"INTRODUCTION The Mineral Ridge-Clay Lick fault system in Crittenden and Livingston Counties, Kentucky, is one of the larger and more important fault systems of the Western Kentucky Fluorspar district. Total production from it up to July 1945 (chiefly since 1900) was approximately 80,000 tons of fluorspar ore, 10,000 tons of which came from the Mineral Ridge Fluorspar Co. tract 1, which was being operated by the Mahoning Mining Co. of Rosiclare, Ill. The fluorspar ore carries lead and zinc that can be recovered by milling, and the Mahoning Co. planned to log-wash the ore at the mine and then mill it in its mill at Rosiclare, The Mineral Ridge Fluorspar Co. properties were examined by O. M. Bishop, an engineer of the, Bureau of Mines, in August 1942. During 1943 and 1314, developments on the properties were under observation by X. B. Starnes, of the Bureau, and it was decided to diamond-drill tracts 1 and 2, as indications seemed favorable for opening up additional fluorspar ore bodies. Drilling was begun March 12, 1945, and was completed July 2, 1945, during which time 12 holed were drilled on tract 1 of the Mahoning Co.'s leases for a total of 3,637.1 feet, and one hole 359 feet deep was drilled on tract 2 of the Jennings lease. The Mineral Ridge-Clay Lick fault system, 4 to 47 feet wide, was encountered in all holes at 126 to 265 feet."

Investigations have been conducted at Chino Mines Company into the effect that SAG mill recycle material (critical size) exerts on SAG mill throughput and specific energy requirements. Tests were conducted on the laboratory, pilot, and plant scales, to evaluate the merits of alternative treatment options. Removing critical size material from the SAG mill circuit has been shown to improve new feed rates by 34% with a reduction in specific energy (kWh/ton) of 33%. Test results obtained to date are presented.

Foreword While the literature on radium is voluminous, there is no single publication available from Canadian sources which attempts to cover at all fully the world radium industry. The comparatively recent developments in the Wilberforce area, and the consequent arousal of public interest in radium, seemed to call for the publication of such a paper which would be intelligible to the layman. To satisfy this apparent need, the writers submit this paper which contains material derived from various sources, and for which the writers make no claim of originality. Direct references are made throughout the paper to sources of information.

In 1998, approximately 57,000 tons of titanium metal was consumed in the form of mill products (1). Only about 5% of the 4 million tons of titanium minerals consumed each year is used to produce titanium metal, with the remainder primarily used to produce titanium dioxide pigment. Titanium metal production is primarily based on the direct chlorination of futile to produce titanium tetrachloride, which is then reduced to metal using the Kroll magnesium reduction process. The use of titanium is tied to its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Aerospace is the largest application for titanium. In this paper, we discuss all aspects of the titanium industry from ore deposits through extraction to present and future applications. The methods of both primary (mining of ore, extraction, and purification) and secondary (forming and machining) operations will be analyzed. The chemical and physical properties of titanium metal will be briefly examined. Present and future applications for titanium will be discussed. Finally, the economics of titanium metal production also are analyzed as well as the advantages and disadvantages of various alternative extraction methods.

This paper addresses two issues affecting the international ferrochromium market as they pertain to the changing pattern of U. S. chromium import dependency. These issues are 1) the long-term ferrochromium production cost differential between the United States and the Republic of South Africa and 2) the ability of Zimbabwe to expand ferrochromium production and exportation. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of chromium in the form of chromite and ferrochromium from 10 market economy countries. South African ferrochromium producers are shown to have a long-term production cost advantage over U.S. producers of $0.03 to $0.04 per pound of contained chromium, in 1981 dollars. Zimbabwean ferrochromium production and exportation are expected to increase in the future. Major expansions of production capacity will be dependent upon alleviating potentially serious constraints in electric power, rail, and port facilities. In the long term, ferrochromium production costs in Zimbabwe are expected to increase faster than the rate of inflation, because as chromite mining from the podiform resources in Zimbabwe decreases, production from the Great Dyke resources will increase.

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2014 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry.Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. current dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Charlottesville, VA; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2014 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop these compilations, statistics may differ depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2014 for 19 nonfuel mineral commodities based on company surveys. Research focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty mineral commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum were compiled for the first time in 2010 because of their increased significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude bauxite, coal and oil and gas. Exploration budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The 2014 SNL company survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered includes companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities"

In the mineral industry, the objective of a mining venture is to extract, process, and market a mineral commodity in such a manner that the profit of the venture is maximized. In a mining venture, a company normally has control over mine production scheduling, the selection and location of processing facilities (mineral beneficiation plants, smelting plants, refineries, or blending facilities), processed ore blending, and the selection of markets. The flexibility of the above factors provides many alternatives to satisfy the needs of each market with regard to quantity and quality of ore. The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical model for determining the alternative that yields the maximum profit. Production planning is generally concerned with the best utilization of fixed resources, more specifically, with the determination of production and inventory levels to meet fluctuating demand requirements. A mine can be any source of ore such as an entire mine, a production unit within a mine, or an independent supplier. The objective of production scheduling is to determine the times at which each mine will be used and to allocate a required level of production. Production planning and scheduling problems are intimately associated with the location of new and existing mines and processing facilities. Although the location of the mines is usually fixed, there can be considerable flexibility in locating new processing facilities, in the selection of the processing plant, and in blending the ore before and after processing.

