The comminution technology based on High-Pressure Grinding Rolls presses (HPGR) application is currently one of the most efficient methods of hard ore comminution from the scope of the energy consumption and the development of industrial HPGR applications in ore preparation circuits is presently the world trend. However, even though the technology is already in use in many countries, which are the leaders in application of modern mining technology, there is still lack of base investigations over the HPGR performance. Throughput and energetic models of HPGR performance are quite well developed, but technological models predicting the comminution effects still needs an in-depth research. In the paper authors present the method of modeling of HPGR products? particle size distribution with using of suitable mathematical models. A basis of the HPGR performance assessment and HPGR-based crushing circuits design is a product?s particle size distribution. In order to precisely determine the particle size distribution of a HPGR product, parameters of product?s particle size distributions should be conditional on the main technical parameters of the roller press like operating pressure and the speed of rolls. The most accurate approximation of a distribution of size particle d appeared the Weibull?s truncated distribution and it is possible to obtain significant relationships between the approximation formula and the value of operating pressure, or feed characteristics. It makes possible a determination of mass recoveries of the product?s respective size fractions and the productivity planning. Instead of pressure (P), the other HPGR operating parameters can be applied, but the P value appears to produce the most relevant relationship. "Multiphysics models are essentially first principles models capable of providing very accurate micro scale predictions. The computational requirements for Multiphysics Models are extensive, precluding their direct use for flowsheet simulations. Population balance models get their form from theory but the model parameters have to be provided from experiments. The prediction errors for the population balance models are typically significantly higher than those for the Multiphysics Models but the computational effort for Population Balance Models is typically much less than that for the Multiphysics models. The hybrid model described here takes advantage of the strengths of each of the two primary model types and minimizing the weaknesses of each. The Multiphysics Model is used to perform high accuracy "experiments" that are difficult or impossible to conduct in laboratories or plants. The results of these experiments are combined with standard laboratory or plant data to parameterize and further enhance the Population Balance portion of the hybrid model. The creation of a useful Hybrid Model is demonstrated for a MP1000 secondary crusher. The validation of the hybrid crusher model is also presented. Finally the use of the Hybrid Model is illustrated in a full comminution flowsheet simulator."

"AbstractOver the past five years, tax rates in the Canadian mining industry have skyrocketed upward across Canada, as both federal and provincial governments have sought to increase their share of mining revenues.However, the past few years have not only brought high tax rates to the industry, but also a number of important new federal and provincial tax incentives.In large part, these incentives ~ special credits or reduction in tax for carrying out specific exploration, processing or other activities - have helped to moderate the adverse effects of the higher tax rates and have provided inducements for exploration and processing activities which might not otherwise have been undertaken.However, the effectiveness of certain of these incentives can be questioned: our over-all tax structure now consists in large part of punitively high marginal rates with some extraordinarily generous but capricious tax reductions for specific activities and may not be in the best long-term interest of either the industry or the nation.A rational tax structure, with moderate and stable tax rates, together with reasonable incentives confined to activities specifically requiring them, could be a more effective spur to investment than the present tax and incentive jungleIntroductionIN THE YEARS since federal tax reform, the mining industry in Canada has faced a continued escalation in its tax burdens as federal and provincial governments have leapfrogged each other in imposing new and higher taxes on the industry. "The design of the below grade structure of Brigham Building for the Future (BBF) included three different areas to provide power generation and medical facilities as well as a parking garage. The three areas are divided and bounded by 3 foot thick slurry walls. Because each area has different depths and functions, the excavation and construction of the below grade structure presented considerable design challenges. The intricate sequence of excavation and construction between the areas was numerically simulated using a finite element analysis to assess the behavior of the slurry wall and the retained soil. The slurry wall and the related bracing system were modeled as a linear elastic beam and truss element respectively while the soil behavior was simulated using a hardening soil model. The interaction between slurry wall and soil was facilitated by the implementation of an interface element in the numerical model. The design of bracing system to adequately support the slurry walls during the excavation was done based on the envelope of the numerical responses in stage analysis. Predicted lateral displacements of slurry walls were later compared with the field measuring data. The comparison indicated a close agreement.INTRODUCTIONBrigham Building for the Future (BBF) is located in the Brigham and Women’s Longwood medical campus of Boston. The building will serve, once completed, as a biomedical research center and clinical facility to carry out a commitment by Brigham and Women’s Hospital to be the most technologically advanced facility in the country.The 11 story building will also feature a roof garden. The below grade portion of the building has a footprint of 265 feet wide and 210 feet long and is divided into three areas, a 6 stories garage, a cogeneration plant, and an imaging center. BBF was designed and constructed to achieve LEED Gold certification and will have high efficiency and improved sustainability as a medical facility. Ground breaking was in May, 2013. Below grade construction was completed in April, 2014 and the entire building will be finished in late 2016.As shown in Figure 1, the garage area has the largest foot print, 265 feet wide and 125 feet long. The lowest floor of the garage is located about 70 feet below grade. The co-generation plant is about 190 feet wide and 85 long and 50 feet deep. The imagining center is the smallest among three areas. It is 75 feet wide and 85 feet long and 22 feet deep. The areas are separated and bounded by 3 feet thick slurry walls.The perimeter and inner slurry walls were designed to support column loads from the above grade structures, lateral soil pressures and earthquake loads as per the building’s permanent condition and requirement. However the contractor was required to design the temporary bracing and the reinforcement for the slurry walls to resist construction stage loadings."

Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in open cut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints (spoil heaps, rivers etc.). Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only. Highwall Mining originated in the 1940 in the Appalachian Coal Field. This paper describes the history of the various machines that have been designed for highwall mining. During the 1990 and later, there has been more emphasis on the safety in highwall mining. Many pillar strength formulae have been derived to determine the required width of pillars in highwall mining and, with that, the economic feasibility of highwall mining. The various pillar strength criteria will be discussed in this paper showing the countries where they are applied. In order to make highwall mining equipment safer and more productive, there have been quite some technological improvements applied to the machines. These technologies make highwall mining ready for the future as a serious mining method, also outside its traditional Appalachian mining area.

In the design of explosively driven penetration devices, understanding the impact conditions between the explosively propelled penetrator and the target is one of the most important steps in optimizing the performance of the device. These impact conditions are especially prevalent when a shaped charge jet impacts concrete, which is not an ideal target material. The specific impact conditions, including but not limited to the impact angle and jet properties, create a great deal of variability that affects the performance and penetration of the shaped charge. The large amount of impurities and voids in concrete, along with its heterogeneous nature and the general strength characteristics, make concrete a non-ideal material for shaped charge jet penetration. These material characteristics lead to a highly non-linear deformation behavior of the concrete target during a hyper-velocity impact.

Empresa Nacional de Minería (ENAMI) is dedicated to the promotion of small and mid scale Chilean mining industry. Paipote, ENAMI Copper Smelter, processes a variety of mineral products as the result of this promotion. The mineral products characterize a wide variation of copper, iron, sulfur and precious metals content as well as the significant dispersion in the content of impurities, such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth. The Smelter Modernization Program, initiated in1997, introduced a series of technological and operational changes. The development of operational planning and control strategies was necessary to optimize the blending of a wide variety of concentrates and the control of metallurgical processes in order to ensure the stable operation, fulfillment of environmental regulations and the quality of produced copper anodes. A permanent optimization process carried out in the last decade led to the permanent increase of the smelting capacity and the production of anodes and sulfuric acid. Additionally, introduced improvements affected the smelter efficiency and metallurgical recovery, demonstrating the possibilities of the optimization of a small smelting facility reflected in good metallurgical and economic results. This paper presents the smelter evolution, introduced technological and process control changes as well as incorporated new reactors and equipment as a continuous process of optimization.

