The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) was founded in 1969 when a group of scientific and technical societies organized an annual conference and exhibition dedicated to technologies used in the offshore oil, gas and mining industries. Currently, OTC is sponsored by 12 industry organizations and societies. These include: American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG); American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE); American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME); American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE); ASME International Petroleum Technology Institute; Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers/Oceanic Society (IEEE-OES); Marine Technology Society (MTS); Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG); Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME); Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME); Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE); and The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS). OTC also has two endorsing organizations, the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) and the Petroleum Equipment Suppliers Association (PESA), as well as 6 supporting organizations that include the American Petroleum Institute (API), the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMEST), the International Association of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC), the National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA), and the United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA). From its earliest years, the OTC has been held during the first week of May in Houston, TX, initially at the Albert Thomas Convention Center where OTC?69 drew 4200 attendees and 200 exhibitors. As the conference grew and became established as the world?s foremost event for the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection, the venue was changed to the Astrodomain Complex, with technical paper sessions and most exhibits taking place in the Astro Hall. The numbers of attendees and exhibitors varied somewhat over the years, primarily in accordance with the fortunes of the international oil and gas industry. At its height in the early 1980s, OTC registered attendance exceeded 100,000 with more than 2500 exhibitors forcing expansion into the Astro Arena and even the Astrodome.

"The property of Perron Gold Mines, Limited, lies in the southwest corner of Pascalis township, northwestern Quebec. It is approximately 12 miles northeast of the town of Val d'Or.This ground was originally staked by Jack Mathews of Amos in the spring of 1931. Shortly after staking, a quartz vein containing visible gold was uncovered on the south boundary of the property, about 400 feet south of the present shaft. With further prospecting, another spectacular goldbearing vein was found 3,000 feet northwest of the original showing. Subsequently, several programmes of exploration were carried out in search of the main ore zone. By 1933 sufficient ore was outlined to warrant sinking a shaft. The first ore was milled in 1934.Total production from the Perron mine from commencement in 1935 to 1944 has been 317,900 oz. gold having a value of $11,935,106. The average recovery a ton for 1944 was $9.01."

"The Premier mine; owned by Silbak Premier Mines; Limited; is 14 miles from Stewart at the head of Portland canal. Development of the property began in 1918; and since chat time a very large amount of gold and silver as well as some lead and copper have been produced from the mine.The area in the vicinity of the mine is underlain by greenstones tuffs, and sediments of Mesozoic age, belonging to the Bear River formation of the Hazelton group. These rocks are intruded by a stock 2 miles in diameter, composed of orthoclase porphyry and called the Premier porphyry. It sends numerous sill-like and dyke-like tongues into the Bear River formation, and is intruded in turn by a granodiorite outlier of the Coast Range batholith. The orebodies occupy fractures and fracture or shear zones. Primary ore consists chiefly of pyrite, galena, and sphalerite, with some chalcopyrite. The upper 300 feet, or locally 600 feet, contained presumably secondary silver minerals."

TURMOIL has been rampant in the lead producing industry during 1946. The chronic labor shortage was aggravated by various work stoppages in mines, smelters, and refineries, while shortage of materials was widespread. Price uncertainties helped to confuse the situation in many countries and particularly in the United States until the removal of price control in the latter part of the year. At the end of the first year of peace, lead, which had been comparatively plentiful during the war years, was a scarce and high-priced metal throughout the world. It is the hope of the industry that the law of supply and demand, if allowed to operate without interference, will bring about a satisfactory balance between production and consumption. Under these circumstances it is not surprising that there have been few important developments in the metallurgy of lead, though a number of items of general interest to the industry have been reported. An ore body which may prove to be of considerable importance has been discovered at Mpanda, Tanganyika. The scarcity of lead ore is illustrated by the announced reopening of the La Manche lead mine in Newfoundland, idle for 56 years. A new lead producer came into production when Rhodesia Broken Hill started up its new smelter. Lead concentrate of 75 per cent grade is smelted in Scotch hearths and the lead is refined to market grade by the Harris process without desilverizing. Production is about 1000 tons per month. One Australian lead producer, Mount Isa, has returned to lead production after having operated its lead plant for the production of copper during the war. The East Chicago plant of the International Smelting and Refining Co. has been sold to the Eagle-Picher Co.

