The Wabana deposit of Dosco Industries Limited is situated on the east coast of Newfoundland, at Bell Island in Conception Bay. It is a Clinton-type iron-formation of Lower Ordovician age. Five separate beds have been recognized, with others noted locally. Economic production has been obtained from the Lower, Middle and Upper beds, which are second, third and fifth in sequence, al-though at present only the Lower Bed is worked. The potential area of occurrence is about 70 square miles. It i;; bounded by major faults to the north, east and west and truncated by erosion at the south, where rocks of the de-posit crop out on the north side of the island. The iron is contained in oolitic hematite and chamosite, with minor siderite. As the deposit is submarine, conventional exploration methods are not applicable and much interpretation and projection from mined areas is necessary to guide exploration and development. With the interpretation of information from existing mined ores, it is possible, using a minimum of diamond drilling in advance of working faces, to maintain adequate ore reserves.

Following a decline in direct and indirect employment in the minerals industry between 2000 and 2003, the situation reversed in 2004 and employment rose by 12 per cent. Furthermore, there are forecasts of continuing employment growth in the minerals industry in the immediate future. For those of us charged with promoting the virtues of a career in the minerals industry this is encouraging news, as it provides us with the evidence to promote the increasing employment opportunities of a healthy and vibrant industry. However, for many others û particularly the employers in this industry û the news is not so rosy. The jobs are there, and in increasing numbers, but the workers arenÆt! Employers right across the industry are finding it increasingly difficult to fill vacancies with suitably qualified and skilled employees and the competition is becoming fiercer. In the minerals and energy sector, questions are being asked and solutions sought on the industryÆs ability to attract and retain a skilled workforce. From many quarters û industry, government and the education sector, calls for urgent action are becoming louder. The reasons for this are well known û the nature of the work, the remote location, perceptions of the industry, an aging workforce, the gender imbalance, the shrinking demographic of school leavers. It is the latter I wish to focus on û the Generation Y demographic û those who have recently left school, those who are in higher education or have recently entered the workforce, or those who are still at secondary school. These young people are the next cohort of potential employees for the industry. But our need for them appears to be greater that their perceived need for us! How do we engage them so they are informed about the industry? How do we inform and advise them so they are prepared to consider further education and training in disciplines and skill areas relating to our industry? How do we guide and motivate them to give it their best shot and work in it û at least for part of their working life? These are fundamental questions that many within the industry have been grappling with for quite some time. Let me share with you some of the strategies that the Minerals Council is implementing to address this issue.

"Scarcity of freshwater in mining operations in arid zones in different parts of the world has led to the mining companies to think about using seawater as an alternative source in mineral processing operations. Examples of this situation are Minera Centinela (AMSA) and Minera Sierra Gorda (KGHM), both plants located in northern Chile. Previous studies showed that molybdenite flotation is depressed at high pH values in seawater as a result of the action of hydroxy-complexes of magnesium and calcium that attach to the faces of the molybdenite particles, reducing its hydrophobicity and as a result flotation recovery. In this work, a study of the interactions between molybdenite and kaolinite is presented. The effect of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) dispersant on the recovery of molybdenite in the presence of kaolinite is studied in different aqueous media and it is correlated with induction time data. The results allow to conclude that kaolinite has a stronger depressing effect on molybdenite in seawater compared to its effect in freshwater. Magnesium and calcium are the cations that have the strongest effect in enhancing the interactions between molybdenite and kaolinite. SHMP reduces the negative effect of kaolinite on the floatability of molybdenite both in seawater and freshwater. The induction time data correlate well with the micro-flotation results.INTRODUCTION The need for water in mining processes in arid and semi-arid zones has led to the search for new alternatives for this resource, among which seawater has gained an important space. In Chile, most of the mining operations are located in the northern part of the country, an area that has limited availability of freshwater for the processing of copper and molybdenum sulfides (Castro and Laskowski, 2011, Castro et al., 2012 a). Seawater is an aqueous solution with high concentrations of ions such as Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, So42-, Cl-, and other less concentrated species which generate important effects in the flotation process as they modify the properties of the solid/liquid, and liquid/gas interfaces, and also increase the consumption of some important reagents used to depress pyrite such as lime. It has also been proposed that flotation of copper sulfides is negatively affected in seawater because of the reduction of oxygen solubility compared to freshwater (Millero et al., 2002; Duan and Sun, 2003). In contrast, it has been shown that the presence of ions in solution in the process of flotation of natural hydrophobic resources improve recovery as result of the compression of the electric double layer (Laskowski, 1974; Klassen and Mokrousov, 1963, Laskowski and Castro, 2008."

