Turner Valley is in the foothills of the Rocky mountains, at an altitude of 4,000 feet, and is 42 miles south west of Calgary. The present producing area is 8 miles long by 1 1/2 miles wide, while drilling is being carried on over an area of 10 miles by 2 miles . There are 32 wells producing, 26 wells drilling, and 17 wells shut down, making a total of 75 wells, which range in depth from 2,160 feet to 5,900 feet, varying according toa the well location on the anticline centre wells being shallower than those located on the flank. The first indication of possible production in this field was a gas seepage on the banks of Sheep river, in what is now the Royalite plant yard (Figure 1). Geologically, this seepage proved to be located on an anticline running through the valley in a southwesterly direction. The Calgary Petroleum Products Company was formed in 1912, and under the direction of Mr. A. W. Dingman, President, and associates, the first well was drilled. Production was obtained in this well. Gas was found in several horizons from 884 feet to 3,960 feet, and oil at 1,557, 2,718 and 3,839 feet. In May, 1914, oil was struck at a depth of 3,839 feet, this being a light straw-coloured oil of 60 gravity, which was blown spraying from the well accompanied by three to four million feet of gas. The latter contained some 200 grains of hydrogen sulphide per 100 cu. ft., giving it the disagreeable odour so well known in Turner Valley gas. This strike caused considerable excitement and started the famous 1914 boom, when some 400 oil companies were formed. The well referred to produced from two to five barrels of 60 gravity oil per day, and 4,000,000 cu. ft. of gas. The oil was used in the crude form in cars and trucks.

Location and History The Sherritt Gordon mine is in northern Manitoba, one hundred miles north of The Pas and forty miles northeast of Flin Flon. The original discovery was made by a Cree indian, Philip Sherlett, in 1922. The claims lapsed in 1924 to be re-staked and optioned by various mining groups who carried out a certain amount of development work before relinquishing their options. In 1927 the present Company, Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, was formed to take over the property. Production commenced in 1931, but in the following year operations were suspended and it was not until 1937 that the prevailing price of copper pemitted resumption as an economic operation. The mine has operated continuously from that time to the present. Total production to the end of 1947 has been: Copper . . . . . . . . . 301,813 . .,345 pounds Zinc . . . . . . . . . . . 112,636 tons of concentrat (50% zinc) Gold . . . . . . . . . . 83,070 ounces Silver . . . . . . . . . 2,651,317 ounces General Geology The consolidated rocks in the vicinity of the mine, all of Precambrian age, are a series of gneisses and form a part of a great area of what are known as the Kisseynew gneisses. The Sherritt is the only known economic base-metal deposit to occur within the Kisseynew series. Extreme metamorphism has produced recrystallization that has imparted a decided igneous-like texture to many of the units. However, the gneisses are predominantly of sedimentary original although the most basic member, a hornblendegarnet gneiss, is considered to be an altered basic flow. Figure 1 illustrates the intricately folded structure and the succession of roe types. The footwall enclosing members are of sedimentary origin and represent quartzite and arkosic and greywacke derivatives. The contact footwall member is gneissic quartzite, a medium to coarse grained rock composed mainly of quartz with minor altered feldspar (orthoclase and plagioclase), muscovite, chloritized biotite, and magnetite. Most phases of this unit show varying degrees of granitization.

"Complex research of flotation concentrates of monomineral fractions of chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, pyrrhotite included methods of adsorption of collectors, surface compounds by IR ATR, and surface films of flotoreagents by TEM. They revealed that the proportion of the parts of thionocarbamate (TC) and dithiophosphate had an effect on the adsorption rate of the components of minerals, on the presence of characteristic bands, and, what is an important, visualized surface film of organic flotation reagents on the particles of concentrates by TEM. The predominance of thionocarbamate in a composition selectively increases the adsorption rate constant of the components and recovery of chalcopyrite compared with sphalerite and galena. The highest flotation rate using TC is characteristic for chalcopyrite (0.62 min- 1) in case of individual use, and it's in combination with butyl xanthate (25% butyl xanthate or 3:1) 0.89 min-1 too. We studied the ternary blend - dithiophosphate: thionocarbamates: butyl xanthate. The increase of the proportion of butyl xanthate in combination reduces the contrast of the flotation rate among all sulfides.Practice flotation of refractory sulfide copper-zinc ores of the Urals (content sulfide iron - 75- 95%) confirmed that the use of a combination of selective collectors increases selective recovery of copper sulfide minerals up to 50% at the first fraction that is the conditioned copper concentrate. New selective sulfhydryl collectors resulted in high levels of recovery of copper into a concentrate - more than 90% - against 70-72% (butyl xanthate) from copper-pyrite ore. Low floatability of iron sulfides has been obtained by selective sulfhydryl collectors. Using weak selective sulfhydryl collectors can reduce pH into collective or selective flotation from pH 10-10.5 to pH = 7.2-7.5, which improves the quality of individual concentrates of nonferrous metals and their recovery. The same is true for polymetalic sulfide ore. The volume of gold recovery also increased."

