Some relationships were established among crystallographic orientation , rollability , deformation texture , annealing behavior , slip planes , and ductile- brittle bend transition temperature of molybdenum single crystals . Six large molybdenum single crystals obtained from an ingot melted by electron beam were oriented by X - ray diffraction and rolled on crystallographic planes of low indices in a known direction . During room temperature rolling , cleavage occurred on 100 type planes . At 300 ° C the crystals were rolled to 95- percent reduction in thickness . The crystals ( 001 ) [ 110 ] and ( 011 ) [ 100 ] were most easily rolled . Pole figures were used to correlate the deformation textures of the rolled crystals with the initial crystallographic orientation . Several of the textures which developed could be explained as a rotation about a < 110 > axis of symmetry . The cube crystal ( 001 ) [ 100 ] retained much of its " cubic " orientation . The (001 ) [ 110 ] crystal developed the simplest texture , whereas the ( 211 ) [ 113 ] and ( 211 ) [ 120 ] crystals developed the most complex textures . The 1 - hour recrystallization temperature of the crystal ( 211 ) [ 113 ] was 700 ° C , which is about 300 ° C lower than that of commercial polycrystalline molybdenum . The poles of the slip planes ( as determined from gross slip lines at relatively low magnification ) tended to lie within 20 to 60 degrees of the pole of the rolling plane . The Knoop hardness was slightly dependent upon crystallographic orientation but more dependent upon rolling direction . The ductile- brittle bend transition temperature was dependent upon the rolling orientation and the dislocation density .

Numerous populations of assays have been simulated for a range of assay values representative of low-grade mineral deposits to facilitate the study of problems encountered in evaluating these deposits. Analysis of these simulated populations of assays (obtained by using statistical probability models for the simulation) makes possible the quantification of the effects of (1) various composite assay intervals, (2) ore reserve computational methods, (3) uneven assay intervals, and (4) various cutoff grades on both the precision and the accuracy of the estimated average grade and tonnage of ore.

This paper proposes a new method to estimate the percentage of load carried by the gob in underground coal mines using a new parameter that introduces the site-specific overburden geology. The new parameter was defined as the total strong layer thickness (tstr) that represents the strength and stiffness of the overburden with a single value. Twelve field measurement case studies from 11 different U.S. longwall mines with different overburden geologies were used to develop the new methodology. 2D numerical models of these case studies (and additional parametric runs with different panel widths) were verified against field measurements such as surface subsidence and stress. Statistical analyses using the model results were conducted for a loading model with the new tstr parameter as one of the variables. The new methodology was found to have a coefficient of determination (R2) of 85% when compared to the field measurements and the parametric models. The method was then tested for practical implementation for pillar design. The percentages of load carried by the gob as estimated by the new method were implemented into the LaModel program, that is commonly used in the coal industry. The results obtained from LaModel were compared to the available field stress measurements, and the new method implemented into LaModel was found to give successful results.

Although it may be impracticable to adopt standard methods of safe working in all branches of mining, and although it may be impossible to establish a standard for each class of work at each mine, some of the iron-mining companies in the Lake Superior district have found that by adopting certain standard ways of performing certain of their operations they insure both more efficient and safer working conditions. Many companies have adopted the idea that the safe way of doing things is also the most efficient and economical way, and, through the medium of their safety conferences they are trying to find the safest way, and the most efficient way, of performing practically every operation about the mines. This activity will, undoubtedly, be continued at every operation which uses this method of doing safety work, because in the advance of industry changes must be made in the results required from time to time. A review of the safety standards and safety suggestions which have been arrived at by some of the companies in this the greatest iron-mining district in the world, will be of value to companies who are interested in improving the safety of their working conditions. So that attention may be directed to the methods in use, rather than to individual companies, all names have been omitted and companies are referred to only by letter.

Rock fragmentation methods in open pit gemstone mining have developed to give priority to safety, environmental sustainability, and crystal integrity. Though effective, traditional drill-and-blast techniques can generate vibrations, adverse emissions, and structural damage, all of which could be detrimental in fragile geological settings. Costs, application in hard rocks, and operational inefficiency remain issues, despite the fact that mechanical excavation and evolving thermal and hydraulic technologies have provided some solutions. In response, there has been a growing interest in non-explosive alternatives, particularly soundless chemical demolition agents. This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of non-blasting rock fragmentation techniques with an emphasis on the efficiency, economic considerations, and operational constraints of soundless chemical demolition agents SCDAs in gemstone mining. Soundless chemical demolition agents technology has shown promising results in preserving gem purity and reducing environmental impact, despite ongoing challenges. These include increased reaction times that hinder output, decreased performance in saturated or high-stress environments, and temperature sensitivity. The contextual relevance of soundless chemical demolition agent application in lateritic regions, such as Zambia, is discussed based on published studies and reported operational experience. Developments in formulation chemistry, fracture modelling, and borehole design have also demonstrated promise in overcoming current limitations. This review identifies the main factors that affect soundless chemical demolition agent performance and brings together reported strategies that can improve their use in high-value mineral extraction through a comprehensive review of recent studies. Ultimately, this article supports a paradigm change towards excavation techniques based on state-of-the-art non-explosive technology that are safer, cleaner, and more accuracy focused.