"Since 2010, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has performed eight full-scale compressive load tests on large-diameter pipe piles at four different project locations across the state. All of the piles were 42-in diameter, open-ended pipes driven to practical refusal on sedimentary bedrock with D125-32 diesel hammers from three separate manufacturers. The rapid load test method in general accordance with ASTM D7383-10 (Statnamic method) was used along with high-strain dynamic testing and subsequent signal matching. Results of these tests indicate that the axial nominal resistance of these piles in compression is not controlled by geotechnical considerations when driven with an appropriately sized hammer and installation criterion. Rather, the predominantly elastic load-deflection behavior of the piles under compressive load suggests the axial nominal compressive resistance is controlled by the structural capacity of the pile. In all instances, the rapid load tests indicated a nominal resistance exceeding that produced by high-strain dynamic tests due to insufficient hammer energy to fully mobilize resistance. In all cases, the hammers used were able to easily install the piles through the soil overburden. Mobilizing a larger hammer simply to demonstrate high-strain dynamic resistance is not economical or practical. This paper presents the subsurface conditions at each location, the ensuing test results, and the ramifications for future projects in Minnesota utilizing large-diameter open-ended pipe piles.INTRODUCTIONThe Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has recently performed eight full-scale compressive load tests on large-diameter pipe piles at four different project locations across the state. The four project locations described in this paper where pile load testing was performed are shown in Figure 1 and exist in the southeastern portion of Minnesota. The projects are all major bridges crossing the Mississippi River in three instances and the St. Croix River just above the Mississippi River in the other instance. The first project is the TH 61 Mississippi River crossing in Hasting, MN where two load tests were conducted. The second is the TH 36 St. Croix River crossing in Stillwater, MN where two load tests were performed. The third project is the I-90 Mississippi River crossing in Dresbach, MN where three load tests were conducted. The final project is the TH 43 Mississippi River crossing in Winona, MN where one load test was performed."

on' January 6, ,1992, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rule Making (ANPRM) for diesel particulate (DP). The ANPRM identified five areas where the Agency was seeking additional information to assist in the rule making process. These areas were exposure 'limits, risk assessment, consideration of other information, sampling and monitoring methods, and feasibility. The period for submitting information relative to the ANPRM closed July 10, 1992. Prior to issuance of the ANPRM, the agency was involved in conducting studies to evaluate sampling and control technologies and to gather information with respect to occupational exposures to diesel particulate in underground mining operations employing diesel-powered equipment. Since issuance of the notice, additional studies have been conducted to provide supplementary information in these specific areas. Results of these additional studies indicate that average DP levels in coal mines not using aftertreatment range from 0.9 to 2.1 mg/m3. Aftertreatment devices can reduce these levels by approximately 50 to 90 percent. Studies conducted in metal and nonmetal mines showed average DP levels ranging from 0.3 to 1.6 mg/m3.

