A theoretical procedure is demonstrated for calculating two-dimensional binary cellular single-valued interfaces and extended to triple-valued (remelt) shapes. The numerical calculations for the single-valued local equilibrium problem which yield unique shapes as functions of the supersaturation parameter a and the partition coefficient k are reviewed. The cell amplitude L and wavelength A scale identically as the inverse velocity to the 112 power and the aspect ratio r is a constant equal to 312, independently of a and k for a < 0.5.. For 0.5 < a < m, L, A and r decrease asymptotically to zero indicating the finite amplitude nature of the instability at a = 1 and the existence of sub-marginal states which converge to a flat interface at a- m (Glv- m). Scaling comparisons between equilibrium single-valued and triple-valued and deep-rooted non- equilibrium cells are made.

6, 7.3 meter diameter autogenous mills at Wabush Mines are undergoing conversion from a radial configuration of pulp discharger to a curved design. Improved discharging efficiency has effectively lowered the pulp level in the mill. The low level operation enhances the grinding efficiency netting a 12% power reduction. Significant reductions to rate of wear has been a spin off benefit. The design incorporates features for holding the assembly solidly in place thus eliminating bolt hole damage and leakers. Preliminary work in one 11 meter mill at Hibbing Taconite did not indicate that all the same advantages were available in their process.

Laterite projects are found in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. As a result severe meteorological situations accompany such projects, often in regions of high seismic activity and political uncertainty. Frequently, socio-economic development supported by political interest is a major driver for development, while environmental protection imposes numerous stresses on the project. This paper will review and examine the many social, environmental, technical and financial issues that a mining and extraction process is subject to during development. The options that must be evaluated will be discussed in the context of sustainable development. Issues of project standards and cultural impact through to long-term issues such as greenhouse gasses and climate change will be assessed in redirecting project environmental norms. Although a rationale for sustainable project can be developed many long- term uncertainties around issues remain. "The website www.economicevaluation.com.au, which had its origins at the Project Evaluation Conference 2009, provides a free way for industry professionals to teach themselves economic evaluation. At its core is a set of fast-moving modules and three worked examples.The website recognises that economic evaluation is a discipline with a hierarchy of three levels:decision-makingevaluating the project/businesshands-on modelling.There are a set of modules for each level that describe the concepts and activities in detail. These emphasise that the most important and rewarding work is the evaluation of Level 2. The economic model created in Level 3 is merely a working tool and should not become a sophisticated ‘trophy’ in Excel that only one or two people can comfortably use.Hands-on modelling contains three sets of practices designed to make any model rigorous and intuitive so that it can be easily understood and used by others in the project team. Even if the model develops into a long, detailed and complex workbook, it should remain easy to follow and be intuitive. The website advocates freedom to devise any architecture that best suits the project under study, but promotes rigour through the following practices:four cash streams and graphsthree architectures – concept, prefeasibility and feasibilitysix principles.The modules in the Level 2 evaluation use conversational language to describe in detail the broad range of activities needed to properly understand and characterise a project/business. "During the mid to late 1960’s, the underground potash industry in Saskatchewan was born. For the next four decades the industry operated at a steady pace supporting a large part of the world demand; until 2008 when the potash market heightened. Operators were motivated to capitalize on this increased demand, new mines were proposed while existing mines were planning upgrades. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) was one of the major producers planning upgrades to their production facilities quickly, including modifying the existing headframe and shaft at the PCS Cory Site to accommodate a new 1500 tonne per hour hoisting plant. Upon completion of the project, the innovative operations group continuously reviewed methods to increase production and reduce operating costs, allowing PCS to continue being competitive on the world market. This paper will describe the design challenges encountered during the development of the infrastructure around an operating facility whilst minimizing down time, schedule, capital and construction costs. This paper will also explore the strategy to increase capacity of the newly commissioned hoisting plant. BACKGROUND Potash production is a major Saskatchewan industry, and has played a significant role in the economy for over 40 years. Production commenced in 1962 when water problems were overcome at the International Minerals and Chemical (IMC) mine near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. A surge of development by other companies resulted in twelve companies opening ten mines by 1970. In 1975 Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan was created by the government of Saskatchewan and shortly thereafter purchased several mines in Saskatchewan, including the Cory Mine (Cory), near Saskatoon. Cory has been in operation since 1968 and is located 12 km (7.5 mi) west of Saskatoon in central Saskatchewan. The mine is located in the center of the world’s largest potash deposit, 1,000 m (3300 feet) below surface. PCS has embarked on sizable capital expansions of more than CDN $7 billion. The Cory CDN $1.6 billion expansion was expected to raise operational capability of the site to 2.7 million tonnes per year, an increase of 1.9 million tonnes per year (MTPY). To achieve 2.7 MTPY of finished product and considering the 22.6% average production recovery1, 12 MTPY of ore must be hoisted to surface for processing. To deliver this rate required upgrading of the hoisting plant to 1500 tonne per hour (TPH). To accomplish this ambitious challenge, creative thinking, careful planning and a cohesive team was needed to work together to ensure the schedule, budget and most importantly the work was completed safely"

