High speed photography through blast-furnace tuyeres showed coke particles moving rapidly. Model studies showed a raceway was formed and gave quantitative results which were correlated with actual blast furnaces. Another study showed the similarity between hanging and the flooding of a packed column. This was explored by models. THE combustion zone before the tuyere in an iron blast furnace is a vital region because here are generated: 1—most of the gases on which the furnace depends to carry out its basic operation of reducing iron ore to the metallic state, and 2—the major fraction of the heat required in the nearby regions of the furnace for the various reduction reactions, the fusion of the slag, and the melting of the iron. Since the greater part of the coke is consumed in this region, the descent of the burden must be greatly affected by the characteristics of the tuyere zone. This region then would seem to be a profitable field for study. Fortunately, a view into this important zone is available to the operator through the tuyere peep sight. Here he sees relatively dark pieces of coke "dancing" in the blast. What he sees is of considerable help in interpreting the behavior of the furnace at a given time but the very rapidly moving particles and the intense radiation obscures what is happening very deep in the zone. This investigation was initiated in the hope that a better understanding of the combustion region could be obtained by using a high speed camera with a maximum speed of 3000 frames per sec. It seemed the best practical method of "slowing down" this characteristically violent action within the highly luminous field. Model studies and tuyere probing also have been used to aid in explaining the observed phenomena. Above the combustion zone, but below the fusion zone, there is probably a region in which the coke is comparatively stationary. Here are zones in which the gases must flow up through the granular bed counter to descending liquid slag and metal. There is no easy way to observe this zone in a blast furnace, but model studies have been of some help in explaining the nature of the zone and the laws governing the flow of the fluids involved. The whole problem is difficult and involved and any approach to a complete solution may require long investigation. This preliminary report has been written, therefore, because it is believed that appreciable progress has already been made that would be of interest to others. Tuyere Studies, Chemistry and Kinetics It is well known from the early work of Kinney and coworkers1,2 that combustion of carbon before the tuyeres appears to occur in two zones: Zone A: C + O, = CO2; AH77°F. = — 14,108 Btu per lb of carbon [I] Zone B: CO2 + C = 2CO; H77°F = + 6,183 Btu per lb of carbon [2] Zone A (Fig. 1) is close to the tip of the tuyere and zone B is somewhat farther back; there being a transition region in which both reactions occur. It is interesting to estimate the rate at which coke is burned before a tuyere with a wind rate of 90,000 cfm in a modern furnace having 18 tuyeres. Approximately 0.55 lb of carbon is consumed by eq 1 per tuyere per sec. A like amount disappears by eq 2 for a total consumption of 1.11 Ib per sec per tuyere. Assuming the coke is 85 pct C and has a bulk density of 30 lb per cu ft, this figure can be converted to a total of 1.30 lb of coke with a bulk volume of 0.043 cu ft disappearing per sec per tuyere. Man's capacity far fretting is endless, and no matter what difficulties we surmount, how many ideals we realize, there is a stealthy pleasure in rejecting mankind or the universe as unworthy of our approval. - Will Durant Until recently, reasons for favoring one or another energy alternative were advanced on the basis of technical considerations and economic realities. However, it is an indication of the cultural climate of our society and growing realization of why energy is our master resource that many citizens have begun to express concern about the social and ethical implications of our energy deci¬sion-making. A vivid indication of this shift toward ethical concerns is reflected in the attention being focused on conservation - even to the point of regarding it as a virtual panacea equivalent to a "free energy resource." Among others, the authors of a publication by Resources for the Future cautions us about the difficulties of defining conservation. They also point out that unrealistic expectations for achieving the high levels of conservation claimed by true believers may boomerang if, at the same time, we are morally required to maintain economic growth and robust productivity for the basic well-being of more people. In its economic meaning, conservation signifies the most economic or cost-effective applications of energy, together with other resources, in a given process or activity. To achieve conservation that is cost-effective, saving energy alone is not sufficient; the cost involved in saving the energy must be no greater than the cost of the energy that is saved. Using its thermodynamic meaning, conservation and efficiency are viewed as constrained by physical laws and measured against ideal limits set by these laws and processes. Since achieving higher levels of technical performance is not without costs, the economic meaning of conservation must be factored into technical possibilities. It is the ethical, equity and environmental meaning of conservation that concerns us here. In its third meaning, conservation consists in moderation as a value which appears inherently worthwhile both in itself and in relation to social choices dedicated to achieving distributive justice. The value of moderation seems predicated on the assumption that natural resources and the environment have fixed, finite, exhaustible capacities for satisfying human needs. Hence norms for moderating human behavior appear to require prescriptions by some authority. Such norms presuppose some agreement on "essential" uses of energy. However, the difficulties of setting behavioral norms loom large, because "... it is as difficult to determine essential energy consumption as to determine what is essential in any other phase of consumption, whether it involves food, clothing, shelter, or recreation." The ethical meaning of conversation is further complicated by a centuries-old argument over the proper exercise of stewardship - i.e., how best to develop natural resources. On the one hand, the preservationist position insists on an inviolate, "hands-off" policy and stands opposed to ongoing development of wilderness areas and mineral resources. On the other hand, the "scientific conservationist" who preaches the "gospel of efficiency" insists on development of resources based on principles of sustained-yield, multiple use and - in the case of competing claims - reserving resources or land for their "higher use." Current confusion reigns among opinion leaders in the environmental movement because they appear to have lost the genius of the original Conservation ethic, developed in the 19th century. They seem to think that conservation is preservation. The question I wish to explore is whether a single-minded, exclusive pursuit of "conservation" in its economic, thermodynamic and preservationist meanings may actually do more harm than good in serving the ethical goals of conservation. There