The purpose of the experiment was to determine detonation characteristics of various improvised explosives. The test consisted of detonating a pipe filled with an explosive compound inside of a plywood arena. The pipe will be located in the center of the arena to ensure even distribution on the witness panels. Details on pipe dimensions, weights of the pipe and explosive, and the density were recorded prior to testing for use in the model calculations. The same size pipes were used throughout to minimize the variables inherent in testing. The plywood witness panels will capture the fragments so that penetration data was obtained, primarily the surface area of impact and depth of penetration. Through the use of the penetration data in conjunction with a mathematical model the original fragment velocity was determined. The mathematical model was developed to measure lethality of fragments from explosives and was modified to determine the original fragment velocity instead. From this model other variables such as the Gurney velocity were calculated. This test was done with an explosive compound that was commonly found, and numerous improvised compounds. In order to guarantee accurate data all of the explosives used for testing were cap sensitive, to eliminate the need for a booster charge which would introduce many unknown variables. The one common explosive compound that was used was C-4 which has known data in order to show accuracy of the model and calculations. The other 5 compounds chosen will not have this data as they will primarily be improvised mixtures.

One of the most significant behaviour of a crushing plant is the constant variation in the process. The variation is caused by two major effects. The first and constantly changing is the rock material properties. During operation rock material with different strength and particle size distribution is fed to the plant which makes the performance of the equipment to vary. The second and more slowly changing variation is caused by wear on the processing equipment. These effects must be predicted in order to be able to optimise a crushing plant. This paper demonstrates how Monte Carlo simulation can be utilised to study and operate crush-ing plants. By introducing Monte Carlo simulation the varying process can be study and also optimised. To maintain the optimised process performance supervision is needed. This paper demonstrates how results from the Monte Carlo simulation can be utilised for process supervision. Charts for process measurements can for example be derived. These can then be used to guide decision making and understand how the variation and performance of the plant changes over time.

On Aug. 5, the main shaft of the San José copper and gold mine near Copiapó in Chile?s Atacama Region collapsed, leaving 33 miners trapped more than 624 m (2,000 ft) beneath the earth?s surface.

"In May 2015 the New Monte Bianco aerial cableway, operating on the Italian side, have been completed. It connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 metres above sea level (m a.s.l.)) with the intermediate station at Pavillon de Mont Frety (2160 m a.s.l.) and with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3460 m a.s.l.). A new underground link between Helbronner Peak and New Torino Refuge has also been built. The link is divided into two different sections: the first one, a 70 meters deep vertical pit created using the “Raise Boring”, descends underground from Helbronner Peak station; the second section, a 160 meters long sub horizontal tunnel, emerges at Torino Refuge. After a first introduction focused on the general layout of the project, the paper will present the geomechanical survey aimed to evaluate the effect of permafrost on the stability of intensely fractured granitic mass. Finally, it will describe the relevant issues related to the highest construction yard in Europe (3400 m a.s.l.): difficult conditions such as extremely cold and windy weather and restricted spaces. INTRODUCTION The new cable way connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 m a.s.l.), close to Courmayeur, with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3462 m a.s.l.) and its territory, as well as links with France and, through the French territory, with the town of Chamonix (1000 m a.s.l.). The overall layout is divided into two sections (as shown in Figure 1): the first section, “Pontal d’Entreves – Mont Frety”, has a length of 1700m, elevation differential of 886m, a capacity of 800 persons/hour and cable cars for 80 passengers; the second one, “Mont Frety – Punta Helbronner”, has a length of 2630m, elevation differential of 1276m, a capacity of 600 persons/hour, and cable cars for 75 passengers. The new system is designed for fully rotating cable cars moving at a constant rate of 9.0 m/s. The track requires constructing special cables supports, three for the first section and two for the second one."

