The Ohio River Tunnel Project encountered multiple unexpected geotechnical challenges such as crown and invert instability due to the overstress condition affecting the strata above, below, and in the tunnel alignment during and after TBM excavation along with the potential for methane inflow. This paper showcases how the orientation of a tunnel alignment has a significant impact on how in-situ geological stress can impact the excavation of a tunnel from the contractor’s point of view and how geological features influence gas inflow to the alignment over time.

Trackless battery powered haulage vehicles have been in operation in British coal mines principally for longwall face transfer and personnel transportation. Changes within the industry have resulted in the introduction of room and pillar coal mining methods and the introduction of increasingly heavier longwall roof supports This has resulted in the introduction of: • Battery powered coal haulage machines, which, without the need for trailing cables, increase productivity within room and pillar mining. • Battery powered longwall shield haulers which are capable of carry ing the heaviest shield supports currently being utilised within the British coal mining industry. The conventional machines have been adapted from an American design to meet the requirem ents of European legalisation. This has seen the- emphasis being placed upon the supplier with the European M achinery Directive being introduced, necessitating the assigning of a 'C E ' m ark to each vehicle. Battery vehicle technology has advanced to meet the demands of the ever changing market and will no doubt he further adapted to meet the requirement of the British coal mining industry.

Executives in the mining industry are facing dramatically changing market expectations on reporting and transparency regarding the environmental and social impacts of projects, supply chains and products. Companies increasingly need to disclose the governance procedures they have in place to ensure communities, investors, employees, and Indigenous partners are effectively managing social and environmental risks. These disclosure requirements begin during exploration and carry through to all stages along the project life cycle. This type of environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure is referred to as ESG performance by the investment community. ESG is not a new concept, and it builds on and is intertwined with many concepts such as corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility, eco-efficiency, triple bottom line thinking, life cycle management and many others. This paper will explore how mining companies can develop a credible ESG governance approach and strategy that will reduce risk, open opportunities, and create value. This paper will summarise ESG trends and drivers, discuss the economics and investors’ perspective towards ESG, and outline leading ESG standards and guidelines of interest to investors, regulators, communities and other stakeholders. Linkage of ESG to global sustainability efforts such the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Global Compact will also be addressed.

"A single unit gas fired power station was being built on the edge of the Gulf of Thailand in 2001. The soil conditions consisted of very soft to soft Holocene Marine Clay, and the site was part of a coast line which had been subsiding below high water mark for some time. In order to provide access around the power station a road system in a figure-of-eight formation was required, and this also needed to be above the design flood level, allowing for future settlement. A ground improvement scheme was proposed and constructed, which consisted of two spacings of prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) over two depth ranges, vacuum consolidation and pre-loading, and rigid inclusions.During the construction phase, the vacuum consolidation was applied for 202 to 221 days in different zones, and monitoring allowed a prediction that the future settlement, including secondary consolidation over a period of 25 years, would be within the range of 175 to 355 mm, which met the contract requirement of less than 400 mm.The power plant was completed and became operational in 2003. Monitoring of the road levels continued, as did the settlement, and in early 2010 the total settlement since the end of vacuum consolidation had reached about 800 mm. The monitoring data both during the ground treatment and for the following 7 years is presented and analysed. This is supported by numerical analysis using 3D finite element methods which shows good agreement with the measured data, and allows a preliminary explanation as to why the predictions were so far out.BACKGROUNDAfter a period of bidding and negotiation, the Eastern Power and Electric Co Ltd (EPEC), an Independent Power Producer, entered into an agreement with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) in November 1997 to sell them power. In 1999 an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract and an Operation and Maintenance contract were signed with a supplier to provide a gas-fired (with oil as a back-up fuel) 350 MW combined cycle power plant in Bang Bo, Samut Prakarn Province, east of Bangkok. The site of the plant at Bang Bo is located immediately to the east of the Samut Prakarn Wastewater Treatment Plant, adjacent to the Gulf of Thailand (see Figure 1) in an area of very soft to soft marine clay (Bangkok clay) having low shear strength and potential for excessive settlement. The site layout comprises the main Power Plant components of generating block, cooling towers, fuel unloading area and storage tanks, switchyard and administration block, separated by access roads."