"IntroductionSafety and training in the mineral industry will always be issues that are hotly debated and discussed.The nature of the mining industry, where people and equipment work in close quarters deep below the earth's surface, attracts a great deal of public attention and concern, especially in the areas of safety and related training activities. This concern has been carried over into the mineral processingsector which is, of course, a vital part of the mining industry.It is therefore imperative that mining people closely examine the policies, procedures and programs presently in place to determine if they meet the needs of the industry and its employees. Everyone stands to benefit: the companies, employees and the mineral industry as an important segment of the Canadian economy.Phrases such as ""Safety First"", ""Safety is Number One"", have a role to play in industrial safety programs but in reality are a shallow approach to the magnitude of the challenge. An industry must produce its products in a cost-effective way, with good employee relations. None of these objectives can be successfully achieved unless accompanied by good safety performance. Accidents both on and off the job result in very poor efficiency, high costs and poor employee relations.This chapter, Safety and Training, outlines those major areas that the author believes are necessary components for an industrial safety, health and training program, but are not all inclusive. More will surely be added as additional problem areas requiring attention are identified. The major sections discussed are: Development and Implementation of a Safety Program; Occupational Health; Training; and Audit Procedures.The author has drawn on his experience as both a mill superintendent, mine manager and superintendent of safety, health and training. The approach developed at loco Metals Manitoba Division is frequently used in this paper with examples and excerpts to better illustrate the subject, but does not represent the full scope of programs in place in the Division."

G-ResourcesÆ Martabe Mine in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a US$700 M world-class and world-scale operation in a country which, with a few notable smaller scale exceptions, has had no significant hard rock mining development in more than ten years.The mine was commissioned in the middle part of 2012 and poured first gold on 24 July. At full production Martabe will produce 250 000 oz/a of gold and 2 - 3 Moz/a of silver at cash costs in the lowest quartile. The mine location is on the west coast of North Sumatra, which experiences annual rainfall of 4 m with no notable dry season, adjacent to seismically active fault zones, and relatively close to a rural community of 31 000 people with no significant industrial experience.The management team has successfully forged strong links with the various government departments and levels in Jakarta, North Sumatra Province and the local Regencies; developed long-term relationships with the various community groups within the local district of Batangtoru to build a sustainable social licence; has dealt with the physical and environmental challenges presented by the project location, and has successfully raised more than US$900 M over a period of three years for the original acquisition then the development of the project.Whilst in its infancy of operation, the mine is set up to deliver a long-term sustainable future for the company, the shareholders, and the people of Batangtoru and all stakeholders generally. The quality of the project execution and commitment by the company will ensure that maximum value can be delivered from Martabe, not just for the current mine life but from the significant exploration potential that exists on the large tenement area that the company has access to for 30 plus years.This paper will deal with the physical challenges associated with the design, the Indonesian government regulatory requirements for mine development, the social aspects of building a world-class project in a developing area, the in-country commitment necessary for any project development anywhere in the world and the successful funding arrangements for the mine development.CITATION:Albert, P G, Siahaan, L H D and Duffy, T J V, 2012. "Drilling results from the established levels at AngloRouyn Mines Limited had indicated inadequate tonnages to meet the planning schedule. It was decided to develop the main zone of the orebody below the bottom working level of the mine. The orebody dips north at an average of 50 degrees and plunges to the west at about 10 degrees. Due to the need for rapid development of this area, a decision was made to use trackless equipment.This paper describes the method used and highlights the use of small 5-ton diesel trucks as carriers for the 2-cu.yd LHD machine. The method achieved advances of about 1,000 feet per month, at a dip of 12 degrees over a length of close to 2,000 feet, using as few as 20 men per day."

The Chino Smelter embarked on a program to reduce smelter emissions. Fugitive sulfur dioxide and particulate emissions were reduced by (i) removing the flash furnace settling chamber and (ii) installing a baghouse, to treat converter secondary emissions. Neutralization plant capacity was increased, to accommodate increased flow from the flash furnace off-gas cleaning system and to reduce costs.