"In September, 1968, a survey of operating mines in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories was undertaken to determine the role of Indigenes (Indian, Metis, Eskimo) on the mines, and the attitude of mine management to these employees. The operating mines in the Territories had (at that date) a total employment of 2,002 men, of which 91 (4.5 per cent) were Indigenes. Indigenes make up 45 per cent of the Territorial population (18 per cent in the Yukon and 63 percent in the Northwest Territories). The paper documents some of the problems associated with indigenous employment in mines. A study was undertaken to determine the role of Indigenes (Indians, Metis, Eskimos) in operating mines in the Yukon and in the North-west Territories. In addition to the mines north of the 60th parallel, the experience of several other Canadian mines was examined. The general picture obtained is considered to be representative of the Canadian mining industry."

Managing water is a key aspect of mining, whether a site is in water surplus or water deficit. Water in tailings storage facilities (TSFs) needs to be managed carefully to maximise the density of the solids, maximise the re-use of available water and to minimise the risk of water overtopping the spillway in the event of heavy rainfall. Developing a water balance models is a standard method for monitoring the major flows of water around a site. However, models created by specialist consultants are often overly complex and are not suited to being used by process plant personnel after they have been handed over to the mine operator. Models typically offer information on water management at the time that they are created, but then ‘sit on the shelf’ and offer no further insight or value for operating mines. Advisian has developed a customised water balance model for a mine in Sub-Saharan Africa, which can be adapted to other locations, to assist in managing water at the site and in particular to predict the current and future water level and volume in the TSF under various rainfall scenarios. The model was developed using Microsoft Excel and requires no specialist skills to operate. Site personnel enter in daily production, water transfer and rainfall data and then view the output dashboards to observe the current water level and volume, decant rates, licensed water abstraction and water supply versus demand. The output dashboards were developed in close consultation with the client to ensure that all of the relevant key performance indicators were included, from the perspectives of all the key stakeholders. This modelling approach focusses on the needs of the people who will actually use the model to actively manage TSFs with the need to involve the model developer as part of ongoing operations eliminated. Many of us are familiar with the history of oil in the Province of Ontario, but for the benefit of those who have never heard the story I will repeat it. In 185 7 J. H. Williams, of Hamilton, an old-country Scotchman, who had the advantage of experience gained from the primitive methods used for refining the oil collected at seepages in Roumania, heard of the "gum beds" along Black creek in Enniskillen township, Lambton county. He erected a small plant in the bush and refined illuminating oil, where the village of Old Springs now stands. The labor of collecting this thick ?gummy substance from the sluggish water of the creek, prompted him to dig a well, the next year ( 1858), in the hope of obtaining a greater quantity. When his excavation reached a gravel bed on top of the rock, oil, resembling "lubricating oil of commerce", rose several feet. Several of these wells were dug and his refining business flourished. The following year the Drake well, in Pennsylvania, was drilled into rock, resulting in an oil find which encouraged one James Shaw to make a similar attempt on Black creek. With a spring-pole drill he completed his well in the spring of 1861 to a depth of 160 feet, and at that depth struck a gusher that flowed uncontrolled for several days. Great excitement followed and the village of Oil Springs had a mushroom growth. The Petrolia field was discovered in 1865. Lick followed up the Thames with a spring-pole rig testing the formations along that river and discovered the original Bothwell field in 1865. During the sixties wells were drilled in many counties in southwestern Ontario.

For around ten years, electronic detonators are available for those who want to use advanced methods and to apply theories promoted by engineers and professors to reduce blast concerns or improve fragmentation and dilution. Furthermore, decision makers can verify the use of electronic detonators to drive down mining costs. Engineers and more specifically blasters are the actual users and have to be convinced of the easiness of electronic detonators. This paper deals with electronic detonators and the notion of easiness. Common feelings about the notion of easiness are discussed. Then, examples of new technologies like, automobile, photography or Information Technology are discussed to observe how they progressed throughout time with new features and sales volume. For the specific explosive initiation industry, each step of the life of an electronic detonator is dealt with concerning the easiness and a table is used to quantify this notion.
