In the bench blasting, the realisation of an economic, and safe blasting is only possible with a reliable blasting design on condition that considering all sequential activities such as drillingblasting, excavation-loading, haulage, crushing (especially primer crushing). Here what we mean with a good, and reliable design is that ensures an almost displaced, adequately swelled muckpile with desired fragmentation degree for the loaders effectivity, and succesive usage. Meanwhile it must also has no environmental problems such as ground vibration, air blast, and rock flyings, or at least these matters have to be minimised. Two main parameters which have generally being questioned to achieve a safe and economic design on any rock conditions, are specific charge, and burden. In the condition of determining these elements, the other blasting parameters could be calculated according to them, and the blasting design could be completed. Within the scope of this study, it was aimed to determine the optimal blasting conditions of gypsum which is major rock unit of overburden at Sivas Celestine open pit mine. First of all, the engineering (mass, and material) and digging difficulty classifications of gypsum were done according to the current classification systems by using the results of field and laboratory studies. Then the blasting system which was being used on all rock units, was considered, and the necessary data were obtained. After previewing the site properties, predesigns were done, and applied by adopting Langefors design model. The necessary adjustments were done before, during, and after the shots, and the applications were observed. In order to determine, and record the data from each shots properly, a practical form was developed, and all data were transfered to these forms which give information about the blasting results such as muckpile displacement, and height, average particle size, back break, and rock fly existence, number of boulders etc. The blasting parameters such as burden, hole diameter, hole inclination, the amount and position of primers, bench height, delay sequence, and blasting geometry were considered for the iteration of each shots. During the applications, ANFO, gelatine dynamite, and electric delay detonators were used as explosives.

What is the most practical method for storing a huge quantity of crude oil for a long period of time to assure availability if conditions curtail the source of supply? Underground storage is a logical answer. But can abandoned mines be used for this purpose? That is the proposal Fenix & Scisson International, Inc. submitted to the S.F.F. Association (acting in behalf of the Department of Industries of the Republic of South Africa), Johannesburg, South Africa, in October 1966. This engineering and contracting firm with headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma, specializes in underground storage; and based upon previous experiences their engineers were reasonably certain that a mine could be used for storing crude oil. The answer subsequently proved to be "yes." The result was con- version of a coal mine to provide storage for a quantity of crude oil which is the equivalent of a sizeable oil field. The total cost of purchasing, testing, and converting the mine was less than 15 percent of the cost of conventional steel tanks. Operating and maintenance costs are proving to be about 2 percent of those experienced at two large tank farms owned and operated by the Association.

The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company has been in the business of mining and exploration since its incorporation in 1906. The Company has reports written as early as 1890. Consequently, its files contain a very large number of reports, and also of maps, of ail descriptions. REPORTS Before describing the filing of maps, a brie{ note on our general system of filing reports will perhaps clarify the discussion. Reports of a non-periodic nature, primarily those based upon examinations by field engineers, are separated from all other data and filed in what we know as the Mine Series System. Each property on which reports are written is given a serial number, known as the Mine Series Number. This serial number is assigned at the time the first report is filed and it remains permanently identified with the property, regardless of its state of activity. Our mine series numbers now total over 5,000. The serial number for a property may be found by referring to an alphabetical index of properties. Methods employed to beneficiate ores utilize relatively few fundamental principles to effect size reduction and concentration. In crushing and grinding only impact and compressive forces with a minor amount of shear are employed. In concentration, gravity, magnetic, electrostatic and flotation constitute the major methods of concentration with minor use of sizing, hand picking and adhesion. This industry, as all others, can expect in the near future to see the development of new techniques for improved efficiency, cost reduction, and exploitation of raw materials hitherto considered unmanageable. NATURAL AND INDUCED RADIOACTIVITY At the Canadian Department of Mines in Ottawa in 1946, C. M. Lapointe developed a picker belt system whereby radioactive ores could be concentrated by electromechanical means. This invention ultimately led to development of what is now refer- red to as the Lapointe Picker and which has been used commercially at Port Radium and Port Hope for the upgrading of jig concentrates. Basically, the system consisted of conveying sized uranium ore on a belt under a radioactivity detection device which in turn electronically operated a kicker or plunger that separated the ore from the gangue constituents. Thus, a new principle for mineral concentration, radioactivity, was introduced commercially.