Introduction This surprisingly little-known group of minerals, the nonmetallics, so-called for their lack of metallic luster, is the largest group of the mineral kingdom, and cinstitutes perhaps 75 percent of all mineral species. For the most part, these minerals are compounds of the common acids, oxides, hydroxides, and two elements, carbon and sulfur. The list of the non- metallic minerals, therefore, is very long. It includes the borates, carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, phosphates, silicates, sulfates, and less commonly, arsenates, chromates, molybdates, suliides, tungstates, and vanadates, the latter groups, and many of the oxides, being sought principally for their metal content. Those nonmetallics used commercially are generally called the industrial minerals, although in addition this term also includes a considerable group of rocks. The list of industrial minerals and rocks is continually growing as new uses are found, and it now numbers over 300 commodities. The industrial minerals industry has developed since about 1920. There- fore, the development has been fast, and it has been more or less parallel with the development of the art of minerals beneficiation. General Discussion of the Group This group is so heterogeneous that it has defied logical, or widely accepted, classification, whether by origin, composition, or end use, and perhaps for this reason the industrial minerals generally have received short shrift in both teaching and research. Except for those involved with asbestos, cement, fertilizers, gypsum, salt, sand and gravel, few large companies have deigned to enter the field, and consequently most industrial minerals have been developed for the most part by the small operators or entrepreneurs. Yet surprisingly, except for one war year, the nonmetallics have always surpassed the metals in value and tonnage (Fig. 1). One main characteristic that most of the nonmetallics have in common is direct sensitivity to labor and transportation. In other words they are characterized by large bulk and low-unit value, and hence have what might be termed a "place value".

The Otago Goldfield has produced approximately 8 million ounces of alluvial gold and over 2.5 million ounces of hard rock gold and is currently home to New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. In the eyes of explorers this production history makes the goldfield a good place to explore.   Modern exploration in the Otago Goldfield commenced in the late 1970s with the exploration for tungsten. However, a rapid rise of the gold price in the early 1980s saw the focus shift to the exploration for gold which lead to the discovery of the Macraes Gold Project in 1984, which since it came into production in 1990 has been New ZealandÆs largest producing gold mine. With the exception of the Macraes Gold Project, exploration continued in the Otago Goldfield for a further 20 years without further success.   In 2006, Glass Earth (NZ) Limited (Glass Earth) reviewed all the exploration technologies applied to the Otago region and available geological data, including the 1996 OceanaGold Helicopter Electro-Magnetic (HEM) data, and concluded that combined magnetics and HEM were able to delineate the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) which hosts the Macraes Gold Project. Unlike previous explorers who explored the Otago region in a piecemeal manner, Glass Earth opted to collect a new, region-wide dataset which could be integrated with all previous collected geological information to come up with new exploration concepts and targets. As part of this process, Glass Earth applied in mid 2006 for New ZealandÆs largest on-shore gold Prospecting Permit, PP39-322 which was subsequently granted in November 2006. In mid January 2007, Glass Earth commenced acquisition of approximately 50 000 line kilometres of HEM data, making the Otago regional aerial geophysical survey (survey) the largest aerial geophysical survey ever undertaken in New Zealand.   This paper will report on the progress of the Otago Regional aerial geophysical survey and outline some of the preliminary findings from what is still a work in progress.