(communication to the Secretary*): I am greatly pleased that some one has at last reached what I have long regarded as the only rational explanation yet given of the reasons why steel hardens. Mr. Field claims originality; and doubtless he is entitled to it, but not to priority, mhich must be granted to Prof. John W. Langley.' The difference between them is that Langley says " Tension, probably molecular," and Field says " Tension, probably atomic "; in either case the vital thing after solution is tension. Mr. Field's argument carries with it the idea of increase of density with hardness; if he mill study the facts farther he will observe that the case is just the reverse; that is, the greater the hardness the less the specific gravity; it was just this fact that led Langley to his conclusion, in mhich I have always concurred. Field agrees with Langley that the first requisite for perfect hardening is complete solution of the carbon, not combination; and all of the facts agree with this conclusion. The fact that increase of hardness causes reduction of density was first brought to my notice some 40 years ago, when Major William Wade was testing Jones & Laughlin's cold-rolled iron, and I mas his assistant. We found the well-known increase of tenacity, compressive strength, torsional resistance, and hardness. Specific-gravity tests showed that the cold-rolled iron was less dense than the hot-rolled bars. Major Wade was so surprised at this result that he gave me a lot of samples to weigh, saying that he was not satisfied with

Introduction The design of wet grinding circuits may vary considerably according to the duty which is to be performed. Grinding machines which are commonly used in these circuits are rod mills, ball mills, autoge¬nous mills, and pebble mills while size separation machines commonly used are vibrating and wedge-wire screens, hydrocyclones, and rake classifiers. In some circuits, such as those producing feed to cement kilns, all the ore entering the circuit is discharged in a single product stream. In others, such as those operating on magnetite-taconite ores, the feed entering the circuit leaves in two or more streams. Grinding circuits in flotation plants normally include sections in which either the concentrate or the tailings from the primary flotation circuit is reground and these additional sections should be regarded as an inte¬gral part of the grinding circuit. A typical circuit is shown in Fig. 18. Problems in achieving maximum efficiency may occur at three stages: 1) At the design stage when the optimum size reduction flow¬sheet must be selected with respect to the types, numbers, and sizes of processing units. 2) At the operating stage when the correct selection of values must be made for those variables which may be altered while the circuit is off-line but which are constant while the circuit is on-line, for instance the vortex finder diameter of the cyclones. 3) Under conditions of continuous operation when changes in the circuit feed or in the mechanical operation of the circuit may cause undesirable changes in the circuit product. The first two prob¬lems are concerned with optimization, that is, with making the best choice from many possibilities, and the last with control. Optimization Problems. The main purpose of a wet grinding circuit is to produce particles with a sizing distribution which will ensure optimum performance of the later chemical reaction or physical concentration circuits, because it is on the efficiency of these later circuits that the economics of the total mineral treatment process depend. The size distribution of the product from a grinding circuit may be affected by many variables, some concerned with the arrange¬ment and operation of the machines and some concerned with the ore characteristics, and it is important that these should be recognized in the design and operation of the circuit. For instance, in a simple ball mill-cyclone circuit the variables which affect the product size even for constant feed characteristics are shown in Fig. 19. In addition, the rate, size, hardness, and mineralogical composition of the feed will affect the performance of the circuit and the product size. When the circuit contains more than one mill, both the number of choices available and the complexity of the problem are increased consider¬ably. Consequently, one type of problem which is to be solved if an optimum product is to be obtained from an existing grinding circuit is that of circuit design, and this includes arrangement of processing units and selection of those operating conditions which cannot be altered when the circuit is operating, such as mill speed and cyclone inlet and outlet dimensions. The other major problem in optimization is encountered at the design stage when a choice must be made about the type, number, and size of processing units. For instance, for a typical high-capacity size reduction operation, should two circuits each containing one rod mill and two ball mills or three circuits each containing one rod mill and one ball mill be used? Alternatively, should ball mills only be used and if so, how many, what size, and what arrangement?

The basic theme of this symposium and panel Is Rotation Pads: Are They Optimized? There Is a. reason for phrasing the title In the form of a question. There Is not only the technical competency which we must address; there Is the operating philosophy that must be evaluated on the part of both the customer and the supplier. Customers desire reagents which are trouble-free and capable of providing that extra amount of selectivity or recovery. When they receive ft, after the supplier has provided several years of Internal research, one of the first concerns/complaints Is the price of the product. This has a tendency to rapidly reduce a supplier's support level In the future. Suppliers are equally guilty from another perspective. When they approach a customer to Introduce a product, they often attempt to market by offering only a price Incentive. They then wonder why a customer doesn't respond Immediately to the incentive. They are often oblivious to the fact that the reagent cost is such a minor aspect of the operating budget, and the customer has many more pressing problems on a day-to-day basis In comparison to the reagent cost. We need to establish the understanding that reagent cost Is an Inconsequential cost of operation, and yet has such a disproportionately high Impact on the success of the entire operation. This understanding Is required by both the customer and the supplier. We say to each other,' why are we discussing this since this has been obvious for some time?' The reason is relatively simple in that we talk about it, acknowledge it, and yet we do not adhere to it. The supplier provides a product along with test data containing statistics, analysis, recovery, grade and cost calculations while most of the time ignoring the operating technique which must be applicable In the plant In order to optimize the product. He expects the reagent to be substituted In the plant for the existing reagent and ft works or does not work after trying several variables. The operating management Is equally guilty, In order to best explain this to both the customer and the supplier, ft becomes necessary to review the basic purpose of the major reagents utilized In flotation. A collector is basically to Impact selective, maximum water repellency on the surface of a particular mineral, The frother has the purpose of providing a chemically stabilized membrane on the surface of the bubble at the air-water interphase. This, then, provides a host environment for the attachment of the collector-coated mineral to a bubble. The depressant functions In the reverse of the collector and must demonstrate the same or greater degree of selectivity than expected of a collector. The key area which has been Ignored Is the rate by which these reactions occur and Interrelate. This has a very specific effect on the operating technique and the compatibility of the chemistry, equipment, and the operator himself. Researchers, suppliers, and customers