THE American oil 'industry has reached the critical stage where the demand exceeds the supply with no hope of permanently bettering the situation through the development of new fields in the United States. Remedies may be sought along three lines: 1. Securing a foreign source of supply. 2. Curtailment of the use of oil and its derivatives. 3. Improvement in methods of recovery (including the recovery of shale oil), refining, and utilization. The oil companies with proper government support will push the acquiring of foreign territory; the price of oil and oil products will enforce a curtailment in use; it remains for the producers and refiners to brings about improvements and economy in recovery, transportation and refining; the general public must be instructed in utilization. The solution of the problem, therefore, rests largely in the hands of the technologists of the industry -the drillers, engineers, geologists, chemists, etc. Only through an exchange of the ideas of the individuals who are conducting the industry will its technology be advanced. , Among the agencies at work to bring about this result are the United States Bureau of Mines, the American Petroleum Institute, and the A. I. M. E. The Bureau of Mines has a trained staff of experts, maintains experiment stations and a field force of technologists, and issues many technical papers helpful to the industry. The Petroleum Institute is a clearing house for useful statistics and is now. organizing a research division under the able direction of Doctor Manning, but its principal field of activities is in the realm of co¬ordinating ?the financial and commercial activities of the` oil' companies.' It remains for the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to organize the individual technologists of the industry and provide them with means of exchanging and disseminating ideas through meetings and publications. It is the aim of the Petroleum Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to foster this exchange of ideas among oil men by enlarging the membership of the Institute among the field and office technical forces of the oil companies and thus arouse their interest in the vital problems of the oil business.

" Oil shale contains little or no oil as such , but it contains an organic material from which oil may be produced by destructive distillation" . This statement , or others conveying the same meaning, appears in many popular and techni cal articles on oil shale . It is based on the belief that the ordinary solvents of petroleum have but little action on the organic substances contained in oil- yielding shales , although on distillation these same shales may yield upwards of 50 gallons of crude shale oil per ton . A 50 - gallon shale thus yields by distillation 18.73 per cent of its weight as oil ( assuming the specific gravity of the oil to be 0.900 ) , although only a relatively small part of this can be recovered by extraction with such solvents as chloroform , carbon tetrachloride , and the like . In the course of certain experiments designed to determine the solubilities of different shales after they had begun to yield oil by distillation , it was found desirable to determine the quantity dissolved from certain unheated shales by various solvents , at or near the boiling points of these solvents . The method used and results obtained are presented below. These experiments were made in connection with the oil - shale investigations being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the States of Colorado and Utah .

Exploration for high-value massive sulfide deposits on the ocean floor typically commences with a search for chimney fields in appropriate geological settings, followed by collection and assaying of standing chimneys. Individual chimney fields are generally too small in aggregate volume to constitute viable resources in their own right. Unless numerous small fields occur in reasonably close proximity, presence of plentiful sub-seafloor mineralization with acceptable metal tenor is the more likely requirement for potential exploitation. Expensive drilling is required to prove up mounds of collapsed chimneys, or dilatory sheets and veins or replacements of massive/semimassive sulfide (?stockworks? or ?manto?-like bodies) in underlying host rock. Where multiple targets have been defined, as many parameters as possible are desirable to help rank them for drilling.

During the testing of porcelain insulators with a " 60 - cycle flash - over apparatus " , gases are liberated having an odor greatly resembling that of ozone . Since the two main constituents of normal air are nitrogen and oxygen , and high voltages (approximately 90,000 volts ) are used during the tests , the conditions are favorable for the production of ozone or oxides of nitrogen , and perhaps both simultaneously . The presence of these gases is only noticeable during the testing period . They soon disappear after the test is over . No fatalities have ever resulted from these gases at the plant visited nor are there any records of any of the men who worked on the tests being confined to their homes from this cause . New employees sometimes complain of a depressed feeling and shortness of breath , which is most noticeable after leaving work and getting into fresh air , but they som become accustomed to it and no ill effects are noticed . In view of previous work*** which the Bureau of Mines has done on oxides of nitrogen in connection with mine gases and problems in gas analysis , tests were made at the plant of the Westinghouse High Voltage Insulator Company at Derry , Pa . to determine the kind and amount of gases liberated .

The level of automation employed in flotation production is relatively low. In an actual concentrator, operators use their judgment to adjust the production state based on the visual characteristics of the flotation froth surface. There are shortcomings, such as strong subjectivity and lagging process operation, that easily cause the waste of manpower and material resources. Machine vision technology is introduced to replace human visualization, achieving a quantitative description of the visual characteristics of the froth surface. The state variable parameters are provided for the identification of the flotation conditions.