This great industrial district of New York stretches along about fifty miles of shore line on the eastern end of Lake Erie and the Niagara River, embracing the two counties of Erie and Niagara, with the city of Buffalo about in the center. This location at the junction of the eastern end of the Great Lakes and the western boundary of the State, a great focal point of land and water, transportation, guaranteed the development of the Frontier. Although the first white settlers came to this section in 1784, it was not until after the turn of the nineteenth century that real development started. Perhaps the most significant influence in the early days was the completion of the Erie Canal between Buffalo and Albany in 1825. A QUARTER century ago this country was producing an extraordinary quantity of iron and steel, with a decisive influence on the outcome of the first World War. Today this country is again demonstrating its industrial capacity with telling results. If this lapse of time has confirmed the opinion that man learns little from experience with respect to human relationships, at least we can derive some consolation from the knowledge that in the same period we have made huge strides industrially, and particularly in the steel industry. The differences represented by 25 years are striking, and have resulted from a multitude of changes that have contributed to the present-day high state of our pig iron and steel manufacture.

AN acute current shortage of copper, with the prospect that conditions may become worse, indicated by Office of Production Management information. Present estimates of copper requirement for defense indicate that nearly all the available metal will be required in the future for this purpose. Severe dislocations are, expected, but the objective is to distribute the copper available for civilian use in such a manner as to minimize these dislocations. The advisory committee on metals and minerals has been asked for a suggestions which may be helpful in meeting this situation.\

AT the Tooele custom lead-zinc ore concentrator,' two sections, each having a daily capacity of 500 to 600 tons, are operated on slightly different types of ores with but little difference in flow sheet and reagents. The ores comprising the two general classes are the coarsely crystalline type, with low pyrite and sphalerite low in iron content, from the Park City district, and the more finely disseminated higher pyrite ores from Bingham, which are more difficult to treat by flotation. Laboratory testing determines with which general class a new ore will work better. The ores are crushed to minus 1 1/4-in. size at either the Utah Ore Sampling Company's plant at Murray, Utah, the Tooele smelter sampling plant, or the crushing plant at the concentrator. The ores for each section are mixed to maintain as nearly as possible uniform lead and zinc contents.

WITHIN recent years people have begun to realize the importance and significance of the mining and allied industries. The leading part the engineer plays in civilization is becoming recognized. However accurate quantitative knowledge of the industrial importance of mining is still seldom possessed except by those close to this business. It is true that there are a few who go to the extreme and represent the whole progress of civilization as a reflection of man's gradual mastery of mineral utilization, but on the whole, the magnitude of the-industry is underestimated. In this paper I shall call attention briefly to the importance of mining in the United States, in Canada, and in the world. Ordinarily, the annual primary mineral production of the United States is about $5,500,000,000. The average for the last 5 years has been a little over that, but last year, sadly enough, it was less than 31/4 billion. Just now, we are on the decline, and have been for the last two years. In Canada, the 5-year average was about $268,000,000, and last year it was 227 million. Due in part to gold mines (in 1930, for the first time, Canada's gold production exceeded that of the United States), the Canadian average is holding up better than ours. Average world mineral production over the last -5 years has been estimated at about $12,000,000;000 whereas in 1931 it was less than than 8 billion.

THE stage is set for the 1930 Annual Meeting. It will take place in the Engineering Societies Building. Feb. 17, 18, 19 and 20, and an unusual pro- gram of technical papers, symposia, lectures and addresses, interspersed with luncheons, dinners, excursions and worthwhile entertainment for the four days has been arranged. The curtain rises on Monday morning and the first act is by the entire company-registration. Then the meeting hits its stride, for there are ten technical sessions on Monday, and the range of subjects includes most of the Institute membership. The Committee on Coal and Coal Products, which is about to become the Coal Division, presents a symposium of a dozen or more papers on Coal Classification, concluding its afternoon session with several papers on general subjects. At its luncheon between sessions, C. E. Bockus, president of the National Coal Association, will be the honored guest. Papers of theoretical character will be discussed at the morning session of the Committee on Geophysical Prospecting; at its afternoon session there will be presented summaries of results obtained at various properties by methods described at previous meetings of this group and permanently recorded in "Geophysical Prospecting," published by the Institute early in 1929. Members of the Petroleum Division should not overlook the paper by Theodor Zuschlag, on this Committee's program. It is entitled, "Oil Structure Mapping by the Sundberg Method." Members of the Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals divisions will find it profitable to attend the session on Engineering Education on Monday afternoon. E. A. Holbrook has arranged a program of ten-minute talks on Metallurgical Education which are designed to get down to "brass tacks." and the practical man may, in discussion, contribute as well as learn. At 5 p. m. Thomas T. Read will lecture+ at Columbia University, on "Recent Progress in Economics of the Mineral Industries."