provide reams of data to demonstrate how their products or design produce, for example, higher kinetics, more selectivity, or more recovery. The Information is often true. After all, we are all learned men and laboratory and actual plant data do not lie. However, we must remember the theme of this symposium and panel: Flotation Plants: Are They Optimized? and Optimizing of Flotation Reagents? The direct, honest comment to the two titles is very simple. OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT The plants, equipment, and reagents had better not be optimized or else we are in trouble. The Issue of this panel discussion is to approach this subject from a slightly different or perhaps mainly Ignored aspects of optimizing reagents in flotation. When we have reagents which provide higher kinetics, more selectivity, and better recovery, how do we use them? Since each reagent has a different physical characteristics of froth, rate of recovery, volume effect on the compatibility of equipment, and many more aspects too numerous to mention, the question which has been severely Ignored Is, 'What degree of study and cooperation by both the supplier and the operating management has been conducted In order to prepare the operator for maximizing the performance of a reagent In relation to the rest of the system?" Prior to testing a new reagent, how much time Is spent to bring the actual operator(s) Into the program to make them feel part of the program? How much time is spent explaining to the operator on the float floor how to possibly take advantage of a reagent with faster kinetics or one which Is Inherently more selective? What

The current financial state of the mineral industry, in general, is bad. Economic prospects for improvements in the near future are uncertain. What will improve mineral investment economics so the mining industry can return to a more normal (in terms of past experience) production level? Basically, mineral commodity prices must rise. They must rise to economically justify reopening closed mines and for management to seriously consider expansion or development of existing and new mines. With the worldwide economy depressed for more than a year now (longer for most segments of the mineral industry), supply/demand relationships for mineral commodities are such that prices are depressed-except for precious metals. In investment analysis of the economic potential of existing or new investments in any industry, product price generally is one of the key parameters having great impact on the economic viability of projects. Petroleum and synfuels industry development contracted last year for the same product price reasons that have brought mineral industry development to a standstill. Much of the new mine development activity now underway or in the serious planning stages around the world involves precious metals ore body development simply because precious metal prices are high enough now or are projected to be high enough in future production years to give overall satisfactory project economics. It will take significant improvement in nonprecious metal mineral commodity prices in 1983 to develop significant new mine investment interest except in very high grade ore body special situations. Mineral Investment Decision Making Before progressing further with the discussion of mineral investment considerations for the coming year, it should be emphasized that mineral investment decision making-like all industry or individual investment decision making does not relate just to economic considerations. Investment decision making should and generally does involve three analyses: • Economic analysis • Financial analysis • Intangible analysis Economic analysis evaluates the relative economic merits of investment situations from a profitability viewpoint based on discounted cash flow analysis of projected investment revenues and costs. Financial analysis, on the other hand, refers to where and how the funds for proposed investments will be obtained. Regardless of the project's economic potential, if you can't finance it, the project will not be done. Intangible analysis considers factors affecting investments but which cannot be quantified easily in economic terms. Typical intangible factors are legal considerations, public opinion, goodwill, environmental and ecological impacts, and regulatory or political considerations, to name a few. New mine development investment decision making in the US has been impacted heavily by intangible considerations in the past decade and will probably continue to be impacted by them in 1983. There is a common tendency in literature and management practice to interchange the terms economic analysis and financial analysis. This often leads to confusion about the rationale for investment decisions. For example, in the past year a majority of companies in all types of industries cut back budgets for new projects. Often this was done not because new project economics were unsatisfactory, but because cash flow from existing operations was reduced compared to previous years due to the recession, and debt service requirements were high from existing loans so new borrowing was undesirable. For financial reasons, in other words, many projects were shelved last year. That included some precious metal mining projects and many petroleum projects. Many other projects were shelved for economic reasons (sometimes combined with financial reasons in the case of marginal economic projects). New mine development for copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and synthetic fuels are a few examples. Economic Uncertainty and Financial Considerations Mineral project analysis has always involved a lot of uncertainty with respect to determining ore grades, tonnage of producible reserves, operating and capital cost projects, and mineral commodity prices estimates. The wide swings in mineral commodity prices in recent years and the almost impossible task of projecting future prices with any degree of confidence or accuracy concerns mineral project investment decision makers. In developing a new copper or silver mine, it is not today's price of copper or silver that is relevant to economic analysis of the mine, but what the price will be during the producing years. There is no way to avoid projecting the escalation (or de-escalation) effects on revenues and costs. To analyze a project in terms of today's dollar revenues and costs implicitly assumes that escalation will not change today's project costs and revenues; or that, if they do change, the project economics will be unaffected by the changes. This often is not the best or even a realistic assumption. The inherent uncertainty associated with historical mineral price swings is exacerbated in 1983 by the uncertainty of when

