During a mine fire or other emergency, it may be desirable to reverse the air flow in order to provide an escapeway or to control a fire. Also, in colder areas, the air flow may be reversed to prevent ice build-ups. When reversing main mine fans, the operator usually does not know what operating characteristics of flow and pressure to expect. Laboratory testing of vane axial main mine fans has been completed in order to establish forward and reverse performance characteristics under controlled conditions, with the results presented here. Preliminary tests under field conditions have also been conducted. The data obtained suggest that reverse performance characteristics are dependent upon the blade angle and the hub to tip ratio. There is also evidence that reverse performance can he predicted for a family of blade angles in a given hub to tip ratio. In general, the air quantity delivered by the fan is 30% to 60% less in reverse than when operating in the normal forward mode.

IN these days of intense competition for the domestic fuel market much is heard of the low efficiencies with which solid fuels, and most particularly bituminous coal, are burned in domestic heating equipment. In contrast to the every-day operating efficiencies of 85 and 90 per cent in large, central, electric-generating stations, efficiencies of 50 per cent and lower are cited for the hand-fired home furnace. Just as the miles per gallon of gasoline is only one of the factors that determine the cost of operation of an automobile, so the thermal efficiency is only one factor in the cost of domestic or other heating. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the total costs of domestic heating by various fuels and types of equipment, to determine the relative importance of efficiency and other factors, and to discuss what this signifies relative to the future of the use of fuels in the home.

A comprehensive approach to the development and organization of an expert system designed to assist electricians in diagnosing electrical faults in mining machinery is discussed. The system includes diagnostic, reference, and tutorial programs. The diagnostic portion of the system is based on a causal-reasoning approach, which is used to establish a hierarchy of symptoms and the subsequent production rules for identifying component-level failures in the motor-control circuit of a shuttle car. With this approach, conclusions are developed directly from knowledge of the circuit and its behavior (in both working and failure modes) based on first principles, rather than the heuristics of a domain expert. The symptoms and their hierarchal structure are formulated by creating "what if' scenarios and performing a qualitative circuit analysis for each fault. Techniques for incorporating interactive graphical displays of the circuit schematic into the diagnostic portion of the system are also presented. Supportive computer programs that provide reference material and tutorials on the circuit are also described.

It had its beginnings in the theory of games of chance which were of great interest to European mathematicians during the last half of the 17th century. The Mount Isa Copper Concentrator was commissioned in 1973. In 1991, two autogenous grinding mills were installed replacing two stages of crushing, one stage of rod milling and one stage of primary ball milling. The cyclone overflow P80 of the secondary ball milling circuit was reduced to 120 microns due to the increased operating power in the AG/SAG mill circuits. A study of the mineralogy of the milled products and the plant flotation recovery indicated that the installed secondary grinding energy was more than what was required for adequate liberation of the chalcopyrite and half of it had potential for more effective use elsewhere. Halving the secondary grinding energy meant only one of the two secondary ball mills would be needed. The predicted saving in operating cost of one less ball mill was more than two million dollars per annum. This paper summarises various plant trials that were conducted in the Copper Concentrator to decommission one of the two secondary ball mills.

Scientific elite of the Minerals Beneficiation Div. assembled in Denver, Colo., September 17 to 20 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Froth Flotation in the United States of America. In his warm address of welcome at the opening luncheon, John W. Vanderwilt, President, Colorado School of Mines, recalled his experience in Bonanza which coincided with the early days of flotation. In those years the scientific and engineering aspects of the process which we know today were little understood and operating the flotation circuit was considered an "art." Luncheon Chairman H. L. McNeill caught the flavor of the old days in an anecdote which recalled the mill nightmares to many present with the agonized words, "Oh God, what's happened to the concentrate now!" It was an appropriate gesture when he called the names of some of the flotation greats for presentation to the assembly; and many an "artist" there was among them!

When the automatic control of a ventilation process is considered, and supervising expert systems need to be designed, an important problem to address is: what will be the optimal set points of the regulators that should meet a certain number of independently formulated requirements, distributed over a ventilation network? The set of these requirements, expressed in terms of air flow quantities or differential pressures in certain airways, need not be consistent. Their number is not limited by the number of available regulators, nor by their nature, i.e. passive or active. Moreover, they may be subject to upper or lower limit values. The method described here addresses this problem and tries to provide a tool that should allow to calculate the set points of all the regulators as a global and optimal solution with respect to this set of distributed requirements. The pure mathematical developments in this paper are kept as short as possible in order to allow more room for the description of a relevant example.