MINERAL production in almost all European countries suffered a sharp setback because of the war. Plants were damaged, transportation facilities disrupted, and labor dispersed and demoralized. Since the war, due to lack of confidence and economic stability, there has been little incentive to rebuild and expand the mineral industries even though a big demand at high prices exists for mineral products. Most mining and metallurgical companies in Europe hesitate to invest their capital because of the tendency towards nationalizing industry, high taxes, and low output of labor, as well as the deficiency of mine supplies and equipment within their countries. In short, they do not have faith in the future, and for these same reasons and fears most of the mining companies in America will not risk capital investment in Europe. In Europe, including the United Kingdom, free enterprise has been losing ground and as a result the foundation of their economic welfare is being undermined. American mining interests willing to take the initiative could help in counteracting this influence if a way were found for them to co-operate with the European producer without too great a risk.

EVERY forward step in civilization brings with it an increase in population and increasing demand for raw materials. Modern civilization, because of its industrial development, depends more and more for its well-being on ample supplies of raw materials; the higher the type of that civilization, the greater its dependence. No fact is more obvious than that the raw materials should be put to use with greatest prudence and efficiency. National life is not a matter of a decade or a century. Conservation is no longer a matter for political discussion; it is a vital element in the future welfare of all nations. Unfortunately, to the minds of many, conservation means the locking up of natural resources, their arbitrary withdrawal, bringing about, in short, a condition of industrial stagnation. This has occurred in past centuries through misdirected governmental effort. Two eminent engineers have variously defined conservation as follows:

It is well known that carbon management is essential for minimising soluble gold losses in carbonin- leach (CIL) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits. Even so, carbon measurements remain predominantly a manual operation with a low amount of control and automation around CIL and CIP reactors. Carbon inventory, i.e. knowing the carbon concentration in each reactor, is crucial for good carbon management. CarbonSense, a novel in-situ measurement system, was therefore developed for continuous monitoring of the carbon concentration in each reactor and paves the way for more advanced control in gold operations. The carbon management and optimisation system is based on Outotec® HSC Sim dynamic process simulations where each process component is modelled in detail. Generated models are validated with real data from a particular operation. The simulator will allow for the carbon control sequence to be realistically tested and the efficiency optimised by controlling the feed and discharge pumps in a hazard- and risk-free process environment. Furthermore, by combining CarbonSense and Outotec® gold courier (online soluble gold measurements) continuous feed-forward and feedback information can be obtained. The optimiser will then define the best running parameters based on the cost function of gold production versus intrinsic factors such as utility costs and adsorption time. Eventually, the application can be installed parallel with a real process island and it can be continuously calibrated with real-time process data. The dynamic model will then create future predictions for the entire process island. The example case presents a CIL circuit, which is simulated using Outotec® HSC Chemistry Sim and operated through Outotec® ACT (Advanced Control Tool) application. The current method employed to quantify the efficiency of separation of ferromagnetic ores by wet low intensity magnetic drum separators (WLIMS) incorporates the use of a conventional benchscale Davis Tube (DT) operating at a magnetic field intensity that is equivalent to that of the drum’s surface. However, empirical research has indicated that the magnetic force, or force index, rather than the magnetic field intensity, is the critical factor in the operation of the magnetic separator (Murariu and Svoboda, 2002). Furthermore, the current aforementioned practice would yield incorrect information as the magnetic field gradients produced by a typical WLIMS unit differs considerably from that of a bench-scale DT. In light of this, research on magnetite focusing primarily on the scale-up of DT results to pilotscale WLIMS were undertaken. The investigation entailed a comparative study between that of a typical WLIMS circuit and a bench-scale DT. The purpose was to practically evaluate the performance of a WLIMS, bench-marked against the traditional laboratory-scale DT unit. Moreover, the secondary objective was to produce a magnetite concentrate graded at 69% Fe, 95% -45μm, as a suitable source of separation media for use in the Dense Medium Separation (DMS) industry. Fundamental findings of previous works provided a framework for the study, however, a realworld approach was explored. Preliminary testwork conducted at Mintek investigated the performance of a DT and a typical multi-stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit (operating at 1000 Gauss at the surface). The results attained indicated that a DT operating at high intensities is comparable to a single rougher WLIMS stage. Additionally, it was observed that the three stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit performed similarly to the DT operating at 1000 Gauss. Moreover, piloting testwork was undertaken, carried out in larger 380mm drums, and the results attained showed a strong correlation with laboratory-scale findings. Copper smelter flue dusts often cannot be directly recycled to the smelting process and accumulate as hazardous wastes requiring environmentally acceptable disposal. Because of the limited amount of flue dust, a separate copper extraction process must be simple and require-a small plant investment. A flue dust process has been developed, consisting of the following steps: (1) roasting a pelletized mixture of hydrated lime and flue dust to fix arsenic and sulfur as insoluble calcium salts, (2) heap leaching the roasted pellets with a buffered ammonia/ammonium salt solution to extract copper as an ammine complex in a lined cell that is the final repository of the leached pellets, and (3) boiling ammonia from the lixiviant to precipitate copper. Condensed ammonia and the filtered solution are returned to leaching. Heap leaching in the final repository cell lowers the capital investment significantly compared with competing extraction processes. Chemistry with respect to arsenic, sulfur and copper is discussed.