A survey of in-situ methods for determining bulk electric properties of coal is given. Largely because of the strong dependence of coals properties on operating frequency, different sensing methods have to be adopted for different applications. Evaluation of both established and feasible methods is made in this report from the viewpoint of physical set-up, probing depth, and the type of inversion involved.

Pipelines are subject to multiple threats often requiring quantification of pipeline risk and engineering evaluation of in-line inspection and other data to effect discovery of conditions defined by the regulation. Public concern and pressure from regulatory bodies are accelerating the need for pipeline operators to formalize and intensify their approach to integrity management. Most operators need a phased approach to progressively adopt the most relevant and needed assessments. The organized and relevant assessment steps need to be introduced according to data available and maturity of the integrity management program. Each refinement to the quantification offers distinct advantages to the user. In this paper, the progressive integrity assessment solutions using quantitative methods are presented. Methodologies for engineering evaluation of integrity in-line inspection data for immediate and future integrity are summarized. Corrosion is used as an example, but the approach is applicable to any time-dependent defect based hazard. Strategies for pipeline integrity management are discussed.

The renaissance in extractive metallurgical practices for gold and silver recovery is far from over. This is one conclusion of a three year investigation into innovations in Cold & Silver Recovery by Randol International Ltd. (1981, 1983). The six volume reference report reviews a host of new processes and innovative applications of older metallurgical practices. Some of these were summarized by von Michaelis (1982, 1982a). There are several reasons to expect this renaissance to continue. One reason is the nature of gold and silver deposits. The list of known occurrences of These metals is very extensive. There are literally tens of thousands of prospects but over 99% of these are too low grade, too small or too refractory for a viable operation employing conventional processing.

The occurrence and deportment of manganese in a number of ferromanganese and Mn-bearing iron ore samples from supergene-upgraded deposits, as well as from magnetite banded iron formation (BIF) and magnetite skarn deposits, was characterised in order to provide a basis for improved understanding of the processing characteristics of different ore types and investigate the potential for development of a robust geometallurgical classification for Mn-oxide ores. An understanding of the Mn mineralogy in mixed Fe-Mn deposits is necessary to inform any attempt to separate the Fe and Mn during beneficiation and to understand and predict the behaviour of lump and fine ore products during processing.A suite of analytical techniques was utilised, including hand sorting of lump ore particles, optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)/inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) chemistry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and gas and solid phase pycnometry, in order to elucidate manganese mineralogy, mineral chemistry and mineral textures. Manganomelane group minerals (eg cryptomelane, hollandite), pyrolusite and lithiophorite were the most common manganese oxides in the samples examined. From the microprobe work, there was evidence of probable substitution of Mn, as well as Al and Si, into the structures of goethite and hematite. Manganomelane minerals were often intimately associated with goethite, in particular, and a clarification of this association and the associated Si and Al impurities is fundamental for improved understanding of beneficiation and sintering behaviour of Mn-oxide ores. Due to the poor or very fine crystallinity of some supergene manganese deposits and of some Mn oxide minerals, in particular the extent of overlapping peaks and their variable mineral chemistry, XRD was a problematic technique to equivocally determine Mn mineralogy.For lower-grade, earthy, poorly microcrystalline ores the mineralogical and textural association between mixed Mn, Fe and Al (¦ Si) phases was also critical. The deportment and potential separation of these elements in these deposits, especially Al, was complex, as they were characterised by forms of æhydrousÆ cryptomelane with higher levels of Fe-Al-Si substitution, as well as intimate intergrowths of ochreous-earthy goethite (probably aluminous in part) with cryptomelane, lithiophorite and/or kaolinite.Trace amounts of alkali elements in ferromanganese deposits were considered likely to be preferentially structurally associated with Mn oxides, while lateritic deposits with significant amounts of lithiophorite could contain elevated levels of deleterious impurities; Co and Ni in particular.A combination of solid and gas phase pycnometry proved to be a useful technique for broadly discriminating hematitic, goethitic and mixed Mn oxide-goethite lump particles based upon differences in their envelope and apparent densities. Based upon these preliminary results and ongoing Raman spectroscopy work on manganese deposits sensu stricto, Raman spectroscopy is a technique considered to have promise during targeted research to better link the optical and compositional properties of ferromanganese ore particles. CT-scan (computed tomography scan) analysis could also be combined with Raman spectroscopy and pycnometry to link mineral composition, mineral texture, ore particle textures and particle porosity/permeability to the high-temperature processing behaviour of lump and fines products.CITATION:Peterson, M J, Hapugoda, S, Manuel, J R, Donskoi, E and Poliakov, A, 2013. After nine years of negotiations, the U.N. Conference on the Law of the Sea approved a Law of the Sea Treaty text in April. Israel, Turkey, the United States and Venezuela voted against the text and 17 other nations including Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and West Germany abstained. These nations still have the option of joining the treaty when it is opened for signing in December. However, the Reagan Administration has stated that several provisions of the deep seabed mining portion of the text are unacceptable and it seems unlikely that the United States, at least, will change its position. ALUMINUM Reynolds Metals Co. has criticized an Oregon state plan to relax air pollution standards for aluminum plants. The company feels that relaxation of the rules does not go far enough. Reynolds officials say that they have spent about $31 million at their Troutdale plant for state-of-the-art pollution control equipment, and if they are required to make the pollution reductions called for in the 1986 rules, Reynolds would be forced to close the 40-year-old plant.