Coal preparation practice and trends follow, among other factors, production trends in any given area. Considering an area the size of a state, some broad predictions may be made after a review of the annual production records. As this paper is concerned with coal cleaning in Utah, data on its production record are pertinent. Table 1 shows the percentage relation of coal production in Utah to the national total as a single figure up to 1935 which includes all recorded production. From 1935 through 1947 these data are presented by years. It is evident from these data that the production of Utah coal is ascending. The reason for this trend is industrial growth in the West resulting in a population shift which accounts for more people than the normal increase would supply together with Utah's relatively fortunate geographical location and its abundance of good-quality coal. Utah is also hopeful of supplying more coal in the future for West Coast power generati0n.l

E. S. Committee certain Standard Specifications for Copper, all of which were adopted or in process prior to Jan. 1, 1920, and sent with the standards the following histories of development and statements of use. FOR SOFT OR ANNEALED COPPER WIRE (B3-15) These specifications were originaly adopted by. the American Society for Testing Materials in 1912. They were prepared by a committee of the Society designated as Committee B-1 on Copper Wire. The committee consisted of eleven members; representatives of five manufacturers of -copper wire, of four manufacturers of electrical apparatus, and of two firms of consulting and contracting engineers. The members of the committee were designated by the officials of the companies to act as their representatives in the committee.

A STUDY of subsidence and ground movement in the copper and iron mines of the upper peninsula of Michigan has been made by W. R. Crane of the United States Bureau of Mines and published as Bulletin 295 of 66 pages and 49 illustrations. As a result of subsidence, the country adjacent to the mines and over- lying the mine workings in this district is often broken to such an extent as to affect its value; mine shafts and development openings are occasionally so damaged as to be rendered useless, and water can enter the workings through fractures and cave-ins. The problem is more serious in the iron-mining districts, where villages and towns not owned by the operating companies have grown up around mining operations.

T HE production of pure iron by electrolyzing solutions of its salts has been the object of scientific curiosity and research for about 80 years; and in the last two decades a realization of the unusual physical and chemical qualities of electrolytic iron has turned the attention of chemists and metallurgists toward a commercial application of this accumulated knowledge. Thus Burgess and Hambuechen in America, . Cowper-Coles in England, and Fischer in Germany- devised methods, more or less successful, for the electrolytic refining of iron, but none of these processes has yet attained large-scale operation. During the war some interesting ,work was done in France and England on building up worn or defective machine parts by electrodeposition of iron. It remained for the Société "Le Fern in France to carry on the process commercially. For six years Les Fonderies et Forges. de Sainte-Maire et Gravigny and the works of Bouchayer & Viallet at Grenoble have manufactured pure-iron boiler tubes in competition with established practice. The French process originated in the researches of Anthelme Boucher in 1910, and was, not put into operation until several years of experimentation had passed.

RECORDS in mining operations naturally fall when improved equipment and methods are developed. And tunneling through the Continental Divide is a mining operation, even though the tunnel was not driven to strike a vein at depth. Although many engineering feats have been successfully accomplished in the development of water supplies in the Western States, the Twin Lakes Tunnel in Colorado presents some unusual features that make it noteworthy. To begin with, it is the first trans-mountain water diversion project in the West. The fact that the Continental Divide intervenes between where the water is and where it is needed was brushed, aside as of minor importance. It was enough to know that on the western side of Independence Pass, the highest in Colorado, with an elevation of 12,095 ft., there was water which was needed on the eastern side, where the Twin Lakes are situated, forming the