"For moisture samples, the International Standard for iron ore sampling states the following: Moisture samples shall be processed as soon as possible and test portions weighed immediately. If this is not possible, samples shall be stored in non-absorbent airtight containers with a minimum of free air space to minimise any change in moisture content, but should be prepared without delay. ISO 3082 (2009)Prescribing what to do is of course easy. Putting it in practice is, however, a little more problematic.The iron ore industry has seen quite some changes in the last ten to 15 years, such as: a large increase in the volume of seaborne trade new ore types and blends coming onto the market new mines, processing plants and port facilities producing more and loading faster an increase in wet processed ore products a dramatic rise and then equally dramatic fall in the iron ore price followed by a recent recovery.All of the above have had an effect on sampling facilities. The large increase in volume coupled with ambitions such as labour efficiency, safer operations and higher precision has driven the installation and retrofitting of automated sampling and robotic sampling preparation plants in order to keep up with increased quality control.Designers of sampling facilities are invariably instructed to build plants that comply with ISO 3082. In general this means that the plants are compliant in respect of the number of primary increments, gross sample masses and sample division rules. The clause at the beginning of this abstract is mostly overlooked as it only appears in a section (4.1) describing the basic requirements of a sampling system.An error of 0.1 per cent in moisture changes the value of 1 Mt of iron ore at US$50/t by US$50 000. At 700 Mt/a of Australian iron ore exports, this is US$35 M. Frequently, errors from 0.5 to 1 per cent in moisture measurements are encountered.In comparison an error of 0.1 per cent Fe is US$0.081 (US$50/t and 62 per cent Fe base) per tonne, that is US$81 000 per Mt or about US$51 M for the same Australian annual iron ore exports.It is somewhat mystifying that we in the ISO Technical committees spend extraordinary energy (= money and time) on improving measurement techniques, whilst the big costs are in sampling errors. The Sigma-Lamaque Complex is considered a lode-gold deposit characterized by narrow vein structures, which have been mined historically by underground methods. In addition to the narrow vertical structures, mining also took place on horizontal veins, ?North Dipper? veins and dykes mineralized with sub-horizontal veins and stringers. Over the 60 + years of production, mining took place to a depth of 1.8 km. The upper portion of the deposit was considered all but exhausted, when viewed from an underground mining perspective. The year 1998 is considered a turning point for the Complex when a small open pit was mined at Sigma. The resource evaluation methods used underground were applied to surface mining, which allowed small pits to be mined. The resource evaluation method considered only the narrow vertical structures and was not well adapted to open pit mining. As a consequence, resources were consistently under evaluated. It became clear that a new geological approach was necessary to more accurately define resources (i.e., what was being mined). In order to integrate all characteristics (geometry, mechanics and chronology) of this complex lode-gold deposit, a new geological model was proposed. Due to this new approach, dating to February 2000 and updated in December 2000, the reserves evaluated in the first 180 meters now stand at 15 million tonnes @ 2.61 g/t Au (1,265,350 oz). Those reserves cover an east-west corridor extending 1,500 m by 750 m.

My paper relates to bond's third theory of comminution and suggests work be used as a basis for designing crushing and screening plants, this will give more accuracy than existing methods, As stated in the abstract, this paper is only a synopsis of my official paper, many of the questions that might arise in this brief address will be answered by referring to the detail i n the main paper $ Because of the limited time available and the fact that many people here do not need to study the aspects of crushing and screening in depth, i will highlight-those sections of the paper which show how major capital, operating and energy cost savings can be achieved in the process, I will develop the theme in the following manner, Firstly, pointing out, why a new approach is needed to the fundamentals of crushing and screening, Secondly, by setting forth some theory to describe what we are trying to accomplish, Thirdly, by looking at important factors which need to be observed in designing plants and applying machines to comply with this theory, Lastly, i will put forth some ideas on how we might develop this theory to make the industry more efficient, At the outset, i have to say my approach to this process is entirely new, for those used to applying machines and designing plants on existing criteria, they will find this theory easier

End-of-life Electronic and Electrical Equipment, o_cially called WEEE, is unjustly regarded as mainly a waste management problem. What is structurally overlooked is the enormous resource impact of these devices. EEE rep- resents a tremendous metal resource, which should be uti- lized through e_ective recycling, which has a much lower environmental footprint than primary production. The actual amount of end-of-life EEE recycled today is embar- rassingly low since insu_cient EEE is collected and part of the collected EEE is exported to developing countries, where it is largely not entering o_cial recycling systems. To achieve a global recycling society issues like technol- ogy, economics, life cycle structure, stakeholder aware- ness and legislation have to be addressed in a global, co-operative manner so that sustainable closed product cycles can be obtained. Requirements for a "global re- cycling society" are de_ned to address today's reality of global ows of used consumer products, taking into ac- count the likely needs of the future.

The ability to design a beneficiation process for a new orebody based on particular feed characteristics is a powerful and practical tool. A new technique has been developed where beneficiation outcomes can be calculated by combining feed size-by-size chemical analysis, mineralogy, liberation and particle characteristics with a series of simple theoretical unit separation models rather than a simple mass balance approach or an exhaustive beneficiation test program. The new technique provides the ability to rapidly identify ore types that have the potential to meet product specifications whilst also rejecting others that will not meet specification even if a perfect separation was achieved. Beyond the broad scale decision making process, practical mineral separation curves from actual plant data can be used to more closely simulate the proposed process. This approach reduces the amount of laboratory and pilot plant work necessary by targeting what process stages will be required, increases early rejection of uneconomic options, identifies problematic ore types or unit operations and is a step towards estimation of final grade and recoveries achievable in potential circuit configurations.

