The Dominion Observatory was founded in 1905 and, from the beginning, it work included research in both astronomical and geophysical science. During its first years, up to 1916, the Observatory also included geodetic surveying as part of it scientific program. Although, at the beginning of the century, geophysics did not have the close connection with mineral exploration that it now holds , the founders of the Observatory were men of vision, and they laid a solid foundation for the application of the techniques of geomagnetism, gravity and seismology to an understanding of the Canadian terrain of plain , mountains, seacoasts and shield area . The particular sphere which the Observatory occupies in the field of geophysics has been evolving over a period of many years and it has now a rather definite relation to the work of other government bodies, university science departments and industrial organizations. We have, for example, an over-all responsibility for the regional magnetic mapping of Canada and, as the magnetic field is subject to slow but steady changes, we produce new magnetic maps of the country every five years. These maps indicate the strength and direction of the magnetic field, the variation of the compass and the rate of change of the magnetic elements.

The East Kootenay coal-field, situated close to the boundary between the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, is composed of four small areas locally called the Crow's Nest Pass, the Upper Elk, the Flathead and Crown Mountain, and comprises an area of about 3 78 square miles. From eleven to twenty-five seams have been exposed of two feet and over in thickness, with a total thickness of about 200 feet of coal, and reckoning about one hundred feet to be workable, gives an estimate of coal available of about thirty-seven billion tons. The coal is a high-grade bituminous, occasionally tending towards anthracite, and the majority of the seams furnish a. very good quality of coking coal as well as an excellent steam coal. The coal-field is found in the mountain ranges in long narrow strips. The age of the fonnation and the thickness of the covering beds have had considerable influence on the character of the coal, and lateral pressure and disturbances in the process of mountain-building have wrought great changes. With such an abundance of coal, it has been a disappointment that the East Kootenay field has not figured larger industrially. So far only one portion of the coal-field has been utilized. This is the Crow's Nest, where, in 1898, the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company commenced development. Access to the coal seams was easily obtained, the mountain creeks having eroded away the covering, and mines were driven into the coal seams. In that year about ten thousand tons of coal were produced from the mine at Coal Creek.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines-sponsored project on the utilization of "stiff" backfill to minimize potential rock burst hazards, a finite element study was undertaken to predict stresses and displacements around a stope mined up from the 5400 level of the Sunshine mine, Kellogg, Idaho. This stope was to be backfilled using a high-modulus fill. In preparation for that configuration, certain instrumentation was installed near the 5400 level to monitor stress changes. Due to untenable economics, only 2 cuts of the stope were ever made. This paper presents the results of the instrument readings taken during the first cut and compares them with the numerical predictions, as well as presents the modeling results of closure and fill stresses in the stope if it had been mined.

MANY excellent descriptions of the mills of the, Porcupine district have been written, but no discussion exclusively devoted to the metallurgical technology has been given. These notes are intended to cover this feature briefly. They are based upon 2 ½ years' mill operation in the district-i.e., practically since the beginning of metallurgical operations. Character of the Porcupine Ore.-There is no oxidized ore in the district, the surface having been deeply planed by glacial action in recent geologic time. The precious-metal content is about in the proportion of 85 of gold to 15? of silver by weight; hence, the silver is practically negligible. There are two classes of Porcupine ore, having very different characteristics; these will be referred to throughout this paper as Class A and Class B. Class A ore is a pure quartz with inclusions of schist. Generally it is heavily fractured .and breaks down readily to sharp, hard grains, about minus 10 plus 20 mesh, requiring further comminution to release the gold. It carries very little pyrite; the gold is entirely free and apt to be coarse, but often spongy, going into solution readily on that account. This gold is 60 per cent. to 85 per cent. free milling, depending on the grade of ore. Class B ore is an iron silicate schist, strongly laminated, carrying 4 to 5 per cent. pyrite; its specific gravity is 2.8 to 3.0, depending upon the amount of mineralization. In breaking the ore in the mine, generally over 25 per cent. of material through a ½ -in. ring is made; the ore readily breaks down in milling and makes a comparatively large amount of non-crystalline slime; owing to its high specific gravity, however, it is quick settling.' In my opinion, the gold in this ore is free, but so finely divided that it will neither pan nor amalgamate; it appears to be disseminated through the rock and not chiefly associated with the pyrite. Veins of Class A ore occur with or without side walls of Class B, and veins of Class B occur unassociated with Class A; more often the veins are closely banded, Class A and Class B alternating, generally with Class B in excess. Both classes of ore are more-or less blocky at times, and with ref¬erence to Class B this is indicative or low gold content.