As the demand for most industrial minerals on the world market continues to climb, educational institutions maintain traditional policy in emphasizing chiefly metallic ore deposits and energy resources in addition to the general disciplines. In spite of their increasing importance, few universities exhibit great depth with respect to industrial minerals courses due to the shortage of specialized faculty in a category this broad. As new ideas are formulated and technological advances are developed in the field of industrial minerals, the classroom still exists as a student's primary source of information. This opportunity to give today's students the benefit of modern developements has not been utilized to its utmost potential.

There is an increasing challenge of waste management regarding the growth of photovoltaic (PV) technology. Often overlooked by its environmental benefits of greenhouse gas emission reduction, PV technology contain metals that are highly hazardous for the environment. Amorphous silicon (a-Si) PV modules employ indium-tin-oxide as transparent conductive oxide and given the high price of indium its recovery could be advantageous from an economic perspective as well. Leaching of indium was predicted by comparing the Pourbaix diagram with the values of oxidoreduction potential and pH measured on a phosphoric acid solution. The a-Si panel was subjected to thermal treatment to remove the proprietary, protective coating and allow leaching to occur. Then, indium could be leached by phosphoric acid in a jacketed reactor, reaching a concentration of 55 ppm (67% leaching rate) with a 0.2 g/mL of a-Si panel to aqueous solution ratio. The leaching of indium with phosphoric acid is novel and could open doors for many other recycling routes for solar panels.

Drilling operations are a vital component of surface mining, directly influencing productivity, safety, and cost efficiency. This paper explores a multi-faceted approach to drill optimization, focusing on minimizing delays, and enhancing operational effectiveness. Key areas of inefficiency such as shift changes, fuel and water delays, and time lost between drilling holes are analyzed to identify actionable improvements. Equipment related factors, including the frequency of drill bit and drill steel changes, as well as the condition of deck bushings, are evaluated for their impact on downtime and performance consistency. Additionally, the integration of smooth drives and shock subs is examined for their role in reducing vibration related wear and improving drilling precision. Optimization of pattern approach strategies is highlighted as a means to reduce non-productive movement and align drilling with blast design more effectively. To support continuous improvement and accountability, the implementation of a driller scorecard is proposed. This tool enables the measurement of individual performance based on key operational metrics, fostering a culture of data driven management. Through a combination of field data analysis and best practice recommendations, this study provides a comprehensive framework for enhancing drilling productivity in mining operations. The findings aim to support mine operators in achieving higher efficiency, reducing operational costs, and extending equipment life through targeted optimization strategies.

Natural fibers presents interfacial characteristics with polymeric matrices that favor a high impact energy absorption by the composite structure. The objective of this work was then to assess the charpy impact resistance of polymeric composites reinforced with one or two layers of batt jute and malva fibers. The results showed a remarkable increase in the notch toughness with increasing layers of jute blankets and malva. This can be attributed to a preferential debonding of the fiber/matrix interface, which contributes to an elevated absorbed energy.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. It encompasses every facet of terrestrial mining but with the unique addition of a superimposed liquid overburden, which is itself mineralized. It is the unique aspects of marine mining that are discussed in this section. In keeping with the times, a systems approach is taken in the presentation of the material. The environment is first described, and this is followed in logical sequence by the common requirements for working there, then the mineral exploration phase, the exploitation and, finally, the operational restraints imposed by man and nature. Free use is made of tables and figures from original and published works and extensive listings of reference material round out each section. The title "Marine Mining" was chosen in preference to ocean or underwater mining because it is broad enough to include oceans, beaches and inland seas. The selection of terms sometimes may seem odd but they have not been chosen arbitrarily. All things are reduced, where possible, to basics and defined. Applying systems terminology, the word "platforms" is used in the functional sense and includes not only airborne, waterborne and fixed platforms, but man himself in his capacity as a working diver. If there is confusion it is often because of familiarity with a word in a context personal to the reader. For example, what does extraction mean to you-or mining or exploitation? Cost data have been interspersed throughout the section whenever they could be obtained. The use of these data should be tempered with understanding because no two situations are alike and improvements in marine technology are constantly being made. The names of individual authors are listed with each subsection. Where no name is given, the responsibility has been that of the senior author. Acknowledgment is sincerely made to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and latterly the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for encouraging and supporting the preparation of the work ; to the secretarial staff at the Marine Minerals Technology Center and to Donald Eisman for editing. To the many other contributors who may not be listed by name, grateful acknowledgment is also due. It is hoped that the chapter will be useful to the practicing mining engineer who suddenly is assigned to marine work or to the experienced marine engineer who is equally suddenly assigned to mining work. It is not possible to put "everything-you -need-to¬-know" into one section, but. the very full bibliographies at the end of the text should adequately fill in for those who wish to know more. 20.1-THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT Marine mining is set apart as a separate discipline by the marine environment. The following subsections describe the environment from the point of view of the physicist, the chemist and the geologist. The interrelationship of these disciplines with the economic mineral potential of the oceans and seas is apparent from the description of the marine mineral resources. The marine environment is an extremely complex natural phenomenon with which the marine mining engineer must learn to live. It can be the source of his wealth or his frustrations and sometimes both. It can never be ignored.