In the course of the development of the Red Coulee field, northwest of Coutts, Alberta, a considerable amount of information has been gathered by the Department of the Interior regarding the chemical character of waters encountered in the drilling of wells in this area. The writer, in this paper, has undertaken to assemble the available material with the idea of deducing what relations, if any, may exist between the different waters from the same well, and also how these compare with waters encountered in similar horizons in other wells. From no other district, with which the Department of the Interior has had to do, have there been received so many samples of water, and yet not all the waters logged in the drilling reports were sent in for analysis. The information, therefore, herein contained is not as complete as the writer would have desired, but sufficient evidence has been accumulated to indicate some very definite tendencies in the chemical nature of the waters of this field. The drilling of Red Coulee wells has been carried out exclusively by percussive tools. These permit 'dry' drilling, and, consequently, water-sands are recognized when encountered. Had rotary tools been used, information regarding water-sands would have been very meagre, if not entirely lacking, since, in the mudding-off process, water-sands would have been overlooked, with the result that, should water break through into a completed well, its source would not be known and remedial efforts would be greatly handicapped, if not entirely defeated.

OUTSTANDING FACTORS that have largely induced the current great interest in the reopening of old mines and the search for new deposits are the increased relative value of gold, the certainty of a market for it, and the decreased activity and poor profits in other lines of endeavor. It is easy to understand why a miner out of a job and unable to find any other means of livelihood would naturally take to the hills with his pan, pick, and shovel; but never before have inexperienced, would-be prospectors and placer miners materialized from the factories and farms, the haberdasheries, and the oil and gasoline supply stations, in such numbers as the last couple of years have witnessed, except when rich strikes of the proportions of a Klondike have been made. What, may one ask, has occasioned this condition? Unemployment has put these men in a receptive frame of mind, and newspaper and magazine articles have done the rest-- The Gold Miner of Los Angeles (a new weekly), The Mid- Week Pictorial (New York) for Sept. 3, 1932, and Popular Science Monthly for August, 1932, for instance. Even the Saturday Evening Post had an article on a promising part of Colorado. Stories that good wages may be had for the panning in nearly every western state have been featured by daily papers, popular "scientific" magazines, and quasi- technical journals. These tales have been eagerly grasped by thousands of people whose ignorance of mining has only served to increase their enthusiasm.

Of these, 11 were in the industrialized world, 13 in the Third World. By 1985, the number had dramatically surged to a world-wide total of 145, with the greatest growth among the developing countries to 110, an increase of almost 1000%.

"Ed Rapp is among those who believe in the saying that necessity is the mother of all invention. Rapp is the president of Caterpillar’s mining group. As such, he is tasked with leading the world’s largest mining equipment maker, and its customers, through this time of lower commodity prices, while also positioning his company to be prepared for better days that lie ahead.The decade-long mining boom fueled by growth in emerging markets and demand for commodities that led to record prices for some metals paused in 2008 with the global financial crisis. However, according to Rapp, thanks to stimulus packages around the world, and in particular the stimulus from China that was focused on infrastructure, the mining sector recovered fairly quickly, and from 2010 to 2012, mining was strong.And then the stimulus stopped. Credit dried up and global growth began to slow down and, in the three years since, commodity prices have declined by an average of 60 percent. Caterpillar expanded during the boom, acquiring Bucyrus, and investing billions into the mining sector. It has felt the pinch of the slowdown as much as any mining company in the world. These pages, and those of other mining publications as well as mainstream media, have been filled with stories of doom and gloom about the industry. But Rapp, while acknowledging that the difficult times have been painful, also said Caterpillar sees opportunity in the slow down and reaffirmed his company’s commitment to the mining industry as absolute."