AT the request of the Council of the Institute, I have the honor to submit the following remarks upon the Program of Tests under which the current work of the Watertown Arsenal Testing Laboratory is carried on, which comprises, among other items, the tests of steel ingot metal and derivative shapes. The intended scope of the tests may be illustrated by extracts from the descriptive part of the program as submitted by the Laboratory under date of April 17, 1907, and subsequently approved by the Chief of Ordnance, U. S. A. Under Item 1, Ingot Metal-Open hearth, acid and basic; Bessemer, acid and basic; crucible; fluid compressed and uncompressed-descriptive remarks were made as follows ; " A thorough, fundamental inquiry into the physical properties of steel necessarily begins with the ingot metal. Investigations, having for their object the improvement of steels, should also begin with the ingot. A knowledge of the ingot structure is essential for judging of the subsequent behavior or appearance of the metal. Under ordinary conditions, so little information is obtained from the ingot in individual cases that practically none of importance is acquired. These remarks have particular reference to the state of physical and structural soundness of the steel. Questions of chemical composition, segregation, piping and the grosser cavities have frequently been given attention. Defects of continuity of structure, which manifest themselves in the working; of the metal, and at the final stages cause distrust in the finished forging, have generally been neglected. ? Banana fibers are among the lignocellulosic with great potential for use in polymer composites, such as the variety from the Musaceae family, due to its low density and good mechanical properties. In this work, epoxy matrix composites incorporated with continuous and aligned banana fibers were tested for their flexural behavior. Specimens with up to 30% in volume of fibers were bend-tested until rupture. The results showed an increase in both the composite mechanical strength and the stiffness with incorporation of these fibers. A fractographic analysis by SEM examinations a moderate adhesion mechanism between the banana fiber and the epoxy matrix. This mechanism is apparently responsible for the improved performance of the composites.

Continuous countercurrent decantation calculations have always been a headache to the cyanide man (and the chemical engineer) because of the simultaneous equations involved. These are tedious to solve, and there is considerable opportunity for mathematical error. This paper presents a shortcut method for making these calculations, which has been in successful use for twenty years by the author, and which is particularly valuable in selecting the best of several possible flowsheets, or evaluating the effect of various assumptions.