In 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northwest of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and LUX. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. Through the courtesy of H. D. Brown and W. J. Brundred, officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., all their data on this operation were made available to the writer in connection with an investigation of rejuvenation methods in the State for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. Rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals are increasingly becoming more important in our technological society and are used in many of our electronic devices (such as cell phones, computer monitors, wind turbines, etc.), batteries, and magnets. Measuring REE and critical minerals in ashed coal approximates the REE and critical minerals in the fly or bottom ash remaining after coal is burned at a power plant, where REE and other critical minerals could be leached. In New Mexico, there are 26 coal fields in Late Cretaceous rocks in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals) program. Higher concentrations of REE (as much as 2103 ppm total REE) are found locally in ashed coals from the basins. More chemical and mineralogical analyses are required to fully understand the distribution and origin of REE in these deposits. As the demand for REE increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics, perhaps even from coal.

The potential of hydrogen peroxide explosives was introduced to Thomas Gustavsson and Robert Håkland by Dr Miguel Araos through his development of hydrogen peroxide gel compositions (HPG). In 2020, Thomas and Robert developed a concept project with Boliden Minerals and received Swedish government funding to evaluate HPG technology in a mine environment. The project showed HPG reacted violently with mine mineralization and concluded that HPGs did not offer a commercial solution due to safety concerns. Thomas and Robert engaged with Stefan Nilsson to develop hydrogen peroxide emulsion (HPE) compositions and the process techniques to manufacture them. In 2021, laboratory work produced a promising low carbon intensity, nitrate free, ammonia free, emulsion formulation based on industrial grade hydrogen peroxide and a fuel-emulsifier phase. Design and construction of an HPE pilot plant and underground charging unit commenced. The manufacture of hydrogen peroxide emulsion shares several similarities with the production of nitrate-based emulsions in that the plant is a facility to blend a strong oxidizer solution with a liquid fuel phase into a finished emulsion. A key differentiator between HPE and nitrate-based emulsion is that the manufacture of HPE is a cold production technology in that neither the oxidizer phase (HP) nor the fuel-emulsifier phase requires high temperature heating to prepare raw materials. A successful proof-of-concept HPE evaluation ran from April 2022 to October 2022 at Boliden’s Kankberg underground mine in Sweden. This evaluation demonstrated HPE technology's safety, performance, production, handling, and indicative environmental benefits.

Geochemical data from drill core samples is used in mineral exploration to enable geologists to understand subsurface geology. However, it is challenging to analyse these data sets rigorously and consistently. Manual data interpretation relies on the knowledge and experience of logging geologists. When multiple geologists are involved, it is possible to introduce inconsistencies in logged lithology type and scale of logging (‘splitters’ versus ‘lumpers’). Machine learning (ML) is a powerful tool for analysing high dimensional data (ie data with many variables) and large data sets (ie data with many samples). However, ML methods applied to drill hole samples do not incorporate spatial information and this can result in high misclassification rates and small-scale ‘noisy’ results. We demonstrate the use of multiscale spatial analysis (wavelet tessellation) as a pre-ML step to analyse spatial information. This step helps reduce misclassification and filter out unwanted small-scale variation in the data. In an experiment, we used wavelet tessellation and supervised ML to predict litho-geochemical rock types from geochemistry data. The data set is from the Valhalla uranium deposit near Mount Isa, northern Queensland. First, geochemical knowledge and statistical analysis was used to select appropriate geochemical elements for litho-geochemical classification. Second, the elements were processed using multiscale spatial analysis. Third, we trained a Random Forest model with the data set and found that the model performs worse in predicting rare rock samples than common ones. We applied over-sampling and down-sampling methods in aim to overcome this issue. As a conclusion, the combination of multiscale spatial analysis (to define rock unit boundaries) and Random Forests (to classify rock units) is a good method for rapid and accurate analysis of drill hole geochemistry.

Gold-bearing outcrops were discovered in 1862 by Union soldiers garrisoned at Needles, CA, near the northwest corner of the future State of Arizona. Sporadic mining began several years later, but engineered shaft sinking and mill construction were not adopted at Oatman and the neighboring camp of Goldroad until about 1900. Geological interpretations in 1915 enabled major production during the next decade. In the late-1930s, USSR&M built a new mine and mill in Gold Road and the District flourished until closure by Federal Order L-208 in October 1942. For about a decade, Oatman’s mines were among the largest gold producers in the American West.

HERBERT HOOVER had to sit through an hour and a half of eulogy of himself at Carnegie Hall last night, said the Sun and New York Herald of Feb. 19. When his turn to answer came he remarked that, although one of the speakers had referred to him as a modest man, he would never, in view of this experience, be able to prove it. The occasion was the presentation by the Civic Forum to Mr. Hoover of its medal of honor for distinguished service, the only recipients in past years having been General Goethals, Thomas A. Edison, and Alexander Graham Bell. Only by distortion of intent could there be said to be anything political in the affair, which was carefully described by the chairman, Charles E. Hughes, as non-partisan. Nevertheless, the praise bestowed on the former Food Administrator by the former Republican candidate for President, proved specially interesting to a much applauding audience which filled the hall to the uppermost gallery. A piece of real news was supplied by Horace V. Winchell, whom Mr. Hoover succeeded on Tuesday as President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. He said that Mr. Hoover, when in Europe after the . armistice, caused to be collected the literature of the war in all Europe.