For a project located in Docklands Victoria, a high-rise development was proposed where the geology comprised soils of various compositions and consistencies to approximately 50m deep before being underlain by a siltstone bedrock. Due to the structural loads and spatial constraints, the majority of the foundation piles were designed to be socketed into the siltstone. Key factors in selecting the Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) technique as an effective piling solution are explained. These factors included structural and geological considerations, piling rig capabilities, pile testing regime to verify load performance and integrity, the extensive suite of construction quality controls and instrumentation records required while also achieving an appropriate piling budget and program. This paper also described how these factors underpinned the design approach of the final piling scheme. Critical aspects considered during construction and post-construction quality and pile testing records required to meet and satisfy the strict project piling specifications are also presented. The project adopted what may be considered the “best practice” in deep CFA piling. To the author’s knowledge, this project achieved the record for the deepest CFA piles in Australia where multiple piles to 53.8m deep were constructed.

As yet, it is unknown just how these adapted plants and animals will tolerate industrial development. Our work, sponsored by university, government and industry, is part of an effort to evaluate this developmental impact. Our present studies and the results to date will be discussed. Other problems to which the environmental student may address himself in the future to ensure against environ-mental degradation will be suggested.

"THE NOVA SCOTIA TECHNICAL COLLEGE has been granting degrees in mining engineering since 1909. The college was established in 1907 to provide the final two years of the undergraduate program in engineering the earlier years of which are given at several small universities scattered around the Atlantic Provinces. Since the beginning of the program, 251 Bachelor of Engineering degrees have been awarded in mining engineering. Although the average class size has been small, increases in enrolment in the past few years have resulted in Nova Scotia Technical College being the second largest mining department in Canada, based on the number of graduates per year. This year 18 students received B.Eng. degrees, and next year 17 will graduate.In 1968, it was necessary to make a decision on whether or not to abandon, for economic reasons, the program in mining engineering. For several years enrolment had been very low and resignations among the mining engineering staff created a situation in which the program could easily have been dropped. However, it was decided to continue mining engineering, as it was the only such program in the Atlantic Provinces. New staff members with many years of practical experience in the mineral industry, not only in Canada but in the U.S.A., South America, Africa and the U.K., joined our department. At the same time the enrolment in mining engineering began to increase significantly."

The link between geostatistics and Theory of Sampling (TOS) is examined again in view of new findings made while trying to compare predicted sampling variances and estimated grades (using geostatistics) on the same material, and this provides an important consistency requirement whenever calculations are made that involve both theories in a comparative way. The first time that a geologist is confronted with the necessity of evaluating a lateritic ore deposit, he may feel that nothing could be easier. Why should there be any problems in making an economic evaluation of a relatively flat-lying, surficial ore body? After several hundred thousand dollars worth of frustrating work often culminating in a series of non-reproducible data - the evaluator may be a sadder and wiser man. This paper will try to illustrate why the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits is among the most difficult problems confronting an economic geologist - and, more especially, how this problem can be solved. Volumes have been published on descriptive and genetic studies of lateritic ores. Obviously, there is time today only for the briefest description of such an ore body. The laterite is a soil formed under tropical conditions and resulting in the concentration, within the soil zone, of certain tri-valent metals.- especially, aluminum and nickel. The soil zone is divided into two parts: (a) the true soil or lateritic zone and (b) the zone of, partially altered bed rock or saprolite. When metallurgical plants are designed, a lot of consideration is almost always given to material selection and possible damage mechanisms. Materials engineers are generally involved and will strive to select optimal alloys or refractories for the design conditions. Once in operation however, things often change. Equipment is overstressed to increase production, corrosive leaks are not always promptly addressed, proper welding procedures are disregarded, etc. This paper describes various cases from the mining and metals industry where serious mishaps, associated consequences, and costs could have been avoided if simple and proactive steps had been taken. It also presents a strategy, based on safety reviews, to help predict and prevent damage to critical pieces of equipment.

