Many mining engineering graduates enter the mining industry lacking training in mine emergency management. As a result, mining universities in the United Sates and other countries are beginning to form volunteer student mine rescue teams to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and give them hands-on experience managing potential emergency scenarios underground. In the early 1980s, the Missouri University of Science and Technology developed the first collegiate mine rescue team in the United States. For approximately 30 years, it was the only successful collegiate team until the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) started its program in 2009. Currently, there are at least five collegiate teams in the United States and one in Canada. At the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology in Germany, the goal is to adapt the Colorado School of Mines Mine Rescue Program to develop a collegiate team of its own. Currently, mining engineering students cover the theoretical basics of mine rescue in an occupational health and safety lecture and take a basic, one-day mine rescue training course at the Central Mine Rescue Station in Leipzig. The course covers the basic mine rescue topics and gives students the opportunity to experience working in elevated heat and smoke conditions while wearing breathing apparatus. This training gives students a small insight into the importance of mine rescue and mine emergency management. Collegiate mine rescue teaches students the importance of mine rescue and mine safety by giving them hands-on learning experiences before entering the mining industry.

I. Introduction. This cavern was discovered Oct. 32,1904, by Mr. Charles 8. Deutschman, in company with whom I made, May 29 to June 3,1905, at the request of Mr. Howard Douglas, Superintendent of the Canadian National Parks, the first exploration of it for the Canadian government. The results were stated in a paper, orally presented, with lantern-views from my photographs, at the British Columbia Meeting of the Institute, Victoria, B. C., July 5, 1905.* The present paper embodies also the results of a second examination, made Oct. 25 to 29, 1905. The accompanging map, Fig. 1, will serve as a guide to the following description. 11. Location. The cavern is situated at snow-line, at the head-waters of Cougar creek, on the west slopes of the Selkirks, about 2 miles north from Ross Peak water-tank, and 5.5 miles west from Glacier station, on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was then reached by an arduous climb from the water-tank, up the ravine of Cougar creek, for 8,000 ft. (2,000 ft. of altitude) over rock- and snow-slides, and through a thick tangle of alders. But an easy and very picturesque trail has, during the past summer, been opened by the government from Glacier station, which is also a hotel of the railway company. Figs. 3, 3 and 4 represent views, not heretofore published, of the grand scenery of this region, so rapidly becoming the object of attraction to thousands of tourists from all parts of the world. The safe and economical storage of tailings generated by modern day mining operations is possibly the single largest challenge faced by miners today. By nature, tailings are a waste product that have little to no economic value. Yet, their physical and chemical contents can pose incredible environmental hazards if not stored correctly. The variety of factors that are met when designing Tailing Storage Facilities (TSFs), means that in most cases, a low-cost solution is sought to accomplish storage, meet environmental regulations, and adhere to industry best practices. TSFs can be large dam face structures or smaller structures like retention/evaporation lined ponds. Water management is potentially the single largest factor that miners and designers must contend with when constructing a TSF. Water is a necessary component in the process of extracting ore but can be difficult and expensive to remove once it is mixed with solid tailings particles. As a result, the most common disposal of these water containing tailings, called a slurry, is to simply discharge into an embanked TSF (Vick, 1990). These structures, just like any other water retaining dam, can breach releasing contents downstream. Despite modern advancements in TSF design, there have been numerous dam failures that have resulted in tragic loss of life and ecological devastation. Most notably in the last decade, the Brumadinho and Mariana Dam disasters in Brazil killed 278 people in downstream communities when TSF dams failed in 2019 and 2015, respectively (Rotta at el., 2020). Similarly, in 2014, the Mount Polley tailings spill in British Columbia was the second largest tailings spill on record and caused extensive damage to adjacent watershed ecosystems when the TSF embankment was breached (Byrne at el., 2018). While there were indeed numerous unique and underlying factors present in each of these structural failures, a shared element in the devastation was the large-scale release of unstable liquefied tailings

The Bond ball mill grindability test is one of the most common metrics used in the mining industry for ore hardness measurements. The test is an important part of the Bond work index methodology for designing and measuring the efficiency of mineral grinding circuits. In spite of being called “Bond’s Law,” the work index equations are not a law of nature; but rather an empirically measured regression of a large data set collected by the Allis- Chalmers corporation in the period between 1930 and 1952. As a regression, it is valid within a specific “calibration space,” and great care is required when deviating the test procedures or observing results that are outside of that calibration space. This paper is a collected summary of other works by the Authors that describe feed sizes, product sizes, quality control checks, and other information about interpreting the test and using its results. Examples of adjustments that are sometimes required when using the test are: changing the test product (P80), and coping with a feed that is too fine to apply the “proper” feed preparation steps (such as is sometimes observed from HPGR or SAGDesign product testing). Related metrics, like the Morrell Mib value and Levin B value will be discussed, along with recommendations for their use on design projects. The intended audience is any user of laboratory work index test data.

The XCVIIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at Spokane, Wash., beginning Monday, Sept. 27, 1909, as already announced in Special Circulars of May 8 and Aug. 14, 1909, and in the Bulletins for June, July, and August. The meeting will be preceded by a tour through Yellow stone Park and visits to Butte and Anaconda, and will be followed by visits to the Coeur d'Alene district, to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition at Seattle, to the mining- and smelting-plants near Salt Lake, and to the iron- and lead- and zinc-plants at Pueblo. The special train for the party' will leave Chicago, September 16, and return about October 12. Details of the itinerary are given later in this announcement. The Secretary of the Spokane Local Committee is Lyndon K. Armstrong, 615 Hyde Block, Spokane, Wash., to whom should be addressed all inquiries concerning local matters. The control of the papers and proceedings will remain in charge of the Institute office, as usual. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the many courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the excursion party be made larger. Exceptional facilities to visit the many mines and smelters have been freely provided; and members are requested to make all reasonable effort to attend the meeting at Spokane and participate in the excursions. During the past year and a half the Western United Corporation of Aurora , Illinois , has been distributing carburetted water ges from its Lockport , Ill . , plant , to an extensive territory , under an initial pressure ranging up to 90 lb.. per sq. in . The most distant distributing point on the system is at Harvard , Ill . , about 35 miles from the plant.. The territory supplied is approximately 85 miles long and 35 miles wide , the total mileage of rains being 1223 , or approximately 24 per cent of all the gas trains in Illinois outside the city of Chicago .

HPGR equipment has been well proven to be energy-efficient in the first stage of grinding in iron ore beneficiation plants. Numerous advantages of utilising HPGR grinding prior to ball mill grinding, such as reducing the power consumption in a ball mill through generation of micro-cracks, has been thoroughly studied. Less attention has been paid to efficiency of the HPGR circuit rather than the downstream ball mill circuit. In this study the HPGR circuit has been optimised through feed size reduction by crushing, and feed iron content upgrading by dry cobbing. This optimisation leads to better operation of the HPGR, and a smaller product size which is expected to result in a lower wear rate of ball mill liners and balls. It is also expected that the top size of the ball mill balls be reduced. Additionally, by reducing the feed size of HPGR from 30 mm to 15 mm, it is possible to achieve similar K80 of HPGR product in lowered pressure, i.e. 2.5 N.mm-2 instead of 3.5 N.mm-2 which translates to ease of operation. Similarly in a given roll pressure, smaller feed sizes result in higher specific throughput of ~10% which means higher production capacities. The results also reveal that this optimisation increases the concentrate weight recovery by about 10%. It also results in slight increases in the Fe grade of the product iron concentrate. The Bureau of Mines has conducted substantial research on the design, construction, and operation of metal and nonmetal tailings ponds. This design guide, like related Bureau publications that preceded it, is produced to assist the industry in the management of mill tailings disposal. It covers the site selection, sampling, laboratory testing, design, construction, operation, and inspection of tailings embankments. The effects of environment, topography, and hydrogeology are also included, and various methods of stability analysis and factors affecting stability are reviewed. Because of the diversity of problems encountered in tailings embankments, specific solutions are not intended. The guide is, however, a useful checklist for designers, operators, and inspectors of this type of structure.