Giant Yellowknife is located 600 air miles north of Edmonton on the north shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. In its 24 years of operation some 7,730,000 tons of ore have been treated to yield $175,000,000 worth of gold.The gold ore occurs at irregular intervals throughout a fold-like sericite schist zone cutting Precambrian rocks. The ore is characterized by 40 to 80% quartz - carbonate and about 10% pyrite and arsenopyrite. Considerable amounts of stibnite and antimony sulpho-salts are also present. Gold is finely divided in the native state existing in complex association with the sulphides. In most instances stibnite is barren but minor values are evident on occasion. Visible native Fold, quite prevalent in the early operating years, is, practically non-existent today. It was readily apparent from mineral dressing investigations conducted in .1944 that Giant ore would be difficult to treat. By 1948 a flow sheet had been established and operations began. In the ensuing years, changing ore characteristics necessitated modifications to some process steps and complete abandonment of others. By 1962 the major metallurgical problems were solved and all that remained was the refining of operating performance to its highest level.With one or two exceptions today's operation follows the practice established by 1962 (Fig. 1 - Flowsheet).

This paper reports on an industry and Australian Research Council funded research project, TAILLIQ, that is a joint initiative between four Australian Universities. The paper discusses the accuracy with which the critical void ratio can be determined for a given tailings; it does this by presenting the results from a ‘round robin’ study in which 18 geotechnical laboratories around the world participated, testing the same tailings (sampled from a gold mine in Western Australia). The results were variable, although a reasonable number were very similar, as described in the paper. The paper provides additional test data for sandy silt gold tailings recovered from a sponsor’s site in Australia, including preliminary calibration chamber test data, results from direct simple shear tests and characterisation tests to determine unsaturated geotechnical properties.

Construction-induced earthborn vibrations have long been recognized as a potential problem with respect to the constructed environment and various vibration criteria are in use to prevent damage. A special case of construction vibration control is the protection of early-age or ?green? concrete. Unlike limits for damage prevention to building stock, there is no rational, widely accepted limit for protection of early-age concrete. Numerous criteria have been proposed or reported in the literature and the most relevant and rational proposals are summarized herein. These findings are applied to a case history involving both bored and driven piles. Vibration measurements were made during pile driving activities and the vibration magnitude was evaluated with respect to the exposure of freshly-placed and curing concrete to the earthborn vibrations. The maximum vibration magnitude at the applicable distances from pile driving was on the order of 0.3 inches per second. Based on the most persuasive literature, threshold values of 0.8 inches per second or even 1 to 2 inches per second for the protection of green concrete appear to be well-supported. Consequently, it was concluded that the pile driving activities and bored pile construction could proceed simultaneously.

Optimising the configuration of infill drill holes is an important step during mineral exploration campaigns. However, this optimisation process encompassing all possible drilling configurations within a mineral deposit is highly combinatorial and hard to solve in a reasonable time. This paper proposes using spatial clustering algorithms to divide the orebody into contiguous zones and target the best zones with infill drilling in order to reduce the size of this optimisation problem. Several clustering algorithms are assessed in a spatial context on hypothetical datasets. This evaluation shows that the hierarchical density-based spatial clustering application with noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm can be used in combination with the uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) dimensionality reduction algorithm to identify contiguous zones in the orebody.

A project's rate of return (ROR) [The list of all the acronyms used in his text is provided at its end.], be it an internal or external one, usually needs to be approximated. The success and efficiency of an approximation procedure depend on the quality of the initiating parameters such as bounds or seed values (guesses). Current approximation procedures commonly use bounds and guesses dictated by intuition rather then by mathematical consideration. The paper presents three ROR-bounding and six ROR-guessing approaches and examines their suitability on the examples of the typical project cash flow patterns.