Keywords: Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits, global warming, energy, auditing Climate change is nowadays being taken increasingly seriously, and the link between global warming and the carbon dioxide released in the generation of energy is coming under increasing scrutiny. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997, after five years of negotiation. So far, about 84 countries have ratified this agreement, under which terms developed countries have strict targets linked to their 1990 level of emissions. However, ?greenhouse gas? (such as carbon dioxide) emissions continue to rise alarmingly. According to the World Resources Institute, greenhouse gas emissions in the USA increased 13% from 1990-2002, while Australia recorded a 22% increase. In contrast, the European Union, a Kyoto signatory, has seen a small decline in its emissions during the same period. This is led by the UK and Germany, who reduced their emissions by 15% and 19% respectively. The concept of ?carbon credits? provides a funding mechanism for companies in the developed world to compensate for some of their CO2 emissions by paying companies (trading credits) elsewhere in the world to undertake projects to bring about reductions in emissions. In the southern African mining industry, it will be possible to get refunded for undertaking voluntary emission-reduction projects. Concern about the environment is creating business opportunities. A preliminary calculation has shown that various projects in South Africa (those in the pipeline, with quite a high likelihood of coming off) could earn a combined total of about R2.5-billion, under the initial phase of the Kyoto Protocol&apos;s carbon-credit scheme, which allows developed-country companies to trade credits with developing countries. A number of local companies are planning projects that could comply with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), in which they will implement techniques to achieve certified emission reductions (CERs) of greenhouse gases. In order to prevent abuse of such a system involving vast sums of money, vigorous audits need to be carried out. A company has to prove it has made real changes and is not simply conducting business as usual under a cloak of claimed environmental improvements. PricewaterhouseCoopers has applied to become one of only a few international agencies that will be accredited to conduct validation and verification of the credits, by auditing what is called the ?designated operational entity?. An independent validator needs to confirm that the project meets the strict requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. The company has to demonstrate that it?s not business as usual. So, if you refurbished every five years, the next refurbishment is not a good CDM project, unless you can demonstrate that you will do something beyond the maintenance - that is what can be registered. So, Kyoto intends to get additional projects going, and the money for that is actually quite good - prices of 14 euros per ton of carbon dioxide not emitted have been seen. The price depends on who takes the risk for non-delivery if a project doesn?t deliver the emission reductions on time. The highly energy-intensive South African mining industry is heavily dependent on coal. There should be many opportunities for the pyrometallurgical industry to come up with creative ideas to reduce emissions, and there is now an additional financial incentive to encourage this. Companies can actually get money in return for doing these types of projects, in addition to the contribution to corporate social responsibility.

The mine development decision is made on completion of exploration to determine whether or not a mineral deposit should be developed to production and, if so, how. This involves the selection of an optimum mine development alternative from a number of technically feasible alternatives and the comparison of this optimum with those of other available investment opportunities. If the optimum is sufficiently attractive, the deposit is developed to production. The selection process is carried out within a framework of corporate objectives and resources. The mine development decision is based on the balancing of two parameters - - rate of production as reflected in plant capacity and cut-off grade. On the basis of available information and experience, detailed revenue and cost &apos;estimates are made for each feasible combination of plant capacity and cut-off grade. What economic evaluation techniques should be applied to these estimates to reduce each alternative to economic indicators that will enable meaningful comparisons and an informed investment decision? This is the essence of the paper. The determination of optimum plant capacity and cut-off grade has been the subject of intensive research efforts by economists and mining engineers (1-7). Their studies are based on marginal analysis and assume that, at the time of decision, certainty conditions prevail with respect to ore reserves, mining costs and mineral markets. The optimum mine development alternative is defined as that which maximizes profitability.

Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group&apos;s ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. In contrast to the equipment described in the two succeeding chapters, this range of equipment, in nearly every instance, superimposes a mechanical movement on the fluid motion to effect separation of the valuable mineral from the waste mineral. The motion may be vertical Gigs), reversing (tables), or rotary (slime plants): however, in common they ""dilate"" the bed of particles to allow preferential settlement of the heavier particles.Description of Process UnitsJiggingJigging is the sorting of different minerals by stratification, based on the movement of a bed of particles relative to a fluid in a vertical plane.The basic construction of a jig is shown in Figure 1. Essentially it consists of an open tank filled with a fluid, normally water, with a horizontal jig screen at the top and with a spigot in the ""hutch"", or bottom compartment, for removal of heavies. The jig beri consists of a layer of coarse heavy particles (ragging) on the jig screen. This ragging is of a specific gravity between that of the minerals it is intended to separate.In operation the bed is made fluid by a pulsating current of fluid to provide stratification. On the upward or pulsion stroke the bed of ragging and slurry is normally Hfted as a mass, then as velocity of the upcurrent decreases it dilates, loosening the whole mass. On the downward or suction stroke it closes slowly again. The ideal is to control this dilation of the bed of material so that the heavier and smaller particles penetrate the interstices of the bed, while the larger heavies fall under a condition akin to ""hindered"" settling."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines assessed mineral resources of the BLM Malheur-Jordan Resource Areas (MJRAs) in southeastern Oregon in 1993 and 1994. The study relied heavily on acquiring and analyzing existing data. In order to efficiently handle and analyze a large quantity of data, a minerals information management program, informally called MINFO, was developed as a frontend for three databases created to store basic information gathered during the minerals resource assessment. The MINFO program will also provide the BLM with a method of tracking and updating minerals information in the future because program modules in MINFO allow the addition of new data and the correction of errors, creation of print files, transfer of data to other database formats, exportation of data to other software packages, and creation of AutoCAD script files to be used in conjunction with AutoCAD to produce maps. The report specifically identifies significant past and present mineral exploration and development activities and possible areas of future mineral exploration and development. These areas are informally designated as areas of development interest or ADIs. The report contains a scenario of what mineral development might reasonably occur in the foreseeable future if the BLM does not substantially change its present resource management plan, and it shows the possible socioeconomic impacts of that development. The uncertainty of the political and economic situation makes it extremely challenging for the USBM to accurately predict a reasonably foreseeable development scenario. The reasonably foreseeable development (RFD) scenario developed by the USBM for the BLM indicates short-term RFD of minerals should have a negligible socioeconomic impact, and longer-term RFD of minerals should have a slight socioeconomic impact on the MJRAs. The mining industry is facing a rapidly changing business and regulatory environment in Oregon. Several signal changes have occurred recently, including State regulations that require significant bonding prior to the startup of "chemical process" mining, an initiative by a special interest group to stop all chemical process gold mining within the State, and an opinion by the Oregon Attorney General (AG) banning all forms of placer mining without exemption. In the AG opinion, not even gold panning is allowed, and the prohibition applies to mining claims on Federal lands. The State legislature may amend the statute to allow small scale placer mining to occur, as was allowed under an AG opinion issued in 1982. These and other changes occurring at the local, State, and National levels are making it more challenging for the mining industry to operate in the United States. Several epithermal gold properties in the MJRAs attracted the mining industry&apos;s interest. Only the Grassy Mountain Project of Newmont Grassy Mountain Corporation may be developed in the next few years. It is probable that at least two other properties will be developed if Grassy Mountain is successful. Mining companies are waiting to see the effect recently promulgated State mining regulations and more stringent proposed regulations, particularly bonding regulations, may have on Grassy Mountain. Resources of bentonite, diatomite, and zeolite are abundant. The almost Ubiquitous stone, sand and gravel, and semiprecious gemstone resources also were examined. Little environmental or socioeconomic impact is expected from reasonably foreseeable development of these mineral resources.

An advanced water-in-oil emulsion hydraulic fluid has been developed which meets defined laboratory performance criteria and which has given fully satisfactory results in a one-year underground mine test in two continuous miners. A novel method of monitoring fluid water content was demonstrated and incorporated into a test kit for use at or near the mine site. Test fluid fire resistance integrity as measured by the MSHA Schedule 30 procedure was maintained during the test and important fire resistance test variables identified.

This circular presents part I of a review of the literature on effects of breathing dusts, with special reference to silicosis, largely in the minim; and allied industries. The literature on this subject is so extensive that no attempt has been made to include all published material but only to assemble some of the more outstanding data on several aspects of the subject. Parts II and III will deal with prevention and treatment of dust diseases and some of the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry, with special reference to mining. Dust diseases arc much before the public at present, and there is good reason to believe that the information on the subject available to the layman is extremely meager; even those rated as experts usually have a more or less theoretical conception of the diseases, their causation, remedies, and prevention, rather than actual experience with them. Until recently little attention has been given to prevention, and the usual attitude of the engineer, upon whom the main reliance for prevention ultimately must devolve, has been to let "sleeping dogs lie" or, more definitely, to "let well enough alone." However, the "laissez faire" attitude no longer is tenable, and in the past few years numerous conditions have caused those engaged in industry, including mining, to bring the subject before the public with a view to ascertaining the facts upon which to formulate remedial measures, primarily preventive.