When mechanical ventilation is to supersede the natural ventilation of a mine it is desirable to determine what resistance the mine as a whole offers to the flow of air in order to specify properly the limiting duties of a ventilating fan. The relation of pressure to volume of flow for the mine as a whole may be calculated from experimental data, or it may be determined directly by measurements of volume of flow and the natural draft pressures causing flow; but in both methods the determinations are affected by many variables. With the intention of making a practical application of both methods, a small metal mine in process of development at Butte, Mont., was selected by the writers as the object of experiments planned to compare the mine resistances determined by measurements of natural draft and volume of flow with those calculated from experimental data. Four sets of teats were made with natural draft in October, 1925, December, 1925, April, .1926, and September to December, 1926; the last set consisted of a series of weekly observations. DESCRIPTION OF MINE The mine selected for the experiments was a typical vertical shaft metal mine in the development stage. No stoping had been done, and ventilation was confined to shafts, crosscuts, drifts, and raises. Figure 1 is a dia¬grammatic sketch of the main openings. All were timbered with full sets on approximately 5-foot centers. The shaft compartments were 4 by 4.5 feet, and one in each shaft was partly blocked by staggered manway landings. A pump column in the upcast shaft was discharging about 280 gallons a minute of water at 70° F. from the 1,000-foot level. The drifts were slightly sinuous, but the crosscuts were exceptionally straight and uniform in area; both drifts and crosscuts were about 5 by 7 feet in cross section. Introductory The following pages present the results of field investigations, laboratory and commercial tests, drilling, surveying, and preliminary development of the refractory clays which have been discovered recently in the township of Kipling, at the foot of Long rapids on the west side of the Mattagami river about 57 miles north of Kapuskasing and approximately 7 miles north of Smoky Falls, the terminus of the privately owned railway operated by the Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company, Kapuskasing (see Figure 1). Investigations on the clays of northern Ontario have been carried on over a period of seven years by officers of the Ontario Department of Mines, and I am indebted to the information published by that Department in reports by W. S. Dyer and A. R. Crozier, as well as?by Professor R. J. Montgomery, of the Ceramic Department, University of Toronto. It was, in large measure, the data given in the 37th, 38th, and 42nd Annual Reports of the Ontario Department of Mines that led me to make a personal investigation of the Mattagami River clays, with the result that we now have a commercial undertaking that will develop eventually into an industry of considerable importance in supplying the central manufacturing districts of Canada with refractories that heretofore have been largely imported from the United States. An extract from the 42nd Annual Report of the Department, Part III, 1933, page 75, reads as follows: "As for the refractory clay, the deposits are undoubtedly very large, but what is urgently needed is a deposit near the railway under sufficiently shallow overburden for recovery by stripping'. Having previously made an investigation of the clays adjacent to the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway, and these clays proving unsuitable, I turned my attention to the outcrops of refractory clays on the Mattagami river, first reported by Keele in 1919. This area offered possibilities within the economically permissible distance from rail transportation.

"There is a very small fraction of wireless experts in the world with experience in underground installations and an even smaller fraction that have experience specific to building mine shafts. This is why in 2009, Redpath created its own system to meet the demands specific to shaft construction. Today, after a dozen shaft installations and several design iterations, Redpath has the expertise and experience required to implement a proper wireless system in any shaft configuration.This document will explain multiple proven wireless communication designs optimized for shaft construction and suitable for permanent use. This includes line of sight installations up to 1200m, short range mesh networks, and the latest patent pending Integrated Leaky Feeder Mesh Network. Additionally, this document will explore the lessons that Redpath learned in its effort to interconnect the people and tools needed to build a mine shaft.INTRODUCTIONAfter a decade of research, several design iterations and a dozen application examples, Redpath has resolved two wireless network architectures to best serve mine shaft construction projects.The long range line-of-sight (LOS) wireless network is the most cost effective and easiest to install, but requires an unobstructed line of sight between the working area and the shaft collar. As such, long range LOS is best suited for ventilation shafts or during the first phase of shaft sinking, before the shaft is equipped.Alternatively, a mesh network uses radios installed at pre-determined intervals in the shaft and on each conveyance. A wireless mesh uses antennas to bridge intervals between shaft radios, whereas Redpath’s integrated leaky feeder mesh network (patent pending) bridges these intervals with radiating cable, commonly referred to as a “leaky feeder” cable. Both of these mesh configurations can provide continuous reception for hoist conveyances travelling in shafts without line-of-sight, making them ideal for shaft equipping and even permanent installations in both mine shafts and lateral drifts.BACKGROUNDHoist operators receive operating commands using what are commonly referred to as “bell signals.” These instructions are delivered in a series of coded pulses on a