THE support of roof in mines is dependent largely on the character of the top rock and its occurrence. The formations overlying the orebed in the Birmingham district are sandstone and slate. The sandstone occurs in beds of sufficient thickness to constitute important elements in the system of support; the slate is relatively strong but is thinly stratified. The alternating beds of sandstone and slate furnish an excellent combination in that the former are strong and the latter are impervious; however, their continuity is broken by jointing or slip planes. The thickness, and consequent weight of the overlying formations, is important in so far as the size and arrangement of pillars are concerned but may be relatively unimportant, temporarily at least, as a factor in the support of the roof. The position of the respective beds of sandstone and slate, their relative thickness, and their inherent weakness because of the occurrence of faults and folds, may exert a predominating influence on their support in place, which is affected only in part by the weight of the cover. The only mine in this district that operates under a cover of approximately 2000 ft. (1900 ft.) is the Shannon so-called "twin slope," situated 14,000 ft. southeast of the portal of the No. 7 mine of the Tennessee Coal, Iron, & Railroad Co. The conditions in this mine indicate what may be expected in other mines when the same depth is attained; in fact the effect of pressure is shown in several mines that have not reached two-thirds of that depth. It is evident then that conditions affecting the support of roof will not improve but rather will become more difficult with the extension of the mines into the valley under a constantly increasing weight of cover. Further, the difficulties will probably be augmented by the occurrence of faults and other disturbed ground, the presence and position of which at present are largely unknown.

"SUMMARYMagnetic and gravimetric surveys wore conducted over an area of ap¬proximately 1,400 square miles in the bauxite district of central Arkansas. The primary purpose of these surveys was to discover any possible buried and hitherto unknown syenite masses favorable for the occurrence of bauxite and to determine the approximate position of the buried flanks of the known syenite masses which might offer conditions favorable for the discovery of new ore bodies.Those surveys indicated that the various syenite outcrops were domes or bosses on a large batholith and that ether similar domes occurred on the batholith but did net outcrop.Drilling on the local geophysical anomalies proved the presence of 10 buried domes, but only 2 of them were found to project above the upper surface of the Midway clays, a requisite of conditions favorable for the occurrence of bauxite ore bodies. The geophysical data indicated the approximate configuration of the buried flanks of the known syenite coutcrops, and the portions of these flanks that project above the Midway have now been outlined more accurately by drilling.The geophysical surveys have produced evidence permitting the elimi¬nation of a large area as unfavorable for the occurrence of bauxite.Magnetic surveys extending along the Midway-Wilcox contact from Gurdon, in Clark County, on the southwest to Searcy, in White County, on the northwest have proved the improbability of the existence of other syenite masses similar to those found in Pulaski and Saline Counties. A detailed magnetic survey of the Magnet Cove area in Hot Spring County has proved that the syenite mass exposed in that locality is an isolated intrusion and entirely unrelated to those of Pulaski and Saline Counties. This syenite mass does not occur under conditions believed to be favorable for the occurrence of bauxite."

The methods of reinforcement to be discussed in this paper are all insitu methods, ones that can be used on the soil structure as it exists in the ground, and do not rely on excavation and replacement of the soil. Current practice in the United States, as well as new ideas and methods, will be discussed as they relate to slope stability, retaining walls, and to other uses such as control of mine or cavity related subsidence and to liquefaction control under existing structures. The method is based on the concept of "nailing" or reinforcing the soil in place, and thereby causing a mass of soil to act as a coherent unit. When performed properly, a true gravity structure can be constructed, one that will remain intact under both horizontal and vertical loadings and that will also resist vibrational and seismic loadings.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 27,034-hectare Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area and the 16,544-hectare Breadwinner study area. There were approximately 535 lode and placer claims in or partially in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area, and 84 lode and placer claims in or partially in the Breadwinner study area. In the Atlanta and Rocky Bar mining districts, both adjacent to and in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area, 30,232.4 kg (972,000 02) of gold and 62,838.3 kg (2,020,000 02) of silver had been produced. Most of this production came from outside the study area. Placer properties adjacent to (and a few in) the Breadwinner study area had production of 93.1 kg (2,992 oz) of gold and 20.0 kg (642 02) of silver. Twelve properties in the Steel Mountain/Yuba River study area have potential for resources; eleven have alteration and/or mineralization similar to that found at Atlanta with potential for gold, silver, and tungsten resources, and one has alteration and mineralization associated with polymetallic vein type deposits with potential for gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and tungsten resources. Adjacent to the study area, large bars of gold-bearing gravel can be found along the Middle Fork Boise River. Four properties in the Breadwinner study area have potential for mineral resources; one has alteration and mineralization associated with skarn, polymetallic vein, and, possibly, copper-molybdenum and molybdenum porphyry types of deposits; two have alteration and metal assays associated with polymetallic vein, and possibly copper-molybdenum and molybdenum porphyry types of deposits; and one has alteration and mineralization similar to that found at Atlanta. These four have potential for gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, and tungsten resources Adjacent to and extending into the Breadwinner study area are large bars of gold-bearing gravel along North and Middle Forks Boise River.