There are certain site-specific geological and physical features of a rock mass which control its behavior under the dynamic stresses induced by the action of explosives. It is essential that blasting technology be adapted specifically to those features. There does not exist a single, simple "right" way for each type of blasting operation, but rather each operation must be custom-designed for each site. When this is done, it is often possible to produce unusual but highly desirable end resglts, such as undisturbed narrow rock walls, monoliths and square benches. Although the techniques illustrated here were developed specifically for "sculpture blasting", the geomechanics principles would apply to other types of blasting control, both large-scale and small-scale. Because the techniques are designed more for the purpose of modifying the site responses which would ordinarily be expected than they are to developing new "blasting formulae?, the name "Modified Site Response Blasting" will be used.

Determining the change of stress in rock based on measurements of the deformation of a drill hole is a procedure that is increasing in popularity. A closely related procedure involves the applicat10n of this principle to determine the existing stresses in a rock medium, by cutting free (core drilling) an annulus containing the drill hole. In this Bureau of Mines report, expressions are derived from which one can calculate the stress ellipsoid--the three-dimensional change of stress, or the existing three-dimensional stress field, as the case may be. Study of these equations shows that the stress components in three dimensions can be determined by measurements in only two drill holes, and yields general principles that are useful in planning an efficient program of drilling and measurement. Procedures are given for calculating the least squares estimates of the stress components and their standard errors, and for evaluating or comparing calculated values by means of standard statistical inferences.

The pressure/vacuum lysimeter is being used as an effective vadose zone monitoring device for mining heap leach facilities, tailing disposal ponds and tailing waste sites. Their use has proven reliable for baseline data collection, early warning leakage detection and analyzing geochemical variations in the vadose zone. The lysimeter structure utilizes a closed cylindrical chamber made of PVC or inert material. The soil water intake portion of the cylinder is made of a porous material of low permeability. The application of vacuum or pressure to the unit is via two access tubes from the ground surface. Available soil moisture is drawn by vacuum through porous material into the lysimeter chamber and then collected from the access tubes. Case studies show their usefulness for monitoring around a uranium tailing pond constructed in glacial till material, under heap leach pads and pregnant, barren, and overflow ponds, and investigating the movement of contaminant moisture through old tailing deposits. Relatively easy to install and sample, regulatory agencies and facility operators are accepting and negotiating for their application as a site integrity monitoring device and unsaturated zone research tool. Their use at heap leach facilities lends credibility to solution balance calculations when considering a leachate loss of 5 or 10 percent can make or break a mine's profitability.

Recently the petroleum market has made us aware that we are indeed global natural resource consumers, and as such, we have become captive to fundamental global resource economics and their attendant vagaries. Global resource supply problems are as old as civilization and mineral exploration one of its important catalysts. On the basis of natural resources empires have been expanded and new frontiers have been developed. Global consumption and production might even be viewed idealistically as a system dedicated to optimizing distribution to the consumer. However, this is not the case. Political instability and increased government polarization make dependency on a global market somewhat insecure. The U.S. must evaluate its domestic mineral re- sources on the basis that all metals are critical and that dependency on even the common and base metals may ultimately weaken our domestic economy and our potential international relationships and could cause critical weaknesses as demonstrated by the petroleum problem. This paper evaluates specifically the Duluth Gabbro Complex, of Northeastern Minnesota, (figure l), as a potential resource of critical and strategic metals. First, a chronology of some of the early exploration, will be followed by more recent intensive company studies and preliminary evaluations of economic feasibility. Lastly, metallurgical data, on some optimum conceptual mining plans will allow metal production data to be compared with an estimate of U.S. domestic needs in 1990. The purpose of this paper is to put into focus the difficulty of converting resources into vitally needed reserves.