In cooperation with the National Institute of Environmental Health Science and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted grinding research on non-asbestiform tremolite. The goal of this effort was to prepare ground tremolite samples containing a considerable percentage of acicular grains with aspect ratios (approximately = 8um long with widths = 1 um) similar to those of asbestos particles suspected of causing cancer, Optical-and electron-microscopic examinations were used to monitor the size and shape of the grains in the ground products. Although customized milling techniques do have noticeable effects in producing acicular grains, the prismatic nature of fracturing in the non-asbestiform tremolites limited the number of acicular grains that could be purposely produced, and indicates that the likelihood of high concentrations of acicular particles occurring under normal mining and milling conditions is small.

In Stockholm a new road traffic system called Södra Länken (Southern Link) will be in operation in late 2004. The total length of the road system is 6 kilometres of which 4,5 kilometres run through tunnels under suburbs immediately south of Stockholm inner City. The new traffic tunnels together with existing Metro tunnels, which mostly are in rock, will be the determining factor for blast design for many projects in the future. To set reasonable and safe permitted vibration levels the Swedish National Road Administration, Stockholm Region and Stockholm Transport Rail System have together financed a project to determine guide levels for blast-induced vibrations in traffic tunnels in rock. The purpose of the project has been to establish guide levels that are appropriate for different types of rock tunnels.

"Temporal and other factors contributing to the occurrence of occupational accidents at an underground coal mine in Turkey between 1992 and 2000 have been analyzed. The time period of the study spanned the transition from hand-worked mining methods (1992 to 1996) to hand-worked mining methods and mechanized mining methods (1997 to 2000).The mine selected for the study employed an average of 5,835 men per year on three separate eight-hour production shifts for 302 d/y (Sundays are not worked, and there are 11 holiday days per year). Production on an annual basis averaged 190,000 tons per year between 1992 and 1996, and 300,000 tons per year between 1997 and 2000.The purpose of the study was to determine which, if any, of the factors studied contributed to the occurrence of accidents so that the mine could take the necessary steps to reduce the risk to the workforce. Regression analysis was used to determine the strength of the relationship between each factor studied and the number of occupational accidents.The strongest relationships observed were between the age of the employee, the day of the week, and the total yearly labour."

THE first application of the cementation process took place in the year 1864, according to H. Standish Ball, when a break in the brickwork lining at a depth of 270', in one of the Rhine Preussen pits near Homburg, was sealed by running in milk of cement from the surface by means of a small hand pump. At about the same time Monsieur Portier adopted the method in France for repairing breaks in shaft lining. Figure 1 is descriptive of the Portier system and is of interest when compared with modern practice. During the next thirty years numerous attempts were made to improve the process; the general method used in sinking being to put clown bore holes outside the perimeter of the shaft for the purposes of injection. The cementation process was first recognized as an important as-set to mining in 1896 when Monsieur A. Francois developed his method of boring and injecting inside the shaft below the permanent water level. "During the early development of the Mattabi Mine in 1970, discussions with the Ontario Government revealed their policy of prohibiting, as much as possible, the development of new, isolated, single-industry townsites. Subsequently, Mattabi located its first housing in the Township of Ignace, which is situated 50 miles from the site of the mine and plant. Over 200 employees now commute 100 miles daily to and from work.This paper describes the experience gained and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a remote townsite."

The INMETCO process has been modified so as to recover nickel. chromium and Iron from a wide variety of metal containing waste-streams. This now includes the recovery of metals from spent acid solutions such as chromic acid etching I1quids. nJcke1 and chromium plating solutions; stainless and superalloy pickling solutions. etc. In addition. hazardous electric furnace stainless steel and. superalloy baghouse bags can be processed so as to recover the valuable metall1cs. A detailed review of the above new recovery techniques w1ll be discussed as well as the current operating methods used at INMETCO.

Mine managers need better information to locate new opportunities and then to assess the effect of their decisions. We are developing the Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) and its two major modules, the Pattern Recognition System (PRS) and the Knowledge Representation Subsystem (KRS) to automatically provide the information from monitoring system sensors. This paper focuses on the KRS Algorithms that extract key information from lists of time study type event sequences. Because a static system cannot operate effectively in a dynamic mining environment, we are prototyping an index based technique that allows the system to adapt itself to this dynamic environment.