IF one is to place any credence at all in the reports published in the daily press, the subject of conservation has been a very lively topic of conversation during the past 60 days, and it does not appear that the temperature of the summer months has been in any way moderated by the discussion. It is a subject in which we are all vitally interested and to which, so far as our mineral resources are concerned, both the Institute and the Geological Survey have liberally contributed. The report of the National Conservation Commission, appointed by President Roosevelt, contains a series of papers on the conservation of mineral resources, all of which were prepared by members of the Geological Survey and were compiled largely from information previously collected by that Federal bureau in the performance of its regular duties. It is not the purpose of this paper to reiterate in extenso any of the material already published. The contributions of the Survey officials to the Commission's report have been published in a separate document as Bulletin No. 394. This docunient is for free distribution and may be obtained upon application to the Director of the Survey. In the preparation of this paper I desire merely to make a few suggestions regarding the possible necessity of some restraint upon or control of one branch of the mining industry with which I have been somewhat closely associated for the past 20 years-that of coal. A DOCUMENT of progress and of great interest to engineers is the report of the Military Affairs Committee of 'the Engineering Council, which has just been accepted and sent to the secretary of War. It provides .a plan whereby civilian engineers holding commissions in the Reserve Corps may; with their con- sent, be called into service of the army during peace at any time, either with troops in the field or in a consulting capacity on any government engineering work. The Military Affairs Committee finds ample authority in the military bill passed by Congress on June 4, 1920, for this arrangement and also for extending the privilege to military engineer, officer-s of the regular army to engage in civilian work during times of peace. It is hoped that the Secretary of War will adopt the suggestions and put the program outlined into effect. "Grouted helical piles allow significant increase in pile capacity with low additional cost over that of conventional helical piles. They can be particularly advantageous in sites where installation disturbance can reduce or even eliminate the pile shaft resistance. For helical piles with slender shafts, a grout column offers increased buckling resistance under compression loading, and may reduce the potential settlement required to mobilize the bearing component of their plates. This paper investigates the performance of grouted helical piles installed in loose sand. Grouted helical piles were constructed and tested in a controlled laboratory environment. Helical piles with hollow pipe shaft and single helix were grouted during installation. The grout was injected into the soil under high pressure through two nozzles placed above the piles helices. The load test results showed significant improvement in the performance and load carrying capacity of the helical pile due to the formation of a cylindrical grout column along the entire shaft leading to a higher shaft resistance contribution to the total pile capacity. The results suggest that grouted helical piles with slender hollow shaft could be used to support large structural loads. INTRODUCTIONHelical piles are widely used as a deep foundation system for different engineering applications. They represent an attractive foundation option because of their cost effectiveness, ease of installation even in limited access areas, low levels of noise and vibrations, and their ability to be installed through ground water without casing. In addition, they allow immediate loading upon installation. Helical piles are installed into the ground by applying a mechanical torque to the pile head. The installation torque monitoring provides a kind of quality control during the construction of helical piles. It could be used in predicting the ultimate pile capacity using several capacity-torque correlations (Livneh and Elnaggar 2008; and Hoyt and Clemence 1989).However, helical piles installation can cause soil disturbance within the annular zone affected by the pile helices. This disturbance can introduce fissures within the pile cylindrical failure surface (Vesic 1971; Mooney el al. 1985; and Zhang 1999). Thus, the shear strength of the soil decreases along the affected zone. Bagheri and El Naggar (2013) evaluated the installation effects of helical piles in sand. They reported that as the helical blade proceeds into the ground, sand within the cylindrical path circumscribed by the helices experiences torsional and vertical shearing accompanied by sand displacement and stress changes. This process is more pronounced in the case of multi-helices and large diameter anchors. Bagheri and El Naggar (2016) evaluated the installation effects of helical piles in structured clay. They indicated that the behavior of the helical pile and its capacity are significantly affected by the degree of soil de-structuring induced by the penetration of the pile shaft and helices. In addition to the installation disturbance, helical piles have other drawbacks including; high potential settlement required to fully mobilize the bearing component of their plates, low buckling resistance of their slender shafts, and the incomplete rigidity of the coupling joints along the pile shaft that allow some lateral movement under compression loading (Vickars and Clemence 2000)."