Discussion by G. Sanders The studies reported on in this paper were initiated to draw attention to the severe contamination problem in the Section 30 drilling program at Chimney Creek. The lithologic-subset sampling study reached a different conclusion from that presented in your paper, and I wish to comment on your subsequent analysis of the data and your conclusions. Request for more complete data In the section on subsampling, you mention that the subordinate lithologies were separated and sampled, yet only the dominantlithology gold value is plotted in Fig. 4. In a contamination study, the reader is interested in the assay values for the individual subsets. Please include a table of the subsample assay data in your reply. Also, please indicate which analytical methods were used to arrive at the gold values in the subsampling study. Turning barren rock into low-grade ore Figure 5 is very revealing and typical of all of the cross sections in Section 30. Note the long strings of low-grade mineralization spread out for hundreds of feet below the ore zones. There were some very high gold values found in certain contaminated fractions during the subset sampling. The conclusion, here, was that the distinctive, strongly-mineralized dolomite layer was probably loose and crumbly and continued to disintegrate during drilling. This caused salting of the unmineralized rock samples below. Missing the high-grade part of the ore body In your statistical analysis, you directly compare the reverse circulation assays to the diamond drill assays in Section 30. Two points argue against a direct comparison and suggest the differences are greater than the 3 % that you report. First, any core loss in a gold zone most likely means that the true gold values are greater. The drillers lost significant amounts of the clay-rich, Section-30 gold mineralization. Also, the initiated salt-mud system, an attempt to improve the core recovery, met with little success. Second, the practice of not sampling core geologically, but instead sampling on even 5-foot intervals, adds a deliberate dilution to the core assay values by including a portion of nonmineralized rock in the first and last samples of each high- grade intercept. The result is often a pair of low-grade assay values on either side of a high-grade gold zone. In reality, a high-grade gold zone has a very sharp assay wall that is often bounded by barren rock. This sampling method may make the diamond-drill core assays more like the reverse circulation values and may help explain the statistical similarities you found. However, it does not represent the true gold values in the high-grade parts of the deposit. You cannot deny that, by careful geological sampling of the drill core, higher and sharper assay values will be obtained. The low core recovery and the diamond-drill-core sampling method used act together to lower the diamond-core assay values. The 3% difference you found between the reverse-circulation and diamond-core assay values could be much larger when you consider what the true diamond-drill core values would be with optimum core recovery and a geologic sampling method for the core. Should statistics have been applied here? The statement "... that reverse circulation holes have overestimated the values of some ore zones and underestimated the values of others" (p. 345) is not correct. The subsampling confirmed what the cross sections hinted at in Section 30. Namely, beneath the high-grade zones, the reverse circulation holes created, by contamination, large intercepts of low-grade ore in regions of barren rock. Because the low-grade material was not there to begin with, this is not a process of overestimating low-grade mineralization. The next statement that "the average result is similar to that of the diamond drill holes" may apply to the data set numerically, but it is not true when viewed spatially on cross sections. Adjacent reverse circulation and diamond drill holes are almost impossible to correlate, high-grade zone values vary widely and many low-grade intercepts make no geologic sense. The subset sampling and cross sections presented in the first part of the paper show that the reverse circulation portion of the data set has some serious problems, as highlighted above, and should not have been dealt with statistically at all. Paul D. Suloff (Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Inc., Akron, Ohio)—I would like first to comment on problems of the conveyor belt discussed in Mr. Thompson's excellent paper, since that is what we hope we know most about. Twists in relatively wide conveyor belt unavoidably produce a lateral maldistribution of tension, raising tension at belt edges and reducing it at the center. They also produce a lateral collapsing force on the belt at the center of the twist owing to the inherent tendency of all the longitudinal elements of the belt to try to pass through a point at the twist center. Calculation of the twist geometry by the methods shown in Mr. Thompson's paper keeps these extraordinary forces within limits which the belt designer can tolerate. No reduction in belt life due to twisting need be contemplated when this geometry is maintained. There is a minor exception that belts of extreme lateral flexibility will tend to curl laterally at the center of the twist. However, any ordinary fabric construction will perform satisfactorily in this respect. These twists are always made in regions of low tension in the conveyor so that even in the edges of the twist, belt tension does not exceed the average tension found in highly stressed regions of the conveyor. Offsetting these out-of-ordinary belt stresses is the advantage that Mr. Thompson has brought out of getting the return run up out of the dirt where it can be seen. This not only makes it easier to train, but also, in the event that it is not properly trained, frees it of the normal return run edge wear hazard. It is well known that return run edge wear is a prominent cause of belt mortality underground. An interesting aspect of this two-way conveyor is that the belt may be made what is known as a Mobius Strip. A Mobius Strip is obtained by splicing a belt after turning one end of it 180" about its longitudinal axis. In other words, one end is turned upside down before splicing. A belt spliced in this fashion turns itself upside down every time it comes around, but the twist which has been put in the splicing, of course, stays at one location on the conveyor, in this case one of the twist sections at the end. Turning the belt over every revolution might have advantages in some cases. Belts could be made with equal covers and the two sides worn equally and simultaneously. In this case there would be no problem of getting belts on upside down by mistake. However, the two-way conveyor does not have to be a Mobius Strip. It can be twisted in such fashion that the same side is up on both runs. It is simply a question of which way the final 90" twist is made before joining the ends. Another interesting aspect of the two-way conveyor is the problem of operating two-way conveyors in series. Here the sequencing of starting brings up some new problems. It will be recognized, although not always at first glance, that if the starting sequence is planned for one run of the conveyor the reverse will result on the other run. With the two runs carrying bulk material in both directions a reverse sequence on one run would be intolerable. In this situation the only solution appears to be a simultaneous starting of all conveyors in the series. However, with the coal in one direction and intermittent supplies in the other it would be entirely practical to sequence the conveyors for the coal run and accept a reverse sequence on the supply run. The two-way conveyor also lends itself to new driving possibilities. First, it is quite possible to drive at the head end of each run, which of course, means a drive at each end of the two-way conveyor. Driving in this way a given belt can be extended to substantially greater lengths than a conventional conveyor with drive at one end only. In addition to this, under certain conditions the conveyor can be extended to extreme length by driving at one end and at some intermediate point on the most heavily loaded run. As a particular case, a belt carrying coal downgrade and supplies back upgrade could be extended to extreme lengths by driving at the head of the coal run and at an intermediate point of the supply run. Mr. Thompson has been a pioneer in belt conveyor transportation underground and his accomplishment here with the first two-way conveyor of any consequence is another notable addition to the art.