Thirty years ago it was possible to locate a quarry site for crushed rock for concrete aggregate by finding the nearest solid rock bluff accessible by road, But times have changed and the location of a quarry site to furnish crushed rock for concrete aggregate now has become rather complicated, Although both sand and gravel can be used for aggregate, this discussion will be confined to crushed rock in the regions around a metropolitan area. Let us assume that a consultant has been retained to advise on the desirability, and the possibility, of opening a new quarry within a given area. The problems are geological and ecological. Since the geological problems are simpler, they will be discussed first. Generally, the first step is to make a market study of competitive aggregate sources within the projected area. Assuming that the quality of aggregate to be sold by competitors as well as their mining costs will, within narrow limits, be the same, the problem becomes essentially a study of haulage costs from established quarries into the projected new area. Since haulage cannot be effected along straight lines and since each quarry operator may have different unit haulage costs, a map showing lines of increasing cost intersecting points on roads available for truck haulage radiating from competitive quarries can be rather complicated. "GENUINE CONCERN for the environment is a built-in attitude of mind. If you do not have it by age 40 you probably never will. Some people speak the jargon of 'environment' and 'ecology' for political reasons, others because it feeds their need and bias toward attitudes of moral indignation or dissent. Others pay lip-service for purely business reasons. Complete reactionaries equate conservationists, ecologists and environmentalists as either 'commies' or 'pinkos'. Their real credo is the old saying, ""Where there's muck there's brass."" Those who have genuine concern for good environment are not only romantics like Thoreau but realists who sense the danger to our planet if human greed is rampant and unchallenged. The cities are in real trouble. Almost 75 per cent of the population already live in and around cities. Even mining men live in cities or bring up their children in the new 'instant' towns. The ecology of cities is the concern of all. Our distinguished guest Stewart Udall, in his book ""The-Quiet Crisis,"" quoted Thoreau in 1859 as having written ""each town should have a miniature wilderness park, a primitive forest of five hundred or a thousand acres where a stick should never be cut for fuel, a common possession forever."" Mr. Udall will be glad to know that this advice was taken in at least one instance known to me. I refer to Stanley Park in Vancouver. It is a primitive forest of 1000 acres right inside our small downtown peninsula. It remains unmanicured. This month we celebrated the completion of a seawall of 4%, miles along its perimeter. The construction of this wonderful walkway started in 1910. We are very, very proud of our park."

Mining hoists are major components of any underground mine, however, the detailed design work required to get the actual power required for a particular hoist is outside the scope of preliminary feasibility studies. Nonetheless, a hoist is costly. Therefore, an accurate estimate is needed for the design parameters and the power required. There are two methods available, namely, the O’Hara method and the Society of Mining Engineers’ method. Tests were done for both methods employing nine friction hoists and 19 drum hoists currently in use at Canadian mines. The O’Hara method provided unacceptable results for both friction and drum hoists. While, the SME method was designed for American regulations and factors of safety which often differ significantly from Canadian ones, good results were obtained. The two relationships deter-mined were simply to add 5% to friction hoist design and to add 4% to drum hoist design. Modifying the SME method by these two factors will allow the hoisting system determined by the SME method to be within the error for a prefeasibility study.

Common dry batteries use zinc as the negative electrode. Producers commonly use additives such as mercury to prevent corrosion and to increase the mechanical resistance of the zinc anode. Alkaline batteries also contain it, as an anti-corrosive agent. When mixed with the common municipal solid waste, heavy metals as zinc and mercury pollute soil and ground water supplies, moving to the food-chain and affecting human health. Due to these possible damages, this kind of waste must be properly disposed, or recycled. Thus, even in low amounts (ppm) in batteries, mercury has to be eliminated or, at least, its content should be reduced. This work presents the use of pyromettalurgical processes, to reduce mercury content and recover zinc. The tests involved batteries treatment at temperatures from 300° to 1000°C. Mercury is eliminated up to 650°C, and zinc is evaporated at higher temperature treatment. C

Following on from the article in Materials World February 2015 (Asset 997) this article is the second half of a special focus on graphite. It looks at graphite's market prospects over the next few years. Natural graphite is used in refractories, which accounts for ca. 20% of global demand and is forecast to grow by 2-4%/a to 2020, while the largest growth in demand (increases of 10-15%/a) is estimated to come from its application in anodes for lithium-ion batteries, especially those in hybrid electric vehicles. High-grade natural graphite deposits that are either coming back on stream or are in the pipeline are discussed including Woxna mine in Sweden, Bissett Creek project in Ontario, Canada, Balama mine in Mozambique and Lac Knife project in Quebec, Canada

The aim of the circular economy is to accelerate the transition from a conventional linear take-make-dispose economic model to a circular model. It is restorative and regenerative by design and aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times. This extended abstract presents a brief overview of the circular economy, provides application of the circular economy in other industrial sectors including the downstream metals value chain and proposes how circular economy thinking could progress the development of complex orebodies.CITATION: Corder, G, 2018.