TULSA, the host of the Petroleum Division this year, is the oil metropolis of the Mid- Continent and gateway of the Southwest. It has risen in less than three decades from a dusty cattle town of less than 1000 population to its present-day status of a modern, wide-awake and prosperous city of close to 150,000, with an assessed realty valuation of approximately $100,000,000. Oil was discovered near Tulsa in 1901, and with it came th.2 development of the Mid-Continent field, one of the richest in the world. Tulsa from the start has been the center of operations, and its location on foul- and aggressive application of the airplane to oil-field requirements tends to fix this status as production is developed farther and farther afield. That Tulsa is far more than an ephemeral oil town is punched into the newcomer's- especially the Easterner's-mind, as he is whisked by taxi from the railroad station to the Hotel Mayo. The cicadalike pounding of the riveters on the steel skeletons of many skyscrapers, mounting upward to fill the gaps in an already well-developed skyline, dispels the feeling of a new atmosphere and puts him back on Forty-second Street, Michigan Boulevard or whatever his own particular "Main Street" may be along which an American city is being remade. "This paper details the process followed to raise drill and equip a 6.1 metre diameter vertical service shaft at Glencore’s Mindola Deeps project in Kitwe, Copperbelt Province, Zambia. The project scope comprises a shaft collar, bulk air intake, a pre-sink to -90 metres and raise drilling the shaft from surface to a final depth of 1,892 metres underground, in four separate lifts of approximately 475 metres each. Equipping of the shaft steelwork, headframe erection and commissioning the shaft for hoisting. In addition, the scope included the development of a decline down from 5430’ level underground to the new shaft position on 6205’ level. This paper will provide some insight into the successes and challenges encountered during execution of the shaft works to date and provide some learnings for future projects of a similar nature. INTRODUCTION The Mindola Mine is situated to the west of the city of Kitwe in the Copperbelt Province of the Republic of Zambia (Figure 1). The mine is owned and operated by Mopani Copper Mines Plc (MCM), whose shareholders are Glencore AG (73.1%), First Quantum (17.9%) and ZCCM Holdings Plc (10%).Productivity at the Mindola mine has been adversely affected because of significant ventilation and ore re-handling challenges, which are caused by the dilapidated infrastructure, and design of the existing vertical and sub vertical shaft system. In the circumstances, it was apparent that it was necessary to sink a new vertical shaft that would increase the volume of fresh air down the mine, improving the underground working environment and the current hoisting restrictions, resulting in an increase in productivity and efficiency. Because there were two existing levels ideally situated and perpendicular to one another and because a third level was in close proximity to that perpendicular and because the mine required a ramp down to shaft bottom in any event, consideration was given to raise drilling the shaft as opposed to using conventional blind sinking methodologies."

The preparation of coal for the commercial market is a study both varied and wide, and can be viewed from many angles and in different ways. This short paper can but touch upon the subject and is intended to discuss briefly preparation plants which in some cases would seem to be quite inadequate. The conditions confronting most operators are similar, inasmuch as the existing plants were not built specifically to prepare a product for the market of today, but rather of yesterday. The tremendous strides made in the field of combustion in recent years require that the product be of the highest grade procurable, and in a glutted and somewhat restricted market the buyer may be more pernickety than otherwise. These would appear to be the conditions of today. Where a mine is operated individually, better all-round results seem more readily procurable than in a consolidated effort where so many different conditions are sure to arise demanding cognizance, and in many cases requiring to be incorporated in the scheme of things. In the case of a number of mines being administered to form a central source, that source not having had anything to do with the bringing into being of the institutions over which it presides, we find some of the mines well equipped with facilities to properly screen and load the coal, while in others the facilities are not so good, but are doing their share towards delivering a product that will pass muster and in such quantities that they can be counted on.

Nearly three decades of intense research, corresponding with a period of unparalleled discovery and the advent of scientific advances and hypotheses of ore formation, has resulted in a great body process-focused research concerning how ore deposits form. The development of process models and their application has proceeded more or less in step. Discoveries have been made in mineralized regions such as provinces and districts but generally without a comparably developed understanding of why provinces and ore bodies exist and, except in general terms, where ore deposits are within districts and regions. The process of discovery is still referred to as search and exploration budgets are heavily weighted toward exploration drilling.