The mining executive works in a cyclical industry. His employment is subject to the vagaries of the marketplace. Boom and bust has always been the industry's story. "Big oil" failed in its mining effort. This left emotional and financial scars on many mining families. One must remember that mining executives always play a high-stakes game. Given the cyclical nature of the mining industry, mining executives need to take care of their own financial security. The mining executive that does not plan for his financial security in this cyclical business is playing Russian Roulette with his future. Take a look at those people who have reached their later years with the mining industry. One usually finds three categories of people. Those few in the first group have been fortunate enough to have worked for one company. They have survived the winnowing process of cyclicality, political problems, and takeovers. They have reached normal retirement age. For them, the retirement years are usually comfortable. People in the second group have worked for those same mining companies. But these people have been forced out by early retirement. Or they have been laid off for cyclical, takeover, or political reasons. The third group includes those who have held many positions in the mining industry. Probably not until their later years are they fully vested, if at all, in a pension program. The first small group, then, is the exception. The others, unless they have taken care of their financial security, are doomed to later years of financial problems, stress, and unhappiness. Too late in life, many realize the harsh realities of failure to plan and implement a personal financial program. Mining executives go to some of the world's leading mining schools, to learn how to make money. The curriculum is technically strong. Most mining graduates are familiar with the intricacies of discounted cash flow, present value, and the Hoskold formula. But few of these same mining schools require courses on personal financial planning. Such courses could give mining students a realistic foundation and the mechanisms with which to cope with their cyclical profession. An executive has only three sources of money. He can make money at work. He can put his money to work. Or he can get money from charities, such as government programs. Of these three sources of money, money at work has the best chance of providing financial security in later years. The mining executive must think of the day when he will be too old to work and contribute to the market place. At this point, the quantity and quality of his investments will determine whether his later years will be secure. Along with the Mining Engineering Handbook, two key books should be included in the mining executive's library. These are Venita Van Caspel's The Power of Money Dynamics and Benjamin J. Stein's Financial Passages. These books contain the basic concepts of personal financial planning so critical to an individual's financial survival. Venita points out the simple formula that is the key to financial independence: Time + Money + American Free Enterprise (Rate of Return) = Opportunity to Become Financially Independent Chart 1 shows that this is not a trite formula. The chart shows the dramatic effects of compounding over time. The chart also shows at various yields what a $2000 a year Individual Retirement Account (IRA) contribution will accumulate. Chart 1 (from Money magazine) is based on the future value of an ordinary annuity. It shows that the key to amassing a small fortune by the time a person reaches his 50s is starting to save methodically in his 20s. This, coupled with the highest yields consistent with safety of principal will ensure financial security. There are significant effects from compounding money over time. Every year the decision is put off to save for later years will cost a person dearly by the time he reaches his 50s. For example, consider the decision to put off for one year a $2000 IRA investment at a 12% return. Starting it at age 31 instead of 30 will cost the executive almost $100,000 by age 65. What if the executive waits until age 35 to get started with his $2000 a year investment? He will then lose nearly $400,000 by age 65. Stated another way, the executive costs himself this $400,000 simply because he did not invest $167 a month for five years. $167 a month - that's less than an inexpensive second car payment. This $400,000 pool of money could provide the executive a $40,000 a year income at age 65, assuming a 10% return on invest-

The superconducting performmce of diffusion-processed Nb3Sn is influenced by its micro structure. High isotropic transverse current density may be achieved in this material by a process which forms a precipitate of ZrO, within the Nb3Sn. FOR an ideal type-I1 superconductor, little or no transport current can be carried in the mixed state; i.e., little or no transport current can be carried above the lower critical field H,,, where the field penetrates abruptly in the form of current vortices or fluxoids, even though full transition to the normal state does not occur until the upper critical field H,,.' Fortunately, nonideal type-I1 superconductors can be readily obtained and these carry large transport currents up to the upper critical field H. Both theoretical and experimental investigations have attributed this current-carrying capability for nonideal type-I1 superconductors to pinning of the fluxoid lattice by heterogeneities in the microstructure of the superconducting material. These heterogeneities may take the form of dislocations or dislocation clusters,2"5 grain boundaries: structural imperfections introduced by phase transformations; radiation damage,8"10 or precipitates.11"15 Nb3Sn formed by diffusion processing is a type-I1 superconductor. Heterogeneities are needed for high superconducting critical currents above H,,. This paper will cover: a) what the microstructure of diffusion-processed NbSn looks like; b) what changes in the microstructure take place when the system is doped with precipitates, and c) how these changes in microstructure influence the superconducting critical currents. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Samples. Diffusion processing was used to form the Nb3Sn. The procedure used was as follows: a) coat the surface of a niobium tape with tin; b) heat-treat this tape at a temperature above 930°C to form a layer of Nb3Sn at the Sn-Nb interface. Such a layer of NbsSn is shown in Fig. 1 The thickness of the NbsSn layer formed was controlled by the time and temperature of the heat treatment. The same general procedure was used for preparation of both undoped samples and samples doped with a precipitate. An additional step was included in the preparation of the doped samples which consisted of internal oxidation of zirconium to form ZrOn. The details of the doping process will be reported in a later paper. Sample Testing. The Nb3Sn tape samples were soldered to a copper or brass shunt. Current and voltage leads were then attached to the sample in the usual four-probe resistance measurement configuration. The sample was cooled to 42°K. In some cases it was cooled in the presence of a high magnetic field and in other cases with the field turned off. The results were the same for both cases. The samples were oriented in a configuration with field transverse to current but could be rotated such that the angle between the field vector and the wide side of the tape sample could be changed. Measurements up to 100 kG were done in a superconducting solenoid and measurements above 100 kG in a water-cooled copper magnet at the MIT National Magnet Laboratory. Once the test field was reached, the current in the sample was increased until voltage was detected across the sample. The critical current was taken as the current at which voltage was first detected in excess of background noise. In most cases this was 1 to 2 x 10~6 v for a— in.-wide sample carrying several hundred amperes with a in. separation between voltage leads and with a 10 "-ohm shunt resistance. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Microstructure. Examination of the microstructure of the undoped Nb3Sn shows rather large-diameter (1 to 2 columnar grains growing outward from the niobium surface toward the tin surface. As the layer is made thicker by longer diffusion times, these grains grow longer. Few new grains are started. Transmission electron microscopy shows little or no second-phase material within the bulk of the Nb3Sn layer. The microstructure of a diffusion-processed NbsSn layer changes quite drastically when the system is doped so as to form a precipitate within the NbsSn layer. Instead of large-diameter columnar grains of NbaSn forming, smaller-diameter (0.5 to 1 ) equiaxed grains of Nb3Sn decorated with the precipitate form. Earl C. Herkenhoff Publication of the article "The Flotation Behavior of Digested Asphalt Ridge Tar Sands" by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller has confirmed and again spotlighted a most significant and important development in the field of tar sand and heavy oil mining. This is the ability to recover 95 % of the bitumen in dry tar sands by a hot water process. The initial investigation by Miller and Sepulveda in early 1978, "Separation of Bitumen from Dry Tar Sands," was the first blockbuter. It is disappointing that there has been so little scientific and industry ackowledgement that the authors laid to rest the long entrenched belief that the sand grains had to be "water wetted" for a hot water process to be applicable. Dr. Miller and his researchers at the University of Utah used slightly different mineral dressing terminology in describing their process but it is essentially the old, established