This paper reviews some of the factors involved in selecting amine flotation reagents used to remove silica from ores. A comparison is made between the chemical reagent design approaches used to identify flotation reagents that are used to recover silica- and oxygen-containing minerals and the chemical reagents used to recover sulfide minerals. This introduction gives practitioners who are involved with oxide- and carbonate-type minerals and who may not be familiar with sulfide mineral flotation some ideas of the chemical reagent design challenges that exist with froth flotation on a broader scale and why oxide type mineral flotation reagents are what they are. This is followed by several sections that discuss various classes of available amines. The closing sections emphasize that the optimal choice of an amine collector depends not only on that amine's specific chemical characteristics and costs but also on the operating conditions, especially the flotation feed particle size distribution.

There are different reasons for purging a metal bath. The operations are varied, for example the purging gas can be used as a reactive gas being part of the metallurgical process or as an inert gas using the rising gas bubbles for agitation only. The different purposes for agitation, chemical and thermal homogenization or a preferential movement of the slag to the slag skimming door have to be considered. It depends on the furnace type and its dimensions as well as the process characteristics what the focus is on. For an optimized arrangement of numbers and position of all single plugs in the furnace, mathematical modeling - the CFD Computational Fluid Dynamics method - is used. This paper shows how the operation of purging plugs can influence the metallurgical process of an anode furnace by the example of Jinchuan Copper in China. The potentials for savings in energy consumption as well as in time for oxidation and reduction are presented.

Various countries around the world have testing and manufacturing standards in place for steel cord belting. These standards are very comprehensive in what they allow the end user to specify, however, their practical significance in terms of belt life is more difficult to quantify. Such testing standards will be briefly reviewed in this paper in relation to the implication for end user expectancy. Since there is no US standard of manufacture, the end user is left with writing their own specifications. In addition, such standards do not address the effect on belt life of manufacturing faults, such as cord plane buckles, or lateral cord movement. Some new technology used to test steel cord belting will be described as an aid to both manufacturer and end user. This paper discusses how a mill uses off-site data hosting approach to effectively utilize an entire suite of advanced applications to optimize daily operations, without incurring the overhead of on-site systems, staff and support. Details of the solution are provided, together with a live view of actual plant operations. Security and authentication mechanisms are also outlined so that users may gain an appreciation of the actual security of the remotely hosted data. A number of Web-hosted software applications provide direct connectivity to the database offering rapid and deterministic response times to clients. A 24x7 help-desk is available to authorized users from any Internet connected device. The paper shows how mill management advantageously use wireless PDA's to view what is going on at anytime and from anywhere. It concludes with a summary of how the approach is being used to speed decision-making and capture spot market opportunities.

Flotation was used to achieve improved separation of magnetite from the float and sink products obtained from heavy medium separation and to reduce the load of the medium cleaning circuit. The investigation was carried out in two successive phases. In the first phase, tests were performed on in-plant samples from the Homer City Coal Perdition plant to determine what effects variables such as medium density, particle size and magnetite source had on the efficiency of the process. In the second phase, the optimum conditions determined in the first phase were used to determine the applicability of the process to other selected coals from central Pennsylvania. It was observed that flotation was very effective in the separation of magnetite from coal. In most of the cases investigated, the magnetite recovery was approximately 99% with a magnetite grade ranging from 95 to 99%. The grade of the magnetite decreased as the ash content of the coal increased and the particle size of the magnetite decreased.

A 2-year moratorium on accreditation of curricula bearing new designations has been declared by Engineers' Council for Professional Development at its Executive Committee meeting on July 29, 1952. Reason: a more definitive description of what the contents of a curriculum should include to be appropriately designated as "engineering" is needed. This action was brought on by the Committee of Evaluation of the American Society of Engineering Education which had become perturbed over the extension of the name "engineering" to numerous fringe curricula. The 2-year period will permit time for the Committee on Evaluation to study the question and make a recommendation for further action by ECPD. ECPD action also provided that the following curricula should only be given provisional accreditation for one year upon either inspection or reinspection; such provisional accreditation to be extended annually for not more than two successive years pending the report: Engineering Physics, Engineering Mechanics, Geological Engineering, Geophysical Engineering, and Textile Engineering. There are 22 such curricula now accredited.