"Access to information is a key component for making improvements to any process. This is particularly true for all aspects of the iron mining and steelmaking process. The ability to make rapid control decisions can significantly influence process outcomes, including ensuring product specification, mining quality, transportation limits, upgrade factors, waste bypass and direct shipping, among many others. While traditional laboratory methods provide feedback for such processes, having access to analysis results in real-time can lead to positive reactive and predictive control decisions to be made rapidly, leading to significant improvements throughout the process. Scantech has been designing, manufacturing and supplying technological products to the minerals industry since 2002 to enable the availability of such real-time information to a mine or plant, with the benefits being enjoyed by a wide range of operators. This paper provides a summary of the available technologies used in the iron ore and steel industries, as well as providing case studies of their use in African and Australian iron ore and European steel, as well as a description of the potential benefits of a range of analysis equipment.INTRODUCTION Access to information is critical for any process, and is a fundamental component for making process control decisions. In order to yield effective processing outcomes, it is important for that information to be readily available, preferably as quickly as possible, and to be as accurate as possible. While speed and accuracy are often traded off against each other, there are numerous technologies available in a processing environment that allow for both rapid flow of information and a high level of accuracy. The use of on-belt analysis equipment has a long trusted history of use in a number of mining and processing environments and industries, providing information such as elemental composition and grade of conveyed materials, moisture content, waste proportion and energy information. Australian company Scantech has been a provider of such equipment since 1981, and has become an industry leader in both the supply and development of on-belt analysers across a range of industries."

GOLD was discovered previous to the year 1900 on the east shore of Emerald lake, Afton township, Timagami Forest Reserve. It was found in a small cavern in banded iron formation, close to the water's edge. This occurrence of gold was mentioned in several reports that referred briefly to this area, and prospectors evinced considerable interest in the region. It was not, however, until the Golden Rose Mining Company, which was incorporated in 1909, started operations that much work was done on the property. In 1915-16, this Company, under the direction of E. J. Townsend, the President, did a considerable amount of work. A small mill was built and ore was extracted from pits, trenches, and a one~ hundred-foot shaft. In 1927, Afton Mines, Limited, was incorporated to take over the property, and about thirty men were employed for a time. During 1934, the New Golden Rose Mining Company was organized to handle the property, and the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, undertook to develop the mine. In March of the following year, this Company began deepening the shaft from 100 feet to 500 feet. A considerable amount of drilling had previously been done on the hill of iron formation in which the mine is located. Further drilling was done from the surface, and altogether about twelve holes have been put down to test the formations. Over 2,000 feet of drilling has also been done from the underground workings. The mine is now known officially as the New Golden Rose mine, although to many it is better known as the Afton. To reach the property during the summer months, there is a boat trip of about thirty miles from Timagami, a wagon-road portage of one mile to Obabika lake, a boat trip of ten miles on this lake, and finally a wagon-road portage of one and one-quarter miles to Emerald lake. The mine lies about three-quarters of a mile down the east shore of the lake. A 75 h.p. Diesel engine and compressor were taken in over this' route last summer, and it is evident that the transportation problem is quite a serious one. Airplanes have been much in use, and a winter road runs from the mine to Chudleigh, on the .Canadian National railway near Sudbury.

Artificial vision systems are increasingly used to assist humans to perform different tasks in different areas. These systems are able to recognize patterns in complex images, which can provide multiple data. Currently, vision systems are used in both; monitoring traffic - which uses radars for vehicular plate recognition- as in metallurgical and food industries for strict quality inspections. Their use in mining occurs in measuring the speed of froth over the lip of a cell, in determining the shape and size of pellets, in obtaining from the tendency of mineral content and as a replacement for laboratory analysis of particle size. With this advanced tool, it is possible to achieve significant improvements in quality, productivity, and especially in reducing costs in pelletizing plant of iron ore. The objective of this paper is to contemplate the current situation of image analysis in the pelleting plants and glimpse at the potential applications that are being developed. This paper also presents the conception and implementation of an automatic control system of the pellets size distribution applied on a pelletizing plant of iron ore. The article demonstrates the strategy used for measuring the size distribution of the iron ore pellets, based on image analysis and the strategy implemented on advanced process control, which shows substantial gain on plant performance.

