Polysaccharides have been used as depressants for naturally hydrophobic talc in the flotation of base metal sulfide ores, precious metal sulfide ores and platinum group metal (PGM) sulfide ores. The results of this surface chemistry study confirm guar gum as a preferred polysaccharide for talc depression in the flotation of these ores. In addition to the practical application of the research results, the surface chemistry results are of academic significance, providing further information to understand how polysaccharide depressants function in these complex sulfide flotation systems.

All of them can, under some circumstances, be made to explode by fire. Some of them can be caused to undergo a detonating explosion by setting off a detonator in contact with them. In blasting use is made of both these means for setting off explosives, the means used being determined by circumstances.

Much research effort has been spent in attempting to reduce the high energy costs in grinding, but relatively little in developing methods to enhance the liberation of the minerals from each other. This paper presents some ideas on the nature and role of grain boundaries in mineral assemblies, and their influence on the propagation of cracks through the rock. It is argued that if the mechanisms of fracture are more clearly understood, crack propagation may be controlled in such a way that intergranular fracture dominates breakage, producing less fines and a higher degree of liberation.

This report will differ slightly from the traditional scientific and technical discussions given at this type of conference. It will focus on the personal experiences and choices that I undertook when deciding on my graduate position and location after completing university studies. Throughout the duration of my course I had experience in both fly-in, fly-out operations in the Pilbara and residential operations in the West Australian Goldfields. These experiences, though limited, allowed me to explore the two different methods and their pros and cons, and consequently to make my choice for graduate employment. Throughout the duration of my degree I believed it was important to gain a basic understanding of the two methods, focusing on lifestyle and personal interactions. The decision that a residential site suited my personality and lifestyle then allowed me to refine my job applications to a more specific list of mine sites and companies, resulting in a residential position with BHP Billiton at their Iron Ore operations in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

To be competitive in automotive applications, polymer composites must be processable by high production rate processes like injection molding (IM), reaction injection molding (RIM), structural rim (SRIM) and compression molding. With current fiber reinforced composite materials, performance properties are sometimes compromised to make them compatible with these processes. This is done by decreasing the amount and length of the reinforcing fiber and the viscosity and molecular weight of the polymer matrix. Sheet molding composite (SMC) and thermoplastic polymer blends are examples of polymer composites which are cost effective in many applications and meet the high speed processing requirements for automotive parts.

It is a great honour and privilege to be here in this distinguished company of the outstanding men in the mining industry and the political life of Canada. I fully recognize that I am so honoured as a symbol of the combination of American and Canadian leaders in industry who are partners in the sponsor-ship of the Quebec-Labrador iron-ore mining development which we are undertaking, and as such I want to express our great appreciation of the co-operation and assistance we have met on every hand in Canada, and the genuine friendliness and never-failing courtesy which we are always accorded. We are quite aware that it springs primarily from the very high regard in which our partner and sponsor, Jules Timmins, and our other Canadian associates are held. Their high standing among you is well known and we quite naturally fall heir to the benefits of the great esteem in which you hold them. Jules Timmins and his long-time associate, John Knox, were the original inspiration for our participation in this venture. It was their enthusiasm and vision which caught our interest and led to our joining with them in the years of exploration and search which have brought us to the threshold of this great development where we stand today. So much has been written of the details of our exploration and plans for future development that it would bore you for me to review them further here, but there is a phase of this development, and an extremely important phase of it, which I think has passed almost unnoticed and which it may be well worth while for me to bring to your attention this evening.

"Annual world zinc consumption is as high as nearly 14 millions of tonnes. Approximately 50% share of zinc is used for corrosion protection in processes of continuous galvanization and the hot dip processes. In the latter, two zinc containing residues are produced: zinc ash and hard zinc, which constitute around 10% each. Paper concerns the method of possible separation of metallic zinc from the non-metallic zinc compounds from the zinc ashes – the waste product of hot dip galvanization process. The investigative programme covered the comminution tests of the feed (zinc ash) in selected crushers: jaw crusher, roller crusher and impactor. Results of investigations show that application of individual crushing device results in various breakage of the feed sample. Impact force caused the highest increase in finest particles size fractions of the product, while metallic and non-metallic fractions were comminuted differently. The compression force, in turn, caused the selective comminution, i.e. the breakage of metallic zinc was observed in a higher degree. The presented approach appears to be an economical supplementary method of initial recovery of metallic zinc from metallurgical zinc waste. For the high demands for the zinc in the world and the need of corrosion protection, the method presented in the paper helps in more effective zinc recovery and environmental protection.INTRODUCTION AND METHODOLOGY World production of metallic zinc during last decade shows a slight increase and in recent years its consumptions reach 14 millions of tonnes. Figure 1 shows world production of zinc in the time period 2009 – 2016. Main directions of zinc utilization include: - Galvanization - Production of zinc alloys - Brass and bronze production - Semi-manufactures of zinc - Chemicals The major share in global zinc consumption constitute galvanization process (Bright 2007). Two main types of zinc galvanization are: hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) and electro-galvanizing."