The 29th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Star Pass Resort, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. Each year, one living inductee, two recipients of Medals of Merit, and up to five honorees from mining history are chosen by the MFSW for their outstanding contributions to the mining industry. Chilean Minister of Public Works and former Minister of Mining, Laurence Golborne Riveros will be the guest of honor, featured speaker and inductee into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Golborne Riveros was instrumental in managing the rescue of the 33 Chilean miners in October 2010 and in the coordination/management of the ?townsite? for family members, rescue support and the media. His engineering background and executive management skills made him ideally suited to assist in both a technical and managerial role in this emergency.

Abstract. This paper puts forward the concept of &apos;radial&apos; plant layout where all crushing, milling and treatment operations are preferably concentrated in one central area and these separate stages are connected by radiating conveyors to and from outside storage areas. This system is contrasted to the more customary system of &apos;linear&apos; plant layout where the crushing, milling and often the treatment operations follow one after the other in separate buildings. The radial system simplifies and improves contral and supervision to a very considerable extent and can lead to a form of continuous plant operation with the separate sectors shutting down in succession for necessary maintenance while maintaining the overall plant operation. The paper is illustrated with example: from past and recent diamond treatment plant practice in South Africa which demonstrate the reduction in plant labour achieved by this system. Previous objection to this type of layout on the grounds that it inhibited plant expansion are shown to be unwarranted. Radial Layout for Increased Treatment Plant Productivity A great deal of time and trouble is spent by highly qualified and experience( metallurgists in developing the right treatment process for a given ore. This process is then often expressed in a treatment flowsheet of the type shown in Fig. 1 which shows a typical diamond plant. This flowsheet, when completed, is commonly handed over to the mechanical engineers who then design the layout of the equipment indicated on the flowsheet and produce the working drawings upon which the detailed construction of the treatment plant will be based. It is an unfortunate fact that the tedious and time-consuming juggling of equipment and inter-plant transportation is often left to hard-working draughtsmen who, however capable&apos; in their field, lack practical experience in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the treatment plants they design. As a result many plants have been produced which, while they satisfy the requirements of the flowsheet with minimum capital requirements, cost far more than should be necessary to op¬erate and maintain. It is often possible to change individual items of equipment which do not achieve the performance required of them, but it is usually extremely expensive to change the basic layout of the plant if this should be found to be unsatisfactory. It should therefore be recognised that great care and attention should be spent on consideration of the basic layout of any treatment plant and that the views of both designers and operators should be fully regarded before settling upon the inevitable compromise dictated by the varying requirements of process-engineering and economics. It is unfortunate that this important subject receives such scant regard in the standard ore dressing text books and hand-books, being usually dismissed in a few paragraphs.

This is the second review of developments in coal mining engineering (see C.I.M .M. Transactions, Vol. LI, 1948, pp. 262- 264) and covers the period from October, 1948, to January, 1950. Mechanization The period under review was characterized by the intensive development of appliances providing for complete mechanization of coal-face operations. A variety of machines are being evolved or have already been placed on the market which embody the principle of &apos;continuous mining&apos;. This trend can be observed in all coal producing countries. In the United States, two continuous mining machines have been developed for entry and room application and by the end of 1 949 were being used in a number of mines. These are the Joy Continuous Miner in which the coal is ripped from the face by means of multiple cutter chains, and the Jeffrey Colmol employing cutters on rotating arms for chipping the coal from the face. The Joy machine is made in tw6l models, 34-in. and 48-in. high and designed for a range of seam thicknesses from 3-ft. -t-in. to 4-ft. 6-in. and from 4-ft. 6-in. to 8ft., respectively. Some experience has been gained with this machine and accounts of its performance are already appearing in the technical literature. The Jeffrey-Colmol has a more limited range of working height. The first model, 38-in. high, was designed for seams about 4 feet in thick11ess but more recently the 28-in. low model has been placed on the market for seams 2-ft. 6-in, to 3-ft. 4-in. in thickness. Conventional mobile loading machines of the gathering-arm type are continuing to yield high production under suitable conditions, and improvements or modifications of the basic principle are embodied in new machines as, for example, the Jeffrey mobile (conveyor) loader with extensible (gathering-arm) head developed for conveyor mining.

In 1955, the results of a regional, geological interpretation of the northern portion of New Brunswick were used as a basis for selecting, for intensive exploration, three areas in which structural and stratigraphic conditions were believed to be favourable. Airborne electromagnetic work, in one of these areas, provided the justification for acquiring the Murray group. Even though the initial results were discouraging, this geological interpretation, combined with the fortuitous discovery of cop• per-bearing float, was sufficient reason for carrying out further work using geochemical methods. This work finally resulted in the discovery of the Murray massive-sulphide deposit, after about eighteen months of coordinated exploration on the property.