J. T. Pullon, Rowangarth, Roundhay, Leeds, England :— In discussing Mr. Lee's paper, I wish to call attention to the fact that Mr. B. II. Thwaite (who was heard here yesterday on the subject of the application of blast-furnace gas for the production of power, of which he was undoubtedly the pioneer) read, at the Engineering Congress in Glasgow in 1901, a paper on the profitable utilization of power from blast-furnace gases,' in which he suggested the diversion and cleaning of the whole of the waste gases coming from the blast-furnace and their utilization for power-production, so as to obtain, with proper manipulation, from 4 to 6 times the efficiency of present methods. He suggested also the heating of the stoves with producer-gas of a higher and therefore more suitable calorific value, so as to maintain them in a constant state of maximum efficiency, free from dust, and to avoid the irregular working of the furnace, besides obtaining a maximum supply of air-blast, of 15 or even 20 lb. pressure, by means of internal-conibustion blast-engines driven by the cleaned waste furnace-gases, with a surplus of gas left for other uses. Since that time, in view of the necessity of having a stand-by plant, immediately available, in case of strikes or other reasons causing the banking or blowing-out of the blast-furnace, he has developed, as an addition to his other types of producer, a high blast-pressure gas-generator, producing a gas identical with, or somewhat superior to, blast-furnace gas; and in which all the ash of the fuel is turned into fluid slag, which is available for, the production of slagwool. The gas is a little richer in carbon monoxide than average blast-furnace waste gas, and has only from 1 to 3 per cent. of hydrogen. MARCH 15-Industry is rapidly snapping back from another coal crisis, other business news is in general favorable and the outlook through the Spring is by most observers considered quite promising. Most industries report comfortable backlogs of unfilled orders, department store sales in recent weeks have equalled in dollars those of the corresponding period last year, retail sales of automobiles show again over the same period a year ago, and new orders for machine tools are at the highest figures since August 1946. Orders for railway freight cars have shown a very encouraging pickup, with a total of 9385 cars in January and the N. Y. Central alone ordering 4500 in February. Construction continues very active. In January new housing starts totaled 80,000 against 50,000 a year ago and the daily average contract awards, according to the Dodge reports, were 57 pct larger. In the first 22 days of February the increase in awards was 27 pct. Lumber orders since Jan. 1 have run 22 pct above last year. All of these favorable factors bolster the opinion that the upturn in industrial output and employment which began last summer has not yet spent itself and that the setback caused by the strikes will be made up when people get back to work. Only in a few lines are there indications that primary production may be outrunning the consumption of finished goods, although inventory build-up would seem to be rather modest as the National Association of Purchasing Agents reported in February that 78 pct of its members were buying for 60 days or less. Industrial prices as a whole show no significant trend despite the continued alarm over both the immediate and the long-term possibility of inflation caused primarily by the government's increasing expenditure and its inability to balance the budget. A recent advance of 1.9 pct in primary market prices is viewed by some people as the surface symptom of renewed inflation, but even so it is more than two years since the alltime high was reached by the daily index of sensitive commodities in November 1947. Over two years have passed since prices received by farmers hit their peak and about a year and a half since all wholesale prices and the consumer price index touched their highest points in August 1948. The decline in the wholesale price index has been almost continuous, interrupted only twice by slight advances in the monthly figures from February to March 1949, and, later in the year, from August to September. Of course, this continued decline in the last half of 1949 largely reflects a downward movement in farm and food prices. Wholesale prices for commodities other than farm and food leveled out after June and now stand only slightly under the June level. Farm products are down by 22 pct from January and by 18.6 pct from August 1948. Food prices are down only slightly less. Consequently, the farm price support program is in serious trouble and has imposed a heavy financial burden on the Treasury. In those commodities other than farm products only building materials, chemicals and textiles have come down as much as the average, while housefurnishings and metals and their products have fallen hardly at all. Glancing away from the domestic front, the results of the British general election indicated a highly inconvenient situation, that public opinion there is so exactly deadlocked as to divest the victors of much ability to make forceful decisions or create significant policy. It is generally considered that another election in the near future would give substantially the same result. The British people are equally divided and the politicians are not likely to precipitate another appeal to the country until there is manifest reason to believe that external and internal circumstances have changed sufficiently to permit one party or the other to obtain a decisive verdict. Because of the lack of a clear mandate steel nationalization will likely lag in Britain. In the meantime there is considerable discussion going on as to whether the European steel industries as a whole are at a disadvantage in world competition with the American industry. An article in the "Statistical Bulletin" for January of the British Iron and Steel Federation takes issue on this point with the authors of the Geneva report, observing that they wrote before devaluation, and this particular conclusion "has been overtaken by events." The "Bulletin" also contends that the statement was in any case incorrect so far as Britain was concerned, and that it was based on scanty and insufficient evidence. To support the rebuttal a detailed and extensive comparison is made of the home prices of certain steel products in Britain and in other countries of the world. The accompanying table gives a selection of the prices published. It sets out the changed position since devaluation and since the recent increases in American steel prices. These are home market prices; no doubt in competitive export business some of the price levels could be brought closer together at need.

T. M. Drown, South Bethlehem, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper shows in a striking way the high degree of rapidity and ac curacy exhibited by the chemists of our steel-works in ordinary everyday practice. That determinations made in an hour should present only slight differences in the third place of deci male is certainly matter for surprise and congratulation. This remarkable result has been due, perhaps, in part, to a remark able cause. The managers of works, ignorant of all the diffi culties of the laboratory, have demanded "the impossible " of their chemists—and the chemists have done it! Andrew A. Blair, Philadelphia, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper is extremely interesting, especially in its bearing on the question of a standard method for the rapid determination of phosphorus in the laboratories of steel-works. Before discussing the re sults in general, I desire to explain the results obtained by me under method A'. This is the method which I have used in the work of the sub-committee on Methods of the Interna tional Steel Standards Committee. It may be described briefly as follows: Solution in nitric acid; oxidation of carbonaceous matter by permanganate; precipitation of phosphoric acid by molybdate solution; reduction of molybdic acid in the reductor, and titra tion by permanganate. This method was used apparently by only three chemists, Dr. Dudley, Mr. Crowell, and myself. In determining phosphorus by this method, among the most essential points to be considered are the ratio of iron to molyb dic acid, or the reducing action of zinc on molybdic acid as compared to its reducing action on iron, and the ratio of molyb dic acid to phosphorus in the ammonium phospho-molybdate obtained by precipitation from the solution of the steel. In regard to the first point, the usually accepted ratio is 1 to 0.90756, or, as it is roughly stated, 0.9076, which is based on the assumed reduction of the molybdic acid to Mo12019,. This