technique of high solids attrition scrubbing at elevated temperatures with a conditioner or modifier, followed by dilution and froth flotation. Similar techniques were described in detail for other nonmetallic minerals in the mid-1940s by Stuart Falconer of American Cyanamid Co. The authors used a 15-minute "scrub" period (or in their terminology "digester step") at 73% solids and 95°C (203°F) in a 0.3 m solution of sodium carbonate -about 4 kg/t (8 lb per st) of tar sand. Flotation was at 10% solids. Obviously, the scrub is an expensive step with respect to energy input but the high recovery of bitumen appears to justify it. Two basic questions then arise: • What are the effects of shorter scrubbing time, lower temperature, and less sodium carbonate? • Would a two-stage approach be advantageous? That is, could you get the major proportion of the bitumen with a mild scrub and apply the high power and temperature only to the refractory portion? These variables should be evaluated. Apparently, all results were only for rougher flotation. What would the grade and recovery of bitumen be if multiple cleaner flotation steps were employed? We must concede that a 60-62% grade of bitumen leaves considerable room for upgrading. Finally, it should be noted by all executives who approve funds for heavy oil recovery schemes, most of which are variations of in-situ methods, that mining can yield a 95% recovery of bitumen. That is correct, 95%. Imagine what that does to the total barrels recovered from a heavy oil resource compared with the scrawny 30-35% maximum recovery we are getting now. The conclusion-let's mine heavy oil and tar sands. Reply by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller We, too, share Mr. Herkenhoff s enthusiasm for the mining of tar sands-heavy oil and continue the development of related processing technology. Specifically, it will be noted that by appropriate control of bitumen viscosity in the feed (probably the most important variable for successful separation) the recovery can be accomplished at low digestion temperature and low addition of alkali. A 91 t/d (100 stpd) pilot plant based on our technology is now being operated by Enercor in Salt Lake City (Hatfield, Oblad, and Miller, 1982). In these same pilot facilities, rougher concentrates containing more than 80% bitumen on a dry basis are being produced from Asphalt Ridge Feed. However, the processing of certain other tar sands results in incomplete digestion of bitumen/sand aggregates as discussed elsewhere (Miller and Misra, 1982). Such undigested aggregates are shown in Fig. 1. In this regard, it is intended that a recycle stream will be installed in the pilot plant to provide for redigestion of middling products. Further details regarding surface chemistry aspects of this tar sand technology have recently been published (Misra, Aguilar, and Miller, 1981). The recent discoveries of hydrothermal activity in the ocean off New Zealand have created interest in the business community in the commercial possibilities of mining associated marine polymetallic sulfides. This interest is more so, as this hydrothermal activity is in much shallower depths, between 120 ? 1800 meters, than the typical 2400m in other parts of the oceans. Mining for other ocean deposits around NZ, such as phosphate nodules and off-shore deposits from gold bearing river beds is also attracting interest. The question is: - how can these deposits be mined without spending the enormous sums of money required for specialized mining technology? There are no dedicated off- the-shelf systems designed exclusively for underwater mining. Such systems require expensive development and manufacturing processes and then, are most probably designed for only one specific purpose. The costs involved place such equipment beyond the means of smaller entrepreneurial groups and only the big companies have the resources required. However, large companies are normally reluctant to take the risk of investing large sums of money into deep ocean projects. Australia and New Zealand, until recent times, have been somewhat isolated from European and North American technical resources - especially in the field of underwater technology. Over the past century such isolation has often led to solving problems with what has become locally known as ? ?the number 8 gauge wire method?. This approach to problem solving entails using whatever is available to get the job done and keep costs down. In the old days with NZ technology being mainly based around farming, a piece of No. 8 gauge fencing wire, although not designed for the purpose, was often used to fix various problems ? hence the term.

Members must secure their hotel-accommodations beforehand, by direct correspondence with the hotel they select. For those who neglect this precaution, the Local Committee will doubtless do what it can, but is unable to promise anything. Correspondence concerning this meeting (including notices of intention to attend it) should be addressed hereafter exclusively to Mr. W. G. Miller, Provincial Geologist, Bureau of Mines, Toronto, who is the representative of the Local Committee. The excursion to Cobalt, Lake Tenagami, Sudbury, etc., arranged by that Committee, involves the use of a special Pullman train for meals and lodging. After waiting a reasonable time to hear from members, the Local Committee has made its contract for Pullman cars. According to its latest report, there was still room for additional excursionists. Under this head, application made immediately to Mr. Miller may not be too late. INTRODUCTION In most problcms in reservoir analysis the physical situation is described by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations. The general solution to the set of equations usually comprises a wide range of functions ancl a particular solution is normally selectetl by applying suitable boundary conditions to the problem. In some cases it is clear from the physical situation what form the boundary conditions should take, but it is usually desirable to have an independent mathematical check of the suitability of the chosen conditions. From the mathematical standpoint, a system of partial differential equations with boundary conditions is said to be properly set if the combination determines a unique solution which is continuously dependent on the equation and the boundary conditions. Such a solution is sometimes termed "reasonable". In investigating the properties of the mathematical representation, it is useful to determine the structure of the system by the application of the theory of characteristics. This theory determines in the space of the independent variables, lines or surfaces which play a special role in thc system's behavior. The characteristics determine the possibility and nature of the propagation of discontinuities in the derivatives of the dependent variables. Along the characteristics certain differential relations hold which for some problems allow a so- lution to be obtained analytically. In the case of hyperbolic equations the characteristics can bc used as 3 basis for a numerical solution. If a complicated nonlinear system is to be solved, a study of behavior of the characteristics will indicate what boundary conditions should be chosen. By using the method of characteristics, several advances have rccently been made in solving reservoir engineering problems. Sheldon, Zondek and Cardwell' have discussed how the the method may be used grap-phically to solve the incompressible two-phase displaccmerit problem when the gravity term is included in the equations. Fayers and Perrine' have applied the method to study the equations representing detergent flooding. When compressibility and solution-gas effects are introduced into the two-phase flow problem, the equations and their characteristics become more complicated. It will be seen that in this problem the characteristics are useful for indicating a reasonable set of boundary conditions but cannot readily be used to compute a numerical solution. This problem has been solved on the IBM 701 using normal finite difference methods hy West, Garvin and Sheldon." The material to be prcscntcd in this report is divided into three sections. The first discusses the determination of the characteristics of first and second order partial differential equations; the second describes the selection of suitable boundary conditions by the application of the principle that the future cannot affect the past; the third discusses the use of characteristics for setting the boundary conditions of the two-phase solution-gas flow problem. A useful introduction to the method of characteristics has been given by Hildebrand.' A summary of the method will be given in this section of the paper. GENERAL conditions in the lead industry have registered a distinct improvement. The first signs of a strengthening market were found in an increasing demand for scrap. There is keen competition for old battery plates both by large and small dealers. The large operator smelts them either alone or in combination with ores or other lead-bearing material, giving an antimonial lead for which there is brisk demand. The small operator usually has three alternatives. He may simply melt out the metallics in a kettle at low temperature, giving an antimonial lead and a pulverulent lead oxide; he may fuse under oxidizing conditions, giving a soft lead and lead-antimony slag; or he may fuse under reducing conditions, giving a relatively low-grade antimonial lead and a low-antimony slag. In each case the metal product is used or sold, and the dross or slag sold to a large smelter. It will be interesting to see what the final outcome will be of this situation which is generally conceded to be unsatisfactory.