spring returned pull cord or push button that is typically hardwired back to the hoist operator’s control room from one of many locations in the mine shaft. During the construction phase of a traditional mine shaft, a worker riding inside the sinking bucket would have to reach out to a pull cord installed on the shaft wall to send a stop command to the hoist operator. Today, Redpath’s modern shaft sinking projects use fully enclosed personnel carriers to protect the workers riding inside, specifically preventing workers from reaching out into the shaft while the hoist is in motion. The enforcement of this safety feature on all shaft projects in 2008 forced the engineering group at Redpath to find a suitable wireless solution for hoist communication to facilitate shaft construction.THE IDEAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR MINE SHAFT CONSTRUCTIONIdeally, the shaft communication system should not transform the tools to which the miners have grown accustomed. It should support the push-to-talk functionality of traditional VHF handsets and the standard belling system that has been used for decades. Additionally, it should be able to support a vendor independent framework upon which new devices and features can be added. This study reports that routine mining activities could produce a high number of nanometer sized particles which have not been well characterized and may represent an unacknowledged exposure present in the mining environment. A preliminary survey of the particle emission from the feed-leg drilling activity was conducted in the excavations of an experimental mine. The level of particulate exposure was monitored by real time direct reading instruments include a NanoScan scanning mobility particle sizer (measurement range 10-420 nm) and an optical particle sizer (measurement range 0.3-10 μm). Particulate morphological and structural examination was conducted through transmission and scanning electron microscopy and x-ray dispersive analysis of samples collected by a thermophoretic sampler, and a novel nanoparticle sampler. The real time instrument data revealed high concentrations (> 3.5 x 106 particles/cm3) of ultrafine/nanoparticles generated from the drilling activity. Analysis of particle sampler specimens with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed a large amount of submicron silica, spherical primary particles and agglomerated soot particles rich in carbon. Exposure to particles in the nanometer size from various sources within the mining environment may be associated with the poorly understood rise in respiratory and systemic disease among miners. INTRODUCTION Exposures to mine dust have been measured and evaluated for decades. Exposures to aerosolized dust such as coal or silica particles can cause lung and other diseases (1-7). One way that The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) characterizes inhalation exposures within the mining environment is through measuring the respirable dust mass concentration within the breathing zone of workers (8). Respirable particulate matter (RPM) is of great concern due to its ability to deposit in the alveolar region of the lungs (9-10) where it can affect respiratory function. Interventions championed by MSHA have greatly reduced the prevalence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Although great progress has been made, the prevalence of CWP and PMF appears to be trending upwards and the measured increase in prevalence is not elucidated in RPM measurements (11-12). Though the presence and risk associated with ultrafine particles such as emission from diesel engine within the mining environment has been previously established (13-14). There is suspicion within the mining industry that this resurgence of lung disease may be due to very fine particulate matter from various source that is not properly characterized by current sampling methods. Nanometer sized particles, in the range of ultrafine particles, fall within the RPM size range and have been found to deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract (15). Nanoparticles are commonly accepted as particles that are greater than 1 nm in two or three dimensions but smaller than 100 nm (16). Once in the lungs, nanoparticles can enter the blood stream (17) and selectively affect other target organs such as the heart, liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and brain (15,18-19). The size of nanoparticles has been shown to correlate with their translocation behavior on secondary target organs (20-21). There is strong evidence that the clearance mechanisms used to rid the lungs of particulate matter are not as effective on nanometer sized particles, leading to a greater fraction of never-cleared particles which may enhance disease development (20). Research has demonstrated that nanometer sized particles have unique properties (22) whose adverse health impact is greater than what has been found with micrometer sized particles of the same type (23-26). The large ratio of surface area to mass compared to larger particles is believed to make nanoparticles a greater hazard. It would be most difficult to place a date on the beginning of the revolution in analytical techniques that we have witnessed in recent years; but there is no question that the period since the end of World War II has seen a major change in thinking with respect to control and accounting analyses. For reasons relating to competition, much of this change was brought about in the chemical industries and only more recently has begun to affect directly the mineral industries. In considering the subject outlined in the title of this paper, one might well be tempted to discuss solely the more exotic methods of control and automation which have come into being in the past short while. In this paper, however, an attempt will be made to take a broader view and consider not only the application of newer purely physical methods of control but also those phases of chemical plus physical analyses that have bearing on our industry.