This circular is part 3 of the third paper (entitled "Excavation") of a series summarizing the technical problem; involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes. Fart 2 discussed the use of power scrapers, slackline cableway excavators, and hydraulic monitors. This circular discusses the use of the hydraulic, clamshell, ladder, and dipper dredge. Part 4 to follow will discus the use of haulage equipment, and subsequent parts will discuss the application of both excavating and haulage equipment to various types of deposits. HYDRAULIC DREDGE Judged by the number of installations and the tonnage produced, as recorded in part 1 of this circular, the hydraulic or pump dredge is the most popular type of underwater sand and gravel excavator.

"INTRODUCTION This report embodies the results of a detailed statistical microscopic examination of the ore and the mill products of the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., Park City, Utah.The study was conducted under the joint auspices of the United States Bureau of mines is cooperation with the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, Utah. The work was done in the cooperative Microscopic Service Laboratory, which was equipped by contributions from the following companies: Utah Copper Co., International Smelting & Refining Co., American Smelting & Refining Co., United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co., Tintic Standard Mining Co., Silver King Coalition Mines Co., and Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co. The salaries and the other costs involved in operation of the laboratory were met by contributions from certain supporting companies. In addition to the regular personnel of the laboratory the Bureau of Mines contributed the part-time services of a microscopist-consultant to direct and assist with the technical work.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThe authors acknowledge the courtesies extended by the Silver King Coalition Mines Co., through its general manager, M. Organized efforts toward the prevention of injuries and occupational diseases have been of comparatively recent origin in the mining industry, dating generally from the beginning of this century. Mining-and particularly underground mining- is more hazardous in many respects than most other major industries, and continual and increasing attention has been given to its health and safety aspects. The importance of the physical well-being of those engaged in mining was recognized by Agricola, who, after describing the hazards encountered in 16th century mining operations, stated that "Some of these evils, as well as certain other things, are the reason why pits are occasionally abandoned." In the past 50 yr particularly, mine managements and labor organizations, separately or collectively, have mounted productive efforts toward the prevention of accidents and industry-associated diseases and illnesses. A statistical study of this period indicates that increasing awareness coupled with the endeavors of all concerned agencies has resulted in decreasing frequency of occurrences of injuries and illnesses. In recent years particularly the mining industry has used the services of safety engineers, industrial hygienists, inspectors, ventilation engineers and other specializing in locating and correcting deficiencies affecting the welfare of employees. Concurrently, the labor movement has incorporated into its organization individuals working in the fields of health and safety, many devoting full time to these responsibilities. Others serve in behalf of their fellow workmen as on-the-job safety representatives. Most authorities agree that accidents are caused by (1) unsafe acts, (2) unsafe conditions and, exceptionally, (3) Acts of God. The "unsafe act" often is cited as the prime cause. but many accidents, and attendant injuries, are the result of a blend of "unsafe acts" and "unsafe conditions," with each chargeable in varying proportions. It therefore is necessary to consider both the physical elements of the mine plant and the training, mental attributes and actions of all personnel involved. Analysis of an accident, if based on hasty reconnaissance and unduly hurried questioning, seldom will disclose more than surface causes and consequently will result in inadequate measures to prevent repetition. Mining involves unavoidable and calculated risks, as in all facets of life. It is most important then that men employed in mining be schooled in the hazards and develop fully the ability to evaluate and minimize risks. The environment, of underground mining often is harsh and strange compared to the more natural surface conditions man has learned to cope with as a part of established life patterns. The miner. therefore, must adapt to unusual situations and conditions and must develop a mental attitude permitting acceptance of change. 3.1-INDUSTRY-AFFILIATED SAFETY AGENCIES L. S.