In April 2013, Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper’s (RTKC) Bingham Canyon mine experienced what is arguably the world’s largest ever in-pit slope failure. The failure initiated along a major, continuous, low-strength bedding fault, named the Manefay bed, and comprised approximately 145Mtonnes of rock and waste dump material. Initial East wall slope deformations were detected some months prior to catastrophic slope collapse by RTKC’s slope monitoring systems. However, the failure mechanism was different to that which had historically been experienced in the prior more-than-100 years of open pit mining. Failure occurred as two separate events, the initial one likely consisting of a frictional failure of rock materials along the Manefay bed itself, before a second phase of failure occurred, which included a large mass of old rail dump material. The combination of these events led to a much larger failure run-out than had been anticipated by the RTKC team which led to loss of, and damage to, mining equipment and infrastructure as well as significant interruption to mining activities. Due to the diligent monitoring of the slopes no safety impacts were experienced at the mine, and as such the details and learnings from this failure can readily be shared with the broader mining and geotechnical industries to avoid similar recurrences elsewhere. INTRODUCTION A company must have an objective, and that usually is to earn money. In some countries an objective can also be to reduce unemployment in an area or to develop nonindustrialized areas. Government-owned companies can also have as an objective that of serving the com¬munity. This discussion is limited to the consideration of normal companies wanting to earn money. Such an objective, however, has to be defined in more detail. It is not satisfactory only to maximize the total annual profit from, for example, a mining project. In comparison with most other branches, the mining in¬dustry is very capital intensive. When starting a new project, the mining company must invest a lot of money in mines, ore treatment plants, etc. It is normally many years before any income is received from the ore. Fig. 14 illustrates the payments for a new mining proj¬ect with an expected lifetime of 10 years. Whether this project is a profitable one depends on a lot of things. If the company has a shortage of money, it can be impossible to finance the project. Even if the company has enough money, the management may think that perhaps the project may not return the money fast enough. Such limitations will not be discussed here. Suppose that the company has internal funds from its own operation or can borrow them. Since the mining company must invest the money in advance, it is not satisfactory only to add all of the costs during the mine's lifetime and compare them with the total income during the lifetime. The company must include the time value of the capital. In this appendix, the basic investment theory neces¬sary to judge the profitability and costs of mining proj¬ects will be discussed. INVESTMENT THEORY Time Value of Money If a private person has a dollar and puts it into a bank, he or she will receive interest. If the interest rate is r%, the value after one year will be $(1 + r), after 2 years $(I + r)2 , etc. The interest rate represents the time value of money. If the same person wants to have $1 in the bank af¬ter one year, he or she has to put $(1 + r)-1 in the bank today. If the person wants $1 after 2 years, it is neces¬sary to put $(1 + r)-2 into the bank today, etc. So one dollar today is worth more than one dollar tomorrow. It is, of course, not correct to compare money at differ¬ent times since each dollar has a different value. It is necessary to transform all payments to the same point in time. That is called the calculation of the capital value of a cash flow, and to do this an interest rate is used. In the same way, the cash flow from a project like that shown in Fig. 14 can be translated to any other point in time. Most common is to translate all payments to the beginning of the mining period. That capital value is often called the present capital value. Interest Rate What interest rate will the company use? A com¬pany, just like an individual, has the basic alternatives of keeping its money in the bank and receiving interest, or borrowing money from a bank and paying an interest rate. The interest rate represents the time value of money for the company. If the company has a shortage of money, or many good potential investment projects, it has to use a higher interest rate than if it has a lot of money available. Most companies also increase their interest rate as a hedge against the risk involved by using money for uncertain investments, because of taxes, etc. Capital Value When the interest rate has been decided, it is possi¬ble to estimate the capital value of a project. Here the discussion will be limited to the estimation of present capital values. Suppose that one wants to know the present capital value of $1 (Fig. 15), which will be received after n years. To transform it n years back in time, one must multiply it by the factor (1 + r)-, where r is the inter¬est rate the company uses. Table 1 gives these factors for different years and interest rates. Example: At the end of year 5 a mining company has to invest $50 million in a new mine. What is the present capital value at the end of year 0? The company uses an interest rate of 15%a.