The relative infrequency of fatalities and other serious events can give them an appearance of being random, of being beyond any reasonable degree of anticipation and prevention. In fact, the vast majority of these events result from exposures that are identifiable, measurable, and manageable. The lessons of prominent incidents, such as the Space Shuttle Columbia, OxyÆs Piper Alpha, Esso Longford, BP Texas City, Massey Mine, as well as lessons from single fatality events, is that alongside the proximate causes of each incident, there also coexisted an underlying fabric of systems, mechanisms, and culture that allowed risk in the workplace to persist and often to become normalised. All of these ingredients of the organisationÆs safety fabric lend themselves to the influence and intervention of senior leaders. The difficulty is that traditional injury prevention paradigms are not sufficient for addressing the precursors that lead up to catastrophic and fatal events. A recent study of such events, led by Dr Thomas Krause concluded that the descriptive aspect of HeinrichÆs safety triangle is useful, but that the predictive aspect is not. The study surfaced reasons why a reduction in less serious injuries does not necessarily correspond to a proportionate reduction in catastrophic and fatal risks. This presentation expands on the findings to include the concept of exposure to the event potential linked to precursor events and the framework for leading an organisation to be both cognisant and effective in eliminating such events.CITATION:Russell, R, 2012. "A slurry is any combination of liquids and solids where solids make up more than 10 percent of the mixture. Mining operations create various types of slurries from processes such as dewatering, bitumen extraction in oil sands, concentrator plants, milling operations, tailings, lime addition and so on. The mines then transport these slurries through pipelines (Fig. 1).Slurry valves are used when the mine needs to transport ore a long distance and there are no other viable transportation methods, such as roads or railroads.Severe service valves must be used in slurry applications and they must be tested to ensure reliability. This article describes how Emerson designs and tests its Fisher valves for use in mining slurry applications.Slurry pipeline valvesWithin a slurry pipeline system, valves are required as part of the pumping stations, choking stations and isolation stations. There may be multiple pumping stations depending on the length of the pipeline or the terrain it crosses. Choking stations are used to reduce the velocity and the pressure in the pipeline, either before a pumping station or at the end of the pipeline, and to ensure the pipeline does not slack (remains full and pressurized). Isolation stations exist so that a pig (a device sent through a pipeline to clean or inspect the pipe) can be inserted or removed from the pipeline.Typical valves used in a slurry pipeline are severe service ball valves. The valves use floating balls that are held between the seats and are not pinned or permanently attached to the shaft that rotates the ball. The inside diameter of the ball typically matches the pipeline inside diameter, enabling the pipeline to be cleaned or inspected with a pig.They can be built to accommodate the high pressures required for the typical slurry pipeline. These pressures can require up to ASME Class 2500 valves and flanges. The valves can get qlarge, up to NPS 36 inches.Specialized segmented ball valves and slurry knife gate valves are also used in some slurry applications when pressures are lower, in the ASME Class 150-300 range."

A recent study by the New York Trap Rock Corporation has conclusively determined that the number of blasting complaints is directly related to the noise produced by the blast. In turn it has been known for some years that the noise produced by the blast is directly related to atmospheric structure of temperature, wind, and humidity in the vertical direction. Normally during daylight hours the temperature decreases with altitude at the rate of about five and one half degrees per thousand feet on a sunny day, and to somewhat lesser amounts on cloudy days. Consequently, sound travels slower with altitude because of the lower temperature, and the sound rays tend to bend skyward, and are soon dispersed in the atmosphere. Quite frequently, however, the temperature increases with altitude, and just the opposite effect is attained. That is sound rays are bent downward, and sometimes reach the ground with intensities approaching that at the source. When the temperature increases with altitude a temperature inversion is said to exist. Less frequently than these two atmospheric conditions a condition is observed where temperature remains constant with altitude. This is called an isothermal atmospheric condition, and sound passing through this type of atmosphere tends to travel in straight lines, neither bending upward nor downward. The sound will be greater than normal near the blast, but will dissipate rapidly with distance from the blast site with no zone or zones of silence.

THE phenomenon of air-hardening is well known in connection with special steels. It occurs when the rate of decomposition of austenite to marten- site is so retarded that it takes place on free cooling in air rather than on more rapid cooling in a quenching bath. If an air-hardening steel is quenched sufficiently rapidly it will remain in the soft austenitic state, while if it is cooled very slowly it will again become soft owing to growth of the carbide particles. It depends on a critical adjustment of the decomposition velocity and diffusion rate, and such alloys are rather rare, especially in the non-ferrous field. In carrying out some experiments on some copper- rich copper-cobalt alloys, the author found that these possess very marked air-hardening properties. The alloys are covered by a patent issued to M. G. Corson (1,723,022-1919), which states that an alloy containing between 2 and 5 per cent cobalt is hardened by simple quenching from above 850° C.

On January I, 1988, Chino Mines Company initiated the use of a system of economic splits for all materials encountered in mining. All mined material is evaluated as mill ore, solvent extraction-electrowinning plant feed and non-ore material to determine its disposition. Post-implementation studies indicate that a significant increase in financial returns on material mined was realized when compared with the copper cut-off grade previously in use.

This presentation is about a small company, Industrial Mineral Products, that was formed in 1972 with one product and one customer and by a series of value-added changes avoided disaster and increased sales many times over. The principal of the company stopped by my office in Seattle looking for industrial mineral opportunities in the Northwest. We got together and went through all the minerals in Ladoo's "Industrial Minerals" from Abrasives to Zircon to see if we could find something available on the vast holdings of the Burlington Northern. At that time one of our lessees was operating a silica sand mine near Ravensdale, Washington and indicated that he might be interested in selling out. This sounded interesting to my client and within two weeks the transaction was completed.