Few topics in the blasting industry are more controversial than the proper riming procedure for large-diameter ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) charges, despite the considerable amount of research that has been done both in the laboratory and in the field. The January, April, and June 1975 issues of Emphasis on Blasting contain interesting discussions on priming (5). An ideal primer is one that will surely and efficiently initiate the AN-FO column at the correct location to assure optimum blasting performance. During the 20 years of AN-FO's existence, singlepoint priming, axial priming, multiple-point priming, thermal priming, and shock riming have all been advocated as the "optimum" method. This is not surprising because blasting specialists have often differed on even the most fundamental concepts. To define the optimum primer, we must know what detonation characteristics in the AN-FO column are most desirable. Again, authorities disagree. This paper will discuss conclusions of various studies in an attempt to clear up some of the confusion.

In the present study the utilization of coal ashes that appear at the end of firing process of brick production in cement pastes was examined. Ashes with three different particle sizes of 75 µm, 106 µm and 150 µm were used to replace ordinary Portland cement (PC) as 5 % and 15 % by weight. Seven samples were prepared and physical, mechanical, chemical and microstructural analyses were carried out. The compressive and bending strength values of samples were determined at the ages of 2, 7 and 28 days. It was found that cementitious pastes with finer particle sizes possessed the highest compressive and bending strength values at all curing ages. Both values after 2 and 7 days cure increased with an increase in ash content, no matter what the particle sizes of ashes were. However, strength decreased after 28 days cure as a result of ash addition of 15 %, although it was still above that of the PC.

Along with tires and transmission systems, engines have been a limiting factor in the growth of large off- highway trucks. The problem, primarily, has been the development of reliable, high-performance engines that are not prohibitively heavy or expensive. For many years, horsepower to overall truck weight ratios have been in the vicinity of 300 lb per hp for rear dump units up to 50 tons capacity. This ratio is obviously very poor when compared to the much lighter and smaller highway trucks, which frequently have a performance ratio of 100 lb per hp. Unfortunately, the larger mining trucks have not been able to match even the 50-ton trucks, and in some cases, ratios have dropped as low as 450 lb per hp. This results in a performance of only 67% of that achieved by the older smaller trucks. Thus, the message is clear: what is needed is more horsepower and less weight.

(Figure 1) ?This technique will inspect one gear tooth in 30 seconds. ?All of the data can be archived for future comparisons in an electronic report. Methodology ?This technique utilizes Eddy Current Array (ECA) as the principle inspection technique. ?What has been added are specialty scanner probes with multiple coils, a multiplexer and a software package. ?With 2 and 3D dimensional isometric displays, the defect can be seen electronically as it is on the gear tooth surface, thus, reducing the reliance on human interpretation.

"The paper discusses the approach used to add a new, separate 5000 t/d copper-zinc treatment circuit to an existing, 1650 t/d copper circuit, essentially within the existing mill building. Temporary installation of new equipment allowed renovation and expansion within existing operating areas. Production in the original circuit was maintained at rated capacity throuqh0ut the construction period through close co-ordination between operating and construction groups. Downtime for circuit and service tie-ins was minimal. With the advent of mechanical loading the need of definite information has become more apparent. The co-ordination of all the individual units of operation has become very necessary From these two essential features in running a mechanized coal mine has come the demand for the "time study." The time study is nothing more or less than the recording of each operation together with the time of clay or the total time expended during a period of work. Using the latter, it is impossible to have information showing just when each piece of work was clone and to what extent they overlap. The studies used here are of the former type, being based on the recording of the operation together with the time of day so that the details of performance of the machine or crew may be followed from starting to quitting time by' referring to the graph upon which the study is taken.

The Tri-State district comprises an area of about 2000 square miles in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas, and north- eastern Oklahoma. The part that is in and contiguous to Missouri is still sometimes designated as the Joplin district (Fig. I). Early Operations Mining operations in what is now the Tri-State district date from about 1848 and have been continuous to the present. Apparently the first discoveries of ore were made about the same time near the present sites of Joplin, Oronogo, and Granby. Lead minerals were found at grass roots, probably in shattered rock in shallow excavations, then these minerals were followed in shear zones to deeper horizons. The mining of zinc followed. Before 1874, zinc ore was worthless and discarded as waste. According to published records, the total production of lead to that date was 49,000 tons of metal from 70,000 tons of concentrates.