Fractional replication of factorial design, a general method for planning experimentation and for analysis of data obtained, is described as applied to a flotation investigation. This method leads to determination of optimum process conditions with minimum experimental effort. Its advantages over simple factorial design are demonstrated. A METHOD for planning experimentation and for analyzing the data secured will be demonstrated. This method, termed fractional replication of factorial design, employs a relatively small number of individual experiments to determine which of a large number of process variables are controlling, to determine which combination of levels of these variables is most likely to produce optimum results, and also to predict what results will be obtained with a particular combination of conditions not already tested. Although the general method is not new, having been developed by Finney in 1945,' the extent to which it can improve the effectiveness of applied research generally has not been recognized by metallurgists. The fractional replication procedure is particularly useful in flotation experimentation and an example from such an investigation will be used in the paper. However, it has equal value in any investigation in which similar experimental difficulties are encountered. In developing a flotation process for a particular mineral separation, the investigator is inevitably confronted with the following difficulties: 1—There are a large number of potentially important process variables. 2—Results of individual experiments are not highly reproducible, due in part to the difficulty in precisely controlling all the variables. 3—Considerable effort is expended in conducting individual experiments. 4—There are practical limits on the number of individual experiments which can be made. In situations of just such a type, modern statistical methods of planning experimentation and analyzing data have their greatest value. Applications of one such technique, called factorial design, to problems of this type have been described by Dorenfeld and others.'-' The simple factorial design is an efficient procedure when the investigator hopes to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects and interrelationships of a small number of variables over a limited range. In applied research, this is seldom the main objective. Rather, the investigator usually wishes to determine which of the many potentially important variables are in fact controlling, which levels of the controlling variables will provide opti- mum metallurgical results, and what these results will be at optimum conditions. Interest in detailed trends is limited to the controlling variables and to levels in the region of optimum conditions. Simple factorial design has serious deficiencies for such objectives and is not the most efficient method of experimental design. Deficiencies of Factorial Design In a simple factorial design, an experiment must be made at every possible combination of each level of every variable, once these have been chosen and the levels of each to be included have been decided upon. As the number of variables or levels of each increases, the experimental program quickly reaches prohibitive size. For example, an investigation of only four variables, each at four levels, requires 256 individual experiments. Often upon completion of such an extensive program, it is found that one or more of the variables has metallurgically unimportant effects or that a poor estimate has been made as to the appropriate range of levels to be investigated. The result is that only a small proportion of the data obtained falls in the range of real metallurgical interest. Indeed, it frequently can be anticipated that certain combinations of levels of variables will not produce results of interest, but they still must be included so that the essential balance, or orthogonality, of the design will be retained. It may be true that factorial design will provide the greatest amount of information from a given number of experiments, but it does not necessarily follow that it will lead to the desired information with a minimum number of experiments. Much of the information provided may be of little value. Advantages of Fractional Replication The disadvantages of simple factorial design are overcome to a great extent by a modification known as fractional replication. This is a technique for sampling systematically the potential data of a full factorial experiment, that is, the data which would have been obtained if the complete factorially designed program had been completed. Only a fraction of the total array of experiments is made, but the experiments are chosen in such a way that the important advantages of factorial design and the accompanying analysis of variance are retained. The data obtained from the first group of experiments are used to determine which of several variables are controlling and which levels of these variables are most likely to produce the desired result. McKeever was introduced by Past President Edward F. Ziolkowski, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Energy Development Company in Hanna, Wyoming. MR. ZIOLKOWSKI: The first order of business this morning is to introduce the president and for a business meeting as well as other items on the program. It is my pleasure to introduce Ira McKeever to you this morning. Ira was born and raised in Kit Carson, Colorado, and served in the U.S. Navy prior to obtaining his geological engineering degree in 1952 from Colorado School of Mines in Golden. He then spent the next 20 years involved in mining sulphur, pot ash and coal with Texas Gulf Sulphur at that time and Gulf Resources Chemical Corporation. In 1972 he joined W. R. Grace & Co. as president of the Mining Division, Natural Resources Group. He was named Colowyo Coal Company's president and general manager in 1976 to develop what is currently Colorado's largest coal surface mining operation. Last year he became W. R. Grace's president of Western Mining Operations which is the position he presently holds. Ira is active in civic affairs; he is currently serving on the Colorado Energy Impact Assistance Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Colorado's Metropolitan Water Roundtable, he is also a director of Project Colorado, a member of the committee for the Colorado Division of Commerce and Industry. He has, in the past, served as chair- man of the Craig Hospital Board. In 1967 Ira was the recipient of the Colorado School of Mines van Diest Gold Medal Award, and in 1981 was given the individual service award for outstanding accomplishments in the field of health, promotion, physical fitness by Colorado's Governor's Council for the Health and Promotion of Physical Fitness. Memberships are also held in Denver Coal Club, the Colorado Mining Association, and the American Mining Congress. Will you please welcome Ira McKeever? I do have one other piece of business here. So I've got a few more years hopefully to be with you and this wonderful industry that we represent. Thank you Ed. I realize now more than ever, the tremendous effort that you put in the program last year and the magnitude of the job that is placed in the presidency of the Institute. It was indeed with tremulous hands that I undertook to lead the Institute this year, and I found a tremendous amount of strength and guidance in my friend Ed whom we've known since college days and worked together. On behalf of that lifetime of memories and good thoughts, Ed, I would like to present to you a little token of appreciation. 1 would like to join Ed in welcoming you all to Vail. Ed arranged the weather, 1 arranged the program along with Charlie Margolf. This is the 70th regular meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute; and in accepting the leadership a year ago, 1 obligated one very special person to fill the role of chairlady and hostess for this meeting. I would like to have you all, if you haven't already, meet my wife, Linda. I would like to thank her publicly for her guidance and help she continues to provide me. It's absolutely necessary that you also meet and recognize Charlie Margolf our program chairman who will be helping through the meeting to present and monitor our program; and anyone who knows Charlie knows the sincerity and dedication he brings to anything or any phase of life he touches. [Executive Director’s note: According to 17th edition of the ISEE Blasters Handbook in its section on trench blasting, “...consideration must be given to the proper venting of gases generated from the blasting. Should those gases spread laterally rather than vent directly to the surface, the gases may travel underground and finally vent well outside of the planned area. Such events may be caused by the strata, soil conditions or root systems, or existing and/or abandoned utilities or other man-made structures. In the worst situation, gases resulting from the detonation such as CO2, CO, and/or NOx may travel through the strata and find their way into basements of nearby homes or businesses. The IME has recommendations on how to minimize this potential problem. Some of the points include removing the overburden and digging the rock immediately after the shot, and drilling vent holes periodically between the ditch and adjacent homes.” The Board of Directors of the International Society of Explosives Engineers has expressed its concern that blasters be made aware of the issue of migration of carbon monoxide resulting from blasting operations.