The majority of individuals involved in the mining industry can appreciate and under-stand that mining is an activity that is necessary to satisfy the very basic needs of society, and to assist in accommodating our ever-changing world. As the expression goes, ?if it can?t be grown, it has to be mined.? And at this point in time, society has granted the mining industry the right to go about the business of mining, with the general anticipation that the work will be carried out without causing undue harm to the environment or populations in and around the mining operation. The term ?sustainable development? is gaining momentum as a popular concept, and indeed it has become something of a catch-all phrase, but it is important that the idea behind the term is not cast aside as a nonsense buzz word, as it simply is an indication that development (e.g. mining) can be satisfactorily carried out with an eye toward stewardship of the environment and society. On Feb. 19, 2010, a round-table discussion (Roundtable 2010) on ?Strides Toward Sustainability in Mining? was hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. (Knight Piésold) at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV. Knight Piésold had local representatives (Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce), as well as representatives from other office locations (Cynthia Parnow and Rick Damiani from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from Tucson, AZ) to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to 30 attendees from five states. Attendees included personnel from nine mining properties and various corporate offices. The majority of participants were people who are directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Others were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus.

"In recent years efficient safety organizations have been considered essential at all well-managed metal mines. Statistics from numerous mines throughout the country show that the expense of operation of these safety departments is repaid many times by the saving due to fewer accidents. Men trained in first aid, mine rescue and fire-fighting are important parts of the safety organization at most mines. It is more desirable, however, to lay stress ma accident prevention and fire precautions rather than on first aid and fire fighting. Both of these phases of safety work have been well developed in the Globe Miami district. The co-operative mine rescue organization* in this district under Orr Woodburn, is one of the best in the country. Mine rescue teams are kept trained at all the mines and the oxygen breathing apparatus is constantly maintained in good condition. Miners are also trained in first aid, and are offered incentives to make themselves proficient both in mine rescue and first-aid work.The Old Dominion Company is among the leaders in the safety movement in the Globe-Miami district. The safety department at this mine was established January 1, 1914, and has been developed to a high degree of efficiency. W. G. McBride, general manager of the company, takes an active part in the safety work and has given Albert Talon the safety inspector, his active support in developing the organization. The success of the department is dos largely to the ability, tact, and personality of the men directing the work.The following description of the establishment and operation of the safety organization at this mine was prepared from information supplied by Mr. Tallon."

"The influence of superheat on the solidification structure and ferrite/austenite phase transformation of a novel lean duplex stainless steel (DSS) was investigated on a setup, which designed to thermally simulate the continuous casting process. The results showed that the macrostructure of the samples all exhibited chill zone, columnar zone and equiaxed zone. The distance from chill zone to position of columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) moved from 51.0 mm to 39.8 mm with an decrease of superheat from 70 °C to 10 °C, and that the grains in the chill zone tended to be finer. In equiaxed zone, the fme and uniform grains were observed when superheat higher than 40 °C; while, coarse grains were found in samples poured at low superheat. Generally, the volume fraction of ferrite increased along the dendritic growth direction, and stabilized in equiaxed zone. The high superheat decreased the volume fraction of ferrite in equiaxed zone, while it had indistinctive influence on chill zone and columnar zone.IntroductionDuplex stainless steel with approximately equal volume of ferrite and austenite, offering an attractive combination of corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. [ l]. The production of DSS, worldwide application in structural engineering[2] and petrochemical industry[3], have increase by more than 100% in the latest decade[4]. But due to the sharp prices increase of nickel and chromium, lean duplex stainless steels which have lower contents of alloy elements were developed. They perform well in both mechanical and corrosion resistance[S, 6] and even have TRlP(Transformation Induced Plasticity) effect[?]. Nonetheless , the mechanical properties of DSS was affected greatly by the solidification structure, such as columnar to equiaxed transition (CET), grain size and phase content[8]. So, the solidification behavior of stainless steel was investigated widely"

This publication presents the main experimental and theoretical results on the recovery of aluminum scrap (dross and Used Beverage Can) without use of any addition of fluxing salts. Dross and UBC's processing experiments have been conducted in a rotary plasma furnace operating in the transferred and non-transferred mode, using different plasma gases. The investigation involved the treatment of more than 100 kg of dross and other aluminum residues using plasma torches with less than 100 kW power. The experimental work showed that this process is .far more economical and kind to the environment than the conventional route using a salt flux. An equilibrium thermodynamic calculation at elevated temperature makes possible the prediction of by-products at various temperatures for different plasma gases.