This article deals with open pit mine planning and a computer technology known as Direct Block Scheduling, or “DBS”. This is an emerging technology for modeling mine exploitation strategies using mixed-integer linear programming. This technique has proved to yield stronger economic results compared to the Lerchs-Grossmann (“LG”) algorithm currently used at the beginning of the mine planning process. The article briefly describes the shortcomings of current practice; then, this delves into the superior results obtained by DBS technology compared to current practice. Finally, the article argues that results achieve so far by DBS could be enhanced even further. To do this, the framework to apply this emerging technology, which is also used in current practice, should be modified to better exploit the capabilities of DBS technology. To better understand this change, an illustrated case study is presented at the end of the article.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a resistência à fadiga de duas ligas de NiTi diferentes sob condições de teste controladas por deformação a 25°C por meio de testes de fadiga por flexão rotativa. Além disso, as propriedades mecânicas, térmicas e estruturais dos fios foram caracterizadas por ensaios de DSC, DRX, MEV/EDS e tração. Os resultados revelaram que ambos os materiais são superelásticos à temperatura ambiente e, portanto apresentaram composição basicamente austenítica de sua matriz. Os resultados de ensaio de tração são condizentes com a caracterização térmica e estrutural, pois os materiais apresentam recuperação total de forma após ciclos de carga e descarga em tração. Ambos os materiais são ricos em titânio, um deles apresenta camada de óxido superficial enquanto o outro apresenta acabamento superficial. Apesar das propriedades similares a amostra 1 apresentou média de 77 ciclos até a falha, enquanto a amostra 2 resistiu a 1827 ciclos..

The Certificate in Mining Studies program at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada is a collaborative initiative between mining schools and industry to provide accessible, cost-effective, accredited continuing education and training, designed to address the future needs of the global mining community. Content is provided by industry specialists and delivered through an integration of online learning, short courses and interactive webcasts. Accreditation is provided by a network of mining schools. In 2011, the program will deliver close to 100 short courses and interactive webcasts and provide 24/7 access to more than 130 online courses in six mining streams, to participants from as far afield as Tanzania, Argentina and Mongolia. The program is proving adaptable to corporate and mine site engineer-in-training and graduate-development programs, as well as providing accessible professional development opportunities for individuals. It also provides opportunities for cross-training from other disciplines and integration with mining school curricula.

A metodologia utilizada foi a estratificação dos dados históricos, coletados no sistema informatizado de manutenção da empresa (SIM), para identificar, classificar e analisar as causas das trocas prematuras realizadas. A partir disso, baseado em conceitos de engenharia de manutenção, foram utilizados métodos de análises de falhas, como Diagrama de Pareto, Brainstorming, Diagrama de Ishikawa e Matriz Esforço x Impacto para elaboração de propostas de plano de ação modelo 5W1H visando à eliminação dos problemas.

This study introduces a new apparatus designed to improve the load-bearing capacities and insertion efficiency of split set type friction bolts. Laboratory and site studies demonstrated the apparatus’s advantages in terms of practicality and prevention of buckling. The apparatus temporarily compresses the split tubes, reducing friction during insertion and increasing normal stresses and friction capacity at the bolt-rock contacts.

Sections 120 and 121 of Article XI. Fire Control, of a proposed Mine Safety Law in preparation, to be used as desired and when approved by any State, contains these provisions: After the adoption of these regulations, no mine operator shall erect any nonfireproof structure within 50 feet of any mine entrance. or airway. Every operating mine having nonfireproof structures within 50 feet of any mine entrance or airway, except headframes necessary for hoisting, shall have such structures fireproofed or removed and replaced with fireproof structures within six months of the adoption of these regulations. Before reopening, mines idle at the time of the adoption of these regulations shall have all non- fireproof structures fireproofed, removed, or replaced with fire- proof structures as required by the foregoing sentence. Upon receipt of the written statement of a mine operator that the fireproofing of existing structures is impracticable, the chief mining engineer (of the State commission) shall satisfy himself as to the abouracy of the statement. If he concurs that fireproofing is impracticable, and if at the same time he holds the opinion that adequate protection can be provided otherwise by such procedure, he shall have authority to issue a written permit for the substitution of fireproof door at or near portals of mine openings and collars: of shafts. Such doors shall fit as nearly gas-tight as possible. and shall be installed in such a way that the mouths of mine open- ings can be closed readily from outside of structures. The effec- tiveness of such permit may be made contingent upon the operator's continued compliance with any additional precautions which are necessary in the chief mining engineer's opinion to protect the lives of miners.

The first wagon trail across Loveland Pass was built in 1869 thus starting the struggle between the Colorado Rockies and interstate travel. The 1st Pioneer Bore underneath Loveland Pass at the Continental Divide in Colorado was attempted between 1941 and 1943 and was abandoned due to ground conditions at the Loveland Fault. Construction on the nearby Eisenhower Tunnel began in 1967 and was completed in 1973. Numerous challenges associated with tunneling, including at 11,000 ft were overcome. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the history of investigation and construction challenges associated with the Eisenhower Tunnel to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