"One of the most important process variables in gas atomization is the gas to metal (G/M) mass ratio as it has a direct effect on the mean particle size of the atomized powder. If this ratio can be controlled during the atomization process, the powder produced would be more uniform and the d50 more predictable. Thus, atomization using a tundish or gravity feed from a crucible would be more stable. In gas atomization, the gas flow rate can be easily monitored; while it is very difficult to determine the molten metal flow rate. This research paper presents a new method of recording the molten metal height with time using a conducting metal height detector. The metal height recorded in real time during atomization was used to characterize using a model the friction losses in the metal delivery system. It is found that the integrity of the metal delivery tube and the cleanliness of the melt play a key role in the maintaining a stable metal feed.IntroductionIn the gas atomization process, molten metal is normally fed to the system either continuously using a tundish or in most cases a certain amount of metal is melted in a crucible and flows into the atomizing chamber under gravity. In the first case, the metal flow rate is believed to be constant during the atomization process despite the presence of slag or dross on the molten metal surface. In the second case, the amount of molten metal is depleted with time and the rate at which the metal flow decreases with time varies from test to test in a seemingly unpredictable fashion.' Furthermore, most atomization systems are confined units and the metal level in the crucible cannot be detected by a visualization method. In industry as well as in laboratories, the metal flow rate is normally calculated on either the mass of input material or the mass of total production divided by the duration of the test. This figure is not accurate enough and obviously cannot be used as a control parameter for the gas to metal ratio as it is only determined after the completion of an atomization run. The need exists for a metal flow rate measurement and control methodology; thereby the d50 of the powder produced may be estimated and controlled in real time. Clearly, the smaller the variation of the G/M ratio during the atomization process the more uniform the powder produced and hence the size of the particles can be predicted."

The Carajßs iron ore deposits contain approximately 17.5 billion tons of ore with >64 per cent Fe and occur in the eastern part of the Amazonas Craton. They are hosted by jaspilitic banded iron-formation (BIF) of the Carajßs Formation which, together with metavolcanic rocks, comprise the ~2.75Ga Grpo Parß Group of the Itacai·nas Supergroup in the ~1000 km long, E-W trending Carajßs Synclinorium. The Carajas Formation comprises discontinuous layers and lenses of partly dolomitised BIF (17 - 43 per cent Fe and 35 - 61 per cent SiO2) and lenses of high-grade iron ore, cut by mafic sills and dykes. The high-grade iron ores occur as large tabular bodies of friable (soft) hematite with smaller lenses of hard (compact) hematite. The hard hematite ores typically occur at the contact with the underlying volcanic rocks and are surrounded by an aureole of hydrothermal carbonate alteration. BIF that has been overprinted by dolomite and magnetite crystallisation has recently been discovered at depth in the N4E Mine. With increasing amounts of carbonate, the original lamination (microbanding) and other fine primary structures in the BIF have been progressively obliterated resulting in alternating carbonate and iron oxide mesobands. The friable hematite ore that is characteristic of the Carajßs deposits results from ongoing weathering and leaching of the carbonates from this type of altered BIF. The hard hematite ores probably result from more extensive early oxidation. The association of both carbonate-altered and jaspilitic BIF with the N4 Mine is similar to that observed at the Mount Tom Price deposit in Western Australia, where carbonate-altered BIF occurs below massive hematite ore with a jaspilitic halo developed above the orebody. This indicates that as at Mount Tom Price, hydrothermal carbonate alteration and associated loss of silica from BIF may be an important step in the formation of these giant hematite deposits.