The Fort Cady in situ borate mining project involves recovery of boron from a mineral deposit located over 1400 feet below the surface. The resource recovery method is being developed using in situ mining technology employing weak acid solution injected directly into the ore body. As the acid contacts the calcium based ore (primarily natural colemanite), the contained borate values are digested as boric acid. This boric acid solution is then pumped to the surface by use of submersible pumps. At the surface the borate values are recovered as a finely divided solid white powder after a series of chemical reactions and precipitations resulting in the production of calcium borate. The refined product is then sold under the trade name CADYCAL 100.TM All environmental permits for up to a production rate of 90,000 tons per year have now been obtained. These permits required an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for federal lands and an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the private portion of the property. Regulatory permitting took over 5 years to obtain all authorizations for this operation. The ore body has an average thickness of 118 feet extending over 273 acres. At a production rate of 90,000 tons per year with only a 70 percent resource recovery allowance, in place reserves are sufficient to sustain production for over one hundred years.

"The Solid-Oxide Oxygen-Ion-Conducting Membrane (SOM) electrolysis process has been successfully tested on a laboratory scale, producing silicon directly from silica in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way. A yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) tube, closed at one end was employed to separate the molten salt containing dissolved silica from a liquid metal anode placed inside the YSZ tube. When the applied electric potential between the liquid tin cathode in the molten salt and the anode exceeds the dissociation potential of silica, oxygen ions are pumped out of the molten salt through the YSZ membrane and oxidized at the anode while the silicon cations in the flux are reduced to silicon at the liquid tin cathode. The presence of high-purity silicon crystals on the surface of liquid tin cathode was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Silicon crystals were extracted from tin cathode by chemical etching.IntroductionPhotovoltaics (PV) generate electrical power by using solar cells, and dramatically reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). Through 2006 to 2011, it grew the fastest of all renewable technologies with operating capacity increasing an average of 58% annually [l]. However, the cost of manufacturing solar-grade silicon (SoG-Si) for high-efficiency solar energy production represents a major barrier to achieving the industrial goal for solar power of $1/Wp (watt at peak exposure) which would enable widespread grid parity. The current contract price of silicon to PV manufacturers is $50-$60/kg, with the spot market in 2007-2008 showing prices as high as $300/kg [2]. This makes the development of low cost and environmentally friendly manufacturing of high purity silicon very important."

Liquid ? liquid reactions such as solvent extraction in hydrometallurgy and BTX extraction in petrochemical industry has long suffered from the long retention time mainly due to the limited interfacial area caused by the immiscibility between water and oil phase, requiring typically very large perfect mixer type reactors and tall adsorption towers. A novel spray reactor for immiscible liquids; that is the KISEI Nozzle Reactor (KNR) was introduced, enabling the drastic increase in the interfacial area between the reacting immiscible liquids. Various spray mechanisms were applied in materials processing, e.g. spray drying, powder metallurgy, and aerosol industry, but not in hydrometallurgy. The KISEI Nozzle Reactor(KNR) was fully developed and used in production of biodiesel from the immiscible triglycerides and methanol. An experience with a full production plant facility is briefly discussed in the current paper. With the fog-like methanol spray in oil medium, the trans esterification reaction was almost instantaneous, and transformed the traditional batch trans esterification process into a continuous production process. And above all, with no moving parts in the KISEI Nozzle Reactor (KNR), the process requires minimal operation and maintenance costs. "The Midwest is presently the focus for Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) abatement in the United States (U.S.). Most of the EPA mandated utility and municipal long term CSO abatement programs in large metro areas in the Midwest such as Cleveland, Indianapolis, Columbus, Chicago, St Louis, Akron, Fort Wayne, Louisville, Kansas City, Omaha and Pittsburg use or will use deep tunnels for storage and conveyance of CSOs. This paper will compare design methods specified and implemented for tunnel construction in Midwestern geology such as soft ground and mixed face EPBM tunnels, hard rock TBM tunnels, drill & blast tunnels, road header tunnels along with tunnel lining systems. It will also review the performance of successful CSO systems that include design life cycle, vortex and drop shaft configurations, pump stations, storage and conveyance strategies and long term operation and maintenance criteria. HISTORY and BACKGROUND Prior to development of mandated wastewater treatment plants, collecting both wastewater and storm water runoff in a single-pipe system was an efficient and economical solution. The early combined sewer systems were typically designed and sized to carry several times the average dry weather wastewater flows and not designed to handle a mixed volume of waste water and storm water during a wet weather event. Beginning in the early 1970s, federal legislation (Clean Water Act of 1972, Clean Water Act of 1977 and the Water Quality Act of 1982) changed how municipalities and industries in the U.S. were required to treat and discharge wastewater into the nation’s surface waters. They were mandated to treat wastewater at federal regulatory standards for discharge into surface waters that is safe for humans, wildlife and aquatic life. The wastewater treatment facilities that evolved were initially designed and sized to treat only the peak volume of raw wastewater flowing during dry weather. Combined sewer system control sections or relief structures were installed upstream of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and were designed to protect WWTPs from potential damage that would be caused if peak volumes of raw wastewater mixed with storm water runoff reached and overwhelmed the WWTPs."