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimina- tion of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To deter- mine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with refer- ence to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope. Although the hypothesis as to coking quality finds but partial support in the chemical analyses, its consideration has led to a method of predicting from an analysis with a fair degree of certainty whether any given coal will coke by the ordinary process. The unbroken transition between coals originally similar but now classed in widely different groups, whether of the same age or of different ages, as a result of dynamochemical action, appears demonstrated by the analyses as well as by field observation. Statistics for copper consumption from various sources show that the importance of production from secondary sources is increasing. This is of particular significance in countries such as the U.K ., which are totally dependent on secondary material for the supply of home-produced copper . A brief survey of the U.K . industry has shown that, in the past, relatively high profit margins have not encouraged high cap ital investment and development of more sophisticated operating techniques, but set against a background of rapidly escalating operating and energy costs , together with an ever-increasing demand for copper , it is anticipated that the industry will see great changes in the near future. With this in mind, an experimental furnace for continuous smelting of copper-bearing scrap has been developed at the University of Birmingham. This furnace has been designed to combine the conventional operations of blast furnace or reverberatory smelting, usually followed by converting, in one unit, and incorporates many of the features of the WORGRA and Noranda processes for continuous primary smelting . It consists of a long, sloping channel, constructed of chrome-magnesite refractory, which: is churned near the top. Smelting is effected lower down the channel, where iron, etc., in the scrap is oxidized and slagged off with silica flux. Provision is made for oil injection to increase oxidation rates. Metal can flow from the bottom of the channel, and slag from the top, so that a counter-current flow is achieved. The approximate molten capacity is 25 kg. Various scrap charges, both synthetically made and as supplied from various industrial smelters, have been successfully smelted. Metal of 83 -95 % Cu has been produced, depending on the original charge composition and the degree of air injection, although air injection was also found to considerably increase the copper loss to slag. Recoveries of other valuable non-ferrous metals in the charge were good.

Large areas of the anthracite beds in the Wilkes-Barre, Pa., region have been first-mined in such a manner that over half of the original coal has been left underground as pillars to support the overburden. To recover the maximum amount of this remaining coal, improved devices to support the roof while pillars are being extracted are needed. Also needed are suitable backfilling systems that will stabilize the strata during the mining and effectively limit the inevitable subsidence after pillars are removed. Accordingly, the Federal Bureau of Mines furnished 400 yielding steel props that had been purchased abroad, where this type of prop had been used successfully. The cooperating company arranged for concurrent tests with a mechanical stower designed and built by an American manufacturer. In the area in which the experiments were conducted, pillar removal, using conventional timbering, was most difficult because the roof fractured badly, the installation of timbers consumed a substantial part of the work effort, and some coal nearly always was lost. With the application of the yielding props, the time needed for securing the roof was reduced 33.9 percent; production per man-shift was in¬creased over 33 percent; coal recovery was improved more than 9 percent; and the convergence between roof and floor, during mining and backfilling, amounted to as much as 8.03 inches without any break in the roof. However, in September 1953 some roof rock fell in pillar 10 owing to insufficient props in a small area where the ends of three top holes drilled in the coal face extended up into the roof rock.

At first sight, the extinction of a mine fire by the action of some such gas as carbon dioxide would appear to be quite a simple and practicable operation. From a consideration of the theoretical aspects only of the question, it becomes evident that the matter is not so simple as it appears to be at first sight. The fire at the Senghenydd Colliery occurred as the result of the disastrous explosion of October 14th, 1913. This explosion was confined to the west side of the colliery; and as a result the timbers in the main intake on this side were set on fire; but these were soon buried beneath falls, and the tire continued under them. Attempts were made to extinguish it with water, with the aid of chemical extinguishers, and by digging it out; hut these had to he abandoned, and ultimately the fire-zone was sealed off by “ bashings” (stoppings). By December, progress in the decrease of combustion was so slow that it was decided to try the effect of inert gas. The key components of this most critical meeting are not your power point, your maps, or your draft plan for development ? they are instead a genuine, evident and clear demonstration of a sincere desire to develop a positive relationship that is based upon respect, and consideration and understanding of local communities and their interests, needs and desires. Relationship building is the foundation of proactive and positive consultation and accommodation with Aboriginal communities and the tone is set with the first meeting. C3 has refused more clients than we have accepted due most often to the fact that relationships between the company and the Aboriginal community have already devolved into a tense and toxic scenario. Land access and tenure certainty for exploration and mine development is critical to the foundation of a healthy, sustainable and environmentally and economically sound mineral exploration and mining sector. Without certainty confidence to invest in mineral exploration will be severely eroded. We all understand that substantive investments in exploration are required to increase the possibility of discovering, defining and developing new mines. The development of positive relationships based on a shared commitment of understanding, mutual respect and trust by Aboriginal Peoples and the mineral sector can provide the required business certainty and deliver social and economic benefits for local Aboriginal communities.