"Modification of Quarry Process.Limestone beds are formed by processes of nature, processes that have been in operation for thousands and perhaps millions of years. Therefore, their com- position and physical properties are long-established and unalterable features over which man has no control. He must take them as he fields them.It is undoubtedly true that the character of lime depends largely on the nature of the parent limestone. A high-calcium lime cannot be manufactured from a dolomite, nor can a pure lime result from the calcination of an impure raw material. However, in the process of turning limestone into lime man is not entirely helpless in his control of quality. Even though a deposit is variable in character a single lime product of uniform quality may be produced by judicious quarrying. A single grade of product may not always be desired, the producer may wish to supply the needs of a variety of users each demanding U different grade or quality of lime such a series of graded products may be produced in part at least by modifying the quarry method. Thus, by changes in quarry practice a single product or a variety of products may be made. The latter problem will be considered at a later time, and the present paper devoted to the first named question' that of producing a single grade of lime from a deposit of variable rock,It is realized of course that uniformity in the product is influenced greatly by manufacturing processes such as calcining' hydrating' grinding or storage, but the present discussion is confined to the influence of raw materials only. In considering the various devices that may be employed it is realized that much remains to be learned, and it is hoped that many operators will contribute to the discussion as they have already done in connection with previous papers of this series."

"There are many critical application issues that affect all AC drives, but there are several that are absolutely mandatory for pulse width modulated (PWM) AC drives. If these rules are not followed, the drive system will have insulation, bearing EMI or noise problems. Pulse Width Output VoltageFigure 1 shows the output current of a typical pulse width modulated (PWM) drive. This is, of course, not a clean sine wave thus will have a lot of very significant harmonics. In fact, the harmonic spectrum is directly related to multiples of the carrier switching frequency plus side bands related to the basic output frequency. A typical spectrum for a PWM source bridge switching at 5 kHz is shown in Figure 2. Notice that the spectrum has multiples of the 5 kHz switching frequency and the number of side bands gets larger as the harmonic number increases.IGBT Switching TransientsWhenever we have PWM inverter switching, voltage transients are formed that propagate (usually at about half the speed of light) down the power cables to the motor just like in a radio frequency transmission line. If we do not terminate these transmission lines (motor cables) properly, the voltage pulses will be reflected when they reach the motor end and will be transiently increased up to twice their original amplitude.This transient voltage rise, shown in Figure 3, is important for three reasons:1. Insulation Voltage Stress — Higher voltage stress in the motor connecting cables and motor insulation will lead to a shorter insulation lifetime. If any of the voltage transient peaks exceed the insulation corona discharge level (partial discharge level), the insulation will gradually degrade with each voltage pulse. When it has been sufficiently degraded, it will then fail.Most new “inverter rated” motors have triple layer insulation which has a 1600 to 2000 volt partial discharge level. This will make them suitable to withstand the double voltage peak transient from a 600 volt inverter. It is wise to make sure of this fact, since a “standard” induction motor will only withstand about 1200 volts. Use of a standard motor in this application would shorten its life drastically. The trend to larger grinding mills, requiring total drive power in the range of 10,000 KW(13,400 HP) or so provides the incentive for developing new power transmitting techniques, since conventional girth gears are limited to about 3700 to 4500 KW per mesh (5000-6000 HP). For the immediate future, the synchronous motor, with its beneficial power factor, and the squirrel cage induction motor, with its high reliability record and low maintenance, still promise to be the best choice for prime mover(s). Due to the abovementioned single mesh power limitation of the gear train, however, two or more motors must be combined to attain the required drive power. This paper describes a scheme for coupling these motors to the mill using a straightforward, essentially mechanical means that is based on proven components and controls.

Industrial mineral production is basic to life in these United States. Production techniques of these minerals are part and parcel of the training that mining engineering educators must, and do, impart to their students. This paper deals with the basic mining engineering program required by all accredited engineering schools and the specific way the Pennsylvania Scare University presents and builds upon them. The manner in which these concepts provide the student with the necessary tools to function as a mining engineer in me realm of industrial minerals extraction is discussed.
