steps in the process. Underground coal mines are also moving into more challenging environments, with the more favourable resources having been exhausted. In addition to traditional mine planning processes there is an increasing level of complexities associated with parallel systems including the preparation of Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) compliant estimates (JORC, 2012 and Guidelines Review Committee, 2014) or seeking critical regulatory development consent to undertake mining. There is a clear link between geotechnical considerations and success of mining operations, and therefore it is essential that such considerations are elevated in both status and priority. It is obvious that geotechnical considerations are paramount in any mine, however it is imperative to accept that such considerations, and the collection of information relating to such, are undertaken from the onset of any mining project. Water treatment is not æcore businessÆ for mining companies.Just as mineral ores and coals are unique, each requiring detailed characterisation and pilot-testing to determine their optimum beneficiation route, so too are mine waters, each requiring careful assessment to determine the most appropriate treatment. There are many cases of æregret capitalÆ expenditure, whereby mines have installed off-the-shelf equipment only to find it inadequate for their purposes or grossly expensive and labour intensive to operate.Water may be required for potable purposes, ore processing, dust control and/or irrigation. A major driver will frequently be environmental constraints for off-site discharge. Mine water projects can become very complex, and detailed models need to be prepared and optimised to properly consider the raw water sources, the on-site storages, the on-site uses and the off-site discharges, as well as handling the residuals (by-products) of water treatment. By-products may be in the form of concentrated backwash streams or streams of elevated salt content. Careful management of the by-products is required to avoid recontamination of the source water.Regulators often drive mine owners toward reverse osmosis (RO) so that their discharges can be considered as æzero dischargeÆ in terms of potential pollutants. Such decisions need to be based on site-specific information rather than any form of æblanketÆ requirement. An analogy is that many humans like to consume mineral water rather than ænormalÆ tap water. Receiving environments also accommodate or even prefer their æmineralsÆ and so RO is neither warranted nor sustainable in many cases.This paper presents two case studies for operating mine sites, both of which have a significant excess of water requiring environmental discharge. The examples demonstrate a sensible balance between treatment type, environmental constraints, process implementation and residuals management. MUCH has been said and written of the "Big Inch," of the terrific obstacles encountered in its construction, of the colorful and tough men engaged in its building, but little has been publicized of the engineering and economic problems behind the scenes. Long before Pearl Harbor it was apparent to the petroleum industry that a critical oil shortage could be expected along the Atlantic seaboard, owing to delay in tanker deliveries as a result of convoy movements, and to allocation of vessels for foreign shipments. This area, with a normal consumption of approximately 1,800,000 barrels per day of oil and products, was almost entirely supplied by tanker. Pipe lines supplied an average of only 20,000 barrels per day in 1939, 40,300 barrels per day in 1940, and 55,000 barrels per day in 1941. A small amount of oil and products was also delivered via barge.

"The eastern portion of the Late Precambrian geosynclinal structure known as the Labrador Trough comprises a 16,000-square-mile sulphide-bearing belt of good potential as a base metal exploration area. Hollinger and Hanna mining interests have carried on exploration in the region since 1953, with encouraging results. This program has been considerable in terms of both effort and expenditure, and has resulted in an apparently successful primary evaluation of the entire belt.Much detailed work remains to be done in the area. Exploration to date has been largely of a reconnaissance nature, employing various methods in common use in Canada today. In the course of this work, several deposits of promise, containing near-economic quantities of copper, zinc, nickel and other metals, have been located. A broad classification of these deposits is proposed.Exploration in the sulphide belt was started on the basis of partial control of the area under mineral exploration concessions. This was necessary to justify operations in an area of difficult access and high operating costs. The results of this now-terminated arrangement are regarded as being of benefit to those directly concerned as well as to the mineral industry in general."

Beginning on the Niagara Power Project, presplitting became a widely used blasting technique to obtain smooth walls in mining and construction projects reducing scaling, creating more stable pits, allowing the application of slope steepening to reduce waste removal and increase mining depths, and increasing the safety of mine and construction workers. This technique has been minimally studied in comparison to production blasting and currently two separate theories are present on the mechanics behind the presplit. The first is that shockwave collisions between boreholes cause a tension zone to develop causing the split formation. The second is that gas pressures build in the boreholes causing hoop stresses between holes leading to a presplit formation. Practical blasting methods in presplitting such as propellant presplitting and precision presplitting would not be applicable based on the shockwave theory yet are widely used and documented in the industry. Along with this, modern research using a borehole simulation device and advanced pressure gauges have allowed the authors to obtain true borehole pressures in decoupled blastholes. This paper will present this research which correlates the borehole pressure to variables such as the Young's Modulus and Tensile Strength of various rock types giving blast designers the ability to design a presplit to function in many rock conditions, including weak rocks such as siltstones and mudstones.

Dicho yacimiento se encuentra localizado en el noreste del Perú, adyacente al distrito minero de Quiruvilca. A partir del año 1995 se le reconoció como el mayor productor de oro a través de un programa de exploración en la Formación volcánica Calipuy. Posteriormente, el yacimiento fue visitado por variosgeólogos que postularon diferentes modelos genéticos del yacimiento para así estimar su potencial económico -en tanto se incrementaron los datos geológicos del yacimiento. Por ello, el texto presenta el modelo genético de Tres Cruces, como el más adecuado, aunque la evaluación de su potencial econornica está aún en progreso."