"The Several approaches were tried for developing an electrochemical route for producing high purity silicon from molten salts. K2SiF6 and metallurgical grade silicon were used as the source of silicon. Molten LiF-KF and pure KF with additions of K2SiF6 were used as electrolytes at temperatures from 550 - 900 oC. Silicon was cathodically deposited and anodically dissolved in the fluoride electrolytes. High electrorefining efficiency was obtained for many elements after electrolysis experiments at constant potential or constant current. The main challenge was to reduce the contents of boron and phosphorus. Another difficulty was to remove inclusions of solidified electrolyte. The lowest energy consumption was estimated to be ~ 3 kWh/kg Si, while the best current efficiency for Si deposition was found to be ~ 95 %.IntroductionSilicon is the most important material for photovoltaic power generation devices because of high feasible efficiency, low ecological impact and slow degradation. Development of a new and less expensive route for producing silicon of the desired quality is necessary in order to make solar cells competitive. Electrochemical routes may be an alternative possibility, and many laboratory studies have been reported over the past few decades. Most of the studies have been performed in molten salts, chloride or fluoride, at moderate temperatures so that solid silicon was deposited at the cathode. The production of high purity silicon has shown an annual increase of about 25 %, due to the increasing demand of solar grade silicon (SoG-Si). For future increased use of solar energy it is important to develop alternative, more energy efficient and cheaper processes for SoG-Si production compared to the Siemens process.Common silicon sources have been SiO2 and K2SiF6 for electrowinning and MG-Si in the case of electrorefining. A serious challenge is to find an oxygen evolving anode for electrolytes containing dissolved oxides. Especially at moderate to high temperatures and in molten fluoride electrolytes this is a difficult task.Many experimental results have been reported in molten chloride electrolytes. Nohira et al. [1-3] and Chen et al. [4] cathodically deposited silicon by electrodeoxidation of solid SiO2 in molten CaCl2 by potentiostatic electrolysis. An alternatice approach is to use electrorefining of low-cost metallurgical grade silicon (MGSi) to produce SOG-Si. In previous studies [5], an MG-Si anode was used, and silicon was successfully electrodeposited on a molybdenum wire in a CaCl2 based melt. It was found that the anode was strongly passivated due to the precipitation of silicon. Also, some deposits detached from the molybdenum wire because of the poor adherence to the cathode.Considering the Cu-Si alloy which has a good segregation effect for some impurities, and should not passivate, could be a good candidate anode for electrorefining. Laboratory test work, pilot plant testing and plant experience with wet, fine mesh screens is discussed. High frequency, low amplitude, fine mesh, wet screens were installed on the 6th cleaner concentrate stream. These screens produce a 60% oversize recovery split of the molybdenite concentrate that is of leached equivalent quality. The undersize stream is leached with 'hot ferric chloride to remove Pb and Cu contaminates before roasting or shipment to sulfide customers. This plant modification is a good example of using existing technology in an unconventional flow sheet to yield significant cost savings.

The Walnut Creek Mine was developed in 1989 to supply lignite to the Texas-New Mexico Power TNP-ONE power plant. Being new, we had the opportunity to start from scratch and rethink many of the traditional methods of managing a mine operation. We had the opportunity to create a team environment, encouraging people to get involved and make decisions. The founding philosophy of the mine, "A Quality Product by Quality People", acknowledged that the key to a productive, quality operation was the people. This paper will explore methods employed by Walnut Creek in selection of team members, building the team and the relative success of these methods.
